Protestors strip off at anti-bullfighting rally A GROUP of 20 half-naked young men and women gathered in Palma’s Plaza España to protest against bullfighting, a ‘sport’ that ‘deceivingly’ attracts many tourists.

Protesters from the antibullfighting group, AnimaNaturalis, spelled out the word ‘Stop’ by laying on the ground in their underwear while another 50 volunteers handed out pamphlets and information regarding bullfights, according to the group’s co-ordinator, Guillermo Amengual.

Amengual spoke about tourists’ experiences with bullfighting in Mallorca, explaining that whether it is in Muro or Alcudia, tourists are, ‘fooled into entering the bullrings’.

“They are sold an unreal show: a show where there is no blood or torture,” said Amengual, adding: “They leave crying and wanting to report their guides for selling them such a spectacle.”

Pharmaceutical sales drop in July PHARMACEUTICAL sales in Palma dropped by 15 to 20 per cent during the month of July, when new co-payment policies kicked in.

It is what Antoni Real, president of the Pharmaceutical Association, called “a drastic decrease” that many pharmacists noticed while dispensing medication.

The change comes as a stark contrast to the increase in sales during June when

many retirees stocked up on their free medication before a new law requiring them to pay for prescriptions came into effect on July 1, said Real.

However, the June sales did not compensate for the lack of sales in July according to the Association’s president who calculated an 8 per cent increase in sales before the introduction of copayments.

The co-payment determined by income, was introduced by the government to save €7 billion. Pensioners who earn less than €18,000 a year pay 10 per cent of the price of medication without exceeding €8 a month, an amount that reaches €18 for those who earn more than €18,000. Retirees earning more than €100,000 pay 60 per cent or no more than €60 per month.

An added alert is that hormones are also responsible for reducing the feeling of culpability, making people more likely to be unfaithful.

According to university studies in the US, high testosterone levels prove that falling in love is all about biology.

Catalan required for civil servants

CATALAN continues to be a requirement for 10 per cent of the civil servants in the Balearic Islands’ General Services department.

This percentage translates to 645 workers who need to know the regional language. Of those positions, only 479 are currently active and filled by personnel. Last Saturday an official bulletin regarding a change to the Law of Public Works of the Baleares was made public.

Modifications to the law eliminated the demand that all public workers speak Catalan, with the exception of those positions including telephone services and linguistics. However, the regional government approved the requirement of the language in 10 per cent of the public service positions.

This year, prompted by spending cuts and cutbacks in public sector employees, those choosing this option dropped to 26 per cent.

Twenty-eight per cent would prefer to work where they lived, they told pollsters, compared with 34 per cent in 2011.

unions. Companies with three consecutive months of losses are also allowed to dismiss workers with 20 days’ severance pay for each year worked.

The ruling follows rejection of ERE applications from DOPEC in Cataluña and Talleres A in Madrid which rescinded workers’ contracts, alleging economic problems.

Both companies belong to larger groups, judges pointed out, and the economic situation of the entire group should be taken into consideration when justifying dismissals on the grounds of losses.

The courts have also made it clear that the documentation submitted to justify workforce reductions must faithfully reflect the company’s situation.

For the last four years, the basements of our building have been occupied by the works department of the Ayuntamiento of Casares.

This entails storage and maintenance of tractors, JCBs, road-sweepers, beach-cleaners and other large machines. They are in the basements and also parked just beyond our perimeter fence. Unsightly, smelly and noisy, the operation of these vehicles starts from 7am, even at weekends. We have approached the supervisor on several occasions and he promises things will improve, but nothing ever alters.

A lawyer should prepare this letter. If they do not rectify the situation, the community can then vote to authorise the president to go to court to compel them to stop. The final threat is that a member of a community can be barred from using his/her own property for up to two years.

Perhaps Nature will intervene with a deadly, uncontrollable epidemic; or maybe mankind will finally lose the plot, and by unleashing a global atomic war, cure over-population.

Either or both would probably do the trick!

Tax freedom day is the day each year when you finally stop working to pay tax to the government, and start earning money for yourself.

According to the 2012 study, Belgium has the latest tax freedom day. Taxpayers have to work up to 5th August simply to earn enough to pay taxes. France takes second place honours, with a date of 26th June. Last year it came third, but Hungary has slipped two places down the list thanks to its flat tax regime. Malta has the earliest tax freedom in the EU, falling on just 11th April, five days earlier than last year. Cyprus comes second on the list with a date of 10th May. This is bad news for Cyprus taxpayers, since last year it arrived almost two months earlier on 13th March.

Spain’s tax freedom day fell on 23rd May, four days later than in 2011.

Portugal’s shifted from 29th May to 3rd June.

Taxpayers in countries like the US and Australia fare much better than us Europeans.

Their tax freedom days were 17th April and 4th April respectively.

Blevins Franks provides tax planning advice in France, Spain, Portugal, Cyprus and Malta, advising expatriates on

how to use approved arrangements on how to lower the tax liabilities on their savings, investments, pensions and estate.

The Institut Economique Molinari also pointed out that across the EU as a whole, the non-working population now make up 54.7% of the population, while “tax-wise, working people must carry most of the weight – a weight that grows heavier as populations grow even older”.

So even after the current economic situation has improved, countries may still need to keep taxes higher to provide funds for their increasing pension and social welfare costs brought about by an ageing population.

Many countries across the world calculate their tax freedom day – though it tends to be private institutes and companies which do this, rather than the government.

They use different methodologies, which is why you may come across different dates for the same country.

In its calculations, the Institut Economique Molinari looks at income tax, social

security contributions and VAT. It calculated that the UK had a tax freedom day of 12th May. It is interesting to compare this to the separate study on the UK tax burden carried out by the Adam Smith Institute (ASI).

Its methodology includes indirect, local and stealth taxes - and under its calculations tax freedom day did not arrive until 29th May. This means that for 149 days of the year, every penny earned by the average UK resident was taken by the government in tax.

ASI Director, Eamonn Butler, said: "Tax Freedom Day, which the Adam Smith Institute has been calculating for 25 years, is the plainest way to show what the tax burden really is. That is why the Treasury hates it. They of course want to conceal how much tax we pay, which is why they are so keen on stealth taxes."

Tax freedom day measures the money raised by the government in taxes. It does not consider the amount it borrows and spends, so ASI also calculates a “Cost of

Government Day” to show the extent of the UK’s debt. The debt will have to be repaid eventually, with taxpayers picking up the bill.

The government borrows one pound for every four it raises in taxes, so the cost of government day fell on 23rd June this year.

British taxpayers worked 175 days to cover the government’s spending and borrowing.

These are taxing times for taxpayers, and not just for workers as retirees are also faced with higher taxes.

In many cases, however, there are still steps you can take to lighten your tax burden. While we all have to pay our share of taxes, you won’t want to pay more than you have to.

Economic gloom takes the cheer out of a homely tipple THE findings leave little room for doubts.

A survey in Spain has spelled out that although 24 per cent of people are happy to have a beer at home, 73 per cent like to go out for a drink.

In fact, researchers for Cerveceros de Espana, the Spanish brewers association, discovered that going out for a beer is the preferred paid-for leisure activity for 44 per cent of the Spanish asked.

Meanwhile, 31 per cent of those included in the survey opted for weekend excursions, and 29 per cent for dining out with family and friends.

These tough economic times are clearly affecting the drinking patterns of family members, especially at home. For in Britain another survey just published shows that fewer people now stock up on alcohol to drink at home.

HOME CHEER: Fewer people now drink at home.

Last year, home alcohol usage was 4 per cent less among people in the UK than in 2006.

But while the percentage of households having a tipple in home comfort has dropped from 75 to 71 per cent, research by Mintel, a global research and consumer use company with offices worldwide, including London, shows that drinkers in the 18-24 age bracket are more likely to pay attention to the level of alcohol strength in drinks than those aged 25-64.

Not only are overall levels of drinking at home falling, but also the frequency, with a clear shift over the 200611 period away from heavy usage, with now 41 per cent of households drinking two, three or more times a week, compared to 46 per cent in 2006.

Alex Beckett, Senior Food and Drink Analyst at Mintel, said: “As a nation wellacquainted with booze, most adults in the UK have a vague idea of their drink’s strength. Younger people drink more and are more

likely to drink purely to get drunk, so their interest in the strength could relate to pacing their intake or that they’re eager to consume the most intoxicating drink. “But hampered with tighter household budgets, people have cut back on drinking in the home, though it remains the more affordable alternative to drinking in a pub or bar to the detriment of on-trade growth.�

In-home drinking market sales fell 1.7 per cent between 2010 and last year to 3.7 billion litres, as squeezed household incomes, rising prices and health awareness hit penetration. DON’T be left in any doubt. Even in these tough economic times, many people including tens of thousands throughout Europe - enjoy very privileged lifestyles.

Problems at home can add up even for very wealthy THEY not only have plenty of spending power for luxuries including topof-the-range cars, luxury holidays, regular spa visits and meals out at top restaurants, but many have two, three and even more homes.

With such real estate holdings, even in these dire times, worrying over personal budgets is not an aspect of life.

But having oodles of money and a choice of residences does not mean the wealthy avoid all concerns, with high up on their listed worries being finding good staff with issues of trust, security and training.

For many others among the world’s wealthy, the alternative is to fly their own chosen staff in. One Arab with a residence in Sotogrande on the Costa del Sol, and other global homes in London, Washington and Beirut, as well as his main base in Kuwait, never hires staff locally. “My wife has three housemaids who know our exact dietry needs, and they have been with us for more than 30 years and helped raise our children. I also have a driver plus a general assistant who knows exactly how we like things done and when. “All our children regard them almost as extended family, so whenever we spend time in Spain we fly them in ahead of us to open the house for three months, and then when the family and friends join us for holiday breaks, everyone feels comfortable... secure, and happy.�

How did you get into racing?

My dad introduced me to it. He was a speed freak and fan of Formula One ace Senna but never had time to do anything in the sport, so enjoyed going with me to race tracks. Since then everything started rolling.

Most notable awards?

The Intercontinental A championship in Andalucia in 2001 when I drove a Road Rebel, team tag race endurance, single endurance, and extreme conditions championship - on test track - in which I drove a Formula F3.

Scariest experience?

Overtaking two cars which were

overtaking each other. I went for the gap and the back tyre lost grip and the car smashed at high speed into a safety wall. I bruised my rib, split my lip, and damaged my wrist, and also broke the helmet.

Favourite memory?

Winning a race with a brake failure in wet conditions.

Current work?

Setting up my own racing team, teaching new talented drivers, pushing them to win titles and become a well recognised race team.

Future plans?

Keep on racing, family, two children and who knows what else will come.

These are difficult times and it is understandable that the state television and radio prefers not to rub salt into the wounds of a wounded society. But

while shooting the messenger is a classic response to unwelcome news, silencing the message is the classic response of the politically insecure.

Tickets to ride SPAIN’S autonomies are draining the central government’s falling resources, and the State Council president has suggested slimming down the costly system. Only 30 per cent of Spaniards want to keep the autonomies as they are and 40 per cent believe changes should be made. Unsurprisingly, regional politicians of all hues leap to their defence.

IT is a shame that a staged food grab was the only way for supermarkets to agree to give the items to a Sevilla food bank (Costa del Sol, Issue 1414).

The amount of food that must go to waste is criminal. Surely as ‘nonperishable’ goods get within a week of their sell-by date they could be given to the food banks all over the country.

Of course, they would then need to be passed on straight away to those in need, but with queues outside many places, I doubt this will be a problem.

Likewise, every supermarket should allow the food banks to place a locked bin with a hole in it so shoppers can place an item in it.

Behind the times MIKE WALSH’S Images of Spain article regarding the lack of understanding of English by Spanish people is very true (Issue 1413). It also applies to other issues in Spanish society.

Both my parents are Spanish, but I was born in London.

Recently moving to Spain, I have met nothing but miserable, arrogant, rude, obnoxious, lazy Spanish people.

Because of them, it has taken me seven months to fix my paperwork.

They are behind by decades in technology, transport, work production, health and safety, schooling, among others. They are unwilling to change, to give up their siesta, to work and catch up with their European neighbours.

As a construction manager back in England, I made it a rule never to employ Spanish, Portuguese, Italian or Greek labour as they would regularly arrive late and extend their tea breaks.

No Spanish labour force would survive a week in England. They are no match for Eastern European labour. Spain only has the weather in its favour.

This is such a worthy cause. These Butterfly children, and adults, have to live in constant pain, even with pain medication.

Beauty spot....or a health hazard?

THIS is the state of the small lake at Parque de las Medranas, outside the main lake used by Cable Ski, San Pedro de Alcantara.

No information was forthcoming from Aquagest men when asked if there is anything they are meant to be doing with it. The water level just dropped from one afternoon to the following morning to literally a puddle.

It will stink. The carp and few goldfish will invariably die and the kingfishers and turtles will also be affected when the river which runs by the side of the driving range dries up.

It is such a shame to let a place of natural beauty become a health hazard.

Security concern BETWEEN checking in at Alicante airport and arriving at Exeter airport, several things were missing from my son’s and family’s suitcases, which had been bought in Spain.

One of the items was a gift for my granddaughter.

My point is that if things can be removed from suitcases, so can things be put in, like an explosive device.

Security must be very lax, so if things can be smuggled out, they can also be smuggled in.

Mad dogs and...

ONLY mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun, is what came to mind when reading that 40 people required emergency medical assistance in Almeria due to the extreme temperatures (Issue 1414).

However, I feel the Spanish no longer have need of the siesta break if their work involves being in an airconditioned office.

During the peak sun hours, when the weather is this hot, it is foolish to be outside in the heat.

If it is unavoidable, take a hand fan, plenty of water, wear a sunhat, sunglasses, and slap on the SPF30 sunscreen.

Looky away FURTHER to S Wallis’s letter (Issue 1410) about showing respect to the looky-looky men, I ask whether they show any respect to Spanish law and taxpaying shopkeepers trying to make a living.

It would be lovely to go out to a restaurant or bar without being hassled by these illegal traders. They know they are illegal or why else would they flee at the sight of police?

I frequently visit Puerto Pollenca (Mallorca) where police seem only to be tackling the problem half-heartedly.

If they were serious, they would have plain-clothes officers walking along the seafront, which would be more effective, giving out hefty fines and confiscating goods.

Whenever traders set up stalls along the seafront, they have to obtain a licence from the town hall, I assume at a cost. In front of these stalls, looky-

Port much worse I TAKE issue with Peter Twelftree’s point of view (Letters, Issue 1414) that the thoroughfare in Javea Port is better off empty.

To have a viable, thriving port area, we need successful businesses. The removal of the tables and chairs has brought many of Javea’s trademark restaurants to their knees and more to follow. Reduced employment in the restaurants is already evident.

It has become more of a cycle track.

If the sign that asks them to dismount was adhered to then the pathway would be more than adequate for pedestrians even with the tables and chairs.

The mayor is enforcing a law that is not conducive to tourism. Other towns have used a common sense approach, allowing restaurants some leeway during the busy tourist months as Javea does for the chiringuitos.

I think Mr Twelftree will find he is in a minority that would like to see the beach bars also close, a recipe for a ghost town.

Clueless view I WAS not surprised to read that many people are clueless about Geography (Costa del Sol, Issue 1414). However, the British are not the only ones.

I am Danish and while travelling in Asia hotel staff asked where I was from. When I told the person, he asked me if that was in America. I said no, it is in Europe. He looked at me, puzzled, and asked: “Europe is not in America?”

I imagine this person was not well educated and that is what it all boils down to.

Oily solution OLIVE OIL splashed on your clothes is a horror story. It never comes out.

I have tried everything, including leaving a white garment in almost neat bleach overnight, but to no avail.

The other day oil splattered onto a brand new blue top, and a friend told me a tip that worked.

Crush up a dishwasher tab in a cup and add a small amount of water to make it like a paste. Place the dry garment onto a flat table and put generous portions of the mix onto the oil stains. Leave overnight.

In the morning, rinse the garment in the sink to remove the dried mix and then wash with your normal soap powder/liquid.

Of course, I was only referring to a specific area.

Although I enjoy them, I know very little about the equestrian, sailing or rowing events or indeed most of the other sports that generally receive minimum coverage by the media. But I do know my athletics. Therefore, my prediction was obviously only referring to those

events.

My only miscalculation was generalising and not spelling it out! Well, surprise, surprise. In total there are 47 track and field events in these Olympics.

At the time of writing, the Games are almost over. To date, our track and field athletes have taken just six medals: four gold, one silver and one bronze. That means we’ve failed miserably in 41 of the

events that most consider the core of the Olympiad.

One commentator actually admitted he would never have imagined he would be cheering on a British competitor for seventh place!! (Mind you, compared with the utterly incompetent Denise Lewis, who remarked that one entrant was suffering from ‘lack of inexperience’, I suppose that observation was almost acceptable.)

No, I’m sorry. Overall our athletic and field competitors have been abysmal and my predictions proven correct.

Well done, our splendid winners in all the other categories. All I can say is thank the Lord you were there.

WELL, well, I have received some stick over my predictions that Team GB competitors could prove a medal embarrassment in these Olympic Games.

Some of the correspondence did hold constructive criticism, but most was downright nasty.

HE month of July was not at all kind to the euro.

From start to finish it fell by 3 per cent against the pound and was the month’s worst-performing major currency.

As usual the euro was shadowed by its alter-ego, the Swiss franc.

That poor overall result does, however, conceal a late rush by the euro.

In the last week of the month and at the very beginning of August it raised its game, recovering two of the five cents it had at one point been in danger of losing.

The debate will surely rumble on through the European holiday month but disaster is no longer imminent.

So, should we be worried about Twitter which has become part of the daily life of millions in Britain and tens of millions more around the world - and avoid it, too?

Now, ‘celebrities’ who use Twitter are being naïve. Prior to its invention, would they have actively published and publicised their email address and phone number to the world in general rather than just to family and friends? I don’t think so.

Why not?

Because they wouldn’t have wanted to attract attention from people they didn’t know, who might bombard them with abuse/practical

jokes or even harass them over time. That’s why, after all, so many people opt to be exdirectory as far as their phone numbers are concerned.

A recipient can ignore ‘trolls’, block them or simply switch off the phone.

Otherwise, apart from threats or libels, you just have to accept or ignore offensive behaviour via this medium as you would a spoken or written comment.

‘If you play with fire, you’re going to get burned’ should be the mantra of any twit who uses Twitter!

In other words, why blame Twitter itself ?

You might as well blame BT or Telefonica for abusive phone calls.

This is just the same as blaming guns for killing people. They don’t.

People do.

RECENTLY I took part in a public survey whereby people, males and females alike, from all walks of life, between the ages of 17 and 77, were asked what annoys and/or irritates you most of all.

Here are some of the ‘most annoying things’ in the life of a Brit, which came out of the poll – and like you, some really get up my wick! * ARROGANT PEOPLE... Someone who thinks he/she are the cat’s whiskers. * KNOW-ALLS... Those who sulk, then disappear when they can’t give the right answer! * QUIZ MOANERS ... Participants (or one person) who say ‘Oh, not sport, or oh, not pop music?’ So why enter in the first place? What would you expect on Pointless, The Chase or The Weakest Link? * RUDE, MISERABLE SHOP ASSISTANTS... It costs nothing to put a smile on your face or indeed, some lipstick round your mouth when serving a customer! * THE PUSHCHAIR PUSHING PARENT... She (or he) who slowly but surely, without a please or may I, guides a buggy down the centre of an aisle, over the footpath or in and out of the crowd at a packed street market, muttering ‘get out of the way.’ * BOSSINESS... You can be bossy in your own home at any time - but you look (and perhaps feel) like a real idiot when shouting your mouth off in public! * SINGER WHO MIMES OR CAN’T SING AT ALL... DOG WALKERS: When walking your dog, make sure you clean up any mess. indicate... Yes, sir or madam, you, the driver who chooses to turn right or left into a side road at the very last second when the person behind you least expects it. Also, those inconsiderate drivers who cruise slowly down the outside lane of a motorway, highway or freeway, and all those who tend to get right up against (even inside) your boot! * ENTER VIA THE EXIT, EXIT VIA THE ENTRANCE... The customer (he or she) who bustles into a shop/supermarket through the exit door and blames you for being in the way... or the customer who goes in the other

direction, out through the designated entry door, assuming the same thing! * MOBILE TALKERS... Those of you who talk loudly into a mobile phone when you are in a restaurant/bar/hotel, or even in company! Go 25 or so yards away… we don’t want to know what’s going on in your life (your partner might though)! * DOG WALKERS... Take your pet for a walk by all means, but please clean up it’s mess. The animal itself can’t do it! * LITTER LOUTS... Yes, they’re still around, hundreds of ‘em. Come on councillors, get your fingers out and start imposing those fines right now.

And finally, here’s a few more things that must surely irritate most of you: * Outrageously loud talkers (irrespective as to where they are) * A poor or slow internet connection * The numerous foreign call centres * Those people who cough and sneeze and do not bother to put a hand to their mouth * Poor (and rude) customer service * Spam and junk mail... pesty flies, wasps and mozzies * Noisy eaters * People who would do better with a dustbin lid rather than stacking up a plate when selecting food at a selfservice buffet * Someone who jumps the queue at a bar when he/she and the person serving, knows you were first! * And last by no means least, irresponsible people who complain about their own weight (and sometimes that of others) yet make no effort to exercise or eat properly to reduce it themselves.

Back pain suffered by young Brits

By Vicky Knill THEY should be in their prime, but a recent study shows British young people suffer from back pain and from more common illnesses than older people.

The survey revealed that a third of 16-24 year olds suffered from back pain and that 61% suffered from headaches, compared with 31% of over 65 year olds. The younger group also polled at above the national average for sore throats, coughs and colds or flu.

“The high incidence of back pain in Britain’s youngsters is pretty alarming,” says Michelle Strutton from Mintel, who carried out the survey, citing British youngsters’ sedentary lifestyle as the probable cause.

However, Dr. Francisco Kovacs from the Spanish Network of Researchers on Back Problems says “The frequency of back pain is very similar in all the industrialised countries and in all age brackets.”

So what should the young, and the young at heart, being doing to help with their back pain?

“The most effective methods of prevention are, without doubt, exercise and health education.

Happy ‘Deathday’ greetings SWISS researchers found that you are 14 per cent more likely to die on your birthday than at any other time.

As well as deaths caused by ‘falling down’ (which actually increased before birthdays too, but only among men) or committing suicide, deaths from natural causes (such as heart disease, stroke and cancer) also increased.

The study also found that the probability of death from cancer increased still further the day after your birthday.

Some scientists claim that this supports the “postponement” theory; the idea that the terminally ill may be able to put off dying until after an important date.

This claim was supported in 2006 when a separate study by Australian economists revealed the number of deaths fell just before the abolition of inheritance tax and increased afterwards.

The researchers themselves drew the opposite conclusions however, saying the results pointed to ‘anniversary reaction’, or death caused by birthday stress.

Super antibody for flu A ‘SUPER ANTIBODY’ against flu has been identified by scientists offering hope of a universal jab to wipe out the infection.

The jab could also be used in severe infections or to protect hospital staff during an outbreak.

Scientists have identified three human antibodies which protect against the influenza B strain and one, called CR9114, which also protects against the more common and serious influenza A virus.

Several visitors from overseas offered a negative review of the caterers’ attempt at their national cuisine. “It doesn’t look like Mexican. It looks like it’s from the US. We’re not insulted but they really don’t know about Mexican food.” said Jesus Bernal, from Mexico speaking to the Guardian.

Meanwhile the response from British visitors wasn’t much better. One British

diner was less than impressed with his oriental-style prawn dish, or as he called it ‘gravy and prawns’. “Perhaps it was a classic example of British eccentricity of the kind we saw in the opening ceremony,” he added.

There have also been complaints about the lack of water available and of long queues for food in the Olympic park. Visitors are forbidden to bring bottles bigger than 100ml and ‘excessive amounts of food’ into the park. The park is home to the world’s largest McDonald’s.

can barely find my way to the kitchen, so when I stumbled across the possibility of finding myself, I was intrigued - though not entirely optimistic about the outcome.

I had done the odd yoga class before but this promised to be something more meditation, spiritual enlightenment and so forth.

My Ommm moment here in the Tramuntana mountains, overlooking a gently lapping, swooning sea and a setting sun. If I could not find my inner self here, all hope was lost.

A group of some 10 additional delegates share the experience, though they all appear to be far more in tune with themselves, osmosis and the universe than I. And while I have arrived in my lycra gym gear, their harem trousers and earth-coloured tanktops make me look as if Minnie Mouse has wrongfully appeared in Gone with the Wind.

“Clear your mind of zee endless chatter,” our German primate instructor - or guide as he calls himself - chants to us in a melodic manner. He is a perfect blend of Michael Bolton and Mikhail Baryshnikov with only a hint of Herr Flick.

traveling through our bodies collecting all aches, pains and worries on its way. “Feel zee light in your belly!” Michael hums, but I can mainly feel it rumbling.

Hmm - what did I need to buy from the supermarket on the way back? Definitely some of those fresh ensaimadas…

definitely not wine, my body being such a temple and all.

Or perhaps a converted ruin spruced up - would be a better description.

So, some vegetables and fruit would be good, too.

I am quite warming to this.

Can really visualise that beacon of light above my head. It’s making me feel quite snoozy…

“Hello?” I hear the melodic voice very close. “ ‘Allo, ‘Allo,” I mumble back, opening my eyes…

Michael is peering at me, only a tad concerned. “You achieved deep relaxation, no?”

“Ahem, yes sorry… “ I mumble back, as I notice that I am the only one left in a horizontal position. I really hope I didn’t snore. It would not have been very Zen like - Buddha would not have approved.

So on this short journey of selfdiscovery, I didn’t exactly find myself, but then I hadn’t necessarily lost myself beforehand. Who’s to say that I was not always destined to be a somewhat neurotic busybody in the first place?

And I always have that lovely ball of light to keep me warm on a dark night.

Dress like a demon and run with fire I

T’S not a good weekend on Mallorca unless you have been chased by a lunatic wielding a chainsaw!

If you live on the island you will know what I mean. If you are just visiting I had better explain before you start to question the company that I keep.

One of the traditional events during the fiestas here is the ‘Correfoc’ which literally means ‘running with fire’.

In this jolly jape local folk dress up as demons (in really scary costumes) and chase people through the streets with flames and chainsaws, letting off fireworks and singeing hair as they go.

It is a health-andsafety officer’s worst nightmare and the first time you find yourself in the middle of a spray of sparks it can be nerveracking. I once had the satisfaction of seeing a teenager reduced from a cocky so-and-so to a gibbering wreck, clinging to his mother’s skirt as he experienced his first (and probably last) Correfoc.

However, it is all relatively safe, good fun with only the odd scorch mark to worry about, so if you get the chance put on a wet T-shirt and go running with the fire this summer.

These are the ‘secret’ fiestas (as I call them) that just happen magically when the bunting goes up overnight and the BBQ gets fired up without warning. I am sure it is tricky for a selfrespecting demon to know where to be at any one time.

Beating the heat with night-time fairs THE heatwave that hit Mallorca did not deter residents or tourists from enjoying night-time fairs organised in different towns.

Despite the temperatures recently dropping back down a couple degrees, Monday was the first day free of heat warnings after five days on yellow alert.

During that period temperatures reached up to nine degrees (Celsius) more than the island’s average for the

month of August.

Port de Valldemossa and Banyalbufar residents suffered most with night-time temperatures registering at 26 degrees while those staying in la Colonia de Sant Pere or Cala Rajada experienced 25degree nights.

Amidst the high temperatures, people on the island still enjoyed their summer evenings by stopping by at the nighttime fairs held in various towns.

Residencia or tax resident? It pays to know the difference! “... but he was resident.

Look, here is proof - his residencia and mine!” So cries many a poor widow (about to become even poorer) to her lawyer, as she struggles with the sad task of sorting out the Spanish estate of her husband.

Ask any lawyer dealing in probate and they will recount similar words from many an expatriate (of either sex), as they find that their partner’s estate is not eligible for the full range of Spanish inheritance tax exemptions because they were not Spanish tax resident.

Having residency and being Spanish tax resident, as many people find out to their cost, are two completely different things and can have a serious bearing upon the amount of inheritance tax an estate has to pay.

Unfortunately, many foreigners simply do not understand the difference between being tax resident and having residencia, despite it being very important.

Indeed, confuse these two concepts and you can either end up handing the Spanish state a good deal of money (unnecessarily) or leave your family in desperate straits.

By Spanish law, if you stay in Spain for three months or longer, it is obligatory to register yourself on the Register of Foreigners (Registro de Ciudadanos

within the parameters of someone whose income is below that required to submit an annual income tax return.

As everyone knows, if you live in Spain for 183 days or over or have your main residence or main business in the country then you can be deemed to be tax resident and therefore are obliged to make a tax return.

However, there is a big difference between being deemed to be tax resident and actually making a tax return!

Unfortunately, many foreigners in Spain conveniently ‘forget’ to become tax resident and then when they or their partner’s estate gets hit by significant (and avoidable) inheritance tax they claim that the deceased should be treated, in any event, as tax resident. However, this argument does not ‘wash’ with the authorities. You have either made a tax return or not or are below the minimum tax threshold!

The bottom line, of course, is that you may not need free Spanish

healthcare or most of the benefits on offer and you may think that ‘forgetting’ to become tax resident will bring no penalties.

Sadly, that is not the case as, when you die, the ultimate ‘penalty’ may fall upon your immediate family and any co-owner of your property, by which time it is far too late to rectify any misconceptions about residency and being tax resident.

The Kingdom of Asturias... a bellwether of sorts

OCATED in north west Spain, The Region of Asturias, or more correctly, The Kingdom of Asturias, is one of this remote area is bounded Spain’s smallest, least populated and isolated regions. What became known as The Asturian Miners Strike of 1934, foretold the perfect storm of the very same political actors and intense ideologies that was, in two years time, to become Spain’s darkest hour.

Historic Asturias From the 8th century repelling of the Moors, to the successful guerilla tactics resisting Napoleon, to the prelude uprising of the 1934 Asturian Miners Strike, the brave and rugged people of Asturias have continually signalled the approach of future trends that have loomed large in Spain’s rich history.

Spain has done honour to that legacy by calling the heir to her throne the ‘Prince of Asturias.’

Furthermore, this venerated heir gives out the prestigious ‘Asturias Awards’ which, similar to the Nobel prizes, bestows recognition upon those citizens who best exhibit mankind’s most positive virtues.

It is no accident that Spain has linked the name Asturias to such honorary recognitions.

Memo to the reader: If you are within the normal orbit of The Euro Weekly News readership area, there probably isn’t a more distant point on the Iberian Peninsula than Asturias. Do not let this deter you from a visit to this incredible region. Known as ‘Green Spain’ due to its rainfall, cooler temperatures and varied flora and fauna, Asturias offers much in the way of spectacular scenery. About a third of Asturias is protected natural space and/or UNESO biosphere reserves. The Cantabrian Mountains and the Picos de Europa are superlative hiking areas for all levels. Long distance treks extending hundreds of kilometres abound. For example, The French route of the Camino de Santiago, replete with a network of well established refuges, runs the entire length of Asturias.

The Covadonga Valley, home to Pelayo’s great victory is considered the gateway to the Picos de Europa. The small town boasts of a religious sanctuary, a historic basilica, a mythical grotto, a museum and Pelayo’s tomb. Daily masses and rosaries all pay homage to the Asturian and Spanish hero Pelayo. The mountain scenery above the village resembles the Matterhorn area of the Swiss Alps, with the added bonus of spectacular Atlantic Ocean views 25km to the north. Enjoy and travel safe!
