Editor’s

LETTER Hello all and welcome to the fourth edition of Fireplace Specialist magazine. Since we last saw each other temperatures dropped, then rose to anything better than during the ‘summer’, bringing us the joint warmest September on record. Not great for those hoping for an extended heating season. The weather is currently matching the season for once and so ‘Silly Season’ is upon us bringing the annual surge in business for sweeps in particular. So how has your year been as we approach the fourth quarter? There has been some calming of the gas and electricity market during the second two quarters of the year but with the Middle East on the brink of war and rising oil prices, it would seem that being able to control your own heating costs may well remain a trend for many years to come. There have been some set backs such as Rishi Sunak’s decision to delay the looming ban of gas boilers in new build homes, which may impact the number of converters to solid fuel heating. And inflation is still a serious issue for everyone. However, if you read on you will hear very positive news from the Stove Industry Alliance on the state of the industry that is sure to instil confidence in

all parts of the sector. In this edition we have our now regular column from high profile sweep Mr Soot, aka David Sudworth. As a former journalist, it’s great to get his well written insight into the trade, and I only had to correct two typos in his article! David has further boosted this edition as we have used his enlightening podcast, ‘Trade Entrepreneur’, to bring you his interview with Clock wood burners founder James Archer. I have filtered out all the best bits, to save you time, as James speaks about how his rapid rise in the industry came about. For those of you who aren’t as time-pressed I definitely recommend listening to the whole thing. We also have our usual range of new product features and industry news and views. I hope you enjoy it and please do not hesitate to get in touch with any potential content of your own. I can be found at nick@euromediaal. com

Consumer demand for woodburning stoves continues to rise Stove Industry Association (SIA) sales update reveals fireplace trade is still hot

Andy Hill, Chair of the SIA

Sales of wood burning stoves in the first two quarters of this year remain strong according to the latest figures from the Stove Industry Association (SIA). Total unit sales for the period 1st January to 30th June 2023 were over 86,300 and increased by almost 19% compared to the first half of 2022. Sales data is collated from all SIA appliance manufacturing members and accounts for approximately 80% of total UK stove sales. 2022 was a particularly strong year for the UK stove industry with a 40% increase in total unit sales by SIA appliance manufacturing members compared to the previous year, with 2023 looking set to see similarly robust figures. Andy Hill, Chair of the SIA noted: “There can be no doubt that stove sales in 2022 were boosted by consumer concerns over spiralling energy bills and, at the halfway point in the year, our data points to 2023 sales at least keeping pace with, if not exceeding last year’s.“ Page 6 • Fireplace Specialist Magazine

“Average energy bills are still way above where they were two years ago and as we head into this winter the motivation for choosing a wood burning stove is still driven by cost, as well as a growing awareness of grid inefficiency.” In addition to tracking unit sales, the SIA has monitored sales of Ecodesign compliant stove models as a percentage of the total since 2017, a full five years before solid fuel heating appliances were required by law to meet the energy performance and emissions standards of the Ecodesign Regulation. By the end of 2019 almost half (49%) of total unit sales were of appliances that already met the Ecodesign standards and by the end of 2021 79% of all stoves sold met Ecodesign.

An Ecodesign compliant wood burning stove produces up to 80% less particulate matter compared to an older, basic stove model and up to 90% less than an open fire. Andy added: “Within a year of the Ecodesign Regulation coming into force on 1st January 2022 100% of all stoves sold by appliance manufacturing members of the SIA met Ecodesign. “As the figures above clearly demonstrate, the stove industry is committed to the continuous improvement of its appliances. Addressing air quality and lowering emissions is a responsibility that our sector takes very seriously, and we will strive to further reduce emissions to ensure that consumers can maintain the right to heat their homes however they choose.”

Boat dwellers become the latest target for woodburner smoke clampdown Narrowboat residents who use woodburning stoves are apparently being threatened with enforcement action. Moored boats are exempt from Smoke Control Areas (SCA) but 2021 Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) guidance allows local authorities to extend the regulations to their waterways if they hold a public consultation. The Guardian reports that Sandwell Council in the West Midlands has done so, while Liverpool, Newham and Cannock Chase – are planning to start fining houseboats who breach SCA regulations. Under SCA rules you can only burn wood in DEFRA exempt appliances but it is thought most narrowboats have older stoves. Leading chimney sweep, David Sudworth, said it would be difficult for canal boats to meet the updated SCA rules. He commented: “Stoves which aren’t DEFRA exempt are everywhere -

some houses, bungalows, flats and of course some narrowboats. “The issue for narrowboats is the flues are very short - many terminate below head height if you’re standing on a towpath. So any smoke is more visible by definition. “To be fair to narrowboats owners, I think if they changed their older stoves for modern ones, they’d struggle as some modern ones would struggle on the really short flues they have. “The reason older ones work on shorter flues is because more heat goes up the chimney. “With more modern stoves, that’s not the case, but you need a good amount of heat for them to draw in the first place and the shorter the flue, the weaker the draw. So you can see the dilemma.”

The National Bargee Travellers Association (NBTA), which represents people living on Britain’s waterways, said most boaters did not have an alternative way of heating their boats. It said it had been told by DEFRA in 2022 that it was “unlikely” that the revised powers would be used by councils against boat dwellers. Commenting in the Guardian, Jack Saville from the NBTA said: “The vast majority of boats are fitted with solidfuel stoves. “Many poorer boaters cannot afford smokeless fuels or the latest stoves. Some rely on foraged wood, donated wood or waste wood, which gives off more smoke.

“They do it out of desperation, not out of choice. “So the threat of fines from an increasing number of councils could stop these often vulnerable people from heating their houseboats this winter.” A spokesperson for the SIA commented: “The advice for those using solid fuel to heat their boat is the same as for those in a house; you can only burn authorised fuels or smokeless fuels unless you are using a Defra exempt appliance.” Images courtesy of iStock

Whole house wood heating from Woodfire As winter rolls around, and high energy costs start to bite, so the demand for boiler stoves starts to rise again. Having been out of fashion for some years, last season’s stampede to buy stoves saw the call for boiler models rocket, just at a time when Ecodesign regulations had forced so many boiler stoves out of production. Woodfire, so long at the forefront of boiler stove design, provided the answer for a lot of customers keen to get away from the spiralling oil and gas prices. Woodfire’s best seller, the

Passiv, is purpose built for well insulated properties, with 7kW going to provide domestic hot water and heating and just 3 kW to the room. Unlike the old boiler stoves, the Passiv has an astonishing 86% efficiency and burns cleanly and controllably, giving whole house heating using the minimum amount of fuel. The two Woodfire CX models echo that trend of limiting the warmth to the room yet still providing

Page 14 • Fireplace Specialist Magazine

enough heat for the hot water and radiators. For those who need higher outputs for central heating then the best way is installing an insert boiler stove. These give you a great uninterupted view of the fire but out of sight above the firebox is a series of heat exchangers that ensure every bit of available heat is extracted. All three of the EX inserts use this technology to provide from 10kW up to the 22kW, with

efficiences between 82 and 84%, and yet giving less than 15% of their heat to the room. The two EX Panorama boiler models both go for a big landscape window, which increases the warmth to the room but makes them such a pleasure to sit by. It is the two double sided Panorama models, however, that hold the crown as the only double sided boiler models on the market. The EX12 and EX17 Panorama DS stoves become the point of focus wherever they’re installed. Their sophisticated combustion systems and overhead heat exchangers ensure efficiencies up to 85% and yet they burn like a dry stove while pumping out hot water to the central heating. Boiler stoves have a come a long way in the last few years and, combined with a thermal store, can be the perfect way to outsmart ever rising fuel costs and be more carbon neutral. Stove Firm Celebrating Qualification Joy For Three Generations of Same Family Grandad, Son and Grandson are all NVQ Qualified Chimney Sweeps

Essex Stoves proudly announces its remarkable achievement as the only company in the UK to have three consecutive generations of a family qualified as NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) certified chimney sweeps. This unprecedented milestone underscores the company’s dedication to unparalleled excellence, traditional craftsmanship, and an enduring commitment to the safety and satisfaction of its clients. Dave Dudley, the patriarch of the family and the cornerstone of Essex Stoves, said: “When I first started in the industry chimney sweeping was seen by many as simply pushing a brush up. The trade suffered from the public’s Mary Poppins idea of a sweep. “At my age it was strange to be going for assessment in something I had been doing for over 50 years, but I could see the importance of giving the customer the confidence in the company that only formal qualification can bring.” Following in his footsteps, his son, John Dudley and now his grandson, Will Dudley, have both received their NVQ qualifications, maintaining the Page 16 • Fireplace Specialist Magazine

legacy of expertise and ensuring that the family tradition of providing the best chimney sweeping services in Essex and beyond continues. “This isn’t just about certification; it’s about upholding a family tradition of excellence,” remarked Will Dudley, the third-generation chimney sweep at Essex Stoves. “Each generation has brought with it new techniques, technologies, and approaches, all grounded in the knowledge and experience of the previous generation.” The development of modern clean burning appliances has created the need for higher levels of expertise and the modern NVQ in chimney sweeping was born from this requirement. And it has got the backing of industry leaders. NCSSA Chair Clive Scott, commented: “The NVQ is the way forward to the future of chimney sweeps and the industry. All NCSSA members have to either hold the NVQ or be working towards it.” Andy Hill, chair of the Stove Industry Association, said: “This suite of qualifications is critical to meet the UK’s future skills needs in solid fuel

and biomass domestic heating as a low environmental impact domestic heat source. It offers independence and confidence to the industry and the public in the promotion of solid fuel and biomass heating as a viable low carbon, cost effective and fuel secure way to heat one’s home.” The NVQ qualification for chimney sweeps ensures that individuals are well-trained in all facets of chimney care, safety, and maintenance. With every generation of the Dudley family being NVQ qualified, Essex Stoves promises a unique blend of time-tested techniques with modern innovation. Phil Cleaver, Chairman of the Federation of British Chimney Sweeps, commented: “The NVQ is the way forward to the future of Chimney sweeps and installers. “It is great to see a long-established traditional family firm adopting the NVQ with three generations now formally qualified as the move progressively forward to meet the industry and consumer’s needs.” Essex Stoves invites homeowners and businesses to experience the exceptional services of a family-run company with an unmatched legacy. With their continued dedication to the highest standards, Essex Stoves not only keeps homes safe but also preserves the rich tradition of chimney sweeping for future generations. Soots You! By David Sudworth, owner of Mr Soot Chimney Sweep and Training Centre Making History As I sit writing this, we’ve just completed the first-ever H011 HETAS Chimney Sweeping Course held at the Mr Soot Training Centre in the North West. In the same week we successfully delivered the H009s sweeping module for experienced installers. To say it’s been a whirlwind week is an understatement, with candidates coming from Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Yorkshire, Lincolnshire

Page 20 • Fireplace Specialist Magazine

and even the Isle of Man! They were brilliant, asked some extremely thoughtful questions and over the week, a real camaraderie developed. For me, as their trainer, it was a great insight to the mind of a new sweep. Time does weird things to your memory, but I can still vaguely remember having palpitations at trying to learn DTCs (distance to combustibles), ventilation

requirements and hearth sizing. The H011 course is extremely thorough, with both theory and practical parts, and all the candidates left the centre ready to begin their journey into the world of flues, nests, and - hopefully - plenty of tea and biscuits from their new customers. They’ve certainly earned them! As for us, we’ve now released dates for our 2024 courses already - visit www.mrsoottraining.com

Back To The Future With ‘silly season’ now in full swing, it’s clear that, for the first time since 2019, customer habits are returning to normal. The pandemic and its aftermath meant that, for the best part of two years, customers were much more available. Fewer holidays, more working from home... all this meant that their flexibility in terms of appointments was greater. This year, we’ve certainly had less of that, with more ‘not available during school run times’ notes being added to appointments. Obviously, after the horror of COVID, a return to normal is welcome. And I now think we are (fingers crossed) well and truly there.

what a strange thing’. I know now!” laughed James. “The ‘fame’ was the biggest shock. About two years ago, I almost couldn’t cope with it - there was part of me which just wanted to walk away from the whole thing. It would be like... I’m in the bath at 10.30 at night, and the phone goes and it’s ‘Bob Smith’ wanting to talk about problems with his stove. It took over my life.” It’s an hour-long interview and to my mind is a must-listen for anyone in the solid fuel industry - see www. trade-entrepreneur.co.uk University Challenge The eldest has now flown the nest to study at university, which means

there’s an empty room available at Mr Soot Towers. And said room also has an original, albeit long disused, open fire in it which I’ve been dying to get my hands on for years. So now I can. Annoyingly though, the start of the academic year doesn’t really fit in well with the sweeping season, so I’m now facing a dilemma. Do I crack on and sort it out now, in the depths of silly season, or brave the winter chills and wait for next spring? I know what I’d rather do. But I just know my impatience is going to get the better of me... And Finally… Speaking of nests, I’m regularly asked what the strangest thing I’ve ever found in a chimney over the years. Unfortunately, I can’t claim to have discovered anything remotely valuable, but there was something which definitely made me smile. A few years ago, I was battling a nest in Stockport and, as the twigs fell, I noticed a faded white card which caught my eye. So I pulled my rods out, turned the vacuum off and fished it out of the debris. To my amazement it was a business card... from a fellow local sweep! Jon, whose card it was, isn’t far from the house with the nest, so it definitely hadn’t come from miles away, but what are the chances? I always knew jackdaws were inventive creatures, but to use a sweep’s card to help build a nest takes the biscuit!

James Archer, founder of Clock Woodburners

The Price of ‘Fame’ Every so often, you speak to someone who really does make a lasting impression on you. Recently, I interviewed James Archer, founder of Clock Woodburners, for my Trade Entrepreneur podcast, and his story is not only truly remarkable, but resonated with me greatly (read more on page 46/47). James went from being just another installer on the tools to essentially becoming the face of a national brand after his stoves really caught the imagination of the industry. There was, however, a flip side to this, and he shared this with me in the podcast. “When we first started, I used to think ‘why do none of the other MDs of stove companies talk to anybody… Fireplace Specialist Magazine • Page 21

The Perfect Chimney Cowl – The Econotop 316 from Colt Cowls Is there such a thing as perfection? Well…perhaps not but Colt Cowls believes when it comes to chimney cowls the new Econotop 316 Stainless Steel is as close to perfection as you can get.

Of course, the next question is why? How can Colt Cowls make such a bold claim…well lets look at the facts. Question: Does it work on any type of fuel? Answer: Yes! It is suitable for use on all types of solid fuels including wood and because it is made of 316 stainless steel smokeless fuels (anthracite, phurnatice etc) as well. It is also suitable for use on gas because it possesses a gas mesh birdguard (which can be removed for use on solid fuels) Question: Is it anti downdraught and does it keep the rain out? Answer: Yes! The aerodynamically shaped Econotop helps prevent downdraught. At the same time, because the sides are partially closed off it helps prevent driving rain from finding its way down the chimney. If the rain falls vertically? It will simply go through the banana slots at the top and will be channelled down the outside of the chimney pot by the cowl. Question: Is it easy to install? Answer: Yes! It comes complete with the very well tried and tested jubilee band used on the majority of chimney cowls sold in the UK. The legs are even attached to the cowl already saving installers even more time.

Images courtesy of Colt Cowls

Page 22 • Fireplace Specialist Magazine

Question: Does it have a guarantee? Answer: Yes! Not only does it come with the well know Colt Cowls Money Back Guarantee first introduced in the early 1930’s which is to say that if it does not solve the problem

encountered (downdraught problems) within a reasonable period of use the customer is entitled to their money back. It also comes with a LIFETIME guarantee! If the product fails at any stage in the future Colt Cowls will replace the product completely free of charge. Question: Has it been tested? Answer: Yes! Not only has it been tested to existing standard BSEN1856-1:2003 it has also been tested to BSEN 164757:2016 a standard that has not yet been normalised! Question: Does it have anything else that can confirm its better than any other cowls out there? Answer: Yes! It has the BSI Kitemark. This mark is only awarded to companies who are able to demonstrate that they are able to meet the exacting quality and production requirements of the relevant British and European (BSEN) standards. Question: Surely its not compact and aesthetically pleasing too? Answer: Yes! Its probably the smallest chimney cowl Colt Cowls produces. The benefits of this are obvious…less storage space required and lower delivery costs for distributors, and more space available on vans for installers! Regards looks….well we think this cowl is pretty subtle on top of a chimney pot. The Econotop 316 Stainless Steel is available with free next day delivery anywhere in mainland UK. Aston University engineering graduate launches first AI powered grill Smart-grill calculates the time needed to cook the food based on size, surface area and fat content, and the burners adapt as needed An Aston University engineering graduate has created the world’s first AI powered grill. Suraj Sudera has created a cooking device called Perfecta™ which cooks the

perfect steak in 90 seconds. Suraj graduated from Aston University in 2015 with a BEng in Mechanical Engineering and again in 2018 with an MSc Ophthalmic Engineering. He initially worked for Aston University spinout, EYOTO, which develops medical devices. He worked his way up to vice president of engineering, before setting up, and then selling, another company. However, it was his love of engineering and product development that sparked his ‘light bulb’ moment which led him to create an AI powered grill which can cook food to an individual’s

exact preference. He founded SEERGRILLS, a Birmingham based startup, which applies AI and advanced technologies to improve cooking. Suraj said: “We noticed there is often difficulty and inconsistency in cooking food; it’s mostly always overcooked and dry, taking a long time. “So, we decided to use our skills and knowledge to apply AI to cook the perfect steak and set up SEERGRILLS. “We developed our first product called Perfecta™ which is the world’s first AI powered grill, the world’s fastest grill, the world’s

most intelligent grill and the world’s most efficient grill.” The device is powered by NeuralFire™ technology, which is AI combined with a proprietary cooking system which can cook more than 50 types of food in under three minutes. AI calculates the time needed to cook the food based on size, surface area and fat content, and the burners adapt as needed. Suraj’s Birmingham-based company now employs 48 people, many of whom are Aston University alumni, and his product is available to pre-order in the US.

Spotlight on Midtherm Group

HETAS visits the chimney and flue manufacturer that has just launched its own wood burner Started in 1968 by Ray Andrews in the heart of the Black Country, Midtherm as a business has evolved under the family’s direction to meet ever changing manufacturing requirements and now consists of several divisions all working in partnership under the Midtherm brand. Known in the industry for their range of chimney and flue systems, the wider group offers a range of services, specialising in the design and manufacture of comprehensive solutions including laser cutting, bending, fabrications, coatings, assembly, and design/production of innovative state-of-the-art air purifying systems. When it comes to chimney systems and flues, Midtherm specialises in the production and distribution of Class 1 Chimneys, Vitreous Enamel and Flexible Liners for the Wood Burning Stove industry. may have seen their fleet of vehicles delivering their products across the country, supported by a trustworthy courier service for on demand orders. Most recently, Midtherm has introduced the Pyrus V wood burner to the market. The stove is Defra exempt and has been certified on the HETAS Cleaner Choice scheme. The Pyrus V is a 5kW stove with a net efficiency of 83.8%, and testing identified the stove has a 63% improvement on the Clean Air Act particulate limit at full load and 68% improvement on part load. Midtherm worked with local casting experts Thomas Dudley Foundry for the design of the stove door and the stove is also available with bespoke log storage. Midtherm has also expanded into the fabrications market and is proud to share its latest project. A prototype biomass boiler, manufactured to the design and specification of one of our long term customers, it is designed for heating air and water systems by efficient controlled combustion. Thanks to the hard work of their fabrication teams this project is almost finished and ready to dispatch. Midtherm Group is also committed to reducing its environmental impact. Electric cars have facilitated a

dramatic reduction in CO2 emissions and this investment forms part of their net-zero journey. Managing Director Richard Andrews commented: “Over half our company vehicles are now electric as we strive towards a fully electric fleet and with a number of charging points already installed we have the infrastructure in place.” With a passion for UK manufacturing, Midtherm’s mission statement reflects their focus on quality. It is to: • Provide exceptional UK designed and manufactured products. • To exceed all customers expectations by applying our extensive knowledge and experience while living our family values of integrity, honesty, support, loyalty and longevity all incorporated within the Midtherm way. Hunter Stoves Group welcomes Scott Mann, MP to Camelford premises Scott Mann, MP for North Cornwall, joined Hunter Stoves Group at its Camelford development and production facility on the 6th October, for a behind the scenes guided tour and to discuss the consumer benefits of modern wood burning stoves. The Hunter Stoves Group facility is a centre for research and development running alongside the full-time production of one of the company’s key ranges: Di Lusso wood burning stoves. Colleagues from departments including operations, design, engineering, production, project management, and marketing were present, and they were joined by Andy Hill, Chair of the Stove Industry Association (SIA), the UK’s trade association for the wood-burning stove industry. Scott and his colleague Rachel were guided around the many different processes that are employed in the construction of Hunter Stoves Group’s product range, including laser cutting, welding and paint spraying; seeing first-hand the care, innovation and

attention to every detail that goes into their production. The visit also provided the opportunity to discuss one of the common misconceptions about modern stoves; that they can’t be both efficient and eco-friendly. Commenting on this, Andy Hill of the SIA noted: “It is vital to make the distinction between modern, Ecodesign compliant stoves and older stoves and open fires. “Modern stoves are engineered to meet stringent environmental standards, reducing emissions by up to 90% compared to an open fire, and increasing efficiency. “Manufacturing members of the SIA, like Hunter Stoves Group, are committed to investing in both performance and

environmental responsibility.” Neil Wynne, Operations Manager at Hunter Stoves Group added: “The Camelford premises is only one part of our overall business, but it is a pivotal cog, employing 11 North Cornwall constituents who come together as a small, yet robust community of passionate individuals. “Operating in rural north Cornwall, we recognise and appreciate the role we play in providing stable and meaningful employment opportunities and manufacturing appliances that

provide low emission, low carbon, low cost and sustainable heating.” Scott Mann MP said: “It was a pleasure to visit Hunter Stoves Group’s Camelford site and learn about the design and production of modern wood burning stoves. “This is a brilliant example of how technology has been harnessed to address the important issues of air quality and sustainability in domestic heating.” Page 36 • Fireplace Specialist Magazine

Shadow minister told of wood sector concerns The Shadow Minister for Energy Security, Dr Alan Whitehead, learnt about the important role that waste wood plays in delivering renewable biomass power during a meeting organised by the Wood Recyclers’ Association (WRA). Dr Whitehead, who is also Labour MP for Southampton Test, was shown around the waste wood operation at Eco Sustainable Solutions’ Eco Park in Dorset on Tuesday, 3 October, before hearing from the WRA about the wider waste wood industry. At the Eco Park, Eco processes 65,000 tonnes of waste wood a year into BioFuel, some of which powers its in-house Biomass Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant which provides renewable heat and electricity for the site. Eco also processes a number of other organic waste streams at the 32-acre site, ranging from green waste to street sweepings. After the tour, the WRA’s Chair Richard Coulson and Executive Director Julia Turner provided an overview of the UK waste wood market and outlined the many benefits the waste wood sector brings. However, Mr Coulson explained

Page 42 • Fireplace Specialist Magazine

that the UK’s waste wood-powered biomass fleet, which provides a vital outlet for lower quality waste wood, was at risk due to uncertainty over long-term support for the sector post ROCs/RHI. He therefore emphasised the importance of the sector being supported in future biomass policy. Commenting on the visit, Dr Whitehead said: “Delivering a clean power system by 2030 will be a core mission of the new Labour government if we are privileged enough to win the election. This will mean lower bills, energy security, and jobs and investment across the country. “I was delighted to visit another sustainable local business and to hear more about the role that waste wood could play in generating renewable energy.” Richard Coulson said: “It was a pleasure to meet Alan and talk to him about our sector. He was

particularly interested to hear about the proportion of biomass energy produced from waste wood and how our sector can be best supported by future government policy.” “At what is a critical time for our industry he was very receptive to our messages and how we are making the best use of our domestic waste resources to contribute to wider environmental goals.” Peter Hardy, Business Development Director for Eco Sustainable Solutions led the site tour and said: “At Eco we are committed to finding ever more sustainable solutions for waste so we were very pleased to show Alan around our wood processing operation and our wider Eco Park. “He was very impressed with our facility when he visited a few years ago so it was great to show him how we have grown and to share our plans for the future.”

The Burning Issues: In conversation with Clock Woodburners founder James Archer Leading chimney sweep David Sudworth, aka ‘Mr Soot’ talks business with one of Britain’s most successful stove manufacturers Clock Woodburners has experienced remarkable success, beyond the wildest dreams of most business startups. Launched just seven years ago, within months it was selling hundreds of stoves, rising to an incredible 10,000 last year. But the man behind the popular designs has revealed that the rapid ascent almost caused him to walk away from the business. Find out why below. David: I’m very keen to hear how you actually got into the industry to start off with? James: Well, I probably fell into it, like most of us. I started off out of school driving a road planer for a friend of mine, did that for a couple of months and then I ended up at Severn Trent Water doing mechanical engineering. I was always pretty handy with a spanner, so we ended up fixing everything and we were known as ‘The Bodgers’. I really enjoyed it. But then the time came where Severn Trent were making cutbacks during the recession. There was enough work for either me or Terry. Terry was a bit older than me. He’d got a family, I hadn’t. So I said you know what, you keep going. And then I ended up working for a family member of mine doing stoves. It was like ‘You should go on the Hetas course,’ and I was like, ‘You know what? Where else can you go on a course for about £700 Page 46 • Fireplace Specialist Magazine

and make £300-400 a day? Probably nowhere!’ So, yeah, I was in it for the money! David: It’s a bit of a jump from being interested in going on the Hetas course to wanting to design your own stove. Is that something you did just because you were handy with a spanner, as you say? James: It was always something I knew I could have a pop at. I’m not going to mention names, but it was all down to another manufacturer’s employee pushing me into doing it. I was kind of holding on for a job with them for a long time and (the guy that I knew) said, “You know what, James, you can do this. You should go and do it.” I’d made bespoke things for people in the past and I was like, yeah, I’m going to do it, I’m going to have a go. James reveals a chance encounter at the Hearth and Home trade show sparked his big break. He said: (Stove firm) TEP were displaying on the other side of the room and they’ve got a new product there and a new door on it. Dan at TEP said, ‘What do you reckon?’ to my friend Keith. Keith being Keith, went ‘Mate that’s a piece of ****.’ in his Brummy accent. And then Dan was like, ‘I’d like to see you do any better.’ He goes, ‘I can’t, but he can over there,” pointing at me. Dan from

TEP came to talk to me and he was like, ‘Look, we can do it and we can distribute it all for you. Here’s the deal: you get it passed through the tests and everything like that, and we’ll distribute it and run it and sort it all out.’ So literally, I was just in the right place at the right time. So I built two versions, I built the eight and I built the five. But the five was obviously going to be the popular one. I couldn’t afford to do two at the same time so I built it and I tested it and the results came out well. It passed - not to amazing standards but they were reasonable standards. I had to get the stove eco-design ready within four weeks and when we went and we passed, I was exceptionally happy. So a year on and TEP are very excited because they’ve got three brands at the (Hearth and Home) show, this new one called Clock, another one to the left, another one to the right, and they sold zero of one of them, about nine or 11 of the other, and they sold 120 Clocks in three days. David: You’ve ended up with a little bit of fame - going from someone who is on the tools, same as everyone else, to someone who’s a known face of a brand which is in thousands of homes up and down the country. Was that a little bit of a shock to you?

James: It was the biggest shock of anything. When we first started, I used to think why did none of the other MDs of stove companies ever talk to anybody? Why don’t they have that interaction? I know now! About two years ago I almost couldn’t cope with it. There’s part of me that just wanted to walk away from the whole thing because (I would) be in the bathroom at half 10 at night and ‘Bob Smith’ would ring me and I’ve got to answer it. So it took my life over, and the worry as well. You can worry when you’re making a small number of stoves every year, because you get the odd problem. But then when you times that by 20, you do get problems. I would sit there all weekend worrying about damage to the brand. And it definitely affected my wellbeing because you haven’t got anybody else to share that with. You drive yourself crazy. You ruin your family relationship a bit because that’s all you can think about. You can’t think

about time with the kids. I made the choice to pull myself back from that side of things. You know, does Elon (Musk) worry about every Tesla that’s been sent out across the world? You can’t worry when it gets to a certain scale. You can’t sit there and obsess over it. David: What do you think about the politics of the industry? Because there’s a lot of politics in every part of the industry and to my mind, a lot of it is unhelpful and it kind of stops the industry being where it could be and probably ought to be. James: What do I think of the politics? They’ll destroy it. They’ll destroy the whole industry in the end. That’s how I think of it. I think if we don’t go forward all together, because we are a small industry, there’s only probably 5,000 fitters across the country, 1,500 to 2,000 shops maybe, 50 manufacturers, something like that. The politics will destroy it because nobody’s talking to each

other at the moment. The SIA is very open, come and join the SIA, talk to us whatever you want to do, any time, but there’s parts of the industry that block themselves off a bit from the rest of us. David: What does the future hold for you? James: I’m gonna start making a few bits and bobs more. I think Clock, you’ll see a couple of new models coming out, but we’ve got to be a bit careful with ourselves that we don’t have too many models, because I think we could get a bit lost in that.

Firestorm Heaters – the new name in outdoor heating The outdoor heating category has remained largely unchanged…until now! Forget your firebowls, and firepits, Firestorm Heaters are here to show you what the future of heating looks like. Launched exclusively for the 2023/4 season, Firestorms offer a new look at the outdoor heating market. A futuristic design sees a 5ft glass tube adorn the fuel loading device, together taking up just a 2 sq ft footprint. But this small footprint packs a mighty punch, with temperatures reaching 350°C; perfect for warming those cold evenings, whilst adding mesmerising ambience to outside spaces. Each heater comes complete with an accessory kit (Long Reach Cleaning Sponge, Metal Shovel, Metal Scraper, Metal Poker, Fixtures & Fittings, and Instruction Manual) and can be set up in a matter of minutes. Maximum heat can also be achieved in just 20 minutes. Plus, with a RRP of £499 these are hugely competitive products that offer increased quality and longevity compared to the ranges currently dominating the marketplace. Award-winning British construction However, Firestorm isn’t just about looks. This is a product with heart. Hand constructed in the Herefordshire countryside, Firestorm Heaters have already scooped the 2023 Glee New Product ‘Best of British’ award, where a panel of industry leaders awarding this much-sought-after accolade were impressed by the detailed and meticulous approach to the design and material sourcing. If that wasn’t enough, the Firestorm brand was also presented with the Glee ‘Leisure & Entertaining’ award at the same time, with judges amazed by the unique design and the company’s commitment to bringing to market greener heating solutions. But what does ‘greener’ heating solutions mean? In the case of Firestorm, it means using an environmentally Page 48 • Fireplace Specialist Magazine

sustainable fuel made up of renewable wood pellets. Sourced from biomass energy experts, who exclusively source from FSC™-certified UK-based, responsibly managed forests and use sawmill coproducts or surplus logs, these pellets offer a much-reduced carbon footprint when compared to traditional fuels, such as gas or coal. What’s more, these wood pellets offer a ‘clean burn’, meaning minimal harmful emissions are emitted during use. An additional benefit is that wood pellets are also kinder to the pocket, with a 30kg bag offering over 12 hours of burn time. Ready for 2024 With Firestorm Heaters now the new name on everyone’s lips, it is the perfect time to find out about becoming a stockist. Stock availability remains high, with a minimum order quantity of just four units, making it an attractive proposition. Plus, with winter and the year’s biggest gifting period on the horizon, stock can be instore within a matter of days to ensure the maximum window of sales potential. New point of sale has also been created to clearly outline the multiple features and benefits, while a mock flame is also available to ‘create the look’ in store and inspire customers. Firestorm’s spokesperson said: “It’s about time that we offered consumers something new. For too long people have been huddled around firepits, pretending to enjoy smoke in their eyes, the smell clinging to their clothes, and heat that disappears with a single gust of wind. As a nation, we’ve normalised rusty, rain-filled fires that are past their prime after just one season, but we say, ‘no more!’ “With Firestorm Heaters, not only have we created a heater that will last but we’ve developed one that performs significantly better than any other solution, including electric and gas-powered models. want to offer consumers longevity, with a 12-month warranty and replacement parts available, should accidents happen. And, perhaps more importantly, the Firestorm offers a story. We truly believe we’re offering something not yet seen in the UK. These products are hand constructed

and finished here in the UK, bolstered by strong environmental values, making it an exciting proposition and one that has kept us very busy since launching at Glee 2023. As the new season approaches and winter closes in, we now want the market to know that we’re ready to respond to
