FERRARA beach in Torrox will soon have two offshore breakwaters to protect it from erosion.

According to the Mayor of Torrox, Francisco Muñoz, the Coast and Sea Maintenance Department has planned

to carry out repairs on Ferrara beach, which has been continuously losing sand for the past several decades due to storms.

The plan involves building two breakwaters; one parallel to the beach and the other

perpendicular to the coast.

The parallel breakwater will be 150 metres long, and the perpendicular breakwater will be smaller; 120 metres long and will be located across from the lighthouse.

The construction to save Torrox’s most famous beach currently is waiting to be studied by a government environmentalist department.

The head of the Coast and Sea Department has specified that the work

will only affect the sea in front of the beaches, and that the promenade will remain the same as it has always been.

The local government also pointed out that this construction will be very important for the town and its economy, ‘due to the damage that is done to the beach year after year, also affecting tourism and the local economy.’

Muñoz also proposed the works be done in phases in order to begin without delay.

COMPETA Town Hall has begun turning off the water supply at night as a precaution in the face of a possible drought.

Fair support ONE THOUSAND people signed a petition for El Morche Town Hall to retract its decision to unify the fair celebrations in one place, instead of the traditional three locations.

The aquifers which supply the town are located in the Sierra Almijara and levels have fallen considerably over the past few

months, due to the lack of rain.

The local authorities are concerned that the dry spell will last beyond the summer and have decided to put precautionary measures in place.

Town hall defends shopping mall A NEW shopping mall may soon be built in Velez-Malaga, despite the town hall’s previous position which favoured small and mediumsized businesses.

The company Taramillas Zona Empresarial, which is represented by the head of Velez’s business association (ACEV), Jose Cotilla, has proposed building a shopping mall on a 90,000-square-metre plot close to El Ingenio shopping centre.

The company is negotiating the terms for a change in the plot’s zoning category, which is currently protected from building.

If the town hall finally accepts the proposal, it will be an important change in the local government’s position regarding the importance of helping small and medium-sized companies.

Mayor Francisco Delgado defended this change of heart by saying that this project is

LHAMBRA PALACE is Spain’s most visited monument.

Last year more than 2.3 million visitors - an average of more than 6,300 every day of the year - flocked to Granada to see the Alhambra and the Generalife Gardens in 2011.

And now, after 10 years of careful restoration, the Alhambra Palace has an added attraction: the famous Patio of Lions.

Restoration work most importantly focused on the 12 lions surrounding the fountain as well as archaeological digs.

The fountain is probably Andalucia’s most famous image, with visitors now able to walk on marble from Macael, in Almeria, similar to when it was first built under the orders of Sultan Muhammad V. During the lengthy renovation it was discovered that each of the lions has a different face.

Nerja councillor injured in hit and run incident A BRITISH drunk-driver was allegedly involved in a collision with Nerja Councillor Encarnacion Moreno and fled the scene afterwards.

The 60-year-old was reportedly driving on the wrong side of the road when he hit the Employment and Social Welfare Councillor while she was riding her motorcycle. The man was seen by two off-duty police officers, fleeing the scene. They followed him home to the Balcon de Europa area, where they called the Local Police. When the police arrived, he was breathalysed and found to be drunk. He will be charged for failing to give assistance at the scene.

The councillor suffered only minor cuts and bruises and said she did not know how she was not killed in the accident, as she had barely avoided crashing into the other vehicle head-on.

End to smells at Motril port RESIDENTS in the area surrounding Motril Port have learned this week that measures will be taken to prevent smells from the sewage plant.

The residents around the port and beach areas have been requesting that measures be taken ever since the sewage plant was built in the Rambla de las Brujas area 13 years ago.

The plant processes sewage from Motril and Salobreña and will now be deodorised, according to a promise from the local Community of Municipalities.

The project is estimated to cost some €2 million which will be paid with the fee for water purification, which is included in local water bills and collected by the Junta de Andalucia.

Tourist ‘passport’ for events in Malaga area MALAGA Provincial Government has created a local ‘tourist passport’ which will reward people who attend

certain events in Malaga province.

The ‘Pasaporte del Turista Singular’ comes into effect this month, with

Prostitute acquitted by court A PROSTITUTE has been acquitted of disobedience charges by Malaga Provincial Court.

An initial court sentence found her guilty of disobeying law enforcement officers when she was seen speaking to possible clients after the police banned her from selling sex last April.

According to the sentence, the Criminal Code states a person may be fined up to 60 days when he or she “shows disrespect and inconsideration towards the authority or its agents� or “insults or is repeatedly disobedient or refuses to identify oneself.�

According to the Provincial Court, the accused had not committed any crimes because her behaviour could not be described as disrespectful or insulting. The sentence stated she had simply not complied with a warning.

Missing Briton search continues GUARDIA CIVIL are searching caves in the Sierra Almijara area for a 63-year-old British man who went missing on July 21.

The teams taking part in the search, which include Guardia Civil, Civil Protection, Andalucia Emergency Response teams, the Mountain Rescue Teams and Malaga Provincial Fire Consortium’s Canine Rescue Unit, are following this method in case he has fallen into an area where he cannot be seen from the air.

They are also trying to locate the GPS tracking

device he was carrying and his mobile phone, but both appear to be turned off.

The man, named as Gordon Simm, left his hotel in Nerja to go hiking in the Chillar River area and never returned. Rescue teams and volunteers have been searching the area by land and air between Nerja and Frigiliana. The bicycle he is reported to have had with him has not been found. Other people hiking in the area have not reported seeing anyone who appears to be lost on the mountain.

The man’s wife told the local press he is an experienced hiker who knows the area well and went well equipped.

She is currently staying in Nerja, where she has been coming on holiday with her husband for several years, since raising the alarm the day after he disappeared, and is now accompanied by her daughter.

A Dutch man who has been working in the area as a guide for more than 11 years, reportedly told Mr Simm not to go on the route he planned, as it was “much more dangerous than it appears on the map�.

Canoeing trip ends workshop

22 youths took part in the course.

A SERIES of workshops held for youths at risk of social exclusion ended with a canoeing trip.

The trip along the coast was the last of the activities carried out as part of the course which was organised by the local town hall.

Twenty-two youths aged between 12 and 14 took part and learned how to live a more healthy lifestyle.

Rubbish patrol LOCAL POLICE in Torrox will make sure that local residents put out their rubbish between 8pm and 11pm.

The town hall has launched this campaign with the aim of improving the image of the town during the tourist season.

The elusive art of chillaxing MORE than half of holidaying Spaniards need a fortnight to wind down completely.

Disconnecting is hardest for young professionals aged between 25 and 34, found a recent survey.

A total of 46 per cent take between a week and a fortnight to relax and 11 per cent require even longer to shrug off workplace worries.

A further 38 per cent find it impossible to entirely forget about work while on holiday, compared with 36.3 per cent two years ago.

More fortunate are the 43 per cent needing only one day to put routine aside and enjoy the summer break.

Nudists spend €3m per year in Almeria

Butcher chops up shop A BUTCHER destroyed his premises after the landlord refused to renew the lease.

First he removed his equipment and belongings from the shop in Leioa (Vizcaya). Then he set to work with a sledgehammer and did not stop until the facade was down.

The 10-year lease expired last winter and was renewable ‘by mutual consent’ although the butcher, named Carlos, learnt that the owner wanted another €150 a month. “I would be paying €1,000 and the way things are now, that’s a lot,” Carlos said. He talked it over with his wife and returned later, agreeing to the increase.

But because Carlos had not renewed the contract when it expired the owner changed his mind, saying the premises should be cleared by December 1.

Having ordered large quantities of meat for the Christmas period, Carlos asked to remain until his stock was sold. Despite receiving a refusal he did not vacate the shop, Carlos now admits, although he tried on three occasions to persuade the owner to change his mind.

The owner also turned down Carlos’s offer to sell the equipment, counters, refrigerators and other appliances.

Carlos decided to move out everything of value and put it in store. Some items were too big to go through the door so he knocked down the shopfront.

“I put it in,” he reasoned, explaining that 10 years earlier he spent the equivalent of €120,000 on improvements.

NUDIST-FRIENDLY: Beaches in Almeria.

Thief left ID at crime scene A MAN was arrested for alleged theft in Almeria and Granada when officers found his ID at a crime scene.

The 22-year-old from Almeria was arrested when police were able to connect him to the crime scenes where he would allegedly steal from storerooms in housing complexes, later selling the items on the black market.

The objects he would steal were usually bicycles and tools, which were sold by third parties, allowing him to

get rid of the incriminating evidence.

The areas he allegedly stole from were residential complexes in El Zapillo, Avenida del Mediterraneo and Los Molinos, where he would go late at night and break into storerooms.

The accused admitted to the crimes upon his arrest.

A police investigation is still open to determine if more people were involved and further arrests needed to be made.

Baby falls four storeys A BABY was injured after falling from the fourth floor of a building.

The incident took place on Calle Torrevieja in Dolores, 10 kilometres from the nearest beaches in La Marina and Guardamar. The one-and-a-halfyear-old Moroccan boy was

reportedly playing on the terrace with his brother when he fell onto the hood of a car parked in the street below, which lessened the impact.

He was taken, while still conscious, to hospital. His prognosis was uncertain at the time of going to print.

NUDIST tourists spend approximately €3 million each summer in Almeria.

This year’s nudist tourism has suffered the effects of the economic crisis, along with other types of tourism.

However, nudists have not given up completely on Almeria’s beaches for the holiday season, and usually spend €60 per day.

Predictions for this year forecast a slight decrease in this year’s numbers, although it is not expected to be dramatic.

These tourists tend to stay an average of 4.2 days, and because of the crisis, Spanish tourists are generally staying at national destinations for the holidays.

The province of Almeria has a total of 31 beaches where it is legal to practise nudism throughout the province.

Andalucia’s Naturist Nudist Association (ANNA) has designed a map that shows the areas in which nudism is most common. Several beaches in El Ejido, Carboneras and Mojacar are frequented by nudists and non-nudists alike, although the most renowned nudist-friendly area is in Vera, where there is also an urbanisation and other establishments specifically designed for naturalists.

Enquiry into hotel group THE hotel group Citymar’s headquarters in Roquetas de Mar were searched by the Tax Office and Guardia Civil.

The hotel group, owned by the Catalonian businessman Miguel Rifa, is currently under investigation for alleged crimes of fraud.

According to legal sources, the case is also under a secrecy order, although it is known that the business was searched last Monday.

Other associations and businesspeople, known for working closely with Rifa, were also investigated for tax crimes which will apparently affect a network of several people.

No arrests have been made yet; however, the investigation is still under way.

Government to cash in on Franco’s tomb CHARGING to visit Franco’s mausoleum in the Valle de los Caidos (Madrid) will earn the government an annual €2 million.

Each year approximately half-amillion people visit the tomb of Francisco Franco, the dictator who controlled Spain from 1939 up to his

death in 1975. After being closed to the public for almost three years, the mausoleum reopened in March.

The €5 entrance fee was announced in April and introduced on June 1.

The Valle de los Caidos (Valley of the Fallen) was built on Franco’s

orders as a monument to those who died in the 1936-1939 Civil War. It closed for restoration in 2009, but the current PM Rajoy gave the order to reopen the mausoleum in March and now the government expects to earn an extra €2 million a year from the entrance fee.

THE mayor of Almuñecar, Trinidad Herrero, and the president of the Marina del Este Port Society, Jose Carlos Martin, raised another Blue Flag for quality above the marina, which was awarded for its wellequipped facilities.

The port has 227 mooring spaces for vessels reaching up to 30 metres long, as well as supply services for fuel, water, electricity, showers, restaurants, etc, which all contribute to making Almuñecar Port an important transit area between Almeria and Malaga’s respective ports.

Investigator launches crime reporting service in Spain Fraudulent mobile phone app duping unsuspecting users IN response to growing frustration and complaints, a solution has been launched by a private investigator to handle fraudsters who have been targeting mobile phone users.

EU Investigations, a European private investigation company, reports it has been flooded with customer complaints regarding a mobile phone application which has been siphoning money from innocent users with services they have not signed up for.

The fraud has affected English-speaking people, who are more than 12,500,000 in number in Spain, as well as Spanish nationals and other foreign residents. The victims can only detect the fraud by checking their monthly bill.

The fraudulent mobile phone app automatically deducts €1.40 each day, which will amount to €43 per month.

Once the application is installed on the mobile phone, the fraudulent app starts to deduct money every day without giving the user any clue to the fact that this is happening.

Plazamar to be repaired, finally VELEZ-MALAGA is to begin renovation work on the Plazamar parking garage in Torre del Mar. The town hall was ordered to repair the private parking area due to water leaks from the square above, which have forced the owners to close it.

The leaks are due to foundation problems caused by the presence of water in the ground below. The car park’s owners had been complaining about the leaks since 1994, although the town hall reportedly did nothing to solve the problem.

A court ordered the town hall to repair both the plaza and the garage in 2001, and after an 11-year delay the construction work will finally start again.

The initial works were interrupted due to changes in the building company, which backed out of the project shortly after it began.

The works are programmed to finish at the end of the year, and will cost €1,230,000, most of which will be paid by the town hall, while the rest will be charged to the garage owners.

‘Contacts’ ban likely THE ‘Contacts’ columns found in most Spanish newspapers could soon be a thing of the past.

Earlier attempts to outlaw classified advertisements for prostitution came to nothing despite the backing of all political groups.

Self-regulation within the industry itself has been ‘fruitless’ and ‘manifestly inadequate’, according to a 2010 report by Spain’s Council of State.

The previous government’s plans to eliminate the newspaper advertisements were halted by last November’s early election.

The present government now intends an all-party parliamentary sub-committee to agree the terms of a ban.

Committee members will also have to decide whether to extend the ban to internet editions of newspapers carrying the columns.

Legally, the new purchaser can be held liable only for the unpaid community fees of last year and the current year. Also legally, the seller is required to pay community fees up to the date of sale. Properly, then, you would pay from your month of purchase.

A great alternative way to face Euro-nation woes AS many will know, I have often considered the ‘peripheral’ members of the Eurozone, and suggested means by which their problems might be resolved.

Most solutions have revolved around the impoverished southern countries voluntarily quitting the Euro instead of just passively waiting until a final economic collapse forces them out.

Now, however, Ambrose EvansPritchard, a leading financial correspondent, has come up with an intriguingly alternative plan.

Taking Spain’s predicament as a prime example of a bad situation mainly of the national banks’ own making - rendered even worse by political interference and incompetence, he suggests that the debt-ridden peripheral countries, Spain, Greece, Portugal, and Italy and perhaps Ireland - should form their own bloc.

Then, using their joint ECB voting representation (against Germany’s two votes, plus a few from other ‘hard-core’ states) they should compel the European Central Bank (ECB) to comply with the provisions of the Lisbon Treaty which obliges that entity to ‘contribute to the stability of the financial system’, thus forcing a showdown.

With the ‘hard core’ removed from the equation, the ‘Club Med’ countries would have the Eurozone to themselves, which would of course lead to the single currency being drastically devalued on international markets.

They may, after all, contain the seeds of their salvation.

www.euroweeklynews.com A COUPLE of weeks ago I wrote an article in the Euro Weekly News on the latest proposals for the UK’s new Statutory Residence Test (SRT). The article covered the basic elements of the test and what has changed since last year.

The SRT will be a definitive test of residence depending on the number of days you spend in the UK and your ties with it. The more “connecting factors” you have, the fewer days you can spend in the UK before you become UK resident. You can view the full article on the news page on www.blevinsfranks.com The new test is to provide more certainty for expatriates as to whether or not they are UK tax resident and therefore liable to UK income and capital gains tax. However, ‘certainty’ does not necessarily mean ‘simplicity’, as evidenced by the fact that the latest Treasury document runs to over 120 pages. Expatriates should still take advice to clarify their position. Blevins Franks has in depth knowledge and experience of the tax and residence laws of both the UK and Spain and how they interact.

This week I take a closer look at some of the detail which could affect your residence status.

“Only home” Anyone whose “only home” is in the UK will always be considered UK tax resident, regardless of day counting. This rule remains in place even

though respondents to last year’s consultation document argued this very low bar would make many people automatically resident, and that the subjective term “only home” could cause uncertainty.

The government said it was too difficult to provide a precise definition, but it is confident that most people will know where their home is.

It did however provide some guidelines. A UK property will not meet the “only home” condition if it is a holiday home, or if you also have a home overseas, or if it is available for 91 days or less a year.

Ownership is not a determining factor.

Connecting factors – family and accommodation Many respondents argued that having family (spouse, minor children) and accommodation as separate connecting factors equated to double counting and

penalises families.

The government however kept them as two factors, making it easier for anyone with UK resident family to be caught out, arguing that having a home and family makes for a stronger connection than just having available accommodation.

However, this rule was relaxed slightly - whether or not your family has available accommodation is now irrelevant; only accommodation used by yourself is taken into account if it is available to you for a continuous period of 91 days in a tax year and you spend at least one night in it during the tax year.

A day in the UK Day counting refers to the number of midnights you spend in the UK during a UK tax year.

To avoid manipulation, the government is considering a supplementary rule to apply to anyone who spends a large number of days in the UK but always leaves before midnight.

Transitional rule A transitional rule will be introduced whereby you can apply the new rules to determine residency in any of the three years prior to the date the SRT comes into effect.

However you can only do this if you need to know what your residence status was then, to determine your residence in future years. Otherwise the existing guidelines continue to apply up to 5th April 2013.

Exceptional circumstances The government will allow days in the UK to be disregarded under exceptional circumstances. This is where you are in the UK for reasons beyond your control, such as national or local emergencies or sudden or life-threatening illness or injury. It does not mention what happens if your spouse suffers an illness, nor does it include cases where you choose to undertake medical treatment or look after a sick relative in the UK. Split Years Under UK tax rules an individual is either resident or not resident the whole tax year.

There is however an Extra Statutory Concession which can permit split year treatment for certain types of income and capital gains. The government now intends to place this on a statutory footing and lists situations where a tax year can be split. You can spend 16 days back in the UK in the tax year of

departure without losing split year treatment, but you must have no home in the UK to achieve this.

The proposed new rules are a major advance in providing certainty for British expatriates.

Nonetheless they are still complex and confusing to the non tax specialist, and some of the finer detail could trip you up and prove costly. You need to take your local residence rules into account, and a tax treaty can affect your position.

The offshore secrets of mega-rich THE mega-rich, including some from Spain, are hiding billions of euros in offshore bank accounts, which are protected by savvy banking professionals.

A new economic study reveals that an elite group of billionaires is using loopholes to hide border capital amounting to €15 billion, which is equivalent to the combined GDP of the US and Japan.

Compiled from data from various sources including the International Monetary Fund, the study suggests the equity capital that has left the borders of many developing nations could pay off what they owe to the world due to the present crisis.

The G20 vowed in 2008 that action would be taken against tax havens but many countries still do not provide that information.

A prominent workers’ rights group in the UK is pushing in favour of taking action against these tax loopholes used by multinational corporations and millionaires.

(5) Switch roles and repeat as necessary.

Euro remaining under pressure NOT a week or a day goes by without an avalanche of news and data confirming that the Eurozone is sinking deeper into trouble.

Whilst all eyes have temporarily been taken away from Greece, Spain has now become the centre of all attentions for all the wrong reasons. Despite bailouts from the EU aimed at supporting the Spanish banking system as well as numerous announcements from the Spanish Government of upcoming austerity measures to reduce the debt, investors remained seriously concerned about the country’s possible need for a full sovereign rescue package.

This comes as the cost of borrowing has rocketed to a record 7.5 per cent whilst a number of Spanish regions (Murcia and Valencia) have been asking for help from Madrid.

The single currency is not faring any better against the US dollar, losing more than 8 per cent in the last 90 days.

Whilst the Euro’s widespread weakness will in itself support exports outside the Eurozone by improving competitively, one cannot ignore the deep-rooted issues which have led to such a

decline and which could alarmingly point towards a widespread depression in Europe.

The Euro/GBP levels are already putting pressure on the UK’s export sector, damaging growth efforts and dampening the effects of austerity measures. The latest most significant sign that Britain is also suffering despite being outside of the Eurozone is the publication of the second quarter GDP figures which came out at -0.7 per cent whilst forecasters

were expecting a 0.3 per cent drop. High volatility has been hitting the British stock market, affecting investors’ portfolios and savings, whilst Spain decided to temporarily ban the short selling of shares to avoid heightened speculation adding unnecessary pressure on the markets.

Meanwhile, Germany is under threat of losing its AAA rating due to the very high uncertainty surrounding the Eurozone and its most fragile members.

EWN COMMENT Smoke screen IT is common knowledge that restricting abortion does not produce fewer terminations. Women with sufficient means go abroad and women without them go to primitive backstreet practitioners. But while people criticise Justice Minister Alberto RuizGallardon for wanting to introduce abortion

regulations comparable to Ireland’s or Malta’s they aren’t criticising Mariano Rajoy. And they aren’t talking about ineffectual government, a carcrash economy and the spectre of sovereign bailout.

Delayed reaction MINISTERS still insist that Spain’s eroded economy is the fault of their Socialist predecessors. But the Valencian Community, the first region to need a bailout and where politicians’ vanities and whims led to bankruptcy, has been in PP hands for 17 years. So too has Murcia, next in line for rescue. Are we supposed to believe Rajoy had no inkling of what the autonomies had in store for him?

Beach ashtrays a great idea even for non-smokers I THINK that the provision of ashtrays on Javea’s beaches is a great idea (Costa Blanca North, Issue 1311).

People who smoke are going to do it whether they have these ashtrays or not, so this is the lesser of two evils in my mind; at least the beaches will stay cleaner.

I hate it when I see cigarette butts in the sand.

On some beaches there seems to be hundreds scattered all over the place.

Some smokers do not see digging their cigarette butts into the sand as littering, but it is, and it is disgusting.

I know beach cleaners are employed to pick them up, but with hundreds of people on the beaches during the day, this is not always possible.

Woe from Wiggins WHILE Bradley Wiggins should be congratulated on being the first Brit to win the Tour de France, what a shame he let himself down so badly while speaking on the dais with the Arc de Triomphe in the background.

Surely someone from his team should have explained that jokey remarks about the raffle or not drinking too much might go down well in his home town but not in front of the multi-national audience both there and in their homes watching TV. Better would have been, ‘I owe this victory to my mum for helping me, etc.’

Let us hope this young man will be able to repeat his victory and get it right next time. While on the subject, did anyone enjoy that horrendous version of ‘God Save The Queen’ or was it some kind of revenge by the French for not having won their own race in donkey’s years?

Identify priorities SO, Almeria has lost out on an estimated €2.7 million by not having the Extreme Sailing Series Circuit (Issue 1411).

The excuse apparently is that there is a ‘lack of councillors’.

I thought that there were too many councillors getting paid high salaries.

Whatever the case, surely something that can bring in that much money should have been a priority.

Also, an event of that level helps raise the profile of the city.

Blissful time in nature park

READING about the new train that connects Murcia and Zaragoza (Costa Blanca South, Issue 1412) brought back memories of a wonderful trip to see the waterfalls in the Monasterio de Piedra Nature Park in Zaragoza.

There are fabulous walking trails and bridges that take you through the lush, garden-like environment of waterfalls, lagoons, grottos, tiny ferns, mosses and rivulets.

The sound of the water and singing birds is blissful.

Strange decision!

I THOUGHT it strange that Telefonica had renewed the Spanish King’s sonin-law Iñaki Urdangarin’s contract to work for them in the US on a salary of €1.5 million (Issue 1411).

What will they do if he is convicted and has to serve a prison sentence?

If they decide to sack him he will get €4.5 million compensation.

This does not seem to make good business sense to me; I must be missing something.

Anyone care to enlighten me?

Proof in pictures I WAS very surprised to read that fewer British tourists are taking cameras and camcorders on holiday with them (Finance, Issue 1411).

Also, digital camera sales have fallen by 29 per cent since 2006.

Instead people are using the cameras on their smartphone.

While the cameras on smart phones have got better over the years, they do not offer the quality photos that good cameras do.

However, they do offer the convenience of being small and nearly always with you.

Alive and biting THE other night I was bitten by a centipede while asleep. Luckily it was only a young one, about four inches long, so no ill effects other than a panic attack.

I drowned the centipede in the toilet, took some antihistamine, put on an ice pack and waited for my leg to drop off.

Then I remembered that if you have to go to hospital you should take whatever has stung or bit you along.

So I fished out a waterlogged centipede and put it in a jar with a lid on it.

The next morning the centipede was very much alive, having dried out.

The only dead centipede is one that is in several pieces, so keep an eye out in swimming pools, etc, they are not dead, only dormant.

Delayed dismay I WAS disappointed to read that the renovation of the ‘Caminito del Rey’ (Walkway of Death) in Alora have been delayed (Costa del Sol, Issue 1412).

I was looking forward to returning to the gorge and walking the route once it was safe.

Maybe there are other projects that require the money in these difficult economic times.

However, this walk was popular with tourists in the past and could have served to boost tourism in the area for many years to come.

Gobbledygook IN regards to Mike Walsh’s article about using Google translate (Issue 1411).

It might give the general gist of what you want to say, but a lot of the time it comes back as ‘gobbledygook’; at least when translating English into Spanish and vice versa.

At times it can turn out meaning something totally different to what you meant to say, or can be embarrassingly funny.

I have seen this many a time when friends have asked me to check a letter they want to send.

Apart from this, I recommend anyone to make the effort to learn Spanish as without it you lose 50 per cent of the wonderful experience of living here.

Excellent show IT was great to see the horse show on Vera Beach put on by the Hipico Vera riding stables (Almeria, Issue 1411).

This was despite the fact that women and children were not allowed to joust at the Moors and Christians Festival this year.

All the acts were entertaining and the acrobatics’ performance was amazing.

Let us hope that next year jousting will again be allowed.

BUSINESS JARGON: Thinking outside the box! in ‘guns blazing’ and establish some ‘key takeaways’ before someone can start ‘raising all the red flags’. Good grief!

It’s obvious people don’t use anymore what’s called plain English because they’re advised to use ‘consultant speak’. So,

today everyone calls himself an ‘Executive Assistant’, ‘Business Development Manager’ or ‘Project Officer’ who’s ‘ensuring compliance’. Very few people, when asked what work they do, say: “I make phone calls and type stuff.” People don’t (despite what

they say) always appreciate blunt clarity. If G4S had instead said: “We pay guys to stand around and make people feel safer,” they’d have been accused of being unprofessional and not taking it seriously. No one wants to make his job sound less difficult than it already is.

I read the other day about a member of staff at a UK gym whose title was ‘Specialist Membership Consultant’. Her role included jotting down members’ details and using the cash register.

Always called a spade a shovel, myself. Well, off now to have lunch, and then take in a movie.

Language battle rages in Valencia Chaos looms as Google set to change 1,000 Valencian town names

HE continuing Valenciano vs Castellano language battle within the Valencian Community reached a new high last week when the Academia Valenciana de la Llengua (AVL) asked Google to change more than 1,000 Valencian place names on their websites back to their original Valenciano spelling.

A move, it is claimed, that could dramatically reduce tourism and business in the province at a time when it needs the full support of government.

As a direct response, Calpe (Calp) Mayor Cesar Sanchez called an emergency council meeting to discuss the problem.

He commented: “I don’t want the tourism sector to suffer by not promoting the Calpe brand that has worked for more than 40 years in the internet search engines.

“Our web page www.calpe.es receives more than 35,000 visits a month and promotes over 80 per cent of local shops, hotels and restaurants within the tourist market.”

Mayor Sanchez said he will seek a consensus between businesses, citizens and the town hall to find the best solution for the municipality.

A government representative told the EWN that one of the possible solutions is to

The brain actually processes images differently depending on which gender one is looking at, scientists have revealed.

OR me the most exciting part of a trip or vacation is the planning. The anticipation, as Alain De Botton has noted in ‘The Art of Travel’, is often more powerful than the reality of travel itself.

Of course, being lazy, my plans usually involve the internet and the tourist information website of whichever country I am intending to visit. In my youth, as the date of departure approached, I would pack, repack, unpack then pack again delirious with romantic notions of far-flung places and dark strangers. I now tend to pack the evening before and by experience know that the dark strangers tend to be pickpockets not paramours.

A profound fear of flying meant that until quite recently travel for me involved a train or coach, but my desire to visit places outside of Europe eventually overcame that.

My favourite places in the world are airports (having now developed an antidote to the fear which is two parts Cava and one part brandy), service stations and train stations (coach stations on the other hand are surely the inspiration for Dante’s Inferno).

Whilst a student at Lancaster University, I would regularly breakfast at Forton Services, not just because it was open 24 hours and able to pander to my insomnia, but because the smells, brightness and constant flux conjured up for me the nostalgia of travel. The best service stations are undoubtedly in Austria (where one can sample the most delicious fresh bread and purchase boxes of spicy Christmas biscuits); the worst are in the UK. Airports come a close second in the romance stakes, with Changi in Singapore being the best and Heathrow the worst. Gibraltar airport is also

How wonderful to escape the everyday and embark on a journey of self discovery, even if it is only the greasy enjoyment of a ‘full English’ in Benidorm.

Al Gore famously said: “Airplane travel is nature’s way of making you look like your passport photo.” An hour at La Linea bus station will make you look like Charles Manson on crack, but not as charming.

Could it be that the ‘just the facts’ mode of historical inquiry is actually enhanced when ventilated by ‘stories, myths and drama accounts’? Could it be that the story of Samuel and Joseph is most effective when read not as facts, but for its nuanced figurative and suggestive powers?

Might there be merit to non-factual interpretations in recognising that they can act as historical guides and not boundaries?

• Memo to reader: Just as the written record of Samuel and Joseph’s era is somewhat cryptic and incomplete, so too is the physical evidence.

In Granada, the area around the Barrio Realejo was considered to be the primary Jewish quarter even though the synagogues have long given way to mosques and churches.

Granada’s Alhambra certainly needs no introduction. It is important to remember and interesting to imagine Samuel and Joseph, two Jewish ‘viziers’ ruling from this iconic Islamic palace.

In 11th century Malaga, the population was estimated to be about 20,000 inhabitants, of which a mere 200 were Jewish.

The narrow streets around present-day Buenavista Palace (which houses the Museo Picasso Malaga) was in fact the ancient Jewish quarter.

It is quite possible that this very area is where young Samuel wandered the streets selling spices.

Although little physical evidence remains today, consider wandering these streets… stories abound!

HE Brits, which include the Irish, are much criticised for being mono-lingual; as the English language is international they have an excuse.

Spain has little to crow about in this respect; their familiarity with the English language is not as hot as their climate.

Spain ranks an abysmal ninth on the scale of European countries. Not good, especially when you consider its biggest earner, second only to the US, is tourism.

It means of course that tens of millions of tourists, of all nationalities, visiting rival destinations are more likely to be understood. The fact is, Spain should be Number One, but it is not.

Having a beer a ‘little luxury’ in hard times CRISIS or no crisis, 60 per cent of Spaniards have no intention of foregoing their beer.

Lack of funds has prompted 74 per cent to eliminate concerts and the theatre from their budgets, while 63 per cent economise on cinema outings. Nevertheless, 60 per cent still find the wherewithal for a beer, found a recent survey for Spanish brewers’ association, Cerveceros de España.

This is most noticeable in the provinces of Badajoz and Caceres (Extremadura) where 77 per cent spare cash for a caña, followed by the Basque Region (76 per cent).

In contrast, only 54 per cent in the Canary Islands and 52 per cent in Galicia are reluctant to cut down on beer money.

Although 24 per cent are happy to have a beer at home, 73 per cent like to go out for it, researchers found.

Going out for a beer is the preferred paid-for leisure activity of 44 per cent of those asked, compared with 31 per cent who opt for weekend excursions or 29 per cent who dine out with family or friends.

Beer is also the most popular premeal aperitif for 94 per cent of

HERE are certain Spanish pastimes that should be undertaken only with extreme caution and after a long, soul-searching discussion with yourself, your nearest and dearest. Running with the bulls in Pamplona is one; getting behind the wheel of a car another.

There is something about this joyfully relaxed and generally pacified lot that sends them into a tailspin when it comes to driving: Leisurely concepts of mañana are abandoned by their inner racing driver in a bid to arrive ayer even if it is just to make it home in time for tapas.

In fact, there is no wonder there are so many drunk-drivers out there; you need a stiff one before embarking on these motorways from Hell. The school drop-off is more akin to running the gauntlet: keep up or be unceremoniously shoved off the road by a lorry driver. Seasoned motorists admit that driving is more of a pursuit than a purpose, and you have to come to love these daily chases to survive.

ROAD RAGE: Spain has the drivers from Hell. white knuckles and gasps of horror, proclaiming they will never, ever drive in this country.

But as a resident you don’t have much choice.

At times, the pace turns to standstill or snail as we sidle past yet another crash scene straight from the pages of Armageddon; stretchers and ambulances at the ready. It is practically a daily occurrence and just a matter of

time... Meanwhile, the Guardia Civil seem more interested in catching those hardened criminals who have momentarily forgotten to renew their tax or change licence plates than stopping reckless drivers.

Amidst all the lose cannon on the roads, there’s the other type of driver that leaves me dumbfounded - the motorcyclist who insists on tearing around the

streets at breakneck speed in nothing but bikinis, shorts and flip-flops; the helmet really is cursory by then and it is hardly surprising that most fatal road accidents involve motorcyclists.

Enough of the rant and the rave and now for some constructive suggestions, since most of us are unable to avoid venturing onto the roads once more. Firstly, wear protective

Enjoying a colourful August garden

L

UCKILY, most of the plants in our garden are not thirsty ones so the continuing drought conditions have been no real headache.

But with moisture tables dropping potentially lower than the depth of the deepest roots, we do walk the garden daily to see if any plants are overstressed. Naturally, some plants look rather dry by the end of the day because this is their defence mechanism but by morning they look fine again.

Plants in flower include bougainvillaeas, bignonias, jasmine, echiums, geraniums, hibiscus, lavender, leonotis oleanders, bird of paradise, lilies, passion flowers, petunias, plumbago, portulacas, roses, society garlic, verbena and looking out of the window sunflowers.

Yesterday reached almost 40 degrees Celsius but this morning at 6.30am, when Dick started to plant some extra climbing red paella beans and butter beans for autumn harvesting, the temperature had dropped to 16 degrees and shoes were soon wet with dew.

Received a bill from the Mancomunidad?

ANYONE buying a property in Spain knows or soon finds out that they have to pay rates to their town hall and usually fees to their community. The surprise comes when they find they are also paying a bill from something called a ‘Mancomunidad’.

Most properties are either part of an urbanisation or an apartment building where the owners form a community and are collectively responsible for the internal running costs of their community – maintenance, insurance, administration etc.

These costs are then divided between the owners and each pays their share. In municipal areas, the town hall will pay for the external running costs rubbish collection, street cleaning, lighting, public gardens and similar.

The residents then pay their rates or IBI, as it is known and maybe one or two other taxes to cover these costs. With town hall rates no extra charges are suddenly levied to cover breakages, theft or extraordinary work. All fairly normal and understandable.

In some communities and urbanisations, responsibility for road repairs, street lighting, neighbourhood cleaning, sewage pipes etc has not been adopted by the town hall and the cost of these facilities and services must be paid by the local community themselves.

However, if such facilities are used by more than one urbanisation or community, then the costs and the responsibility falls to all the communities involved and a Mancomunidad or EUC

Just as an urbanisation is a community of owners, a Mancomunidad is a community of communities or urbanisations. It is governed by the same laws and acts in the same way, taking responsibility for the costs and the running of shared facilities.

It can form committees, appoint an administrator and make decisions, its members are the elected presidents of the communities involved. It is a commonwealth of mutual interest, that pools responsibility and resources.

The Mancomunidad also send out bills to their communities.

A home or business owner in such a situation will have to pay out to their town hall, their community and their Mancomunidad.

Mancomunidad bills, unlike the town hall rates, also include the costs incurred for extraordinary works plus unforeseen and additional expenses that are associated with these maintenance or repair costs.

As a Mancommunidad is not part of the town hall, nor therefore its budget, sensible communities and their Mancomunidad will have a financial reserve, a buffer, as costs can be steep and sudden. In some areas the Mancomunidad is even responsible for the large mains electrical substations, the transformers.

Owners may complain why should I pay these Mancomunidad fees as well as town hall rates? Quite simply the local town hall, may not be and never has been, responsible for the up-keep of certain areas.
