ABOUT THE EUROPEAN RAIL TIMETABLE
What is the European Rail Timetable?
When should I use the International section?
The European Rail Timetable is a concise guide to rail and ferry schedules throughout Europe, and also includes selected areas of the world outside Europe. Needless to say, it cannot be comprehensive (it would run into thousands of pages), but through our knowledge and experience, together with valuable feedback from our readers, we can select those services which we believe will satisfy the needs of most travellers.
The rail tables are divided into two sections - International (Tables 9 to 99) and Country by Country (Tables 100 upwards). For some international services between adjacent countries (for example Stockholm - Oslo or Hamburg Århus) it is necessary to use the relevant Country tables - the index or maps will guide you. Local trains which cross international frontiers will usually only be found in the Country sections. Some international trains also carry passengers internally within each country and will therefore be found in the Country tables as well as the International section. Some services are primarily for international travel and will therefore only be found in the International section - this includes Eurostar trains (London - Paris/Brussels) and Thalys services (Paris - Brussels - Amsterdam/ Köln), as well as certain long-distance night trains.
When do the services change? There is a major annual timetable change in mid-December affecting almost all European countries, with many countries having a second change in midJune. There are, of course, exceptions. For example, the British summer timetable starts in late May, Sweden changes again in mid-August, whilst Russia and the other CIS countries have their main change at the end of May. Many holiday areas also have separate timetables for the high-summer period, particularly areas of France and Italy. In fact, changes can happen at any time of year, and railways issue amendments either on set dates or as and when necessary. Engineering work also causes frequent changes, and shipping schedules can change at any time.
How are the trains selected for inclusion? People travel for many reasons, whether for leisure, business, sightseeing, visiting friends or relations, or just for the fun of it, and there are no hard and fast rules for selecting the services that we show. Naturally, major towns and inter-city services are shown as a matter of course, but the level of smaller places and local trains shown will depend on the country and even the area. It’s surprising just how many minor lines we manage to squeeze in! Generally we will show a greater number of local trains in areas which are popular tourist destinations or where other services are sparse. It is not possible to show suburban trains within cities or conurbations, or most outer-suburban routes to places close to large cities. However, where there are places of particular interest or importance in this category we do try to show brief details of frequency and journey time.
What about places outside Europe? The European Rail Timetable includes the whole of Turkey and Russia. Furthermore, our Beyond Europe section at the back of each edition features timetables from different areas of the world each month. Eight areas are featured, each appearing at least twice a year. The areas covered are India, South East Asia, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, South America, North America, South Korea, Africa and the Middle East. Details of when each region appears will be found in the introduction of the Beyond Europe section. Please note that we include all of the latest Beyond Europe sections in our expanded Winter and Summer editions.
What else does it contain? A summary of international sleeper services will be found on page 35, listing types of accommodation, operators and facilities on board. We also include a summary of European rail passes (see the list of contents on page 3 for its current location) with a more detailed version appearing in our expanded Summer and Winter editions. Each month a different rail journey is described in our Route of the Month feature, written by our regular travel correspondents, Nicky Gardner and Susanne Kries. Our timetables and other products may be purchased from our website www.europeanrailtimetable.eu.

TRAVEL INFORMATION The following is designed to be an outline guide to travelling around Europe by train. For further details of types of accommodation available, catering, supplements etc., see the introduction to each country.
BUYING YOUR TICKET Train tickets must be purchased before travelling, either from travel agents or at the station ticket office (or machine). Where a station has neither a ticket office nor a ticket machine, the ticket may usually be purchased on the train. Tickets which are not dated when purchased (for example in France and Italy) must be validated before travel in one of the machines at the entrance to the platform. In certain Eastern European countries foreign nationals may have to buy international rail tickets at the office of the state tourist board concerned and not at the railway station. The tickets can sometimes only be purchased in western currency and buying tickets can take a long time. Most countries in Europe offer two classes of rail accommodation, usually 1st and 2nd class. 1st class is more comfortable and therefore more expensive than 2nd class. Local trains are often 2nd class only. In Southern and Eastern Europe, 1st class travel is advisable for visitors as fares are reasonable and 2nd class can be very overcrowded.
RESERVATIONS Many express trains in Europe are restricted to passengers holding advance seat reservations, particularly in France, Italy, Sweden and Spain. This is indicated by the symbol R in the tables, or by notes in the introduction to each country. All TGV, Eurostar and Thalys trains require advance reservation, as do all long-distance trains in Spain. Reservations can usually be made up to two months in advance. A small fee is charged, but where a supplement is payable the reservation fee is often included. Reservations can often be made on other long-distance services and this is recommended at busy times.
SUPPLEMENTS Many countries have faster train services for which an extra charge is made. This supplement is payable when the ticket is purchased and often includes the price of a seat reservation. The supplement can sometimes be paid on the train, but usually at extra cost. The introduction to each country gives further information. On certain high-speed services, the first class fare includes the provision of a meal.
RAIL PASSES Passes are available which give unlimited travel on most trains in a given area. These range from Interrail and Eurail passes which cover most of Europe for up to one month, to local passes which cover limited areas for one day. Further details of Interrail and Eurail passes appear elsewhere in this edition, and a special feature on rail passes appears in the twice-yearly Independent Travellers Edition.
FINDING YOUR TRAIN At most stations departures are listed on large paper sheets (often yellow), and / or on electronic departure indicators. These list trains by departure, giving principal stops, and indicate from which platform they leave. On each platform of principal European stations, a display board can be found giving details of the main trains calling at that platform. This includes the location of individual coaches, together with their destinations and the type of accommodation provided. A sign may be carried on the side of the carriage indicating the train name, principal stops and destination and a label or sign near the door will indicate the number allocated to the carriage, which is shown on reservation tickets. 1st class accommodation is usually indicated by a yellow band above the windows and doors and/or a figure ‘1’ near the door or on the windows A sign above the compartment door will indicate seat numbers and which seats are reserved. In non-compartment trains, reserved seats have labels on their headrests. In some countries reserved seats are not marked and occupants will be asked to move when the passenger who has reserved the seat boards the train.
LUGGAGE & BICYCLES Luggage may be registered at many larger stations and sent separately by rail to your destination. In some countries, bicycles may also be registered in advance and certain local and some express trains will convey bicycles (there may be a charge). The relevant railways will advise exact details on request.
s CATERING u Many high-quality and long-distance trains in Europe have restaurant cars serving full meals, usually with waiter service. An at-seat service may also be provided to passengers in first class accommodation. Such trains are identified with the symbol s in the tables. Full meals may only be available at set times, sometimes with separate sittings, and may only be available to passengers holding first class tickets. However, the restaurant car is often supplemented by a counter or trolley service offering light snacks and drinks. Other types of catering are shown with the symbol u. This varies from a selfservice buffet car serving light meals (sometimes called bistro or café) to a trolley which is wheeled through the train, serving drinks and light refreshments. Where possible, the introduction to each country gives further information on the level of catering to be expected on particular types of train.
SLEEPING CARS
q
Sleeping cars are indicated by the symobol q in the tables. Standard sleeping car types have bedroom style compartments with limited washing facilities and full bedding. Toilets are located at one or both ends of the coach. An attendant travels with each car or pair of cars and will serve drinks, snacks and breakfast at an extra charge. 1st class sleeping compartments have one or two berths (in Britain and Norway, and in older Swedish sleeping cars, two berth compartments require only 2nd class tickets) and 2nd class compartments have three berths. Some trains convey special T2 cabins, shown as q (T2) in the tables, with one berth in 1st class and two berths in 2nd class. Compartments are allocated for occupation exclusively by men or by women except when married couples or families occupy all berths. Children travelling alone, or who cannot be accommodated in the same compartment as their family, are placed in women’s compartments. In Russia and other countries of the CIS, however, berths are allocated in strict order of booking and men and women often share the same compartments. Some trains have communicating doors between sleeping compartments which can be opened to create a larger room if both compartments are occupied by the same family group. Berths can be reserved up to 2 months (3 months on certain trains) before the date of travel and early reservation is recommended as space is limited, especially on French ski trains and in Eastern Europe. Berths must be claimed within 15 minutes of boarding the train or they may be resold.
HOTEL TRAINS High quality overnight trains, often referred to as Hotel trains, run on a selection of national and international routes. The facilities are of a higher standard than those offered in conventional sleeping cars, and special fares are payable. The trains fall into the following categories: ÖBB nightjet : Many night trains radiating from Germany and Austria, are operated by Austrian Railways and are branded ÖBB nightjet. They operate on 17 routes serving four countries and all convey sleeping-car, couchette and seating accommodation. Standard sleeping-car compartments can be configured with one, two or three berths and have a washbasin (with toiletries provided). Deluxe sleeping-car compartments can also be configured with one, two or three berths and have an en-suite washroom with WC, washbasin and shower (shower gel and towels are provided). The sleeping-car fare includes a welcome drink, a bottle of water, a newspaper and a full breakfast served in the morning (including free hot drink refills). Four and six berth couchettes are available, the price of which includes a bottle of water and a small breakfast. Women only, family and wheelchair couchette compartments are provided. 2nd class seating cars (with six seat compartments) are also conveyed. Reservation is compulsory in all categories of accommodation and special all-inclusive fares are available. Please note that Interrail and Eurail pass holders must pay a special pass holders fare. Trenhotel (Spain). These Talgo-type trains run on the international routes from Madrid to Lisboa and from Irún / Hendaye to Lisboa. They also operate on internal routes within Spain, from Barcelona to A Coruña, Granada and Vigo, and from Madrid to A Coruña, Ferrol and Pontevedra. The highest class of accommodation is Gran Clase, which has shower and toilet facilities in each compartment and can be used for single or double occupancy. Compartments with showers are also available on some domestic overnight services in Sweden and Italy, and on certain other international routes as indicated on our international overnight services summary on page 35.
COUCHETTES
r
Couchettes (r) are a more basic form of overnight accommodation consisting of simple bunk beds with a sheet, blanket and pillow. The couchettes are converted from ordinary seating cars for the night, and there are usually 4 berths per compartment in 1st class, 6 berths in 2nd class. On certain trains (e.g. in Austria and Italy), 4 berth compartments are available to 2nd class passengers, at a higher supplement. Washing and toilet facilities are provided at the ends of each coach. Men and women are booked into the same compartments and are expected to sleep in daytime clothes. A small number of trains in Germany, however, have women-only couchette compartments.
INTERNATIONAL OVERNIGHT SERVICES A summary of international overnight services will be found on page 35 which specifies the various types of accommodation and catering provided on each individual service (including details of the operator).
CAR-SLEEPERS Trains which convey motor cars operate throughout much of Europe and are shown in Table 1 for international services and Table 2 for other services. The motor cars are conveyed in special wagons while passengers travel in sleeping cars or couchettes, usually (but not always) in the same train.
WHEELCHAIR ACCESS i Most main-line domestic and international trains, together with an increasing number of local trains, are specially equipped to accommodate passengers in wheelchairs. Access ramps are available at many stations and some trains are fitted with special lifts. These trains have at least one wheelchair space, and are equipped with accessible toilets. Most railways publish guides to accessibility, and many countries provide dedicated staff to assist disabled travellers. Wheelchair users normally need to reserve in advance, stating their requirements.
Please note that the catering shown may not be available throughout the journey and may be suspended or altered at weekends or on holidays. 10

Tickets:
A nationwide smartcard system called OV-chipkaart is used for all public transport in the Netherlands. Personalised and anonymous cards are available ( 7.50) which can be loaded and topped up with travel credit. Disposable single use cards can also be purchased from ticket machines and ticket offices for full fare single / return journeys and day tickets (a 1 supplement is payable for single use cards). You must always check-in and check-out your OV-chipkaart for each journey. Alternatively, e-tickets for full fare single and return journeys may be purchased on-line and printed yourself.
Supplements: A supplement is payable for journeys on Intercity direct services (except for local journeys Amsterdam - Schiphol and Rotterdam - Breda), also for internal journeys on ICE trains between Amsterdam and Arnhem. In both cases the single journey supplement is 2.30. Supplements may be purchased from special Supplement Pillars (using your OV-chipkaart) or from ticket machines.

ITALY
ITALY Operator: Services:
Services are operated by Trenitalia, a division of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane S.p.a. (FS), unless otherwise noted: www.trenitalia.com. Trenord is a joint venture between Trenitalia and Ferrovie Nord Milano (LeNord) that operates local services, mainly in the Lombardia region: www.trenord.it. Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori (NTV) is an open-access operator providing alternative services over the high-speed network: www.italotreno.it. All trains convey First and Second classes of travel unless otherwise shown by a figure "2" at the top of the column, or in a note in the Table heading. Four classes of accommodation is available on Frecciarossa (FR) services: Executive, Business, Premium and Standard class. Overnight sleeping car (q) or couchette (r) trains do not necessarily convey seating accommodation or may convey only second class seats - refer to individual footnotes. Excelsior sleeping cars offer en-suite facilities. Descriptions of sleeping and couchette cars appear on page 10. Refreshment services (s or u) where known, may only be available for part of the journey, and may be added to or taken away from trains during the currency of the timetable.
Train Categories: There are 9 categories of express train: EC EuroCity international express; supplement payable. EN EuroNight international night express. FA Frecciargento tilting trains used on both high-speed and traditional lines. FB Frecciabianca fast premium fare services using traditional lines. FR Frecciarossa fast premium fare services using high-speed lines. IC InterCity internal day express; supplement payable. Timings: Tickets: Reservations: Supplements
Timings have been compiled from the latest information received. Minor changes are expected from June 10. In particular, days and dates of running are subject to alteration. Trains may be cancelled or altered at holiday times – for public holiday dates see page 4. Some international trains are not shown in this section; these include night services from Austria, France and Germany – see International pages. Trains and international buses operating via Tarvisio are shown in Table 88. Tickets must be date-stamped by the holder before boarding the train using the self-service validating machines – this applies to all tickets except passes. Reservations are compulsory for all journeys by services for which a train category ( EC, EN, FA, FB, FR, IC, ICN, RJ ) is shown in the timing column and passengers boarding without a prior reservation may be surcharged. Reservations for sleeping and couchette car accommodation on domestic night trains are valid only when presented with personal identification. ITA services are ‘global’ price trains with compulsory reservation. Supplements are calculated according to class of travel and total distance travelled (minimum 10km, maximum 3000km), and are payable on all EC and IC trains, regardless of the number of changes of train. A higher fare (including supplement) is payable for travel by FA, FB and FR trains. Some trains are only available to passengers holding long distance tickets and the restrictions applying to these are noted in the tables.

BULGARIA RAIL TRAVEL
See Tables 1500 - 1560. Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ) www.bdz.bg run on a network of a little over 4,000 km, the principal lines of which link the capital Sofia with the Black Sea resorts of Burgas and Varna. Trains are often crowded and reservations are recommended for long-distance travel (and are obligatory for certain express trains). Signs at stations are in Cyrillic, although the website does have an English version. BDZ has one narrow gauge line, running 125 km from Septemvri to Dobrinishte, serving en route the winter resort town of Bansko. Timings for this (very slow) line are in Table 1510. The National Railway Museum is in a former railway station in the outskirts of Ruse (see link on http://fan.bdz.bg). There is little else in the form of heritage lines, although there are occasional steam specials, and Plovdiv has a 600mm gauge Children's Railway (formerly Pioneer Railway).
As with many countries in this listing, it is possible to book tickets online (having first set up an account) and to print tickets at home. Although Praha airport is not rail connected, the Airport Express (AE) bus between the airport and Praha hlavnõÂ is included in CÏD's ticket system so it is possible to print your own ticket from the airport to rail stations in the Czech Republic - very handy for a quick getaway and avoiding ticket office queues!
HERITAGE LINES
Heritage operations mainly consist of special trains on parts of the Czech rail system, and these are shown in CÏD's own timetable (some in a special section at the end, listed online as ZVL). Many of these trains are run by KZÏC (www.kzc.cz) with heritage diesel railcars or locos, mainly on summer weekends. A short 30 minute trip from Praha hlavnõ is possible on 67 at 0854, 1054, 1254 and 1454 over the scenic so-called Prague Semmering line to Praha-ZlicÏ õ n, returning at 0934, 1134, 1334, 1534 (or by tram from the adjacent terminus). Operated by KZÏC, it is included in the Prague public transport tariff. Another popular line is the scenic PosaÂzavsky Pacifik line from Praha to CÏercÏ any via Vrane nad Vltavou. As well as CÏD local trains, KZÏC runs heritage journeys in summer (Apr. to Oct.) from Praha to CÏercÏ any at 07386 and 10337, returning at 12036 and 17357. CÏD's only narrow gauge line is also worth a mention, running to the village of Osoblaha close to the Polish border - see Table 1169 for brief details. The principal railway museum is at LuzÏ na u Rakovnika, 64 km from Praha (Table 1105), open 67 Apr. to Oct. (2±7 June - Aug). Steam trips operate from LuzÏ na on certain dates, notably on 6 in July and August on the 17 km line to KolesÏ ovice, leaving at 0952 and 1352. The museum's website is www.cdmuzeum.cz - click on the CÏD Nostalgie link for a document listing many heritage events and trips throughout the year. The National Technical Museum also has a railway depository in Chomutov, open 4±7 Mar. 30 - Oct. 28. www.muzeum-chomutov.cz

CROATIA RAIL TRAVEL
See Tables 1300 - 1359. National railway company is Hrvatske ZÏeljeznice (HZÏ) www.hzpp.hr. The network is centered on the capital Zagreb, but services are generally infrequent, even on the main lines to Rijeka and Split. The Zagreb to Split line (Table 1330) is particularly scenic; the day trains on this line are operated by modern diesel units, with compulsory reservation. Sadly, connections from Knin to Zadar are no longer by train but provided by bus, although the route is still considered part of the rail network for ticketing purposes. Buses along the coast from Split to PlocÏ e and Dubrovnik are, however, privately operated - brief details are given in Table 1325. The Croatian Railway Museum consists of an outdoor collection of exhibits in Zagreb, accessed from Ulica grada Vukovara 47, with limited opening hours Wednesday to Saturday (see http://muzej-en.hzinfra.hr).
CZECH REPUBLIC RAIL TRAVEL
See Tables 1100 - 1169. National rail company is CÏeske DraÂhy (CÏD) (www.cd.cz), whilst the railway infrastructure is administered by SZÏDC (www.szdc.cz). An extensive network of over 9,000 km is operated, with many branch lines serving towns and villages away from the main lines, making it possible to visit almost anywhere by rail. If you like to explore on slow, winding, country branch lines, this is definitely a country to visit. With a rail pass or day ticket you can hop on and off trains at will, since the only trains requiring advance reservation are the handful of SC (SuperCity) Pendolino trains, which run mainly on the Praha - Ostrava route (reservation fee varies up to a maximum of CZK 250). Other high-quality trains are classified IC, EC or Ex, whilst Railjet trains also run on the Praha - Wien axis (whilst Railjet is an Austrian train type, there are also some in the colours of Czech Railways). Regular fast trains are classified R (for rychlõ k) or Rx and are shown in our tables with just the train number. Seats can be reserved on all of these train types (recommended at busy times), and many convey buffet cars. Semi-fast trains are Sp or spesÏ ny . Local trains, which can be very slow, are Os or osobny . Private operators compete with CÏD on several major routes, principally Regiojet from Praha to Ostrava, Bratislava, KosÏ ice and Wien, and Leo Express to Ostrava and KosÏ ice. Tickets are not interchangeable with those of CÏD. Some branch lines are also operated by private companies. In Praha, most services are concentrated on the main station Praha hlavnõ , though some services of a more local nature leave from the nearby Masarykovo station (10 minutes walk). While reconstruction work is being carried out trains to Rakovnik (Table 1105) are leaving from BubnyVltavska . HolesÏ ovice station has been of less importance since 2008 when a new line opened enabling all through trains to serve hlavnõ station. 654
This privately operated narrow gauge railway runs from JindrÏ ichuÊ v Hradec (Table 1135) for 33 km to the small town of Nova BystrÏ ice, close to the Austrian border. A steam hauled train with buffet runs in summer. For timings see Table 1169. www.jhmd.cz JHMD also operates a second narrow gauge line from JindrÏ ichuÊ v Hradec, which runs for 46 km in a northerly direction to ObratanÏ (which is also served by a local CÏD line from TaÂbor to Hornõ Cerekev). Trains run approximately every two hours, taking around 90 minutes for the journey. Aimed at locals rather than tourists, the line nevertheless provides plenty of atmosphere for those who relish slow local lines.
DENMARK RAIL TRAVEL
See Tables 700 - 728. Operator is Danske Statsbaner (DSB) www.dsb.dk. There are also some independent lines, and certain former DSB services in Jutland are now operated by private company ArrivaTog www.arriva.dk. See page 344 for further information. Principal trains linking Kùbenhavn with the rest of Denmark are classified InterCity (IC) and InterCityLyn (Lyn), travelling at up to 200 km/h. Reservations are recommended but not compulsory, and can be made by telephone W 70 13 14 15. Travel from Sjñlland (the island on which Kùbenhavn sits) to the rest of the country (Fyn and Jylland) is by way of the impressive 18 km Great Belt Fixed Link (Storebñlt), consisting of a bridge and a tunnel, with an island inbetween. Prior to 1997 trains were conveyed on board ferries to make the crossing. On the other side of Kùbenhavn, the equally impressive 16 km éresund Bridge, opened in 2000, links the city with Malmù in Sweden, with a frequent rail service which also serves Kùbenhavn's Kastrup Airport en route. The airport is also linked to the city by metro. Trains to Germany via the Fugleflugtslinie still need to go on board ferries between Rùdby and Puttgarden, but there are plans for a bridge here too. Denmark's railway museum is situated in Odense, adjacent to the railway station and open all year. www.jernbanemuseet.dk
MUSEUMSBANEN MARIBO-BANDHOLM
Starting at Maribo on the privately operated Nykùbing to Nakskov line (see footnote in Table 720), this short museum line in the south of Denmark heads 8 km north to Bandholm. After pausing for 20 minutes at Bandholm station, where the railway is based, the train continues for a further 400 metres to a platform adjacent to the harbour. www.museumsbanan.dk Trains run 7 June 24 - Aug. 26 (also 3 July 4 - Aug. 8, 4 July 5 - Aug. 9, also May 27, Oct. 17, 18). Trains are steam hauled on certain dates. ................................
