HALLOWEEN EUMUNDI STYLE

Over 200 people attended a Halloween party on 26 October at the Eumundi Community Garden. There was fun for all the family with a jumping castle, treasure hunt, face painting and costume and art competitions to decorate the spooky gardens. The free event was run by the not-for-profit organisation the JourneyMen with the support of Eumundi District Community Association (EDCA), the Rotary Club of Eumundi, Eumundi Community Gardens and the Thai Community of Sunshine Coast Assn.

Will McIntyre, the founder and inspiration behind the JourneyMen was encouraged by the large turnout. “The day was amazing! It was so good to see people of all ages mixing and having fun,” said Will.

“This is what the JourneyMen are all about –connecting and building community while collaborating with other organisations to achieve the same goal. We believe mental health is just a by-product of our community and together we can work to improve this.”

Movember – changing lives and challenging faces

November not only signals the heady tentative early steps into an Australian summer but trumpets the return of that rare Australian mammal – the ‘Movember Man’. From 1 November otherwise cleanly shaven and facialfur bereft individuals are suddenly propelled into a cat and mouse game with their razors as they challenge themselves to grow moustaches and change the face of men’s health, all in the name of a very worthy cause – Movember.

Movember is an annual event with funds raised to support the biggest health issues facing men: mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer. Men die on average 5yrs earlier than women and largely for preventable reasons. Males account for 75% of all suicide deaths.

This year funds raised will also go to Qld Remote Area Tracking (QRAT) – a self-funded, volunteer organisation – largely comprised of defence

force veterans who work tirelessly to relieve the suffering, misfortune and helplessness of those who are lost or are the victims of natural disaster. Funds raised will be used to purchase an equipment trailer to enable them to undertake this invaluable work.

The mighty men and women of Eumundi are banding together at the Imperial Hotel Eumundi on 1 November in the beer garden from 5-7pm to again support this worthy cause. Since 2016, a “rag tag” group of misfits from across the region have joined the fight and ditched the razor. In the process they have raised thousands of dollars.

With the support of the Imperial Hotel in Eumundi, events are organised, beers are shared, raffles and conversations started. Events include frisbee games, clay pigeon shooting, Movember Speakeasy event, “Hairy Hikes,” a drive-in movie night and a car rally. Movember packs are also available for $70 which include: a T-shirt, bag, wrist band and car sticker – and the warm and fuzzy feeling of doing good and contributing to a great cause!

Movember is not just about raising money – it’s about beginning conversations, challenging men to reach out and seek support and creating a culture where men feel safe in asking for help. Remember – it ain’t scary to be hairy!

Streetscaping works on track

The first stage of streetscaping works on Memorial Dr between the Bank Arcade building and the markets upper terrace are on schedule for completion by the end of October. Council will also complete an additional section of footpath improvements between the CWA Hall and the bus stop and remove the existing traffic islands in this area.

Construction will then move to the second section of work near the Memorial Dr/Etheridge St intersection which will run from midNovember until February 2025. Construction will cease over the busy Christmas/New Year period.

Landscaping will be undertaken as works progress. Over 1,400 new plants including 26 street trees will form part of the upgraded streetscape.

To assist with parking during construction, free temporary parking is available at the upper car park area near the roundabout, approximately 200m walk from the CWA Hall with access from

Napier Rd. The car park is open from 6am-6pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays until further notice. The car park reverts to usual parking arrangements on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays with the boom gates in operation. For more information visit: t.ly/63Dj_.

Next steps for Eumundi Community Garden

The Annual General Meeting of the Eumundi Community Garden held recently was an opportunity to look back on the success of many years of hard work in establishing a functional space for community connection, activities, events, learning and food production. The group – established and supported by Eumundi and District Community Association (EDCA) – now has most of the infrastructure initially planned in place.

Looking forward, it was agreed that food security is a crucial concern for many families. Education will be provided on how to grow anything from potted herbs to raised garden beds, right up to larger sized vegetable patches.

Jenny Abood (President), Sue Godwin (Secretary), Les Godwin (Treasurer), together with garden manager Anja Morgan, will lead the team to increase learning opportunities for locals and assist with outfitting the all-weather spaces. Informative monthly meetings will address topics that support food production in home gardens with a timetable of guest speakers and workshops to follow. The group will also work towards creating a virtual platform which will provide information on meeting times, workshops provided and a question-andanswer section.

If you would like to join the team in planning the next phase of the Eumundi Community Garden, contact Jenny at bellisbounty@gmail.com or join members every Friday afternoon from 3pm at the gardens located beside the Old Scout Hall at 20-56 Memorial Dr, Eumundi. Janet Millington

Community Connection Meeting

A range of organisations and interested parties gathered for the quarterly Eumundi Connecting Community Meeting hosted by Eumundi State School (ESS) on 24 October. Student leaders greeted guests and personally escorted them to the meeting room.

Following a welcome by school leaders Josh Campbell and Eddie Dean, Acting Principal Kelly Jeppersen shared the history of the school’s Enviro Centre. Initially established in 1994 through a collaboration between the school and community organisations, the centre features a community garden and offers an immersive, practical learning experience for all students. A video highlighted examples of integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) learning in action, as well as wellbeing activities such as yoga and cooking, using produce from the impressive gardens.

Ms Jeppersen introduced the idea of using the Wellbeing Hub for community activities on the days it is vacant. The building was established through fundraising efforts of the Eumundi community and as such it could also be utilised for activities that foster community connection and wellbeing.

The ESS P&C provided an update on the recent soccer collaboration with the Eumundi Magpies FC. Robyn Simpson also shared news about

Eumundi’s Kind Community Certification initiatives, encouraging others to nominate deserving individuals and support the welcome to community event to be held on 17 November at Dick Caplick Park.

The next meeting will be hosted by the Rotary Club of Eumundi and will be scheduled early next year with the date and venue to be confirmed.

Boomerang Bags finalist in Biosphere Awards

Boomerang Bags Noosa has been selected as a finalist in the Sustainable Business of the Year Award at this year’s Noosa Biosphere Awards.

The small group is made up of passionate volunteers who sew sustainable, reusable bags from post-consumer fabric. Using donated fabrics from individuals, unused off cuts from upholsterers and unneeded fabrics from op shops they produce around 150 reusable shopping bags each week for various Noosa shops and businesses. Printing on the bags is done in-house and nothing is wasted, even threads and offcuts are recycled to create footstools. The group also supplies bulk orders for special events.

The large Ironman 70.3 event banners are upcycled into bags to be used for next year’s event using the ribbons of unclaimed medals for handles. Bendigo Bank marquees with old branding were recycled into beach bags for their customers. Other merchandise includes cross-body bags, bags for Containers for Change bottles and cans, yoga mat bags and footstools.

Over the last 9 years, tonnes of unwanted fabrics have been diverted from landfill. Boomerang Bags don’t cost the earth!

Winners will be announced on 6 November.

Winnie-the-Pooh’s War

In 1914, Harry Colebourn – a Canadian army veterinarian – was heading to war on a troop train. At a stop in Ontario he came across a human-friendly bear cub that he bought for $20.

He named her Winnipeg – shortened to Winnie – after his hometown.

Winnie sailed to England with Harry and became the mascot of the Canadian Army Veterinarian Corps. When Harry was posted to France, he left Winnie at the London Zoo where she was renowned for her playfulness and gentleness.

One of Winnie’s fans was A A Milne’s son Christopher Robin, who changed the name of his teddy bear from Edward Bear to Winnie-thePooh. It inspired Milne to write some of the most beloved children’s stories in English literature. Rhonda Piggott

Among the red poppies for Remembrance Day will be a smattering of purple poppies to honour the faithful creatures who also served behind enemy lines, saving lives and boosting morale.

Bill was arrested twice for eating important documents and butting a superior officer. However, during the second battle of Ypres, despite being severely wounded himself, Sgt Bill saved the lives of three wounded men. He received numerous medals and commendations, survived the war and returned home with his owner. Sgt Bill’s preserved body proudly stands in Broadview Historical Museum in Saskatchewan, still wearing his military uniform.

Judy, a stray dog in Hong Kong, became the mascot of the Royal Navy vessel the HMS Gnat, before she and some of the crew transferred to HMS Grasshopper which was captured in 1941 by the Japanese. Judy was hidden from the prison camp guards by Aircraftsman Frank Williams who shared his daily rice ration with her. She was discovered when she attacked guards beating human prisoners and received her own cruel treatment.

However, the Japanese appreciated her keeping snakes, rats and even tigers away so she was officially listed as a POW. Frank was among prisoners being transferred by ship to Singapore, so he hid Judy in a rice sack until the ship was torpedoed. Over 500 men died but Frank pushed Judy out of a porthole.

Witnesses saw Judy helping non-swimmers

and wounded men to safety. Frank thought she had drowned but weeks later she reappeared, knocking him over in excitement. Her bones showed through but she and Frank survived excruciating marches through jungle laying railway tracks.

When liberated, Frank ensured Judy returned with him, smuggling her on the troop ship Antenor. For 6 weeks she lay quietly hidden. After quarantine she served alongside Frank on an Air Force base in England until her story leaked. She was awarded the Dickin Medal, the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross.

Wojtek – a bear – underwent training when his owner joined the Polish Artillery Corps, receiving rations including beer and cigarettes. In WWII he served in several battles in Italy, boosting morale and carrying ammunition and food supplies to his fellow soldiers. After the war he retired to Edinburgh Zoo where tourists adored him and many Polish army mates visited often.

NEW BUSINESS

Get hooked with Lachie

Lachie Wallis – a fourth generation Eumundi resident – discovered a love for fishing at just 3yo. At school, teachers told him to forget his passion and focus on a ‘real job’. However, Lachie mowed lawns and worked at BCF and bought his first boat – a ‘tinny’ at 14yo.

“It was my first taste of independence. I couldn’t wait to explore the waterways and learn everything I could about fishing,” said Lachie.

Assembly Point: Eumundi Amphitheatre Between Memorial Drive and Napier Road, Eumundi

One (1) minute silence will be observed at 11.00am sharp.

The Church Bell will ring across town in honour of this important commemoration.

All business owners, residents and visitors are encouraged to attend

We also encourage the community to participate in the minute silence.

LEST WE FORGET

Despite discouragement from teachers, Lachie’s family encouraged his passion, so he found work and experience on charter boats. He played indoor soccer at state level and still rides his bike daily, but fishing remained his obsession.

“I knew fishing was more than just a hobby for me. It was something I wanted to share with others,” said Lachie.

With family support he acquired a beautiful Seacat called Get Hooked and has recently launched his new business venture called Noosa Fishing Adventures. Lachie invites locals and visitors to enjoy unforgettable experiences on Noosa’s wonderful waters. His skills as a skipper and guide are already attracting excellent responses and early inquiries for Christmas parties and corporate bookings.

The boat holds a maximum of 8 passengers, including children over 8yo. Trips vary from 5-12 hours and include all equipment, soft drinks and snacks, with passengers kept busy hauling in a

huge variety of reef fish.

“Fishing is about more than just the catch. It’s about connecting with nature and each other,” Lachie said.

He hopes that by supporting his local business, booking an adventure, treating someone with a gift voucher or celebrating a special event, his adventures will foster community spirit and create lasting memories of our special waters. He wants people to know, “You can follow your dreams, no matter what obstacles you face. Every day on the water is a gift. I’m just grateful to be able to do what I love.”

With his determination and passion, Lachie Wallis is not just a fishing guide, he is an inspiration for young dreamers, proving that with hard work and resilience you can reel in your dreams.

Aged Care Reforms

Aged care in Australia will see the biggest reform in almost 30 years in 2025, with changes expected to affect both home care and residential aged care.

The Australian Government introduced the Aged Care Bill 2024 to Parliament on 12 September 2024. With support from both the Australian Government and Opposition, the Aged Care Act looks likely to make its way through parliament this year and will come into force on 1 July 2025. Those already receiving residential aged care or a home care package will be protected by a “no worse off” principle and will continue on the same level of funding and contributions.

The reforms focus on helping older Australians to remain in their own home. A new Support at Home program will replace existing Home Care packages and the Commonwealth Home Support Programme. Means-testing remains

a feature and most Australians, other than full pensioners, will pay more for aged care than they do now. The family home will continue to be largely exempt from the aged care means test.

Some details are yet to be provided, particularly around co-contribution payments and seniors’ organisations are continuing their advocacy. Most welcomed the Bill given reforms are regarded as long overdue. Margaret Walsh OAM, Acting National President of Australian Independent Retirees and a member of the Aged Care Taskforce that advised government on the reforms said, “While no one wishes to pay more, it is clear that aged care is becoming an increasing cost to the federal budget. Reforms are needed to improve the quality, accessibility, and sustainability of aged care services into the future.”

The importance of volunteers is especially evident in skills-based clubs like ours. Woodworking is not just about cutting and assembling, it involves understanding techniques, safety practices, and creative design. Ian’s workshops have become a cornerstone of our club’s activities, allowing members to gain hands-on experience in a supportive setting. His ability to simplify complex concepts makes woodworking accessible to everyone, breaking down barriers that may intimidate beginners.

2025 Year 7 Enrolments Now Open

The annual Cooroora Woodworkers Club also benefits from Ian’s contributions, as he sells slabs of wood milled at our mill and exhibits –along with other members – some of his own fine work.

As we reflect on our club’s success, it’s crucial to recognize that behind every thriving organisation are individuals who choose to give their time and talents selflessly. Ian Roberson exemplifies this spirit, reminding us that the heart of our woodworking club lies in the commitment of its members to uplift one another. Visit: cooroorawoodworkersclub.com.

Supporting young mothers

There are two races that stop the nation in November, the Melbourne Cup and the Nambour Cup.

Curious to know more?

Nambour Cup is the biggest cane toad race in the southern hemisphere and it has become an annual fundraiser to help teenage mums stay in school through the Supporting Teenagers with Education, Mothering and Mentoring (STEMM) Program.

Every Australian, no matter their circumstance, has the right to an education. The STEMM program enables this by supporting teenagers through their education while providing important mothering and mentoring skills.

This first of a kind program in Qld provides a unique stand-alone curriculum which enables pregnant girls and young mothers to be supported with their education goals. Nambour Cup will be held at the Nambour Tramfest on Saturday, 30th November from 4-7pm at the Nambour Tram Terminus.

The Majestic Theatre

Once again, the Majestic Theatre in Pomona was a very popular participant in the recent Sunshine Coast Open House weekend on 19 October.

Built in 1921, the heritage-listed theatre is Qld’s longest continually operating picture theatre. Behind-the-scenes tours allowed visitors to see the 1937 Compton organ and its 830 pipes, along

with the backstage area. The latest addition to the theatre are the lights outside the front of the building proudly proclaiming ‘MAJESTIC’.

The theatre holds a treasure trove of silent movies and is in regular use for performances of all kinds. It is a credit to the volunteers who keep everything ticking over week-by-week.

Ochre Health supports breast cancer awareness

ART ABOUT

Ladies in Black show resilience and empowerment

WWII saw women take on many traditional male roles while men were away fighting. However, peacetime saw them relegated to restricted prewar roles such as domestics, shop assistants, secretaries, nurses or teachers until they married, becoming non-working wives and mothers.

Ladies in Black – the enchanting musical coming to Noosa Arts Theatre in November – transports audiences to the 1950s when Australia saw women demanding ownership of their lives, the right to work, have a bank account, and to be treated as equal to men.

Adapted from Madeleine St John’s novel, the brilliant musical score and clever storyline follows a group of ladies working in a Sydney Department store who struggle to overcome gender, cultural, social class and other prejudices of this period, which are still felt by some today.

Ladies in Black explores diversity and cultural identity, including that of European immigrants, who despite adding so much refreshing vitality,

faced bigoted prejudice as they fought for acceptance for the diversity they brought.

The lively, jazz-infused soundtrack enhances the storyline as the audience follows the characters’ journeys and emotions.

Director Ian Mackellar said, “The music serves as a celebration of resilience – a reminder that, even in the face of adversity, there is room for joy, ambition and hope.”

Ian is the dynamic force responsible for bringing international and Australian stars to Noosa. He has directed numerous wonderful shows and his performance as Fagan in Oliver! at Noosa Arts Theatre was brilliant.

Much loved performers Cristina Rose and Brandt McRitchie have starred in many productions. Now Cristina returns to play ‘Mrs Mills’, sharing the stage with talented daughter Sienna as ‘Lisa’. With her perfect pitch voice, Sienna has been performing and delighting audiences since she was 3yo. The large cast features several fresh faces alongside Noosa favourites including Margaret Courtney – the creator of the wonderful wardrobe.

Ian said, “Ladies in Black is not merely an entertainment experience. It is an invitation to engage with history, celebrate diversity, and appreciate the resilience of women through generations. The fight for equality and recognition is ongoing, inspiring audiences to take action and advocate for themselves and others.”

Katie Noonan and Karin Schaupp

Katie Noonan and Karin Schaupp have been collaborating musically for over 20 years. In their latest album –Songs of the Southern Skies Volume 2 – they combine song and guitar to showcase their album at the Majestic Theatre in Pomona on 23 November.

Both are ARIA award winning musicians and together they won an ARIA for Songs of the Southern Skies Volume 1. Volume 2 focusses on iconic Australian women singers and songwriters and was launched on 18 October.

The performance in Pomona is an early look-in of the national tour of these two highly acclaimed musicians. Eumundi-based Katie Noonan is no stranger to readers. Karin Schaupp is Brisbanebased and has performed in the Noosa hinterland on several occasions, including when she premiered in David Williamson’s play Lotte’s Gift at Noosa Arts Theatre, which told the story of her grandmother Lotte, mother Isolde and herself.

Of the current tour Karin said, “It’s always a joy to tour a project that has had so much effort and joy poured into its recording, especially with Katie whom I have a fantastic musical and personal connection.” Tickets: themajestictheatre.com.au.

ON THIS DAY

Tim Tams turn 60

Australia’s favourite chocolate biscuit the Tim Tam turned 60yo this year. In 1958, Arnott’s long-term director Ian Norris was on the hunt for new ideas and while in the UK came across Penguin biscuits. He thought he could create something better and came up with Tim Tam. Named by Ross Arnott after the winning horse in the 1958 Kentucky Derby, Tim Tams came onto the market in 1964.

Over its 60-year history the recipe hasn’t changed much. One part of the cooking method involves holes being punched into the biscuit before baking. There are now 11 flavours and a gluten-free version.

Do Tim Tams go in the fridge or the pantry? Arnott’s advice is that it depends on what flavour you go with. Some fillings, like caramel, are better at room temperature while the classic range is better cold. One popular way of enjoying the snack is the Tim Tam slam. First reported in 1983, it involves biting the ends off a Tim Tam and dunking it in your tea or coffee and using it as a straw.

At Arnott’s bakery in Western Sydney, the Tim Tam lines run 24/7 and churns out more than 4 million biscuits each day.
