ANNUAL REPORT 2012

5

years of Euricse 11 February 2008

Italian President Giorgio Napolitano inaugurates Euricse ”I am convinced that you will succeed in developing this initiative in the best way possible, and I hope that the values that cooperatives represent, which are truly important values from the standpoint of ideals, social relations and moral and social cohesion, can more broadly inspire the action of our institutions. Cooperatives represent one of the highest forms of economic organization and social solidarity, and not just in Italy. It is not by chance that the cooperative has found the most solemn recognition in the constitution of the Italian Republic and a specific designation within Italian legislation”

Impact

In just five years, Euricse has managed to establish itself as a reference point for the cooperative system at an international level.

·· Euricse has entered into a programmatic agreement with the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA), on whose behalf it follows a number of projects of strategic interest, such as the World Co-operative Monitor.

·· Euricse has been involved by the Desjardins Group (the largest cooperative banking group North America) as a scientific and institutional partner for the organization of the Forum 2014, one of the world’s most important events for the cooperative system.

·· Euricse works with the ILO on statistical analyses regarding employment and participates in the Academy on Social and Solidarity Economy.

Policy

Euricse strengthens the weight of the cooperative movement within European politics by promoting important initiatives for the cooperative system.

·· Euricse is a member of GECES, a group of experts nominated by the European Commission to assist with the implementation of the Social Business Initiative.

·· Euricse works closely with cooperative associations and federations (EACB, COGECA, CECOP) on policy initiatives (e.g. CAP reform and state assistance to big businesses).

·· Euricse produced the Social Europe guide Social Economy and Social Entrepreneurship for the European Commission.

During periods of great transformation, such as the one we are currently experiencing, missions and strategies must be more frequently re-examined and adapted to new challenges. Institutions, enterprises and even individuals are often forced to revise their plans, even those made very recently, introducing significant elements of discontinuity compared to what had been anticipated.

Is this also the case for Euricse? The question is relevant because our institute, like all others, has been hit by these socio-economic, political and, ultimately, cultural changes. What’s more, as 2013 is Euricse’s fifth year of existence, the need for reflection and the opening of a new cycle of development is even more pronounced. This is the case both in regards to the members, who have played a key role in the launch phase, and to the wider group of stakeholders, which over time has become richer thanks to effective networking. The picture that emerges from reading this annual report confirms the essential elements of Euricse’s mission. Looking back five years, it is clear that it was the right decision to concentrate resources on research regarding organizations that locate their identity in cooperating, and who work on the basis of a socially focused approach to the economy. Indeed, during this span of time, both the legal forms and the very principle of cooperation and the “social economy” have spread at a global level, in practice, in the academic output and in policy initiatives. During 2012, Euricse has made a significant contribution to this spread. However, this growing interest can bring, in some cases, the risk of watering down the specific nature of these organizational forms, losing sight of references to real-world data. For this precise reason, the main change demanded of Euricse – which is, by the way, common to all organizations that generate innovation – consists in accelerating the implementation of its activities and increasing the scale of its impact, adopting even more effective ways of sharing our projects and findings with users, both in the academic and the business communities and among policy-makers. In other words, it is necessary for all our initiatives to develop more quickly and effectively, further building Euricse’s reputation as a trustworthy partner in the context of academic production, training and providing support for the creation and regeneration of cooperative enterprises and economies. However, this acceleration is not an end in itself, but a reaction to the transformations of a world that demands the introduction of systemic changes on various levels – from individual behaviour to formal regulation systems, from the use of public resources to forms of incentive – that go in the increasingly necessary direction of entrepreneurial pluralism, economic, social and environmental sustainability and recognizing the value of real assets, even if they are not physical, like human capital and networks. ANNUAL REPORT 2012

IYC 2012

2012 - Euricse’s contribution to the International Year of Cooperatives On 20 November 2012, at the UN Headquarters in New York, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon officially brought to a close the International Year of Cooperatives in the presence of delegations from many member countries and representatives from the international cooperative movement. Prospects for the future were the focus of the UNorganized day, and the institutions responsible for the most important research initiatives in 2012 were invited to contribute to the activities. Euricse, the only Italian organization present in the closing ceremony’s official programme, was one of the four bodies selected at a global level to report on the findings of its studies on the subject of cooperation. Gianluca Salvatori, Euricse’s CEO, had the task of describing the conclusions of the conference organized by Euricse in Venice in March 2012, which was attended by the leading international experts in the cooperative economy. Two projects launched by Euricse in 2012 in collaboration with the International Co-operative Alliance, Stories.coop and the World Co-operative Monitor, were also presented at the event. The invitation from the United Nations confirmed the quality of Euricse’s work and the international reputation it has gained in just a few years. Out of the New York meeting, the hope emerged that over the next decade the study of the cooperative economy can develop and consolidate further, taking an increasingly international outlook and an approach directed not just towards theory, but also the transformation of organizational and business practices.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE PROMOTING THE UNDERSTANDING OF COOPERATIVES FOR A BETTER WORLD

Promoting the Understanding of Cooperatives for a Better World, 15-16 March 2012 – Venice The conference was attended by experts who have made a widely recognized, significant and innovative contribution to interpreting the cooperative enterprise in a broad sense, and the various forms in which it is expressed in different economic and institutional contexts.

250

participants

They included some of the leading economists, economic historians and legal experts who have engaged with cooperatives or social enterprises over the past 20 years. Over 50 experts participated as speakers, moderators or discussants, and the event was attended by another 250 people. The conference papers, revised and supplemented based

on the debates generated during the conference and subsequent work by referees, were turned into 16 articles, currently in the process of being published in JEOD, the Journal of Entrepreneurial and Organizational Diversity (published by Euricse) and in the Euricse Working Paper Series, both distributed through the Social Science Research Network (SSRN). The conference’s conclusions were also summarized in the document “Promoting the Understanding of Cooperatives for a Better World”, which has already been translated into 10 languages, and whose contents have been presented during the year at many Italian and international conferences.

STORIES.COOP The Stories.coop project is a digital campaign based on the creation of an interactive website with multimedia content. The digital campaign has collected over 440 stories about cooperatives in 80 different countries, operating in a wide range of sectors. During the course of 2012, the site registered over 315,000 views and was visited by more than 89,000 users from 190 countries around the world. The database of stories offers both an introduction to the fundamental principles of the cooperative model and an exploration of the different levels and aspects of the cooperative world, as well as serving as an important resource that can be used for academic and teaching purposes.

WORLD CO-OPERATIVE MONITOR The World Co-operative Monitor (WCM) project, launched in collaboration with the ICA, involves the construction of an integrated and regularly updated database, which will allow the monitoring over time of both the economic performance and social impact of the world’s biggest cooperative organizations. The aim is to show that cooperatives can be a successful business model and make a concrete contribution to employment, economic stability and sustainable development in the countries in which they operate. During 2012, the research tools were defined and the pilot phase of data collection was completed. Subsequently, the tools were revised and strategies were identified to resolve the problems that had arisen during the first phase. The analysis of the data led to the publication of the open book “Exploring the Co-operative Economy: Explorative Report 2012”. The collaboration with ICA on this project will continue in 2013, and the research team is working on identifying data collection methods that will ensure maximum geographic coverage, particularly in Asia, Africa and Central and South America.

ANNUAL REPORT 2012

RESEARCH

Area 1 The economic and social role of cooperative and social enterprises: theoretical interpretations and empirical analyses

COORDINATOR Carlo Borzaga

OVERVIEW This research area includes all the activities aimed at improving the understanding of the specific features, advantages and limits of cooperative and social enterprises, including in relation to other entrepreneurial forms. This area is central to Euricse’s research activity, since it is both the scientific frame of reference and the starting point for all the other research areas. Since it is impossible to understand these entrepreneurial forms only on the basis of orthodox economic theories, research activities within this area are inspired by the main heterodox approaches, which have questioned the excessive emphasis attributed to self-interested motivations and to systems exclusively based on exchange (or market) and authority. This area has two main goals: first, to develop a common understanding of the cooperative and social entrepreneurial forms, empirically verified and shared by the other areas of research and, second, to investigate the reasons for the existence, advantages, limits and potential of selected forms of cooperative and social enterprises.

POLICY OUTCOMES The reputation gained by Euricse among European institutions in 2010 with the presentation of the call “From Words to Actions” (signed by over 400 European academics) led to the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Employment and Social Affairs and Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry involving Euricse researchers in the preparation of the Social Business Initiative (preparing documents and direct contributions to the draft text, implementing subsequent policy actions). As a consequence of this collaboration, Carlo Borzaga was directly involved in the GECES, a group of experts established by the European Commission for the implementation of the Social Business Initiative. Moreover, the European Commission entrusted Euricse with the production of the Social Europe guide Social Economy and Social Entrepreneurship, which was delivered in March 2013 and recently published as an official document by the Directorate-General for Employment and Social Affairs.

Area 2 size and characteristics of cooperatives and social enterprises in Italy and Europe

COORDINATOR Maurizio Carpita

OVERVIEW The main purpose of this area is to address the general lack of statistical information (recently denounced by the European Parliament) on the economic and occupational impact as well as on the performance of cooperative and social enterprises. More specifically, the area focuses on two aspects: 1. At a national level, collection and analysis of statistical data on cooperative and social enterprises, with particular reference to their economic, financial and employment characteristics; and dissemination of the research results through scientific studies and periodical reports. 2. At an international level, identification and collection of information on the largest cooperatives worldwide, with a particular focus on Europe. Two databases were set up in 2012: Data Warehouse and World Co-operative Monitor (WCM).

Area 3 The impact of cooperatives and social enterprises on economic development and on the creation of social capital

COORDINATOR Silvio Goglio

OVERVIEW This research area intends to measure the impact of cooperative and social enterprises on economic and social development, highlighting and, when possible, quantifying the consequences of their activity on economically and socially relevant contexts, with particular reference to the less investigated ones. Furthermore, the area aims at verifying to what extent cooperative and social enterprises contribute to economic development, create new and diversified employment opportunities and foster the accumulation of social capital, through theoretical and empirical research projects that favour a multidisciplinary and comparative approach. More specifically, the area aims to:

·· analyse how cooperative and social enterprises influence the spread of trust, the creation of networks of interpersonal relationships, social and individual well-being, population health status, the accumulation of human capital, social cohesion and the decrease of inequality.

·· analyse from a theoretical and empirical point of view the role and the potential of cooperative and social enterprises in fighting poverty and social exclusion.

POLICY OUTCOMES During the conference “Promoting the Understanding of Cooperatives for a Better World”, Euricse launched the “Appeal on the importance of cooperative banks for a Europe’s economy recovery and growth” (signed by over 170 experts) calling up for the application of the principle of proportionality in the regulation of cooperative banks. Many authorities responded positively to the appeal, including the European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Michel Barnier; the European Banking Authority; the European Council; the European Commission; the European Parliament; and eight heads of state or government.

Area 5 International comparisons and models of cooperatives and social enterprises

COORDINATOR Carlo Borzaga

OVERVIEW This research area is aimed at increasing knowledge on the variety of cooperative and social enterprise models in the world, with the objective of showing the flexibility of these organizational forms and fostering imitation processes through the identification, description and analysis of different models, with reference to countries characterized by diverse levels of economic development and welfare systems. To this end, an open access database of case studies has been created and will be enhanced in the future. It can be used for educational purposes and to develop policy indications at a national and international level. Through the call “Case study proposals on cooperative models worldwide”, seven case studies on cooperative models in four continents have been selected. The call on social enterprises, “Case studies on innovative social enterprise best practices in Europe”, allowed the collection of good practices from work integration social enterprises in several European and non-European countries. In 2012, the “Stories.coop” initiative was launched within the framework of this area with the aim of collecting successful stories and experiences of cooperatives worldwide and in all activity sectors.

POLICY OUTCOMES A number of organizations in the cooperative sector and government bodies have expressed their interest in the content available on Stories.coop and made requests for inclusion in publications aimed at promoting cooperatives in different geographic and thematic contexts. For example, the Division of Social Economy of the Seoul Metropolitan Government in South Korea asked Euricse if it could include some stories published on Stories.coop in a publication aimed at raising awareness among citizens about the cooperative phenomenon.

Area 6 Management and governance of cooperative and social enterprises

COORDINATOR Michele Andreaus

OVERVIEW This research area seeks to analyse the challenges that cooperative and social enterprises face as they pursue highlevel economic performance whilst remaining faithful to their values and the principles upon which they were founded, through management and accounting practices that reflect their ethics. The starting point for the projects within this area involves the rethinking of cooperative and social enterprises’ institutional objectives, which, by definition, differ from for-profit enterprises. These entrepreneurial forms can be defined as systems aimed at generating benefits for a wide range of stakeholders, not just investors. Economic equilibrium for these enterprises is not the ultimate goal, but rather a means to the achievement of ethical and social objectives. In particular, the activities undertaken within this research area focus on the following fields of study: corporate governance, management, accounting and social accounting.

PHD RESEARCH PROJECTS FUNDED BY EURICSE

Ivana Catturani (Italy) is a PhD candidate in Economics and Management at the School in Social Sciences of the University of Trento. Her PhD thesis, “Small is beautiful: is it still the case in the banking sector? The case of Italian credit cooperative banks from 2004 to 2011”, aims to outline the growth profiles of Italian credit cooperative banks in the period between 2004 (when the reorganization of the banking system was concluded, after the merging of major banks) and 2011 (a period which includes the crisis that began in 2007).

Michela Giovannini (Italy) is a PhD candidate in Local Development and Global Dynamics at the School in Social Sciences of the University of Trento. The main topic of her thesis, “The indigenous social enterprise: a possible vehicle of development for indigenous people in Central America”, is that in order to support the development of indigenous people, it is important to identify their conception of development, in addition to the factors that may strengthen their inclination to implement self-managed strategies in order to face economic, political and social needs. Giovannini’s paper received a special award (“Best paper presented by graduated students”) at the 4th International Congress of RULESCOOP, which took place in Valencia in September.

Richard Muko Ochanda (Kenya) is a PhD candidate in Local Development and Global Dynamics at the School in Social Sciences of the University of Trento. His thesis, “The analysis of third sector organizations in Kenya: evolution towards the model of social enterprise”, aims to investigate social enterprises in Kenya through the study of community organizations and self-help groups. The thesis, of a comparative nature, examines social enterprises in both industrialized and developing countries, with the purpose of identifying how the third sector contributes to socio-economic development and the improvement of local populations’ quality of life.

Jamilya Jeenbaeva (Kyrgyzstan) is a PhD candidate in Local Development and Global Dynamics at the School in Social Sciences of the University of Trento. Her research project, “Consumption and institutional change: human capital, development and climate-smart behaviour change”, focuses on the involvement of local communities in the implementation and evaluation of environmental policies. In particular, the study focuses on the possible development of a human capital specific to “climate-smart” social entrepreneurship, investigating the cognitive understanding of overconsumption and consumerism through individual and organizational social preferences and motivations to reduce the “ecological footprint”.

Samira Nuhanovic (Bosnia and Herzegovina) is a PhD candidate in Local Development and Global Dynamics at the School in Social Sciences of the University of Trento. Her thesis, “Agricultural cooperatives: towards a sustainable rural development in Bosnia and Herzegovina”, concerns the relationships between agricultural cooperatives and rural development in situations of ethnic tension. More specifically, the research aims to understand to what extent productivity levels of agricultural cooperatives in Bosnia and Herzegovina depend on inherited and rigid organizational structures stemming from the socialist system, or on newly created and adaptive organizational structures. Moreover, the research analyses the ways in which organizational structures (and consequently the productive and marketing activities of agricultural cooperatives) can be diversified while remaining coherent with cooperative principles, in order to have a positive impact on rural development in Bosnia and Herzegovina through the reduction of rural poverty.

Abate Gashaw Tadesse (Ethiopia) is a PhD candidate in Local Development and Global Dynamics at the School in Social Sciences of the University of Trento. His research project, “Cooperative approaches to rural development and poverty reduction in Ethiopia”, aims on the one hand to analyse and compare cooperative financial institutions and microfinance institutions, in regards to their capacity to guarantee financial support to small family-based agricultural enterprises in Ethiopia; and on the other to evaluate the impact of access to institutional funds on Ethiopian farmers’ productivity, depending on the financial institutions’ organizational form. In November Gashaw took part in the closing ceremony of the International Year of Cooperatives, where together with other young delegates he played a role in the drafting and presentation of the “Cooperatives and Youth: Empowerment, Employment and Engagement” declaration of young cooperators.

PHD PROJECTS IN COLLABORATION WITH EURICSE (WITH EXTERNAL FUNDING)

Michele Boglioni is a PhD candidate in Local Development and Global Dynamics at the School in Social Sciences of the University of Trento whose research project is entitled “A diagnostic approach to local development: defining development policies in the Province of Trento and in the Basque Country”. The project aims to formulate policy proposals to tackle development dynamics in the Province of Trento and in the Basque Country, on the basis of a diagnostic approach developed in recent years at a macroeconomic/ national level, and adapted to a local context.

Eddi Fontanari is a PhD candidate in Economics of Production and Development at the University of Insubria, Varese. His thesis, which will be concluded and discussed in 2013, concerns the economic importance of cooperation in Italy and aims to quantify and examine the economic performance of cooperative enterprises in Italy and their contribution to local development, within a comparative perspective with other forms of enterprise.

Giovanni Formilan is a PhD candidate in General Management at the University of Bologna. Formilan is in the first year of his PhD programme and his research project aims to study the existence of a correlation between the governance models adopted by enterprises and their levels of efficiency and effectiveness. The research question is thus aimed at understanding if and how different types of enterprise, involved in specific economic activities, perform differently on the basis of the organizational model they adopt.

LONG-TERM VISITING RESEARCHERS’ PROJECTS

Francesco Minora (Italy) holds a PhD in Urban and Environmental Planning from the Polytechnic Institute of Milan. He is a post-doctoral researcher at Euricse (Marie Curie Fellowship) and an assistant at the Urban Planning Laboratory in the Department of Sociology, University of Trento. His research project, “Production of habitability and conditions of effectiveness in social housing initiatives”, concerns the role and functions of self-organized communities in housing policies. In 2012 Francesco attended the Workshop on Political Theory and Policy Analysis at Indiana University (USA) and presented his work at the Third Sector Research Centre at the University of Birmingham (UK) as well as in seminars held in Trento and Utrecht (Netherlands).

Marcelo Vieta (Argentina/Canada) holds a PhD in Social and Political Thought from York University, Toronto (Canada). His research activity is mainly focused on the worker-recuperated enterprises phenomenon, which emerged after the economic crisis that struck Argentina in 2001. During his post-doctoral research period at Euricse with the project “Recuperating enterprises, reviving communities: the conversion of investor-owned businesses into worker-run firms”, he studied the transformation of investor-owned enterprises into worker-run firms in both Italy and in Europe.

MASTER GIS 2011-12 AND 2012-13

The XVI edition of the Master’s Programme in Management of Social Enterprises (GIS) closed in the academic year 2011-2012. The Master was attended by 15 students from all over Italy, with backgrounds in different disciplines. Their integration into the labour market confirms the positive trends seen by the Master in past years: eight currently have a professional collaboration (five with the same organizations that hosted them for an internship), three other students are continuing with training and employment grants and four are seeking employment. The XVII edition of the Master began in November 2012. In total, 87% of participants of past editions of the Master were involved in an initial professional collaboration, consistent with their training, within 12 months following the end of the Master. Among these, 49% were with the same organization that hosted them for the internship. The Master aims to prepare students for various professional positions: executives and managers of social enterprises, social cooperatives, associations, foundations, voluntary organizations and non-profit organizations in general; officers, managers or coordinators of services provided by non-profit organizations; junior managers in forprofit companies engaged in social sponsorships or in fundraising activities for non-profit organizations.

TRAINING COURSE FOR EXECUTIVES: INNOVATION IN COOPERATIVES AND SOCIAL ENTERPRISES

The second edition of the training course for cooperative and social enterprise managers and practitioners, sponsored by Euricse and Aiccon, was held in 2012. The course focused on five variables that entrepreneurs can exploit to promote and implement innovation processes in their organization: context, learning processes, networks, resources and the governance system. The course was attended by 25 managers from all over Italy, and was organized on the basis of mobile modules, with each session taking place in a different city. Those participating in the first edition have been invited to participate in the new edition, and this will continue for the following editions, so as to realize a kind of continuous learning process for all the students involved. In total, more than 50 social and cooperative entrepreneurs participated in the two editions of the course, which concluded with excellent results. The third edition introduces important changes in regards to content and lectures, keeping innovation as a point of reference within the course design.

During 2012, this work inspired the Forum to undertake a series of evaluations of possible evolutionary scenarios for Trentino’s cooperative banking system and possible rationalization strategies that would allow Trentino’s cooperative banks to continue to provide credit to families and local businesses while maintaining their identity as local and cooperative banks. The results of this work were presented in a report delivered in December 2012 to the leaders of the Federazione Trentina della Cooperazione (Trentino Federation of Cooperatives).

During 2012, the Forum worked to draw up a document on the specific characteristics and added value of the social housing cooperative model. Euricse finished drafting the theoretical part of the document and delivered it to Coopcasa, which is finishing the section concerning the implications for the current regulations. The Forum also organized a study visit to two examples of cooperative social housing of particular interest to the Trentino area: the Andria cooperative in Imola and the Dozza cooperative in Bologna.

Development of a set of indicators for the social impact of social enterprises in the Lazio region Client

Bic Lazio

Objective

The activities of the Lazio Region’s Operational Programme “Towards a system of quality in the third sector” are aimed at, among other objectives, creating a system for evaluating performance, able to assess the supply of goods and services by third-sector entities operating within the region. In particular, the programme involves introducing a “quality brand” reserved for social enterprises, in other words all those private non-profit organizations working in the production of goods of collective interest. A preliminary analysis was produced which illustrates the models of social entrepreneurship in the Italian context, taking into consideration both established and emerging models. This document will make it possible to outline the general characteristics of a system of indicators for measuring the social impact of social enterprises, starting from the content of the regulations

Main outcomes in 2012

Europe Consulting

Objective

As well as research of transnational interest, the European project “Work in Stations” also includes further investigation activities aimed at supporting the initiatives launched at a national level. In particular, these involve studies aimed at measuring the development potential of the network of help centres run by the Ferrovie dello Stato, the Italian state railways, inside a number of Italian train stations in collaboration with local entities and third-sector subjects. The same type of analysis will also concentrate on the methods used for licensing physical spaces owned by the Ferrovie dello Stato to the same public and private subjects to run activities of a “social” nature

Main outcomes in 2012

Completion of the first part of the project, in particular regarding the improvement of the train station help centres’ information system, with the aim of encouraging a more in-depth understanding of the needs of their users

Europe Consulting

Objective

The call by the Italian Ministry for Education, Universities and Research for “social innovation” initiatives represented an opportunity to draw up a collaboration agreement between Euricse and Fits! (the Banca Intesa’s foundation for third-sector innovation) with the aim of supporting the presentation of some projects. The occasion proved useful in defining an “ecosystem” of support services to encourage social enterprise initiatives that want to introduce elements of innovation, capitalizing on the creation of partnerships between different subjects

Main outcomes in 2012

This initial experimentation allowed the assessment of around 20 project ideas, of which five were given assistance in presenting their proposal. The aim is to strengthen the collaboration between Euricse and Fits! in other sectors and in response to future opportunities

DOSSIERS The Euricse dossiers explore topical issues connected to cooperatives and social enterprises through an analysis of the news published by the Italian, European and international press. The objective is to give a coherent overview of the presence of an issue in the media, outlining its history and investigating the interest and comments in the economic and political spheres and public opinion. During 2012, a dossier was produced entitled “Cooperatives and Crisis” a look at the effects of the economic crisis in the cooperative world as seen by the Italian and European press in 2011.

PRESS RELEASES Press releases were issued for Euricse’s most relevant activities, attracting attention from the media and, as a result, from the general public. They were very successful in terms of increasing Euricse’s visibility and reputation and allowed the creation of relationships of trust and exchange with local and national journalists. In 2012, 22 press releases were sent in Italian and nine in English to journalists and foreign correspondents. The press releases generated a press review, which included over 60 articles and television reports dedicated to Euricse’s activities

Journal of Entrepreneurial and Organizational Diversity (JEOD)

During 2012, Euricse published the first issue of its international scientific journal, the “Journal of Entrepreneurial and Organizational Diversity” (JEOD). This refereed journal is available for free online. The topic is of particular importance, given how the recent financial crisis has raised interest in organizational forms other than the traditional for-profit company. The journal’s focus area includes all entrepreneurial forms, presenting both theoretical and empirical research in the fields of economics, sociology, political science and law. The journal takes a multidisciplinary approach, and all articles undergo a double-blind peer review. The journal is published online through a dedicated site (www.jeodonline.com), the Euricse website and the Social Science Research Network (SSRN) (like the working papers). Revisions are managed with Editorial Manager, an online peer-review software. Our goal is for this journal to become an important tool for the dissemination of research in this field, and to be considered one of the leading international journals within two to three years. The online, open-access format makes it widely accessible. The journal has already been well received among the academic community and a number of international experts have agreed to be on the Scientific Committee and Editorial Board: - Masahiko Aoki, Professor Emeritus and Senior Fellow, Stanford University, USA - Partha Dasgupta, Department of Economics, University of Cambridge, UK - Giovanni Dosi, Institute of Economics and Management, Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, Pisa, Italy - Bruno Frey, Department of Economics, University of Zurich - Enrico Giovannini, Department of Economic-Financial Studies and Quantitative Methods, ISTAT and Tor Vergata University of Rome, Ministry for Employment and Social Policies, Italy - Henry Hansmann, Yale Law School, Yale University, USA - Geoffrey M. Why become a member? Supporting Euricse is first and foremost an investment in the future of the cooperative movement. Capital-based enterprises have never had to create their own pool of scientific knowledge because the entire university system is focused on their business model and on churning out the knowledge and skills that they require. This puts cooperatives to a competitive disadvantage , which they must work to remedy. Euricse was created to do this. Euricse’s members have voting rights in the General Assembly and are given precedence regarding requests for training activities, consulting or participation in events. They can also access other complimentary services that are supplied to members on the basis of their contribution .

Become a member

To become a member, complete the membership application form, available on the website, and send it to the Board of Directors. Euricse can also be supported by: - funding annual or multi-year scholarships and/or research grants for young researchers - commissioning and/or contributing to the development of research projects, training courses or events organized by Euricse - making a donation or sponsoring an activity

The photos contained in this publication illustrate the world of cooperatives through the eyes of the project “Ceux qui aiment les lundis”.

“Ceux qui aiment les lundis”, an initiative started in 2011 by the Confédération Générale des Sociétés Coopératives et Participatives (CG Scop) with the aim of creating a book about cooperative and participatory enterprises that visually represents their incredible variety and modernity. The result is a 120-page book, featuring 40 photos taken by photographer Jean-Robert Danton at 40 cooperatives all over France. For the 35th National Scop Congress in Marseille, an exhibition was held of 15 of the photographs, printed on to large panels. The exhibition is now traveling, and anyone interested in hosting it can write to: les-scop@scop.coop For more information on the project: www.ceux-qui-aiment-les-lundis.coop

We thank the Confédération Générale des Sociétés Coopératives et Participatives and in particular Fanny Dive from the Communications Department for her invaluable assistance.
