In appreciation of the amazing work done by our local fire fighters, a special event to present Christmas hampers to the volunteers from Eumundi, Belli Park and Verrierdale Brigades was held at the old Scout Hall on Sunday 13 December at 9.00am—despite the downpour of welcome rain. The Eumundi and District Community Association (EDCA) invited residents of Eumundi and close by

prime property. premier service

Kate Gyngell, from EDCA, distributed generous hampers of wine, cheese and chocolates to volunteers saying: “This event makes those important connections within our community, and shows our appreciation to our local volunteers.”

First Officer of Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade, Bob Miller expressed his thanks: “Today’s event means that the community acknowledges what we volunteers do, and lets us know we are appreciated. Our work is hot and sweaty—and we don’t just go to fires but respond to calls for downed trees and flooding. We really appreciate your thanks… but don’t expect it.” Eumundi Rotary’s chefs cooked the sausage sizzle and the Eumundi QCWA branch provided cakes and slices.

We believe in giving to our community, our clients and our colleagues.

We are honoured to have given our best in 2020 to:

• over 100 clients, who have sold and moved onto their next chapter. • over 100 buyers, who moved into their Noosa Hinterland dream • • • •

The Eumundi and District Historical Assn’s (EHA) three-hour Christmas Extravaganza was fully booked with COVID19-safe tickets snapped up quickly. Held at the Eumundi Markets car park, Memorial Dr on 11 December from 4.00pm, it promised to be fun for all the family with plenty of entertainment, market stalls and food vendors. But the weather had other ideas, and soon after the first performances the clouds decided to send a downpour, which forced the closure of the show. Juanita, visiting from Nambour said, “It was so well organised, with areas marked out, people all dressed in Christmas bling, and such a pity the rain was just too heavy, even for our umbrellas. But I’ll be back next year.” Thanks go to EDCA, QCWA, Sunshine Coast Council, the Original Eumundi Markets, Experience Eumundi, Eumundi Rotary and Dan Purdie, Member for Ninderry for supporting this free event.

Christmas lights A magnificent display of Christmas lights can be enjoyed at 1 Pickering Court Tewantin. Please make a gold coin donation which goes to Katie Rose Cottage Hospice. Stop and peek in through the windows and look for the teddy bears.

Santas for SIDS A bright simple tableaux of santas, the nativity, singing angels, and animals sit in the Riddell family’s front yard. Initially, the modest number of creations was inspired by memories of a Riddell nephew who died from SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) in 1996. Donna Riddell has led the family effort to maintain and expand the display since then. Donna says: “I make them and they make me happy.” Donna draws her Santas onto plywood from wallpaper stickers, friends’ t-shirts and family suggestions. Then pulls out the jigsaw and finally paints them in flat Disney colours. At night passers-by will see them spot-lit until 9.30pm. Visitors are welcome to drive in day or night to 37 Don Napier Road and take a closer look, make a donation to a SIDS charity, buy a Santa or ask Donna for construction instructions. HUFA (Hinterland Unite Flight Action) is an independent community action group, solely focused on driving a positive result for the flight paths over the hinterland. Recently, HUFA group reported it has received a formal request by the head of the PIR (Post Implementation Review) for ASA (Air Services Australia) to communicate directly with it on behalf of our hinterland community. ASA requested HUFA specifically as it received hundreds of PIR review submissions from HUFA followers in November. This significant development means HUFA is the recognised community representative for the hinterland, and will meet with ASA to provide feedback and recommendations for improvements to the current flight paths and processes. HUFA thanked all residents who sent in review submissions and complaints. Email to request updates: hellohufa@gmail.com.

ECCO AGM Donation presentation to Carol Raye, Chair of Katie Rose Cottage Hospice, by Olivia Dolan, President Rotary Club of Eumundi

Community support for local hospice The Rotary Club of Eumundi raised over $7500 for nursing services at Katie Rose Cottage Hospice on Friday 27 November at a fundraiser hosted at Joe’s Bar and Grill, at Joe’s Waterhole, Eumundi. The following week, President Olivia Dolan presented a cheque to Carol Raye, Chair of Katie Rose Cottage Hospice. Olivia said, “Thank you to those who generously donated items for the auctions and raffles. Thanks to those who bought the raffle tickets and placed bids on the night for some great prizes.” Whilst COVID19 restrictions placed the maximum attendance at 100, those who were able to buy tickets keenly supported the fundraising program which was a replacement for the traditional Eumundi Rotary Long Lunch cancelled in March due to the pandemic. Eumundi Olympics Perhaps in support of Brisbane’s bid, there was fierce competition between two teams at B Active’s second annual end-of-year Olympics held at the Eumundi amphitheatre last week. The red team were declared the winners after a very impressive 5-minute wall sit and a 5-minute plank. Members thanked Brooke for organising the event and keeping them motivated throughout a challenging year.

Movember 2020 is officially over for this group of Eumundi’s finest MoBro’s and MoSisters who get together—along with the Imperial Hotel, Eumundi Brewery, and Starry Nights—to raise awareness and funds for a great cause. Noosa volunteers thank you Music and songs by the SandFlys, including a rendition of Always Look on the Bright Side of Life from Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie, and a special thanks from Mayor Claire Stewart, were just part of the entertainment for Noosa Council’s appreciation event for local volunteer and charity organisations on Friday 4 December at the Noosaville Lions Park. Meals on Wheels provided morning tea; and shoulder massages and outrigger trips were enjoyed by members of Red Cross, Rural Fire Brigades, Coastguard, U3A, Lions Clubs, Noosa Arts Theatre and Queensland Koala Crusaders. A huge thank you to the Noosa Shire Council for appreciating the many volunteer organisations and individuals who make this region such a special place. Matthew Tinney and Matt Duncan of Verrierdale RFS received a donation cheque for 3 chainsaws from Carol Johnson and Warren O’Neill, Rotary Club of Cooroy.

Verrierdale Fire Brigade The Rural Fire Service (RFS) was established in Qld in 1988 and Digger Gibbons, with the help of local farmers, formed the original Verrierdale Brigade in that year. Residents raised funds to set up the brigade, which now obtains funding from donations, charges on control and stack burns, and a council levy. The Verrierdale Brigade has 29 volunteers, some volunteering for over 15 years. Because the area is hilly, fires are very difficult to extinguish. Volunteers recalled one of the worst on Litfin Rd where it burnt down to the back of the Verrierdale Hall, to Sudholz Rd. The large blaze attended at Peregian Springs last year proved the generosity and skill of volunteers who work under extreme conditions to protect our lives and properties. Fay Wiggins, Verrierdale

Historic Firies Volunteer firefighters have been supporting our communities since the days of horse and cart. Shamrock was the brave and reliable horsepower pulling Gympie’s fire-cart in 1914. The North Coast Advertiser from 12 November 1944 reported a blaze in Eumundi from Guy Fawkes Night and how water from the butter factory helped put out the fire.

A message from Vicki: “With Christmas fast approaching, it is time to reflect on the year of 2020 and all its highs and and lows. I am honoured to be No. 3 Agent in the Ray White Rural Network but more honoured to be No. 73 agent in the entire Ray White network to top off the year. 2020 may have been a challenging year all round but staying positive and dedicated to our clients and true to our process we delivered record results. I am looking forward to 2021 and offering our clients continued marketing success providing record sale prices.” We would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and all the best wishes for the New Year

New in town A new precinct at the top of town? Two separate businesses have opened this week in one of Eumundi’s iconic buildings, the Old Bakery, at the top end of the commercial area of Memorial Dr. There is rumour of a third.

Salon Eumundi With 50 years’ hairdressing experience between them, Stewart Foreman, a London-trained Vidal Sassoon and Toni & Guy hair stylist has partnered with born and bred local Ashlee Collins to create Salon Eumundi. Within days of meeting, Stew and Ash shared their dreams of creating a warm, welcoming, relaxing high-end salon where people will come to feel spoilt and pampered. As well as their love of hairdressing, the township of Eumundi including the Old Bakery building has been their inspiration. The salon has a special shampoo room, a private colour area and for the men a separate barbering section to create the ultimate salon experience. The doors open Monday to Saturday and evening appointments by arrangement.

This new real estate company in town is different for a couple of reasons. Principals David Perez and Linda Shore-Perez have been successfully selling to their luxury homes target market entirely online for 16 years. They recently returned to Eumundi and were charmed by the Old Bakery. This led the couple to establish a shop front for their real estate company to become more of a part of the Eumundi community. Making use of the spacious old building, Villa Prestige Properties has also decided to open a lifestyle store, Villa Life & Co. This will be offering antiques and homewares with an emphasis on the ‘Villa’ lifestyle. Locals and visitors are welcome to drop in for a chat about buying or selling their property or to visit the store for some inspiration.

Pottery for the Planet Clare and her partner Renton Bishopric have opened Pottery for the Planet at 77 Memorial Dr which complements their studio and warehouse in Noosaville established three years ago. Clare is no stranger to Eumundi. She set up Cinnabar Soul crystals shop at 69 Memorial Dr six years ago. Clare says, “We knew Eumundi would be a good fit for Pottery for the Planet as support for Cinnabar Soul has been great.” The couple considers it special that they can showcase both of their passions in Eumundi. “We have found Eumundi an inspiring place to work with friendly locals and lots of interesting visitors on market days.”

Jenise, Greg and their 6-year-old son Phoenix took over the herb farm in September. Spurred on by their situation during COVID19, which saw them separated in different counties, they sought a place to come together and pursue their dreams. Greg, a carpenter, and Jenise a high school science and maths teacher, have a vision for their 10 acres of land: to host workshops in yoga, health and wellness. Currently they grow and deliver herbs to restaurants and wholesalers in the Noosa hinterland. As the name Kula–an ancient Indian word meaning community– suggests, this is not the only endeavour this enterprising couple are planning. They want to create a learning hub for students based on the STEM concepts of creativity, communication, critical thinking and collaboration starting with summer camps for children during January. November was a busy month for Eumundi with 111 calls for police assistance. Police attended and arrested 3 offenders for different assault matters, executed search warrants relating to producing dangerous drugs and charged offenders in Verrierdale, Doonan and Eumundi for a range of offences including producing and possession of dangerous drugs. Eumundi Police investigated 5 fuel-drive-off stealing matters, 2 frauds, and a burglary attempt on Cash Road. A horse float was stolen in Verrierdale and a property was damaged in Ninderry. Two drink drivers were caught last month with one driver recording a 0.210 reading which is over 4 times the legal limit, and a disqualified driver was caught hooning within Eumundi township. The Road Policing unit based in Coolum has increased patrols within the division targeting drink and drug driving, speeding, seatbelt, mobile phones, and fatigue. Sixteen ‘fatal five’ tickets were issued during November. Holidays have now begun so take extra care when out enjoying yourselves with visitors to our area. Eumundi Twilight Markets A warm evening provided a perfect occasion for the ever-popular Eumundi Markets. Hungry patrons enjoyed festive fare from the food stalls, and children delighted in meeting Santa. This year the markets were only on one evening, and this proved a great success as folk came from near and far to find those perfect gifts and enjoy the beautiful setting. 14

Christmas fun

Make a Christmas star Use coloured craft sticks and make a Christmas star. Encourage children to follow your lead and use these maths terms while you are talking about each step. Do not worry about whether children understand the terms exactly… mimicking new words develops familiarity and (eventual) understanding. Suitable for 3 years+ depending on how much support you provide. Instructions: First, put one stick on the horizontal, then overlap it with another vertical one (at 90 degrees). Second, overlap two more at 45 degrees. Create a few stars, experimenting with different colours (all the same, two, four) until you have a favourite. Third, put stars on the end of each stick. Flip each stick and put stars on the ends on the other side. Fourth, repeat the sequence gluing each successive stick. Check the glue drying time. Work out when the star should be safe to lift up (use a timer to see how many minutes to wait). Glue 10cm of string to any end point to hang. Try using six craft sticks for a starburst.

Christmas brownies Ingredients • 240g unsalted butter, melted and cooled • 30ml vegetable oil • 260g white sugar • 200g packed light brown sugar • 200g roughly chopped chocolate or large chocolate chips • 4 large eggs, at room temperature • 15ml pure vanilla extract • 130g all-purpose flour

• 100g good quality, unsweetened cocoa powder • 0.75 teaspoon salt • 1 sml packet white chocolate chips • 250g of butter • 3 cups of icing sugar • green food colouring & decorations

Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 180C. 2. Lightly grease a 20x30cm baking pan with cooking oil spray. Line with baking paper. Set aside. 3. Combine melted butter, oil and sugars together in a medium-sized bowl. Whisk well to combine. Melt 180gm of chopped chocolate in microwave (reserve 20gm for batter topping) and add, together with eggs and vanilla. Beat until lighter in colour (another minute). 4. Sift in flour, cocoa powder and salt. Gently fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until just combined (do not over-beat). 5. Fold in 1 packet of white chocolate chips. 6. Pour batter into prepared pan, smoothing the top out evenly. Top with remaining chocolate pieces. 7. Bake for 25-30 minutes then let rest. 8. To make the buttercream add 250gm of butter, 3 cups of icing sugar, 2 drops of green food colouring and mix until fluffy. 9. Cut brownies into Christmas tree shapes. 10. Once cool, pipe tree lines with buttercream and add decorations. I hope everyone enjoys these treats and has a great Christmas. Emily Broadbent, Year 8

Repurpose and recycle

18

Everyone loves getting gifts at Christmas, and unwrapping them. However, children also love spending time with us, so keep a box of recyclables, and turn them into a project— not waste. Build a washing machine and dryer combo, make some decorations, or use repurposed decorations for a Christmas wreath. If they are a little wobbly, or mismatched…it does not matter. Look for the smile instead.

Photo competition Congratulations to this issue’s winner Rachel Renaud who explained: “I only moved up to the Sunny Coast earlier this year with my husband and daughter. I really enjoy photography—despite being an amateur. This shot, with my Canon 600D DSLR, is of a King Parrot that flew onto our back deck. I was pretty lucky that he allowed me to get close enough before flying away.” Our judge commented that it was well-focused and a tricky shot for a bird that does not stay still for long. To enter, email your original photo to hello@EumundiVoice.com. au. Include details such as your age, your camera, how you took the photo, location, if it was a difficult or lucky shot. Each fortnight a winning photo is chosen from entries held. The winner will receive a book voucher sponsored by Berkelouw Books Eumundi and Templeton Ginger.

Foaming trees Local Kerry Norman recently reported an unusual observation. During a storm at Mt Cooroy one afternoon she noticed a foaming waterfall coming down the trunk of a gum tree and pooling at the base. Four other large gums and one large pine were doing the same. Kerry said, “So I did what most people do and Googled it. Apparently, this phenomenon happens when it’s really dry and heavy rain comes. I was just lucky to notice as it melts quickly when the rain eases. Apparently, it improves the water holding capacity in soil around the tree. Nature really is amazing.”

The butterfly pea is a fast and easy growing perennial evergreen climber that produces beautiful pea-like flowers with a white centre throughout the year. Native to Southeast Asia the flowers produce a natural blue dye which has been used as a food and drink colouring for centuries. The most impressive quality is how the flower responds to a change in pH when lemon juice is added to butterfly pea flower tea causing a shift from deep blue to vibrant purple. The flavour of the tea is subtle and can be enhanced by the addition of crushed lemongrass stalks, ginger or mint when brewed. It can be used as a base for iced tea. Possible health benefits include improved memory, balanced mood, a healthy immune system with ingredients thought to promote vitality and healthy ageing. Hats off to Eumundi and District Community Assn for funding and supplying Christmas hampers again this year for families at Eumundi State School. A new small market Twilight up the Hill has commenced 4pm-8pm Fridays on part of the Pavilion Markets’ site at 79 Memorial Dr. Spare a Christmas wish for the estimated 400,000 seafarers who since March have been trapped on cargo ships due to border closures and international travel restrictions with no end in sight.

regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration, and a brand which you like. Most waterproof ones are sticky to the touch, so you may prefer a non-waterproof one to use daily. Read the label for instructions on how much to put on, how often, and how long it will last in water.

Sunscreen: when and how The old jingle of slip, slop and slap, has been taken to the next level of slip, slop, slap, seek and slide. Because Qld has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, new advice promotes slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat, and now, seek shade and slide on sunglasses. We know we are supposed to use sunscreen, but too many of us are not applying it often enough, or using the correct amount, so we are still at a high risk of skin cancer. How to apply? Sunscreen will only protect you if you use it correctly. Apply 20 minutes before you go outside to give it time to bind to your skin. Apply it liberally on all exposed skin, with 3ml (about a teaspoon) each to face, arms, chest front and back, legs front and back. Rub in well, so it is not rubbed off by clothes. Reapply every 2 hours, or after each swim, and wait 20 minutes before you jump back in the water. Get help to reach your back or shoulders, and make sure to apply on skin which will be exposed if your swimsuit or clothes shift. Remember you cannot see if you are being burned, because it may be 4-6 hours before the skin turns red.

The Cancer Council Q u e e n s l a n d recommends using a broad spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen labelled SPF30 or higher, as well as other forms of protection like a broad-brimmed hat, long sleeves, wraparound sunglasses and staying in the shade as often as possible. If you love your smart phone, Cancer Council Australia’s Sun Smart app gives customised information about when you do, and do not need sun protection based on your location, skin tone, and current UV levels. See www.health.qld.gov.au/news-events/ news/161125-sunsafebehaviours. Ruth Hickey, Eumundi

History

Other traditions are linked to green plants such as our Christmas fir tree, which is derived from Scandinavia and Germany where they were decorated with apples on 24 December (Feast Day of Adam and Eve) to frighten the devil. Candles were later added as a symbol of Christ as the light in the darkness. They gained popularity in the mid 1800’s when Queen Victoria’s consort, German born Prince Albert, decorated a Christmas tree with presents and candles for their children.

Christians have been celebrating the birth of Christ on 25 December since 336AD during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine, but it did not become a major Christian festival until the 9th century.

While most of us put up the tree early, traditionally for blessings on your home trees went up on 23 December and came down on Twelfth Night (6 January) the Feast of Epiphany, when the Three Kings brought their gifts to Jesus. In many countries this is when Christmas is celebrated, and gifts exchanged. Eileen Walder, Eumundi

The Christian Church adopted a period in the year that has been linked with the onset of the winter season in the northern hemisphere. The Winter Solstice celebrated that long, cold nights were behind, and warmer and longer days ahead. The Mesopotamians 4000 years ago honoured their god Marduk to fight against the monsters of chaos at the onset of each winter season. The Romans celebrated Saturnalia beginning the week before the winter solstice. Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights is celebrated by lighting a candle each night on a nine-branched candelabrum. Even the Vikings set alight a large yule log that burnt for 12 days during December.

Christmas Wishes

Sunday walks going strong The Sunday Walking Club has continued to meet most weeks for Sunday morning strolls through a variety of bushlands and towns since it was featured in Eumundi Voice Issue 1. Last week the group ventured into the sandy scrub near Weyba Downs, spotted a large goanna in a tree and stopped for a group photo. At the end, all enjoyed a cuppa in the welcome shade of the back veranda of the walk organiser. Early starts will be a feature during the warmer months.

The members of the Rotary Club of Eumundi extend our warmest season’s greetings and thanks to you, our loyal readers and supporters. We are incredibly thankful to our advertisers, graphic designer, printers, editors, distributors, writers, proof-readers, photographers and news spotters. Well over 100 volunteers have worked together to make the Eumundi Voice publication a success. With this, the 10th issue, we have printed 45,000 copies. Best wishes to you and your family this Christmas—we look forward to seeing you in the New Year. Olivia Dolan, President, Rotary Club of Eumundi
