Dear Readers So the countdown to Christmas starts here once again. So much to do and so little time to accomplish it all. Perhaps we ought to cultivate some navel gazing as a new hobby! If you’re stuck for an innovative present for the IT savvy in the family you could do worse than check out our feature on Page 57 ‘Best Gadgets Gifts for Christmas”. I have once again decided to get something off my chest regarding my view of the world of “Celebrity” so I hope you’ll forgive me - do read all the nonsense on Page 15! On a more serious note the work of The Horsley Community Fund is impressive and they would welcome your input too so please spare a moment to read all about them and the work they do for the community on Page 25. Equally the University of the Third Age has an incredible amount to offer you, so if you are unaware of what you are missing out on turn to the article on Page 29. At this time of year, I want to say a huge thank you to my wonderful deliverers of this magazine, without whom we would be lost. You know who you are, but thank you Ben, Margaret, Rebecca, Janet, Nicky and Oliver who cover the area from Effingham, the Horsleys through to Clandon. Lots of hard work greatly appreciated! Just a quick note to say we are moving so please take note of our new address and telephone nos. on Page 41. Have a wonderful Christmas and a super 2013! Diana Isherwood Stone Editor

The Woking Hospice shop in East Horsley is gearing up for its busiest time of the year, and the team is looking forward to receive all your unwanted goods and perhaps tempt you with some last minute bargains. It’s that time of year again: out with old and in with the new. In other words it’s the perfect time for a clear out, and that’s something shop manager Mary Richardson knows all about. “Many like to make room for new presents, while others wait until the New Year before bringing in those unwanted goods,” says Mary. “As long as they don’t throw them out but bring them here we’re delighted.” Now is also a great time to pick up some last minute presents and Christmas decorations, some are even new and still in their original wrapping! The shop is also selling ski-wear but you have to be quick as these items always gets snapped up quickly. Only a few months ago Mary and her volunteers celebrated the shops 1 year anniversary, which was marked with a team outing at the local tea shop. “Thank you to everyone who helped us celebrate, and not least to the local community for all the help and support that they’ve given us throughout the last 12 months,” added Mary. The shop raises vital funds for the Woking Hospice, which helps care for patients and their families locally. If you want to support the hospice you can donate your unwanted goods in store, or why not give some of your spare time and help out yourself? More volunteers are urgently needed, so pop in and have a chat with Mary next time you’re passing by.

The Cult of AND WHY I’M NOT BUYING IT Do you aspire to be famous? Do you want to be on Big Brother or head off to the jungle to put yourself through endless torture so that we can celebrate with you when you manage to swallow some unmentionable part of an animal. Do you have a desire for fame, just for fame’s sake or because it will give you an importance you feel is owed you? Apparently it is not unusual now to find children in our schools whose expectations of aggrandisement is so elevated that they will find life an incredibly disappointing and uninspiring trial, compared to their hopes and dreams. Simply because they are learning that the only way they can validate their existence is to become “famous”. How sad! Famous for what? Well if you go along with the current trend, it would be famous for marrying a footballer, perhaps having a brilliant set of sparkling white teeth and a new pair of spectacular breast implants. Then I’m thinking what would happen, is that you would buy into the idea that you really are an important and worthy person and be incredibly disappointed when a new version of you springs up in a couple of months and you are forgotten once again - that way lies madness! Of course fame for fame’s sake is not a new concept and many hundreds of years ago it was aspired to for slightly different reasons, those being that the only way to make your mark, or to make
a contribution, would be to actually do something noteworthy, e.g. be particularly virtuous, known for a particular skill as a great artist perhaps, fight bravely in a war and die gloriously doing so. So aspiration, as a quality itself and when put to good use, is also a great thing I guess. But here’s the important point, it’s what you do with your talents and not how sparkly your teeth happen to be, that is the really important thing here. The footballer’s wife may have achieved fame vicariously but that doesn’t mean she can’t use this to good ends by taking advantage of her position to help others, highlight causes, etc. There are many secondary benefits that can accrue if you use your fame wisely which can contribute hugely to society’s gain. In the run up to Christmas I am wondering what poor celebrities have signed up for another sweltering few weeks in the jungle—I will be watching maybe but if that’s what fame is, I certainly don’t envy them it! © Diana Isherwood Stone

A Very Vintage Christmas It’s mid December and your newly-bought Christmas tree is standing naked in the corner of your living room. So it’s to the loft, garage or shed to dig out that battered old box of decorations. If your box is anything like mine, you’ll probably find a past-its-best fairy with drooping wings, some purple and silver baubles from the Millennium and two crushed crackers from last year’s Christmas lunch (couldn’t bear to throw them away) tangled together with swathes of tinsel, garlands, non-functioning fairy lights and springs of plastic holly. Most of my hoard is cheap, garish and ultimately disposable. But there’s one very special part of the collection that I will never throw away. It’s a treasured set of old-style, hand painted tree decorations, made out of wafer thin glass. Vintage tree ornaments are an evocative sight for those of us who were children in the 1950s and 60s: each year when I unwrap my collection it takes me back to a time when Christmas seemed truly magical and exciting. Although I understand the reasons why hanging delicate glass baubles on the Christmas tree – within grabbing distance of little hands - is no longer a good idea, it’s sad to think that such beautiful items are no longer readily available. The tradition of making glass tree decorations dates back to 17th century Bohemia (the modern day Czech Republic) and Germany. Today’s familiar ball shapes had their origins at a place called Lauscha in Germany, where legend has it they were first created when glass blowers competed to see who could blow the largest
sphere before the molten glass popped. Those that survived were kept by the glassmakers’ wives, swirled with silver nitrate and sold at local markets as magic talismans, offering protection and blessing during the holy season. In 1848 a picture of the young Queen Victoria’s Christmas tree, hung with decorations brought from her husband Prince Albert’s native Germany, was published in the Illustrated London News. This sparked a copycat craze throughout Europe and soon whole families in the town of Lauscha were employed to mass-produce decorations – the menfolk blowing the glass and the women and children painting and finishing the ornaments. Later that century, German immigrants brought the same passion for glass decorations to America. Thanks to entrepreneur Frank Woolworth - who bought millions for his popular chain stores - what began as a cottage industry in Lauscha became an international phenomenon. By the mid-20th century new molding techniques had sped up mass production and reduced the cost of manufacture. In addition to the more conventional round and oval shapes, there were decorations shaped like musical instruments, stars, lanterns, mushrooms, snowflakes, snowy cottages and little figures of Santa Claus. My favourite ones were the exotic birds with silky fibre glass tails that clipped onto your tree and trembled like real birds every time the branches moved. Nowadays most Christmas tree ornaments are made out of plastic, but if you do happen to find a Lauschan treasure lurking at the bottom of your decorations box, take good care of it. Vintage tree ornaments are becoming highly collectable and you can find sets on Ebay and other online auction sites for between £15 and £30. By Claudia Leaf

The Seven Ages of Tax Planning - Adult
This is part of our series of articles discussing tax planning at certain periods of life. Adult This article looks at some tax planning opportunities which are generally available to all adults regardless of whether they are married, in business or employed or property-owners. The special opportunities for different circumstances will be covered in later articles. ISAs ISAs are probably the best known ‘tax break’ of them all. Anyone can pay in up to £11,280 this tax year into an ISA, and up half of this can go into a cash ISA. Investments held in an ISA are free of income tax (although there is no repayment of the tax credit on dividends) and free of any capital gains tax. With a contribution to an ISA each year a substantial fund can be built-up which is outside the income tax and capital gains tax nets. Pension contributions This is the other big almost universal tax break. Anyone under 75 can pay up to a total of £2,880 into a personal pension, even if they have no income or even are already in an employer’s pension scheme. If they have earnings and no employer’s pension scheme then they can pay in up to the amount of their earnings subject to a £50,000 limit. The pension fund has tax relief added to it (so a contribution of £2,880 becomes £3,600). Further, for any higher-rate taxpayer, there is additional tax relief. The pension fund does not pay tax on the income and capital gains it makes. On taking the pension (between 55 and 75) up to 25% of the fund can be taken as a (currently) tax-free lump sum and the rest used to provide an income which is subject to income tax.
Gift Aid Any gifts you make to charity could be under Gift Aid (unless you are not a tax payer). This enables the charity to claim back tax on the gift, effectively increasing it by 25%. In addition, higher-rate taxpayers can claim further tax relief themselves – 25% of the gift for 40% taxpayers and 37.5% for 50% taxpayers. EISs, Seed EISs and VCTs These are special tax reliefs offered to investors in smaller, and therefore often riskier, companies. Needless to say, the rules are complex, but the general position is that you get tax back on your investment, 30% for VCTs and EISs and 50% for the new SEISs. Provided the investment is held for three years (five for VCTs) this tax relief is permanent. On top of this, there is no capital gains tax on any sale proceeds after the investment has been held for three years. With an EIS you can also roll-over a capital gain made on another asset within three years before and one year after the investment, effectively deferring the tax. For SEIS, this is a complete exemption for a gain made during this current tax year – making the tax break one at 78% for the right circumstances. Inheritance Tax Reliefs Any gifts you make to individuals totalling £3,000 in any tax year are IHT-free, as are any gifts you make out of surplus income. But probably much more important is the fact that any gifts you make are normally ignored after seven years. A good programme of gifts during your lifetime can greatly reduce the eventual inheritance tax. Of course, any of these steps have to be done correctly to ensure they have the desired tax advantages.
If you are in any doubt as to whether any of these matters may affect your business and/or personal tax situation please contact: Keith Hardy at

The Horsleys Community Fund Support your community now and in the future
The Horsleys Community Fund was set up in 2010 in partnership with the Community Foundation for Surrey to inspire local giving for local needs. Althoug h the county of Surrey is one of the richest in the UK, government support is very limited and cannot meet the growing social and environmental needs we have in the villages. We already rely on a large network of groups, charities and volunteers to provide much appreciated local services; throug h investing in the Horsleys Community Fund we can enhance the work of these groups and take advantage of future opportunities.
How it works
There are two types of Funds that make up the Horsleys Community Fund; - a Permanent Invested Community Fund where donations are invested and the income generated each year is used to award grants to support community projects and activities which meet the Horsleys Fund criteria - an Immediate Impact Fund – this fund also builds from a number of donations and can be used immediately to help urgent specific needs. The Fund is steered by a local panel of East and West Horsley residents who aim to make sure that groups in need have access to the Fund – do contact Clare Mathias on 01483 281755 or Vic Simpson on 01483 283134.
Why the fund is needed
In the short time that the Fund has been established donations from organisations and individuals of £45,000 have built to a fund of over £70,000 with investment income, Gift Aid and Government matching. We have distributed nearly £6000 in grants with more applications pending.
We have supported : - older residents who often have restricted access to transport and services and are often in danger of isolation - facilities and experiences for young people throug h Clubs, activities and sports - community facilities which are focal points for the villages - projects which preserve and improve the villages’ heritage, culture and environment However there is increasing demand in need (over £27,000 in grant applications was unable to be met by the Fund) and to ensure we can respond we need to raise more money.
Please act now !
There are many people in our villages who want to give to local causes but don’t know where to start --- giving throug h the Horsleys Fund provides an easy way to ensure that your donation makes a real difference to the people of our villages. It is tax efficient, works in perpetuity, and attracts Gift Aid – rig ht now, for a limited time period, we can obtain matched funding from the Government under a new programme called Community First. For example : for every £1000 donated to the permanent fund for the Horsleys, we can match it with a further £500 from the Community First programme. Taking Gift Aid into account this becomes £1750 which makes giving now a compelling reason to invest in our community rather than let the Exchequer distribute our taxes elsewhere !! This is a Fund for everyone and any donation, no matter how small will work hard and create opportunities to support life in the Horsleys. The Winter Fuel Allowances are soon due – if you do not need it, could you think about donating it ? The Steering Panel would be delig hted to discuss the Horsleys Fund in more detail with potential donors and potential recipients; it is the villages’ fund so please do let us have your feedback. Please contact Clare Mathias on 01483 281755 or go to the website www.cfsurrey.org.uk/horsleys and check us out!

Sally found that working in the corporate world over a lengthy duration exposed her to the plethora of customer complaints within the industry born from staff not having the right levels of knowledge and expertise and a high turnover of staff. Sally felt that in this world the emphasis on customer care was weak as it had become too much of a commercial “cash cow” for companies who were not ploughing back the money into the ongoing support that Landlords needed. In speaking to hundreds of Landlords over several years, Sally knew that the core principles needed to return. Sally also recognised that the way in which we all do business is changing too. Over the last two decades, we saw the world change - large corporations were dominant and call centres and depersonalization was seen as progressive and modern. In our race to have non-geographic telephone numbers and dozens of separate departments, we lost one key ingredient to successful business – The personal touch.
Like most people, Sally found that being 5th in the queue to someone in another part of the country that didn’t know or care personally frustrating and wanted to offer her clients something more. Sally believes that people have naturally gravitated back to wanting to do business with people they know. Someone local that they can have a rapport with, someone that they can build a long and lasting relationship with. People want the reassurance that when they call the phone will be answered and they want to know that the same people are going to be there in 6 / 12 / 24 months time. Sally understands that we all want to do business with people whom we KNOW LIKE and TRUST So Sally left the corporate world and set up SurreyLets at the end of 2008, a business that has been in constant growth and based very much on personal recommendation and trust.

Horsley U3A: 500 Members and 50 Activity Groups and still growing! U3A stands for the University of the Third Age, a self-help organisation set up by and for older people no longer in full time work. It is not a University but a nationwide collection of 870 local organisations that aim to help people over 50 continue to be active and to learn in their “third age. The activities cover whatever leisure, creative and educational subjects local members want and have someone able to lead them. The key aims are enjoyment and individual benefit.
Horsley U3A was set up in April 2008 to serve the residents of East and West Horsley and adjoining areas. To the surprise of its founders – given the number and variety of existing societies in the Horsleys - it uncovered both a wide range of hitherto unmet interests and a multitude of underused skills. In less than five years membership has risen from 170 to about 500. There has been a matching growth in interest groups from under 20 to around 50. Interest or activity groups are at the heart of U3A. They cover games like bridge, mah-jong, croquet and table-tennis; the arts and music, including painting, drawing and playing and appreciating music; science and technology, from astronomy through computing and general science to transport and industrial archaeology; fitness, including walking, cycling and Scottish dancing; languages; literature; and natural history. There are also social activities such as wine appreciation, theatre visits and trips to historic places. The range of interest groups continues to expand and is limited only by the interests, skills and knowledge of members and the input that each member chooses to give. Apart from the interest groups there are also regular meetings open to all members on the fourth Wednesday morning of the month in East Horsley Village Hall. Doors open at 9.45 am for a 10.30 start giving new members the opportunity to meet our Welcome Team, to have a free cup of tea or coffee, talk to friends and to catch up on the latest U3A and activity group news. The formal proceedings begin at 10.30 with an address by an invited speaker chosen to be entertaining as well as informative. If you would like to know more or join Horsley U3A please see our website at www.horsleyu3a.org.uk, contact our Membership Secretary, Fred Onslow on 01483 282180 or e-mail fredonslow@gmail.com or come along to one of our monthly meetings Chairman Clive Smee

A huge THANK YOU from the Raleigh School In an earlier edition of The Horsley Directory, Diana Isherwood-Stone kindly donated space to advertise events that the Raleigh School were organizing as part of their fundraising appeal to build some additional space called “The Falcon Wing in the School. The appeal was a resounding success due largely to the generous and kind donations of a community uniting as one to give support to the local school. The appeal raised 70K in just four months which was a substantial amount of money enabling the project to proceed. On Friday 21st September Sir Paul Beresford attended the school to formally open The Falcon Wing which was well attended by members of the community who had greatly supported the project and the event was additionally covered by BBC Surrey radio.
The Raleigh School is an oversubscribed state school offering and its attending children who consistently perform well above average. The schools popularity attracts numerous families to the area is considered a real asset to the local economy. The pressure of being a hugely popular oversubscribed school is just one of the reasons behind the school requiring additional teaching space for the children. This new teaching space is now in situ and being used by the children who are delighted to enjoy their lovely new teaching space, the space this has made available in the school means the school now can have a dedicated library and larger ITC suite and eventually a Performing Arts Centre.
Mrs O Neill, Headteacher, on behalf of The Raleigh School, would like to say a Massive THANK YOU to everyone who kindly contributed and supported the Falcon Wing Appeal.

Christmas Goes Crackers If you’re fed up with your Uncle Jack’s unfunny one-liners this Christmas, why not retreat to a quiet corner and find a bit of comic relief away from the relatives. From classic cats to depressed rabbits, we have enough Christmas cheer to keep you laughing well into the New Year.
The Far Side Gallery 1 By Gary Larson If there’s any doubt that Gary Larson is some kind of comic genius, it was dispelled when they built a museum in San Francisco and filled it with his cartoons. Seeing the world through Larson’s eyes is viewing it through a pair of Dame Edna-style glasses. He finds the funny in the ordinary and I guarantee you’ll never look at cows and chickens in quite the same way again. The Far Side books can be passed from grandparents to parents to children and all will be equally tickled by Larson’s humour. Simon’s Cat Vs. The World! Simon Tofield Not since Garfield has a cartoon cat so captured the nation’s heart. Simon’s cat spends his days terrorising and tormenting his long-suffering owner but this time, it’s the puss that’s under threat. With a new kitten on the scene, Simon’s Cat is facing a power-struggle of a magnitude he’s never known before. Forget fighting dead
flies…this time it’s war. Life-long cat fan Tofield has had years of feline experience, and it shows. The new cartoons are full of pure moggy magic. The Best of “Punch” Cartoons. Helen Walasek, Prion Books Limited ‘Punch’ magazine may have closed its doors in 2002 but its legendary status lives on. This is the biggest collection of Punch cartoons ever and it’s one to be savoured. It’s essential reading for all fans of humour and satire, with no holds barred and nowhere safe to hide. The selection was made by Helen Walasek of the Punch Cartoon Library and it’s definitely to be treasured. With 600 of the best to flick through, you’d better avoid doing it in one sitting, or you might end up Punch drunk. The Best of Matt 2012 Matthew Pritchett Looking back over the last twelve months, you would expect cartoons on the Olympics, the
Diamond Jubilee, the recession and everything else inbetween. This multi award-winning cartoonist captures the spirit of the nation in his own inimitable way. It’s a subtle mixture of wit and satire that will have you chuckling into your pudding. His almost haphazard drawing style is quirky and suggestive, making you feel like he’s capturing British life on the fly. A brilliant way to look back over the year. The Book of Bunny Suicides. Andy Riley Poor bunny. Here we are, taking pleasure in his impending pain. It sounds terribly fiendish and it’s definitely not for Peter Rabbit fans but Riley’s cartoons somehow manage to maintain a touch of innocence in the macabre. The premise is simple and yet Bunny’s plans to end his days become more and more elaborate and ingenious as the book goes on. It brings new meaning to the phrase ‘not a happy bunny’. I guarantee that you’ll laugh out loud.
Special Edition
Garfield Going for Gold Jim Davis Timed to coincide with London 2012, this special edition is one of the classic sports strips. He may have been around since the 70s but Davis’ furry anti-hero hasn’t grown out of taunting his owner with violence towards his canine counterpart, Odie and of laziness, gluttony, sarcasm and a hatred of Mondays. You gotta love a cat like that.

TRAVEL
Nat u r al b e aut y a n d v i b r a nt c it i e s
‘It’s the most beautiful land human eyes have ever seen’, said Christopher Columbus as he marvelled at this gem of an island, its lush mountains and virgin beaches lapped by the clear waters of the Caribbean, barely 100 miles from Florida. In this once troubled land, history is always within reach, but the real charm lies in the ever changing scenery and colourful cities. Take Santiago de Cuba, nestling on a vast aquamarine bay meandering, almost deserted, in and out of the mangrove, with its sturdy del Morro fortress and Granma island where rickety houses on stilts jostle along the shore. Beyond the winding lanes, the grand churches and colonial buildings festooned in bougainvillaea, coffee plantations climb up the slopes of the Sierra Maestra, among flame and papaya trees, wild lemon and pines. Up there at nearly 4000 feet, the air is cool and on a clear day, the panorama over Cuba’s second city dazzles you with colour and light. It’s a fair drive across the island but the best way to discover the rural heartlands; here a grove of carob trees, there the feathery blossom of jacarandas, a patch of cassava or the forlorn chimney of an old sugar mill. Pretty towns are sprinkled around Camaguey, famous for ballet and clay pots, Sancti Spiritus with its shaded arcades, Cienfuegos, the ‘Pearl
Colourful Cuba of the South’ - set among flowering trees and elegant Italian style buildings. But framed by mountains clad in jungle and waterfalls, Trinidad is the jewel of them all, the mirror image of a nostalgic island where bicycles and horse-drawn carts outnumber conventional traffic. The heart of the town is a UNESCO site, a maze of colonial buildings, blue, yellow, pink or pistachio green, with beautiful ironwork and red roofs glowing in the sun. In the cobbled alleyways, lace and embroidery flap in the breeze, drums echo in hidden courtyards and on the splendid Plaza Mayor, the old sugar capital enjoys its afternoon siesta. Meanwhile the steam train takes a handful of visitors to Sugar Mill Valley for fabulous views of hills and vales and sleepy villages sheltering under the mango trees. Heading west, luminous rice fields bask in the sunshine, rare birds and sea cows gather on the Zapata peninsula and soon, the capital beckons. Even for seasoned travellers, Havana defies
imagination with its swirling kaleidoscope of colours and sounds, stunning palaces and crumbling ruins, wide boulevards and tangled lanes, revamped Cadillacs, side-cars, three-wheeler scooter taxis and elegant horse-drawn carriages for tourists. The craft market sells Cuban dolls and hammocks while flower girls in bright costumes pose for pictures on Cathedral Square. It’s a wonderful dizzying city where you can eat al fresco, escape to nearby beaches, climb up to the fortress or follow the Hemingway trail to the fishing village of Cojimar. But the must-do excursion is to the hill town of Vinales, shaded by pine and orange trees, where pretty verandas frame every house in pastel colours. You can take a boat trip on an underground river to the Cave of the Indian Chief, partake of a farmer’s lunch in the forest and enjoy the view at the Jasmine Belvedere, overlooking the limestone hills which rise dragon-like from the valley floor. With its natural beauty and vibrant cities, Cuba is truly enticing. by Solange Hando

Buying Christmas presents for gadget fans can be difficult, because they don’t tend to wait for special occasions to splash out - but before you reach for the stand-by option of perfume or socks, it’s worth thinking laterally. The answer to the question “what do you buy for the person who has everything?” is often “accessories”.
The Best Gifts For
What do you buy the person who has everything?
Gadget Fans
This doesn’t necessarily mean brightly coloured cases or novelty items that plug into laptops’ USB ports, although of course there are plenty of those to choose from; novelty USB items are this decade’s equivalent of hilarious musical socks, and best avoided. In many cases accessories can make gadgets even more useful. Take the Eye-Fi Connect memory card, for example: it’s a camera memory card with built-in Wi-Fi, so it turns any camera into a connected one for instant uploading. It’s not as expensive as you might expect - at the time of writing a 4GB Eye-Fi Connect X2 is £32.25 on Amazon - and it will genuinely delight any camera fan. Just make sure it’ll fit: Eye-Fi cards are designed to fit in SDHC slots, which you’ll find in most but not all modern cameras. Another camera favourite is the Gorillapod, an innovative camera tripod that can hang on to almost anything. It’s available for everything from smartphones to enormous digital SLRs, and prices start at around £10. Unlike traditional tripods it doesn’t
need to sit on the ground: you can wrap it around lampposts and tree branches, hang it from tables or put it on your head. There are no shortage of useful accessories for iPads, and one of the best is Logitech’s Ultrathin Keyboard (around £75), which essentially turns an iPad into a small laptop. If you’d rather spend a little less, there are tablet styluses for writing notes and drawing for as little as £6.30 (Griffin’s Apple iPad Stylus), rising to around £22 for the Pogo Sketch Pro. Such styluses work not just on iPads, but any touchscreen device including rival tablets and smartphones. As you’ve probably noticed in the shop, Apple owners are particularly well served by accessories: you can’t wander round the supermarket without tripping over a pile of iPhone alarm clocks and speaker docks. Such items make great presents, but be careful which ones you buy: with the arrival of the iPhone 5
in September, Apple dumped its existing dock connector in favour of a smaller connector called Lightning. Accessories designed for the iPhone 4 and earlier will still work, but they’ll need an expensive adapter for the iPhone 5, updated iPods and updated iPads - and in some cases the cost of the adapter may be more than the cost of the accessory. It’s definitely worth checking which version the person has before spending any money - advice that also applies to very useful multi-device chargers such as the Bluelounge Refresh (£69.99), which can charge multiple gadgets simultaneously. If you’re still stuck for ideas, there’s always the famous answer to the present for someone who has everything: a box for them to put it all in. Rather than a box we’d recommend a bag, and we particularly like the Unit Portables bags (£59.99 from Muazo. co.uk): while they’re designed to accommodate gadgets, chargers and their accessories, they’re smart, stylish and available in a range of eye-catching colours.

Horsley Recipe of the Month
Seasonal Recipe These delightful mini fruit and nut topped cakes are perfect for giving as a festive foodie present. Simply wrap in clear cellophane and tie with gold ribbon or place in small gift boxes. Preheat the oven to 150C/300F/gas 2. Grease and line the base and sides of a 20cm square cake tin with a double thickness of greased, greaseproof paper. Place the butter and sugar in a large bowl and cream together until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs. Sift together the flour and spices then fold into the creamed mixture. Fold in the lemon zest, dried fruit, glace cherries and nuts and mix thoroughly. Spoon the mixture into the prepared cake tin and smooth the surface. Use the back of a metal spoon to make a slight dip in the centre (this will help to give an even rise). Bake in the preheated oven for 3¼ - 3 ½ hours or until firm to the touch and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin. When the cake is completely cold, use a sharp knife to cut it into 9 smaller square cakes. Brush the sides of each cake with a little apricot jam. Divide the marzipan into 9 pieces. Dust a surface lightly with icing sugar and roll each piece out to a strip long enough to go around each cake. Wrap the strips around the cakes pinching the ends together to seal. Top each cake with a selection of cherries, nuts and apricots. Tie a ribbon around each cake if liked.
