which portrays two works by the illustrator, engraver, painter and graphic designer Hans Kliemand who died in 1976, is intended to revive a popular earlier series of stamps. Hans Kliemand was born on 22nd July 1922 in the artists’ colony of Hellerau in Dresden (Germany). After attending the Richter School of Art, from which he graduated as a scientific illustrator, in 1940 he embarked on a course of study at the State University of Art and Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden. In 1941 however he was called up for military service and had to go to war aged 18 as a medical orderly. After the end of the war he travelled to Liechtenstein for the first time to visit his brother Alfons, who had lived in Vaduz since the beginning of the 1930s as a stamp dealer. With Alfons’s help he resumed his studies at the Nürnberg School of Arts and Crafts, successfully completing them in 1950. For some years he lived in Weissenburg (Bavaria), maintaining his own printing studio there. During his many visits to Vaduz in this period he produced drawings (including some for the yearbook of the Principality of Liechtenstein Historical Association), portraits and stamp designs, together with his first small-format
etchings on fauna and flora and also local views which have enjoyed great popularity in Liechtenstein principally as Christmas cards. In 1961 he made Liechtenstein his permanent home. Nine years later he became a member of the first Association of Graphic Artists in Liechtenstein and took part in exhibitions in the country. On 3rd March 1976 Hans Kliemand died in the St. Gallen Hospital, to which he had been taken after a serious cycling accident. The two stamps show the pen-and-ink drawings “View of Vaduz” (face value CHF
1.00) and “View into the Rhine Valley” (face value CHF 1.90). The stamps, designed by Heinz Schädler, have been kept deliberately uncomplicated, the background colour having been chosen to accord with the original paper. The stamps have been printed by a combination of offset and steel engraving and are being issued in two 10-stamp sheetlets. Both drawings are from the deceased’s estate (the Evi Kliemand collection). Bridges bring together
It is not yet 150 years since Liechtenstein and Switzerland, the two countries separated by the Rhine as border-marking river, were first brought together by shared bridges. Before that people and goods were conveyed between the Liechtenstein and Swiss banks of the Rhine by ferries, five of which were still operating at the beginning of the 19th century. Only after physical structures controlling the course of the Rhine had been put in place was it possible in 1867-68 to build the first wooden bridges, at that time still uncovered, between Bendern and Haag and between Schaan and Buchs. The first part of the “Bridges bring together” series illustrates in greater detail two of these bridges, which have since been a characterising feature of the Rhine valley. The “Old Rhine bridge” (face value CHF 0.85) between Vaduz and Sevelen (“Vaduz-Sevelen”, face value CHF 1.00), which used to be the main link between Vaduz and neighbouring Switzerland, was built in 1870-1871. After it had had to be raised twice in the following years, in 19001901 it was re-built on the piers of its predecessor. Since the mid 1970s the Old Rhine bridge has been accessible only to non-motorised traffic. The last major reno-
vation was completed in 2010. The “Railway bridge” (face value CHF 1.40) between “Schaan-Buchs” (face value CHF 1.90), which later became a subsection of the famous “Orient Express”, was first crossed in 1872 by a train drawn by a steam locomotive belonging to the “Vorarlberg Railway”. In the devastating flood disaster of 1927 the section of the bridge on the Liechtenstein side plunged into the water. In 193435 the present-day 190-metre-long steel bridge was erected on the river pier of the collapsed bridge. The stamps’ face designs FDC
are based on photographs by Bruno Köpfli from Eschen. As a special feature two different stamps of different sizes have each been printed together on an 8-stamp sheetlet.

the “Marmot” stamp is also Liechtenstein’s official SEPAC (Small European Postal Administrations Cooperation) stamp for 2013. The “Alpine hare”, Lepus timidus (face value CHF 1.90) found all over Europe belongs to the hare family. It is noted first and foremost for the fact that its fur changes
according to region from a greyish-brown summer coat to a white winter one. The length of its ears also adapts to the different climatic conditions. The colder the habitat, the shorter the ears. The “Young animals of the Alpine region” issue has been produced in practical self-adhesive form.

Series of stamps relating to a country’s animal world exist in profusion. This applies to Liechtenstein too. Designs featuring young animals however are a rarity. The “Young animals of the Alpine region” set designed by Erich Beck of Triesenberg depicts four examples of such young mammals native to Liechtenstein’s mountain world. The “Ibex”, Capra ibex (face value CHF 0.85) is a goat species common in the Alps which can climb to altitudes of up to 3,500 m above sea-level. The adult male ibex carries imposing curved horns up to a metre long; the female ibex has only short and slightly curved horns. The “Chamois”, Rupicapra rupicapra (face value CHF 1.00) is another goat-like species; it is found throughout the Alpine region and also in some parts of the Balkans and Carpathians. Both males and females carry circular horns which can grow to up to 25 centimetres in length and are not shed in winter. Frequent mountain hikers in particular will be familiar with the shy “Marmot”, Marmota (face value CHF 1.40) because of its distinctive whistle, used for communicating and giving warnings within the colony. The European marmot, at home in the Alps, the Carpathians, the Tatras and the Pyrenees, lives in extended corridor systems 10 to 70 metres in length. By the way:

Following the great success obtained in the past by Stefan Erne’s self-adhesive stamps with designs based on butterflies and garden flowers, this informal series is being continued with the “Alpine flowers” issue. For it the Chiltern gentian, the Alpine forget-me-not and the Hairy Alpine rose have been depicted. The “Chiltern gentian”, Gentiana rhaetica (face value CHF 1.00) is a rose-pink plant which grows up to 40 cm in height and is in flower from May to October on pastures and meadows at altitudes up to about 2,600 m above sea-level. This plant, also called German Enzian, prefers loamy, calcareous soils and is widespread in central Europe. The perennial “Alpine forget-me-not”, Myosotis alpestris (face value CHF 1.90) belongs to the borage family and is at home between 1,300 and 3,000 m above sealevel on moist ground, grassy areas, scree beds and natural meadows in the mountain ranges of Europe, Asia and North America. When they come into flower the blooms are lilac-coloured; later they turn an intense sky-blue, as is typical for members of the borage family. The “Hairy Alpine rose”, Rhododendron hirsutum (face value CHF 4.00), also called just “Alpine rose” or “rockrose”, is an evergreen shrub with distinctly cili-
olate leaves and vibrantly deep pink flowers in grape-like clusters. It blooms from May to July and can grow to a height of up to a metre. The Hairy Alpine rose occurs principally in the Northern and Southern Limestone Alps at altitudes between 600 and 2,500 m above sea-level and is found there
on limestone debris, scree and rocky slopes and also in thinly-growing pine and mountain-pine forests. Beautiful as it is for the mountain walker to look at, it can also be dangerous. Like so many rhododendron species it is highly poisonous for both humans and animals.

Circle of Liechtenstein Collectors Publication Series No. 15 Liechtenstein Postmarks – Part 2 With Volume 15 in its Publication Series the Circle of Liechtenstein Collectors (RLS) revisits a topic which has been the subject of many previous publications, including some in this very Series. In fact Volume 2 in the Series, by Gerhard W. Blümel, published as long ago as 1964 and out of print for many years, was concerned with the subject of “Liechtenstein Postmarks”. In 2002 this subject underwent a fundamental revision in Volume 10 of the RLS Publication Series by the authors of that volume, Karl-Heinz Bauer and Dr. Karlheinz Metzler. After more than 10 years which have seen the appearance of a large number of new postmarks it was now time to update this revision and – in accordance with the wishes of many collectors – to augment it with a complete reworking of the subject of special or

commemorative postmarks. The RLS is pleased to have been able to obtain the services of the authors Karl-Heinz Bauer and Dr. Karlheinz Metzler again for the purpose. The two authors have based their updating and reworking on the original version of these chapters of the handbook and have also adopted the original numbering scheme, which has been augmented accordingly. This means that the handbook too can be appropriately updated and augmented. Volume 15 in the RLS Publication Series is intended to make the two authors’ comprehensive research done over many years accessible to a wider public. Only available in German.
Young animals of the Alpine region: Maximum card and postal stationery in one
For the first time Philately Liechtenstein is issuing a maximum card as postal stationery. This combination of a maximum card with an impressed stamp on the back opens up wholly new opportunities for stamp collectors and enthusiasts: greetings can now be sent in philatelic form with the greatest of ease from Liechtenstein to anywhere in the world. Philately Liechtenstein is confident that in this very special maximum card it has a new and attractive product to offer which will appeal to many stamp-lovers as something out of the ordinary.

Liechtensteinische Post AG’s digital mail service Email has for years now been one of the most important communication channels. The traditional letter is nevertheless still generally preferred where sensitive data and information are involved. In the past few years Liechtensteinische Post AG has combined its expertise in the field of traditional post with know-how in electronic communications. This has yielded post-like digital solutions as the ideal link between the physical and digital worlds. The focus here is on the fields of user authentication and data security during both transmission and storage, and also on linking these solutions to added-value services such as upstream digitisation, payment, archiving, eForms etc. and direct integration with the despatch partners’ own process. In short – the usual general postal services will in future be rendered just as securely and automatically in digital form, as numerous businesses and private individuals know already from their eBanking experience. Postal Treaty with the Sovereign Military Order of Malta On 12th December 2012 in Vaduz Deputy Prime Minister Dr Martin Meyer, Minister of Economic Affairs, and the Ambassador of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, Maximilian Turnauer, signed a postal agreement between the Government of the Principality of Liechtenstein and the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta, also called the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM). This postal agreement came into effect on 1st January 2013. Under it Liechtensteinische Post AG conveys letters and postcards bearing SMOM stamps within the territory of the Principality of Liechtenstein. Ruggell Post Office in the new Ruggell Shopping Centre (REC) since 25th February 2013 Since 25th February 2013 Ruggell Post Office has been located in the entrance area of the new REC (Ruggell Shopping Centre) at 33 Landstrasse. Ruggell Post Office has been designed in such a way that customers benefit from a high level of convenience and a pleasant atmosphere. The mailbox system is located outside the building, giving customers 24-hour access
to their letter mail. The team at Ruggell Post Office provide firstly basic postal services such as letters, parcels and payment transactions. Secondly additional products and services are offered which ideally complement those provided by the REC (e.g. greeting and condolence cards, Tchibo, Swisslos, Lotto, Toto, a photobooth, gift vouchers for use in Liechtenstein shops, VAT refunds). The range of non-postal goods and services offered by the Post Office has been tailored to those on offer at the Shopping Centre. Brand Liechtenstein
In spring 2012 the people of Liechtenstein selected by ballot a new logo for «Brand Liechtenstein», which on 1st May 2012 replaced the previous aubergine-coloured logo used before then. In collaboration with Liechtensteinische Post AG the Government of the Principality of Liechtenstein has since then commissioned the production of various high-quality promotional articles bearing the new logo. The new articles such as ballpoints, lapel-badges, baseball caps, writing cases and many more make ideal gifts or little presents to take along when visiting and have been available exclusively since 25th February 2013 at any Liechtensteinische Post AG post office, the Philately Shop in Vaduz and online from the Webshop at www.philatelie.li.
