High Output Humbuckers
I can’t believe it’s been more than 30 years since Cathy Carter Duncan and I started Seymour Duncan Pickups out of a loft in downtown Santa Barbara. When I think about how far we’ve come, it pretty much comes down to two things: The product. And you.
INSTALLATION
All Seymour Duncan and Basslines pickups are built by hand in my Santa Barbara factory. There are cheaper and more mechanized ways to build pickups. I know. I’ve seen them in my travels. But Seymour Duncan pickups are not about “cheap”: they’re about tone. Besides being a pickup designer, I’m a player and I know how pickups are supposed to sound. And, I believe, to build them properly, they have to be made by hand with the highest quality materials. Then there’s you, the customer. We’re nothing without you. When it comes to developing new products or re-designing old products to make them better, it’s all done to provide you with a quality pickup or stompbox that makes you sound better. That’s what it’s about here. It’s been that way for the last 30 years. And it’ll be that way for the next 30. Yours in tone,

Déjà Vu Tap Delay This revolutionary pedal combines digital delay with real analog delay and adds tap tempo for incredible versatility. Recommended for all genres of music.
application While the Déjà Vu includes the standard wet/dry blend control and the required delay time adjustment, the Déjà Vu also features an analog/digital blend control, to achieve any desired level of balance between the warmth of a real Bucket Brigade delay and the squeaky clean sound of a microprocessor-based digital delay. There’s also a Feedback control, which allows you to dial in a runaway recycling of your sound in the style of an analog tape echo. Also features two insert jacks. The Feedback Insert jack allows an external processor to be included in the recycling path, so that the processor’s effect becomes more intense at each regeneration, thus continuously morphing the delayed sound as it recycles. The Wet output/loop jack works on the sound after it leaves the recycler, allowing custom tweaking of the overall character of the wet signal before it recombines with the dry signal.
description
The Déjà Vu has Tap Tempo to match the delay time to the tempo of the music. And a Ratio Control that gives you multiple delays for each press of the Tap Tempo footswitch. And a tempo “Heartbeat” red flashing LED to keep everybody honest (or, at least, in time). And a “Modulation” control that lets you add a flange/chorus effect to the time delay.
MODS Both insert jacks can connect directly to a standard volume pedal so the Regen Insert jack becomes a foot control for the level of regeneration, and the Wet Insert jack becomes a foot control for the Wet/Dry mix. And you can connect two foot pedals at the same time for ultimate control of the delayed sound. Connect a second amp to the stereo output to hear an incredible, ethereal, space-filling stereo effect. Or use the stereo output by itself to get a sound with a totally different timbre.

double back compressor Finally a Compressor that doesn’t squash your tone! The Double Back feature blends some of your guitar’s uncompressed signal with the compressed signal. The result is a totally unique stompbox: one that offers traditional compression while retaining dynamics, harmonics, and transient frequencies for a natural sound. And it’s extremely quiet.
application The gain control element is a VCA (voltage-controlled amplifier) which offers transparent gain reduction, consistent ratio, and predictable attack/release curves due to the faster response when compared with other compression methods like light and photocell. But perhaps what makes this compressor so unique is the Double Back feature which offers the option to blend back some uncompressed signal to restore some of the dynamics and “feel” lost during compression. There are three Double Back frequency options: “High” blends back top end only so sharp attack, and harmonics still come through. At low settings, tactile sensitivity is restored. Higher settings let you cut through the mix with amazing control. “Mid” blends back mid-range frequencies, perfect for fattening up your tone; and “Full” blends back the full frequency range to enrich overall dynamics. The Double Back features a built-in, easy access battery door, a 100% analog signal path and true bypass.
description Simply put, a compressor makes quiet passages louder and loud passages quieter. Most other compressors can get in the way of your guitar’s natural transients and feel. Thanks to the innovative and unique Double Back feature and associated three-way EQ switch, the Double Back Compressor lets the original guitar signal leak back into the compressed tone for a natural performance like no other. The Double Back can also increase the clean sustain of your guitar, and it does this with almost no extraneous noise or interference thanks to revolutionary VCA circuit topology. This is the cleanest, quietest and most expressive compressor around. players

twin tube blue The Twin Tube Blue is the perfect stompbox for the nocompromise blues player. You know the type. They have to have the best possible tone and they’ll spend any amount of money to get it. Fortunately, this boutique quality “secret weapon” pedal won’t break the bank.
application High-quality, two-channel, guitar preamp voiced for the blues. Uses a duet of premium, mil-spec, subminiature, USA-made Phillips-Sylvania® 6111 dual triode tubes. Great for modern blues, Chicago blues, Texas blues, and classic rock. description Too often, inexpensive tube gear runs in “starved plate mode,” where the tubes function like clipping diodes and do not actually amplify. The Twin Tube Blue’s high-plate voltage and 100% vacuum tube signal path allows the tubes to operate at their fullest potential and provide maximum dynamic range. This means you get the most gain and all the smooth tone you expect from a high-quality tube preamp. Two channels provide versatility. Like all Seymour Duncan stompboxes, the Twin Tube Blue is true bypass and features a fully encapsulated toroidal transformer for quiet operation. Heavy duty steel chassis. usa MSRP

twin tube mayhem If you could take the tones of the all-time heaviest rock guitarists and inject them into a high voltage two tube stompbox, this would be it.
application High-quality guitar preamp with built in boost. Uses a duet of premium, mil-spec, subminiature, USA-made PhillipsSylvania® 6205 pentode tubes. Great for old school metal, new metal, thrash, death and doom. description
The high plate voltage and 100% vacuum tube signal path allow the tubes to operate at their fullest potential and provide maximum dynamic range. Additional gain is achieved with a high voltage, low noise, discrete Class A input stage. There are no clipping diodes. The Class A input stage increases the resistance of the stomp-box to microphonics. The result is maximum dynamic range, the most gain, and the heaviest tone you expect from a great tube preamp voiced for metal. Also features userselectable 4dB or 8dB boost for pre-setting rhythm and lead levels. True bypass. Fully encapsulated toroidal transformer for quiet operation. Heavy duty steel chassis.

By rotating the gain control knob you can add pure, flat-EQ gain, ranging from 6dB to 25dB! The Resonance Switch drops the resonant peak of a single coil pickup up to 5KHz, making a single coil sound like a full and fat humbucker. Features fully discrete Class A circuitry along with true bypass. Comes in a heavy-duty steel chassis and runs on a single 9 volt battery.
of note
For Resonance Switch to work properly, the SFX-01 must be first in the signal chain using passive pickups and a standard guitar cable — not a wireless unit.

lava box The Lava Box is not your ordinary distortion/overdrive pedal. It actually reacts more like a great amp than a stompbox, with the depth and dynamics that give well-made amps so much character.
application
Mosfet distortion/overdrive with incredible dynamic range. Even at the highest gain settings, you can turn down your guitar’s volume control and the Lava Box will clean up beautifully. Onstage, you can set the Lava Box for a loud lead tone and simply use your guitar’s volume control to get your clean and crunch tones—all without switching channels or kicking in other effects. In the studio, you can explore the huge array of tones that are available with the intuitive controls, creating special-effect thin tones or spooky dark sounds that are perfect for layering and overdubs.
description The six-position “Rumble” bass roll-off control changes the sonic character of the Lava Box’s distortion for a huge range of tones, from bright and spanky to deep and warm. Whether you have the thinnest single-coil in the bridge of your guitar or the woolliest humbucker in the neck, there is a Rumble setting that’s perfect for it. players

paranormal bass direct box The Paranormal Bass Direct Box is a super flexible stage and studio tool. It functions as a direct box with three bands of active EQ and a dedicated Slap Contour switch. It’s a must for every gig and every session.
application Like all DIs, the Paranormal sports a balanced line out XLR jack (with ground lift) so you can feed a front-of-house mixing board or a recording console with no loss of signal. But that’s where the similarities end, because the Paranormal Bass Direct Box also features active EQ and a Slap Contour switch. Use it on stage to split a signal between your amplifier and the mixing board. Or, use it in the studio as a direct recording device. description The Paranormal features three bands of active EQ specifically optimized for bass. This allows you to dial in your tone in any room, sculpting your lows, mids, and highs quickly and easily with up to 12dB of boost or cut for each band of EQ. It’s the perfect solution for bassists who want the flexibility of an active system but don’t want to modify their instrument. The SFX-06 also features our proprietary Slap Contour switch, which applies an additional preset EQ curve to whatever settings you’ve chosen with the 3-band EQ. This produces a tone that’s perfect for slap playing but also works great as an alternate sound for fingerstyle or pick playing. players Pete Prevost / Sanctus Real, Brad Fordham / Jimmie Dale Gilmore usa MSRP

power grid
If you like the smooth, easy-to-dial-in sound of vintage amp tremolo, you’ll love the Shape Shifter™ Tap Tremolo. But if you also crave unrestrained versatility and you want to delve into ultra-modern experimental sounds like flutters, shimmers, warbles and even radical “helicopter chops,” the Shape Shifter is still your tremolo!
With all the power and control built into the SFX-08 Power Grid, it could just be the last distortion pedal you buy. Ever!
application Sonically pure, 100% analog signal path delivers the familiar lush, hypnotic, pulsing tremolo vibes characteristic of ‘50s tube amps. Digital tap control offers incredible control. Shape and Wave controls provide unparalleled versatility. description There are two modes. In Rate mode the tremolo speed varies continuously from one to 20 cycles per second. An LED pulses in time with the tremolo effect for easy Rate setting. In Ratio mode, the speed is established by tapping the Tap Rate switch, allowing for easy synchronization of the tremolo rate with the song tempo. Also, in Ratio mode, the tapped tempo can be expressed in your choice of four tap-to-note ratios: 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, or 4:1 (1/4 notes, 1/8 notes, triplets, or 1/16 notes). The Wave control allows the tremolo effect to go from the smooth modulation of a sine wave through the sharper characteristics of a triangle wave to the abrupt on/off effect of square wave drive. Most classic tremolos increase the volume over a certain period of time, say a quarter of a second, and then decrease the volume over a similar period of time. This gives a smooth, even feeling to the tremolo effect. When set to the middle of its range, the Shape Shifter’s Shape control does exactly that. But when the Shape control is rotated away from its center position, the relationship between the time spent increasing the volume and the time spent reducing the volume changes. For example, you can dial in one-tenth of a second of volume increase followed by four-tenths of a second of volume decrease, or vice-versa. This adds a very different feel to the tremolo effect. With a quick swell and a slow drop, the effect is percussive like a piano. Conversely, with a slow swell and sudden drop, the result is reminiscent of a tape played backwards

application High gain, solid state distortion stompbox capable of myriad tones thanks to a three-band active EQ section. Perfect for all genres of rock. description Designed to provide powerful overdrive and distortion suitable for rhythm and lead playing, thanks to five stages of class A, discrete circuitry, which are cascaded to provide nearly 100dB of gain and are managed by a multi-element gain and volume control system that allows fine control. With the Power Grid, your tone is further refined thanks to three bands of active EQ. Each band allows for up to 12dB of boost or cut at frequencies selected for maximum control of the electric guitar. This allows you to create tones with a far greater degree of surgical precision than what’s possible with any distortion pedal with passive EQ. Matches great with aggressive pickups like the SH-15 Alternative 8 and AHB-1 Blackouts.

f or tone that sets you apart
is your relationship with your guitar on the ropes? are you constantly fighting with it to put out great tone? or maybe you’re just not getting any. you know, your instrument should love you as much as you love it. if things between the two of you aren’t working out, then it’s time for a new pickup. what’s a pickup?
coil
Technically, pickups are transducers that “pick up” string vibrations and translate them into an electrical current which then comes out of your amp as a tasty jazz run or an in-yer-face death metal riff.
A pickup coil is merely a long strand of insulated copper wire wound thousands of times around a bobbin (or coil form) that has magnetic pole pieces at its core or a bar magnet at its base. We use several types of insulation and several gauges of wire to give you the right tone.
why change pickups? If you’ve got an instrument that looks right and feels right, but doesn’t sound right, then the pickups in that instrument are not right. Seymour Duncan/Basslines manufactures hundreds of models for all kinds of instruments with the single-minded goal of helping you find your tone.
ok, this is about me. so, how do I choose the right pickups? First off, determine your tone needs. Do you need more output, sustain or better dynamics? Are you looking for a thicker tone or more bottom end? Answering these questions is the first step in choosing the right pickup. Seymourduncan.com has lots of great tools; the Tone Wizard™, soundbytes, videos, cool wiring diagrams, a User Group Forum with the most tone-minded folks on the ‘net, plus Q&A with Seymour, artist interviews, dealer listings, newsletters, the Wall of Fame and more.
what makes one pickup sound different from another? Basically, a passive pickup is composed of two things: a magnet and a coil of insulated copper wire. The magnet works to magnetize the strings creating a flux field. When the strings vibrate, the movement of this flux field creates an alternating current within the pickup coils. This alternating current then travels from the pickup to the amplifier. When you crank your amp, you hear the combination of the pickup and the amplifier interpreting the vibration of the strings.
11
number of turns The number of turns of copper wire wound around the bobbin greatly affects the performance of the pickup and the overall tone of your guitar. A pickup with lots and lots of turns will have high output, but this output will come at the expense of dynamics and high end. A pickup with way too many turns will actually lose output due to resistive losses caused by excessive impedance. On the other hand, an under-wound pickup will come across sounding thin and weak. Getting the right number of turns for a great-sounding pickup is as much art as it is science.
d.c. resistance and resonant peak D.C. resistance is resistance to the flow of direct current. Generally, the more turns of wire, the higher the d.c. resistance, the higher the output and the lower the treble response. For single coils, the d.c. resistance generally ranges from around 6.5k for a vintage tone, to 15k for a high output tone. For humbuckers, the range is around 7.5k to around 16.5k. Resistance to the flow of alternating current is called impedance and it changes with frequency. The frequency where a pickup’s impedance reaches its highest level is called the resonant peak. Generally speaking, the higher in frequency the resonant peak, the clearer and brighter the pickup’s tone.
ok, what makes seymour duncan and basslines pickups so good?
We list the d.c. resistance and resonant peak for almost all of our pickups. It’s most informative to compare D.C. resistance and resonant peaks between similar pickups, that is, between single coils or between full-size humbuckers for example, and not across broad categories, like comparing a single coil to a full-size humbucker. Besides actually hearing the pickup, this is the best way to figure out what the pickup is going to sound like.
magnet The magnet brings life to the pickup. We use two different magnet materials: Alnico and ceramic. Alnico, an alloy which includes aluminum, nickel and cobalt (“AL-NI-CO”), tends to have lower string pull and creates a softer magnet field which improves sustain and helps smooth out the tone. We generally use two different strengths of Alnico magnets -- Alnico 2 and Alnico 5 -- to create two totally different tones. Alnico 2, which is slightly weaker than 5, tends to have a smoother, warmer, rounder tone with softer attack. Alnico 5 has a brighter, more dynamic tone with a tighter bottom end than 2. We recently added an Alnico 8 humbucker to our lineup, the SH-15 Alternative 8 (see page 16). Ceramic magnets are a blend of magnetic iron and rare earth materials like barium or strontium, which is formed into bars under high pressure and intense heat. If you are looking for power and extended range in your tone, ceramic is the way to go. Ceramic creates a magnet field more powerful than that of Alnico and is more resistant to environmental aging. We use ceramic magnets on some of our humbuckers (like the SH-13 Dimebucker), single coil sized humbuckers (like the JB Jr.), and bass pickups (like the active soapbars), because it produces a more aggressive tone with a punchier bass end and enhanced upper mids.
Chamfering pole piece magnets
Each pickup is built by hand
magnet (continued) Understanding the relationship between d.c. resistance and resonant peak is a great way to discern the “voice” of a pickup. But of equal importance is understanding how the magnet of the pickup matches with the various types of tone woods used in guitars. Ask yourself this: is my guitar naturally bright sounding or warm sounding? Bright sounding guitars will have a tendency to have a pronounced high-end detail; and warm sounding guitars will have more emphasis in the lower-midrange. Certain woods, like mahogany and rosewood, will often create a warm sounding guitar. Other woods, like maple and ebony, will make a guitar bight sounding. What kind of wood is used on your guitar? Here’s the trick: you can balance a bright sounding guitar with a warm sounding pickup. And vice versa. Alnico 2 has a characteristic warm tone with soft attack. Generally, this means it usually works well with bright sounding guitars. Alnico 5 and ceramic generally have a brighter tone than Alnico 2, which make them well suited to warm sounding guitars. Keep in mind that these are general guidelines; and we make some broad-based suggestions for woods for each pickup in their catalog description. But some Alnico 2 pickups, like the APS-1 Alnico II Pro for Strat®, for instance, are actually bright sounding – not because of the magnet, but because of the low d.c. resistance and high resonant peak. See? It’s all related.

Designed jointly by Seymour and humbucker inventor, the late Seth Lover. Just like the original 1955 P.A.F.s, the SH-55 utilizes a nickel silver cover and long-legged nickel silver bottom plate, butyrate plastic bobbins, plain enamel wire, Alnico 2 bar, wooden spacer, and black paper tape. To be completely true to the original design and tone, the pickup is not wax potted. The tone is vintage P.A.F. The unpotted cover gives a slightly “honky” microphonic quality. Vintage style single conductor cable standard.

application
Ground breaking, patent pending design allows a full-size humbucker to split to either a “real deal” P-90 or a traditional single coil. Perfect for a wide variety of styles including country, pop, surf, jazz, blues, classic rock, and heavy rock.
description Until now, if you wanted humbucker, P-90, and vintage Strat® tones, you’d have to haul three guitars to the gig. Enter P-Rails™. It’s a full-size humbucker that splits to either a full-size P-90 or a special Alnico-powered single-coil Rail pickup. The humbucker sound is full and expansive, owing to the mis-matched coil configuration. The P-90 is a super fat. And the Rail coils, when used together, sound like the “2” and “4” positions in a great Strat. complete setup
P-Rails are best used in a matched neck and bridge set. To get both humbucker and P-90 tones, use a two-way switch (push-pull or mini-toggle). To have humbucker and P-90 tones and bring in the added dimension of the single-coil Rail, use a three-way switch (DPDT on-off-on).
The Stag Mag uses the same type of magnets as a vintage single coil. Each coil is as powerful as a single-coil. When the pickup is split (sometimes called “tapped”) such that only one coil is used, the sound is bright and glassy, like a vintage Strat® pickup. In full output, humbucking mode, the tone is rich and full with a bright high-end. Comes with fourconductor hookup cable.
complete setup
Though often used in the bridge position, the Stag Mag can be used in the neck as well.
guitars
Use with any guitar with traditional string spacing in the bridge position (1.925” or 48.9mm). Works with rosewood, ebony or maple fingerboards.
available mods
Make sure to use the Stag Mag with a switch to maximize the real-deal single-coil tone when split. See our website for wiring diagrams for split wiring and other cool mods.
guitars P-Rails can be used in any guitar set up for a traditional humbucker or Trembucker. A single P-Rails will bring added dimension to your guitar. However, to optimize P-Rails’ unique splitting capabilities and get the best single-coil Rails tones, use a neck and bridge set.

“I’d tried out a lot of different pickups and some of them had the right kind of distortion, but I’d be missing the sustain or feedback I wanted, or I’d get the wrong kind of feedback. When I got together with Duncan, I explained exactly what I was looking for and I gave them one of my old pickups as a starting point. They changed the magnet type, the wire gauge, the number of turns, and other factors and then sent me two or three samples to try out and they nailed it... So basically, what we got was a super hot-rodded Dime pickup that’s got the right kind of Dime distortion. It’s toned in so that it feels like you’re playing on a sponge. It’s very saturated—not to the point where it’s overly fuzzy—but it has a smooth and crunchy distortion tone. You don’t have to fight to get the guitar to ring out in the way you want. It will give you some extra gain, but it won’t go so far that your sound breaks up and is going crazy. If you ever listen to a Pantera record, that’s what you’ll hear through this pickup.”

That means they have 12dB to 14dB less noise than other active pickups. Blackouts come with 25K pots, stereo jack, battery clip and a plug ‘n play “quick connector” for ease of installation. blackouts™ application
9-volt active humbucker for aggressive playing styles. Recommended for old school metal, garage, punk, thrash, drop tunings, and other heavy rock styles.
description
The “other” USA-made active humbuckers use unbalanced inputs in a differential preamp. The problem is, an unbalanced differential preamp is not very effective at cancelling hum. Our engineers figured out how to capture the tone that players want in an active design, but using balanced inputs. The result is 12dB to 14dB less noise, plus more lows, more highs, and more output. Simply put, Blackouts have more tone than other active pickups. Now available in nickel and gold covers.
description Blackouts Metal pickups are voiced for extreme heaviness. They are our highest output electric guitar pickups. Period. They have a screaming voice with amazing mid-range punch and they produce thick, dark chords, and hard-hitting leads. When you play extreme aggressive styles and you have to cut through above the other instruments in your band, Blackouts Metal are the call. complete setup There’s only one version of Blackouts Metal, but you can dial up two very different output levels (see below). Paired with our SFX-04 Twin Tube Mayhem, Blackouts Metal pickups in high-output mode are so extreme, so brutal, and so vicious, you might want to check with local law enforcement to make sure they’re legal. Not really. But you get the idea.
complete setup Blackouts are available in individual neck and bridge models, or as a two-pickup set. All versions come with all necessary mounting hardware, including pots, jack, and a battery clip.

available mods Blackouts Metal have a unique dual pin configuration on the underside of the pickup for two modes of output: loud and louder. With the same aggressive tonality in each mode, you now have a choice in output. With the jumper removed, you have a high output bridge humbucker that’s still compatible with a neck pickup or the clean channel on your amp. However, with the jumper in place, you unleash all the raw power, incredible output, and untamed aggression. The pins can also be wired to a mini-switch or push/pull, for an on board boost! Not splitable. Available with black or white covers.
For all humbucker guitars. The blade magnets make this pickup suitable for both humbucker and Trembucker string spacings. Black or white plastic, nickel, black

circuits to adjust the frequency response. LiveWire Classic II pickups differ from other actives because of their unique 9-volt preamp, which yields more headroom and more dynamic range compared to most 9-volt systems. This means you can get more signal-before-distortion and enhanced frequency response, eliminating the sterile sound associated with other active pickups. Active pickups are especially valuable to the guitarist who uses chained signal processing effects, where a moderate amount of noise at the beginning of the signal chain (meaning the pickup) can become excessive by the end.

® counterparts, Tele® replacement pickups come in two basic varieties: true single coils and single coil-sized humbuckers. The true single coils in this section all use six Alnico magnet pole pieces. Some are “vintage correct” with every detail of the original Tele pickups reproduced: from cancelling magnets hum to wire to flatwork to hookup cable. Others are higher output, typically to add more fatness to correct the overly bright and thin sound found with some Tele pickups – especially in the bridge position. Some players order the higher-output single coils with the “tapped” mod. In this case, there are two outputs to the same single coil pickup: one that accesses all the pickup windings and gives full output; another that only accesses a portion of the total windings and produces vintage output. The flick of a toggle or push/pull switch determines full output versus tapped output. pro series

Active pickups use a built-in, battery-powered preamp. It modifies the signal by boosting the voltage coming from the coil and using tone shaping
circuits to adjust the frequency response. These ultra-quiet, hum-canceling pickups are especially popular with bass players for whom a moderate amount of noise at the beginning of the signal chain (meaning pickup) can become excessive by the end. Unlike other active pickups, which players can pick be sterile-sounding, the designers at Basslines, who are bass players themselves, built our active pickups to accurately reproduce the warm, natural qualities of a well-built bass. Features low noise, low distortion and high headroom. Voiced for use with Blackouts for Bass but with switchable treble control, it’s also useful for all musical styles and genres.
description
The lows are deep, clear, and tight. There are two treble frequency centers to choose from. The lower setting is perfect for adding growl and bite to traditional P, J, and MM tones. The higher setting provides crystal clear top end to modern-sounding, full-frequency bass tones and when used with Blackouts for Bass gives punishing clarity without any brittleness.

install your own pickup A note about soldering safety: Soldering should be done in wellventilated areas. Soldering irons and molten solder can be very hot and cause severe localized burns if handled improperly. Make sure you wear protective eye covering when soldering. When you’re finished soldering, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. 1) Remove the strings from the guitar. This makes it easier to remove pickups and pickguards without scratching the guitar.
Introducing our artist signature series; Scott Ian’s “El Diablo”, George Lynch’s “Super V” and Warren DeMartini’s “RTM” for openers. See seymourduncan.com for details on these and other custom shop offerings.
Have you ever had major gear-lust for a pickup that doesn’t exist yet? Are you just “jonesing” for a recreation of an old pickup that’s long been out of existence? Do you simply have to have a custom version of an existing pickup – say, a JB with a little more bottom end? Do you own a great old pickup that hasn’t worked for 30 years but you can’t bring yourself to toss it ‘cause one day you “might” get it restored? If you answered “yes” to any of the above, then the Custom Shop is the place for you. Seymour and staff can make practically any custom fabrication you can dream up; and they can do custom winds of regular pickups. The Custom Shop can do just about anything you want, pickup-wise — the only limitations are your imagination and maybe your wallet. Lead time can be several months or more. This isn’t fast food. If you’re interested in ordering a Custom Shop pickup, e-mail customshop@seymour duncan.com, fax 805.964.9749, or call 805.964.9610 Monday to Friday 8AM-5PM (Pacific) 5427 Hollister Avenue, Santa Barbara, CA 93111-2345. Please be sure to include your address and phone number.
To install pickups in your instrument, you need screwdrivers, wire cutters, wire strippers, electrical tape and a “pencil” type soldering iron (don’t use a larger soldering gun, it’s transformer can demagnetize your pickups). If you are not confident in your soldering abilities, it’s a good idea to take your guitar to your local guitar tech. A few bucks spent wisely at this juncture can save many dollars later (and maybe your instrument). Follow these general steps and you should be on your way.
2) Remove pickguard or control cavity covers. If you have to lay the pickguard on the top of the guitar, place a soft cloth like a T-shirt between the pickguard and the body of the guitar. Be gentle! It is very easy to scratch lacquer finishes. 3) Draw a diagram of the way your guitar is wired now. Pay particular attention to the wires coming out of the existing pickups, noting their color and where they are attached. This will help you if you run into problems remembering where some connections went. 4) Carefully de-solder the pickups from where they are currently attached and clean the excess solder off of the parts with solder wick. It’s always easier to solder onto a nice, clean part than one that has solder splattered all over it. 5) Take a minute to note the old pickup’s orientation in the instrument (screw-side of humbucker towards the neck, for example) and then remove the old pickups from the pickguard or mounting rings that were holding them in place. Take the old pickups and wrap them in a soft cloth or paper towel and store them in a cool, dry place away from magnetic interference. This will keep them ready if you’d like to put them back in the guitar at a later date (especially important if it is a vintage instrument).
6) Install the new pickups where the old ones were, making sure that you retain the proper orientation. 7) Run the new wires back to the controls that the old pickups were attached to. Measure the wires to the proper length (long enough to make it to the connections with about an inch or so extra for slack), cut, strip and tin the wires, and carefully solder them onto the old connections. Use our diagrams to help you if our color-coding is different from the guitar manufacturer’s. 8) Reattach the pickguard and/or control cavity covers, string up the guitar, adjust the pickup height, and test out your new pickups. Make excellent music! 9) Setting string height. A good starting point for the distance from the bridge pickup to the strings is 3/32 of an inch. The neck pickup can be set to provide a good output balance when compared to the bridge or to produce a particular tone when used together with the bridge. If a pickup is too close to the strings the tone tends to get muddy and lack clarity, and if placed too far away the tone will be thin and lacking in character. All pickups have a “sweet spot” where its tone will be optimal for a given guitar and pickup combination. Use your ears to find that spot.

the journey is the destination pickup demonstration audio CD series This CD series was designed with one purpose in mind: to highlight the tonal differences between various Seymour Duncan electric guitar pickups. To achieve this, we used the same Strat® for all the Strat® replacement pickups, the same Tele® for the Tele® replacements, etc. The pickups were all played through the same amps – one for clean, one for distortion — at the same settings, all by the same player playing the same licks. Pickup heights were kept constant and fresh strings were used for continuity. We did everything humanly possible to eliminate variables. The three volume set covers our 50 different electric guitar pickup models. It’s divided between: a) humbuckers, P-90s and mini-humbuckers; b) Telecaster®, Jaguar® and Jazzmaster® replacements: and c) Strat® replacements. Both neck and bridge versions are demonstrated through clean and distortion amp settings. Each volume includes detailed liner notes and a Tone Chart. The series was produced and engineered by Matt Blackett, who also played all the guitar riffs and breathed in far too many solder fumes. $5.00 per disc or $12.00 for the three-volume set. F OR tone that set s you apart
glossary Active Pickup
A pickup that uses an electronic preamp. Why would you want that? For more gain, tone shaping, and reducing output impedance. The advantages are less noise, ease of creating new tones, and no high frequency loss from using long cables. They’re particularly useful for producing a strong, noise free signal for driving multi-effects racks (remember the ‘80s?). Our LiveWires are active pickups. So are many of our Basslines models. (For comparison, see “Passive Pickup”).
Calibrate, Calibrated Set
This is when we wind each pickup in a set such that you can maintain a balanced output level when switching between the pickups. In a calibrated set, the hottest pickup is in the bridge position and the middle pickup is RW/RP (see “RW/RP”).
D.C. Resistance
The resistance to the flow of Direct Current. It’s a general indicator of the output and tonality. A higher d.c. resistance usually means more output and less brightness. For single-coils, a vintage d.c. resistance would be around 6.5 to 7k. High output single coils or single coil-size humbuckers might have a d.c. resistance of 16k or higher. Humbuckers generally range from 7.3k for vintage tone to 16k or higher for a hot rodded tone.
Dun-AgedTM
Our process of providing custom and stabilized magnetic fields in a pickup. Developed in Seymour’s Custom Shop.
Epoxy Potting
After vacuum wax potting the coils, sometimes we seal a pickup in epoxy to protect it from damage due to handling, exposure to the elements and normal use. You’ll find this on many of our active Basslines, LiveWires, and Woody pickups. In pickups like our Metal LiveWires, the epoxy potting can further reduce the tendency towards microphonic feedback in high gain situations. (See also “Wax Potting”).
Four-Conductor Wiring
On nearly all of our humbuckers (except a few vintage models), we terminate the beginning and ending leads from each coil to a cable with a common shield. This allows for very cool wiring and switching configurations, such as series/split/parallel or splitting with coil selection in/out of phase with itself or in/out of phase with another pickup, etc.
Gauss
(Rhymes with “mouse”). A unit of measure of flux density which describes the field strength of a magnet.
Ground
A common reference point in an electrical circuit.
glossary Hum Canceling, Humbucker
Seth Lover’s 1955 pickup design which consists of two coils wired together electrically out of phase and with magnetic polarities reversed. The effect of this configuration is to cancel 60 cycle hum and other higher frequency harmonics, and leave the string signal perfectly intact. Seth was a good friend of the Seymour Duncan family. He passed away in 1997 and we miss him.
Impedance
The resistance to the flow of Alternating Current. In passive pickups this figure is variable with frequency.
Millivolt
One-thousandth of a volt. A pickup’s output can be measured in millivolts. A typical passive pickup might have 100 to 300 mV output.
Ohms
The standard unit of electrical resistance. A pickup’s d.c. resistance is usually measured in KΩ/Kohms.
Out Of Phase
The electrical linking of two coils or two pickups in such a way as to provide at least partial cancellation of the signal. Think of two identical coils, one of which has its hot and ground reversed (opposite electrical polarity). With pickups wired out of phase, usually the low frequencies are canceled so the resulting sound is thin and sometimes brittle. Think: Jerry Garcia-tone. This should not to be confused with the “in between” or “notch” positions on a Strat® with a five-way switch. Sometimes the combinations of the middle pickup with either the bridge or neck pickup are referred to as “out of phase.” To avoid confusion, we call that tone “quack” or “cluck” or “snark.”
Parallel Wiring
The electrical linking of two coils in a parallel or side-by-side fashion. The sonic effect compared to a series configuration is approximately 40% lower output but with added brilliance and clarity on the high end. A humbucker wired in parallel will sound somewhat like a single coil without losing its hum-canceling quality. (For comparison, see “Series wiring”).
Parallel AxisTM
Our patented pole piece system that utilizes four separate small rectangular poles per string (except for the PA-TB1n Parallel Axis Stack, which has two per string). The poles are arranged in a configuration that decentralizes and softens the magnetic field providing smoother highs and greater sustain while minimizing string pull. Our bridge position Parallel Axis pickups use Trembucker spacing. (See “Trembucker”).
Passive Pickup
A type of pickup which uses no internal active electronic circuitry. Most of our electric and acoustic guitar pickups and many of our Basslines pickups are passive. Passive pickups have the advantage that their attack and overall tonality are more consistent with vintage tones and dynamics. Also, they don’t require a battery to function. (For comparison, see “Active Pickup”).
73
Phase
The relationship of two wave forms with respect to time.
Polarity
The relationship of positive and negative electric currents to each other.
Pole Piece, Non-Magnetic
A ferrous (containing iron and magnetically conductive) metal piece used to control, concentrate and/or shape a magnetic field. Pole pieces usually fall into two broad categories: adjustable and non-adjustable. We use many different types of adjustable and non-adjustable pole pieces. The physical make-up of a pole piece will vary the magnetic field of the pickup. Generally a more massive pole piece, such as the button-head cap screw used in the SH-8 Invader™, will produce a broader field. This gives higher output and a more aggressive attack. Smaller or thinner pole pieces tend to produce a lower field intensity giving less output and a sharper attack. It is possible to combine two or more types of pole pieces in one pickup in order to achieve a subtle balance between attack, definition, and fullness.
Pole Piece, Magnetic
This refers to a pickup in which the axis of the magnet is aimed directly at the strings and the magnet itself is serving as the pole piece. You’ll find these most commonly on vintage-style single coil pickups where Alnico rod magnets serve as pole pieces. Our 5/2™ series of single coils combine both Alnico II (on the high strings) and Alnico V (on the low strings) for an incredibly balanced pickup with a punchy low end and a warm top end – a Seymour Duncan first!
Resonant Peak
The frequency at which the impedance of a pickup is at its highest. Within any particular category of pickups, a higher resonant peak usually means a brighter, clearer sound. Amongst Strat® replacement pickups for example, the resonant peak will vary from 3.5KHz (Hot Rails) to 10.0 KHz (Vintage Staggered).
RW/RP
Stands for Reverse Wind/Reverse Polarity. This refers to reversing the winding direction and magnetic polarity of one single coil pickup in a two- or three-pickup guitar. So, for instance, if the middle pickup in a Strat is RW/RP, you’ll get hum cancellation when you use that pickup together with either the neck or bridge pickups.
Series Wiring
The electrical linking of two coils in a serial fashion producing a higher output, and a fuller and more powerful sound. This is the standard hookup for humbucking pickups. (For comparison, see “Parallel”).
Splitting, Split Pickup
The process of shorting out one of the two coils of a humbucker, thereby producing a single coil sound. Sometimes erroneously referred to as “tapping” a pickup. (For comparison, see “Tapped Pickup”).
Stack®
Our patented technique of stacking two coils, one above the other, in order to cancel hum and noise but keep a single coil tonality and size.
Tapped Pickup
A coil which has two or more hot leads providing multiple output levels and tones. With a tapped pickup and a switch (like a pushpull pot or a toggle), you can access both high-output and vintage output from the same pickup just by switching between the full wind and a reduced wind. (See “Split Pickup”).
Transducer
Something that converts energy from one form to another. A pickup is a transducer because it converts string vibrations into an electrical signal. A speaker converts an electrical signal into kinetic motion, so it’s a transducer too.
Trembucker™
Our name for a full-size humbucker with wider pole-to-pole spacing for use on many guitars with tremolos or wider string spacing. Some Trembuckers use Parallel Axis pole pieces (see “Parallel Axis”) and some look just like regular humbuckers with slightly wider spacing.
Volt
A unit of electromotive force which causes a current of one ampere to flow through a resistance of one ohm.
Wax Potting
A method of saturating a pickup in wax to hold the coil and any mechanical parts absolutely rigid. This is done to prevent microphonic feedback. We use a proprietary vacuum wax potting method to insure that any air “voids” inside the pickup get replaced with wax. You’ll thank us when you’re jamming away with your 100 watt amp on “10” and your pickup isn’t squealing like a stuck pig. Oink.
