Apsley Farms; Helping to Grow Healthier Plants and More Sustainable Businesses.
Not made from raw materials. Natural Plant Food is essentially a byproduct of green energy production. It is made entirely from natural, whole-crop materials, that are digested by bacteria to make energy, before becoming a fertiliser. This ‘second wind’, is also helping us move towards a circular economy by using what we have.
Heating people’s homes before feeding their garden. Our anaerobic digestion process mainly generates biomethane, to sustainably heat ~8500 homes, electricity, and CO2, which we capture to put the fizz in your drinks!

Contributing to fossil fuel reduction. Our sustainable biomethane, generated from crops, has not only replaced natural gas in the National Grid, thus displacing fossil fuel usage. The liquid from this process is also an alternative to other fertilisers, which are mined from the ground, or made from fossil fuels.
Recycled AND recyclable packaging. All our bottles are made from 100% recycled plastic. The green/grey colour comes from mixed milk bottle caps. Our label is also made from recycled and recyclable material, and we will continue to improve our materials
Late out of the retail sales starting blocks this year, the small team at Apsley Farms had onboarded around 60 independent retailers in just 4 months. There was even time in the season for re-orders and customer reviews, as confidence grew.
Natural Plant Food has converted the public, garden centre owners, and growers this summer. They’ve witnessed our excellent results in their own gardens. However, don’t just take our word for it.
Our liquid plant food is an important solution to the shifting attitudes regarding sustainability in the garden trade. With a NEW RANGE coming for 2023, we’re aiming for expansion.
Plant nutrition and sustainability are climbing up the agenda for many gardeners, seeing liquid feeds coming into their own. At GLEE 2022, we showcased our new product, Natural Plant Food, which has been part of the growing increase of organic products seen on shelves this year. However, our liquid feed stands apart from the rest. Here’s how…
Consistent. Reliable. Simple. Anaerobic digestate products are becoming more readily available. However, most of them contain waste residues (which is not always stated), meaning the fertiliser product quality and character can change considerably. This can make an inconsistent consumer product. Apsley Farms, on the other hand, exclusively uses crop material. Our product is consistent, reliable, and simple.
From Apsley Farms’ Google reviews:
consisting of: Natural Tomato Food, Natural Tub&Basket Food, and Natural Houseplant Food.
performance, and capturing all surplus energy, Apsley Farms is now virtually net-zero, and aiming to be consistently net-zero by 2023.
Amazon reviews:
GLEE 2022 was no exception in gathering interest, with the requirement for more sustainable, organically approved products seemingly the key theme throughout.

As the backdrop to the Natural Plant Food range, our story of Apsley Farms’ evolution from an arable farm to the third largest biomethane plant in the UK is one of risky, British innovation, and a family affair, at that. We all like the underdog; it’s an inherently British quality. Despite the business thriving now, this family approach will remain as we attempt to not only change public perceptions of farming and energy, but also take people on an inclusive journey towards net-zero, be it heating their homes, or feeding their plants. We are not just a plant feed manufacturer.
In 2009, steadily declining margins from the arable farm sparked creative thinking and the re-writing of our business model. The family essentially bet the farm on the hopes that the biogas plant would be a viable business and ‘went large’, feeding gas into the National Grid in 2014 for the first time.
We’ve grown and improved efficiencies with all our outputs successfully over the last 10 years;
• injecting biomethane into the National Grid,
We have continued to invest heavily in technology, to drive efficiency and run as sustainably as possible. Following good practices, such as minimizing ground disturbance, maximizing essential tractor performance, and capturing all surplus energy, Apsley Farms is now virtually netzero, and aiming to be consistently net-zero by 2023.
• generating green electricity to power all our operations and to export, capturing CO2 for the food and drinks industry,
• selling bulk bags of fibrous digestate as mulch direct to customers near the farm,
• retailing the nutritious liquid from the system,

The shift in the industry will no doubt see the big players spewing out new, natural products, boasting all desirable USPs in the near future. They may, however, struggle to achieve the sparkling product credentials with a ‘start-up’ feel that we at Apsley Farms are so uniquely lucky to claim . This is what particularly excites us about the new products on the horizon for 2023, consisting of: Natural Tomato Food, Natural Tub&Basket Food, and Natural Houseplant Food.
