NEWSLINES

What’s new this month WELCOME Welcome to the expanded Winter 2017/2018 edition of the European Rail Timetable which contains new schedules for most European countries valid from December 10. We have included updated timings for most trains but, as is often the case in the Winter edition, only partial information was available for certain countries as we went to press. Readers are therefore advised to check individual country headings to confirm the validity of the timings shown. Please also be aware that many tables have been compiled using advance data which is sometimes liable to change and so readers are advised to check timings before travelling. Of course, all of our tables will be rechecked and updated over the coming weeks as schedules are confirmed. As well as updates to our regular European pages, this edition includes the latest versions of all eight Beyond Europe sections that normally only appear in selected editions throughout the year. Our special Rail Extra feature, which contains useful transport information on a country by country basis (including details of many popular tourist railways), will be found on pages 653 to 664.

ROUTE OF THE MONTH Lake Constance (or Bodensee in German) is surrounded by local rail routes, German on the north side, Swiss along the southern shore and a short stretch within Austria at its eastern extremity. Our regular travel correspondents, Nicky Gardner and Susanne Kries, opt for a leisurely journey along the southern shore from Schaffhausen to Lindau via Romanshorn and Bregenz. The route description will be found on page 36 and those wishing to plan a similar journey will find the latest timings in Tables 534, 538 and 952. Nicky and Susanne note that the Tageskarte Euregio Bodensee is an excellent ticket option for exploring this region and details will be found within our Rail Passes feature on pages 667 to 673.

CAR TRAINS SNCF has substantially reduced its car train network by closing the terminals at Biarritz, Bordeaux, Brianc¸on, Brive, Lyon, Narbonne and Toulouse (Table 2).

INTERNATIONAL Tables 10, 12: Eurostar timings between London and Paris / Brussels have been confirmed until May 26 and all relevant tables have been updated. Engineers will be replacing some points in the Channel Tunnel on Sundays January 14 and 28 (also during the evening of the previous day) meaning Eurostar services will have to run to a special timetable. Table 17: Eurostar will run from London to Marseille three days a week from May 4 and four days a week during the summer. Tables 18, 20: Thalys timings shown in our tables are valid until July 7. Table 24: The weekly train 24/23 Trans European Express Paris – Moskva has amended running dates. Train 23/452 now runs one day earlier, departing Moskva on Tuesdays and arriving Paris on Thursday mornings. The reverse train (24/453) is also adjusted with a Thursday evening departure from Paris, arriving Moskva on Saturdays. Table 25: Train 18/17 Nice – Moskva has been considerably retimed. Train 17/409 departs Moskva nine hours later on Thursday evenings, arriving Nice early evening on Saturdays. In the reverse direction train 18/408 departs Nice Sunday mornings with a Moskva arrival midday on Tuesdays. Table 54: The Zu¨rich – Berlin – Hamburg overnight nightjet service (470/471) now runs as two portions, serving Berlin and Hamburg separately. The two parts of the train split / join during an unadvertised stop at Hildesheim. The main benefit of this change is a 40 minute earlier arrival in Hamburg (and a 20 minute later departure southbound). Table 56: The running days of Talgo train 14/13 Berlin – Moskva have been altered. Train 441/14 departs Berlin on Mondays and Saturdays instead of the previous Mondays and Sundays. The return service 440/ 13 departs Moskva on Fridays and Sundays instead of Saturdays and Sundays. Table 60: Train 477/476 Metropol Berlin – Praha / Wien / Budapest has been cut back to run only between Praha and Budapest. A new overnight service between Praha and Wien has commenced conveying sleeping cars only.

Table 61: Train 73/72 Traianus Budapest – Timis¸oara – Bucures¸ti now runs only between Budapest and Timis¸oara. Table 66: Most ICE services between Wien and Frankfurt have been accelerated by up to 25 minutes. Tables 73, 82: A new EC train, numbered 151, provides a new through service from Frankfurt to Milano. Departing Frankfurt at 0801, the service operates via Basel and Lugano, arriving Milano Centrale at 1535. There is also a northbound through train, but this is formed by extending train EC 52 Milano – Bern – Basel through to Frankfurt. Table 76: The number of services between Mu¨nchen and Praha has increased from four to seven each day thus providing a service every two hours throughout the day. Table 82: EC15 Zu¨rich – Milano is extended to Venezia and, in the opposite direction, EC10 starts back from Venezia. EC11 no longer extends to Venezia at weekends. Table 88: The existing Wien – Venezia daytime train (EC 31/30) now operates as a railjet service, numbered 131/130. A second daily railjet service has also been added in each direction: RJ 132 leaves Venezia Santa Lucia at 0955 for a late afternoon arrival in Wien, whilst RJ 133 departs Wien Hbf at 1225, arriving Venezia at 2005. Connections to and from Praha and Budapest have been added to this table to clearly show the new daytime journey opportunities that are now available between the Czech and Hungarian capitals and Venezia following the introduction of the additional trains mentioned above. Table 90: The running dates of EC Thello services between Milano and Marseille have been amended between Nice and Marseille. Table 95: Weekly train 405/404 Vltava Moskva – Praha now departs Moskva on Monday evenings instead of Friday mornings. The return service departs Praha early Wednesday mornings instead of early Saturday evenings. The Russian sleeping cars which ran once weekly from Moskva to Wien, and from St Peterburg to Wien and Praha, have all been withdrawn. Table 96: The through sleeping cars from both Praha and Bratislava to Lviv and Kyiv are withdrawn, but there is a new service from Kosˇice to Kyiv (with connections available from both Praha and Bratislava). Train 34-81 / 81-33 Latorca Budapest – Lviv – Kyı¨ v no longer serves Kyiv. However, a new sleeper service Hortoba´gy Wien – Budapest – Lviv – Kyiv has been introduced (numbered 147-749 / 749-140). Table 97: Train 51/51 Lviv Express Warszawa / Wrocław – Przemys´l – Lviv has been withdrawn and so Table 97 has been deleted. Table 99: Train 407/406 Budapest – Warszawa and 403/402 Budapest – Krako´w are combined and routed Budapest – Krako´w – Warszawa (Table 99). Please note, this service no longer calls at Katowice. Train 101/100 Moravia Wien – Brˇ eclav – Ostrava – Bohumı´ n has been extended to Katowice. Train 115/114 Cracovia Praha – Bohumı´ n (which in previous years has been extended to Krako´w during the summer only) now runs to Krako´w year round. Train EC 105 Sobieski Gdynia – Warszawa – Wien is retimed to run two hours later, thereby breaking the connection to Budapest. However, a connection to Bratislava will be maintained at Brˇ eclav.

GREAT BRITAIN Chiltern Railways has introduced additional through trains between London and Kidderminster on Saturdays and Sundays (Table 128). Great Western Railway is changing its schedules from January 1 so all timings in our Great Western tables are valid from this date. The tables affected are 115 – 118, 120a, 130 – 134 and 136 – 140. Readers travelling before this date are advised to use an earlier version of our timetable or contact Great Western Railway to confirm timings. The service between Reading and Gatwick Airport has been doubled in frequency on Sundays (Table 134). Northern has increased the frequency of Sunday services on a number of its routes including Leeds to Knaresborough (Table 175), Bradford to Skipton and Ilkley (Table 176) and Lincoln to Sheffield (Table 179).

CONTINUED ON PAGE 38

The two-hourly daytime trains between Praha and Budapest now serve Budapest Nyugati station instead of Keleti, reducing the journey time by 15 minutes.

ABOUT THE EUROPEAN RAIL TIMETABLE

What is the European Rail Timetable?

When should I use the International section?

The European Rail Timetable is a concise guide to rail and ferry schedules throughout Europe, and also includes selected areas of the world outside Europe. Needless to say, it cannot be comprehensive (it would run into thousands of pages), but through our knowledge and experience, together with valuable feedback from our readers, we can select those services which we believe will satisfy the needs of most travellers.

The rail tables are divided into two sections - International (Tables 9 to 99) and Country by Country (Tables 100 upwards). For some international services between adjacent countries (for example Stockholm - Oslo or Hamburg A˚rhus) it is necessary to use the relevant Country tables - the index or maps will guide you. Local trains which cross international frontiers will usually only be found in the Country sections. Some international trains also carry passengers internally within each country and will therefore be found in the Country tables as well as the International section. Some services are primarily for international travel and will therefore only be found in the International section - this includes Eurostar trains (London - Paris/Brussels) and Thalys services (Paris - Brussels - Amsterdam/ Ko¨ln), as well as certain long-distance night trains.

When do the services change? There is a major annual timetable change in mid-December affecting almost all European countries, with many countries having a second change in midJune. There are, of course, exceptions. For example, the British summer timetable starts in late May, Sweden changes again in mid-August, whilst Russia and the other CIS countries have their main change at the end of May. Many holiday areas also have separate timetables for the high-summer period, particularly areas of France and Italy. In fact, changes can happen at any time of year, and railways issue amendments either on set dates or as and when necessary. Engineering work also causes frequent changes, and shipping schedules can change at any time.

How are the trains selected for inclusion? People travel for many reasons, whether for leisure, business, sightseeing, visiting friends or relations, or just for the fun of it, and there are no hard and fast rules for selecting the services that we show. Naturally, major towns and inter-city services are shown as a matter of course, but the level of smaller places and local trains shown will depend on the country and even the area. It’s surprising just how many minor lines we manage to squeeze in! Generally we will show a greater number of local trains in areas which are popular tourist destinations or where other services are sparse. It is not possible to show suburban trains within cities or conurbations, or most outer-suburban routes to places close to large cities. However, where there are places of particular interest or importance in this category we do try to show brief details of frequency and journey time.

What about places outside Europe? The European Rail Timetable includes the whole of Turkey and Russia. Furthermore, our Beyond Europe section at the back of each edition features timetables from different areas of the world each month. Eight areas are featured, each appearing at least twice a year. The areas covered are India, South East Asia, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, South America, North America, South Korea, Africa and the Middle East. Details of when each region appears will be found in the introduction of the Beyond Europe section. Please note that we include all of the latest Beyond Europe sections in our expanded Winter and Summer editions.

What else does it contain? A summary of international sleeper services will be found on page 35, listing types of accommodation, operators and facilities on board. We also include a summary of European rail passes (see the list of contents on page 3 for its current location) with a more detailed version appearing in our expanded Summer and Winter editions. Each month a different rail journey is described in our Route of the Month feature, written by our regular travel correspondents, Nicky Gardner and Susanne Kries. Our timetables and other products may be purchased from our website www.europeanrailtimetable.eu.

TRAVEL INFORMATION HEALTH REQUIREMENTS

CURRENCY CONVERSION

It is not mandatory for visitors to Europe to be vaccinated against infectious diseases unless they are travelling from areas where these are endemic. For travellers’ peace of mind, however, protection against the following diseases should be considered:

The information shown below is intended to be indicative only. Rates fluctuate from day to day and commercial exchange rates normally include a commission element.

HIV Hepatitis A Polio Tetanus

Cholera Hepatitis B Rabies Typhoid

Full information is available from the manual published by the World Health Organisation, and travellers should seek advice from their Travel Agent. DRINKING WATER Tap water is usually safe to drink in most parts of Europe. The water in washrooms or toilets on trains is, however, not suitable for drinking. Those who doubt the purity of the tap water are recommended to boil it, to use sterilisation tablets, or to drink bottled water. CLIMATE Most of Europe lies within the temperate zone but there can be considerable differences between North and South, East and West, as illustrated in the table below. Local temperatures are also affected by altitude and the difference between summer and winter temperatures tends to be less marked in coastal regions than in areas far removed from the sea. PASSPORTS AND VISAS Nationals of one country intending to travel to or pass through another country normally require a valid passport and will also require a visa unless a special visa-abolition agreement has been made between the countries concerned. The limit of stay permitted in each country is usually 3 months.

Highest = Average highest daily temperature in oC Lowest = Average lowest daily temperature in oC Rain days = Average number of days with recorded precipitation Source : World Weather Information Service

Applications for visas should be made well in advance of the date of travel to the local consulate of the country concerned. Consuls usually make a charge for issuing a visa. Before issuing a transit visa, a consul normally requires to see the visa of the country of destination.

ITALY

ITALY Operator:

Services:

Services are operated by Trenitalia, a division of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane S.p.a. (FS), unless otherwise noted: www.trenitalia.com. Trenord is a joint venture between Trenitalia and Ferrovie Nord Milano (LeNord) that operates local services, mainly in the Lombardia region: www.trenord.it. Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori (NTV) is an open-access operator providing alternative services over the high-speed network: www.italotreno.it. All trains convey First and Second classes of travel unless otherwise shown by a figure "2" at the top of the column, or in a note in the Table heading. Four classes of accommodation is available on Frecciarossa (FR) services: Executive, Business, Premium and Standard class. Overnight sleeping car (q) or couchette (r) trains do not necessarily convey seating accommodation or may convey only second class seats - refer to individual footnotes. Excelsior sleeping cars offer en-suite facilities. Descriptions of sleeping and couchette cars appear on page 10. Refreshment services (s or u) where known, may only be available for part of the journey, and may be added to or taken away from trains during the currency of the timetable.

Train Categories: There are 9 categories of express train: EC EuroCity international express; supplement payable. EN EuroNight international night express. FA Frecciargento tilting trains used on both high-speed and traditional lines. FB Frecciabianca fast premium fare services using traditional lines. FR Frecciarossa fast premium fare services using high-speed lines. IC InterCity internal day express; supplement payable. Timings:

Tickets: Reservations: Supplements

Valid from December 10, 2017 unless stated otherwise. Readers should note, however, that only partial information was available at press date and further changes are likely. In particular, details of local services and accommodation conveyed on domestic night trains may alter. Dates may refer to last year’s schedules. Trains may be cancelled or altered at holiday times – for public holiday dates see page 4. Some international trains are not shown in this section; these include night services from Austria, France and Germany – see International pages. Trains and international buses operating via Tarvisio are shown in Table 88. Tickets must be date-stamped by the holder before boarding the train using the self-service validating machines – this applies to all tickets except passes. Reservations are compulsory for all journeys by services for which a train category ( EC, EN, FA, FB, FR, IC, ICN, RJ ) is shown in the timing column and passengers boarding without a prior reservation may be surcharged. Reservations for sleeping and couchette car accommodation on domestic night trains are valid only when presented with personal identification. ITA services are ‘global’ price trains with compulsory reservation. Supplements are calculated according to class of travel and total distance travelled (minimum 10km, maximum 3000km), and are payable on all EC and IC trains, regardless of the number of changes of train. A higher fare (including supplement) is payable for travel by FA, FB and FR trains. Some trains are only available to passengers holding long distance tickets and the restrictions applying to these are noted in the tables.
