Green light to address serious safety risk A long overdue project to add pedestrian and bicycle access adjacent to the bridge across North Maroochy River near the turn off to Seib Rd is a step closer to being realised. The news from Member for Ninderry, Dan Purdie MP, that a shared funding commitment has been made by the Department of Transport and Main Roads and by Sunshine Coast Council is music to the ears of Eumundi State School parent Hejira Convery. “Our family live just 1,200m from the businesses and school at Eumundi but we have to cross a
‘bridge of doom’ to get there,” Hejira said. “We have experienced frightening near misses and so have others as the traffic on the Eumundi -Noosa Rd is thick and fast these days. We’re relieved to hear that this project is one step closer to being built and just want to see it finished before someone gets hurt walking to town or cycling to Eumundi Conservation Park. Lots of people signed a petition calling for a safe pathway across the river, and we’re looking forward to giving the ‘bridge of doom’ a brighter name in our family,” she said.

Did you know the Noosa Hinterland is outperforming other regions? “We are experiencing large volumes of buyer inspections, multiple offers on many properties, pre-market sales and short days on market. There are buyers missing out and waiting for their dream home to go on the market. Some of our sellers are surprised at how much their property has increased in value.” – Sirah Robb, Principal Call Wythes today and discover the value of your property in the current market.

Years of negotiations with Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads have paid off, with Council allocating funding for a shared access bridge, adjacent to the existing Seib Road Bridge. Before I was elected, locals told me how they have been fighting for years for safer pedestrian access across the North Maroochy River, and I vowed to make it happen. All of our hard work and persistence has finally paid off. When I met with the Minister last year, he indicated his support for this vital safety upgrade, and I am confident now that Council have allocated their share of the funding, the State Government will do the same. I am grateful for the support of our new Divisional Councillor, David Law, along with former councillors Greg Rogerson and Stephen Robinson and the Mayor, Mark Jamieson, who have all been strong advocates. It’s a great example of the positive outcomes that can be achieved when all levels of Government work together. When Parliament resumes this week, I will be asking the Minister for an update, so stay tuned.

From our schools Farewell and thank you Anna!
School upgrade report
Eumundi State School’s Business Manager since 2013, Anna-Maria Williams was farewelled recently at an emotional surprise morning tea. Generous tributes were paid by Principal Mick Connors and staff at the school. Anna has worked as an administrator in country schools across Queensland since the mid ‘70s.
Work is well underway so that Eumundi State School will next year include a state of the art facility consisting of eight new classrooms, two new toilet blocks, a new music and art facility, a new school canteen and a large undercover space for wet weather play. Classrooms will be equipped with smart technology and flexible spaces to provide for 21 century learners.
Her role at Eumundi was described as an integral part of the school administration and leadership team over the last seven years and that the school community will miss her knowledge, work ethic and passion for the school. Principal Mick Connors said, “For me there are not enough words to describe Anna as a person but generous, efficient, cheerful, industrious, reliable, considerate, meticulous, dependable, hardworking, fun loving and loyal spring to mind. The positive atmosphere and culture that Anna created for staff, parents and students alike in the office is a credit to her and her outlook on work and life.” Anna will now pursue retirement adventures with husband Glynn who retired as Principal, Eumundi State School some years ago. 8
Sleep Rough fundraiser Noosa District SHS Interact Club assisted by the Rotary Club of Cooroy, held its annual Sleep Rough event in late July. Lead organiser and Head of Department Learning enhancement Mr Murray Gordon said “A record breaking number of 83 students from the Pomona and Cooroy campuses slept on cardboard at the cold Mimburi campus”. The sleep rough event raised a record-breaking $4900 for Street Swags, an organisation which assists the homeless by providing swags or food assistance. Cooroy Rotary Club members prepared and donated “amazing” soups which the Sleep Rough volunteers had for dinner.
Nanna’s special caramel slice I have been lucky to grow up with my Nanna and her special treats all through my childhood and into my teenage years. For as long as I can remember there was always the wafting smell of home-cooked treats whenever we entered the house. From a very young age I have had a fascination with food and always paid attention to how my Nanna cooked and worked her magic in the kitchen. This included overlooking my licking the bowl and stealing biscuits in the kitchen. There was always so much love whenever she cooked. This recipe means so much to my family, as it reminds us of the cheeky food stealing cuties we were, whenever Nanna cooked these treats. I hope this no-bake caramel slice will remind you of someone you love as family and as a cook. Thank you Nanna for teaching me how to cook and how to enjoy food. Ingredients: 1 packet Arnott’s biscuits 250 gm 1 can sweetened condensed milk 400 gm 3 tablespoons brown sugar 100 g butter 1 tablespoon golden syrup Pinch salt 1 bar milk cooking chocolate to melt Method Place brown sugar, butter and golden syrup in a bowl. Microwave until melted. Add in condensed milk and stir until combined. Microwave for 5 minutes stirring every 30 seconds. In a greased slice tray place down biscuits until the bottom of the tin is covered. Blend remaining biscuits in the food processor and fold into a caramel mixture. Pour the caramel mixture over the base, smooth
with a spoon and place into the fridge for 1 ½ hours or until set. While waiting, lick the bowls and utensils with your friends and family. After slice is set melt chocolate in a microwave or in a double boiler. Spread over the top and set for 30mins. Cut and enjoy with your family and loved ones. P.S. Don’t forget to sneak a piece for yourself. Emily Broadbent, Year 8 student Good Shepherd Lutheran College

Business news Tips for a virtual job interview You got an interview, congratulations! Virtual Job interviews are now commonplace. Treat them like any other interview and be prepared. Have the mental attitude that you are going to enjoy the experience. • Ensure you have the correct technology for the interview. Commonly you are sent a link which you just need to click on. • Check your computer and that the sound and video work. Headphones or earbuds are often clearer than your inbuilt microphone. Earbuds are often preferable for first impressions. • Try to position your webcam just above eye level and about 60cm away from you. If necessary, put your computer on books to get the right height. • Make sure that there are no distractions in the background that can detract the interviewer. Switch your phone off and remove any other
noisy distractions. • Try to sit next to a window or have a bright light to illuminate your face. • Sit up straight, ensure you make eye contact and don’t wave your hands at the computer… all they will see is hands. • Dress as you would for any face-to-face interview. There are short videos you can access on the net to help you. Search for ‘how do I prepare for a virtual job’ and ‘how to succeed in a virtual interview’. Jenny Brice Jennybrice.com.au

Learning about working in Eumundi
In these difficult economic times two Eumundi businesses are helping young people to learn and appreciate the responsibilities and benefits of regular employment.
Eumundi Dental and The Store have been employing a young local girl, Amali Oliver, for two shifts every week since 2019. Amali was Eumundi State School Co-Captain 2017 and is now a Year 9 student at Sunshine Beach State High. At Eumundi Dental, Amali works independently through her list of duties each Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. She has gained a greater appreciation of the complexities involved ‘behind the scenes’ for each appointment. With the encouragement of Eumundi Dental’s
Principal, Sarah Rose, she is planning to undertake a Certificate 3 in Dental Assisting, working towards a possible career in dentistry.
Co-owner Hugh Gyngell with Amali at The Store
At The Store, her people skills are of great importance as she interacts with the customers on Friday afternoons and Sunday mornings. Also emphasised is the importance of a clean and tidy workplace. She is looking forward to undertaking a barista course, with co-owner Hugh Gyngell. Amali has learnt to appreciate the independence that earning her own money has given her— and is currently saving hard for her own car. She was incredibly pleased when they asked her to return to work after both were closed during the COVID19 shut down. Pam Moffat, Eumundi Rotary

Did you know? On this day, 13 August International Left Handers Day is an international day observed annually to celebrate the uniqueness and differences of the left handers. The day was first observed in 1976 by Dean R Campbell, founder of Lefthanders International which recognized that left-handed people comprise seven to
ten percent of the world’s population. The day also spread awareness on issues faced by left-handers for example the importance of the special needs for left-handed children, and the likelihood for some left-handers to develop schizophrenia. There are well over 700 million left-handed people in the world with men slightly over-represented in the number compared to women.

Our heritage Revitalisation project for museum Eumundi Historical Association’s museum is closed to allow a revitalisation project to be undertaken for its Memorial Drive museum. The goal is to improve the entry appeal and usability of the facility. The front gardens will be modified with gentle pathways that encourage entry to the museum. The interiors of the building will be altered including removal of all asbestos linings to allow for climate control of the spaces which will accommodate a modern display of historic items and be usable by touring museum exhibitions. Maintenance of the building will also be carried out to ensure the preservation of the iconic main street building itself. The project leader is Brett Grimley of Ecolibrium Designs 0427 798 211.

What are you reading now?
In this age of binge streaming, it’s worth remembering the pleasure of a much quieter pastime: settling down comfortably with a good book. Regularly we’ll introduce local readers, who’ll share what they’re reading...and why you might enjoy their choices too. What are you reading now? I’ve just finished my first e-book. The library was closed because of COVID19 and I’d read everything in the house. So, it was an e-book or vacuuming. It’s a laughout-loud sort of book, called The Land Before Avocado by Richard Glover. He’s describing life in the ‘60s and ‘70s, trying to help Millennials understand what life was like back then. He answers the question ‘was it really better in the old days?’ for those with— as he calls them—dewy-eyed recall. I think his conclusion was: not really. Chapters reminisce about school milk and how using the backyard 44-gallon drum incinerator was the height of fun (before PlayStation). A chapter on migration discusses changes in our national character such as religion. He says that the 1965 Year Book Australia had no separate listing for any non-Christian group other than Hebrew, compared to today when 33 per cent are born overseas. I love the way he uses words to characterise our failed heroes as comedic, even though they’re tragic. For example, ‘There was Phar Lap, triumphant until poisoned by the punks; Captain Cook, triumphant until he was hacked to pieces by the Hawaiians; Ned Kelly, triumphant until hanged from the neck until dead; and Les Darcy, triumphant until he died from septicaemia due to some dodgy American dental work.’ He paints a picture of the ‘paying on the nevernever’ credit system and getting a certificate when the new fridge was finally paid off. Lay-by (before AfterPay) meant you left the item at the store until you found the money to pay at the counter, and someone handed over your goods. 18
Making the move to e-books was a lockdown necessity, says Dr Ruth Hickey. Where do you find your books? I get most of my books from the Cooroy Library, or the Sunshine Coast Council’s Mobile Library which parks opposite the Discover Eumundi building, or Berkelouw Books. I prefer print books, but now I’m used to e-books, I always keep one or two on my phone, for when I’m waiting at Bunnings for my husband. My sister in Perth sends me emails with ‘You must read this!’ so that’s also a good source. Do you always read the same sort of books? I don’t think I have a usual sort of book. While they are sometimes hard going, I will choose Man Booker Award books. Getting through the Hilary Mantel series about Thomas Cromwell is proving to be a real slog. I enjoy non-fiction, like Sapiens (Yuval Harari) and anything by Stephen Jay Gould. What’s next? Back in 1998 I adored the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith, so I’m going for some more light-touch humour and read more of this delightful crime series, set in Botswana. The titles are glorious: Morality for Beautiful Girls, and The Kalahari Typing School for Men. I’ve started a group on Facebook for readers who want to share. Search Eumundi Voice What are you reading now? and ask to join. www.facebook.com/ groups/704095596807954/

Notes from Verrierdale We are lucky that dedicated returned WWII soldiers built the Verrierdale hall. The hall comes alive with the Full Moon Dances, also Anzac Day with its bagpipes, choir, great breakfast, Australia Day with cane toad races, lunch and laughter. COVID19 has restricted these, but our quiet monthly Sunday Socials can still happen and conform to the rules.
Australia Day at the Verrierdale Hall
How many times have I heard in the past 40 years, ‘where’s that?’ So tucked away between Eumundi and Doonan, Verrierdale Road leads to Peregian (some call it the racetrack) and the Dirt End, Sudholz and Pryor Roads where the gnomes live, also horses, kids, families, kangaroos and if you’re lucky, koalas. Not to mention an enormous fox population.
Due to COVID19 there have been a lot more walkers on our dusty roads and awareness of the lack of visibility, the speed of vehicles and no signage. We were lucky to have our Div 9 Cr Maria Suarez visit the hall and discuss these issues recently, and we are hopeful there will be positive outcomes. Until next time… Yvonne Astill, Verrierdale Resident

At this time of COVID19 and people unable to work etc how does Council justify increasing residential rates?
Short answer there is no increase in residential rates. The minimum general rate increased by 2% and a 3.5% increase to waste management charges for a 240L wheelie bin. The Council provided a one-off $35 COVID19 rebate to properties which means a zero dollar rates increase for the majority of ratepayers on the minimum general rate; this is more than 60% of the people who pay residential rates. This rebate will be in addition to the existing on-time rates payment discount as well as the continuing pensioner rebate. The Council have also increased the community grants program from $3 million last financial year to $4.5 million. This funding will enable Council to partner and support not-for-profit groups to manage their recovery from the impacts of COVID19 and builds on the additional grants provided last financial year. From my perspective I worked hard to find a way that everyone might suffer a little so that noone should suffer a lot, it was a process of many compromises. If anyone is having difficulty with payment of rates please contact Council so that a plan can be worked out.
2
With Councillors’ discretionary funds reduced to comply with state government requirements, how will you allocate your $20,000? While it is a little disappointing to have the discretionary fund reduced in a period of great community need, I am in favour of grants that are funded from the rates charges so that they will be evaluated by a team of professionals who can make objective decisions considered equally on merit. I am also pleased that the Community Grants Program was increased by 50% this financial year. I have reviewed some of the history of the allocation of the past discretionary funds and what the money has been used for. My focus for the discretionary fund will be community groups that have a broad impact and the funds assist to make events more available and accessible. The first grant I have supported from the discretionary fund is for the Eumundi School of Rock. This is a perfect example of the type of project I will be looking for. However please contact me with your projects or events that require a little extra assistance.

Eumundi Dental is a family friendly, locally owned and operated business. We have created a friendly, relaxed, anxiety free dental environment so patients feel comfortable coming to see us. Eumundi Dental has always said that our goal as a dental clinic is for patients to feel that they are coming to see a friend whom just happens to be a dentist. This way you will always feel calm, let’s face it, who doesn’t like catching up with a friend. All of our patients are important to us. Whether you come every six months or a one off for a toothache. We want to know about you, not just about your teeth. We offer a range of dental services from preventative to surgical care at affordable prices. If you are interested in making an appointment or just asking about what dental care we can offer you, don’t hesitate to call us.

Taking local exhibitions to new heights The Butter Factory Arts Centre (BFAC) in Maple St, Cooroy, opened two new exhibitions on 8 August 2020, featuring artists from the region. Following COVID19-safe measures, three capacity sessions—with live music and refreshments—allowed guests to view the exhibition and meet some of the artists.
The Butterbox space debuts Saren Dobkin’s first Queensland solo exhibition, ‘Where there’s Smoke’. Dobkin works from her Tewantin studio after recently relocating from Melbourne. BFAC curator Alicia Sharples describes Dobkin’s work as ‘modern day expressionism with a bold use of colour and dramatic forms’ and as a response to the recent bushfires. A second exhibition in the Foyer & Creamery spaces showcases the creative diversity of Maleny, a town famous for its artistic community. The exhibition includes extraordinary painters,

Further works on display develop the subject matter of the ‘natural environment’. Sculptural artists Shannon Garson (Churchill Fellow) and Atto Zarzura include stunning three-dimensional works. Cartoonist Donald Greenfield’s autobiographical collage work and David Bongiorno’s sensitive pencil and ink nudes and figurative studies complete the exhibition. that if we the locals want to acknowledge any old or significant tree, we needed to inform Div 10 Cr David Law. There are a handful of protected trees in Buderim, Yandina and our Memorial Ficus along Memorial Drive.
How about we save heritage trees? All day yesterday I was deafened as the beautiful old Coral tree (Erythrina crista-gali or Cockscomb Coral) was chain sawed and mulched into obliteration. This old tree has stood proudly and alone in the centre of the lawn of the Anglican Church in Cook Street for all the 25 years I have lived here and then some 50 more. Having spoken to the workmen and asking if they were pruning, I was informed that their client wanted the tree gone. Quietly I said I would ring Council to find out if this was allowed as the block including the Church is heritage protected. I sadly learnt they need no permit. I also learnt
Why do our ever-extending list of exemptions override any of our protections? For example a 200 years old habitat tree is not protected because it is within three metres of a boundary. If it’s a 100 year old mango or some other tree of significance or heritage value, it’s time to shout and identify them to the right councillor to protect them before they are all gone for no good reason whatsoever. The Sunday walking group It is well known that three things can improve our health: walking as gentle exercise, being part of a social group, and getting out into nature. A new, informal group, the Sunday Walking Group is doing all three. Meeting at 8am most Sundays, the group have toured Eumundi, through the underpasses, the hills and back streets. Other walks have been out of town: along the ridge on Lone Hand Road from the CH Ball Lookout, and further afield at the beautiful Noosa Botanic Gardens. Walkers were surprised by the background to some of the less well-known places in Eumundi, for example, the old Saleyards, and the Sunken Gardens in Pacey St which have a scar tree identified by Indigenous elders, and relics as a more recent source of road building materials. As a reward, the group relax in a local café, or in a camp chair with a thermos, or as a treat they may even have scones delivered.
Photo courtesy of Alison Watts | Heading off along Lone Hand Road, members of the Sunday Walking Group enjoy the morning sunshine. Alison, a regular walker had this to say about the group: “I enjoy the walks and finding out about some of the local lesser-known spots. The friendly group of people and the varying walks makes for a pleasant Sunday morning outing. Sometimes the area chosen is one that I haven’t explored, so that adds to the fun. The walks are not difficult and the comfortable pace allows for conversation. Coffee afterwards is a bonus and bringing family members is good too.” To find out about the location of the next hourlong walk, email joycejohnuk@gmail.com. Wear comfortable, walking shoes, bring a brolly, hat, water and a few dollars for a café. For a stop out of town, bring a thermos and a camp (folding) chair in your car boot.

Staying active while working from home
It is now more than ever that businesses are encouraging people to work from home. For many there are lots of positives to this new work structure - comfortable, more relaxed working environment, dividing hours around family commitments, less travel time etc.. So, if you are working from home, how can you ensure that you incorporate some movement and look after your fitness while completing your daily work schedules? Here are some of my tips! 1. Set a timer and make sure you get up from your desk and move every 30 mins. Aim for full body mobility. Shoulder circles, hip circles, bear crawls. Add some stretches also. 2. Eat well - eating lots of carbohydrates can cause you to feel sluggish in the afternoons. 3. Set yourself a daily challenge eg: 5 x 10 squats, 2 x 10 Push ups or 3 x 5 mins of
Mon
jogging/brisk walk. 4. Be accountable to a friend - do the challenges together and check in with each other. 5. Use a balance board to stand on or fit ball to sit on at your desk so your muscles stay active as you work at your computer. 6. Try an online virtual class so you can feel like you are part of a group but can do the class from the comfort of your home then get straight on with your day! Movement makes for a more productive day and ensures the body doesn’t become tight, sore and more prone to injury. Smart pups are very smart importantly they also become a best friend, where often there were no friends. Trainers greatly appreciate the support from the Eumundi community, especially the businesses who welcome visits. The dogs have to learn to work in public, and concentrate around distractions. This socialisation is a vital part of the training journey towards becoming fully accredited assistance dogs.

One of the tasks the dogs are trained to perform is ‘Lap’, placing their head down to give and receive comfort. Kate Taylor www.smartpups.org.au
If you have been out and about in Eumundi it is likely you have seen one of the distinctive Smart Pups Assistance Dog vans. You may have seen a young pup in a red trainee jacket sitting with their trainer, taking in the excitement of children in the playground or perhaps an older dog being put through their paces on a busy market day. Smart Pups’ mission is to enrich the lives of families and children with special needs through the assistance and friendship of a Smart Pup. The assistance dogs are trained to assist children with special needs in areas such as autism, diabetes, epilepsy and mobility. Training takes place locally but dogs are placed with families across Australia. The dogs’ life-changing abilities include tracking a child who runs away, disrupting a meltdown, warning of an oncoming seizure and alerting to low blood sugar. Most

Community Gardens members (from left) Tom Kendall, Wayne Oldham, Latha Matters, Brett Grimley and Sandra Guy The Cooroy Community Gardens at 26 Emerald Street, Cooroy began in 2012 to support locals to learn about gardening and make new friends. In 2017 the gardens developed into a focus for permaculture and organic gardening, under Permaculture Noosa. Now, it’s a hands-on demonstration site and the location for working bees and special-topic club days. Sandra Guy described new developments at the gardens, “Last Sunday, Brett Grimley from Ecolibrium Designs met with Tom Kendall, Janet Millington, Latha Matters and myself to design and plan the location of a new shelter to be built within the Cooroy Community Permaculture Gardens.” The shelter and the gardens will be a beautiful,

Local recognised 50 Years in Defence Recognised by the Secretary, Department of Defence These COVID19 times have changed a lot of things and bestowing awards is just one of them. Mick was awarded his 50 Years of Service to Defence at home, handed to him by local mate Bob, a retired Navy Medic, with Air Marshal Mel Hupfeld, Chief of Air Force on the phone from Canberra. Virtually bestowing the award, the Air Marshal spoke with Mick for 45 minutes about the diversity, depth and success of the many projects he was involved with, or led, over his 50-year career. Among the highlights was his work in the Australian Navy underwater research, as Deputy Director of the Submarine Warfare Systems, Chief Engineer with the Australian Navy, his Principal Scientist role with Boeing Australia, his design for aviation into Antarctica, and working with customs, army and special forces, navy and air force, and more recently on the Australian Air Force’s innovation Plan Jericho. They discussed Mick’s current work on the Australian Navy’s Surface Combatant’s future operating concepts, capability analysis and modelling. Mick established Miltech Services in 1992, a company to develop systems for the military. Usually those projects were done in major cities, but since COVID19 has changed the way we work, possibilities are expanding. His work has shown the agility and success of remotely progressing projects and he will shortly be establishing a consortium of appropriately skilled people to utilise skills and experience in upcoming defence projects on the Coast.
