usage protocol The purpose of preventative dental care and oral hygiene procedures is to prevent the development or progression of gingivitis and periodontal disease. These are caused by an accumulation of bacterial plaque on the surfaces of the teeth that initially causes inflammation of the gum tissues (gingiva). As the gingiva becomes inflamed, it starts to swell and lift away from the tooth surface, allowing plaque to accumulate under the gum line (subgingival), where tooth brushing, diets and chews cannot reach and disrupt it. If plaque is allowed to remain undisturbed for long enough, it will absorb minerals from the saliva to form tartar or calculus and now it cannot be removed with a tooth brush even when it is out in the open (supragingival). The presence of plaque (+/- calculus) below the gum line incites further inflammation which leads to various combinations of bone loss, gingival recession and pocket formation (periodontitis). To maintain good oral hygiene, gingival and periodontal health it is imperative to prevent plaque from accumulating, maturing and mineralizing. Plaque reforms on the tooth aided by the formation of the acquired pellicle (from saliva) within an hour or so of a professional cleaning. Plaque can become calculus within a few days. Hence plaque control must be a daily activity. If the vet does an oral hygiene procedure and sends the animal home with no plaque control, by the time they see the animal for two week recheck, there will already be plaque and calculus present. healthymouth™ is not a treatment for disease and does not remove accumulated plaque and calculus. Its intent and action is to prevent plaque from forming in the first place. Introduce healthymouth™ 2 weeks pre-operatively so that by the time of the professional cleaning the animal is already drinking it and can continue immediately post-op so plaque is not given that head-start. At the very least, the product should be sent home on the day of the procedure so the owners can at least start to integrate the product into their pet’s life right away.
