Noosa Junction’s main street Sunshine Beach Rd was transformed last Sunday into the venue for this year’s Noosa Electric Vehicle Expo. It was the fourth Expo hosted by Zero Emissions Noosa. Pilates at Cooroy In a bright and airy studio at 13 Garnet St Cooroy, Tara Hore opened YOU Pilates and Wellness studio in February creating a “safe space where people can come together, get to know each other, build community spirit and work on their body physically, mentally and emotionally”. Tara trained as a professional dancer in the UK but moved to Australia after an injury. She did pilates as rehabilitation, loved it, and became an instructor after an intensive one-year diploma. Tara moved to Cooroy three years ago, starting classes at the Cooroy Hall which have now transferred to the new studio. There are a range of styles on offer with mat classes following the traditional principles of breathing, control, concentration, and precision flow.

The Reformer classes use spring resistance to challenge and assist the body to aid in muscle development and bone density. The Reformers at the studio are from a Victorian based company Pilates Health Equipment. Low impact high energy workouts are available on the Trx suspension straps or Barre work. These workouts use the principles of posture and alignment while adding a little bit more intensity to give a full body workout. Group and private lessons as well as yoga classes are available. “It’s really important that you don’t compare yourself to your neighbour, or even compare your body to what it was the previous day. My aim is to create the movement that works for you at this stage of your life,” said Tara. Phone 0439 353 460, email: move@youpilates.com.au, or visit: www.youpilates.com.au.

Learn Italian

Isabella Dusi is holding a free community talk on the Myth of the Sicilian Mafia at South Pacific Resort in the Moana Room from 10.30am-12 noon on Thursday 30 June. It will be a fascinating look at the Mafia’s power and the assassination of Judges Falcone and Borsellino, the Mafia’s most feared enemies, on the 30th anniversary.

An Italian language conversation for beginners’ class is commencing in June in Noosaville, conducted by Isabella Dusi from 10am–12pm Wednesdays. There are just 10 places in the class which focuses on learning everyday conversational Italian, concentrating on pronunciation, stress and early grammar and verbs. There is no class fee. Donations assist with photocopying and materials.

Mafia is an adjective describing any organised crime and Sicily is where it all began. Isabella was living in Italy when Falcone and Borsellino were executed and has followed the story for many decades. Bookings email: isabelladusi039@ gmail.com. Ciao, Isabella Dusi

In July last year Isabella commenced a similar beginners’ class in Italian conversation and this class is now at advanced level. For information, class locations and bookings email: emailnisabelladusi039@gmail.com or phone 0481 192 868.

Local girls get silver medals Congratulations to Eumundi local Paul Browning and two of his daughters for their silver medals awarded in the Qld State Championships for Jiu Jitsu on 4 June.

Bloody Long Walk Five intrepid members of the Eumundi Rotary Club entered as the Eumundi Voice team in the Bloody Long Walk on Sunday 5 June to walk 35km to raise funds for research to find a cure for Mitochondrial (Mito) disease. The team raised over $2,300 and gave a huge thank you to all its supporters. The Sunshine Coast event overall raised $234,924 as part of the national campaign. The day was glorious with winter sun and hundreds of fellow walkers going from Tickle Park Coolum to the finish at Mooloolaba Surf Club. All five in the team reported on the Monday they were “well on the way to recovery”. One said, “It only hurts when I move”, and another commented, “I only feel about 80 in my hips! I am rolling along like someone who has been on a horse for a week. Maybe a bit more training next year!”

Grace (13) and Faith (11) have been doing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) since they were four years old. They are both students at Noosa District High School and train at Caza BJJ in Noosa Junction under black belt Yoshi Hasegawa from Japan. Paul gave some background to their awards. “It was Faith’s first competition and Grace’s second. They both had to fight experienced competitors and Grace had to fight somebody with 25 wins who was in the next weight category up from her. Faith told me she was really nervous but wanted to give it a try. Yoshi their trainer was very proud of them. They are planning to do a smaller competition next time – this one had hundreds of competitors and it went over two days. “The girls enjoy the fitness and friendships as they train with other kids, some of whom they have known for nine years. The club is called Caza and has produced a lot of champions – some have fought in America.” Find out more: www.afbjj.smoothcomp.com/en/event/7461.

Scone time with MOVE Cooroy’s Scone Time is a remarkable event held on the second Tuesday of every month, where Martin Duncan and his team bake dozens of scones and serve a group of happy and hungry customers at the Cooroy Hall. It has become a time to relax, socialise and catch up on the local gossip. The recent first Scone Time since Covid was celebrated with a raffle and auction for the Cancer Council. Entertainment was provided by community choir the Magic of Voice Eumundi (MOVE), led by director Jo Deguara. The choristers served up a medley of well-known Gospel favourites including When the Saints Come Marching In, a haunting Cherokee greeting Windayaho, and the four-part harmonies of Stand By The Shore. “MOVE choir meets from 4-5.30pm on Tuesdays at the Eumundi CWA Hall and new members are welcome. We are a community choir so there are no auditions, just a great group of people who love to sing and have a good time,” said Jo. Contact Jo: 0403 841 856.

Director Joe Hextall

Everything old is new again ‘Everything old is new again’ certainly applies to the Eumundi Museum which officially re-opened on 31 May after two years of major renovations and a complete curation of its collections. Originally housed and managed by local historian Hessie Lindsell in the old cane drivers’ barracks – now the market offices – it moved into the vacant former Methodist church close to the post office in 1996. Since 1976 the Eumundi and District Historical Association (EHA), originally formed as the EHS, has worked tirelessly, applied for grants and donations, and sought

professional museum and heritage advice. Three years ago it appointed Tasmanian-born Joe Hextall to oversee stage one of the restoration. Joe moved to the Sunshine Coast eight years ago after working on exhibitions at Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance. He completed his Masters of Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies before working freelance at Caboolture and for Noosa Shire Council. The museum is still being renovated with stage two including landscaping the front garden and pathways and extending the back section to join and include Wan’din’in, the gallery and meeting

space opened in 2015. There will be a military service gallery and a special place to feature the wagon built by the old local blacksmith, George Adams. After the recent re-opening, locals and tourists can move around beautifully-lit exhibits covering the Kabi Kabi proud heritage, the early settlers’ timber industry and their social life which came mainly from several town churches. Numerous objects and curios will stir memories and stories and a natural history section includes a touch screen which tests your skill in recognising local bird calls. An engrossing, continuous photographic frieze around the walls tells our story. Digitalised copies are available on request and most are found on www.eHive.com. Joe is seeking more photos especially from the 50s to the 80s as most old polaroids have yellowed. Joe explained that the museum renovation was complex. Lockdowns due to Covid allowed work – begun with conservator Melanie Fihelly – to really progress along with capital works.

These included removing asbestos, renovating, relining the walls, painting, installing the lighting system and building new display cases, all while maintaining the church’s heritage appearance as approved by a heritage architect. The beautiful stained glass arch window added a special reminder. The museum promises a “regularly changing central exhibition” including the QCWA centenary, ancient artefacts, Australia’s withdrawal from the Vietnam War… and a ‘feature creature’ which is currently a koala skull! Noosa Councillors support the campaign

Don’t bottle it up Five local Rotary clubs – Cooroy, Eumundi, Noosa, Noosa Heads and Noosa Daybreak – have joined forces in a campaign for PTSD and mental health and are registered as Rotary for Mental Health (R4MH). Launched by the Cooroy club on 16 May with an inspiring presentation by Dr Ben Isbel, more than 100 attendees learned about strategies for good health and mindfulness particularly within an ageing population. Their focus will be a ‘Don’t bottle it up’ campaign and they already have support from celebrities, politicians and sporting organisations. These include Noosa councillors who have given their strong support, Channel 7’s Rob Brough, and football codes in Noosa, the Tigers, Dolphins, Pirates and the Lions. Sandy Bolton MP said the joint drive by the Rotary clubs represents a positive direction for our community. Wide Bay MP Llew O’Brien agreed that mental health is an area of significant concern and its impacts have been magnified by Covid. The campaign is raising funds for a major event during Mental Health Week in October.

I recently attended the Top Tourism Town Awards ceremony in Brisbane and I’m pleased to say that we were not only a finalist but rated very highly by the judges. Airlie Beach took out the main award for the Small Town category (our category), Winton for the Tiny Town Category and Mount Tamborine for the Top Town category. The judges made a point of saying that the public vote determined the winner in this instance and the final winner came down to just a handful of votes! For our next entry, we need to get every visitor, family, friend and colleague to vote for our town Eumundi!

We’re very proud to be supporting the upcoming Sunshine Sounds Festival coming up 29th and 30th of July and the inclusion of our very own Eumundi School of Rock bands with $15,000 in sponsorship funding. The Eumundi and District Community Association (EDCA) is also supporting this festival with an additional $15,000 and it’s so wonderful to see two community organisations supporting this incredible music event right here at the Eumundi Showgrounds.

History

Press reports of those found dead and injured at Traveston were harrowing. One reported that a 12-month-old baby was seen crawling out of the wreckage. A rescuer picked up the child and placed him aside to await his mother but she was not found and the baby was taken to the refreshment rooms at Gympie Railway Station along with injured passengers. In all, 10 people were killed including a woman on her honeymoon who had been married the day before in Brisbane. Her husband was injured but survived. Some remarkable escapes from death came to light, including one man who was thrown through a window of the first passenger carriage and fell about 7.5m without injuries.

Traveston: The personal stories Our article on the 1925 Traveston rail disaster in Eumundi Voice issue 46 attracted some feedback from readers. One said it took her back to her childhood in Scotland where everyone knew the story of the 1879 Tay Bridge disaster when a rail bridge collapsed with tragic consequences for all on board a passenger train. Like the Traveston disaster, rescue work was hampered by the darkness of the night and lack of emergency lighting. Other readers asked for more information on our local Traveston crash. With the exception of the guard’s van and the luggage van, the whole train had crossed the bridge at 96 Mile Creek heading north before the luggage van and a passenger car left the rails around 2am. What appeared remarkable to everyone was that the final carriage, the guard’s van, stood intact on the bridge while the preceding luggage van had fallen into the creek 12m down and been smashed to matchwood. The passenger carriage immediately ahead of the luggage van was pulled off the tracks and also fell into the gully with barely a single length of timber left intact. A second passenger carriage was pulled off the rails and landed on its side beside the tracks. It was estimated there were about 50 passengers in the carriage that landed in the gully and another 40 in the carriage beside the embankment. 20

A team of ambulance men from Gympie travelled to the crash site around 3.30am and relieved the uninjured passengers who had valiantly been trying to help survivors. Local press reported the ambulance team performed magnificent work. The engine and front parts of the train were able to go on to Gympie with the injured around 6.30am. By the time a relief train arrived from Brisbane, the relief party from Gympie had practically completed the rescue and relief work. The greatest praise was for Mr Ashdown, the manager of the Gympie refreshment rooms. As a member of the railway ambulance he joined the first relief party. After working in very difficult circumstances for five hours to relieve the sufferers he went back to the refreshment rooms and provided meals for the uninjured and slightly-injured passengers of the doomed train and those from a southern-bound train that had been held up due to the crash. Councillor Div 9 - Cr Maria Suarez Grants for rural property projects From 18 July rural landowners can apply for financial assistance to complete on-ground environment projects on their private property through council’s Environment Levy funded Landholder Environment Grants. Grants of up to $15,000 are available for projects including bush regeneration, reducing sediment loss on farms, controlling environmental weeds, modifying non-boundary fencing to make it wildlife friendly, revegetating degraded areas, and establishing vegetation corridors and buffer zones. These grants help rural property owners enhance their beautiful slice of the Sunshine Coast and benefit the biodiversity of the region.

If you have a project in mind check the guidelines on council’s website to see if it meets the eligibility criteria. Priority will be given to projects with high ecological value and those which have good landowner co-contribution. The Landholder Environment Grant Guidelines are available at: www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au. Applying is a three-stage process. Step 1: Expressions of interest open 18 July and must be submitted before 22 August. Step 2: A site visit from a Council Conservation Partnerships Officer to assess the project and provide any additional guidance. Step 3: Apply online before 10 October. On this day

Before the 1920s Aboriginal rights groups boycotted Australia Day in protest against the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians. The Australian public was not very aware of the boycotts and efforts to change that struggled to gain traction. In 1935 William Cooper, founder of the Australian Aborigines’ League, drafted a petition to King George V asking for representation of Aborigines in Federal Parliament. The Australian Government thought the petition fell outside its constitutional responsibilities.

NAIDOC week Australians will celebrate NAIDOC week from 3-10 July around this year’s theme, Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! NAIDOC 2022 invites all Australians to embrace First Nations peoples’ cultural knowledge and understanding of Country as part of Australia’s national heritage and equally respect the culture and values of First Nations peoples as they do the cultures and values of all Australians. We are familiar with NAIDOC week but how many of us know its origins?

On Australia Day in 1938 protesters against the treatment of Aborigines marched through the streets of Sydney in what became known as the Day of Mourning. William Cooper led a delegation to Prime Minister Joseph Lyons with a proposed national policy for Aboriginal Australians. The petition was rejected because the Government did not hold constitutional powers in relation to Aboriginal people. Aboriginal rights groups worked towards making the Day of Mourning an annual event.

referendum (see the article on the referendum in edition 44 of Eumundi Voice). In 1974 NADOC comprised entirely Aboriginal members for the first time and in 1975 they agreed NADOC events should expand to cover an entire week.

From 1940-1955 the Day of Mourning was held annually on the Sunday before Australia Day. In 1955 it shifted to the first Sunday in July after it was decided the day should become not just about protest but also a celebration of Indigenous culture.

In 1991 NADOC expanded to acknowledge Torres Strait Islander people and culture. The Committee became known as the National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC). The name became the title for the week-long events that highlighted issues of importance to First Nations peoples. Rhonda Piggott

Major Aboriginal organisations, state and federal governments and a number of church groups supported the formation of a National Aboriginal Day Observance Committee (NADOC). In 1972 the Department of Aboriginal Affairs was established as a major outcome of the 1967

Beyond Blue is the national charity partner for Coastrek, Australia’s premier hiking challenge. On Friday 15 July thousands of trekkers will walk 60km or 30km along the stunning Sunshine Coast in teams of four with a goal of raising $1 million for Beyond Blue’s 24/7 Support Service.

The Kenilworth Quilt and Craft Circle Show’s annual exhibition with the theme Pretty in Pink attracted good crowds on both days recently. “The quality of the work was marvellous,” remarked one very appreciative visitor who goes “every year for a good dose of traditional handcrafts and creative design.”

Beyond Blue is the leading charity that supports people in Australia affected by anxiety, depression and suicide. To find out more or register as a volunteer or team, contact Fundraising events and volunteer coordinator Caitlin Dawson on 03 9810 6100 or visit: www. beyondblue.org.au.

Yurol-Ringtail Forest The Yurol-Ringtail Conservation Project is an award-winning collaboration between the local community, industry, government and First Nations Peoples. It is one of Noosa’s most significant environmental initiatives. On 17 May you could hear the forest give a collective sigh of relief with news that as part of the second phase of the conservation project – following the final harvest – ex-plantation areas would be revegetated with native species. Beginning in 2018 as a project between the Qld Government, Noosa Council and Noosa Parks Association and supported by HQPlantations it paved the way for private harvesting licences to be phased-out within the 2,400 hectares of state-owned forest between Tewantin, Cooroy, Pomona and Boreen Point. Now the state forest is to become national park which will create and conserve habitat for koalas and many other vulnerable species. Noosa Council, the State Government and Noosa Parks Association jointly funded the $3.5M investment needed to secure the land. For details visit: www.statements.qld. gov.au/statements/95156. Greenfleet has engaged Noosa and District Landcare to assist with tree propagation and planting, with the first round of plantings to commence as soon as conditions on the ground are suitable. Greenfleet Australia is a not-forprofit organisation committed to protecting the earth’s climate by restoring and planting native, biodiverse forests to capture carbon emissions. EDCA President Louis Formosa, with ECG members Sue Godwin & Anja Morgan

Eumundi Community Garden After a hectic few weeks at the Eumundi Community Garden (ECG) there are many improvements to celebrate, reports president Sue Godwin. The newly-named EDCA Pavilion (Eumundi and District Community Assn) is for the ECG to hold information sharing workshops and will be available for community groups to use. EDCA generously donated $50,000 towards the establishment of the garden and president Louis Formosa was on hand to see temporary signage installed. “It’s a space, a community education hub, and we are going to use it for ECG workshops. We already have two planned, one on setting up wicking beds and one on beekeeping run by Belinda Poole the garden’s bee manager. It could also be used for local art workshops or any other educational areas,” explained Sue. The new garden shed, put together with the aid of Eumundi Rotary, is for storage of tools and

equipment. Thanks to volunteers Gus Mackenzie and Jim (Irish) Collins for lining the shed. Also Ricatti Bros Concreting for the shed and pavilion slabs. The ECG group are always keen for new members. If you’d love a vegetable garden but don’t have a good spot, raised beds are available for community rental including fertiliser, mulch and water. Anyone in the community can come, plant their veggies, mix with like-minded people and share information. Future plans include a pizza oven for casual, community get togethers.
