THE COACH

The head coach offers a little insight into club operations...

M

arch saw us play only 1 game, which we won against Glasgow Girls 5-1. Five different goal scorers was also pleasing to see and I was impressed with the way we defended as a team. The lack of games has allowed some players with minor injuries the chance to recover. The squad have been fantastic so far in 2018. Our squad unity continues to develop and it makes you look forward to delivering sessions as a coach. We have also been adding elements of leadership into sessions to help various players and especially the younger players become more confident in different situations. As a University and Club coach you need to still remember players develop at different rates but we want to develop leaders of the future to keep us moving forward. You don't really have a pre-season as such in women's football as the season is played nearly 12 months of the year with a few breaks added in, usually based around the international calendar. We manage the work loads depending on university / club fixtures and we work on recovery with the players when necessary to @euhvfootball

keep them fresh for times they will most need energy. Due to the lack of club games this month I’ve decided to give you an insight into how we plan our sessions. We work off a document called the Green Print – this is a 50 page document put together about standards at the club and covers various areas from club history to various formations players should be comfortable playing through our teaching. We have top 10 principles of play which we base our style of play on. We also structure sessions off a curriculum which is used as a guide to help coaches throughout the club. This curriculum covers a wide range of sessions and topics and when delivering a session we put that alongside a Top 12 practice. These practices are basic practices that we use every session which are simple but reflect our style of play and deliberately set up to achieve repetition. This way of working isn’t new but the key is how it’s delivered. If you ever watch our sessions we try and make it as game related as possible and with limited cones and fancy equipment. We have plenty of free play also which

allows players to express themselves. Too often coaches set up complex passing drills which have no relevance to the game and waste time explaining what rotations are. I’ve been there and you can lose players very quickly. Football is a simple game, you need a wide range of intelligence to work out various match scenarios in different situations which can be added to sessions to replicate this. For me this is crucial if players are ever going to reach the top. This may not work for every coach or club but having a long term plan has really seen benefits for us. We look ahead to a busy few weeks. We have reached the Scottish Cup Final for the 2nd time in 3 years with the University team and while underdogs we aim to win it again like we did 2 years ago. The final is Wednesday 4th April at Lesser Hampden. SWPL action returns on 15th April as we travel to Aberdeen. We also have players and staff involved with Scottish Universities Squad as we play Wales and English Universities in April also. Lots to look forward to and as always we thank you for the continued support.

THE CAPTAIN

The captain reflects on injury and looks forward to returning after the break...

I

t has been a very stop-start season for both the team and me personally. We have lost a lot of training sessions and a couple of games to the snow which has made it difficult to keep the momentum going. The coaching staff keep the intensity high at training which helps with consistency but it’s hard to replicate match situations on the training pitch. I’ve struggled this season with a back injury which has kept me out of most games so far this season. I only managed the first half in both our league game with Motherwell and cup tie with Spartans. Although I would have liked to play on in these games, I don’t want to risk making myself worse and losing a lot of the season to injury. I missed the Glasgow Girls game due to injury which is frustrating but the team performed @euhvfootball

brilliantly with five different players getting on the score sheet. It was great to see everyone playing so well in all positions especially defensively where we limited the chances that Glasgow Girls had and forced them to play long. After a long break we are looking forward to getting on the road to play Aberdeen. We know that it will be a tough game and with the results they’ve had against Kilmarnock and St Johnstone they’ll be looking to pick up points. They have a number of players with SWPL1 experience and will

look to use that but we have a very talented squad that are willing to work hard, I’m confident we will be able to match them. I would like to congratulate all players involved with the University team. They had a tough schedule trying to catch up on games and ended up playing 2 games in 3 days. They managed to secure the BUCS league with a win over Aberdeen and set up a cup final against Stirling with a win over St Andrew’s. I wish all the players and staff the best of luck and hope to see the Cup back in Edinburgh.

“EUHV RECORD FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON IN ENTERTAINING HIGH TEMPO ENCOUNTER AGAINST GLASGOW GIRLS”

E

dinburgh University Hutchison Vale picked up their first win of the season with a stunning home victory over Glasgow Girls at Peffermill. In a high tempo encounter it was the visitors who looked the more threatening in the opening exchanges. MacDonald miscontrolled the ball in front of goal just a minute before she found the back of the net with an effort that was ruled offside. Ten minutes in and Smart opened the scoring for EUHV with her first goal of the campaign. With no options available she @euhvfootball

unleashed a 30-yard effort that found the top corner leaving Hopwood, in the Glasgow Girls goal, completely stranded. EUHV doubled their advantage just nine minutes later as Glasgow Girls pressed

forward looking for an equaliser. Sturrock picked up the ball and carried it down the field, eventually finding Emek in the penalty box who fired home under pressure. As the half drew to a close, both goalkeepers

EUHV - APRIL 2018

THE TWO PRESIDENTS EUHV is joined by current EUWAFC President Sarah Thompson and newly elected EUWAFC President for the 2018-19 term, Katie Macdonald, to chat about the role, what it means to them and what it means for the future of the club,

@euhvfootball

“IF YOU WANT TO BE PART OF A GROUP OF ACCEPTING, SPECIAL GIRLS WHO WORK HARD FOR EACH OTHER AND GO OUT OF THEIR WAY TO MAKE EVERYONE FEEL WELCOME THEN JOIN EUWAFC BECAUSE NOT ONLY WILL YOU HAVE THE BEST FOOTBALLING EXPERIENCE, YOU WILL MAKE MEMORIES TO CHERISH FOREVER AND BEST FRIENDS FOR LIFE.”

facebook.com/EUHVfootball

19

EUWAFC SPECIAL FEATURE What made you decide to stand for the role? KM: I have really enjoyed my past year being on the committee and really wanted to get more involved in the club. Being quite an outgoing and very organised person I thought President would be the best role for me to take on. With such big shoes to fill I was hesitant about running at first but Sarah gave me a lot of support and advice in the lead up to the AGM and I am very excited for the year ahead. ST: Football has always been a huge part of my life and what better way to get fully involved in it than be EUWAFC president? I felt as though I could represent the whole of EUWAFC and be a listening ear to all. I wanted to make changes in the club that made players feel more valued; whether they were part of our recreational 5-aside league or the top goal scorer for the 1st team they all deserve to be valued. I wanted to make sure that everyone felt they had their voice heard amongst such an expanding club. I

20

am really passionate in particular about participation and inclusion: I wanted to make sure EUWAFC had a place for everyone and anyone who wanted to play. I wanted to be President to give back to the club that has completely transformed my University experience and played such a big part in having the best 4 years possible. Can you shine some light on the position of Club President? What are the duties and responsibilities involved with taking on the position? ST: Officially being President is related to communication and delegation. A quote from our Sports Union President Eve O'Loan will always stick with me: "If you want a job done well, do it yourself, if you want a life, then delegate it." Being President has mostly been working with a number of different channels, from our Sports Union, to our coaching team and committee, to EUHV management, to our sponsors and officials. It has been a pleasure working with such a committed, hard working group

of people. Unofficially, being President means getting to spend time with - in my opinion the best committee in the world. It has meant getting to know players in the club who were shy and nervous about ever getting involved with football. It has meant working with people that I would never have had the opportunity to meet and learning about how different people work. It has meant being there for people who see football as a release and being able to support anyone in that way has been a huge privilege and a much greater honour. You have both played for the club at different levels throughout your time at University correct? KM: Sarah has played with all 3 teams which I think helped her as President to represent the whole club in meetings with the SU. I played a season with the 2s in my first year before moving to the 1s. I think we are both good examples of players who have really benefited from the player pathway we are trying to establish at EUWAFC, in partnership with EUHV. I’m not EUHV - APRIL 2018

@euhvfootball

facebook.com/EUHVfootball

21

EUWAFC SPECIAL FEATURE sure either of us would be playing 1st team football without the opportunities we have been given at Edinburgh. ST: In my first year I played for the 3rd team when it was a 'development team' which brings back fond memories of training in really horrendous weather - but my first coaches Derek Nelson and Nic Sturrock were there through it all! After Christmas I was elected as Captain and then my 2nd and 3rd years saw me Captain our 2nd team. This is where I hold some of my fondest memories - when the 2s won the

22

league and the cup - I will never forget those celebrations! This year it has been a privilege to be a part of the 1st team squad which is something I never thought achievable in the first year! Do you feel that having experienced being part of the club at different levels gives you a stronger insight into how the experience of EUWAFC is for a wider range of members and helps when it comes to be more inclusive as a club? KM: Yes definitely. Playing for the 2s last season was lots of fun and we trained on the same pitch as the

3s so you really got to know all the girls well. As the 1s often train on a different pitch they can seem like an intimidating bunch but since joining them in September I’ve realised this is not at all the case. Having seen this from both perspectives has shown me something I want to improve within the club: unity between the teams. We want everyone to feel included and have the best university experience possible playing football. Not everyone wants to be at Peffermill 7 days a week but would prefer to train once or twice a week and play matches

EUHV - APRIL 2018

EUWAFC SPECIAL FEATURE with their friends so seeing this on 2 of the 3 teams I think will help me relate to players and improve the overall experience. In terms of playing, what have been your favourite memories on the pitch? KM: Probably the penalty shoot out in the SSS Semi-Final this year against St Andrews. Although the game itself was frustrating, finishing 0-0, and the shoot-out was extremely nerve racking, when we won everyone went crazy. It was one of the best atmospheres I have had in a football match as so many club members came down to support which was amazing. ST: Wow it has to be whilst playing for the 2nd team during my 2nd year. I had been called up to play for them at the end of my first year and was selected for the squad against Stirling 2s in the conference cup final. The team was so pumped for the game and we played brilliant football. Nic and Derek were both so proud. We went on to win the Scottish 2A league as well and getting the double was just @euhvfootball

fantastic - I will never forget the celebrations in the Peartree that night with banners and confetti everywhere! What do you feel is the more important aspect of being Club President? KM: Although I have not yet started the role I would say being approachable to all members of the club as it is your responsibility to represent EUWAFC to the best of your

ability. Listening to people’s concerns and trying to resolve any issues should be the number one priority. Also being very efficient at admin because I know Sarah sends lots of emails! ST: I think getting to know players at a personal level is really important. Anyone can come in and go to meetings, organise fixtures etc but getting to know individuals

facebook.com/EUHVfootball

23

EUWAFC SPECIAL FEATURE this year has been a massive privilege. Club unity and value isn’t easy to implement in such a big club but is something that we as a committee have done our best to prioritise this year. It’s understanding that not everyone wants to go on to be the next Fran Kirby but giving them every opportunity to play football. In her summary this month Sarah hinted that candidates had suggested 'brilliant and creative ideas'. Can you give us a preview of what you hope to bring to the club in your new role? ST: Katie and the rest of the committee blew me away with some brilliant ideas that they are hoping to implement next year: from more accessible training slots, to regular circuit training, injury rehabilitation sessions, player development pathways and loads more! KM: My vice president, Rachel Torrance, and I have some ideas we hope people will really get on board with such as a strength and conditioning program for the 2/3s who currently do not benefit

24

from one and plans regarding structured communication pathways, both within the club and with the SU as a whole, to ensure all players feel like their voices are being heard. Our social secs for the coming year, Megan and Linda, are aiming to increase the club feel throughout all teams while our Publicity and Alumni officers, Molly and Katie Kennedy, have got some very exciting plans to widen our outreach even further. I want to keep widening participation in sport by developing the recreational side of things and through our new position this year community officer Ellie will look to work with local schools to give back to the community. Having spent the last year in the role, what have been the key highlights for you? ST: A number of momentous memories flash by but the most recent win against Saint Andrews in the semifinal of the Scottish Student Sport cup was a big victory. We were definitely the favourites to win but Saint Andrews have always made it hard for us to score against them, but those penalties were

the longest 5 minutes ever! Our 25th year alumni celebration was a massive success this year – with a lot of hard work from our committee. It was amazing to get in touch with some of the EUWAFC founding members who sent in original photographs, medals and certificates as well as hilarious stories of post-match celebrations that don’t sound too dissimilar from ours today! Can you give an insight into some of the challenges you have faced over the last year? ST: The beast from the east! That weather was appalling and completely put off matches and training for a good 2 weeks. Although work can still be done in the background it is hard to prepare for matches when you have no idea when they will be! It is challenging to keep up with such a growing and big club: with our rec programme, 3 football teams, 2 futsal teams and SWPL squad with EUHV there is always something to be done and so keeping on top of everything has been challenging. But, all of the challenges EUHV - APRIL 2018

@euhvfootball

facebook.com/EUHVfootball

25

EUWAFC SPECIAL FEATURE are worth it because it has tested us as we have grown as a club and learnt how to deal with them. As departing Club President, what advice would you offer to Katie for the year ahead? ST: There are 2 things I would say to Katie for the next year ahead: Firstly: “You can do anything you set your mind too, but you can’t do everything.” The 2018/19 committee are

made up of a fantastic, enthusiastic bunch who I have no doubt will work their socks off, but make sure you use them! And secondly, more specifically related to football: Bill Shankly -famous Scottish football player and manager – spoke some advice that I would give to Katie…. “Some people think football is a matter of life or death……..I can assure you, it is much more important than that.”

In September, the University will welcome a new wave of freshers to study at the University of Edinurgh. What message do you have to incoming students potentially looking to join the club? KM: I want all incoming students to know that EUWAFC is open to everyone from complete beginners to national team members. This club is where I have already made so many lasting friendships and great memories and I want everyone to have that same great experience. Please come see us at Sports Fair and we can help you decide what level of football is right for you. ST: EUWAFC has a place for everyone, wherever you are at with your football experience. If you want to be part of a group of accepting, special girls who work hard for each other and go out of their way to make everyone feel welcome then join EUWAFC because not only will you have the best footballing experience, you will make memories to cherish forever and best friends for life.

This time they were matched over 90 minutes by a resilient St Andrews side who defended doggedly over 90 minutes to force a penalty shootout. In a game of few clear-cut opportunities Edinburgh came away with a 6-5 victory during the sudden death phase of the shoot-out. The first real chance of the match arrived after 22 minutes when Boeckh slipped a ball through the St Andrews @euhvfootball

THE BIG INTERVIEW

You are from Dundee? Where in the city did you grow up and where did you go to school? Yeah, I was born and brought up in Dundee. I am from Broughty Ferry which is a small suburb by the sea and I went to Grove Academy, which is the school there. When were you first introduced to playing football and what was the first club you joined? I can't remember when exactly I started but I played a lot in the back garden with my older brother, James, who played in goal too. I joined my first club, Monifieth Ladies FC, at the age of 11 and started

playing for their under 13s side. Have you always been a goalkeeper and what inspired you to play in goal? I have always been a goalkeeper, which is strange because a lot

and my brother played in goal as well so I guess that's what inspired me. You have played for several clubs over the years. Can you fill us in on your footballing career prior to arriving at EUHV?

“A LOT OF FEMALE KEEPERS START AS OUTFIELDERS AND END UP BEING A GOALKEEPER. of female keepers start as outfielders and end up being a goalkeeper. I remember my coach at Monifieth handing me the gloves in one of my first training sessions, so I suspect he didn't think I looked very good outfield! That's how it all started, I wasn't too bad at playing in goal

I have, I played with Monifieth for around 5 years or so through the age groups and then joined Tayside Ladies in my last couple of years at school. When I came to Edinburgh to go to university I started playing for the university club (EUWAFC) EUHV - APRIL 2018

THE BIG INTERVIEW

EUHV - APRIL 2018

THE BIG INTERVIEW and Hibernian Development. After a short spell there I joined the then Hutchison Vale Ladies and then after being back at Hibs Dev for a while, here I am at EUHV. You currently study Law at the University of Edinburgh? Why did you decide to study Law and what inspired you to choose Edinburgh as the place for you to study? Yeah I am in my fourth year at Edinburgh Law School. At school I liked subjects like Modern Studies and there are so many different areas of law so it's not too difficult to find something that you are interested in. I really wanted to move away from Dundee to a bigger city, and I really liked Edinburgh as a place and how the University is such a big part of the city here. I was actually really stuck between Edinburgh and Glasgow but I am sure I made the right choice in the end. In terms of University football can you describe how well you feel that this season has gone? I think this season has gone pretty well. We won the Scottish 1A @euhvfootball

League with a couple of games to spare and have the Scottish Student Sport Cup final to look forward to next week. As for the British Trophy, it was disappointing to lose at home to Nottingham Trent and for me personally to miss the game through injury, as those types of games against different and unknown opposition are the ones that don't come around very often and we all really look forward to competing in. Speaking of the SSS Cup Final how did it feel progressing after coming from behind in such a nail biting penalty shoot-out? It was a great relief more than anything. We were on top for the whole game pressing their defence and just couldn't break through, so to ultimately win and progress to the final was deserved on our part. Penalties are nerve racking and can go either way though so we had to see it out. I thought the girls stepped up brilliantly to secure the victory for us. Moving on to EUHV, you are now established as the first choice goalkeeper.

41

THE BIG INTERVIEW How does it feel making that step up from being first choice at University level and playing for Hibs Dev to now starting in goal at SWPL2 level? It feels pretty natural, I have played at this level before when at Hutchison Vale, so I have encountered many of the teams we compete against in SWPL2 already. University and club football are somewhat different but many of my teammates and opponents in University competition have competed in SWPL2 and SWPL1 football so I guess that has set me up well. As well as improving my game

42

on the pitch, it has grown my confidence that I can compete at a higher level too. This season had a bit of a rocky start didn't it? You were in for the first game

preseason. After the Hearts game I sprained my ankle badly in training and it has been a bit problematic for the last 6 weeks, but it is getting better! It is frustrating being stuck on the sidelines

“I HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE OVER THE YEARS HAVING NOT HAD MANY INJURIES KEEPING ME OUT OF GAMES. against Hearts but then suffered an injury setback. Can you let us know more about your injury and how it felt to be sidelined? Yeah we have had a difficult start to the season, especially after the strong end to last year and a good

watching, especially at the beginning of the season. I have been fortunate over the years having not had many injuries keeping me out of games, so it was weird to sit and watch from the sidelines because of it.

EUHV - APRIL 2018

THE BIG INTERVIEW

What has been the most memorable moment of your career thus far? Probably winning the futsal British Trophy down at St George's Park in May 2016. It was such a great experience, a great venue and a close game where we came from behind to beat our closest rivals. In terms of football, it would probably be winning the Scottish Student Sport Cup in the same year, about a month before the futsal final. That was my first trophy in football after playing for over 9 years so that was satisfying! Do you have any footballing role models or inspirations @euhvfootball

either from the professional game or that you have worked with? I'd be inclined to say Dundee FC as they are my home team and I have seen them a few times. They aren't doing so well at the moment

Where would you like to find yourself in five years time? I am not too sure to be honest, I don’t tend to look too far forward with anything. I would like to be playing at as high a level as possible, but enjoying it and

“I AM NOT ASHAMED TO ADMIT SINCE ABOUT THE AGE OF 7 OR 8 I HAVE BEEN A BIG FAN OF WESTLIFE.” though so it's not enjoyable to follow their results! I like watching any football, whether it be Scottish or English Premier League right across to the National Women's Soccer League in the USA. But yeah I don't really follow any other specific teams.

playing with confidence too. So you expect to still be involved with football in some capacity in the future? Of course, I would like to be playing for as long as possible!

facebook.com/EUHVfootball

45

THE BIG INTERVIEW Any hobbies or interests away from football? How do you spend your time when not in the lecture theatres or on the football pitch? I sometimes do longer distance running, mainly at home in Broughty Ferry where I can run beside the beach in the evenings. In December I ran a 5k every day, including Christmas Day! I find during the university term and the football season I don’t have a lot of spare time for this though. Aside from this I also like baking from time to time and painting my nails... My teammates often comment on how strange it is that a goalkeeper has her nails done all the time! Best players that you have ever played with and against? That’s a tough question, I feel like I have been lucky enough to play with many great players during my time in Edinburgh so far. With the university team and the Scottish Students National squad I played with Kirsty Howat who is a fantastic talent. Another player I rate very highly and who I have played both with and more

46

recently against is Courtney Mcavoy, she is consistent, technical, enjoyable to watch and she served EUWAFC so well during her time here. In terms of music what and who do you enjoy listening to and going to see? I have a really varied music taste, one minute I will be listening to one thing and the next something completely different. I am not ashamed to admit since about the age of 7 or 8 I have been a big fan of Westlife, even if they are no longer together… I don’t often go to concerts or gigs, but I am going to see the Rolling Stones at Murrayfield in June with my parents, which will be awesome. It isn’t often you get to see one

of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time! Tell us something about yourself that we don’t know? At school I used to play water polo and netball as well as football, and I was the goalkeeper in those too – but football was always my main sport. Who is the most famous person you have ever met? I haven’t met anyone super famous to be honest, so it would probably have to be the chef Ainsley Harriott… I met him at the Highland Show a few years back when I was about 15. I walked past John Terry down in central London a couple of years ago, but I didn’t speak to him.

COACHING COURSE

COACHING COURSE E

UHV were fortunate enough to be awarded Focus Pathway funding from the Elite Club Licensing in SWPL 1 and 2 leagues to support he delivery of a female only introductory coaching course. Saturday 24th March Edinburgh University Hutchison Vale hosted a female only coaching course at Peffermill, in partnership with EUWAFC and Hutchison Vale. The course was open to all females within both Hutchison Vale and EUWAFC and it was terrific to see players from recreational level

52

right up to SWPL level in attendance. The day began with a short classroom based session covering the player pathway in Scotland, outlining the differences between the boys and girls

sessions continued after lunch with challenges and fun games to end the day. A terrific day in the sunshine with all those involved getting started on their coaching pathway.

EUHV HOSTS SCOTTISH FA 1.1 EARLY TOUCHES COACHING COURSE team sizes and ball sizes. The participants then headed out onto the pitch to cover a variety of warm ups, drills and activities for young players to develop initial understanding of the game. The practical

We look forward to hopefully seeing some of these role models getting involved in Hutchison Vale youth teams or in local community projects. Thanks to Girls and Women’s Club Development Officer for the South East, Karen McConnell for her help organising the event and to Aidan Forbes for tutoring alongside Karen. Further thanks to the support from EUWAFC President Sarah Thompson and their committee in assisting in sign-ups and coordinating facilities with Peffermill. EUHV - APRIL 2018

"The Early Touches 1.1 was an ideal introduction to football coaching, it was well delivered, easy to follow and most importantly such a fun day. I was pleasantly surprised at how inclusive the course was and was suitable for all levels of confidence and ability. Even although I have been involved in male and female football at a high level most of my life I still finished the day having learnt loads and on reflection it was really good just to revisit the basics of the game. I like the thinking behind the “all female courses” and I’m a firm believer that we need more female coaches in the male and female game but more importantly for me on the day was the large representation from all levels of EUWAFC and EUHV, learning and having a laugh together, a great reflection on the success of the partnership . At the end of the day one of the girls was saying that previously she didn’t think coaching was for her but that participation in this course had made her sure that she would enrol on the 1.2- a nice success story to summarise the day!"

"The 1.1 coaching course was really good fun! I spent the majority of my day playing football, but I engaged with the game in a totally different way. The learning element was interesting and really well put together, I loved the focus on female presence in sport and it made me value my position as an EUWAFC player even more. The knowledge and skills I have gained after completing the 1.1 has motivated me to progress through the children's coaching pathway and hopefully, I will have the opportunity to influence the way younger girls engage with football."

"The 1.1 coaching course was a great experience to have so many female footballers come together and learn more about developing the future generation of young footballers. Having seen first hand the lack of female role models amongst football it was a great initiative to get more women involved in coaching. There was a range of footballing backgrounds but this was not important when we all came together to grow as coaches and find out ways of developing. The coaches were both motivating and encouraging and have inspired me to get involved more in youth football clubs in the future."
