In total, airlines have scheduled more than 110,300 seats on 1,100 flights until March 28, 2015. The other rural wonders in Spain were Ca単on del Rio Lobos in Burgos, Playa de las Catedrales in Lugo, Nacedero del Rio Urederra in Navarra, Aiguestortes National Park in Lleida, and the Benasque Valley in Huesca.

Editor Put down the razor ‘Movember’ is here A note from the
I
T’S November already and in just a few short weeks our thoughts will begin turning to the Christmas season; a season that seems to enjoy a longer build-up as each year goes by. But before we start humming Christmas tunes and getting the decorations down from the attic, we have November to contend with, a time when the days and nights get that little bit colder, darkness descends that bit earlier, and facial hair on the upper lips of men seems to sprout from nowhere. So why the proliferation of moustaches of all shapes and sizes on men that otherwise spend the rest of the year clean-shaven? Why it’s ‘Movember’ of course. Growing in popularity each year, Movember is the month when men of all ages and from different walks of life
grow a moustache in order to raise money and awareness for men’s health, in particular prostate and testicular cancer. From humble beginnings back in 2004 when a group of 30 friends in Australia decided to grow moustaches during November, the Movember Foundation now boasts around four million ‘mo bros’ worldwide and has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for men’s health. The trend has caught on in Spain, with the country being one of 21 countries across the world that participates in Movember. So don’t be too surprised if you notice a lot of dodgy-looking moustaches doing the rounds during Movember. It’s all for a good cause and we here at EWN will always support a good cause. Good luck boys!

Phone theft was fabricated AN investigation began after a man, JFC, claimed his mobile phone had been snatched in Garrucha. The alleged victim claimed that he was walking along the promenade in Garrucha, chatting to his wife on his mobile phone, when a person pretending to be a jogger snatched the phone from his hand. Initial inquiries revealed no witnesses to the event or anything similar. Officers interviewed the alleged victim and also requested the telephone number of his wife, to confirm that he had been speaking to her at the time he claimed. It emerged that the incident was fabricated and the man had made up the
events in order to claim a new mobile from the phone company. JFC was arrested and has been charged with falsifying a crime report, and with
fraud as the phone company had given him a replacement model. The man and the full details of the case have been presented to the court.
Robbery claim leads to arrest DURING October, officers from the Guardia Civil responded to a report of an armed robbery in Vera. In a report to the Guardia Civil, the alleged victim, PMDD, claimed that his local had been held up at gunpoint by two youths brandishing a handgun. He said they had escaped with €4,400. However, during the investigation, officers suspected all was not as it seemed and began a second line of inquiry. It then emerged that PMDD had also improperly gained various amounts of money from customers on the premises. After collating all the information, the officers arrested PMDD on suspicion of falsifying a crime. The accused and the full details of the case have been presented to the court.

Money laundering charges dropped ALMERIA Provincial Court has acquitted a man on trial for money laundering. The man was facing more than three years in prison on charges of laundering more than €100,000 through a

On the trail of the best tapas in Huercal Overa HUERCAL OVERA is hosting its fourth edition of the Ruta de Tapas (Tapas Trail) until November 16. In addition to visiting any of the 33 participating eateries, diners can win a weekend trip or an annual pass to the H20 sports centre. There is also a ‘parallel selfie’ competition where the winners can get a meal at any of the participating restaurants to the value of €160. This year, 11 more eateries are taking part, a massive increase on 2013’s number and there are 64 different tapas dishes available for visitors to try. The town has also commissioned an app by Andriosfera so that diners can vote for their favourites online. It can be downloaded from Google Play and Play Store. The app allows you to find details of all participating venues and you can vote for the best tapas dish and the best service.
The court concluded that with regard to the revenue under investigation, specifically two large deposits, it could not be proven to have been deposited under the circumstances the prosecution claimed. The man declared that one deposit of €27,695 was for a catering contract awarded at the time. In addition, the company expanded during the time period under investigation with company shares worth €95,000 being sold to a third party. The court described this as information that significantly altered the accounting analysis and led to a blurring of the suspicion of criminal origins of funds. The court pointed out that the man had not provided correct accounts for the commercial register, which breached the essential duty of every business owner. However, this indicated his managerial ineptitude and was too grey an area to attribute to the crime of money laundering.

Macael awards BABIEKA FILMS production company from Madrid has been nominated by Macael for its work in promoting the area by way of the movie Exodus. After losing so many jobs when the property market crashed, the regional union of marble companies today are reinventing in order to survive.
An example of this is the changes in nomination types for the Macael XXVIII awards, presented this year by the president of the Association of Andaluz Marble (EEA), Antonio Martinez. The film Exodus is nominated for the award for its “contribution to promoting tourism in the region, something very
important to create jobs,” according to Martinez. Employment remains the main focus in the sector. Martinez explained that the sharp decline in domestic demand has forced companies to look beyond the peninsula, but with good results. “Today, every market is willing to work with us,” he said.

Generation gap: parents, children and the internet TWO out of three young people have profiles on social networks and almost a third of their contacts are people they don’t know, according to a recent survey for parents of 10 to 17 year olds and their children. The survey by the Interior Ministry on internet use and security also revealed that almost 60 per cent connect to the internet every day, most for at least two hours. One in three parents said they check their children’s profiles and contacts. A figure that is in contrast with what they claim worries them most: their children being contacted by strangers.

A big day for Puff The Magic Dragon MORE than 40 hashers turned out for the run at Almanzora, part of a surprise for one of the group’s most prolific hashers. Almanzora is normally a tranquil place on a Sunday morning. However, when the IndaloH3 hashers arrived, that all changed. One of the hashing group members was celebrating his 150th hash, unaware of the surprise that lay in store. After a coffee and catch-up the hashers formed their circle and the hares explained the routes and marks. Then the celebratory member was called up and provided with a big balloon to carry. The runners had to wait for five minutes as they were following a live hare, so the walkers
left them kicking their heels and headed out along well maintained tracks down through fruit groves and into the ramblas with splendid views interspersed with folds of bamboo. Slowly they worked their way back to the village. Upon reaching the finishing line the runners were already back and waiting for the usual refreshments. The closing circle was formed, punishments dished out, visitors welcomed and a new member christened. Many of the hashers had provided homemade treats to celebrate Puff’s achievement, and so they all tucked in. 150 HASHES: Puff The Magic Dragon celebrated his achievement with friends.

Fast food? ‘No thanks’ say the Spaniards and Italians IT would seem that the famous Mediterranean diet of olive oil, vegetables, fruit and fish has not disappeared in Spain, as new data reveals that Spaniards are among the most frugal when it comes to forking out on fast food. Big Macs, Whoppers and chicken dippers are not big on most Spaniards dietary
requirements, it would seem, and only fellow Mediterraneans the Italians – renowned lovers of delicious, healthy food – spend less on fast food than the Spanish. A study conducted by EAE Business School reveals that during 2013, Spaniards spent a total of €1.8 billion on fast food, which is a slight increase on the
year before. But data from El Economista shows that Spain is second only to Italy in terms of countries that spend the least on fast food. The health-conscious Italians spent just €1.6 billion in 2013 on fast food. Not surprisingly, the USA tops the list of big (fast food) spenders, forking out a beltpopping €63.8 billion alone in
2013 on cheeseburgers, fries, pizzas and other firm arteryclogging favourites. Differences in terms of population numbers and economic circumstances are key factors in the discrepancies between the amounts spent, but the latest data would suggest that Spain won’t have to fear a major obesity problem among its young, at least for the present.
Growing dangers of online gambling THE striking success of online gambling services is concerning experts and rehabilitated ex-gamblers alike. Patients arrive in rehabilitation clinics at younger ages every year, which shows the addictive power of these services, as reported by representatives at Barcelona Hospital Bellvitge Psychiatric Department. The widely extended use of mobile devices has spread the problem to teenagers and young adults, attracted by the constant
advertising in social media websites, as informed by a representative of Spanish Federation of Rehabilitated Gamblers (FEJAR). The appearance of celebrities like Rafa Nadal in said adverts helps the viewer create a sense of familiarity and trust towards the service. Online gamblers often use fake identities, usually to hide the fact that they are minors. Doctor Angela Ibañez, Head of the
Psychiatric unit of Ramon y Cajal hospital unit, said: “The legalisation of online gambling and its advertising makes it look risk free and attractive. Online players do not usually acknowledge that they have a problem, which makes it harder to treat them because they do not seek professional help.” Other experts from the Advisory Committee for Responsible Gambling of the Ministry of Finance pointed out that an improved political legislation could help minimise the risk for young players to develop addictions, and said that their motivations and behaviours online were focused on entertainment rather than the gambling activity. Meanwhile, players from 12 to 15 years old are spending big quantities of money on these sites and their addiction often goes unnoticed.

Suits for newborns designed in Valencia A NEW project has created a bodysuit for babies which will automatically detect problems in newborns including sepsis and heart problems. The new suit – made of hypoallergenic cotton with minute, almost transparent, sensors incorporated – has been designed by Peditec, a new paediatric technology investigation team with members from Valencia General Hospital and Polytechnic University (UPV) and trials have been carried out on 100 volunteer babies between one day and two weeks old. UPV Electronics professor Javier Saiz explained that the wireless sensors send data to computer software which analyses algorithms to detect heartbeat variations and signs of sepsis. Empar Lurbe, Head of Paediatrics at the hospital, said the idea is to keep ahead of these problems which although infrequent can have serious shortterm consequences.

Leonor: the future Queen of Spain at nine years old HER Royal Highness the Princess of Asturias turned nine on Friday October 31. Leonor has a vague idea of what it means to be heir to the throne; just like her grandfather transferred his responsibilities as King to his son King Felipe VI, she will one day inherit from her father something called the Spanish crown. She has heard her father say the crown must be won with effort, hard work and dedication, and the King leads by example and does his best to instil those very same values in her. Leonor will be the fourth Spanish Queen since Isabella I of Castille – otherwise known as Isabella the Catholic – who sat on DISCIPLINED: Princess Leonor is very formal in public.
the Spanish throne for 30 years, from 1474 until 1504. For the time being, though, she is 36th Princess of Asturias and the education she is receiving is consistent with her current and future role in the Casa Real. For instance, she speaks perfect English at such an early age, according to abc.es. “She knows who she is, but she attaches no importance to it,” said those who know her best. This can be attributed to the fact that her parents – King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia – have always wanted her to lead a life that resembles as much as possible that of any other child. The Princess – who also holds the titles Princess of Girona and Princess of Viana, Duchess of Montblanc, Countess of Cervera and Lady of Balaguer – stands out at public ceremonies because she is very disciplined and formal. However, when there are no cameras around, she behaves like a lively and fun child, who likes to play with her sister – Her Royal Highness the Infanta Sofia – and be mischievous. Fully aware of the
risk they run of being spoiled by other people, Queen Letizia does her utmost to raise her daughters with discipline. One day, while the Royal Family was holidaying in Mallorca, Leonor and Sofia could not take their eyes off some beautiful purses, and when the shopkeeper offered them as a gift, the Queen thanked him, but kindly refused the offer. The girls did not complain. Just like any other mother out there, Her Majesty the Queen supervises her daughters’ diet and limits the amount of sweets they eat at parties and special events, and she will not let them have a dog, contrary to their and the King’s wishes. Sometimes the Queen appears as a controlling mother, but the truth is she tries to respect her daughters’ spontaneity. At a parade staged on October 12, Princess Leonor – who loves music – started to follow the rhythm with her head when the band began to play. The Queen looked at her, smiled and said nothing.
Game of Thrones sparks demand to shoot in Spain IN just two weeks, tourism in the Sevilla region has gone up by 15 per cent, thanks to the television hit Game of Thrones. And the US Embassy in Spain has been inundated with calls from American producers now wanting to shoot in Spain, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The decision to film parts of Season Five of the hugely popular HBO fantasy series in Sevilla and in the town of Osuna has already had a direct impact on the area. US Ambassador to Spain, James Costos, himself a former HBO executive, said initial figures show that tourism to the area has gone up by around 15 per cent since filming began two weeks ago.

“Spanish culture is an important element for the Spain brand, which the
Spanish Government and the embassy actively promote to promote investment in this
country,” he said. “That investment has a direct impact on the creation of jobs and
increasing the awareness of Spain as a competitive and welcoming place for production.” He said that the embassy had been taking calls from USbased producers wanting to film in Spain thanks to the success of Game of Thrones. “Film will be an indirect motor for increasing tourism in Spain,” said the ambassador. “The creative industries create employment, and protecting intellectual property is crucial for this activity. Strengthening intellectual property rights is not an end in itself. It is a means to guaranteeing a healthy industry that creates employment and takes advantage of the creativity in the Spanish population.”

MADRID: More than 2,000 sheep paraded through the streets.
Not the usual type of Madrid visitors THE famous streets of Madrid resembled more a countryside pasture than a bustling metropolis at the weekend, when more than 2,000 sheep were paraded through the city. Spanish shepherds took to the streets of the capital in defence of ancient grazing, droving and migration rights, and brought a massive flock of sheep too. Accompanied by dancers and musicians dressed in traditional costume, the unusual
procession made its way past some of Madrid’s most well-known landmarks before the chief herdsman stopped at city hall to hand over 10 ‘maravedies’ - copper coins - as payment for the crossing. The bleating, bell-clanging herd had tourists and locals staring in wonder at how one of the world’s most famous cities had suddenly become a rural-like haven for 2,000 woolly visitors.

VALON, the leading provider of pre-paid funeral plans, saw its business grow substantially in the year to September 2014, with the help of a sustained campaign in the Euro Weekly News. Driving the growth is a huge increase in the number of enquiries the company is receiving from people concerned about increasing funeral costs. Website and head office enquiries were up by 300 per cent, as were sales leads generated by stands at exhibitions and other events. These have led to an expanded geographical spread of customers and a 99.2 per cent increase in the number of
funeral plans written since July 2013. Between July 2013 and July 2014, Avalon gained its first customers in Portugal, Malta and the Spanish regions of Seville, Jaen and Cordoba. The company has opened an office in the Costa del Sol and has plans to open a branch in Almeria. Avalon is now offering even more employment opportunities to UK expatriates living in Spain and across Europe. Numbers in Europe now match the UK, having grown by 42 per cent, from 41 in July 2013 to 58 in September 2014. Jason Gardner, Head of Europe at Avalon, said: “People realise that funerals costs will keep rising.” He added: “Unsurprisingly,
they are taking steps to protect their loved ones from the substantial implications of these rises by contemplating prepaid funeral plans with serious intent. “As a consequence, we have nearly doubled our number of written plans in the year to September 2013.” Avalon protects customers from rising funeral costs and the worry of arranging a funeral when the time comes, which can be complex outside the UK. Avalon’s three comprehensive packages, Balmoral, Windsor Way and Britannia, are available in Spain, Portugal and Tenerife. Alternative plans are available for customers residing in Cyprus, Malta and Turkey.

STAT OF WEEK MADRID’S 1,346 agrifood companies represent 7 per cent of the region’s GDP and provides 17,000 people with jobs. With a turnover of €3.8 billion, it exported products worth €1.150 billion in 2013.
SPANISH banks encountered no problems meeting the latest European Central Bank’s stress tests. The banks of 22 European countries were put to the test and Spain was ranked in 10th position. This was a far cry from 2012 when Bankia, one of the country’s biggest banks,

No super-money for super-chefs THE 82 Michelin stars awarded to 25 Spanish restaurants have not conferred immediate riches. Eneko Atxa, whose restaurant Azurmendi near Bilbao boasts the maximum three stars, has a profit-tosales ratio of around 4 per cent a year. So does his fellow superchef Nacho Manzano who runs the two-star Casa Marcial in Arriondas (Asturias). For Martin Berasategui and Juan Mari Arzak, both based in San Sebastian, the ratio rises to 9 and 15 per cent respectively, but this is as good as it gets. David Muñoz, another respected chef, has revolutionised Spanish
gastronomy at his Madrid restaurant DiverXo, but lost €80,000 in 2012 according to his last registered accounts. “The great restaurants are not very profitable, not at those prices,” said Josep Francesc Galls, professor of Marketing Management at the Esade Business School. If the chefs make money it is through agreements with major food groups, products bearing their names and sponsorships, not through meals costing up to €200 a head. Ferran Adria, whose restaurant El Bulli was named the world’s best and could afford to say so, put it another way: “A groundbreaking restaurant does not focus on profits.”

Deepwater find for Repsol REPSOL has struck high grade oil in the Gulf of Mexico off Louisiana. The find is located in the Leon well, 352 kilometres from the US coast. It was drilled in water 1,865 metres deep, reaching a depth of 9,684 metres which places it amongst the company’s deepest wells. The Gulf of Mexico is one of the
world’s most profitable deepwater drilling areas and the latest discovery comes five years after another important Repsol find, the Buckskin well 50 kilometres from Leon. Repsol has a 60 per cent participation in the Leon well licence, with the remaining 40 per cent controlled by the Colombian company Ecopetrol.

No sweat, no stress for Spain’s banks needed a €22 billion cash injection and the government requested a €100 billion bailout from the European Union. None of the 15 banks examined will need to raise new capital and although Liberbank had a €32 million shortfall at the end of 2013, it has raised €616 million since
then and has met the ECB’s requirements. The reform and restructuring of Spain’s banking system has borne fruit, said a satisfied Luis Maria Linde, governor of the Bank of Spain. “Spanish banks face the future with healthy balance sheets from a position of solvency,” Linde added.

Cash flow essential to running a business SUCCESSFUL management of cash flow is essential to running a business. Try to work on accurately calculating projected income and balancing outgoings with income. A community far beyond your business doors will be harmed if you get it wrong. Best not to have all your business eggs in one basket. A British government minister once pointed out that most business bankruptcies are caused, not by failure of the business owner, but by the failure of a prime customer. When a major company goes down the pan it takes scores, sometimes hundreds of small suppliers with it. A major company’s collapse can

plunge hundreds of smaller businesses, many of them one-manbands, into bankruptcy. I do remember one British household name builder that actually had less than 20 members of the staff on the payroll. Their huge labour force was entirely
sub-contracted. When the banks pulled the plug, hundreds of them were left high, dry and penniless. You should be in a position to survive if a customer or two ceases to do business with you. The cause may not be a client’s insolvency. Your customer could relocate, find an alternative supplier, downsize, or decide that your service can be more cost effectively done in-house. Businesses also get into financial difficulties when expectations of income are exaggerated and outgoings airily dismissed. I recall an employee who thought all was well because the till was stuffed with banknotes. What he should have been looking at were
the cheque book stubs. There is a saying in business: “Turnover is vanity, profit is sanity, but cash is king.” Getting it right is a fine balancing act. Constantly monitor expenditure. If you can get by without it then ditch it. If you sensibly predict income, realistically assess outgoings, learn the dark arts of minimising outgoings whilst maximising income, whilst keeping customers happy, your business will prosper. A crumb of comfort for those facing difficulties. It has been calculated that self-made millionaires on average suffered seven bankruptcies before they hit success.

Markets refocus on economic data
S
TERLING / Euro movements were heavily affected by the run up and then the aftermath of the Scottish referendum vote. As we approached polling day the pound tumbled sharply as polls identified that the outcome was neck and neck. The unprecedented uncertainty that a Yes vote would have delivered sent shock waves through the financial markets and the pound suffered heavy losses as the possibility of a Yes vote became very real. On the day of the vote itself the markets were more confident of a No vote and this led to a recovery in the pound. On official confirmation of the No vote the pound rallied further still hitting a two year high against the euro. Attention is now shifting back towards economic data from both the UK and the Eurozone which will determine the future

As it stands, the UK is on a trajectory towards raising interest rates whilst the European Central Bank is entrenched in monetary easing. Recently they undertook aggressive action in the bond market purchasing €1.7bn in a move to kick start the ailing European economy. This latest move exceeded expectations despite Mario
Draghi’s public ambition to expand the balance sheet up to €1 trillion. Attention has now shifted back to economic data to feedback a picture on the health of the UK and the Eurozone economies. The UK is as we stand looking likely to raise interest rates next year and this is certainly boosting appetite for the pound. Continued positive feedback
is required from UK data to support this view and there is a risk that data could start to slow, potentially pushing back the timeline for an interest rate hike. Ironically the strength of the pound in recent months could weigh on future UK data releases and also soften inflation numbers which will slow the urgency of the BoE. However at present the data has been mainly

positive and hence why the pound is hitting two year highs against the euro. The euro is under pressure across the currency markets and in particular against the USD. The European Central Bank have cut their main interest rate to 0.05 per cent and cut the deposit rate into negative territory. However there is concern that current measures may not be enough as data continues to disappoint and inflation is still softening. The next step for the ECB would be full blown quantitative easing, which is weighing on the euro overall and if announced could see further weakness for the single currency with GBP/EUR pushing towards 1.35. However, it is probably unlikely that we will see QE this year and it will probably come, if at all, after December’s release of the second tranche of the TLTRO programme uptake.
Is your professional behaviour helping to drag you down? BECOMING successful isn’t all about chance; it’s about consciously making good things happen for you. Of course a little bit of luck sprinkled into the equation is more than helpful, but the grand majority of success is down to hard work and keeping certain behaviour in check. Sometimes we can be our own worst enemy. What we do and how we do it can be the life or death of a business or for the opportunity of promotion. All too often we fall into a way of doing things that actually harms rather than advances our chance of success. Therefore, it’s essential to recognise such toxic behaviours and get rid of them quick! Busy or productive? Just because you might spend the entire day running around like a headless chicken doesn’t necessarily mean that you are getting

things done. Learn to prioritise. Take a step back, breathe and figure out what exactly needs to be done and concentrate your efforts on those things that will make an impact and encourage progress. Forget about perfection. The pursuit of perfection is a great big waste of time. Imagine it in terms of learning Spanish. Those that refuse to speak for fear of making mistakes never get to practice and their language learning stops in its tracks. It’s the same in the workplace. The best thing to do is just make an effort - try as hard as you
can and you’ll be amazed at how productive you can become. Planning is progress. Planning is the most important thing you can do to encourage success. Rolling out of bed each day with no notion in your head of what you plan to do is a waste of time and a recipe for disaster. Successful people have a plan. They set goals and navigate their working life around conquering those goals. Get strong. Everyone has a weakness or two within their professional life - a bad habit or something that drags them down. Spot these weaknesses and make an effort to improve. If you are a nervous public speaker but fancy your chances of becoming a manager, then make sure to work on this weakness. Attend a class; do whatever it takes to turn your weakness into a strength.

Check it out WE have just returned from the worst holiday ever, so a word of warning on booking a holiday. If the advert says “We pick you up from your house,” ask for the route. We were collected at 5.45am and after running around on a coach for three and a quarter hours were only 30 minutes from home! Also ask what type of transport they use: we were on a small runaround for 12 hours. It was like sitting on a spin-dryer for the whole journey. Do your homework on the location and accommodation. We booked a cruise and required an outside cabin for fresh air and a quiet time. We were not told that the only outside cabins were directly below the activities deck! We were lucky: some people had cabins directly below the disco. So the moral of our story is check, check and then check again. Dave Stewart (by email)

Dressing up POOR Mike Walsh! Having become a solid member of the style police he is missing a few very important points about dress and performance. He is clearly unaware that Mr Steve Jobs built the Apple computer empire by allowing his employees to dress in whatever mode made them feel good: look at the result. The hoary old uniform and suit argument just doesn’t gel with the facts. As a retired business advisor I have continued researching the psychological impact of Mr Walsh’s attitude versus Steve Jobs’. Sorry Mr. Walsh, but for business performance the facts are against you. Howard Hughes, a billionaire, dressed like a poor man for a great many years before his demise. Many great artists and entrepreneurs of all types have shared that mode of dress by desire or circumstances. To judge a person by their clothes is about as narrowminded as it is possible to get. man walked between my car and the car parked next to me as I was reversing. Because it was so hot I had the windows down and he indicated that I watch a car that suddenly came behind me. Then he put his hand through the window and picked up my handbag from the passenger seat. I screamed and swore at him and he threw it back into my car and jumped into the car that had been behind me. I was parked at the back of Consum in Albir and people were sitting outside a cafe not 50 yards away. The people that do this are so brazen, but I think shouting must have startled him: I am 67 and can be a bit scary! But I thought I should warn people as this is so easily done. Naming names I HAVE become increasingly frustrated by radio presenters’ failure to inform the listening public who actually sings the songs played.

I listen to a variety of local English-speaking radio stations and it has now become the norm for radio presenters to chatter on about everything other than the artist singing. During a long drive that lasted over two hours only one artist’s name was given! What is wrong with presenters? Surely the role of DJs is to actually present music? That means informing the listening public of the title of the song and the artist. Can we have less of the inane chatter and incessant promotions of everything other than the music played?
Come on local radio DJs, start behaving like professional radio presenters. Jan Holden (by email)
Long way I HAVE just read a Euro Weekly News article about the increased number of people using Alicante airport. A lot of this is due to the fact Jet2 are not using Murcia airport during the winter months, to the inconvenience of thousands of people living in the area. Sadly my husband died a few years ago, but I still spend the winter months in La Manga. A few months ago when trying to book my flights for this winter I found none landed at Murcia and I was left with the only option of Alicante airport. There are no Jet2 flights to Murcia until the end of March next year and none of the other airlines offer flights. Alicante is a good airport but there is no public transport down to La Manga and a taxi costs €120, so we are left

Christmas cheer ONCE again San Miguel de Salinas Social Services are asking for help with their Christmas campaign for the less fortunate of our local community. There are over 70 families, all with at least three children up to the age of 17, registered with Social Services in the village. They are asking for nonperishable foods along with some festive fare and toys so they can make up food parcels and gifts for Christmas and the Three Kings. The main collection point is in the old town hall in San Miguel, but a number of local restaurants, bars and businesses have kindly agreed to be collection points. These are Dolphin Properties, Captain Morgan’s Bar, Mirador Restaurant and The Nook. Social Services are asking for all items to be in to them by December 5 so they can be individually wrapped for each family and child. With your kind help and donations we can make this appeal as successful as last year’s. Trish Herbert, San Miguel de Salinas (Alicante).
How to vote REGISTERING to vote has changed in the UK. Whereas before each household had one form for everybody who lived in the property, each individual who is eligible now has to complete a form, giving address, full name, date of birth and NI number. Those wanting to register for next year’s General Election (if still eligible) can do it online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. You need your last address in the UK, full name, date of birth and NI number. You can apply for a proxy if you want, which is recommended as there may not be enough time to receive your ballot paper and return it. UST had to happen, didn’t it? It was as predictable as the flowers in May or the X Factor judges using the word ‘amazing’ about a million times a show. We are now being asked to feel sorry for some of these young toerags who left UK shores to side with the odious ISIS. “It’s not their fault,” cry the ‘uman rights brigade. It’s the media allowing the evil radicalizers to publicise their views that should be taking the blame for their terrorist temptations. What a load of pure unadulterated claptrap! I don’t care how ‘fresh faced,’ ‘well liked’ and ‘innocent’ these young men and women were. They are evil psychopaths who have committed treason against the country that
nurtured them and partaken in unforgivable acts of satanic terrorism. If they return to British shores, all of them must be locked away for life. “Oh, but some of them are too frightened to come back,” wail the parents, who should, to my mind, be locked up as well. The poor diddums have become fed up with sawing off people’s heads and shooting unarmed victims in the back. “We wanna come home now, Mum.” Get back to how it all was before we decided to run off and kill people. Well I’ve got news for them. They have all forfeited their right to ever live among decent human beings again. They are the scum of the earth and so is anyone who supports them including the lawyers who are no doubt gathering like the vultures they are to once more bleed the British taxpayer out of millions, fighting cases that will no doubt drag on for years. If I had my way I’d lock them up as well. To me they are not much better
than the non-human rubbish they will be earning millions to defend. Shouldn’t really be angry this week. Things are actually quite good. For the next two weeks I am appearing back in the old Motherland with shows as far apart as Norfolk and Blackpool. Channel 5’s OAPs Behaving Badly is coming over to film my Flying Curry Circus Christmas party on December 13. Venue to be announced. Plug plug! (Yes, I am doing it again, despite the fact that I’m still trying to live down the first one!) My double pneumonia is finally over and hopefully I don’t have prostate cancer. So it’s onward and upward. Next week’s scribble will issue from the cold and windy shores of the old country, provided I don’t get stopped at the border! Course I won’t, they let anyone in, don’t they!? Keep the faith Love Leapy leapylee2002@gmail.com.

Norwegian technology from Neater Heater makes the Spanish winter bearable F
OR most expats, staying warm in winter presents a challenging problem. After all, it is only for a few months, so a complete central heating system seems a bit excessive. Gas estufas are effective, but unhealthy, ugly and cumbersome. Log burners and pellet burners are great for the general living area, but you wouldn’t want one in every room, even if you could afford it, or had the space. Generally, what’s left are electric heaters, and there is a bewildering choice of those around, ranging from cheap, ugly ones that cost a fortune to run, all the way to space-age designs that profess to be economical, but cost the price of a second-hand car. Tony and Richard of Neater Heater understand this. Facing this problem several years ago, they discovered that those clever Norwegians held the key by

keeping the basic design of their convector heaters simple, but effective, using modern technology and materials to make them efficient and economical. The difference between a Neater Heater compared to most electric heaters is that most electric heaters use their energy in getting the heater hot, whereas the Neater Heater
focuses on getting the air in your room warm. As Tony explains: “A lot of electric heaters have relatively small surface areas. The element has to get incredibly hot to heat the casing of the heater, which then warms the air it contacts - which isn’t much as it has a small surface contact area. The Neater Heater, on the other hand, has an aluminium
element (an efficient conductor of heat) designed to have a huge surface area. When you turn the Neater Heater on, the air inside the hollow heater is warmed up very quickly as the element gets hot. This air then rises out of the top of the heater and cold air is drawn in to replace it. “This air is then heated and a convection cycle is started.
Within 15-20 minutes your room should be warm, and the thermostat will start controlling the operation of the heater, reducing your consumption.” “All this information, and more, is on our website,” Richard informs us, “you can find the size of heater you need, decide from the numerous models which one would suit you best, and decide whether to buy directly from our online shop, or whether to visit one of our agents.” Neater Heaters are not only efficient, effective, and economical, but as you would expect from a Scandinavian product, they are extremely stylish and practical. There is also a model that will suit anyone, whether it is the standard Adax Heater, the stylish Beha Heater, or the trendy Neo with digital controls, Neater Heaters are a great solution to making Spanish winters bearable.

What did you experience in your youth that kids today never will?
O
N the Costa Blanca, the general view is that the main thing kids today will never experience is simply being kids. Neil Couzens from Zenia Services said one thing he enjoyed as a child that youngsters today probably don’t was ‘building camps, and bows and arrows.’ He added: “Society has changed and everything is based around technology now and I think that is a shame. Children aren’t

STREET TALK learning skills from their parents any more although I do believe the introduction of technology has made youngsters more intelligent; they know how to find answers thanks to the likes of Google.” Keith Owen from Solar Directa believed children now miss out on the freedom to play outdoors. “I grew up in Somerset by the seaside and we would be out playing all day, getting up to all sorts before we had to come home. There were no mobile phones and parents didn’t worry, but the world is a lot uglier now and you can’t do that, parents need to be stricter,” he said. Karen from Mijas TV commented: “Kids are lucky nowadays in that they do not have to experience smoke-filled bars, restaurants, aeroplanes and offices. When I was younger everywhere we went there were smokers and as a non-

smoker all my life, I didn’t like it but had to put up with it.” Mark Scott from Aroma restaurant in Mallorca recalled ‘drinking from a hosepipe.’ Children nowadays are told not to drink from hosepipes because of the chances of catching some awful disease and Mark thinks it’s a shame as it was a fond childhood memory of his. Nicole King from Mi Marbella said ‘dialling a telephone’. She added: “Today’s youngsters will never experience the actual term ‘to dial a number’ because we have push-button phones and not the old-fashioned ‘get your finger twisted’ style like in the old days!” Ann Baxter from Mojacar Windows and Doors commented: “When we were young, we could go off into the woods to explore on our own. We had a lot more freedom than children today.”

NSURPRISINGLY, a huge leap in UKIP support was reported following the £1.7 billion EU surcharge imposed on the UK to reflect the ‘black economy’ of illegal drugs, prostitution and tobaccosmuggling within its GDP. Now, this isn’t a molehill, it’s a mountain! The EU’s penalising the UK for having the most successful economy in the EU, whilst rewarding countries like France for being economic basket cases! And as for the EU’s attempts to dismiss the problem by claiming these are the rules, no way! The
EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT: The EU needs deep reform. real issue is: how have the rules been interpreted and applied? It seems blindingly obvious different countries have different ways of operating. And that the UK has taken a more meticulous
approach to reporting income from such intangible sources as drugs, prostitution and tobaccosmuggling than Germany, France or Austria - all lined up for rebates. Or maybe failed to smell
a rat where others, more savvy, did? Unfortunately, Britain is a land of rule-makers and administrators. Show it a rule, and it’ll be applied unquestioningly. Other countries decide on different criteria. The real tragedy of the EU is that the shedloads of tax-payers’ money which have been and are still being wasted - on moving between Strasbourg and Brussels, bloated bureaucracy, pay and allowances, and duplicated diplomatic representation - would, spent sensibly under individual nations’ control, have resulted in greater prosperity and better defence against terrorists. The EU is like a rudderless ship driven by ideology and holed below the waterline. Rather than make crucial structural repairs, it settles for quick-fixes and takes on more payload (regulation,
centralisation and bureaucracy) so guaranteeing it slinks further behind and deeper in the water. And unless it endorses immediate reform - including reduction of bureaucracy and regulation, liberalisation of labour markets, overhaul of immigration controls - the UK runs the risk of going down with it. Finally, let’s return to that £1.7 billion surcharge that, we’re told, now takes account of drugs, prostitution and tobaccosmuggling. Doesn’t this number somehow indicate the UK spends more on those items than basic foodstuffs? Given my own food bill, it seems some of my fellow citizens are having a lot more fun than me! Life will be easier, they said Mike Walsh Mike, based in Mediterranean Spain, is an international journalist, author and professional writer.
I
AM of the generation that looks back with fond memories at the simplicity of life in the 1950s and 60s. If you received a bill, you wrote out a cheque, shoved it in the reply paid envelope and popped it in the letterbox. What has happened since? I will tell you: they said computers would make our lives easier. We receive a €20 subscription renewal payable online. Logging on, the complexity of navigation makes progress virtually impossible. We finally reach ‘pay’ but our troubles are only just beginning. Our bank, in its lack of wisdom, now requires online payments to be authorised by using codes printed on the back of a plastic card: fail. Although assured our cards were kosher we now find ours had been wrongly registered. Before a replacement card solution is arrived at, a series of computer hurdles that would try the patience of a NASA scientist must be gone through. Our internet service provider messes up
its accounts. As a consequence an incorrect payment anomaly shows up. No, they don’t sort out their problem. They need bank approved proof of our payments to satisfy them that we have indeed paid. This necessitates several time-consuming trips between the bank and the service supplier’s offices. Henry Ford was wasting his time when he said: “If it aint broke don’t fix it.” A basic can-opener was in the kitchen drawer in my young life. A simple device of a type used since before the Zulu Wars. This simple functional implement today is an allsinging and dancing model, but as useless as a walking stick with a wheel on it. When Phileas Fogg went on his 80 Days Around the World odyssey, a traveller could catch a train at Liverpool Lime Street and be in Manchester quicker than he can today. Purchasing a ticket was far easier. You simply bought it from the teller. You now have a formidable series of computerised and highly confusing procedures to negotiate. The number of illegal non-European immigrants in the UK is estimated in the millions. Although I am born and bred British, I cannot take my Spanish resident Central European wife to see our family in
Britain. The costs and complexities of a visa to visit this offshore European island are far too onerous. In simpler times, the RAF brought rebellious Iraq and Afghanistan to their knees by dropping £5 bombs on their £1 peasant huts. Today, the RAF fails to defeat these ‘tribesmen’ with the FGR4 Typhoon fighter that cost £17.6 billion to develop, priced at £110 million each and cost £3,875 an hour to demolish the same peasant’s hut. This week, hapless Britain washes its hands of its débâcle. Talking of washing one’s hands, whilst browsing in my medical centre I check out a 10-illustration diagram instructing me how to wash my hands. Yes, life will be easier they lied. Fun, puns and mystery millions Cassandra Nash MARIANO RAJOY: President faces yet more trouble from PP corruption allegations.
A weekly look - and not entirely impartial reaction to the Spanish political scene
T
HE latest political scandal’s codename Punica was suggested by punica granatum and a play on the surname of Francisco Granados. Accused with an associate of stashing an illegal €5.8 million in Switzerland, he is an exsenator and was second in charge after Esperanza Aguirre when she was Regional President of the Madrid Community. Aguirre, who is now Secretary General of the regional PP, insisted that she didn’t have “the slightest idea” of what Granados was up to. In the same breath she called for the courts to speed up the ongoing Gurtel case - another pun,
this time on the surname of its principal player Francisco Correa, incidentally. After six years it still hasn’t come to court, Aguirre complained. Not that she was trying to deflect attention away from Granados, of course.
More trouble MARIANO RAJOY must feel
like William Collingbourne as he was being hanged, drawn and quartered in 1484: “Oh Lord Jesus, yet more trouble!” he groaned. The president, the governing PP and to a lesser extent the PSOE socialists, all face yet more trouble in the shape of another huge politiccorruption scandal. Over the last two years 51 local and regional politicians
including six mayors and high-ranking officials in Madrid, Valencia, Murcia and Leon raked in illegal commissions of between €6 and €7 million on government contracts worth €250 million. While 300 people a day were evicted from their homes, small businesses went under and employees accepted wage cuts to retain their jobs, these
public servants creamed off money during the worst economic crisis Spain has ever endured. Nor did they do it for the greater good of party funds because that cash wasn’t destined for a spot of illicit double-accounting and salary top-ups. Every cent of it went into their own pockets and every cent of it came from the taxpayer. And every cent of those €250 million will cost the two national parties dear when those taxpayers vote in next year’s elections.
Rich pickings JOSE ANGEL FERNANDEZ VILLA, former leader of the SOMA-UGT miners’ union, explained that the €1.4 million he declared during the government’s fiscal amnesty was a legacy from his mother. Ludivina Villa died aged 91 after running a bar in
Tuilla (Asturias) which has a population of 1,200. She must have done a roaring trade and saved very, very hard.
Power hungry ENRIQUE CALVET of the UPyD party takes over the seat in the European Parliament given up by Francisco Sosa Wagner. He left following serious discrepancies with the party’s leader Rosa Diez who, Sosa claimed, “is leading the party to catastrophe.” Exit Sosa and enter Calvet who, after 48 hours of reflection, decided to take the seat despite the longstanding friendship between both men. He has a responsibility towards UPyD voters, he said. And, friendship notwithstanding, a hunger for power and generous Brussels expenses?

OPINION & COMMENT
Mysterious trip cover-ups and reason behind them
Ric Polansky Ric Polansky moved to Mojacar in 1969 as a pioneer developer. He reads extensively and has travelled in South America panning gold and looking for El Dorado.
“ENRIQUE,” she whispered to me. Hell! I jumped right out of my skin. I hadn’t seen her come in or how she got right to the foot of my desk without me noticing. “I need a favour.” She spoke softly. “Today my husband will ask you to take us on a trip to Huercal Overa on Friday. Please say no. Say you have something else scheduled.” That was unusual. Antonia, wife of my brother’s gardener, had just spoken to me. It was the first time that I could recall - ever. I gave her my best perplexed look and tilted my head down to stare at my desk. When I lifted my eyes to make further enquiries, she was gone. Now, what that was all about troubled me. But, daily events came at me from all angles while learning to live in my newlyadopted kingdom of Spain. And, yup, Luis did ask me if I could drive him to Huercal Overa for a few hours on Friday. The next Monday, Antonia was back in my office, dressed in the same black frock she always wore and extremely nervous. She wanted to know if she could invite me and the family for paella on Sunday. “Ya, I guess that’s alright,” I muttered. And: “Oh, if Luis asks you to take him to

MEDIEVAL EXPERIENCE: No wonder Antonia didn’t want to visit the dentist! Huercal Overa next Tuesday, please tell him you loaned out the car, or some reason why the trip can’t be performed.” Her words were precise, exacting, and pleading. While my mind became a fog again, wondering what this ‘driving affair’ was all about, Antonia vanished again. Well, we
had eaten paella every Sunday for the last three months at Luis’s restaurant and we paid this time just like all the others. No special deal. Hmmm, something’s up. A mystery, unheard of between grass-root friends. Life was an open book living in Mojacar. Everyone knew the comings, goings, and bowel movements of
everyone else. Life was lived in a goldfish bowl and shared openly - like it or not. But, the perplexity of the mystery confounded me so very much it got the wheels of my head spinning day and night. However, thinking about it enough brought a mini-solution. I would ‘reverse order the puzzle’ and make the information flow my way. I sought out Luis and apologised that I hadn’t been able to aid his journeys because of car problems. Would this Wednesday or Thursday be OK? “Oh, that’s wonderful,” he replied as if a weight had been lifted from him. “It’s not for me,” he announced. “It’s to take Antonia to the dentist. She moans and groans all night about her toothache; none of us can sleep.” The dentist adventure was a four-hour ordeal and I didn’t blame her for not wanting to go. I wish I hadn’t. It was a medieval experience that I can only tell when plied with much drink, and even then, most reluctantly.

Don’t get down about the small stuff - draw on your inner strength Erica Russell Watson: My journey – and I’m driving
26th
SEPTEMBER: Back at home a bit bruised and sore, but happy to be in familiar surroundings. The next few days would be all about rest, getting my drain taken out when the levels had dropped sufficiently and above all taking things easy with my right arm. I was under strict instructions not to lift anything or to exert myself in any way. I had been unaware initially what the long term implications of having all my lymph nodes removed would be. As I no longer had a lymphatic drainage system I could be left with a serious side effect called Lymphedema. Lymphedema is a condition of localised fluid retention and tissue swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system which returns liquid to the thoracic duct and then the bloodstream. So tissues with lymphedema are at risk of infection and swelling. There are exercises and physiotherapy you can do to
ERICA: Finding ways to adapt when the simplest tasks become impossible. help your system but I will go into this in future blogs. Prevention is better than cure! Hence no lifting, no lying on the affected side, no tight clothing and, in the longer term, avoidance of rigorous sports and when doing any sport I would have to wear an arm support for compression purposes. For me this was going to be the most challenging aspect! The cancer and operations I could deal with, but the prospect of possibly not being
able to play racket sports for the long term or even indefinitely was going to be tough to take. You just have to find alternatives or learn to play left handed! Also the realisation that the simplest tasks, in the short term, would be impossible hit home - no chopping food, washing up, changing the beds, opening things, lifting and definitely no driving for a few weeks. So what do you do? Adapt. Necessity is the mother of all
invention. I started to use my left arm for most tasks. The sight of me sitting on my kitchen work surface on top of a grater and using my left hand to muster a sprinkling of lemon zest must have been something else! Incidentally, freeze lemons and grate the rinds into your food, not only does it intensify the flavour but it is supposed to be an enemy to cancer so a friend to us! Don’t get too down over these smaller issues and find another way of doing things. We are all stronger than we imagine it’s just that we don’t realise it until we are tested. Draw on your inner strength and you will be amazed how you overcome every obstacle put in your way. For me every day got better, I ate well thanks to the army of Spanish neighbours and friends bringing food to my door like ants! My son became my nurse and changed my bandages, much to his credit, as many adults would have balked at the sight of my scars. For those of you who have cancer and have children, my tip is to be as honest as possible but carry on as normal. Every cloud has a silver lining and my illness has given us all an opportunity to recalibrate. It was time the children took on more responsibility domestically
and they have stepped up to the challenge. Aside from cooking, cleaning, washing and general household chores, it has become a time for them to show greater maturity and autonomy. It has been tough for them but pulling together helps me along the road to recovery so I applaud their efforts and their spirit despite some grumbles at first! My hope is that living through this experience will make them more resilient and better able to cope with the challenges that life will inevitably throw at them over the coming years. Lead by example. If you are a bag of nerves just imagine how your children and people around you will feel! No shame in having a good cry, I hold my hand up! It is a good release but get over it and dust yourself off and get off the canvas. A little dramatic? Not really you are in a battle for your life. You have to go the full 10 rounds so come out your corner fighting with your gloves up. You will beat cancer with a positive attitude. Your illness is a journey and one that will deal you curve balls. My curve ball was just about to be launched… the phone call I had been waiting for with my operation results came. The news was not good.

Pro-biotic choc-ice could help prevent sore throats
HEALTH & BEAUTY
CURER: Pro-bio ice cream showed sore throat improvement. AUTUMN is here and it may not be ice cream weather anymore, but a new choc-ice could be just what the doctor ordered in helping to ward off sore throats. Scientists at a dental college and hospital in India have tested a chocice containing a friendly bacteria, which is normally found in the human intestines, to see if it had any effect on streptococcus, the strain of bacteria that commonly causes sore throats. Thirty volunteers were asked to eat a choc-ice every day for 18 days. The half of the group who ate a pro-biotic treat had less streptococci in their saliva.

Bar Restaurante Laguna TWENTY-SIX-YEARS ago two brothers came to visit their parents and fell in love with the area so they stayed, built and opened the Millionaire Bar, then a year later Nigel and Stuart moved to the Restaurant Bar Laguna where they have been for the last 25 years. The restaurant has an international menu with a focus on Spanish cuisine. It is always said if you want a good paella then go where the Spanish go, if this is true then Restaurant Bar Laguna is the place to be. In the summer up to 50 paellas a day are served to the Spanish holidaymakers as they are famous for their excellent quality. There is also the added advantage that you don’t have to book in advance. John Robinson, their chef, joined the team some time ago adding to their well established reputation. John’s mouth-watering signature dishes are to die for with specials added to the menu each night. Restaurant Laguna is not a sports bar at all but it the place to go to see the Formula One as Nigel and Stuart are lifetime fans with an impressive memorabilia collection, the Michael Schumacher helmet a must on these occasions. Window boxes for all
Dick Handscombe
Gardening Corner By Spain’s best known expatriate gardening author living in Spain for 25 years.
THERE are few properties that would not be enhanced by one or two window boxes placed on a window sill, edge of a balcony, or the wall of an apartment terrace. Window boxes planted with traditional geraniums, or a wide range of other suitable plants, are an easy way to brighten up the facades of some otherwise drab houses and apartment blocks throughout the year. Why window boxes? 1. To brighten up the outlook from windows and doors onto balconies and terraces. 2. To provide a screen from prying eyes. 3. To brighten up the appearance of the house from outside. 4. To give the appearance the house or apartment is lived in.
5. To brighten up dull courtyards. 6. To brighten up the semi shade under large trees by hanging window boxes directly from boughs or on hanging shelves. Overcoming problem of plastic coated aluminium windows Most houses have convenient wide window sills that provide space for window boxes between the window frames and wrought iron security grills. Some also have small balconies with metal railings. However most modern plastic/aluminium windows with integral double glazing and security blinds result in very narrow
or even no sills. Fortunately many garden centres now stock window boxes with metal supports that can be hung below the window sill. Similar supports can be attached to the railings of an apartment terrace. What to plant? All year round: Zonal and trailing geraniums/pelargoniums - except in heavy frost/snow when they need to be put in a cold frame or greenhouse for the winter. Spring, summer and autumn: Trailing petunias, portulacas, zonal and trailing geraniums/pelargoniums, carnations, felicia /agathaea, succulents and in the shade fuchsias and busy lizzies.
Spring: Trailing sweet peas, verbena and freesias. Autumn and winter: Heathers and pansies. Winter: Cyclamens, poinsettias, pansies, stocks and bulbs. Colour can also be provided by the fruit and foliage of plants. a. Fruits - the fruits on mock pepper and mini pomegranate plants can be attractive in the autumn. b. Foliage - begonias, spider plant, variegated ivies, herbs - on the widow sill outside the kitchen and dwarf conifers in semi shaded situations. © Dick Handscombe www.gardenspain.com November 2014

Cats that are aggressive to humans
IF a previously friendly cat starts biting or scratching you, it is essential you take it to the vet. A cat in pain from dental disease, cystitis, arthritis or injury may bite when handled. It may bite if it is seriously ill or if it has a brain tumour. Pregnant cats or cats with litters are aggressive in defence of their litters. When the kittens have grown up, the mother’s behaviour usually alters. NEVER punish or chase. This will intensify aggression. Ignore bad behaviour by walking away, keeping silent (no screams), withdrawing eye contact, no confrontations. Reward calm behaviour with cat treats. Avoid situations which will result in cat aggression. The difficulty for owners is working out what kind of aggression they are dealing with. This is where help from a cat behaviour counsellor can be essential to help reduce and manage the aggression.

Aggression to humans often results from fear. The problem may arise from a dysfunctional kittenhood. The kitten is brought up without enough contact with humans, and therefore will never become domesticated. To be truly domesticated, kittens need to be handled before the age of eight weeks. Relatively socialised cats may still bond, but probably only to close family. It will be best to give this kind of cat plenty of space and independence. Allow the cat to initiate contact with you, as this freedom to choose will result in more, rather than less, affection. Cats under stress may also become aggressive to owners. In general try to reduce the stress in this cat’s life, so it becomes less anxious. More next week. Thanks to Celia Haddon for her input. AGGRESSION: May result from fear.
Share some furry love all around ABANDONED dogs and cats can be seen all over the world, huddled together in major cities or roaming alone looking for food and company. The animals which are

starving, thin and in need of love, prompted two college students from Chile, Violeta Caro Pinda and Felipe Carrasco Guzman, to raise awareness with a creative approach.
The two undergraduates tied pink balloons around street dogs and cats which have phrases written on them like, ‘hug me,’ ‘play with me,’ and the most poignant one, ‘don’t leave me.’
The pair are hoping the rest of the world will take on their example and spread a bit of kindness and happiness to these forlorn and neglected creatures.

are not yet part of our organisation to do so because we have advantages in many fields other than telecommunications.” Martos went on to thank Orange and the provincial officials for their work and collaboration. Meanwhile, Dionisio Rodriguez, Executive Accounts in Almeria for Orange and One Telecom, pointed out other advantages to businesses including zero cost of calls between lines of the same company throughout Europe.

Ruling raises question: to sell or not to sell? HOME sellers in Spain can take advantage of a new tax measure. The central government has introduced a new tax reform act for 2015 that will mean a significant tax reduction for many citizens. Owners who are in the process of selling their homes will be affected by the new measure, since the capital gain will in future be calculated without the correction coefficients that allowed compensation for inflation and the reduction of increased value. That means that someone who bought a
house in 2004 at €150,000 and sold it now for €200,000, would pay €10,880 in IRPF tax under current legislation. But if they held on until January 1, the amount would be reduced to €7,207. But for those who bought their houses more than 20 years ago it may be advisable to accelerate the selling process. A house bought in 1976 at two million pesetas (€12,020), sold now at €222,000 would pay €10,869 tax (IRPF) under the current legislation. The modification of the act would see a dramatic increase in the
tax paid, to €43,995 after January 1. For this reason, it may be advisable for those owners who have owned their homes for a long time to speed up the selling process before January 1, to avoid the tax increase. On the whole, the modification is good news for owners who bought their homes after 1994, who will enjoy a tax reduction and it may well be worth waiting until the New Year before selling up. People should seek professional advice on these points for the full ramifications of the changes.

Mortgage cash is starting to flow
THERE were a total of 15,040 new mortgages granted on homes in August at an average value of €102,430. That was an increase of 5.3 per cent in the value of mortgages given on August 2013, and there was a 31 per cent rise in the total capital loaned year on year to €1.54 billion. Both figures are good news from the property market as they show liquidity is starting to flow from banks once more. In the depths of the banking crisis many prospective home owners found it extremely difficult to finance the purchase of a property as the banks, many bailed out by Spanish and European tax payers, refused to pass on the billions of euros received to consumers. Nervous of being more exposed to bad debts after the property bubble burst, they held on to the
bailout payments instead to fill black holes in their balance sheets. That meant a second hit to the property market after the crash as even those in steady jobs wanting to buy a house couldn’t raise the money to complete. According to the National Institute of Statistics, the number of mortgages granted rose 23.8 per cent in August compared to the same month in 2013, making it the third consecutive quarter of double digit rises. Only two regions saw fewer home mortgages in August than in the same month of 2013 – La Rioja (down 40.9 per cent) and the Canary Islands (down 15.5 per cent). Everywhere else in the country saw postitve annual rates, led by the Balearics with a massive 83.4 per cent rise.

Caterham F1 driver takes pole for PH Mallorca at first Palma Port Kart Cup A STREET circuit karting race conceived in Monaco had its debut in Spain recently. Moll Vell marina in Mallorca was transformed into an 880-metre street circuit for the inaugural Palma Port Kart Cup. Team PH Mallorca, with two karts entered,
including one piloted by future F1 star Roberto Merhi, took pole position and a third-place finish in the three-hour endurance race as well as an impressive first place in the one-hour feature race. Alec Dudfield from property developers, PH Mallorca, said: “Sponsored by Red Bull and conceived in Monaco, this foundational Palma Port Kart Cup had all the ingredients for success, so we pulled out the stops to field two great teams. In Kart 17 we had 23-year-old Roberto Merhi, an upcoming F1 star from Castellon who raced in FP1 for Caterham at Monza, Suzuki and Sochi this season, alongside Riccardo
Homuth, a Balearic Karting Champion from Santa Ponsa, Mark Owens, a World Series Superkart race winner from Northamptonshire, and Mike Richards, Founder of PH Mallorca in Port Andratx and a former Porsche Carrera Cup driver. “In Kart 16 we raced Miguel Julià, the 2006 World Karting Champion from Palma de Mallorca, Nil Monserrat, a Professional Racing Driver from Barcelona, and Coach Pedro Ivar, owner of Pedro Ivars Racing Academy in Denia. Needless to say our plan worked and it was great to see Merhi earn a deserved pole and Kart 16
take two podium finishes including the top step. “With highly competitive wheel-to-wheel racing on the street circuit, we’re looking forward to defending our success when the Palma Port Kart Cup returns for its second outing.” Despite both endurance

THE Turre Mixed Rinks Open was held at Cabrera Lawn Bowling Club on Sunday November 2. All the bowling clubs in the area entered teams and the competition was played on a round robin basis in two groups. Each round was seven ends and had to be played in one hour. There was some lovely
bowling and the top of each group changed constantly after each round. After the final round it was only shot difference that separated the winners of each group. Almeria Bowling Club took the plaudits by winning both groups and contested the final, in which a team of Colin Wright, John Fitzgerald, Chris Ewer and Christine Fitzpatrick, played Sheila Allen, Sylvia Pritchard, Tom Mullen and Reg Birmingham. Reg’s team started the better winning the first two ends but Colin’s team fought back well to win the final 10 - 3.
