The Eumundi Equestrian Qld Interschool team of riders recently competed in the State Interschool Championships in Maryborough. With Brisbane hosting the 2032 Olympic Games, it is possible that these riders from Eumundi will build on their success at the championships and compete for Australia on home ground. Show Horses was the first discipline. The riders presented their ponies beautifully before they headed to the main ring in their Eumundi School equestrian uniforms. Grace Ca (Yr 2) contested both minichampion classes of Open Pony and Hunter Pony. She was nervous but excited about competing at a state level. Grace won all of her four classes and was announced as State Champion in both sections with her gorgeous small ponies.

Next was Bronte R (Yr 4) who contested the Primary Hunter Show Horse Championships with her beautiful grey pony. Not only did Bronte get the highest score in the rider class section, she also won the State Champion Primary School Hunter Horse title. Cont. p3

Cont. from p1 Finally, Rubi G (Yr 3) entered the ring on her stunning little chestnut pony in the Primary Hunter Show Horse Championships. Rubi rode beautifully to gain second place in the state for her riding and achieved fourth place overall, making the Qld team. Eumundi State School won three of the four sections in the Primary School division to become the Champion State Show Horse Primary School team—which is an achievement considering they had the youngest team of riders. In the following days, Grace Co (Yr 4) contested some large classes in Dressage and achieved sixth overall, and fourth overall in the Novice tests.

Community Horizon Festival

Dawn Awakening (benvosproductions) Now in its sixth year, Horizon Festival, the Sunshine Coast’s premier arts and cultural celebration, is back with ten inspirational days and nights. The festival runs from Friday 27 August to Sunday 5 September and brings together local and national artists to offer vibrant, immersive and entertaining experiences for all ages. This year, taking centre stage overlooking the water at Cotton Tree Park will be a festival hub like no other: the Wonderland Spiegeltent (mirror tent). This 1920’s opulent travelling pavilion with velvet canopies and ornate stained-glass windows will host world-class cabaret, comedy, circus, dance and theatre. Deeply connected to country and community, local Gubbi Gubbi and Jinibara artists are central to this year’s festival and their program includes the much-celebrated ceremonial performance Dawn Awakening at Stumers Creek in Coolum on Sunday 5 September. Horizon Festival will operate in line with full Covid19-safe protocols with patron and artist safety a priority. See events and tickets www. horizonfestival.com.au.

Future Communities Project The Future Communities Project is a research initiative instigated by local mum, Robyn Simpson. It came about in response to social statistics that indicated an escalation in issues such as bullying, self-harm, suicide and mental illness in communities. Robyn says, “It’s a large complex problem, but if nothing changes it becomes a bigger, more costly problem for future generations. The rising numbers are a concern, and so is the trend for issues to arise in younger people. “Large government budgets are spent on suicide prevention and mental health treatment but these are not addressing the causes? By identifying the root causes and developing practical solutions that are available to parents and educators, especially during the early development years, we could help to reverse these damaging trends. “I have started a survey to raise awareness and gather parents’ points of view, so we can present the collective findings to government to start conversations to hopefully prevent these social issues in future rather than treating the problems. “The goal is to get 1000 responses. I’m appealing to parents to do the survey and share it with others who fit the criteria, which is parents with children aged 3-7 years. The more data we can gather, the more likely we’ll be able to identify areas of concern and gain support to develop practical solutions.” You can complete the survey at https://bit.ly/ ParentsToday.

Community Jimna Fire Tower heritage The commencement of refurbishment and stabilisation work on the Jimna Fire Tower (50km west of Nambour) was celebrated by an enthusiastic group Jimna Fire Tower of the tower’s most ardent supporters on 19 June. Organised by the Jimna Fire Tower Action Group (JFTAG) speakers emphasised the heritage significance of the structure, and how fortunate we are to have retained this unique part of Australian history. Father Morgan Batt travelled from his Ipswich diocese to deliver an account of his family’s

connection with the Jimna area and gave thanks to all those involved in saving the tower. The Hon Robert Skelton, State Member for Nicklin, spoke passionately about the potential of the Jimna Fire Tower as a tourism and recreational attraction, as well as the vast Jimna State Forest and adjacent Conondale National Park. He will share with the Qld Government JFTAG’s appreciation for the $1.5M funding which has allowed the restoration to begin. The occasion was highlighted by the launch of the Arthur Leis Legacy and Jimna Memorial Plot Fund, which will be used to publicly honour the pioneers of the Jimna district. Eumundi’s Gary Leis, son of legendary fire tower builder, Arthur Leis, officiated at the ceremony announcing the generous contribution of $2000 from the Eumundi & District Community Association to kick-start the fund.

Photo competition After a break for the Eumundi State School story writing competition, it’s welcome back to the popular photo competition—with the winner a stunning photo of the landmark Noosa Boathouse and the surrounding life on the river. Congratulations to this fortnight’s winner Ben Bowie. In the words of the judge, “This photo has a great composition and technically would have been difficult to capture, but it’s what the photographer has done, and we all have a story to attach to this image.” Well done Ben —enjoy choosing a book with your voucher! Please consider entering the competition, email your original photo to hello@ EumundiVoice.au Include details such as your age (if U15), your camera, a sentence or two about the photo including if it was difficult or just a lucky shot. Each fortnight a winning photo will be chosen from entries held. The winner will receive a book voucher sponsored by Berkelouw Books Eumundi and Templeton Ginger

Sunshine Coast’s submarine cable For some time, the Sunshine Coast Council has been working to introduce a new data highway that will facilitate the movement of large amounts of data. The cable is now operational and is Qld’s first direct data and telecommunications connection to global markets. The project includes the installation of a 550km undersea fibre-optic cable connecting the Sunshine Coast to the 7000km long JapanGuam-Australia South submarine cable. The cable is laid out or buried under the sea floor to connect with the cable landing station adjacent to the new Maroochydore city centre. Introducing such a capability needs management and protection. To that end the Sunshine Coast Cyber Security Innovation Node has been established as part of a national network of nodes, with an Industry Advisory Group set up to oversee the Sunshine Coast Node. What does this mean for the Sunshine Coast? The cable provides the fastest international connection point from Qld and Eastern Australia to Asia, making the Sunshine Coast an attractive investment location for companies with large data requirements and thereby stimulating local businesses with estimates of 800 new jobs in the region as the project rolls out.

Help from the skies

Bell 241B with tsunami belly tank Tucked at the back of Cooroy is a business that has made a big contribution to our local region—McDermott’s Aviation. On 22 August it will donate its services for joy flights around Mt Cooroy and will drop a thousand numbered tennis balls at the Rotary Club of Cooroy’s Mt Cooroy Mountain Spring Festival. With precision flying, the helicopter pilot will put balls into a large bucket, for a few lucky raffle winners. McDermott Aviation is a family-run business. John McDermott started with one helicopter, after he saw one spraying a crop and thought, “I can do that.” Now after 35 years, the company operates Australia’s largest private fleet of helicopters, and aerial spraying is only part of its work. At a tour of the facility, operations manager Damien Lindsay explained to members of the Rotary Clubs of Cooroy and Eumundi that the company employs 100 staff at facilities in Cooroy, Maroochydore, Bankstown, Jandakot, PNG and New Caledonia. The fleet has 13 Bell 241B heavy lifter helicopters for firefighting, lifting and construction and assisting in disaster aid and salvage operations. This aircraft—with its underslung bucket with 3000L of water—provided water bombing to limit the damage during the Fraser Island fires.

Maintenance facility 10

When flying over populated areas it uses inhouse designed ‘Tsunami’ belly tank which can pump up 8000L/minute from dams and rivers. The Bell 204 Series is the main aircraft for high volume aerial spraying as it can manage loads up to 1200L. Modifications mean more accurate application of pesticides or fertilisers. Spray flow meters, skid mounted mirrors, onboard smoke generator to monitor wind direction, onboard differential GPS gives farmers real time plotting information as well as a print-out of the areas treated.

Damien Lindsay with Rotary Club members Staff have developed some innovative solutions to ferry supplies for disaster relief, for biosecurity programs such as fire ant eradication, and a weed eradication program at Lord Howe Island. Company pilots were involved in a search for a woman lost in a Moreton Bay boating tragedy using a AS365N2 Dauphin helicopter which can lift 2 persons. Its twin engine, and ‘fenestron’ tail rotor assembly, means it is safer and more stable for winching operations. It also uses high resolution FLIR thermal and digital imagery cameras to enhance rescue work. So, next time you see a blue and yellow helicopter involved in a rescue mission or fighting a fire—or dropping tennis balls—see if it is McDermott’s, Cooroy. Ruth Hickey

NAIDOC reflections During NAIDOC week at ceremonies in Nambour and Cooroy, people shared their stories: “We need to triage our country’s healing across all levels of government, and cultural nations in Australia. Ill-health is not just physical disease but a manifestation of the spiritual and emotional alienation of land, family, culture. As indigenous people we are not visitors on this land; we are the cultural and traditional owners.” Elder Judith Shay “My great, great grandmother Susan Andy was born on the banks of the Mooloola River in 1852. Before white colonists came there were about 10,000 Kabi Kabi/Gubbi Gubbi people and after white colonisation only 25 women were recorded as left on country. She married a South Sea Islander Charlie Chilli who was in a slave camp. They had three sons who were great stockmen. Around 1914 under the Removalist Act she and her sons were taken to Taroom to work on the stations (about 500 kms NW of Eumundi). Tom Petrie who used to own her sons wrote asking for my great grandfather’s return so he got to come back to country.” Ezekiel Davis, Gubbi Gubbi “NAIDOC means a big celebration where culture, history and families come together and connect with country so that we and future generations are strengthened. We need Mother Earth to be happy.” Jacqueline Sandy, dancer with the Gubbi Gubbi dance group. “Heal Country means giving back to the earth:

working for her, with her, not against her.” Josh Jones-Rew, Bundjalung “For the last couple of hundred years the country’s been doing nothing but the opposite of healing. This is an opportunity for indigenous and non-indigenous people to come together and share our ideas on healing country and move forward to act.” Jason Briggs, Yorta Yorta Wongeral “Heal country means to me for our mob to be the custodians of country. With climate change upon us, we’re the oldest surviving culture and this week shows how long our songlines and our traditions have been going and how long they are going to keep going.” Tamika Sadler “Growing up I never knew anything about my culture but NAIDOC means coming together and learning about it.” Aliya, Kamilaroi

also highlighted that it was not just younger generations embracing the digital age. Older consumers are also rapidly adopting the digital channels in a bid to “catch up with their younger peers”. According to the research the proportion of consumers aged 45-54 using a mobile banking app increased from 45% in March 2019 to 59% in September 2020. Councillor Div 10 - Cr David Law Allan Templeton Park Works are now underway for improvements to this popular park in front of Eumundi Showgrounds. I’m pleased to share that this project includes: the removal of the steel and timber shelter, shelter furniture and associated water tank; removal of the dead tree behind the shelter and the timber bollards along the park access way; installation of a new picnic setting on the existing concrete slab, which will be pressure cleaned and receive minor patching; relocation of the existing waste bin; planting three new trees and turfing of the area exposed by the demolition works and renovating the current gravel parking site. The works should take about three weeks to complete. Supporting local artisans I recently attended the gallery opening of Apma - desert ocean fabric art and accessories at Eumundi Village. Land for Wildlife: Think global, act local

Aerial view 2020

Land for Wildlife (LFW) is a voluntary conservation program that supports participants to protect, enhance and rehabilitate native flora and fauna on their property in local council areas across Australia. In SE Queensland over 4500 properties were registered in 2019, protecting almost 64000 hectares of native habitat. About 200 participants join annually. See www.lfwseq.org. au/. This year I joined, previously unaware that even a small acreage can be involved. One hectare or more of existing native vegetation is needed, or participants can commit to revegetating at least one hectare.

workshops, wildlife cameras, seedlings, nest boxes and ongoing support are available. Many native plants and animals only occur on private land, so private landholders are entrusted with their survival. LFW helps landholders identify these unique, and often threatened species and gives advice on how to help manage them. LFW officers’ support for expanding natural habitat and biodiversity represents local councils’ Environment Levy in action. Land for Wildlife defines biodiversity as “the variety of all lifeforms—the plants, animals and

As a new LFW participant I was visited by an experienced council officer who surveyed plant species, shared weed control strategies, gave management advice, all supported by written material and LFW signage. One local LFW advocate explained that by “just leaving the creek alone, apart from removing some of the accessible weeds, we were able to create a long corridor of undisturbed land… which proved perfect for our platypus, king parrots and marsupials. I am thrilled that the morning bird noise is proof of the success of our little bit of Land for Wildlife.” For more information, search Noosa or SCC Land for Wildlife. Frances Zirkler micro-organisms, the genes they contain, and the ecosystems they form.” Biodiversity and healthy ecosystems work together. When an ecosystem changes from its natural original state, the biodiversity value is altered. For example, if the water quality in a creek goes down, aquatic plants don’t grow so well, insect habitat shrinks, dependent frog and bird populations decrease and the health of the whole ecosystem declines. There are several ways to encourage a healthy ecosystem on large acreage or in smaller gardens. One is to encourage natural regeneration of the existing seed bank or revegetate by planting local species. Also, connect areas of vegetation to create corridors for wildlife to move safely across the landscape. Keep some areas messy by allowing fallen trees, sprawling vines and grasses to become habitat and reduce erosion. Finally, make sure to protect old trees. They take many years to develop— and alive or dead they are homes for wildlife. Remember that trees planted today will be unlikely to form hollows in our lifetime. Courtesy Glenda Thomas

Give Me 5 appeal

The generosity of many Sunshine Coast communities was evident behind the 92.7 Mix FM Radio Station’s Give Me 5 appeal yearly fundraiser. Raising a remarkable $531,033 to support sick kids on the Sunshine Coast, this year’s proceeds will specifically be aimed to enhance services for newborns and pregnant mothers, as well as distractive resources and an interactive play area for children undergoing day surgery. Every year all funds raised go to the notfor-profit Wishlist which directs these proceeds towards vital equipment, education and services required for our local children’s ward, paediatric, critical care unit, emergency and outpatient departments. Funds raised in 2021 will also establish Resilient

Parent Support Groups and Youth Advisory Groups, that will eventually form part of the activities of Wishlist Centre, an accommodation and patient support centre to open next year opposite the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

Fundraising for Zara Grace Simmons Cooroy’s Zara Grace Simmons was born on 25 June with congenital acute myeloid leukaemia. Zara will require treatment that will most likely be both chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant possibly from older sister Charlotte. Zara will be in hospital for the next six months. In the past week, we have sold three local homes, all over the asking price. One was listed in Doonan at Offers over $875,00 and had eight written offers presented, one of which was accepted. The successful buyer was local. Interesting enough, none of the eight buyers would have been unable to bid at auction for varying reasons.

The second was listed at just under $2m in Eumundi and sold to an interstate buyer who flew up for the weekend. The third, at just under $2m in Doonan, ‘sold off market’ to a buyer that divides his time between Interstate and the Sunshine Coast.

Gardens

Volunteers busy at a recent working bee

Eumundi Community Garden Watch this space – 38 Memorial Dr, Eumundi will soon be changing. You likely have driven past this spot many times when there was signage for the old Scout Hall and for Playgroup but now Eumundi’s community garden is clearly emerging. The project has been a work in progress involving the Eumundi and District Community Assn (EDCA) and a dedicated band of hardworking volunteers who have been planning and raising funds.

20

Recently EDCA generously allocated $50,000 to the project allowing construction to start. The plan has been designed under the watchful eye of community garden guru Bruce Molloy who will co-ordinate the progress of the project. There are many aspects to the garden for young and old: a herb garden, a sensory garden, a section of rented raised bed allotments for interested community persons, a pizza oven, bee keeping, as well as a central hub structure to be used for education purposes and demonstrations. Interested in being a part of this fun and friendly group? You are welcome to join in. History of mahjong

WOKE: A Guide to Social Justice by Titania McGrath Titania Gethsemane McGrath (alias satirist Andrew Doyle) employs sharp social commentary in tackling hard-hitting topics including race, feminism, marriage, culture and misogyny with a voice that is largely ironic and undisputedly biting. The author is a self-described “radical intersectional poet committed to feminism, social justice and peaceful protest” and says the book is intended to guide the reader towards ‘wokeness’, a phrase currently in vogue to describe an awareness of racial injustice and social issues.

Mahjong is a tile game which is generally believed to have evolved in the Shanghai area in the mid to late 1800s. The game’s popularity quickly spread to Beijing and eventually among American expatriates. Today, communities around the world have mahjong groups and it has become very popular in Australia. In China, the game has evolved to represent peace and friendship. Inviting someone to a game of mahjong is almost synonymous with friendship. Expensive mahjong sets can be seen as a status symbol and are a source of pride among Chinese families. While it does not have to be played with money, it is common for players to gamble with small amounts. A typical mahjong game could see players bet anywhere from $1 to $15. Studies have shown that mahjong is a great game for keeping the mind sharp. It is played and enjoyed by all age groups. Check out groups in Eumundi and surrounds.

restrictions ease somewhat in Qld, outdoor activities are becoming a new way for recovery in a society now more aware of its emotional wellbeing. “Covid19 has meant many individuals have experienced some kind of awareness of their mental health in the past year,” said BlackDog Green founder Bruce Molloy. SCC Mayor, Mark Jamieson echoed Bruce’s statement, “The Covid19 pandemic has resulted in a sharp increase in demand for mental health services.”

Bruce Molloy - BlackDog Green founder

Turning the black dog green Nature nurtures. We feel a bit flat, and go to the beach. Or head off for a run in the park when down, and end up exhilarated. Go out to the garden when everything feels hopeless, and return tired but mentally refreshed. As mental health issues increase and Covid19

BlackDog Green was established with support of Sunshine Coast Council. It is community focused offering a range of fun, inclusive nature-based experiences for people of all backgrounds. Bruce explained, “We use ecopsychology to bring people and natural ecology together to help improve their mental health and emotional wellbeing. Often people with moderate or even mild anxiety or depression spend a lot of time focused on their own internal dialogue. This can lead to social isolation.

WE ARE BACK!

“Nature stills that internal dialogue. Being surrounded by nature is healing and calming, invoking curiosity and a sense of awe. Curiosity creates passion; passion gives meaning and increases interest in life.”

Bruce said that his own experiences with anxiety and honouring his brother Terry, who took his own life, led to him developing this social enterprise. “BlackDog Green is a word play on ‘the black dog’, Sir Winston Churchill’s favourite term for his depression. However, the hub sees the term as encompassing all the silent battles everyday people face.

Education Teaching & learning from home As a teacher with close to 30 years of experience, some in high schools and the majority in TAFE, I have seen many changes, including organisational changes with TAFE moving from independent campuses to large regional institutes to a single state entity. Together with these changes have been the changes to teaching with increased administration loads and greater levels of compliance. However, the most significant change occurred last year as all teaching and learning moved from the classroom to online and from my home! Previously this was discouraged if not banned! Online programs. How would my students handle the change without classroom interaction, the relationship building and teamwork that happens, the social interaction inside and outside the classroom? How would I cope working from my home? How would I manage the obvious distractions and maintain the discipline needed to support my students achieve their goals? My students are all adults who choose to come to TAFE to change career directions, access a job or promotion, or just learn new skills. They often pay a high price in terms of family dollars and life.

Interestingly I have found students to be very polite and wait their turn to ask a question. While my delivery has changed in many ways, I still teach in a way that builds engagement. I do this by asking individuals a question, seeking feedback to check understanding and using various activities. I am well set up at home with three screens, resources that can be shared with students and demonstrated to the class. I make maximum use of one screen as a whiteboard, and avoid the chat function as it can be very distracting. My classes are not recorded as this can reduce engagement. Most of my classes go for two to three hours. This requires a commitment from myself, the students and sometimes families for that time without interruptions. Most of my students have really warmed to it and stepped up to the challenges, not the least of which can be family disruptions, kids screaming or demanding attention in the background, dogs barking, visitors calling and the regular rural and regional internet challenges. It has now been twelve months of teaching online and from home, and I love it. Kas - TAFE teacher

To make online learning work, I establish clear guidelines or etiquettes with each class from the start. Everybody bar me is on mute unless a student has a question, or they are asked a question by me. I ask a lot of questions to

Noosa Beach Car Club 33rd Classic Car Show The sun was creeping over the horizon on 18 July when the early-bird drivers started to arrive at Tewantin Cricket Oval, to showcase their ‘classic’ for the annual Noosa Beach Classic Car Show. Local entries to the show were boosted by entries from far and wide locations with high car values which created an exciting, eclectic display of treasured private cars. In addition ‘classic’ motorbikes, pushbikes, scooters and modern electric bikes added much interest. Local businesses supported the show through sponsorship, trade displays and food outlets. Music from a local jazz band wafted through the oval blessed by the warm and sunny winter’s day. Kids were not forgotten as they lined up for face painting, competitions, gelato and giveaways.
