We look very much forward to welcoming you in Portugal’s capital city Lisbon, for the Europa Nostra’s European Heritage Congress 2012 to be held from 30 May through 2 June. This event, jointly organised by Europa Nostra and its Portuguese member organisation Centro Nacional de Cultura, will bring together many of our members and other European heritage professionals and volunteers, as well as proud laureates of the EU Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Awards.

The public highlight of the Congress - the European Heritage Awards Ceremony - will be held on 1 June at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Jerónimos Monastery, in the presence of H.E. Aníbal Cavaco Silva, President of the Republic of Portugal, and T.R.H. the Prince and Princess of Astúrias. Europa Nostra’s President, Maestro Plácido Domingo and the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism, Sport, Media and Youth, Androulla Vassiliou, will jointly present the 2012 Awards to the laureates, who will come to Lisbon from all over Europe. The day before (31 May), you will have the opportunity to learn more about these award-winning achievements and interact with the laureates at the Museu do Oriente.

On the morning of 1 June the important Forum on “Saving Europe’s Endangered Heritage” will be organised in the premises of the prestigious Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, a main partner of our Congress. As usual, the forum will be open to the interested public. The General Assembly will take place on 2 June in the stunning historic setting of the Library of the Mafra Palace located outside Lisbon. The Board and the Council will hold their meetings on respectively 29 and 30 May.

Finally, the programme includes a heritage visit in Lisbon (30 May), an excursion for those delegates who are particularly interested in Industrial Heritage sites (2 June) and a day trip to visit World Heritage Monasteries outside Lisbon (3 June). A very attractive post-congress tour to northern Portugal concludes the Congress.

Immediately after the General Assembly meeting, this excursion will proceed by bus to Lisbon. A lunchbox will be provided. The trip will start with both the famous Aqueduto das Águas Livres and the Museu da Água with the Barbadinhos Steam Pumping Station (1880). From there, we continue by bus over the modern, exceptionally long, Ponte Vasco da Gama bridge, over the Tagus estuary to the Gunpowder Factory at the Vale de Milhaços. From here, we take a ferry boat to Cais do Sodré, located at the riverside embankment in Lisbon centre. At Cais do Sodré Railway Station, we board a recently restored vintage carriage of the National Railway Museum to Cascais. There, we shall join the other congress participants – who stayed in Mafra that afternoon – for the Closing Dinner at the Cascais Cidadela Palace.

Northern Portugal presents a heritage and landscape very different to central and southern Portugal, and since the 18th century is the richest area of this small country due to the trading of Port wine, textiles, silver craftsmanship and camellia flowers. With an Atlantic mild climate, it boasts a beautiful landscape where its main rivers are the Douro and Minho. There are a large number of manor houses, churches, and monasteries, with granite combined with whitewashed walls as a typical feature. The tour departs from Lisbon and ends at 15.00 at Porto Airport.

Transport from and to the airport Lisbon Airport is located close to the centre of the city. The cost of a taxi from Lisbon Airport to the city centre is approximately g 15 each way. Please note that taxis in Portugal are quite affordable. Several buses arrive and depart outside the arrivals terminal. The Aerobus can be used to travel from and to the airport. It has regular daily departures, and offers a good connection to the main spots of the city. The cost of a one-way ticket is g 3.50. Tickets can be purchased on board or at the Tourism Office Counter in the airport’s Arrivals public area. It is recommended never to lose sight of one’s luggage.

The Lisboa Card provides unlimited usage of buses, trams, metro’s and trains in Lisbon and also provides free entry and discounts to the major museums and monuments in Lisbon region. The Lisboa Card is available at Lisbon Airport from the Turismo de Lisboa booths, but also at the Welcome Centre, Kiosks, Train Stations and hotels. You can choose between cards valid for 24, 48 or 72 hours. This card is most suitable for infrequent visitors, and is valid from the first check-in.
