THE HEAD COACH - MIKE ROSS
Mike Ross
THE COACH
T
his past month we have gone from strength to strength both on and off the pitch On the pitch we have been unbeaten in the last 6 games including a Scottish Cup win against an improving Hawick and 2 draws and 3 wins in a row in the SWPL have seen us improve our points tally and close the gap on those above us. The most pleasing of the results was our away win against Aberdeen where previously we lost 4-0. We were determined to perform better this time as I know that 4-0 result didn’t reflect how we usually perform and the standards we aspire to. Due to the nature of the SWPL fixtures this was our 2nd away trip in a row to Aberdeen before we had been given the chance to play them at home. Like the gaps in the fixture list I think this is something that needs looked at to improve the balance and fairness. The players showed real character during the game and were excellent @euhvfootball
after going a goal down against the run of play responding with 3 2nd half goals. It was nice to finish off the first half of the season with a win and a feel food factor within the squad. Last season we finished extremely strong in the 2nd half of the season and this is something we aim to do again. We know it won’t be easy as we know the league remains extremely competitive but with the return of some student players and a few recent new additions I expect performance levels to continue to improve. We will return to training and play some friendlies before we face Kilmarnock and Central Girls away then Hamilton in the Scottish Cup at home all within 7 days. We are then back at Peffermill against Hearts for the 3rd and final time this season which I’m sure will be an exciting game. Off the pitch we were excited to get to train on the fantastic new 3G at Peffermill to
compliment the current 3G and stadium pitch used by players. We are very fortunate to have such excellent training facilities which are consistent and where the players look forward to playing regularly. The players have been given some time off to reflect and enjoy time with friends and family. I’ve said before I feel some teams train for the sake of training and players (especially young players) can easily burn out and often get injured. We strive for quality not quantity and I expect us to come back refreshed and raring to go. I want to say thank you to all those who have come to watch us this season so far both home and away plus a big thanks to Craig Doyle who puts these monthly magazines together in such a professional manner helping to continually develop and promote the women’s game. I also want to thank our sponsors for their continued support to the team and individuals.

THE CAPTAIN - JUDE SHEPHERD
Jude Shepherd
THE CAPTAIN
The captain applauds the efforts from the squad over the last month...
T
his has been a great month for the club, we have performed well and matched the targets we set ourselves. We have also enjoyed being able to train on the new 3G pitch at Peffermill and look forward to competing in a match on it. At the start of this run of fixtures we set the target of 9 points from 9 and progression into the next round of the Scottish Cup. The first team we needed to face was a young Central team. They played some excellent football and they tried to play the right way by keeping the ball and trying to move it around. Fortunately our experience showed and we were able to dominate the game for long periods of the game. 2 goals from Katherine Smart and @euhvfootball
Lucy Brown with no reply were enough to seal the win. The following weekend we welcomed Hawick United in the second round of the SSE Scottish Cup. Although Hawick play at a lower level they are on a good run of form and would enjoy the underdog status. We knew all the pressure would be on us but we would need to still put in a solid performance. Hawick gave a really good performance and fought right to the end but our strength showed and we were comfortable winners in the end. A midweek fixture against St Johnstone was up next and we knew we were going to be in for a physical game. St Johnstone started sluggishly which allowed us to find our rhythm and
dominate the game. We all worked hard and again finished as comfortable winners. As a defender I’ve been really happy in the last few games as we have really tightened up as a defensive unit and are conceding far fewer goals. I unfortunately couldn’t make the Aberdeen game but I’m happy for the squad who travelled were able to come home on a happy bus especially after our first game against them when we really didn’t do ourselves justice. It just shows the strength that we have in this squad and the effort being put in on the training field is paying off. We now go into the break in a much better position and hope we can start the next half of the season as we mean to go on.

ith both teams searching for a win to potentially lift themselves out of the relegation zone this first-time meeting felt like a true clinched relegation six-pointer. EUHV almost got off to the perfect start as Brown connected beautifully with a controlled volley from Sturrock's ball to the back post, only to see her effort cleared off the line with a header. Half way through the opening period EUHV were awarded a penalty as Ross broke into the penalty area and was brought down by the advancing King in the Central @euhvfootball
goal. Sturrock fired the resulting spot kick low and hard to King's right beating the Central keeper but saw her effort rebound off the post without presenting itself for a follow up opportunity. Spurred on by the missed penalty, Central
Girls began to grow into the game towards the end of the half. A nice exchange of play saw the ball worked out wide on the left forcing Boslem out to quickly cover the danger ensuring the sides went in goalless at the break.

UHV welcomed SWFL2 side Hawick United to Peffermill as they kicked off their 2018 SSE Scottish Women's Cup campaign. With three games scheduled in eight days including crucial SWPL2 fixtures against St Johnstone and Aberdeen, head coach Mike Ross made a number of changes to the start eleven with Fish, Durand-Watson and Macfarlane all starting. The opening minutes saw EUHV assert dominance of possession and territory as they pressed to establish an @euhvfootball
early lead. The opener came on 16 minutes as Brown burst into the left side of the box and squared for Fish to net her first goal of the season. Hume, returning to action after missing the last two league matches, doubled the
lead on the half hour by finishing a chance from a through ball. The striker was involved again in the third goal on 40 minutes as she was kicked to the floor in the box resulting in a penalty which was dispatched by Murray

THE MIDFIELD MAGICIAN Midfielder Nichola Sturrock sits down with EUHV to chat about her time with EUWAFC, her career working with The Spartans Community Football Academy and a footballing life that has seen her work to overcome number of difficulties to play at SWPL level.
@euhvfootball

THE BIG INTERVIEW - NICHOLA STURROCK
You are currently working in Edinburgh, can you tell us a bit about where you grew up? Yes I currently work in North Edinburgh at The Spartans Community Football Academy. However, I was born and still live out near Livingston. The village I stay in is relatively small and was where I grew up. I live on the outskirts of the village so lots of fields and forests nearby. As a kid I only ventured into the big city for special occasions like birthday meals out! When I left secondary school I studied an undergraduate degree at the University of Edinburgh and

THE BIG INTERVIEW - NICHOLA STURROCK
22
EUHV - AUGUST 2018
THE BIG INTERVIEW - NICHOLA STURROCK I was 15. As a kid I played mostly in the street using the kerbs, lampposts and jumpers for goals. A couple of the boys who lived in our street had the build up samba goals and if the weather was nice we would take them to the local park and have a massive game, there would be about 20 kids from nearby streets who’d all come up for a game! I played a lot at school at break times etc and played in a few school tournaments. I found an old school photo recently of us all in our kit, 2 of the boys are now playing pro which is pretty cool. My first taste of “structured” football was at a community programme based at Livingston FC. It was a girls only weekly training session and I remember it being good fun although there weren’t any games involved as it wasn’t a club as such. My PE teacher at school was always on at my parents to get me into a team but my mum refused because she “didn’t want me to break my leg playing with the boys”. We didn’t really know there were girls only teams, nevermind @euhvfootball
a league full of them. Then one of my sisters friends who was a few years below me at school told me about the team she played for, Murieston United. It was girls only and just a 5 minute drive from my house. I went along for a few sessions and loved it! Despite being initially hesitant about me joining a club, my mum is my biggest fan. She even recently downloaded Twitter so she can get updates on game day from EUHV! Can you give us a little insight into your football background before EUHV? As I touched upon previously, I spent a couple of seasons with Murieston United. The team then disbanded as various players and staff moved on to new ventures so I was left searching for a new club. It was at this point Celtic had recently announced a new women’s set up and they were holding “open trials”. With nothing to lose, my parents drove me through to Glasgow to trial and I was delighted to be asked to join their U17 squad. I spent 4 really enjoyable seasons there progressing into the

THE BIG INTERVIEW - NICHOLA STURROCK women’s reserve squad. I had the opportunity to train and in the occasional bounce match play with and against some of our nations top players such as Christie Murray and Jo Love. It was pretty cool to be part of the initial set up at Celtic and my gran was unbelievably proud to see me in the hoops. I chose to leave Celtic a year into my studies at Edinburgh University as I found the travel too difficult to manage with my studies. I had a few short spells with Hamilton Accies, Hibs and Boroughmuir before I settled at
their reserve squad which was an honour as I’d never captained a team before and this was where I feel I really grew as a player. The league wasn’t the most competitive but I got time on the ball and gained confidence in myself, something I’d always lacked due to limited experience having not played much club football. I really enjoyed the togetherness of our squad, I made some really strong friendships during my time there and some of my favourite football memories are from that time.
“I SPENT A REALLY ENJOYABLE FEW YEARS AT SPARTANS ALTHOUGH MY BIGGEST FRUSTRATION WAS I NEVER REALLY BROKE THROUGH INTO THE SWPL TEAM.” Spartans. The location worked better for me and I was impressed with the facilities at Ainslie Park. I spent a really enjoyable few years at Spartans although my biggest frustration was I never really broke through into the SWPL team. In hindsight, I don’t think I was ready at that time. I was given the opportunity to captain
24
Through Spartans I met Mike and when he joined the university set up I was in my final year so played a season at EUWAFC under his coaching. When he took up the coaching position at Hutchison Vale I jumped at the chance to join as I saw this as my opportunity to establish myself as an SWPL player whilst working with
a coach I knew and respected. I loved my time at EUWAFC and I’m still actively involved in the club as the women’s 2nd team head coach. Personally I’ve thrived on the EUHV partnership as it brought together my football and has given me the perfect environment to grow and develop not only as a player but also as a coach. Growing up where did you usually play position wise and what do you enjoy most? Back at Murieston United I was a striker! I don’t have the height for defence or the speed for the wings! I’ve always enjoyed scoring goals but these have been far rarer in recent seasons as I’ve found myself playing in midfield and at a higher level. I really enjoy attacking midfield - the “10” role where you can be creative in attack. I always remember as a U17 being dropped for a few games and when I complained to my dad he replied “you don’t want to be seen as a luxury player!" It wasn’t a compliment! But it was an important lesson EUHV - AUGUST 2018

EUHV - AUGUST 2018
THE BIG INTERVIEW - NICHOLA STURROCK
for me at a young age as I had to make sure I was a name the coach couldn’t leave off the team sheet. So whilst I’ve always had a target to score goals, I’ve tried to focus on improving other aspects of my game which can benefit the team such as turn overs of the ball and defensive positioning off the ball. Still, nothing beats the feeling of scoring! Looking in depth at your time with Spartans, you suffered a very serious knee injury which saw you out of action for a lengthy period of time. Can you go into detail on what the injury was, how it happened @euhvfootball
and how it felt to be sidelined? Yeah I had a grade 2 strain on my medial ligament in my knee which put me out for a few months. It definitely could have been a lot worse as it wasn't a rupture so no operation was needed. I was out for 3 and a half months, firstly resting and then rehab to try and strengthen it back up. It happened when I was playing for the reserves up in Inverness. It was a Scottish cup game and we went up with only 11 players. I went in for a tackle about 10 minutes into the game and came out worse! I actually went back on to the pitch but my
next touch of the ball was intercepting a pass and I knew straight away with the pain that it was something more than a knock. I was quite upset initially. No one likes being injured and I was in a lot of pain and had a 4 hour journey home to endure. My parents had just left the country for an extended holiday also so I didn't have much help on hand when I did get back to Edinburgh. I was in a full leg brace for a few days until the physio had sourced a smaller knee brace which I then wore for a number of weeks to help support the knee whilst it healed. It was a tough few

THE BIG INTERVIEW - NICHOLA STURROCK months as I was not only working full time at summer coaching camps, but I was also half way through my UEFA B licence so I was required to be up on my feet delivering most days. In that aspect the sideline from playing wasn't too bad as I was still keeping busy but of course I was desperate to get back playing.
and other longer term injuries and my initial fear when I couldn't run after that tackle was "its my ACL". And you start to worry and think about the long term impact, surgery etc. So to see myself back on the pitch after only a few months I was incredibly happy and the club photographer was in the right place
“WHEN HUTCHISON VALE REACHED OUT TO ME I HAD TO MAKE A VERY TOUGH CHOICE TO LEAVE SPARTANS. There's a great photo of you out there showing your face after you scored for Spartans having come back from that injury. Can you express how it felt firstly just getting back on the pitch and then to score that goal? Yeah that is one of my favourite football photos! Anyone who's had an injury - no matter how small or severe - will know that feeling when you get back competing. I was unbelievably happy to be back playing. I also felt really fortunate that the severity of the injury wasn't as bad as it could have been. I have many friends and team mates who have had ACL ruptures
28
at the right time to capture that moment! You mentioned that you were frustrated at not breaking into the first team at Spartans. As someone who has progressed through the pathway of youth football into a senior development team then found it difficult to step up into the first team, what message do you have for other girls who may find themselves in a similar situations? Don't give up! Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Looking back I do believe that when I was at Spartans I wasn't fully ready to play SWPL football. I hadn't had a lot of club/game experience so moving
to the development team was the right step for me to take. Don't get me wrong, at that moment in time I struggled to see if that way. I felt I was good enough and wasn't being given my chance. At the reserves I played 90 minutes every week in a league where I was able to gain confidence and develop technically so I began to enjoy playing again. At that time some people commented that I should be pushing myself and challenging myself in a division above. Reflecting back I don't see my time with the development group as a backwards step, I see it as a sideways step off the path which has led me to same place I was always looking to go which was first team SWPL football. Even though I was enjoying my time with the reserves, my target was still SWPL football. That was what drove me during every game. I wanted to be the best player on the pitch every game in the hope our first team would come back and say "yeah you're ready now". As it happens, they didn't. Maybe they would have had I stayed another season or two, EUHV - AUGUST 2018

THE BIG INTERVIEW - NICHOLA STURROCK
30
EUHV - AUGUST 2018
THE BIG INTERVIEW - NICHOLA STURROCK but when Hutchison Vale reached out to me I had to make a very tough choice to leave Spartans. I actually wouldn't have had the confidence to make that jump to SWPL without the opportunity to play in the reserve squad for a number of seasons. So my advice is don't give up. Some doors will close on you, others will open and some you might need to batter on to get where you want to be. Good things don't come to those who wait, they come to those who work hard! You mentioned that you studied at Edinburgh University. What attracted you to studying at Edinburgh University and were you aware of EUWAFC before you arrived here? In secondary school Social Education we had to do a project on a future career. I'd always wanted to become a PE teacher so I did some research into how I would go about this. Edinburgh was one of the Universities I looked into and from that moment on I was set on studying there. I didn't actually know too much about @euhvfootball
EUWAFC even during my first year studying. I actually signed up for trials with the volleyball team during fresher week. I've no idea why I did that because I clearly don't have the height for volleyball. I ended up not going to the trials and for my first year of uni I didn't play any university sport! Is it fair to say that things didn't quite go to plan with your studies? Can you share how your experience at Edinburgh University led to you joining the team at the Spartans Community Football Academy? Ha yes that's probably understatement of this whole interview. So I studied an Honours degree but due to failing a piece of coursework towards the end of my final year I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts instead. This meant I didn't gain my teaching qualification. It all came about pretty quickly, right before graduation so I was stressing out! I'd been preparing myself for going to do my probationary year of teaching after the summer, and suddenly I had

EUHV - AUGUST 2018
THE BIG INTERVIEW - NICHOLA STURROCK no honours degree, I was unemployed and had no game plan. This is where football has been a lifesaver for me! During my work experience week at high school I had spent a week with the Scottish FA Development Officer in West Lothian. After graduation I reached out to the office to speak to the DO on the off chance he might remember me and be in a position to help me out. He did remember me! And was happy to offer me some casual coaching hours. Throughout my studies I had come across The Academy and whilst playing for Spartans I had a Saturday job working behind the cafe there, so I reached out to them looking for a reference for this potential coaching job with the SFA. The boss at The Academy hadn't heard about the outcome of my studies, and hearing I was looking for work asked me to join their team. A coaching vacancy had recently come up and with more hours being offered it was too good to turn away given my circumstances. 5 years later I've found myself in a full time job!
@euhvfootball
Your involvement in EUWAFC is probably the longest of anyone still at the club. Can you briefly outline your history with the EUWAFC setup as you've had a few different roles over the years? Yeah I think I'm the longest serving member in some capacity although there are a few not far behind me! As I mentioned briefly earlier, I didn't play in my first year of studies so my first interaction with EUWAFC was in September 2010. At that time the club had one team. I played a couple of games during that academic year but as I went into my third year of studies I decided not to play. I was on teaching placement in a school in Falkirk so prioritised my time there. I came back in to the team for my final year which was the same time that Mike arrived at the club. I enjoyed my final year and made some really good friends at the club. In 2013 after I graduated I knew I'd need to keep myself busy until I sorted out my plan and got a job, I reached out to Mike to see if I could stay involved with EUWAFC.
I continued to train with the team and then come September I helped at the university team trials. During that academic year I helped out at sessions whenever I could. Mike had a vision to grow the club, have more teams and more players. In the following years the second and third teams were formed. I supported the third team for one year before taking up the Head Coach position with the second team where I've been ever since! You have also been involved in the Scottish Student National Squad setup as well. How has it been working as a coach within that setup, working with some of the players who you play alongside at EUHV? The SS National squad role came about after I saw an advert online. This was something I’d been selected for as a student during my studies but due to a variety of factors the home nations fell through. When I saw the advert looking for staff to help form a squad to compete at the 2016 home nations tournament

“I ONLY HAD ONE REAL IDOL WHILST GROWING UP AND THAT WAS HENRIK LARSSON. I ABSOLUTELY ADORE THE GUY. A NATURAL STRIKER.”
Every coach aspires to work with the best players in the country. The SS set up compliments the work I’m doing at EUWAFC without impacting on my own playing career so it was an easy decision for me to continue my coach development working with some very good players. It's given me an opportunity to learn from other top coaches which I've enjoyed also. EUHV have had a bit of a mixed first half to the season. How do you feel it has gone thus far? This season has been a challenge. Everyone has improved and upped their game from last season. I think it's fair to say it's been a mixed season for most teams in SWPL 2 with the exception

How did it feel to be voted as the club's Player of the Season last year? I was over the moon. Genuinely over the moon. I've picked up a couple of awards at previous clubs but this one is the most significant. I think because it was the first season I'd really felt like a first team core player made it a special one. It's nice to get any recognition but to get it from your team mates and friends it means more to you. Everyone has a team they support or follow, what is your team and
why? I'm a season ticket holder at Easter Road and have been for the past 3 years. When I growing up I was Celtic daft, my Gran was a huge fan and we would watch the games together. During my teenage years I didn't really spend any time watching football. Being in Edinburgh and working in football, I started to spend my Saturday's at ER and I found it helped my coach development watching and analysing games. Do you have any football role models or inspirations from the professional game or who you have played with? I only had one real idol whilst growing up and that was Henrik Larsson. I absolutely adore the guy. A natural striker. My goal celebrations when I was younger were always the same as his. I also enjoyed watching Ronaldinho play. His fun and creative style of play really pulled me into the game. In recent years, I've loved watching John McGinn at Easter Road. Everyone has a preference when it EUHV - AUGUST 2018

comes to football boots. What are you wearing this season? This season I've stuck with Nike Tiempos. I've got about 5 pairs of the same boots in different colours ha. Very comfortable! Where do you see yourself being in five years time? I haven't had a chance to think this one through yet. My answer to this question 5 years ago would have been a Football Development Officer/ Manager. I've recently stepped into this role at The Academy. So my next few years will be focused on doing this job and seeing what doors it may open for @euhvfootball
me. Do you expect to still be involved in football in some capacity in the future either through coaching or in an organisational role? Yes definitely. I see myself still being involved football long after playing. I badged myself up not only for my day job, but to allow me to do some coaching alongside my playing in preparation for when I can no longer play. I hope to have sufficient experience and qualifications to allow me to comfortably step in to help a team from the dug out.
It would be an understatement to say that football is a massive part of your life. However do you have any other hobbies or interests? I enjoy going to the gym, does that count as part of football? When I'm not working/ coaching/playing, I enjoy going to the cinema, seeing friends and family and the occasional game of mini golf! Who are the best players you have had the experience of playing with and against? During my career I've played against many good players. At U15s at Murieston Hayley

THE BIG INTERVIEW - NICHOLA STURROCK Lauder was a standout player in our team. Christie Murray and Jo Love are two other players who I enjoyed watching and training against during my time at Celtic. Tell us something about yourself that we don't know? I was a member of the National Youth Choir of Scotland when I was younger. Who is the most famous person you have ever met? Dan Carter! Although I did once meet Susan Boyle at a pub in Livingston. In terms of music who do you enjoy listening
38
to and what's the best gig you've ever been to? I enjoy most music and artists, it depends on the mood what play-list goes on! I'm a big Ed Sheeran fan and caught him on his recent tour at Hampden. I've not been to many gigs but I thought that one was
brilliant. What's your favourite film? Tough question as I love films! Pretty Woman and The Bodyguard are two classics I could watch again and again. Toy Story is my go-to kids movie!

E
UHV maintained their unbeaten home record in the league with an impressive midweek performance against St Johnstone at Peffermill. EUHV started brightly and with only ten minutes on the clock Hume registered her fifth league goal of the campaign. The striker beat the offside trap to collect a through ball from Kerr inside the penalty area before picking her spot to place the ball beyond McIlraveyDavidson in the St Johnstone goal. The home side almost doubled @euhvfootball
their advantage just moments later when Smart played a similar ball through to Macleod only for the offside flag to go up. Macleod's disappointed lasted only a few minutes though as again Smart cut open the
St Johnstone defence with an excellent pass that found Macleod with space to take a touch into the penalty area before sending her left footed drive low beyond the goalkeeper to give EUHV a 2-0 advantage. As a physical half of

It was EUHV though that added a third goal only a few minutes after the restart. The striker wasn't to be deterred by the challenge as only two minutes later she again beat the offside trap to enter the penalty area and drive the ball low beyond the keeper at the near post to secure a 4-0 victory and well deserved three points for EUHV. Following the match Mike Ross commented, " Tonight we showed the level I know this team can play at. We played some very good phases of football at times and we deservedly went in 2-0 up at half time. We knew there would be a reaction from St Johnstone at half time, and although they started the 2nd half better our first attack led to a goal making it 3-0. We closed the game out well and I was really proud of all the players efforts tonight."

EUWAFC - TOUR 2018
EUWAFC
University Programme News Annual EUWAFC Tour - Split 2018
O
n Sunday 27th May 22 EUWAFC players from across all 3 teams departed from Edinburgh airport on the annual EUWAFC summer tour to Split, Croatia whilst fashioning their personalised tour t-shirts with entertaining nicknames. Having been to Krakow and Barcelona in recent years the expectations were high for five days of jam packed fun. The girls stayed in a youth hostel right in the centre of the city – very close to tourist attractions such as the Cathedral of Split and the Ferry Port. The next day, final year student Lily Chubb organised a kayaking tour from a beach at Marjan hill. The girls choose their partners carefully as our tour guide described the competitiveness of the final kayaking race. We then kayaked around the coast to a cliff

area where we could cliff jump and visit the beach bar – great fun was had by all! Unfortunately social secs Rebecca Gray and Steph Khoory couldn’t get the kayaking coordination together to come out of last place! Maybe next year! Split is known for its ferry connections to local islands and so the girls decided to take a boat across to local island Hvar where the
girls rented moped bikes. Despite it being some of the girls first times riding mopeds it was somewhat successful, with minimal injuries and only a few damages! Maybe one activity to skip for next year? Another great day of memories consisted of taking the bus to Krka to visit the famous waterfalls which did not disappoint. Although too early in the season

EUWAFC - TOUR 2018 for swimming, the views and walks were outstanding. EUWAFC tours always leave us with great memories, including the infamous Split bar crawl with an open bar, although it is difficult to say how many will remember this particular night. The notorious ‘Princess Dress’ also made a reappearance after its misplacement, meaning that whoever made the biggest mistake the night before had to suffer an evening in the large fancy dress number with resemblance to Princess Peach. Everyone had a blast over the 5 days away with great activities, relaxing beaches and amazing views. Tour 2018 was a memorable one and who knows what next year has in store.

“FIRST AWAY WIN LIFTS EUHV TO 8 POINTS ABOVE THE RELEGATION PLACES AHEAD OF THE SUMMER BREAK.”
n the birthday of recently signed goal keeper Jeni Currie EUHV travelled north for the second time this season to play Aberdeen. The hosts looking to make the home advantage count and EUHV visiting knowing the points were vital in climbing the table. The game started brightly for EUHV with Macleod striking the bar in the first few minutes. Aberdeen did however take the lead in the early stages through a very good finish high and into the top corner from a close and tight angle. This seemed to give Aberdeen life and they were working hard @euhvfootball
but struggling to create any clear cut chances. EUHV continued to look threatening as Murray picked out passes to the attacking line, keeping Mutch in the Aberdeen goal busy. It was the visitors with the majority of possession and chances in the first half
with Aberdeen pinned back, however EUHV couldn’t capitalise and the home side lead 1-0 into half time. It took just over 5 minutes after the restart for EUHV to hit the wood work again! Smart rose well to meet a Sturrock corner but

the header could only smash off the upright and Aberdeen cleared. Smart did however make her hard work count on the 55th minute with a terrific solo goal. After Brown slotted a ball over the midfield Smart connected well but with three defenders to beat the odds looked slim. Not to be deterred Smart powered past the red shirts and fired well out of reach of the diving keeper to level the score. The pressure continued from EUHV and after giving Sturrock too much space and time on the edge of the box they paid for it. 2-1 in the 62nd minute as the visitors took the lead for the first time in the match. A similar pattern continued in the second half with Aberdeen struggling to get out their half. The third goal arrived in the 77th minute after Smart set up Macleod on the left to shoot across the
48
goal and find the bottom corner. Aberdeen didn’t give up and did win a free kick high and wide in the final stages of the match only for a strong EUHV defence to keep the lines clear. As the final whistle blew the visitors knew the result was an important, but very well deserved three points away from home. Commenting on the game Mike Ross said, "Delighted with today’s win. The players put everything into the game and I’m delighted for
them as a group - they showed real character to come back with all 3 points. We started the game well today and hit the bar early but against the run of play Aberdeen hit us on the break and scored a well taken finish to make it 1-0. We created lots of chances in the first half but just couldn’t equalise. At half time we spoke about what we needed to do to convert our chances to goals. In the 2nd half we managed to do this and saw us score 3 good goals and hit the post also which could have increased the lead. The players have been working so hard in training recently and it’s always great to see what we work on put into games. We have been on a good run of form recently and we now look forward to the 2nd half of the season to see how high up the league we can finish."

KEY MOMENT Trailing by a goal, it took a brilliant solo run and finish from Katherine Smart to inspire the belief that EUHV could get something from this game. Her goal led the way for Sturrock and Macleod to seal the victory and a precious three points.

“I’D JUST SAY IT’S A TOTALLY DIFFERENT GAME. THE US GAME IS A LOT MORE FITNESS FOCUSED AND BELIEVES THAT THE FITTEST PLAYERS ARE THE ONES YOU WANT ON THE PITCH. I THINK THE UK GAME IS A LOT MORE TALENT FOCUSED AND IF A TEAM CAN MOVE THE BALL AROUND WELL ENOUGH, FITNESS WON’T BE AS MUCH OF AN ISSUE. IT’S ALL ABOUT READING THE GAME AND MOVING OFF THE BALL, NOT HAVING TO SPRINT AFTER EVERYTHING AND HOPING FOR THE BEST”

SPECIAL FEATURE - JENI CURRIE You are originally from Scotland right? Can you outline your footballing background in the UK? Yeah grew up here in East Lothian, played for a boys team until I was 11 and then moved to Musselburgh Windsor. From there I made the south east regional squad and various Scotland training camps. I was selected to play the Scottish schools u15’s and travelled to Wales for a tournament.
Can you outline the process that you went through as a potential student in the UK, wanting to study and play football over in the US? I met with a coach from Edinburgh that actually coached in the states, he was able to send out some film of me playing to a handful of coaches he had contact with and it was just down to me to pick the school I wanted to go to. I opted for a
“I THINK THE ONLY PROBLEM WAS THAT ABSOLUTELY NO ONE UNDERSTOOD ME (BECAUSE OF THE ACCENT).” Moved to Hearts when they started up about seven years ago. Played for Scotland u18’s in a tournament in Ukraine before going through a recruiter to get a scholarship in the US What made you decide you wanted to study and play football in the US? I think I was just looking for something new and different. I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do after high school and thought it was an exciting opportunity to keep playing football and study in a different country.
52
community college in Kansas (Hutchinson Community College) because of the quality of the team in the past years, the high number of international student athletes and the size of the school. From there it was pretty straightforward of signing a few papers and getting my student visa. Was that your first choice or did you have other options? I had other options but after talking to the coach (who was actually Irish) for a while, I knew this place was perfect
for me and he looks after his players and understands what it’s like to move halfway across the world How did you settle into life in the US when you first arrived? At first it was amazing, everything was so new and exciting that I don’t think it hit me how far away I was from home. Training twice a day, every day, and having class to go to, and study hall, I had such a busy schedule I really didn’t have time to even think about missing home. And because most of my team were in the same boat, it really brought us all together. I didn’t really get “culture shock” As some people do. I think the only problem was that absolutely no one understood me (because of the accent). I was the only Scottish person within a 50 mile radius and that forced me to learn the many Americanisms I still accidentally use now. I developed some weird sounding American accent just so that I wouldn’t have to keep repeating myself to everyone I came into contact with.

53
SPECIAL FEATURE - JENI CURRIE You went from Kansas to Western Illinois right? Can you detail the process of moving from Hutchinson CC to Western Illinois University? Yeah I did. Being an international student, I wasn’t very aware of the American system and had no real idea on how to transfer or when I should be contacting other schools. I left it later than I probably should have and only really started contacting universities after Christmas break and well into my last semester at HCC. I received countless replies from coaches apologising and telling
54
me their roster’s were full. I spoke to schools all over the country from Texas to Iowa, with no real success. I’d almost given up looking for a university when the coach from western Illinois got in contact and said they were looking to sign a keeper. I didn’t look too much into the school beforehand and didn’t even go for a visit. The head coach came to watch me train in Kansas and offered me a scholarship from there. I signed around two weeks before I graduated from HCC which was really cutting it close.
How do you feel the education system differs between the university system here and the further education system in the US? I think in some ways they’re pretty similar, we had to write essays, do exams, and write a thesis senior year. The thing I don’t like about the American system is that you are required to do a number of “gen eds” which are all very basic general education classes on English, maths, science, and public speaking (to name a few). Although most of this information I learned throughout high school, I was still
EUHV - AUGUST 2018
SPECIAL FEATURE - JENI CURRIE required to take all of these classes. This essentially wasted a lot of money on what I feel like could have been spent on classes more relatable to my major. I also feel like we were treated similar to high schoolers as a percentage of our final grades was made up of homework assignments and attendance, not just how well you did on exams or papers. I think the American system is a lot easier than British universities and can be manipulated with the use of extra credit and “bumping up grades” so to speak. Can you briefly explain how the US college/university football system works? You have different conferences across the country that all play at different levels. There’s the community colleges that are only 2 year schools play in the NJCAA. You then have the NAIA and NCAA which are 4 year universities (just different associations). The NAIA has 2 divisions within it and division 1 is comparable to the @euhvfootball
NCAA division 2. The NCAA has 3 divisions, division 1 being the highest level of college sports. Most athletes hope to attend a division 1 school. From my experience, It’s a pretty lengthy process to ensure you are eligible to play in the NCAA as you have to go through a lot of paperwork making sure you’ve never been paid to play the sport you are attending university to play.
They’re very thorough in making sure all the athletes stick to the NCAA amateurism requirements. And in terms of the football on the field. How does it differ to here in the UK? I’d just say it’s a totally different game. The US game is a lot more fitness focused and believes that the fittest players are the ones you want on the pitch. I think the UK game
facebook.com/EUHVfootball
55
SPECIAL FEATURE - JENI CURRIE is a lot more talent focused and if a team can move the ball around well enough, fitness won’t be as much of an issue. It’s all about reading the game and moving off the ball, not having to sprint after everything and hoping for the best Given the success of the US Women's National team it is clear the US collegiate system is instrumental in the development of the game over in the US. Do you feel that link is one of the key aspects missing in the development of young players back home? I think in the US, there’s so much focus on sports in universities that it would be a waste not to use that to their advantage. I definitely feel like at universities in the UK, sports just aren’t as important or talked about. University sports in the US are broadcast all over the tv networks in the country. One of the most watched tournaments is the NCAA D1 basketball playoffs which brings in so much revenue that they can use to
56
improve and develop the programs. I do think the key is in the money and teams can use that to completely focus on
red, which meant almost everything we were given was either blue or red. The only time this became an annoyance is when
“MY FIRST SCHOOL WAS SPONSORED BY NIKE, SO EVERYTHING WE GOT FROM THE COLLEGE WAS NIKE BRAND, FROM BOOTS TO TRACKSUITS TO GK GLOVES.” player development. We are definitely missing that link in Scotland, especially in the women’s game. There just isn’t enough revenue to put money back into the game. Speaking of money, the American schools benefit massively from sponsorship deals with major sports labels don't they? Yeah, so basically, my first school was sponsored by Nike, so everything we got from the college was Nike brand, from boots to tracksuits to gk gloves. Everything was Nike. We were given a pair of boots, 3 strips, 4 pairs of gk gloves, running shoes, and countless items of sports clothing for training and travelling in. This was incredible and you never ran out of Nike items to wear. The colours of HCC were blue and
I transferred to WIU. WIU colours are purple and gold and they are sponsored by Adidas. This meant that I couldn’t make use of most of my HCC clothing or equipment as we weren’t allowed to wear a brand that wasn’t Adidas. I pretty much had to replace everything. In terms of playing football, what was a typical week like for you in the US? A week during season would usually start with having a Monday off training (to recover from the game the day before). Tuesday and Wednesday would be high intensity trainings lasting 2 hours usually mid afternoon, which included a lot of fitness work and some technical. Thursdays would be lighter in preparation for a league game on Friday. We would also have an hour of EUHV - AUGUST 2018

Our schedule of games sometimes meant we had two away games in one weekend which would have us leave on Thursday and not get back to campus until late Sunday night, sometimes into Monday morning. This was a bit of a pain as we were missing a lot of Friday classes and even sometimes Thursday classes that we had to make up for usually by doing assignments and writing essays on the bus travelling from game to game. At the end of the programme, what options were available to you? Could you stay in the US and continue to play or did you have to return to the UK? If you had options on the table what motivated you to return to Edinburgh? The only option was @euhvfootball
in my field of work. I could have potentially stayed in the states and coached another university team as a graduate assistant which would have allowed me to do my masters degree over 2 years, but I think I was just ready to come home and do a 1 year masters here in Edinburgh.
minored in Law Enforcement and Justice Administration so I also wanted to do something relating to that. Studying at Edinburgh, however, I only decided to do that once I came home and came to train with EUHV. And finally, so you've decided to stay in Edinburgh for football and further studies, what course are going to be studying? And how's your experience back in Edinburgh been so far? I’ll be studying MSc Psychology of Mental Health. It’s great to be back in Edinburgh. It feels like things are more permanent now
“I LOVE BEING PART OF THIS TEAM AND I CAN’T WAIT TO PLAY FOR THE UNIVERSITY TEAM TOO.” Now that you are back home, was studying a masters always in your plans or did you only decide when you came home? compared to how I’ve felt the past 4 years where I was constantly on the go and never really felt like anywhere was home. I’m so glad EUHV got in contact with me when I returned as I didn’t think I would be playing football again and enjoying it. I love being part of this team and I can’t wait to play for the university team too.
