LAST CALL: Having a drink at Sa Guerreria is set to be limited.
Last orders! Time is called on noisy bars PALMA is stepping up its fight against noisy pubs, bars and restaurants. Those in the Sa Guerreria neighbourhood could be forced to close at midnight in winter, and 12.30am in summer, as opposed to 2.30am and 3am at present. The earlier closing - if carried out will see a local law being applied with a ruling that the zone is ‘acoustically
polluted’. If this law is enforced, no more opening licences will be granted by the city hall to bars in the Sa Guerreria area. Under local law, the level of decibels allowed should not be surpassed on more than 11 days a year. This has been reported in an area comprising Galera, Corderia, Quartera and Pes de la Farina streets.
City hall representative for Palma City Centre, Joan Pau Reus, said that bar and pub owners in the area had been repeatedly notified about noise levels. He said that to ensure the problem does not get worse through allowing more bar terraces, a proposal had been turned down to minimise traffic in the area. Reports on the situation will be available for one month for public consultation, and following that, it will take two months to resolve any public concerns and comments. If everything goes to plan, the new closing hours should be effective by February. Although Reus claimed residents are sympathetic with this decision, President of the Catering Federation Pilar Carbonell said the measure is ‘embarrassing’ and accused public administrators of “having fought for the ‘acoustically polluted’ declaration.”
