By EWN reporter Gemma Quinn NO SMOKING laws in public places are increasingly being ignored in the Murcia region. There were 711 complaints of people allegedly smoking in public places in the Murcia region last year, a 24.3 per cent increase compared with the 572 complaints in 2011, according to Ministry of Health figures. Just over 600 complaints were made by the Guardia Civil and Local Police, while 108 were from consumer associations and individuals. Health inspectors carried out almost 10,000 inspections on premises to ensure the laws were being followed. Almost half of these checks were on hospitality sector establishments. “We need to raise awareness of the effects of smoking on health,” said Director General of Public Health Francisco García Ruiz, adding there was “a need to inform citizens to achieve the highest degree of
