Chairman’s Chat We won the CERPS Interclub 2018. CERPS congress did not happen last year, for reasons I will not go into here. For those new to the club, CERPS stands for “Combined East Rand Photographic Societies” and is made up of Benoni, Boksburg, Edenvale, Kempton park, Springs and Impala Platinum. This congress happens on a yearly basis and is hosted by a different CERPS club each year. We, Edenvale hosted it in 2016, and it was a great success. This year, it was hosted by F-Stop (Kempton Park). The congress is made up of inspirational talks and usually some form of practical workshop as well as an interclub competition. Images for this competition are selected by the clubs from images submitted to the club by members over the preceding year. These are then judged by external judges and the club with the highest overall score wins the CERPS trophy. There are also awards for best in category as well the best junior and senior author (highest score for entered images). CERPS 2018 took place on 27th October. Turnout was very good, especially from Edenvale with 9 members attending. The speakers were amazing, sharing knowledge and skills that benefitted all. Sarel from Photowise gave us a new look at Automotive photography along with a practical demonstration. Wow, what can be achieved with simple equipment in midday conditions is just astounding. The workshop on food photography, guided by Maryna from Photowise gave a new and fresh look at this genre. Edenvale has been a regular winner in the past, but the interclub competitions in 2015 and 2016 were both won by Boksburg, with Edenvale coming second. We were thus really excited when Edenvale was announced as the CERPS interclub winner for 2018. Edenvale members, you have done us all proud. This is an awesome result. Thanks to Rickus and F-Stop for a well-run, truly enjoyable congress. You all went out of your way to make this a memorable event. The effort put into the congress could be seen without doubt. I am already looking forward to CERPS 2019, hosted by Benoni. Keep October 2019 open. CERPS is coming. Please see this newsletter for the full list of results

Exhibitions News 1-30 November at FotoZA In an interview, the South African Photographer Jodi Bieber said that it was “only by great fortune that I found photography and with it a vehicle to explore my country” and to understand it in the years of transition from one era to another. Between Darkness and Light: Selected Works 1994 - 2010 is the first monograph consisting of numerous bodies of work by Jodi Bieber.

Cover Story ...by The green behind the model, would you believe is a tennis court wall, which made for an amazing textured background and this was shot in the afternoon using only natural light. The mix of colours in the bouquet also added to the overall feel and I did some minimal Photoshop enhancing to bring the best out of the image. A make up artist was employed to professionally apply the make up for the look that was required
It was published by Skira in Italy in 2017. To accompany the book the photographic series that will be exhibited included lesser-known works from the series “Women Who Murdered their Husbands.”

1. Select Canvas [Frame] Size under the heading “ Image” in Photoshop if you wish to add the border to the image and make your adjustments. If you do not wish to add a border go to step 2 2. Select image size under the heading “Image” in Photoshop – Tick the following boxes : Scale Styles, Constrain Proportions and Resample image. 3. I consider myself a newbie as a photographer. When I look back on my life, I realise that I always had a camera in my hand, a point and shoot just happy taking snapshots, never regarding myself as a photographer. My first DSLR was a birthday gift in August 2012, a Canon 600D, prompted (unknowingly) by a passing comment that I would like to know more about f-stops, filters and lenses. That has led me to where I am today. I attended a few basic courses at CODP, learning the basics regarding exposure and composition and joined Edenvale Photo Club in January 2013. My first club submission did not go well. I stood in awe of the 5 star images and my submissions that I really liked received two bronzes and a silver. When I look back on those images now, I can understand why. Maybe this hard first lesson was what I needed. I have since replaced the 600D with a 6D and more recently acquired a 7D Mk II for wildlife and action shoots. These two bodies are always in my bag, along with a 100-400 Mk II and my trusty 24-105 which never fails to deliver. I do not have a preferred genre. I have tried just about everything; sport, wildlife, birding, landscape, table top, studio, abstract, macro, street photography and I am now delving into some altered reality. Maybe I need to refine my genre, but then again, maybe I don’t. If asked, I would say the best learning curve is the club scene, along with the time I have spent shooting with Jorge, always willing to share and guide. The last 5 years have been a blur. A never-ending rollercoaster ride from star rating to star rating, promotions always coming with trepidation and a fear of not coping. Being nominated as club chairman during the AGM in 2016 added to this rollercoaster ride. Everyone assured me that this is a team effort and I must thank everyone for standing by me. Your support has been welcome and needed.
John encouraged(insisted) I judge, not only at clubs but also for salons, local and international. While club judging still makes me feel a bit uncomfortable, I am hoping experience will change this. I still feel underqualified to judge work by people with years more experience than I have. John, in hindsight, I must thank you, as this has improved and changed the way I see images. One thing eludes me though; a medal at a local salon. Perhaps I am showing my competitive side. “Buck whisperers” won a gold medal at an international salon and “Man in the window” a bronze. I will be putting more work into the 2018/2019 year, hoping to improve this. Time will tell.
