Taxing times!

Prices up across board as VAT rises EXTRA VAT woe will face millions throughout Spain from this weekend.

From Saturday, prices across the board will rise with the standard rate of IVA - Spanish equivalent of VAT - increasing from 18 to 21 per cent. And certain items - including cinema and discotheque visits, health products, plus funeral and cleaning services - will soar 13 per cent as from September 1 they will be categorised into a different VAT rating as the government battles to put more money into the national coffers.

Many in business fear that the planned VAT increases will encourage the more unscrupulous to round-up prices, bringing further hardship to families struggling to survive the ongoing economic problems.

Hundreds evacuated as fire rages for 24 hours

By Nicole Hallett TWO or more fires broke out near Bedar village, prompting officials to evacuate the area.

Around 2,000 firefighters, volunteers and a military emergency response team fought the flames for more than 24 hours, from when the fire started on Saturday morning until Sunday afternoon.

Spectrum FM kept expats up-to-date with a live show, during which it was revealed by the Environment Ministry that the fires were believed to have been started intentionally.

Numerous tales were told of the night’s activities, including how the community pulled together, the bravery of fire crews, as well as lost pets being reunited with their owners following the blaze.

Foreign species to blame for Mojacar coast invasion AN exotic invasive species of coral has been found by researchers in Torre del Pirulico, Mojacar.

The High Scientific Investigation Council discovered the species called Oculina patagonica, which covers 55 per cent of the surface area studied.

Many believe the invasion is due to the local species, Cladocora caespitose, dying out because of global warming, which also seems to favour the invasive Oculina patagonica.

El Ejido urged to dump pool company LEFT-WING political party Izquierda Unida (IU) has asked El Ejido Town Hall to sever its ties with the town’s pool concessionaire, Sport Assistance Andalucia SL. The company, which is in charge of managing the municipal swimming pools in El Ejido, Mojacar and Vera, was fined €18,502 by El Ejido Town Hall in 2011 for not honouring several clauses in their

contract. According to Serafin Pedrosa, spokesperson for IU’s Almeria branch, Sport Assistance Andalucia SL has been ‘massacring’ its workers. He said the labour rights of its employees were not being respected and the company is not being clear about its financial situation.

Pedrosa recently stated that the company had made two wage reductions in the past couple of years, allegedly to

save jobs, although now the company has “created a layoff plan that will dismiss many people and further reduce the salaries of up to 25 per cent more” and that the workers were being coerced into accepting the terms “or they will not be paid their wages due from July.”

Pedrosa added that the company is also doing a poor job in maintaining the sports centre’s facilities.

SURGERY waiting lists are getting longer this year in Almeria.

Healthcare statistics have revealed that after several years of decreasing waiting periods, patients who have been been recommended for surgical procedures in Almerian hospitals are waiting from one to three days more than in 2011. The self-imposed maximum limit is 120 days, and the highest average number of days patients have to wait is at Torrecardenas Hospital, and it is well below the limit, where people needing operations have to wait 56 days. Other medical services including programmed diagnostic procedures and outpatient clinic waiting lists have also increased this year.

FAMILIES in Almeria will pay approximately €465 more per year due to the VAT increase.

The Treasury Ministry union has estimated this amount for the average family in Almeria, given that most of the services and products not considered ‘basic necessities’ will go up to 21 per cent.

TWO men were arrested for attacking two police officers while they were being detained for the alleged theft of four vehicles in Las Norias de Daza, El Ejido.

NO ESCAPE! VAT rises to hit everyone NO household - expatriate or Spanish - will escape an increase in spending following this Saturday’s IVA/VAT rises.

Whether simply buying an item of clothing, having a cigarette or selecting a CD, from September 1 it will cost more.

While many families have - when budgets have allowed - tried stocking up in advance on some items to help ease the VAT charges, with daily incidentals, including making phone calls and having a beer or wine facing increases, life is about to get a whole lot more costly across the board.

The standard rate of VAT in Spain is 18 per cent at present, but from Saturday this rises to 21 per cent on many things including alcoholic drinks, tobacco, television and radio services, clothes, phone calls, animals used in bullfighting,

agricultural machinery and overthe-counter pregnancy tests.

Also rising to 10 per cent VAT from Saturday will be items at present in the reduced 8 per cent rating, including: • Foodstuffs in general (with the exception of some basics in the 4 per cent band • Soft drinks • Animals destined for human consumption or breeding • Health and social services, plus dental work • Imported artworks and antiques • Motorway tolls • Taxi fares • Rubbish collections.

Odd items will be removed from the reduced 8 per cent rate and moved to the standard 21 per cent VAT rate from Saturday, meaning there will be a massive 13 per cent price increase in visits to the

Bedar blaze A fire plane collects water from in front of the breakwater at Garrucha as beach-goers look on.

By Nicole Hallett HUNDREDS of people were evacuated from their homes in Bedar village following a devastating fire which broke out on Saturday morning on a pine tree covered hillside.

Firefighters and a military emergency response team were still working to extinguish the blaze on Sunday with residents only allowed back to their homes that afternoon.

It seems the fire started just above El Pinar, travelled up the valley towards Serena and over the mountain towards Campico, which had to be evacuated.

Richard Shanley of Spectrum FM presented a live show to keep people in the area updated on the situation.

At around 3.30pm Shanley was alerted to another fire in Vera/Antas. His heart ‘sank’ as he reported that two or more fires like this could mean arson. The station was the first media to report this breaking news:

Ikea town to be built THE Ikea group is planning to build a neighbourhood in Hamburg, which will have hotels, offices, restaurants and ecofriendly transportation.

Instead of going to the shelter at Los Gallardos Sports Centre, they stayed

in a nearby car park watching the firefighters working all night. “I cannot praise their efforts enough.

At one point two large villas were in danger of being engulfed by the flames.

They fought hard to save them,” said Mrs Haines.

When they returned home at 3pm on Sunday their home was unaffected, although others in the village were not so lucky.

There were stories of pets lost in the fire being reunited with their owners.

A Spanish hunting dog, Tillie, belonging to Tony and Julie Justice who had been in Albox and were unable to get back home, had escaped when a friend tried to put her in a car.

“We were so worried about her, but Tillie was waiting for us in the garden the next day,” said Mrs Justice, who added: “A friend of ours has a German Shepherd who ran the six kilometres from the village to Las Gallardos, but luckily was found.”

Draft law A RABBI in Hof, Bavaria has been reported by a local doctor for allegedly circumcising baby boys; however, the Justice Ministry is expected to draft a law to allow this practice for religious reasons.

Brothel bill A GUNMAN injured three security men at brothel Artemis in Berlin, during an argument over the bill for the prostitution services he had received.

Explosion risk A MAN in Bad Kreuznach was sent to prison for hoarding 40 kilos of unstable explosives and dozens of other weapons, which had to be removed by a robot due to the possibility of it spontaneously exploding.

THE mayor of Mojacar, Rosa Maria Cano recently inaugurated the town’s new plaza Arbollon-Fronton.

The project has required five years of construction work to erect the plaza and the 38-space car park below.

According to the town hall’s architect, Rodrigo Simon, the modifications took longer due to the location of the plaza, which is in a myriad of small and winding streets, making it impossible for large trucks to get through. The project had the added problem of being very close to the church, which many thought could have been affected by the drilling.

El Pais, Spain’s leading newspaper selling more than 360,000 copies a day, spotlighted Euro Weekly News and the publishers Michel and Steven Euesden in a feature in the national

section of its best-selling Sunday edition. Here are extracts from the John Carlin interview which also appeared on the Madrid-based publication’s internationally-read website.

Top Spanish paper El Pais puts EWN in the headlines P

EOPLE earning a living from newspapers live with the absurd knowledge that the more readers they have, frequently the less they earn.

Discovering a newspaper that earns money in the Western World is, it seems, harder than finding an admired politician in Spain.

But without intending to, I found one on the industrial estate in Benalmádena on the Costa del Sol. Distributed free, written in English and published weekly, since 2007 while the remainder of Europe has plunged into economic crisis, the Euro Weekly News (EWN) has increased pagination from 64 to 120 (in Costa del Sol).

Income - entirely from advertising - has risen and while five years ago EWN published four separate editions each week, it now produces six (with a total pagination of approximately 450).

EWN owners Michel and Steven Euesden, aged 50 and 52 respectively, are proud of their working-class backgrounds with Michel’s undiluted energy and Steven’s mature and more reserved approach.

Michel - blonde, slim, high heels and with the longest nails in the world (painted blue and white) - involves herself mainly in daily management, administration and editorial.

Steven takes care of the advertising and the sales teams.

What is the secret of their undisputed success?

“Passion and energy,” says Michel. “We work seven days a week.”

They produce ‘tapas’ journalism with few long stories ‘unlike Spanish newspapers’, and articles on a wide range of topics from bank scams to foreign pensioners, jellyfish beach invasions to new restaurant openings.

There is financial advice and the latest on the Spanish royal family, plus recipes for slimming

or advice on spicing up life.

In addition to plenty of news and features, there is also wideranging advertising.

“When our competitors were paying dividends during the boom years, we were investing.

Today practically all of them have gone.”

Is there a lesson here, not just for other newspapers but for the rest of the business community?

Diego Spadoni, an Italian who has lived in Spain for 20 years

and owns the Sol y Miel Hotel near the EWN headquarters, says so. This year he has lowered prices, turnover is down and clients are not staying for as long, but even so he expects this month (August) to show 90 per cent occupation.

“The great present need is to be more professional, have more initiative and connect better with clients. You have to work longer hours and watch costs,” he said.

“People who don’t know what to do, open a bar. A Spanish classic,” says Spadoni.

Super-professional Dani Garcia agrees that opening a bar is no longer a good idea. “The sector is saturated,” says the Marbella restaurateur whose establishment - Calima - has two Michelin stars.

He has succeeded because he describes Marbella as ‘a protected bubble’, with a flow of rich, foreign clients compensating for the fall in national tourism.

Additionally, Garcia emphasises the importance of attention to detail, as ongoing plans will see him open a New York restaurant in November.

But for every winner there is a loser. Some four-star hotels in Benalmádena are offering rooms for €20, less than half of the price Spadoni charges at the two-star Sol y Miel.

Tourism is supposedly buoyant in Spain and has increased since last year.

“If the least affected sector in Spain is the way it is now, what must the rest be like?” Spadoni asks.

So what about publishing, where lay-offs are frequent nowadays and the outlook appears grim?

Strangely, the greatest problem for the audacious Euesdens is the lack of first-class staff.

“They must speak English, naturally, as well as Spanish. We are desperately looking not just for journalists and salespeople but also bloggers and people with computer expertise,” says Michel.

“Help us to find them.

With a Country & Western theme, Kris Kelly supported by ‘Carrie’s Dusty Boots’ provided the evening’s

entertainment. A raffle was held, which was for prizes donated by the bar, to which the small, but enthusiastic audience contributed €67.

In addition, the hire of books and videos had also raised another €40.

Highflyer chairman John Fairley said that it was an “enormous opportunity” to tap into the success of London 2012, which was watched by more than 50m people in the UK for at least 15 minutes over the two-week run.

Team GB’s best haul of medals since 1908 has also led to a huge spike of interest in athletics and Olympic disciplines from people in Britain.

However, Fairley believes most Olympic sports “just don’t get enough coverage” on television.

He explained many minority sports have a “very high” number of participants, such as 40,000 in the UK for judo, but no broadcaster to back them.

“The amount of athletics on the main channels has been very small, especially when you think of all the disciplines within athletics, but the Games has changed all that,” he said.

Highflyer is understood to have paid around £5m to secure the rights to various competitions to enable the channel to launch.

Channel 4 boss Jay Hunt has confirmed that the controversial Drugs: Live project will air this autumn. The long-awaited TV show will feature celebrities and ordinary people testing illegal substances, and is intended to launch a discussion on the impact of drugs on individuals.

“Half a million people a year are quite regularly taking ecstasy,” said Hunt at the Edinburgh TV Festival. “We’re having an intelligent conversation about the impact of that. “It will air this autumn and it’s been quite a journey getting there.”

The C4 controller confirmed the show would involve Keith Allen and members of the public, such as a female vicar, taking MDMA. “It will be a weird and eclectic bunch of people,” she said. Hunt also revealed much of the show would have to be pre-recorded.

Spanish Hidalgos and the dishonour of manual labour H

IDALGO is a contraction of the Spanish ‘hijo-de-algo’ or ‘son of something’. While the other titles of Spanish nobility such as king, prince, duchess etc. clearly suggest something royal and aristocratic, such is not the case with the title Hidalgo. The ‘son of something’ implies something vague and undetermined. Not an heir, nor of royal blood, not necessarily the son of a military leader, the title Hidalgo is one of ambiguity.

The Spanish Hidalgos of the 17th and 18th centuries claimed, or sometimes self-appointed themselves, to be descendants of past gentry. They had no land, no fiefdom, were often poor and penniless yet claimed a distinction as being something other than a mere commoner.

Implicit within the Hidalgo ideal was a deeply ingrained, almost congenital, aversion to manual labour. People who worked with their hands were shunned and considered ‘vile and mechanical.’

Physical labour, even skilled craftsmanship was off limits and dishonourable to Hidalgos.

Some historians have argued that the Hidalgo mentality goes a long way in explaining why Spain did not progress as did other nations of Europe. They claim aversion to manual labour has been a purely Spanish characteristic that has slowed its development.

This theme is touched upon by Cervantes and his epic Don Quixote. The protagonist, Don Quixote, is the quintessential Hidalgo; noble, yet landless, distasteful of any labour and forever inclined to examine the contemplative side of life.

Quixote’s behaviour is considered by many to be emblematic of Spain’s society of rigid social classification.

Likewise many historians have portrayed 17th century Spain as debauched by wealth and luxury with vast numbers of workers and nobility idle because they

considered labour contemptible. But is this notion of Hidalgos and their distain for labour necessarily a Spanish trait?

Have other cultures experienced this phenomenon? Is the Hidalgo mentality a marker of the Spanish national character or is it a more universal reflection of human nature?

The 5th century B.C. philosopher, Confucius, had much to say about nobility and the work ethic. The main basis of Confucius’ teachings was that man should not be idle but be active in seeking knowledge while continually striving to become a better person.

Confucius argued for the revolutionary idea of replacing ‘nobility of blood’ with ‘nobility of merit.’ A virtuous person who cultivates his life through effort can and should be considered a ‘gentleman’ while the shameless, idle son of a king is only a ‘small man’.

The works of Confucius may have been some of the first to articulate that alternatives to blood nobility and elitism can and do exist. Individuals with intelligence, credentials, physical talents and education who, when combined with effort, are mankind’s ‘natural nobility.’ The

CONFUCIUS: Nobility of merit instead of blood. concept of an idle, self-proclaimed elitist such as a Hidalgo would be anathema to Confucius. An autocratic leader, who rules through elitism, claims Confucius, ‘need not be obeyed.’

Ibn Khaldun (1332-1406) is often regarded by Western historians as one of the most respected thinkers ever to come out of the Islamic world.

(Interestingly, he spent many of his formative years in Granada).

He is considered to be the father of modern social sciences and cultural history.

His ‘magnum-opus’ or his masterpiece, The Muqaddimah (Introduction to History), is concerned with theories of social change. Khaldun believed the rise of thriving vigorous societies is cyclical in nature.

First

generational leadership is characterised by fortitude, bravery, enterprise, individuality and discipline.

Second generational leadership has a personal relationship with the generation before ‘which created glory’ but has learned these life lessons through study rather than by practical application.

Third and fourth generations inevitably lose those qualities that began the original edifice of glory.

This generation of nobility imagines that leadership was built not through individual effort but by the mere fact of their inheritance. A state characterised by a sedentary population, drained of vigour and exhausted energy is indicative of a society susceptible to decline. It leaves itself open to a more dynamic leadership who values the dignity of labour.

Confucius and Ibn Khaldun have both recognised that many societies have produced the Hidalgo mentality and the elitism towards labour and effort associated with it. My guess is they would see the Hidalgo phenomenum as something universal rather than Spanish specific.

The historical notion that the Spanish have had a long tradition of doing practically anything rather than besmirch their honour by working with their hands is misguided. Perhaps it’s the widespread popularity of Don Quixote, or the vast corpus of literature overstating Spain’s Hidalgo legacy that perpetuates this observation.

Entitlements, motivation, effort, passion, indifference etc are, it seems, more reflective of a broader human condition rather than any specific Spanish national characteristic.

But it really is beginning to appear that the lunatics have finally taken over the EU asylum.

One might file and forget the latest foolish proposals emanating from the EU merely as something thought up by tabloid journalists to fill pages during the annual July-August silly season.

But, sadly, this is not the case.

Perhaps the ideas floated by Spanish MEP Alejandro Cercas should not be taken too seriously. Maybe he was just acting the court jester during the holiday absence of those wannabe statesmen in Brussels. But, then again, it is important to ponder on the flood of directives - around 2,000 per year and some truly foolish - finding their way on to the statute books without parliamentary debate.

The following gem came as a surprise when I discovered it as an insignificant-looking paragraph hidden in a 65-page research document sent to me by a British MP. It concerned a proviso that every EU Commission directive must be perused by the European Scrutiny Committee at Westminster before being passed to the relevant ministers and departments.

This, I felt, was a practical safeguard until I discovered, tucked away, a further codicil stating that if an EU directive is not rejected by the

scrutiny committee within six weeks, it will be deemed to have been agreed, and will pass directly - and without parliamentary debate - into the statute book.

Six weeks might appear long enough for even a parliamentary committee to make up its mind, but the British parliament enjoys a long summer break from the end of July until October, and the European Scrutiny Committee, along with all the others, does not sit during this period.

However, the European Commission is away from its office only during August, which means that for 12 weeks every year, the EU can issue proposals that will not be scrutinised at Westminster.

Under these proposals all employers intending to make job cuts would have to ‘measure the happiness of their staff’, and carry out ‘psychological health’ checks before and after redundancy.

Ridiculous, perhaps, but this silly idea has already received European Parliamentary approval, clearing its way to becoming a commission directive.

We unfortunately still hear stories of people losing money to unauthorised sales people.

For example, three Britons have recently been convicted over a £10 million Ponzi scheme which had targeted British expatriates in Spain.

The scheme ran from 2001 to 2009. Trading as Gilher Inc, the fraudsters promised investors 20% returns. The money was however never invested, and was instead diverted to support their own lifestyles. They owned luxury villas in the area and had an active social life there.

It is believed that 70 British residents in Mallorca were defrauded out of £10 million.

Most of them were retired, with many of them handing over their life savings. The amounts lost ranged between €11,000 and €223,000.

The investigation was carried out by the UK’s Senior Fraud Office, after receiving complaints from investors in November 2009.

In March Texan financier Allen Stanford was convicted by a US court of orchestrating a $7 billion Ponzi scheme.

used the money to fund his other businesses and an opulent lifestyle. The largest Ponzi scheme in recent years remains Bernard Madoff’s $65 billion fraud, which came crashing down in December 2008.

Ponzi schemes basically use money from new investors to pay existing ones. The first investors will see returns, which help the scheme appear genuine and profitable to new investors. Those who invest later usually lose their money.

The capital is not actually invested and earning returns for the investors, and the schemes collapse when the unsustainable supply of new investors and money dries up.

According to the UK Financial Services Authority, too many Britons fall victim to investment scams.

Around £500m is lost each year to scams where people are

contacted to invest in shares, property or rare goods, with a promise of a high return. The majority of victims are men aged over 50, and most of them say they are experienced investors - so everyone needs to be on their guard, wherever they live.

Generally, the bigger the proposed return is, the greater the risk. Besides Ponzi schemes, “boiler room” scams involve fraudsters cold-calling people offering shares or other investments which turn out to be worthless, over-priced or nonexistent. Investors are promised high returns but usually end up losing their money.

Some victims have lost all their savings or their family home.

The Financial Services Authority warns that the tactics often sound like the “real deal, so it’s easy to be drawn in by their professional and high pressure sale tactics”.

How can you protect yourself from fraud?

When it comes to investments and pensions you should only work with firms which are fully authorised and regulated by a reputable national regulatory body like the UK Financial Services Authority.

Check this independently with the relevant authority. You can often do this online, for

example, you can access the Financial Services Authority register at www.fsa.gov.uk/register/home .do.

Only ever transfer money to an authorised institution or trust company. Never write a cheque or transfer funds to an unauthorised individual or company to invest it on your behalf.

Investing through a large established firm rather than being a one-man band will also give you peace of mind.

Compare the return being promised with comparable investments. If it is much higher then there is probably a catch. If nothing else it may be a much riskier investment than you realise.

Do not be tempted by get rich quick schemes. At the very least, limit the amount you invest and make sure you understand the investment and how returns are generated.

Most importantly, as the Financial Services Authority website warns (and the bold and use of capitals are theirs): “REMEMBER, IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT PROBABLY IS”.

To protect your wealth, you should only invest through proven investments placed through a trustworthy and established firm, such as

Analyst at Mintel, the global supplier of consumer, product and medical intelligence, with offices worldwide including in London, says: “More has to be done to unlock opportunities in the breakfast market where usage is the lowest.”

Following a recent survey by Mintel, he revealed that despite having the upper hand in quality, safety and service: “Foreign fast-food still has much work to do in flavour, affordability, health and variety in order to compete more effectively against Chinese fast-food, which has the largest share of the fast-food sector.”

Research also shows an interesting gender divide when it comes to foreign fastfood. More women (71 per cent) claim to eat at foreign fast-food restaurants than men (66 per cent).

Additionally while a quarter of all women eat at fast-food restaurants when there is a promotion including meal vouchers or coupons, only 19 per cent of men seek such special deals.

“To increase traffic among women, promotions such as vouchers and coupons can be a useful marketing tool. Women are interested in deals because they enjoy the thrill of not paying full price for an item,” said Hong.

Waste collectors mean bleary-eye starts to the day WHILE I love living in Spain, enjoying all that the weather and culture have to offer, I do have a pet hate; the rubbish collectors pitching up just as I am about to drift off to sleep or waking me up.

They are so noisy, between the vehicle and the tipping of the containers and the workers shouting, it is impossible to ignore.

I have to wake up early in the morning and as a result of this a couple of days a week I am exhausted at work, not having had the required hours of sleep.

I understand the reason, as this is the least busy time on the roads, but I wish they could do it a bit earlier.

I WAS shocked to read that despite the 24.6 per cent unemployment in Spain, the Employment Ministry still had to advertise some jobs abroad because ‘no-one’ in Spain wants them (Issue 1415).

Here in Spain these benefits only last for a short time.

Surely people not working in Spain and who have no other source of income should be willing to do almost any job.

I read all the time that the various town halls offer work training programmes.

We were notified whilst waiting on the bus to take us to the airplane that my suitcase had had an accident.

Upon arrival back in the UK we headed to make our claim. My suitcase was mangled - made to look like a bus had gone over it – and cut down one side.

Five items were missing, including an iPod, a mobile phone charger, a pair of sandals, an expensive lady shaver and a little case of gold jewellery.

Dumbing down I WAS intrigued by your article (Issue 1414) which pointed out that British expats in Spain are frequently criticised for knowing little about their chosen new homeland.

In a British survey it revealed that many nationals living in the UK are clueless about their own country and particularly in the field of geography.

This should come as no surprise to anyone acquainted with current methods of teaching and the dumbing down of modern examinations.

While the Spanish state system focuses on using the memory, acquiring knowledge and regularly testing students, the UK system has moved towards verbal reasoning exams, questions with multiple choice answers and project work.

Britain’s broken pride

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT BRITISH BOBBY: Police force was once the envy of the world. surrounded by a gang of seven black youths in a local park. After terrorising the lad and stealing his biscuits, they accused him of being a racist. When he denied the accusation, they shot him three times with an air rifle and made him kiss their feet. The next day, riding in his dad’s car, Oliver recognised one of his attackers. Mr Pettman approached the young man

and insisted he accompany him to the police station.

The youth was questioned and subsequently released.

The next day Mr Pettman was asked to go to the station. When he arrived, he was arrested, had fingerprints and DNA taken and was locked up for SEVEN hours. Apparently the youth had (falsely) accused him of assaulting him with a hacksaw blade!

Finally released without charge, Mr Pettman said he was now taking steps to sell his £800,000 home and move to Singapore, where he was opening new offices. Both his daughter and son were now too traumatised to even go out and this event had simply been the last straw.

None of the gang has been arrested and in a statement the police

declared they (the police) were simply ‘following procedures’. Can you blame this law-abiding gentleman for deciding to finally throw in the towel? Of course you can’t. The whole episode is a disgrace and perfectly described by Mr Pettman as the product of a ‘broken Britain’.

I dunno, sometimes I really do despair of it all.

Finally a funny.

A friend was telling me that some years ago they were staying at a Magaluf hotel on their first visit to Mallorca. The wife noticed a sign outside the restaurant which advised guests to ‘dress for dinner’.

That evening, suitably attired in long evening gown, abundant jewellery and boa, she swept into the dining area only to discover the other guests in shorts, T-shirts and flip-flops. The hotel had merely been requesting the residents to wear clothes. Lovely!

I WISH people would stop having a go at me for knocking the UK. I NEVER have a go at the auld country itself but at what some irresponsible and downright traitorous individuals are turning it into! The beautiful country of my birth prided itself on freedom of speech, patriotism, its low crime rate, wonderful NHS care and a police force that was the envy of the world.

But, since the Labour government decided to buy itself votes by inviting in all and sundry, Britain has been reduced to a land of crime, deteriorating health services, no-go areas, feral gangs of hooded yobs, foreign spongers and a warped sense of justice.

UMAN rights groups have expressed outrage at recent ‘inhumane’ forced evacuations of Roma gypsies across France. Police raids left hundreds of Roma, including many children, homeless after caravans were impounded. Images of the dismantled camps and comparisons to former President Sarkozy's Roma-crackdown two years ago have been a PR disaster for President Hollande.

Now, to be fair, for a long time the French seemed not unhappy about a huge camp of immigrants near Calais, Sangatte, as long as those immigrants were expected to move on - illegally - into Britain.

But since I was the victim of a mugging

Some insomniacs born without comfort genes for easy sleep A NEWLY identified group of people have been found to be born without the ‘comfort’ genes needed for easy sleep.

This means that they are immune to the feeling of warmth and relaxation which sends an average person off to sleep within 15 minutes.

Instead, their genes are designed to maintain a state of mental alertness, making normal extended sleep impossible.

This means they sleep fitfully, only in short bursts.

Even then, their lack of ‘comfort’ genes can mean they find it hard to get comfortable, fuss about the bedding or finding their sleeping position.

Up until recently, insomnia was thought to be purely a psychological complaint triggered by stress, grief or sleep disruption caused by shift work or jet lag.

caused by the age of the father, while the mother’s age had no effect at all, scientists in Iceland discovered.

The child of a 40-yearold father had two-and-ahalf times as many potentially damaging mutations as that of a 20year-old; 65 mutations transmitted compared to 25.

Mothers transmitted around 15, regardless of age.

This gap was found to increase with every passing year.

The father’s age was “an extraordinarily important force in evolution,” said the study’s lead author Dr Kari Stefansson of decode, a leading genetics firm in Reykjavik.

EGULARLY brushing one’s teeth could help to keep the memory sharp in years to come.

Nearly 5,500 elderly people were monitored over an 18-year period and it was revealed that those who brushed their teeth less than once a day were up to 65 per cent more likely to develop dementia than those who brushed three times a day.

pronounced in women than in men.

“Not only does the state of your mind predict what kind of oral health habits you practice, it may be your oral health habits influence whether or not you get dementia,” said the study’s lead author Annlia Paganini-Hill.

This is thought to be because gum disease bacteria causes inflammation and brain damage when it reaches the brain.

AN X at the end of an email or text has been found to have started more than half of office affairs.

Both men and women often wrongly assume that a message ending in an X is a come-on, when in fact a work colleague is merely being friendly.

Forty per cent of women and 10 per cent of men put Xs in emails to their boss, while 86 per cent say they mark mails to ordinary colleagues with a kiss, a

dating website WhatsYourPrice.com found in a poll of 1,000 British members on the significance of Xs in emails.

A quarter of men and 35 per cent of women said they had sent messages bearing kisses which had been wrongly seen as sexual by the recipient.

Sixty per cent of men and 55 per cent of women who had had an affair with a work colleague admitted it had been initially sparked

Hibiscus delights for your Spanish garden Why hibiscus?

THERE are four reasons why we have hibiscus in our garden.

Firstly, there is an hibiscus for all situations in Spain.

Secondly, they are also fairly easy to raise from cuttings and in some cases from seeds. Thirdly, their flowers are exotic and, finally and somewhat interestingly, they can be eaten in salads.

The most hardy varieties – OK to well below zero.

The deciduous Hibiscus Syriacus varieties of which we have three white, redthroated shrubs in our garden are covered with flowers from June to September. Blue, purple and white species grace several public areas of our village.

The tree or spreading bush Hibiscus Mutibilis often called cotton rose as its flowers look like fluffy balls of white cotton that start white and change to pink as they mature. The trees are impressive when in full flower with a mix of white, white and pink and fully pink flowers. Our two trees flower in September through to October.

now Florida and Georgia in the USA. We have plants on the shallow margins of our two ponds. The single and double red-flowered varieties of Hibiscus Rosa Sinsensis are thought to have come from the Indian Ocean area. These are the exotic plants often used as garden and street-lining hedges.

More tender varieties The white, yellow, orange and pink-flowered versions of Hibiscus Rosa Sinsensis. If your garden is in a frost belt it is often best to use these as annuals or plant in containers that can be moved to a greenhouse during the winter months.

The flowers can be dried

for the preparation of interesting infusions and when we visited the Botanical Gardens outside Havana in Cuba we lunched on an hibiscus flower salad with no other ingredients except for a light salad oil.

It was different and delicious so the flowers now often grace our summer salads for decoration and eating by ourselves and adventurous guests.

Another group of plants that offer many planting possibilities are the sages or salvias. Worldwide there are more than 800 varieties, but many are not suitable for planting in Mediterranean gardens.

AUTUMN COLOUR: Velvet and pineapple sage will flower until there is a frost.

However, two that would be worth planting up for autumn colour are the velvet sage or leucanthus and the pineapple sage elegans rutilans. They are shown in the photograph.

MACS have come a long way in just four years MACS have come a long way in just four years from the early days of a coffee morning for cancer patients, survivors and carers.

Now they are opening charity shops and employing people to help manage projects.

Macs now have an excellent supply of equipment to help with home care all thanks to the generosity of the community groups donating funds from hard working events and fundraising. Macs also have their own fundraising team who

work tirelessly to raise funds for future projects/development of Macs.

When the financial burden of cancer proves too much, patients can also call on the trained independent financial assessor who assists with those delicate financial needs when the impact of cancer becomes a financial burden way beyond the normal realms of coping.

The future of Macs is still reliant in the greatest part by the support of volunteers.

The shop in Turre has over 30 volunteers and we have the support of other volunteers waiting in the wings for the next shop to open.

Volunteers make a massive difference to life in Spain, from providing advice and friendship to cancer victims and their families, helping support fundraising events or meeting new people whilst volunteering a few hours working in a charity shop.

Six cups of coffee a day can help keep bowel cancer away.

Coffee cuts risk of cancer PREVIOUSLY it has been advised to cut back on the amount of coffee we drink. A new study contradicts this advice.

It was found those who drank up to six or more cups a day were up to 40 per cent less likely to fall victim to bowel cancer. Those who drank four cups saw their risk of a tumour drop by about 15 per cent.

Tea lovers on the other hand did not see any reduction in risk.

Some previous studies have hinted coffee could have a protective effect, but the findings were inconclusive.

In this latest study by researchers at the US National Cancer Institute in Rockville, Maryland (USA), nearly 490,000 men and women took part in a diet and health study from the midnineties onwards.

Their eating and drinking habits were

analysed and their bowel cancer rates were compared among coffee drinkers and non-drinkers.

The results were published in the latest American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Previous studies have suggested that the risk of a brain tumor can be cut by around 40 per cent by drinking five cups of coffee or tea a day.

Just one cup a day could nearly halve the risk of cancers affecting the mouth and gullet, Japanese scientists found.

However, pregnant women should follow medical advice to limit their caffeine intake as it can increase the risk of miscarriage in high doses.

Caffeine has also been shown to increase anxiety in some people and alter sleep patterns, so anyone suffering from these symptoms are recommended to cut down their intake.

Craft market at Vera Hotel

By Roy Stevens A CRAFT MARKET has been introduced as an additional feature to the Vera Half Marathon.

The market will be at the Vera Hotel on October 6 starting at 2pm.

“We have introduced the Craft Market because we believe it will create a lot of interest for the people attending the Vera Half Marathon,” said a spokesman for the Vera and District Lions Club.

“We will have a large number of runners, their supporters and the public coming to the Vera Hotel”.

The race will start and finish at the car park to the rear of the Vera Hotel. Many of the supporters and the public are very likely to stay at the event all afternoon and evening where they will be entertained by the Bay Radio Road Show.

“The Craft Market will give them the opportunity to browse while the runners are taking part in the race.

The Vera Half Marathon is drawing interest from

competitors and supporters from all over Spain and the UK” The market will be located close to the entrance and next to the centre of all the activities, giving public easy access to the stalls, and the stall holders the best opportunity to sell their products.

Runners are required to check in at 2pm so they will be arriving with their supporters between 2pm and 4pm when the race starts.

“The Craft Market will be the obvious area for people to browse when waiting for the competitors to return to the finish line,” said the spokesman.

“In order to make the Craft Market interesting we would welcome a good cross section of craft stalls, making this a successful feature of the day.”

Space will be allocated on a first to reserve basis and not, who arrives earliest on the day.

The cost for a stall will be €5 payable on the day.

Space could well be limited as we are expecting a very good

response and recommend that you book your stall early.

“This is a craft market and not a rastro or general market,” said the spokesman.

Chocolate is lethal for cats and dogs

CHOCOLATE made for human consumption can cause death in cats and dogs as they are sensitive to a class of chemicals called methylxanthines.

Caffeine and theobromine are members of this family.

Our pets simply cannot metabolise and excrete methylxanthines as efficiently as humans.

The half life of those compounds in the human body is in the order of two to three hours; in the dog it is more like 18 hours.

In a dog the compounds are taken up by the liver and transmitted via the bile into the intestine. They are then converted back into the original methylxanthines for another circuit through the

There are many formulations of chocolate with varying amounts of caffeine and theobromine. The lethal dose of sweet milk chocolate for a dog is two ounces per kilogram of bodyweight. For a five kilogram dog this would be about 280 grams. A lethal dose of milk chocolate for a 25-

kilogram dog would be about 1.4 kilograms.

Dark chocolate is at least 10 times as lethal.

A 25- kilogram dog could die from the methylxanthines in just five ounces.

Symptoms include vomiting, hyperactivity, restlessness, hypersensitivity to touch (a dog will jump when touched), very rapid heartbeat and an increased breathing rate, a loss of control of leg muscles, muscle tremor seizures, general weakness, coma and finally death.

In my opinion it would be a tragic mistake to encourage a dog to develop a taste for chocolate. A small dog left alone in a house with a box of chocolates might well follow its nose to the goodies and kill itself by poisoning, so be careful to keep any chocolate well out of reach.

Helpers needed for the Vera Half Marathon THE Vera and District Lions Club are holding the first of which is hoped will be a successful annual event in the local calendar, bringing visitors to the area from all over Europe.

The Vera Half Marathon will take place on Saturday October 6 starting from and finishing at the Vera Hotel, Vera.

The proceeds from this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event will go to the childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s refuge in Vera and the Vera and District Lions Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s charity account which is devoted to those people in need in our local communities.

They need a few reliable people with yellow fluorescent jackets to help with marshalling on the route. Marshals will need to attend a pre-race meeting a week before the race on Saturday September 29 at 4pm at the Vera Hotel, Vera. Volunteers will also need to be available from 3pm till approximately 8pm on Saturday October 6.

New homes project out to tender THE construction of 20 homes has been put out to tender by the municipal company Almeria XXI. These homes will be built on municipal land located between streets Maromeros and Impresores in the Pescaderia neighbourhood.

Companies wishing to present a quote can do so up until Wednesday September 26 in the Almeria XXI municipal offices located at No. 7 in Plaza Careaga.

The base quote is €1,579,478.76 including 8 per cent VAT. It is estimated it should take 15 months to build the 20 homes.

Families which lived in the old building located on the land will be able to live in the new building, according to Almeria XXI Vice-president Pablo Venzal. The relocation of these families has reportedly cost more than €600,000 since 2006.
