ExecuJet Africa launches service to plan emergency responses
ExecuJet Africa is partnering with international risk management company MS Risk to offer emergency response plans for clients with staff based at remote locations in Africa. The company launched the service, called Urgent Response Plan, at the Mining Indaba 2013 show in Cape Town. ExecuJet and MS Risk will work with clients’ human resources and safety managers to develop evacuation plans for those companies who do not currently have one in place, or integrate services into an existing programme. The plan will also include intelligence reporting, remote site visits, ground and air service options, and logistics coordination. “We’ve had an increase in requests from companies to urgently extract key foreign staff based in remote locations within Africa, which led us to launch this service with MS Risk. “An evacuation exercise requires thorough planning well in advance to integrate the air service with other logistics involved, and this is beyond the scope of most other air service

providers,” says Chris Frost, business development manager for flight operations at ExecuJet. “The Urgent Response Plan was well received at the show. In light of recent events in Africa, corporations have an increased awareness of these issues and there is a demand for this service within the mining sector.”

ExecuJet also showcased a range of other aviation services at the show, including aircraft and helicopter charter flights, scheduled services to remote locations and air cargo operations. The company’s global charter fleet now includes three helicopters from South Africa’s Acher Aviation; a Bell 407, an Agusta 109 Power and an EC130, plus access to other models. “We recognise the delivery and transportation issues related to mining and have identified rotary wing aircraft as a cost-effective option for mining companies to improve their efficiency and enhance safety,” says Mike Clark, director of flight operations. ExecuJet Africa operates a number of aircraft to and from the mining areas in Africa and views helicopter charter as essential when transporting mining personnel between sites, particularly those with basic or non-existent landing strips. Rotary wing support services include seismic survey operations, vip aviation support, oil pipeline inspections and security surveillance support.

Latest managed Legacy boosts expanding Empire Dubai-based Empire Aviation Group has signed a management contract for a second Embraer Legacy 650 with a private owner. It will join a fleet of two super midsize Legacy 600 jets already operated by the company. “Our aircraft management services are the core of our regional business and it is gratifying that we continue to attract new aircraft owners to bring their aircraft under EAG management. In fact, we were the first operator in the Middle East to manage a Legacy 650 and we are delighted to add a second to our managed fleet, and to expand our long-haul capabilities,” says Steve Hartley, executive director. Following its recent success attracting aircraft under management in India, Empire Aviation has also launched a comprehensive range of business aviation services for private aircraft owners on the sub-continent. The one-stop shop approach covers aircraft sales, aircraft management, flight operations and charter. Empire took its first business jet under management in India in December 2012. The 2012 model Bombardier Challenger 300 is based at HAL Airport in Bangalore, where the company opened its first office in India recently and where there is already a team of six aviation specialists on the ground. It is in negotiations for a further three managed aircraft and plans to have five aircraft under management in India by mid 2013, with the team doubling in size over the same period. Paras Dhamecha, executive director, comments: “The Indian economy is proving robust and with more Indian companies globalising their operations, we see a healthy

challenges facing the development of private aviation in India; notably that the current tough regulations on aircraft importation and ownership are slowing market development, and airports are becoming busier and running close to capacity. However, the company is optimistic about its prospects in the growing market. “We see part of our initial role as helping company and individual owners and aircraft operators in India understand the benefits of working with independent and experienced professional aircraft managers,” says Hartley. “Most private aircraft in India are company owned and managed by an in-house operations team, which is not always very cost effective. Empire Aviation takes an asset management approach to aircraft ownership and management, which starts with understanding the owner’s needs, and building a business model around this, ensuring access to all the benefits of the aircraft while protecting its value through professional operation, management and maintenance to manufacturers’ standards.” Initially established in Bangalore, Empire plans to extend its services to Indian aircraft owners through a network including additional offices in north and central India. “We have made good progress in rapidly establishing EA in India,” concludes Dhamecha. “The initial response from owners and operators has been very encouraging and we are now moving on to the next phase which is to focus on private operators who require the full management spectrum including induction of their aircraft in India.”
Jetflite heads for the City of London From February, Finnish air charter operator Jetflite’s Citation Sovereign has been granted permission to fly to London City airport. “This ensures maximum time saving and flexibility when travelling to London city centre,” the company says.

operated by Bond Air Services. The recently-launched Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA) has announced that Bond was selected to supply the new frontline life-saving resource for an initial seven-year period, following a rigorous and extensive tendering process. A five-strong paramedic team will crew the charity helicopter. Bond training services manager Andy Mottram says that the men will undergo three weeks of intensive helicopter familiarisation training. “The staff recruited for SCAA are top-line paramedics and they show all the aptitude, enthusiasm and ability to make first class air ambulance crew,” he says. “The helicopter is a completely different environment for them but they all seem comfortable with it and are settling into training perfectly.”
Swiss Aviation Consulting has signed an agreement with an undisclosed customer for another Airbus A319 business jet to be supervised by its aircraft asset management programme. The aircraft is based in Germany and is operated under EUOPS standard. “This is the second
A319 to join our programme,” explains Dr Daniel Lütolf, chairman of Swiss AeroHoldings Ltd. “At the moment we have full asset management assignments for about 30 aircraft and almost 80 per cent thereof are actually large cabin and long range business aircraft.”
ASL bv, based at Eindhoven airport in the Netherlands, has become the first operator in the Benelux countries to offer the Citation X for charter and presented the aircraft at a special event to celebrate the company’s first anniversary. The ASL group is headquartered in Belgium, but now has its own Dutch air operators certificate and operates from three airports in the Netherlands.
National Grid takes UK’s first Bell 429 National Grid Electricity Transmission Plc has purchased the first Bell 429 to be operated in the UK, and will task the helicopter with inspection and maintenance of power lines. “We required a versatile and reliable aircraft to support our mission, which is providing power to millions of people in the UK. We selected the Bell 429 for its unmatched ability to operate in challenging conditions and for its reduced maintenance costs,” says Mike Hannon, field support manager. Final delivery of the aircraft will take place on completion of EASA approved customisations at Bell Helicopter’s European headquarters in Prague. It includes an operator workstation in the cabin of the aircraft featuring SyQuest 20" HD display, MX-10 control unit, HD Nano Flash recorder, USB hub ports and keyboard. National Grid is an international electricity and gas company, and is one of the largest investor-owned energy companies in the world. It delivers gas and electricity to millions across the UK and the north eastern United States. It uses helicopters to survey and repair power lines and pipelines throughout its network. “National Grid’s decision to purchase the Bell 429 was driven by the aircraft’s versatility, speed and cost efficiency,” says Patrick Moulay, md, commercial business for Bell Helicopter in Europe. During their development Bell 429s have conducted extensive flight demonstrations in every continent, except Antarctica, and have been certified in more than 40 countries.

One of two helicopter air ambulances operated by Bond Air Services on behalf of the Scottish Ambulance Service, an EC135T2i, has reached 10,000 flying hours. The total was passed while transferring a maternity patient with abdominal pains from Cambeltown hospital to Crosshouse hospital in Kilmarnock, by one of the first EC135s introduced into Bond’s fleet. As part of the recently renewed contract between Bond and SAS, two of the latest medically-equipped EC145T2 aircraft will be introduced in September 2014. The new aircraft type will further enhance this longstanding service by delivering improved range and endurance, while also providing more room for patients and equipment. Garry Fraser, SAS general manager for air ambulance operations, says: “The two EC135s fly around 2,000 missions each year and were the first helicopters in Scotland to have been purpose-built to our specific medical specifications. They provide an essential lifeline to remote and rural communities, as well as responding to major incidents and serious emergencies across the country.” These government-funded helicopters in Glasgow and Inverness are now to be supplemented by a Bolkow 105 based at Perth, and also

Saad Wallan is investing in a pair of Falcon 900 aircraft.
Wallan boosts range with Falcon 900 additions Saudi Arabia’s Wallan Aviation has expanded its fleet with the purchase of a pre-owned Falcon 900EX EASy II, and an order for a new 900LX for delivery in the second quarter of this year. The company will operate both aircraft for its own use with the option of offering one or both to the charter market. The sale marks Wallan Aviation’s first entry into the Dassault Falcon range and large cabin segment. Chairman Saad Wallan, who is also a board member of MEBAA and the Saudi Aviation Club, is a passionate aviator and has been a type rated pilot since 1992. He says: “We chose the Falcon 900LX because of its advanced technology and efficient performance and range, its go anywhere flexibility and its resale value. For example, the Falcon 900’s range connects Riyadh or Dubai directly with Shannon airport in Ireland, where passengers can clear customs immigration for the whole of the US. “Falcons are increasingly proving
themselves with operators in the region and this helps develop experience and build confidence in the Falcon range, which also has attractive emissions and environmental credentials.” Wallan Aviation has been operating in the Middle East for 20 years and has also expanded to other services in the aviation field, including charter, jet maintenance and a flight academy. It was awarded the Certificate of Appreciation by the US Department of Commerce for strengthening American-Saudi ties. The company employs more than 800 staff, with a team of 35 dedicated specifically to aviation. The Falcon 900LX flies 4,750 nm non-stop and can connect Dubai with Beijing, Jeddah to Cape Town, Riyadh to Chengdou, or Dammam to Singapore. Dassault says it already plans to deliver six Falcons to Middle East customers over the next 18 months, growing its fleet by ten per cent. More than 60 Falcon business jets currently operate in the region.
Eight of Europe’s major business air charter companies have joined together to form a strategic alliance under the name AirClub. Modelled on the alliances formed in recent years by groups of airlines, it is thought to be the first such cooperation between business operators. Founding members ACM Air Charter, Air Alsie, Air Hamburg, Corporatejets, FlyingGroup, GlobeAir, Masterjet and PrivatAir aim to offer their customers increased flexibility and availability, while enhancing customer service. The partners, which are based in seven different countries, will accumulate their resources and know-how, providing a wider range of solutions and more tailored approaches to their customers’ needs. They believe that AirClub will enable its members to offer customers those services and products that as individual operators they would not be able to provide; asset management of many diverse aircraft types, greater choice of charter aircraft ranging from very light jets to corporate airliners, as well as a broader selection of home bases. Christian Hatje, svp business aviation of PrivatAir and chairman of AirClub, says: “History has been made. AirClub is the first ever alliance of business jet operators and will operate more than 100 business jets. We will combine the strength, purchasing power and expertise of some of Europe’s leading players within the industry to provide clients with premium service, top aircraft availability and flexibility as well as
the highest possible standard of safety and comfort. “I believe that we will see the same phenomenon as in commercial aviation 15 years ago; either you are part of a great, solid group of players – an alliance – or you will struggle to survive in this increasingly challenging industry. Having all kinds of different operators within AirClub will be a huge benefit, as it allows us to learn from and complement each other. We are confident that our wide variety of experts pooled with our different backgrounds and networks make us stronger than any other player in the industry.” Hatje adds: “We will strive to launch our own AirClub online booking system, allowing customers to choose from a vast, diversified fleet located all over Europe, as well as a special member’s programme to complement the latter early next year. Booking a private jet through our online system will be as easy as renting a car.” Mauro de Rosa, chief marketing officer Europe at GlobeAir AG and deputy chairman of AirClub, says: “GlobeAir is very proud to be a part of the first, and so far only, corporate jet alliance. We are always looking for ways to upgrade our customer service and partnering with other operators offers our customers the benefit of an extended fleet. “AirClub is an absolute milestone in today’s business aviation and we are convinced it will further enhance our standing as an industry.” Other operators may be invited to participate in AirClub in the future.

LEA puts English roasts and Thai curries on the menu London Executive Aviation is continuing its fleet expansion with the addition of another Challenger 300 based at Luton airport. This brings the total number of aircraft in the LEA fleet to 28. The Challenger can seat up to ten passengers plus crew and stewardess, and allows non-stop flights from London to destinations such as Moscow, Jeddah, Lagos and Dubai. LEA managing director George Galanopoulos says: “The addition of this aircraft to our fleet highlights our dedication to offering the broadest range of aircraft options for business charter operations. We have amassed considerable experience of operating this type and have been very pleased with its dispatch reliability. We have also received consistently positive customer feedback. “Our Challenger 300s fill a niche in our fleet between the midsize Citation Excel and large cabin Embraer

Legacys. Their impressive range, coupled with modern, spacious cabins, make these aircraft an extremely popular choice.” LEA has also announced a partnership with aviation catering provider High Flying Food, covering six of LEA’s UK bases: London City, Farnborough, Luton, Biggin Hill, Stapleford and Oxford airports.
Patrick Margetson-Rushmore, LEA chief executive, says: “We have always been dedicated to providing the best quality private air travel experience for all our clients and this partnership provides the latest example of this. As we have such a wide range of customers, it is important for us to be able to cater for a variety of tastes and demands and High Flying Food can help us do just that.” Sheila Greenwood, cabin service manager, adds: “We’ve taken a great deal of time to research the best ways to provide the highest quality catering options. Having undertaken a trial with High Flying Food, I’ve seen firsthand the positive reaction of our clients, and we are very pleased to offer this service across our fleet.” Menus can be personalised to suit all dietary requirements and include a selection of dishes from around the world, ranging from traditional English roast chicken to Thai curries.

Qatar’s web site targets Middle East and Russia Qatar Airways’ private jet division has launched its corporate web site in Arabic and Russian languages. The new local language sites are expected to better communicate Qatar Executive’s business offering in its home market – the Middle East – and growth markets such as Russia and the CIS, where luxury travel is on the rise. Available at qatarexec.com.qa/ar and qatarexec.com.ru from the home page of the corporate web site, the new sites mirror Qatar Executive’s English language internet presence. Commenting on the developments, ceo Akbar Al Baker says: “The Middle East and Russia are key markets due to the continuing booming economy in these regions. We are proud to be able to facilitate business for high-powered entrepreneurs in this part of the world, through providing the fastest and most convenient means of travel for their global businesses.” Alongside three Challenger 605s and two Global 5000s, Qatar Executive also operates a Global Express XRS featuring a spacious two cabin configuration, accommodating up to 13 passengers.
Royal Jet reports busiest year as it looks to replace existing BBJ fleet
Chris Mace, group commercial director of Klyne Aviation, with SaxonAir’s newly appointed ceo Alex Durand.
Durand takes the helm as SaxonAir’s ceo Bell 412 tows largest banner A Bell 412, owned by Falcon Aviation Services of Abu Dhabi, flew along the shore of the United Arab Emirates while displaying the world’s largest aerial banner in celebration of the UAE’s National Day in December. “This is our fifth year of flying this amazing flag, and it seems to get bigger every year,” says A J Baker, vp of commercial business at Falcon Aviation Services. The banner measured more than 4,600 sq m and was visible up to 12 miles away, ensuring the entire city of Abu Dhabi could witness the flight.
Alex Durand has been appointed to the role of chief executive at UK charter operator and flight support company SaxonAir. Durand brings to the role over 20 years of experience in the business aviation sector, most recently as UK representative for the ProAir Group, accountable manager of Finesse Executive and prior to that, group managing director for Gregg Air. “I am delighted to be joining SaxonAir having watched its development with interest,” says Durand. “I am also excited about the new opportunities that I can bring through my own established network of industry relationships and experience.” The new appointment has enabled md Chris Mace to take up a new role within SaxonAir’s parent company Klyne Aviation, as group commercial director. His primary focus will be to create new business opportunities for the companies within the group, including overseeing marketing
activities, and maintaining a proactive commercial focus. Mace welcomes Durand’s appointment: “His extensive experience in leadership, business planning and development, operations and safety management will support SaxonAir’s future growth and increasing presence in the international business aviation marketplace.” Despite recent economic conditions, SaxonAir reports that it has experienced a 12.5 per cent increase in charter flights flown and a 65 per cent increase in handled flights at Norwich airport since moving into its multi-million pound facility in May 2011. SaxonAir’s clients include many blue chip companies, individual business men and women, sports teams, musicians, the offshore energy industry and many local businesses and private families. The current charter fleet now consists of five light and midsize jets and two helicopters.
Royal Jet will celebrate its tenth anniversary in May, and reports that it operated 3,135 flights to 370 cities in 136 countries during 2012. “This year, we expect to comfortably outperform our operational and financial statistics forecast for the full period of 2012,” says Shane O’Hare, president and ceo. The operator has also reported its busiest-ever year in 2012 for medical evacuation missions, up by 10 per cent over another record year in 2011. As the oldest company to provide medevac services, Royal Jet has flown over 1,650 missions to date. O’Hare explains: “Our service goes well beyond providing air ambulances, medical teams and equipment. In the past few years Royal Jet’s medevac division has handled missions in the most challenging of situations across community, political and government sectors from around the world and nearer home in the GCC.” Growing the fleet and refurbishing the remainder of the current fleet is planned for 2013. Royal Jet is currently investing $9 million in the interior refurbishment of one of its Boeing Business Jets. Upgrades include a new state-of-the-art inflight entertainment system, live TV,

SATCOM, Wi-Fi and global mobile systems, while furnishings such as luxury seats and sleeper beds will also be enhanced. “We are assessing our long-term fleet plan which would include replacement of the existing BBJ fleet by 2016,” says O’Hare. “We have also signed a commercial agreement with Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies (ADAT) to lease 4,450 sq m of hangar space at the facility at Abu Dhabi International airport. This provides us the capability for simultaneous maintenance of two BBJs and one Gulfstream and allows the in-house maintenance team to expand their existing capabilities to include all Achecks, as well as fulfil other complex maintenance tasks.”
Royal Jet crews can expect to be busy in 2013.

Air Charter Scotland plans worldwide capability Last year proved to be an exciting one for Air Charter Scotland with the introduction of a Legacy 650 and Gulfstream 200: “Managing these aircraft was always going to be an interesting challenge, however, one I was confident we could achieve,” says commercial director Derek Thomson. “With such great performance and range on these aircraft it was evident as a company we could and should grow.” So, obtaining FAA Part 129 approval was the first port of call for the company, allowing unrestricted commercial flights between the EU and USA, and this was achieved during December along with its Canadian AOC. “This complements
the existing worldwide AOC perfectly to cater for the increase in long-range business requests,” he adds. Air Charter Scotland already operates a number of CJ2 and CJ2+ Citations, a G200 and a Legacy 650, however, with the growing demand for long-range business and an increase in transatlantic travel requests, the decision has been made to enlarge the fleet. Along with expanding the Legacy fleet this year it will also be introducing Bombardier aircraft. “We are extremely excited about introducing these aircraft to the fleet, without giving too much away at the moment, these developments will allow us to cater to all markets, worldwide,” says Thomson.
Swiss and Austrian charter partners each “do what they do best”
Amjet’s MD-83 will be divided into three sections, vip, premium business class and first class.
Amira Air of Vienna has entrusted the marketing and sales responsibilities for its entire fleet of eight private jet aircraft to Zeptair AG of Switzerland. The Amira Air charter fleet currently comprises five Challenger 300, a Global Express, a Global 5000 and a Hawker 400XP. As a reciprocal arrangement Zeptair has placed its colourful Challenger 300 into the Amira fleet, along with its brand new Global 5000 Vision. Through this union, Amira Air says it intends to concentrate on the management, operation and further growth of its fleet, allowing service professionals Zeptair to concentrate on fleet marketing and sales and the development of their combined client portfolios; each doing what they do best.
Amjet brings ‘second life’ to its MD-83 Athens-based aircraft charter and management company Amjet Executive has embarked on a major interior refurbishment of its vvipconfigured MD-83. The jet is expected to be back in service during March, complete with a 42-seat cabin divided between a vip section of three lounges, a premium business class section and a first class section. It will have three lavatories, eight television screens, two espresso machines and capacity for 100 pieces of baggage. “The refurbishment will ensure that our guests will benefit from our high standard of comfort within a quiet and efficient cabin atmosphere,” says chairman Capt Abakar Manany. The MD-83 was manufactured in
1992 and will now have an interior much like the rest of Amjet Executive fleet. It includes a private salon with a direct access to the master bedroom and its lavatory. In addition, the process will involve changing or refurbishing all seats, carpets, woods, windows panels and shades, as well as ceiling panels. All the materials chosen are said to be of high quality, coming from the best manufacturers in the world. The company is also studying the possibility to install a Wi-Fi service on board this aircraft during 2013. Amjet’s extensive fleet also includes Falcon 50, 2000, 900 and 7X types, and Airbus A319. During the coming year a second Falcon 7X will be added to the line-up and this will be available for charter.
Capt Abakar Manany is looking forward to more expansion with the arrival of a second Falcon 7X during this year.

Gama launches safety management system initiative Gama Aviation has enhanced its safety and security capabilities with the introduction of a new SMS initiative in advance of business aviation regulatory requirements. The company says that its team operates services in some of the world’s most challenging locations and environments, and that this requires on-going investment in enabling its employees to deliver a supportive and even safer operational environment for its customers. One of the first of these new initiatives is the launch of Gama’s ‘safety in numbers’ campaign, which highlights ten areas of safety, operational and environmental risk. “Meeting and exceeding our business aviation regulatory requirements has been an integral part of our business since Gama Aviation began operating nearly 30 years ago,” says Hannah Smith, safety manager. “Our ‘safety in numbers’ campaign ensures everyone in the Gama team can respond to the challenges that face us all in the industry and further demonstrates our commitment to enhancing our safety culture in particular. The campaign is one way to ensure our team understand the risks that exist in our industry, so that we can support them to make the smartest and safest decisions.” Meanwhile, Gama has been approved for all-weather winter operations to Chambery-Savoie airport. Its Falcon 2000 and Challenger 604 aircraft and flight crew are now able to reduce many of the limiting weather factors usually associated with flights to and from this gateway to numerous Alpine ski resorts, including Courcheval,

It is based at Farnborough, along with a number of the company’s charter aircraft, including Learjet 45, Learjet 60XR, Hawker 800 and 1000 as well as a Challenger 604 types. “Chambery airport has long been a favourite for our clients wanting the best access to the ski slopes during the busy winter season,” says Paul Cremer, commercial manager. “With our Falcon 2000 and Challenger 604 wide-bodied

this popular destination for our winter sports customers.” Over the course of the past two months Gama has also added an Embraer Legacy 600 and a Challenger 604 to its UAE-based charter fleet and an Embraer Legacy 650, Hawker 800XP and vip Boeing 737 to its growing management fleet in the region. Although Gama is firmly established at Sharjah International Airport, with an additional base in Dubai, this major fleet growth marks the company’s expansion into the UAE’s capital, Abu Dhabi.
Central European business jet operator Grossmann Jet Service has promoted Lada Ouhrabkova to the newly-created role of chief operating officer. Ouhrabkova currently holds the position of flight operations and training manager deputy with GJS, and will now be responsible for maintaining the safe and efficient operation of the Embraer Legacy 600 and Hawker 900 XP aircraft currently in the fleet, as well as managing the introduction of new aircraft as the company grows. She will report to ceo Dagmar Grossmann and manage the Six Sigma certified team members who will be helping her to deliver the high standards of safety and security the regulators expect. Grossman says: “The position of coo is a new one for GJS and it was vital we appointed someone who understands every element of our business. Lada is an experienced aviation operator and I believe she will guide the team to deliver even higher standards of performance.’’ Ouhrabkova studies as an aviation engineer at Czech Technical University before joining GJS in 2010.

Overall FBO rankings 1
Recent years have seen major investments in FBO facilities around Europe and the Middle East, and these exciting developments show no signs of slowing down. Two of these purpose-built full service facilities have already been delighting aircraft operators and passengers, and have finished in the top spots of this, our 21st annual survey of FBO facilities. Rizon Jet at Biggin Hill and DhabiJet at Al Bateen epitomise the standards of facilities and service level which customers are coming to expect. Chains have fared well again in our survey, with Jet Aviation taking four places in the top 25, and Signature Flight Support three. All three of the FBOs at Nice Côte d’Azur feature in the list, with Swissport scoring especially highly to take third place. Single locations with dedicated teams have once again excelled, as Inflite at Stansted maintains its status as a top five facility and Grafair at Bromma arriving back in the top ten. Overall, scores dipped slightly this year, as only five FBOs achieved an overall score of more than eight marks, compared with eight facilities last year. In this feature we report on some of the highest ranking companies, run through the latest news from FBOs and handlers, and provide our usual full survey of contact information and facilities. We have included all those who responded to our many requests to update and confirm their information. Further details about these and all the other handlers throughout Europe, Russia, Middle East and Africa can be found online at www.handbook.aero.

Rizon reaps rewards from facility built with customers in mind Achieving top spot in the EBAN FBO survey is something to be proud of. Doing so after just a year of operation is testament to the hard work of the entire team at Rizon Jet UK’s London Biggin Hill facility, headed by UK FBO director Allan McGreal. Along with BACA’s best handler/ FBO award in October, the company feels it is receiving the first tangible comment from its peers on how it has progressed since start-up, from little more than a construction site early in 2011 to a fully operational and

successfully integrated FBO, vip terminal and maintenance facility. Month on month the business has been in growth and, despite the early teething problems suffered by many a business in its infancy, Rizon Jet says it has managed to stay faithful to its original plans. Aiming to deliver something different, the company designed and constructed a facility with customer experience in mind from start to finish, taking all of the elements missing from its previous experience in FBOs and maintenance hangars and installing them in the new project. The idea was to build a more familiar environment so that clients would being able to quickly relax. Next came the task of finding the people that would make it all work. Rizon Jet says it wanted an eclectic mix of talent and to draw on a wide range of skill and experience from which to build its fraternity. “We struck gold and found some special people, from front of house ambassadors, concierge, operations coordinators and ramp controllers, we had a mix of people able to build a capable operation from scratch,” says ceo Capt Hassan Al-Mousawi. This first full year of operations was an important milestone too for founder Ghanim Bin Saad Al Saad, the culmination of a vision long held. “We knew we had a number of priorities in our first year but to deliver an internationally acclaimed facility ranked very highly on the list,” adds Al-Mousawi. Rizon Jet increased the challenge still further by establishing two facilities simultaneously, the other at Doha, Qatar. Biggin Hill is the home of the UK operation and the company says that challenges were many and varied. Among these was how to lift a new business aviation name into the marketplace, with new facility, new staff, no customers and starting a business in the teeth of recession, in a
competitive airport that already had two well-regarded resident FBOs. AlMousawi believes that the essential mantra is always to avoid being passive and always to add to the customer experience. Disregarding the declining market, Rizon Jet set out to educate people in how its business was different. The international PA, for example, needed to understand how using the Rizon Jet facility during a principal’s journey would be a productive and positive experience. Experienced crews and operators needed to be educated on how the new business could not only add previously missing services but, as a new and evolving organisation, changes could be made to suit the client. An exciting development has been greater use of the facilities by clients of Rizon Jet’s based operators. Overall, McGreal expects to continue the successes of 2012 into this year, but points out that increasing traffic brings the need to ensure it can be accommodated, something that will always be a part

of its forward planning. Al-Mousawi adds: “Following up the BACA award with the coveted EBAN FBO survey top ranking is nothing short of fantastic and puts the icing on the cake. The challenge this survey brings is to be able to sustain the quality of service and the depth of care and attention our customers should expect. The survey examines the business more rigorously than you would expect. “We are so grateful to all who commented on the service we provide. Both awards come from important sections of our industry and add enormous weight to our credibility, which is something we treasure. I would like thank our entire team at Biggin Hill for these great achievements.”

How the FBO Feedback system works EBAN keeps track of every business jet, business twin and turbine helicopter in Europe, Russia, the Middle East and Africa, and builds its distribution database from individuals responsible for all these aircraft. Voting in the annual FBO Feedback survey is strictly restricted to this unique and vauable list of professionals. Each is able to use the survey form on the magazine mailer sheets throughout the second half of the year, or can vote online at any time through their own secure web page. Voters are excluded from ranking their own company’s facilities. Over 1,700 FBOs, handlers and agents are offered on the voting forms, and readers can vote for as many or as few as they like. A rating out of nine is given for facilities, service, staff and value, from which an average is taken. To minimise statistical aberrations only those facilities receiving at least point seven of one per cent of the total number of votes cast is included in our final league table. Many thanks to all those chief pilots, ops managers and aircraft owners who took the time to complete the survey – your votes have created a fascinating snapshot of FBO standards.

Last year ended very well for Al Bateen Executive airport and its FBO operator DhabiJet, placed second in our survey by a narrow margin. A 40 per cent increase in private flights compared to 2011 saw the ramp at its busiest since it became exclusively dedicated to private aviation. “For DhabiJet to be nominated the second best FBO in the EMEA region is one challenge, but to remain focused on constantly delivering a better level of service under a highly demanding environment is another,” says senior FBO manager Marios Belidis. “DhabiJet was founded in March 2011 and I believe that a great team spirit along with good entrepreneurial skills is key to overcoming the biggest challenges and creating a cloud of positive energy every morning to motivate the team that subsequently gets reflected to customers,” Belidis says. “At DhabiJet, we adapt to each customer’s demands and we try to reach a level of friendship with them.” Over the past year, DhabiJet has seen a number of developments with staff kitted out in new, branded uniforms and Executive Gate Gourmet opening a huge kitchen facility to cater all flights. An MOU for aircraft cleaning services has been signed with Falcon Aviation and the FBO’s crew lounge has been shifted airside to meet crew needs. “This year the challenge will be to further increase our visiting flight movements following the opening of Al Maktoum International airport and to encourage more customers to base their aircraft at Al Bateen,” Belidis says, adding that he expects to see more fuel stops as the Asian business aviation market inflates quickly. “Last year we saw an increase in fuel stops from customers emerging from India and China.” Future plans include commercial opportunities such as leasing additional hangar spaces, retail shops, leasing of serviced offices and storage spaces.

FBO news in brief ■
Jet Aviation is now operating out of Berlin Schönefeld, providing FBO services at Schönefeld and Tegel airports. “As a major international hub and a common point of entry to central Europe, Berlin is a key location for our customers,” says Frank Kusserow, director of FBO services. “Many customers fly between Berlin, Dusseldorf and our other worldwide FBOs, and they can now benefit from having the same handler.” ■
Acciona Airport Services is to support Jet Aviation with ground services and equipment at both airports.
Air BP. It’s the people on the ground who keep you in the air.
■ Based at Ronaldsway Airport in the Isle of Man, Island Aviation and Travel’s purpose built GA facility with vip conference area is due for completion at the end of 2013. ■ A busy week for the World Economic Forum annual meeting at Davos-Klosters in January saw ExecuJet Aviation Group’s FBO at Zurich airport handling more than 300 movements, including a high proportion of ultra long range jets. FBO manager Viviane Sigg says: “The meeting is the ultimate test for an FBO. Not only do we have to handle a huge spike in aircraft movements, but the passengers are at the top of the global ‘A-list’. There is simply no scope for error.”
It’s not just the quality of our fuel that provides reassurance to our customer, it’s also the dedication of our people both in the office and at the airfield. Friendly atmosphere puts Roskilde in seventh heaven Roskilde Executive Handling is delighted to have come from nowhere to appear in an enviable seventh place. FBO manager Berit Joergensen (above) explains that offering customers a choice of premium and light handling is a strategy that appears to work. “In 2012 we actually had more premium handling flights than in 2011,” she says. “We have succeeded in having the same amount of customers even though there has been and still is some kind of economic crisis in this business, but we also see that more and more of our customers choose the premium product.”
Joergensen believes that the Copenhagen airport-based facility is known for its excellent and friendly service: “That is for sure one of the things we got good rankings for. Hosting is one of our buzz words and we don’t treat customers as customers, but as our guests – this is very important.” Size matters too and, in this case, the small airport delivers flexibility with speedy arrivals and departures. Joergensen adds: “The crew lounge is in close proximity with our offices and the pilots really like this, sometimes they sit in our office and drink coffee and chat instead of sitting in the crew lounge.”

CHARTER BROKER NEWS... Air Partner aids Range Rover launch Air Partner has completed a support contract for the global launch of Land Rover’s all-new Range Rover car, in conjunction with marketing services agency P&MM. The contract saw Air Partner fly 7,058 car dealers from more than 53 countries around the world to Marrakech in Morocco. The Airbus A319 aircraft were liveried with the Range Rover logo inside and out, including branded seating, menus and napkins.
Flaps reports strong book sales Flaps International is celebrating ten years of independent business this year, and has received a typically lighthearted endorse-ment from one of its regular clients, TV motoring pundit Jeremy Clarkson: “I like flying with Flaps. The planes are punctual and not once has any of them ever crashed. That, to me, is important.” Director Pete Lynch Williams says that the book Waking Sienna (pictured), which tells the company story so far, is selling well and is available from online bookshops.
Zela adds to its team Zela Aviation has appointed Neill Huston to focus on ACMI activity as well as aircraft remarketing. Huston has previously held positions as an aircraft broker at Hunt & Palmer and AirTrader Consulting. His last role prior to joining Zela was commercial director at Strategic Airlines Luxembourg where he was heavily involved in the start-up of the airline. Andreas Christodoulides, chairman, says: “We are very pleased to welcome Neill to our growing organisation and his vast experience will strengthen our already strong and dynamic team.”
African Cup of Nations spikes demand As the African Cup of Nations kicked off in South Africa, aircraft charters have been on the increase as the competing nations look to maximise the efficiency of their logistics around the country during the three week competition, reports Air Charter Service. Lyndee du Toit, director of ACS’s Africa office, explains why: “Some of the stadia are almost 900 miles apart, so the only sensible method of transport is to fly. The situation is very much reminiscent of the last World Cup when we had probably our busiest period ever.”

Relocation of Madrid business aviation hub offers benefits to operators With the decision by the Spanish airport authority to close Torrejon airport to business aviation, Gestair is to provide FBO services at Madrid-Barajas airport where all traffic will now operate. Universal Aviation Spain, which is also relocating its Madrid headquarters there, points out that it is also closer to the city. ACS excited about Kazakhstan
Ground ACE
Following the opening of its aircraft charter business in Kazakhstan, Chris Leach (pictured), chairman of the Air Charter Service group, is excited about the growth in the aircraft charter market in the country. “We believe that the Kazakh aircraft charter market will show strong growth over the next few years due to its natural resources, the resulting investment in the region and the sheer size of the country,” he says. Leach is not only targeting the nation’s emerging super rich, who already have a growing taste for private aviation, but looking to provide a quality service for global customers who require aircraft charter services in the region: “Along with private aviation, there will be many foreign companies moving personnel and equipment around the country.”

South Africa is firmly established as a business aviation centre with international FBO brands such as ExecuJet having a strong presence, yet in 2012 more executive aircraft were purchased in Nigeria than the southern region. While growth in Sub-Saharan business aviation activity is welcomed, there remains an absence of infrastructure to support expansion. Few FBOs exist to handle private jets – passengers often have to pass through customs and security used by scheduled carriers, and handling can be less than refined. Yet there is huge potential and a number of African companies are beginning to exploit this. In December, Angola’s BestFly opened its own FBO at Luanda International airport, while in 2011, at Lagos’ Murtala Mohammed airport, Evergreen Apple Nigeria (EAN) established the first fully integrated FBO and MRO facility in
Nigeria with plans to roll out more across the continent. Such success stories demonstrate demand for these services, and that it can be done, but not without the right investment, local government support and a lot of determination. Nuno Pereira, BestFly md, says one of the greatest challenges is institutional: “It took us almost two years to make official entities aware of and understand the advantages of a facility like our FBO for the local economy.” He adds that BestFly has to thank Angola’s minister of transport for understanding the value the FBO brings. The African Business Aviation Association (AfBAA) was launched in May 2011. AfBAA’s first White Paper published in January 2013 states that there is a need to increase the number of FBOs and facilities for private jets and that the first hurdle is to convince airport authorities about the benefits of identifying business
aviation and its support services as a market sector they should embrace. It argues that FBOs will create jobs and support inward investment. Yet this in itself brings its own challenges, as Pereira says: “Manpower is a big challenge; following 40 years of war where education was not always a priority, there is a lack of qualified people.” Pereira also stresses that African FBO companies cannot survive alone in a globalised world, which is why BestFly became a founding member of AfBAA. Working with other business aviation experts can only be advantageous and BestFly has worked closely with ExecuJet’s South African md Ettore Poggi and his team to develop its offering. Likewise EAN, also an AfBAA member, partnered with Banyan Air Service in Florida, USA, in a skill sharing agreement. Segun Demuren, ceo, says: “We are a fledgling business and the first in the market to respond
By Jane Stanbury Emerald Media
to the needs of a growing business aviation fraternity. We are delighted to start sharing knowledge and resources with Banyan.” Through close collaboration, Demuren anticipates that EAN will improve its systems and processes which will refine its service offering. EAN’s team of over 40 is as varied as the services it provides, with a good mix of various Nigerian ethnicities complemented by employees from Europe and North America. African pan-continental FBO structural development faces many challenges but with visionaries such as Demuren and Pereira, active lobbying associations such as AfBAA and the dynamism of the African continent supporting activity, this time next year a number of African FBOs could be contenders for places in the annual EBAN survey.
