Almeria sees largest protest in a decade ALMERIA hosted the largest labour union protest the city has witnessed in the past decade. It was one of the 80 demonstrations which took place all over the country.
In Almeria alone, more than 15,000 people joined forces to protest against the government’s recent financial measures to steer the country through the financial crisis.
The government’s strategy has been to make budget cuts, raise taxes and public university costs, establish prescription co-payment, cut benefits, change labour laws and the dependency law. However, these measures have been met with much criticism from opposition politicians, labour unions and citizens. The labour unions UGT, CCOO and CSIF shared their outrage with the people of Almeria in a march from Puerta Purchena to Plaza de las Velas, carrying signs and banners that read: “They want to ruin the country. We have to stop this.
