espite the sandy beach vacations in far-off places, summer can be quite stressful: a crappy job (maybe two crappy jobs), an internship from hell, loads of summer classes or living at home with your parents and remembering why you moved out in the first place. To remedy all of that, we have syllabus week, where the free time is high and the quantity of liquor around campus is higher.
There were parties every night this week, and it’s unlikely many escaped the lure of a bar or apartment soirée. Whether you drink this weekend or decide to hardcore prepare for the new semester, finish off the laziest week of the year with something a bit classier than the frat water (a.k.a. Keystone) and Jungle Juice that is available everywhere. With that, here’s to a great syllabus weekend (and great syllabus weekend drinks).

ith the fall season in full swing, local University shops have taken notice. Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts, and Panera Bread, to name a few, have reorganized their menus to satisfy the classic taste of fall: pumpkin. Students at the University were asked to weigh in on their favorites and explain why one pumpkin treat may rival the other. For anyone looking to appease their pumpkin needs, these students have narrowed it down to the best.
Located on Fifth and Green streets, the Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte puts a fall spin on the classic latte. This fall drink consists of espresso, pumpkin-flavored syrup and steamed milk. Emily Findling, junior in LAS, said it is her go-to drink as soon as September rolls around. She said Starbucks gives just the right amount of cinnamon to compliment the pumpkin flavor without overpowering it. Not only is Starbucks serving up pumpkin-flavored drinks, but they provide a variety of pumpkin-spiced bakery items as well. Some of their most popular items include a pumpkin cheesecake croissant, pumpkin cream cheese muffin, pumpkin scone, pumpkin bread and reduced-fat pumpkin cream cheese loaf cake. For students looking to get into the fall spirit without wanting the pumpkin flavor, Starbucks also offers pumpkin-shaped sugar cookies.
For those who may prefer an alternative option, Dunkin’ Donuts, located at 607 E. Green St., also offers a pumpkin latte. However, Jensen Rafool, junior in LAS, said her favorite fall treat from Dunkin’ Donuts is their pumpkin muffi n. Rafool said the cinnamon and sugar-topped muffi n is one of her all-time favorite fall desserts. Not only are pumpkin muffi ns on Dunkin’ Donuts’ menu, but the eatery has also debuted a new pumpkin doughnut this fall season.
Rebecca Calderone, junior in Education, quenches her pumpkin craving by adding a bit of a kick to her favorite fall pumpkin drink. An avid fan of Wedge Tequila Bar & Grill, located at 415 N. Neil St in Champaign, Calderone found her new favorite fall drink just this past week. She said Wedge is now offering a pumpkin margarita for a limited time during the fall season. This fall special margarita is infused with Silver Tequila, according to Calderone, and packs a punch.
For students still searching for more pumpkin pastry options, Panera is also known for their year-round pumpkin treats. They have everything from pumpkin muffies (which is basically equivalent to a pumpkin muffi n without the bottom portion) to pumpkin bread. Tara Hill, junior in ACES, said she prefers buying her pumpkin spice latte from Panera Bread. She said their addition of caramel syrup to the top of the whipped cream makes it a sweet combination.
So where can one fi nd the freshest source of pumpkins? Curtis Apple Orchard is now open for pumpkin picking. Located on 3902 S. Duncan Road, Champaign, the Curtis Farm allows its patrons to get as close to their produce as possible. For those students who would prefer to have their pumpkin treats already made, they also offer a complete pumpkin bar at their Flying Monkey Café. For more information visit curtisorchard.com. “It’s crazy that all of those moments are in the past now and everything that we’ll say about our college football days will start with ‘Remember when.’” –Nathan Scheelhaase Remember when Nathan Scheelhaase was a freshman, redshirting his first season on campus? You probably don’t. You probably remember Juice Williams cementing his name as one of Illinois’ best ever, surpassing Kurt Kittner as Illinois’ all-time leader in yards. Remember when Scheelhaase broke
Williams’ record? You should. It happened four days ago. The fifth-year senior broke the record in his last game in an Illini uniform, a 37-34 loss to rival Northwestern at Memorial Stadium. Scheelhaase finished his career with 10,634 career yards — 8,568 passing, 2,066 rushing. He fi nished 40 yards ahead of Williams’ 10,594. There have been more losses than wins in Scheelhaase’s time as Illinois’ starting quarterback. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t moments worth remembering. Remember his first touchdown: A leaping, somersaulting score over a Northern Illinois defender on Sept. 18, 2010.

Illinois says ‘I do’ to same-sex marriage

llinois is on its way to becoming the 15th state to recognize marriage equality. On Tuesday, after a two -hour debate, the House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 10 with 61 votes. The bill was then sent to the Senate, where it was quickly passed and is expected to be signed into law by Gov. Pat Quinn. SB10, sponsored by Rep. Greg Harris, would change the definition of marriage in Illinois to an act between two people, thus allowing same-sex couples the same rights and protections currently given to married couples. Though the bill does not require religious institutions to perform same-sex marriage, some religious leaders believe it does not go far enough to protect their rights. One concern raised is that they may be forced to provide health insurance to an employee’s same-sex spouse. In a statement, President Barack Obama expressed his support of the LGBT community and Tuesday’s historic vote. “As president, I have always believed that gay and lesbian Americans should be treated fairly and equally under the law. Over time, I also came to believe that same-sex couples should be able to get married like anyone else,” he said in the statement. “So tonight, Michelle and I are overjoyed for all the committed couples in Illinois whose love will now be as legal as ours — and for their friends and family who have long wanted nothing more than to see their loved ones treated fairly and equally under the law.” Over the past year, the possibility of same-sex marriage in Illinois often seemed dim. In January, the proposal failed in a lame duck session, but the Senate later passed it on Feb. 14. At the end of spring session in May, there was no House vote, which left both sides to lobby lawmakers over the next few months. After the first week of the veto session passed without a vote last month, some

didn’t expect a resolution until next year. But SB10 received 61 votes, one more than the minimum needed to send it back to the Senate for Tuesday’s final vote. Praise has also rolled in on a more local level from Quinn, who has been a proponent of same-sex marriage in Illinois. “Illinois is a place that embraces all people and today, we are an example for the nation,” Quinn said. The governor also thanked those who made the vote possible. “I thank Rep. Greg Harris and Sen. Heather Steans, Speaker (Michael) Madigan and Senate President (John) Cullerton, the dedicated advocates who have worked day and night to get this bill to my desk, and members of the General Assembly who took a stand for equal rights,” he said. Once it is signed by Quinn, the bill will take effect on June 1, 2014. Rep. Naomi Jakobsson, D-103, co-sponsored the legislation. She rushed to Springfield from her home, where she was caring for an ill relative, because the vote was expected to be so tight and made it to the House floor shortly after the debate started. State Sen. Michael Frerichs supported the bill and praised Tuesday’s vote. “In the land of Lincoln, and to quote his famous words, ‘in order to form a more perfect union,’ I think it’s important that we join in concurring with the House and their action,” he said. “It took them awhile, but they came around on the right side of history.” Though it is uncertain when Quinn will sign the bill into law, he said the vote puts Illinois “on the right side of history.”

He came to Gregory Hall on Tuesday to talk to hundreds of attendees about his views on immigration reform and to promote his memoir, “Still Dreaming: My Journey from the Barrio to Capitol Hill.” “Barrio” means neighborhood in Spanish. Gutierrez was born in Chicago in 1953 and was raised in the Lincoln Park neighborhood. After his first year in high school, his family moved to Puerto Rico, but Gutierrez eventual-
