Police Beat
Congratulation to Sgt Ryan Hanlon who has been successful in transferring to Cooroy Police Station as the Officer in Charge. Ryan has served the Eumundi Police Division well over the last 5yrs and we thank him for his service to the community. Ryan is not completely lost to Eumundi, as we are now closely working with the Cooroy Police Division to provide a better service to both communities. Ryan will always have a soft spot for Eumundi, so we know he will still be looking out for us when he is working.
The Office in Charge position is currently vacant until a suitable replacement can be found. My name is Sgt Nic Van Der Maat, and I have been fortunate enough to be positioned at Eumundi for the next 3 months as Officer in Charge. I have previously worked for the last 20yrs as General Duties Officer in Noosa Heads with a short stint from 2018-2020 at the Pomona Police Station. Although I am not a Eumundi local, I know the area well and have attended many jobs and provided after hours patrols in the area.
Ryan and the current officers at the Eumundi Police Station have been doing a great job, so I have no plans to change anything in the immediate future. However, with change comes the chance for improvements so please reach out and let us know if there are things we can do better.
As for policing during September, Eumundi Police Division had 188 calls for service ranging from traffic crashes, intruder alarms, to personal and relationship crises. As we approach the festive season, we prepare ourselves for an increase in calls for service.
Domestic incidents remained steady with 17 matters where police attended and assisted. Some of these matters were minor in nature and long gone are the days where police just locked people up. With many of these matters, those involved didn’t know where to get help, so Eumundi Police were able to assist.
It is pleasing to see that only 3 drink drivers were detected and 3 picked up for driving with a relevant drug in their system –methamphetamines, cannabis or cocaine. These 6 people will face the Noosa Magistrates Court over the next month and spend time off the road as there is a mandatory disqualification of a driver’s licence associated with these offences.
Traffic issues continue in and around Eumundi State School and Blair, Dave and Gary have been out in force since the start of school. If you are driving near the school during school times, please take a moment and slow down. These few seconds could save a life. Also remember if you are picking up your children, please use the parking available. The areas where parking is not permitted is there for a reason – again it may save a life.
Finally, I would like to remind you that October is Mental Health Month (5-13 October) which shines a spotlight on individual and community mental health. Even though this week may have passed, as a small tight community we need to look out for each other. If you or someone you know is struggling with mental ill health and do not know where to turn, please reach out to us. Although we are far from experts in this field we know where help can be found.
That’s it from us here at Eumundi Police. Stay safe and look after yourself and your loved ones.
