For the past 35 years children at Eumundi State School (ESS) have participated in the Qld Country Women’s Association’s (CWA) International Country of Study program. The initiative began shortly after WWII when country women decided that if people from different countries knew more about each other they would be less likely to go to Coordinatedwar. by Year 5 teacher Julie Cross the children participate in art and research competitions about their country of study. Each year a different country is selected and with this year being the 100th anniversary of the CWA, Australia was the focus. Students won prizes for their graphic and written work judged at CWA Division Studentslevel.also shared their knowledge through performance. The ESS Glee Club guided by Ms Stewart developed expressive choreography to tell the story of Australians' challenges over the past 100 years. Two Year 4 students wrote and presented stories on the arrival of Captain Cook. The choir sang a multipart rendition of Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gumtree. It was a delightful morning and the audience learned some rather obscure facts about our country. Next year will be a colourful study of Trinidad and Tobago.

The Association is looking forward to exploring all possibilities that the community ownership of the land offers. If you are interested in this project or would like to become more involved with EDCA the next meeting is its AGM at the Old Scout Hall at 7pm on 12 September.

The next Swap Meetup is on Thursday 25 August – the last Thursday of the month. “We setup from 10am and the Swap starts around 10.15am. Bring along any excess produce from your garden as well as empty pots, potted plants and cuttings. Anything gardening related, even old tools, gardening books or cookbooks,” said organiser Wendy Birrell. All are welcome to attend even if you feel you have nothing to swap. You can always swap a gardening tip, a recipe or just a good story and stay for a BYO cuppa and chat.

Housing possibilities

At the August meeting of the Eumundi and District Community Association (EDCA) guest speaker James Brownsworth, principal planner of Innovative Planning Solutions, offered new approaches to the provision of housing options on land owned by EDCA at 21 Memorial Dr. This was a great opportunity for members to voice their thoughts on what type of housing options are needed in the area and James broadly outlined constraints and opportunities on the site.

Providing our children with a great start to school begins with Transition to Prep activities. Eumundi State School (ESS) provides opportunities for local families to join the transition activities for children and parents from Kindy to Prep 2023. Qld children are required to undertake Prep prior to Year 1. Prep is a full-time program from Monday to Friday during normal school hours. To be eligible for Prep children must be aged 5 years by 30 June in the year they start. Prep is the beginning of the early stage of learning which continues until Year 2. Upcoming activities include Prep orientation sessions held in October and November. Led by Prep teachers in the Prep classrooms with other Kindy kids, these sessions give children an opportunity to experience classroom learning and meet other children. Kindy parents are invited to join the 2023 PrePrep Parent Group. The group will meet once or twice a term with school leaders and explore understandings of Prep and school in general and how children can best be prepared to make a positive start to school.

One key question often asked is: “Is my child ready for school?” Parents are encouraged to talk with school leaders about any concerns and the types of support schools can offer students with specific learning needs. Skills that may assist students for positive engagement and successful learning at school include:

A great year for Eumundi CWA

Celebrating 100 years

At the recent AGM of the Eumundi CWA reelected president Janet Millington received congratulations from Barrie Adams, chair of the Original Eumundi Markets for the branch’s extraordinary work in the community. Guest speaker Wendi Rampton presented a heart-wrenching story of homeless people’s experience on the Coast and shared suggestions on avenues of assistance particularly to help keep a person’s car, when is used as a home in working order.

This month across Australia communities from the bush to the city are celebrating 100 years of service by CWA women. Being part of this celebration has given our Eumundi branch a real lift and we are steadily growing with new members and expanding our activities and Theprojects.Eumundi Historical Association and Museum Director Josef Hextall have worked on a static display at the refurbished galleries from 9 August to November. Each item gives a glimpse of the role the CWA has played in improving the lives of women and their families. “Scones, jam and social change” is a phrase that encapsulates not only what the CWA does but how it does it. The conservative radicalism is frequently not visible but it has been there from the start. Amongst other issues, women have supported women in providing restrooms close to railway stations, ensured medical support in remote areas, lobbied and got the white line on the side of roads, seatbelts in cars, helmets for bicycles and made domestic violence an issue. The NSW CWA is supporting legalised medical marijuana. Importantly the CWA has provided places for communities to meet, participate in activities, and here in Eumundi a place to start a Themarket.CWA hall is used by the community and to generate funds and its market stall inspires members to participate in making items and exploring creativity. This year it has raised thousands of dollars for welfare programs at local primary and high schools. Donations help ensure all children have lunches, uniforms, school materials and support for those who otherwise would not go to school camps or graduation ceremonies. This year the CWA supported a family affected by floods in Maryborough and sent funds to Tonga after the tsunami. It called for a town meeting to share concerns about the removal of 23 carparks in Eumundi which would adversely affect the elderly, women with young children and accessibility to the hall. Overall the ladies had fun, made friends, increased their skills and informed the community of women in Qld and the South Pacific. Janet Millington, Eumundi CWA President Eumundi CWA AGM

SuddenHealthInfant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the unexplained death of a seemingly healthy baby less than a year old, usually during sleep. In Australia 100 babies die suddenly and unexpectedly each year. Previous research has primarily been around physical and environmental factors that appear to make an infant more vulnerable to SIDS. There has been a dramatic decline in the incidence in many countries since the introduction of Back to Sleep campaigns for the prevention of SIDS. These campaigns stress that infants should be placed to sleep in a safe environment. Strategies include:

• Placing the baby on a firm surface with no soft objects or loose bedding.

A state-of-the-art genetic biobank has recently been funded by charitable organisation River’s Gift with the hope it may hold the key. It comprises DNA from 25 babies who have died from SIDS in South Australia, which will provide an opportunity to examine genetic factors that may have contributed to SIDS. Researchers at the Children’s Westmead Hospital have identified Butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) as the first biochemical marker that could potentially help detect babies at a greater risk of SIDS.

A Gympie region family devastated by the loss of their second son Matthew Blaik Hillcoat (or Matty as he was affectionately known) to SIDS at nearly four months old is committed to raising awareness for this heartbreaking loss of life. Matty was born on 16 June 2011 and was a happy, healthy little baby. However at just 16 weeks old the Hillcoat’s world was shattered when Matty died in his sleep on 8 October. This year will mark the return of Matty Hillcoat’s Truckies’ Day Out from 9am-11pm on 8 October at Gympie Showgrounds. The event is centred around the truck show and to ensure it is as action-packed as possible with a family-friendly atmosphere there will be tractor pulling, burnout truck display, vintage machinery display, chainsaw racing, wood chopping, pig racing, kids' amusement rides, DJ, street food and bar facilities. In 2019 more than 3,000 people attended and 120 trucks were on display.

Eumundi Dental is supporting the event with The Crackup Sisters – hilarious entertainers who are uniquely Australian. “Lifelong connections in the trucking industry from both sides of our family meant there was a supportive network behind us and have helped us grow the event beyond what we expected,” said Kristine, Matty’s mother. “Truck drivers are very much about mate-helping-mate and it’s probably that spirit that is the essence of our Previousshow.”

The identification of a link between risk factors and SIDS does not however prove a cause or mechanism as to why it occurs. Researchers in Australia are focusing their research on why and how SIDS occurs.

events have raised approximately $130,000 with funds going to River’s Gift charity that specialises in SIDS research and providing safe sleep education. This year, to increase their local community reach and to assist with recovery from flooding events, new not-forprofit partners are the Gympie District Show Society and Little Haven Palliative Care.

One of the brothers, Yen Nguyen, moved to the Sunshine Coast and opened three restaurants that have proved very popular with local residents. He has just opened his fourth restaurant in Tewantin at 95/3 Hilton Tce in the grounds of the Noosa Lakes Resort. Yen said he enjoys educating people about traditional Vietnamese food and that most customers frequent his restaurants for the popular Pho or Banh Mi. In the new restaurant however he will serve other traditional dishes as well including Ca Kho To, a caramelised barramundi cooked in a clay pot, and Banh Xeo, a crispy Vietnamese pancake with pork and Whatprawns.you would have spent on fuel to get to Maroochydore will go a long way to a great feed at Tewantin. The musical is based upon the 1838 novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens and students aged 8 to 12 performed all the classic songs such as Food, Glorious Food and You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket or Two to perfection. The angelic voices of characters Oliver and Nancy wowed the audience, with Fagin consuming the audience’s attention with his larger-than-life performance.

Bill Sikes was fearsome in his role playing a malicious criminal in Fagin’s gang. One audience member commented, “It was wonderful to watch as the actors bought the characters to life by fully committing to their roles”. The production highlighted the commitment and dedication of students and staff with a show that was professional, entertaining and an absolute delight to watch.

Blue Carbon Grant I was pleased to find out that SCC and its grant partners were successful in securing $2 million in funding through the Commonwealth Government’s Blue Carbon Ecosystem Restoration Grants for the Blue Heart project. Blue Carbon is carbon that is stored in marine and coastal ecosystems and includes carbon stored in the bodies of plants and animals as well as in debris and soil. As Blue Carbon ‘farming’ is a potential economic opportunity for Blue Heart private landholders, the grant funding provides a timely opportunity to demonstrate Blue Carbon restoration and its benefits. First Nations Forum Last week I had the privilege of attending the second annual First Nations Self-Determination, Representation and Wellbeing Forum at Twin Waters. The forum coincided with a significant milestone to raise awareness and protect the rights of the global First Nations population – International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples on 9 August.

23 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 6 car. This very neat property is fully fenced, and offers low maintenance living in a very desirable location. The home is open plan opening to the large covered outdoor entertaining area. All of the mod cons that you’d expect in a newish property from ducted air, walk in pantry, 2.74m ceilings, rumpus room, media, beautiful bathrooms and kitchen and double garage with internal access. The shed comes complete with car hoist and has a bathroom, so would easily convert to a work from home office or spectacular gym. Currently tenanted, and the tenants would love to remain if you’re looking for an investment opportunity or a home to purchase now and live in later on.

As detailed in the Sunshine Coast Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), Council is committed to growing a strong community and providing an encouraging and supportive framework that facilitates First Nations collaborations and partnerships on the Sunshine Coast. The RAP supports events like these and the attendance of more than 200 people shows the success of the annual forum. Thank you to all the presenters, guests and attendees. I look forward to next year’s forum and encourage you to show your support and attend! The speakers had such powerful messages to share with attendees and provided an update as to best practices and case studies. The panel discussion about the opportunities and impact of the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics was insightful and helpful. The forum provided an opportunity for First Nations’ voices to come together for collaboration and learning. It was a chance to nurture our relationships and help to build stronger and better outcomes for the future. Div 10 - Cr David Law

Cool Homes design tips include:

• Consider the location of your rooms to make the most of sunlight to illuminate and warm your home.

• Create shade and plan to include gardens and trees to protect from cold winds or provide shade in the hottest parts of the day.

• Use a compass to identify north and plan to allow for cooling in summer and warming in winter using or minimising the sun’s heat. SCC aims to become a zero-net emissions organisation and for the community to be low carbon by 2041. “The Sunshine Coast is moving towards a low carbon, energy and resource efficient way of life and it’s important to maintain and enhance the lifestyle we treasure … If you’re buying, building or renovating I encourage

Excess summer heat and cold winter nights are part of our subtropical climate and have an impact on the livability of our homes and heating and cooling costs. The tune for Yesterday came to Paul McCartney in a dream. Waking, he immediately played it on

Cannibals prodding him with sharp spears in a dream because he couldn’t solve their problems led to Elias Howe revolutionising the manufacture of clothing in 1845. He noticed the spears had a hole at their tip and realised if needles were threaded at the tip and not the bottom his problem of creating a sewing machine was solved. Chemist Dmitri Mendeleev agonised over organising chemical elements. In 1869 his dream placed them into a logical table, listing them by atomic weight. Later adaption in the modern periodic table organises elements by the number of atomic protons.

In 1996 Larry Page believed he got into college on a clerical error. Fearing he would be expelled his disturbed sleep included a dream of storing all knowledge on individual PCs. Awake, he acknowledged the impossibility but worked on the probability of saving individual links in a searchable database. Hello Google!

Recently I was with a busload of my former students and we stopped at Eumundi for fish and chips. There battering, frying and salting away was Tania, former proprietor of Eumundi Pharmacy. No, Tania isn’t devoting her life to take-aways. It was just a dream. Dreams are often premonitions or problemsolving inspirations. You might worry over something before sleeping but the next day the answer becomes clear. Your brain has rewired itself while you slept and unconsciously you dreamed a solution. Numerous inventors, scientists, novelists and musicians claim dreams led to their inspiration. Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis theories resulted from studying his own dreams and daydreams. He immediately wrote down the thoughts or pictures which came and then explored their meaning. His book The Interpretation of Dreams published in 1899 was the first time a scientific principle was applied to the subject of dreaming, bringing him international acclaim. Cows led to a teenage Einstein’s theory of relativity. He dreamed they leapt an electric fence all together, however the farmer argued they jumped one at a time. Einstein ruminated on the problem eventually realising events look different depending on where you're standing and the time it takes light to reach your eyes.

1 Sept Eumundi Voice, Issue 52 AUGUST 2022 his piano. Being assured it was original he made up lyrics about scrambled eggs until he created the moving lyrics we all love. A crazy drug induced nightmare led to a children’s author writing one of the world’s most horrific novellas. Robert Louis Stevenson’s screams caused wife Mary to wake him at which he was angry because he was enjoying watching the transformation of a mild man into a monster. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde became a world sensation. Similarly, Mary Shelley’s famous Frankenstein came to her in a Moderndream. author Stephen King fell asleep on a plane and dreamed of a woman holding a writer prisoner. Eventually she kills and skins his flesh, feeding what was left of the carcass to her pig and using writer’s human skin to bind her own copy of the novel. King wrote Misery which became a chilling movie starring Kathy Bates and James Caan. So when you go to bed make sure you keep paper and pen next to you to record that worldchanging dream before it disappears. Eileen Walder
