Katie Rose Japanese Garden

The gardens at the Katie Rose Cottage Hospice are a major feature, providing families and guests with a welcome space to spend time to reflect and appreciate their surroundings. A group of volunteers developed the concept of a Japanese Garden as a destination for the families of their guests. With the aid of grants from The Gambling Fund, Noosa Council and Healthy Towns they have been working tirelessly towards the establishment of the garden. Volunteers have added a beautifully constructed Japanese teahouse complemented by waterfalls, ponds and bridges. Still to come are bridge

balustrades, a traditional Japanese Torii gate and fish for the ponds. In keeping with the importance of the colour red in Japanese culture, a colour that represents wisdom, transformation and all that is sacred—many touches of red will be prominent within the garden. The traditional bridges offer a meditative and self-reflective experience, and whether it be physical or spiritual, are symbolic of a journey. Also new to the gardens is a gift of numerous rose bushes, many with the most beautiful scent, that have been transplanted with the assistance of a rose specialist. Pam Moffat, Volunteer

What’s on

Magpies in Yandina Yandina’s Historic House in Pioneer Road has a museum, art gallery and craft shop. It is a wellknown historic precinct, with a gracious house, and now has an added attraction: a dramatic mural with a host of brilliant black and white magpies, and a variety of local birds that inhabit the gardens surrounding the House. Completing the mural was challenging due to rain, wind, storms, swooping magpies and the heat, explained local Animal Artist Fiona Groom from her studio in Ninderry. Fiona said magpies were

her inspiration. While volunteering as Gallery Coordinator she used to watch them sitting on the fence out front of the House. The Yandina and District Historical Society Committee made a successful application for a grant from the State Government Gambling Community Benefit Fund to support Fiona’s vision of the mural, which is a celebration of local wildlife.

Pomona Railway Station Gallery Pomona Railway Station Gallery volunteers are hosting an exhibition by local artist Dom Violi in the Carriage Gallery 5-30 December. The Simple Things highlights the importance of everyday objects in our lives that we tend to overlook. Each work is painted with a refreshing naive simplicity. The official opening is Saturday 5 December 12.00pm-2.00pm. The Gallery in Station St features over 80 Noosa region artists and is the place to find a special hand-made gift or an original piece of art. Now also open Saturdays 9.00am-2:00pm. Wendy Catlin 4

RSPCA Wildlife Centre recovers The Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre at Eumundi was heavily impacted by the storm on Halloween. Several trees came down on the possum enclosures and one huge gum destroyed the bird aviaries. Thankfully, none of the animals were injured: a couple of possums even stayed in their destroyed enclosure. The focus has now turned to the clean-up. The worst affected area is only accessible by a small bridge or up a steep track making it near impossible to get the machinery in to make the area safe again. All of this has happened at the busiest time of the year. Spring is ‘trauma season’ as animals are on the move and encountering humans and vehicles. The Centre is caring for many baby birds, plus possums, koalas, reptiles and more. Volunteers are needed. Find out more 5442 8057.

Nature Photography Sam kindly photographed the vibrant cover and supporting images of The Civilised Sultan in a recent issue of Eumundi Voice. These dramatic images were full of colour and showcased Eumundi’s theatre and performers. Sam also loves to photograph nature. His image Pink Clouds is taken from the steps leading down to the beach at Noosa National Park. Sam explained, “It’s quite an iconic image for most of the Sunshine Coast. This shot was different: I set the intention to go for a shot but with no expectations. I noticed a lot of cloud cover, and I knew the clouds would pop, but the question was, how much? With the amount of cloud, I knew that a long exposure would really add something special.” Sam Goodwin, Sgoodwin Photography

National Youth Science Forum Last week, Year 11 student Lincoln Favelle shared, with the Rotary Club of Eumundi, the presentation which secured him a place in the January 2021 National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) program. NYSF is a not-for-profit organisation that runs residential programs to encourage young people in their passion for science. Lincoln described his interest in robotics and neural networks and the possibilities of herding cows using Artificial Intelligence. He highlighted his involvement with the Peregian Digital Hub where members focus on maths, programming, 3D printing and robotics. Lincoln thanked Chris Boden, the Hub Director, for his guidance and knowledge. Lincoln also works at a bio-technology company—Provectus Algae in Rene St Noosaville—with bioreactor design, using algae to produce biofuels and synthesise food flavourings. Lincoln reminded the audience that “his last job was washing dishes at the bowls club” and that he intended to apply for placement at QUT in a new course, mechatronics, investigating prosthetics and robotics.

Hinterland carols Last year’s Christmas carols were threatened by black clouds and rain, but this year the Hinterland Carols on Sunday 29 November at the Eumundi Showgrounds were the perfect way to celebrate Christmas. A COVID19-safe crowd of over 700 enjoyed an evening under the stars singing Christmas carols, with entertainment by a host of talented local performers. Organiser of Hinterland Carols at Eumundi Showgrounds, Renae Suttie said, “Sunday night was a great family night for the 700 attendees, the weather was kind, and the full moon beamed. It was pleasing to have families from near and far attend, many expressing their support for the annual event. The car parking donations raised $800 for the local fire brigades and SES.” A grass slope proved popular for cardboard-box sleds. For the younger crowd, Santa’s visit was the highlight in his red ‘sleigh’ accompanied by a beautiful Christmas pudding. Food stalls did a roaring trade with pizzas, donuts, ice cream, floss, and potato slinkys proving popular. Thanks go to sponsors: Sunshine Coast Council’s grant program, Experience Eumundi, Nicholsons Solicitors, Wythes Real Estate, Eumundi Service Station, EDCA Inc, Maggie’s Flower Crowns and Eko Consulting. Thanks also to a long list of partners.

Christmas tree If you have a small pile of bread date tags hiding in the cupboard, make a Christmas tree to hang. Encourage kids to follow your lead and use these math terms as you are chatting for each step. Do not worry about whether children understand the terms exactly…mimicking new words develops familiarity and (eventual) understanding. Instructions: First, sort the tags into colours. Then, place one at the top of the coloured card for the first row. Underneath, place two (even) for the second row, then three (odd) under that for the third row. Flip and turn the tags so they fit. Keep the midline straight, so it is symmetrical. Continue to add even and odd rows. When you have enough, put three under each other, in a column, for the trunk. Move tags around to

vary how the colours are arranged (grouped or alternating). Second, glue each tag. Check how much time for the glue to dry. Attach the stickers, one for each tag. Third, draw around the tree with ruler and pencil to make a triangle, then cut out. Glue 10cm of string, at the top of the midline so the tree will hang evenly.

First Christmas Card

Are Christmas Cards a thing of the past? Each year Christmas cards are sent around the world, but with the high cost of postage and recent trends for emailing online cards, or a goofy family photo with a covering story of “what we did this year”, how many traditional cards will be sent in 2020?

Santa Quiz (answers page 27) Q1 We all know Santa, but what are some other names? Q2 Where is Santa’s home? Q3 You know the song Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer but when was it written? Q4 How many reindeer pull Santa’s sleigh? What are their names? Q5 When is Watchnight? Q6 What year was the first Christmas on December 25 celebrated? Q7 Has Santa always worn red? Q8 If Santa had an email address, what do you think it would be? 14

The tradition dates back to 1840 in England with the arrival of Royal Mail postage stamps. It took another 30 years for the USA to adopt the idea when Louis Prang introduced cards with cherubic children and humanlike animals. In Australia, due to our seasonal difference, our Santas are often pictured wearing board shorts, surrounded by an assortment of cute native animals. Long gone are the days of rushing to the letter box, hanging the cards on the venetian blinds and counting them every day to see how many we have. Nowadays, through technology, we have the pleasure of connection with loved ones all year long. Eileen Walder

Firies

Let our firies know you appreciate their work: come and meet them and give thanks to these remarkable volunteers who support our communities with amazing acts of dedication and selflessness.

Thank you to our firies

Meet one of our fireman heroes

All residents of Eumundi and close by are invited to join in a presentation by Eumundi and District Community Association (EDCA) to honour and thank our local volunteer firies on Sunday 13 December, at the Old Scout Hall (near the pool) in Memorial Dr at 9am. EDCA will present each fireman with a beautiful Christmas hamper, as a thank you from our community. Eumundi Rotary will host a sausage sizzle—your gold coin will be donated to the local fire stations to buy supplies for volunteers. The QCWA Eumundi branch will provide sweets.

Alain Bouvier came to Australia 16 years ago from Marseille, France via French Polynesia where he worked as a resort and charter boat chef. Twelve years ago, Alain with his partner Alice, came to Eumundi. Here they found their house, and met friendly people. They took up bushwalking, beach walking, socialising and music which have become part of their lives.

From your local Fire Warden In the last week the Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade, based in Napier Rd, was called out to two ‘stack’ burns. Both were very large ‘stacks’ and both without a permit. If the brigade gets a call from Firecom, the brigade will turn out. The brigade will ask to sight your permit. If you do not have a permit, the brigade is obliged to put out the fire. If you have a pile of debris more than 2m x 2m x 2m you are required to make an application for a ‘permit to light a fire’. If your ‘stack’ is smaller than 2 cubic metres, you can feed the fire to maintain the size. Your two local Fire Wardens are here to help. Just paste Fire Warden Finder Rural Fire into Google and a map of QLD fire warden zones will appear. Zoom in to Eumundi, see the fire zones for Eumundi’s four zones and contact numbers for your wardens. Chris Strewe, Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade

Alain’s hobby of photography gradually took over from his work as a chef, and for 10 years he has worked in freelance commercial photography. Three years ago, Alain joined the Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade to ‘give back’ as a volunteer. As well as Tuesday night’s training, the brigade’s volunteers are engaged in stack burns, hazard reduction and control burns. Recently, Alain’s photography skills have led to a specialist role to photograph or video aspects of brigade incidents, to illustrate a story that might be used by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services to strengthen fire education and research. “It’s been a special experience for me in Australia as a volunteer rural fire officer, something that would never have happened in France. I have made so many new friends through the fire service,” Alain said.

New flag for our firies

On Friday 27 November, Dan Purdie, Member for Ninderry, presented Geoff Garley, Crew Leader and Bob Miller, 1st Officer, and members of the Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade with a new flag for the fire station.

To our local veterans, past and present, thank you for your service. Lest we forget. Well done to the entire community who did a great job cleaning up and getting businesses open after the severe storm event on 31 October. Council crews and residents worked hard alongside Energex and QPS to restore essential services.

Eumundi Placemaking Thank you to everyone who participated. Your feedback will be used to inform recommendations about how the streetscape can be enhanced to meet your future vision. Did you know? Ruth Fairfax The Federal Electorate of Fairfax, which includes Eumundi, Bli Bli, Yandina, Nambour, Mapleton and Kenilworth, was established in 1984. It is named after Ruth Beatrix Fairfax OBE (1878-1948) who was a founding member of the Country Women’s Association in 1922 and the first president of the Queensland Branch which began later that year. Mrs Fairfax was a feminist who gave her life to the service of women believing they were the ones who held families and communities together. She once described the CWA as “bringing happiness to many lives, usefulness to others and, above all, has taught so many of us the true meaning of ‘service’ and given us so many opportunities of expressing the meaning of it.” See www.qcwa.org.au/RuthFairfax. Turtles are back Great news for turtle lovers: community volunteers are thrilled with the recent discovery of three nests on Sunshine Coast’s beaches. Sunshine Coast Council’s TurtleCare Conservation Officer Simone Bosshard said early morning beach goers should look for tracks. Both green and loggerhead turtle nests were found. Beachside residents should limit external lighting after 8pm which can disorient turtles. a lengthy restoration process: to turn this mess into a race car. Gradually we started to see the results of our efforts. The body was tidied, followed with upgrades to brakes, suspension, steering and engine cooling. The wiring, which was pretty dodgy, was upgraded and an aftermarket engine management system installed. The interior was stripped out, and a racing seat and harness installed. We decided to paint the car as a replica of the 1985 Bathurst winning car driven by Aussie John Goss and German driver Armin Hahne. A fellow club member did the paint job, and the graphics and stickers by a talented local friend.

Restoring a V12 Jaguar XJ-S Before the Jaguar appeared in my life, I was enjoying competition with a Datsun 260Z. It was a lovely car, but the decision to sell was an easy one after destroying the engine at the Noosa Hillclimb. A friend of mine in the Noosa Beach Classic Car Club spotted a very sad-looking Jaguar V12 XJ-S. The only reason I paid any attention was that it had a manual gearbox—needed to turn it into a race car. After protracted negotiations with the owner, I was ready to take it home. It started without much trouble, so I made a silly decision to drive the thing 10km home. It only took to the first corner to discover the brakes were working only on one wheel, and a couple more corners to see steam coming from the engine compartment. It was a less than relaxing drive home. The same mate that spotted the car now found himself roped into

The finished car was taken to the skidpan at Roadcraft Gympie for a shakedown, and I was delighted at just how well our efforts had paid off. Next was a proper run at Queensland Raceways where it performed faultlessly, except for the ten-year-old road tyres, which were promptly replaced with racing rubber. The car has since competed at several sprints and hill climbs, as well as race circuits. At one event, John Goss autographed the car: that made it extra special for me. I continue to enjoy the Jaguar and will always be grateful for the generous help I received from club mates. Daryl Shaw, Noosa Beach Classic Car Club

Planning alerts service It is sometimes difficult to find out what is going on where you live. However, you can join Planning Alerts (PA) and get a free email service about development applications submitted to your local council. PA is an independent project, run by a charity, the Open Australia Foundation. PA relies on the support of volunteers and donations, which are tax-deductible. Alerts have a linked comments form so you can make a public, named submission of your views about the application, which council may consider when it decides whether to approve the application. Just last week, PA collected 5763 new applications, sent 219,080 email alerts, and forwarded on 246 new comments. To get involved, view PlanningAlerts.org.au or contact@ planningalerts.org.au.

at Kilkivan, planning what to do next. Andy now works as a popular DJ around the Coast; Claire’s smile is always beaming for Phoenix (8 yrs) and Havana (5 yrs) and those tough times are faded memories. However, after 10 years in the army and witnessing so many comrades also suffering PTSD and some committing suicide, the couple has vowed to make a difference. “I survived because the fire inside me burnt brighter than the fire around me,” Andy said. “That inner fire has ignited Invisible Injuries.” On 1 March 2021 the family will embark on a 12-month Australian Invisible Injuries tour starting in Wide Bay.

Invisible injuries Life for Andy Fermo changed, physically and mentally in 2010, when an Improvised Explosive Device blew apart a vehicle in Afghanistan. A commando on his second tour of duty, Andy suffered hearing loss and severe injuries to his shoulder, back and ankles. Medically discharged, he faced the invisible injuries of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). With wife Claire’s support, Andy worked tirelessly to regain his physical and mental health. In 2016, the family moved from NSW to Noosa, hoping the calmer lifestyle would ease the traumatic memories and to be closer to immediate family support. However, the excitement of putting a deposit on a house, commencing renovations with a delayed settlement quickly gave way with news from the Banking Royal Commission. Their dreams shattered just eight days before settlement with the announcement that military pensions were not being recognised for finance. The young family spent that Christmas homeless, camping 28

Andy has been a guest speaker for many events around the Sunshine Coast including the recent Yandina-Eumundi Remembrance Day service. By sharing their story, the couple aim to improve the well-being, mental health and lifestyle of military veterans, first responders and their families who are suffering the effects of PTSD. Their website will be a one-stop source for information, support networks, organisations, retreats, and counselling services. Their urgent need is for an affordable caravan/ motorhome to hire or borrow so they can uncover stories, meet providers, organisations, and locate activities and retreats to link people who are struggling to get the help they need. Summer tick bites Tick bites are not just a mild irritant, but potentially dangerous. Last year, 153 people attended hospital on the Sunshine Coast with tick bites. Prevention is the best defence, so wear light-coloured clothing, long-sleeved shirts and pants, and spray with DEET repellent. Bites cause redness, swelling, itching, and can trigger Mammalian Meat Allergy (MMA) and can result in anaphylactic response. Australia has the highest incidence of MMA in the world. Ticks stab you with their mouthparts, then inject saliva which can cause a severe reaction with vertigo and vomiting. Bites can lead to bacterial diseases. The eastern paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus) can cause paralysis and antitoxin is required. Australian researchers have updated their treatment advice. Do not scratch, pull it out with your fingers, burn it, put petroleum jelly, nail polish, methylated spirits or alcohol on it. These actions only agitate the tick. You can use special fine-tipped forceps to remove the tick, but this increases the risk of squeezing, which will irritate the tick to inject more saliva. Or, leave the tick alone and seek medical help. Current advice is to ‘kill the tick in place’. The Australian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy recommends freezing the tick using an aerosol ether-containing spray. Available from pharmacies, sprays rapidly kill, minimising potentially serious reactions. Then, leave the tick to fall out. Dab tiny ticks with permethrincontaining cream.
