Strike poll PRIOR to yesterday’s (Wednesday) general strike, 49 per cent of those surveyed locally indicated they would support it.

PHARMACY STRIKE: Queues form outside an open chemist’s in La Marina.

Insulin alert as chemists close DIABETES sufferers are increasingly concerned about getting their insulin with the pharmacy strike now in its second week. With many finding it harder to find supplies, they were urged to head to local health centres and hospitals.

President of the Provincial Association of Diabetics Mercedes Sanchez said: “We are advising patients to go to hospitals or health centres, where there will not be a problem, in case they cannot find the medication in pharmacies.”

Passengers run away as bus prices rise PUBLIC bus services lost 29.6 per cent of passengers in the Murcia Region in September. This is the highest drop registered in Spain. The figures published by the National Statistics Institute coincide with the bus fare increase, applied in mid-August by company Latbus. In addition, Latbus decided to get rid of all the discounted tickets, including the monthly pass and those specially aimed at school and university students.

The health department has been receiving calls warning of the shortage. Arantxa Cervera, the president of the provincial association, said the situation was ‘worrying’ as patients were being forced to visit several pharmacies to find the insulin or test strips they need This situation is particularly difficult for people in small towns and the elderly who are unable to travel. Pharmacies started their strike last week, in protest at the lack of payment by the regional government. Minister for Health Luis Rosado said: “The desire of the department is to end the conflict as soon as possible.”
