Storm-hit parents in childcare call SOME parents want emergency childcare put in place when schools are forced to close. The call follows the closure of schools as storms raged locally, with 14,000 pupils affected.
Torrential rain saw 250 litres per square metre fall inland in Vall de Alcala and 200 in Vall de Laguar following earlier storms in La Marina Alta. Town halls were issued with a Yellow Alert storm warning and schools closed when it was raised to Red. Thirty-five state primary and secondary schools – including those of Denia, Javea, Benitachell and Teulada – failed to open their doors. A further 25 private schools and academies also shut. Welcomed by pupils, the unexpected time off was less popular with the youngest children’s parents. Some working mothers had to arrange emergency childcare, and others demanded that such emergency closures should lead to childcare being put in place as parents were taken unawares by the measure. With the schools closed, IT was party-time in Alfaz del Pi as the town chaos hit the roads with celebrated its local festival with a children’s some cut off, and the parade. The Festival Queen and First Maid emergency services called Rosabell Llobregat and Paula Romero along to remove fallen trees. with their maidens graced one of the floats. Turn to Page 4
