Moclinejo will not be first ‘gay town’ THE town of Moclinejo will not be painted pink to attract gay tourists. The organiser of the International Gay Trade Fair ‘Expogays’ in Torremolinos, Javier Checa had proposed to make the typical white-washed, 1,200 person town into the first gay village in the world. The idea would be to

create gay-friendly spaces including a ‘cruising’ park, where same sex encounters would not be frowned upon and a 600 home housing complex for gay tourists painted pink. The proposal also included naming several streets after famous artists from the Lesbian, Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community.

According to Mayor Antonio Muñoz (PP), “the construction promoters never asked for a building licence,” despite the strong media reaction that attracted “phone calls from all over the world from people who were interested.” The mayor also stated the project would be allowed as long as it did

not include ‘risqué ideas’ like the cruising park. However the work did not move forward. Checa said people misunderstood his proposal, and seemed to believe he wanted to create a tourist ‘ghetto’ for members of the LGBT community. He clarified he was simply interested in focusing on the LGBT population to offer them a different tourist product. Checa also stated even though the idea did not succeed in Moclinejo, he thinks it will thrive somewhere else, because “many people wanted to invest money in the project.”

THE centric ‘San Miguel’ School in Nerja was recently robbed of several musical instruments and technological equipment.
