PARTILLE IS PAVING THE ROAD TO READING WITH ECO-FRIENDLY BOOK BUSES! when they feel like borrowing a new one. The books are also available during the day at the preschool, making it possible to give children a taste for words and pictures in a variety of ways,’ says Ulrika. Rebecca adds, ‘A book should be a source of entertainment and enjoyment, but also help advance the child’s language development in a fun way. Children who know a lot of words can also visualise and imagine more, which makes the world more open to them. When parents read aloud to their children, they also create an opportunity for closeness and sharing – parent and child gain access to the same story world, which gives them new things to talk about.’

With slender means and massive dedication, the library and local preschools are working together to encourage parents to read to their children more. Ulrika Höij and Rebecca Willoughby explain the ‘Book Bus’ pilot project here. The aims are to increase children’s vocabulary and stimulate communication skills, listening skills, and the ability to interpret pictures. ‘The idea behind the Book Bus project is to spark a love of reading in children and give kids “the book habit”. Together with their parents, children will be able to easily borrow one or more books and make reading a natural part of their busy lives. The Book Bus is located in the cloakroom at the preschool. The basic principle is that kids borrow books to take home with them and put them back in the Book Bus

A whole ‘fleet’ of about 60 Book Buses is now ready to roll out to the preschools. The whole idea is to make it easier for parents to borrow books in the future. The Book Buses are now going to be filled with books and financing will be arranged to take the project further. We are looking forward to telling you how things go and are crossing our fingers for a successful outcome for the pilot project. The pilot project was initiated by Ulrika Höij of the Partille Education Administration and Rebecca Willoughby of the Partille Municipal Library. So, what is this book bus, or the ‘Children’s Book Bus’ as we call it? It is a picture book display case that looks like the classic VW T1 Microbus. Shelving bays can be configured and equipped in a variety of ways. Assembly is quick and easy - add or remove bays without dismantling the
whole shelving row; and add or remove shelves without affecting the shelves in other bays. The two end panels in the starting sections create a mellow, gentle impression and are veneered on both sides with holes on the inside to place the shelves. A MULTI-PURPOSE MEETING PLACE Everyone knows that a public library is a place where there are lots of books, so there is no need to design the library space itself to convey this. Instead the interior should inspire and identify with young people so they relate to it and make it their own: a meeting place where they can hang out with friends, a place where activities are run in the evening, and an all-round space amenable to their own ideas – whether they just want to sit quietly in the corner or engage in group activities and conversation. In this space the books can be unleashed to meet young people halfway, as a beautiful and living part of the environment – not anonymous and filed away but rather alive and provoking interest and whetting their appetite for discovering something new.
Concept description The crux of the concept is to make the library a place that young people wish to come and visit, whether alone or to congregate with others. Different library uses and applications therefore need to be combined without conflicting one another. The challenge is combining areas for study, conversation and recreation to accommodate activities such as reading, watching films and playing video games. This has been solved using three screened off zones for these defined functions. That way, the library can be adapted to the diversity and well-being of its users. Rather than having an endless collection of books, it is important to prioritise the correct book selection and presentation so that the

books become part of the integrated library offering and leave room for other activities. A balance between books and new library offerings must be found. The new bookshelf system consists of components that can be freely assembled and installed on even relatively small wall surfaces, for example between windows. The playinspired design of both the shelving and the matching benches, as well as the way in which the system is set up, is conducive to creating a playful impression of the library space. Erecting bookshelves in this way also frees up floor space, which can thus be furnished to make room for attractive meeting places.

The young people’s department is divided using lightweight partition walls that have no doors, only wide openings. This will make it easy to retain an overview of visitors, while at the same time enabling those activities taking place in parallel to be screened off.
Crowd area The first place the user encounters is the social and versatile area that also houses the book collection. This area tends to be the largest, inviting people to explore books by emphasising the visibility of the book collection without becoming overwhelming. Since the bookshelf system can be freely assembled, books can be presented in a split (and hopefully reliable) fashion, something which encourages people to get their visual bearings and make exciting discoveries, instead of the book collection giving the appearance of an anonymous wall of spines, where people can quickly become bewildered if they do not know exactly what they are looking for.

world of cartoons. This lamp can be written on by the librarians to allow, say, single books to be highlighted with the aid of small, bright messages. The integral benches are an easily accessible place to sit down while perusing the books and the swings suspended from the ceiling invite a casual mood around the book collection. The concept behind the large sofas is that the service users can meet
In the seating area the walls and ceilings are upholstered to provide good acoustics. However, the centre of this area is not upholstered to minimise contact with footwear. The alcove can be supplemented with reading lamps and scatter cushions. Reading pit The room is furnished to cater for relaxed and varied sitting and lying postures. Here you can retire with a book or other types of recreation and absorption, and fling yourself down into any position you prefer, either on the floor or on bean bags. friends and take part in activities, such as playing computer games or watching films on the big screen/projector. In this layout, space has been made for 26 users. Train of thought Homework and other activities that call for concentration and a worktop are banked together, with desks and chairs. One wall is painted with blackboard paint, providing an opportunity for self-expression with chalk and a sponge, kept on a shelf of their own.
Instead of the usual institutional lighting with typical fluorescent tubes in the ceiling, reading lights have been incorporated along the walls, softening the surroundings and focusing the attention on the thing one is engrossed in. By introducing an absorption area, there is always something on offer for those wishing for peace and quiet, regardless of whatever else may be happening around the place.
The need to move around this area for any reason other than the intended activity has been minimized by, for instance, having no book collection in this area, and the fact that through-traffic is impossible. By separating different library uses in this way, we have been able to prevent conflicting situations from arising. For example, when people looking for books interrupt and disturb people seeking peace and quiet. We have been able to eliminate these stumbling blocks by creating specific areas such as the Crowd Area and separate Reading Pit. In this way, the total user experience is enhanced, particularly during periods of high visitor numbers because each user group has their own dedicated space. Jorunn Rage, Interior Designer MNIL
In the evening the area will be suitable as a meeting place, where for instance there is scope for playing board games, creating cartoons, fanzines or taking part in courses and other activities. The results of such activities can be put on display in the department with the aid of a book rail, and information about the display can easily be written on the speech bubble lamp. At the end of the room there is a reading alcove where – alone or together with friends – people can withdraw to read or relax and look out of the window.

Cleaning instructions Fluff and loose particles Try to rub the surface material gently, using a smooth brush or blowing with a compressed air device. If the particles will not fall off try using a sticky roller. The sticky roller can be bought in any clothing shop. Coffee- and hot chocolate Nasty stains from hot beverages can be removed by using smooth washing textile liquids. The textile liquids can be bought in well-stocked petrol stations or in the supermarket. Remember always to be gentle when trying to wash off stains. Never use tools with sharp edges.

Grease and stains Try to soften the stained surface with warm water. Then drip soft washing up liquid on the stained spot. Let the washing up liquid operate for a while and then mix the warm water and the washing up liquid gently on the spot with your fingers. Continue mixing the washing up liquid on the spot until it becomes white and lathery. Let the fabric dry by hanging up or gently press a cloth on the “stained� spot. N:B do not rub, only press and allow the cloth to suck up the moisture.

Best before date? How long will plastic film last? Of course plastic film doesn’t come with a best before date. But if you are buying in large quantities to use over a long period of time, remember that the glue on self-adhesive film can age. That is why we recommend a best before date of 2 years. This applies to unused film on a roll. It doesn’t mean you can’t use film older than 2 years. It just means to keep in mind that even though the quality of the film will not have deteriorated, the glue on older film may have.
Matt or gloss? Which is better? Gloss plastic film strengthens the colours on a book cover and is often used to protect photographs. Matt film does not reflect light in the same way as gloss. Barcode labels protected by gloss film can be a little difficult to read. You need to decide what is best for your own requirements.
