Visitors to the Liechtenstein Stamp Exhibition LIBA 2012 voted to choose the most beautiful Liechtenstein stamp of the past 100 years. Here too our dragon stamp from 2011 was the chosen winner, followed closely by “Endangered bird species in Liechtenstein WWF” (2011) in second place. Third place went to the Minnesinger sheetlet from 1970, “800th birthday of Wolfram von Eschenbach”.

“PostEurop” each produce a commemorative stamp on a jointly set theme. After “Children’s Books” (2010), “Forests” (2011) and “Visit…” (2012) the theme for the 2013 Europa stamps is “Postal vehicles”. For this year’s issue, as for many before, the proven approach of collaborating with the Liechtenstein School of Art was adopted. Within the preliminary course there a competition was announced at the end of which the winner was a worthy young designer, Mirjam Büchel (born 1992) from Schellenberg. With her winning entry “Vehicle Wheels” (face value CHF 1.40) she seeks to express through a contemporary design that, contrary to the widely held opinion, among young people there is nothing old-fashioned about writing letters. The stamp depicts a wheel composed of three different wheels, each of which belongs to a quite distinct era of postal transport. The upper and lower yellow wheel section belongs to a carriage wheel; after this comes the blue wheel of a bicycle, while the middle section is formed by a vehicle wheel depicted in different shades of red. The three types of wheel are not separate, producing in-
stead – according to the young artist – a single entity intended to show that the post has been a continuing presence across the generations. The stamp’s face design is in the three national colours blue, red and yellow, which at the same time are also the colours of Liechtensteinische Post AG. Furthermore, interposed with the “postal-vehicle” wheel

thus formed is an artistically suggested mountain silhouette depicting the mountain chain which characterises the actual geographical appearance of Liechtenstein. In this way the bond between the Post and the Principality of Liechtenstein is symbolised and the artist highlights just how omnipresent in this country the Post is.

The starting point for this series is the touring exhibition Geopythafibotonpolyhypotesaeder! Matheliebe at the Liechtenstein National Museum. In his collection assembled over the years partly of objects made by himself and partly of objects discovered in the course of everyday life the Liechtenstein mathematician Georg Schierscher seeks firstly to awaken a joy and interest in mathematics and secondly to demonstrate how deeply mathematics is rooted in the natural sciences. Here football for example is revealed as a truncated icosahedron and a car headlight as a parabolic reflector. And in the bloom of a sunflower spirals can be detected the number of which is determined by the numerical sequence of the Italian master mathematician Leonardo da Pisa, also called Fibonacci (ca. 1180 to ca. 1241): 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, … Why this is so has to do with the Golden Angle, which in turn is obtained from the Golden Ratio. The Golden Angle is moreover also responsible for the positions of the leaf-nodes, whereby undesirable overlapping of a leaf by overlying leaves is prevented and the optimum light-yield obtained. Precisely what the “Fibonacci sequence” (face value CHF 1.00), the “Quotient of adjacent Fibonacci numbers” (face value CHF 2.60) and the
“Golden Ratio” (face value 4.00) are all about is made clear in this highly recommended exhibition. The three stamps have been designed by the Vaduz graphic artist Hans Peter Gassner. The source he used for his exploration of another mathematical phenomenon in nature is the book “Formvollendet” (“Perfect in form”) by authors Martin Hess and Andreas Uebele. According to this, leaves can
be “reconstructed” in a polar coordinate circle with a spiral raster, i.e. there is a kind of standard structural plan to which leaves conform. To illustrate this, Gassner has used as models three leaves of indigenous plants which lend themselves especially well to being “reconstructed”: a vine leaf in autumn, the leaf of an apple tree and the leaf of a Japanese maple.

The activities of civil-protection groups, which are under the control of the Office for Civil Protection and Emergency Management (AZSLV) established in 1972, are spread between the country’s individual communities and are put into effect there by numerous volunteers. The Groups’ aim is to protect the population in emergencies, in particular after disasters. They perform the tasks assigned to them as independent relief organisations and as an adjunct to the
Fire Service and the Samaritans. Their principal tasks include looking after and maintaining the effectiveness of home shelters, providing and operating the home-shelter infrastructure and occasionally also attending to and providing for people (evacuees, refugees etc.) in public shelters. The designer, as in the case of the preceding stamps in this series, is the Liechtenstein graphic artist Evelyne Bermann.

The first stamp in the “Voluntary Civil Protection Work” series was issued in 2008. The first few issues were devoted to the work of the “Fire Service” (2008), the “Samaritans” (2009) and Mountain and Water Rescue (2010), while in 2013 in two further stamps the good work done by the “Avalanche Rescue-Dog Handlers” (face value CHF 1.00) and the voluntary “Civil Protection” (face value CHF 1.40) is to be highlighted. Initial trials for Liechtenstein avalanche rescue-dog handlers were conducted in 1974 in close collaboration with the Liechtenstein Alpine Association and the Office of Civil Protection. After the first rules and regulations had been drafted in 1985, in 1990 the Government ratified the Principality of Liechtenstein’s official Avalanche Rescue-Dog Handler Regulations. From this year onwards there has accordingly also existed an official “Liechtenstein Avalanche Rescue-Dog Group”; this was renamed in 1998 the “Principality of Liechtenstein Rescue-Dog Group”, as the specialist training of avalanche rescue-dog handlers had been extended to cover training in wilderness searches. Again and again members of the Group are also allocated to the regional dog-handlers’ on-call service and there are even international deployments.

treaty. But this was readily accepted: from then onwards Switzerland proved itself an extremely reliable partner. The “Switzerland-Liechtenstein Customs Treaty 1923-2013” jubilee double stamp shows a view from a helicopter positioned above the southern national border. The central and unifying element is the Rhine, weaving its way northwards through the Rhine valley. To its left, on the “Switzer-
land” stamp (face value CHF 2.00), one can see parts of the Eastern Switzerland Rhine valley and the Gonzen; on the right-hand “Liechtenstein” stamp (face value CHF 2.00) one can see the Ellhorn and, in the background, the Liechtenstein valley region. The Principality of Liechtenstein and Switzerland are closely bound to one another by economic, regional and friendly ties. It has however not always been so. Over many long years Liechtenstein’s eastern neighbour Austria was its most important partner in a constantly changing world. Firstly by its immediate proximity, without the natural frontier represented by the Rhine, and secondly by the origin of the Princely House, which into the 1930s had its principal home in Vienna, a circumstance which denoted a strong political and economic orientation towards the Danube monarchy. The seal was put on this orientation in 1852 by a joint customs union, which broke up however in 1918 with the fall of the Danube monarchy. The small Principality was thus forced to reposition itself in foreign-policy terms and set about seeking a new partner, which it eventually found to the west of the Rhine. 29th March 1923 saw the signing of the customs treaty with the Confederation under which Liechtenstein became part of the Swiss customs area. The economic survival of the at that time still impoverished Principality was thereby assured; since then however Liechtenstein’s foreign policy has to a large extent been determined by the agreements stipulated in this customs

The new Liechtenstein Stamp Catalogue is being published in time for LIBA 2012. It contains over 500 pages showing all the Liechtenstein stamps issued in 101 years, arranged chronologically by issue date from the first definitive in 1912 to the present, which makes this Catalogue the indispensable reference work for every Liechtenstein collector. For the first time the Liechtenstein Stamp Catalogue also lists the hinge prices for 1912 to 1960. In the established manner the Catalogue also covers the pre-philately era, Austrian stamps used in Liechtenstein, Austrian postal stationery used in Liechtenstein, Swiss stamps and postal stationery used in Liechtenstein, Liechtenstein stamps 1912–2012, Liechtenstein postal stationery, airmail, Liechtenstein Zeppelin mail, Zeppelin Contracting State mail, catapult mail, military and forces post, POW and internee post, postmarks, postage rates and Liechtenstein coins.
It is appropriate that the year in which the 100th anniversary of Liechtenstein philately is being celebrated should see the publication of the “Handbook of Liechtenstein Topical Philately 1985 – 2011”, which has long been awaited among philatelists and closes the present gap in information about Liechtenstein stamp and postal stationery issues between 1985 and 2011. Like its predecessor this Handbook provides several hundred pages of useful information about not only the themes treated in the designs of Liechtenstein stamps, but also about the small Principality’s history and culture. Like the classic “Liechtenstein Topical Philately Handbook” (Vol. 21) covering the years 1912 to 1984, the present issue too is published in the Swiss Topical Philately Association’s Publication Series (Vol. 35). The publisher is the Liechtenstein Collectors’ Club in Switzerland (VLS), which initiated this Handbook and succeeded in obtaining Dr. Ernst Schlunegger, the author of the first volume, for the preparation of this welcome sequel.
Liechtenstein is seen at its loveliest in the newly published book of photographs “Principality of Liechtenstein – the most beautiful pictures and stamps”. Combining pictures from Liechtenstein with the most beautiful stamps produced in 100 years has yielded a classic work. This volume depicts the beauties of Liechtenstein in contemporary and entrancing views, combining photography and philately to fascinating effect.
