YOUR PAPER, YOUR VOICE, YOUR OPINION

Artistic awakening By Matthew Elliott

Amid the stunning scenery of Mallorca’s Valldemossa, nestled in the hills of the Tramuntana mountains, Hollywood icon Michael Douglas announced that he will produce and star in a hotly anticipated remake of hugely successful German film ‘Head Full of Honey.’ The actor, who with his wife, Welsh siren Catherine ZetaJones, owns one of the island’s most luxurious properties, was holidaying there for a few days and met with his friend, renowned German actor and director Til Schweiger, before broadcasting the news. “Spent a few days at our beautiful home in Mallorca and met up with friend Til Schweiger, Germany’s leading actor/director, with whom I will do a picture early next year. Til is a great guy and I am looking forward to starring in and producing a remake of his very successful German picture

Head Full of Honey,” wrote Douglas. The original film, directed by Schweiger, was a massive hit in Germany, drawing more than seven million cinephiles and being short-listed for the country’s submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars. Schweiger is one of the few German actors to have cracked Hollywood, although the American remake of his film will have to see incredible success if he wants to buy Douglas and

Zeta-Jones’ home, on the market since last year. Valued at more than €50 million, their 247acre estate is viewed as among the most expensive on the island.

STATION PROBLEMS: The security guards of the Intermodal Station are complaining about the deplorable state of their changing room. By Sandra Galo THE Workers’ Commissions trade union (CCOO) has denounced the “deplorable” state of the security guard changing room at the Palma Intermodal Station. The CCOO union of the Trablisa company has filed a written complaint with

the Council of Health denouncing the terrible state of the room. The union said that the Transport Consortium had given orders to the cleaning company Cisnsa not to clean the changing room which also serves as a rest area and kitchen for the bus station’s security guards. As a result, the room lacks the most basic standards of safety and hygiene.

The union warned that the presence of rats and cockroaches as well as lizards in the room is putting the health of workers and users of the bus station at risk. Workers complained that there aren’t any bin bags to throw away rubbish, the bathrooms are filthy and there isn’t any toilet paper.

Do guns kill, or do people kill? The great gun debate

EWN

Your papers, your views Our readers have been expressing their views about gun control which appeared on our website.

www.euroweeklynews.com Here are a few of your comments some of which have had to be cut due to size but we are always happy to hear from everyone even if their comments are uncomplimentary.

Hunter killers IT always amazes me to see hordes of hunters with their dogs entering specially preserved areas so that they can go shooting animals for sport as much as for food. Everyone complains about an old lion being shot and that was terrible, but do we really need to allow such wholesale hunting to take place? Marsha

Pest control THERE is no genuine reason for anyone to use an automatic weapon for hunting and in the UK they even banned the ownership of automatic shotguns because of their possible use in criminal activities. At least in Spain the bulk of all guns are shotguns, many being used for pest control, but it is worrying to discover how many handguns are legitimately owned. Tony

GUN CONTROL: Barack Obama is known to be in favour of more gun restrictions in America. By Eleanor Hawkins THE recent mass murder of 49 people by a gunman at a gay club in Orlando, Florida, has once again opened up the can of worms that is the great gun control debate in the United States. While American citizens have the right under the Second Amendment of the US Constitution, adopted in 1791, to keep and bear arms (and many see any attempt at gun control as a breach of this constitutional right), as the Senate prepares to discuss possible measures, such as preventing those suspected of terrorist links from buying guns, there seem to be signs that Americans could be becoming more willing to accept limited restrictions in the aftermath of the horrific massacre. Although President Barack Obama is known to be in favour of more gun control, the presumptive Republican nominee to run for president Donald Trump has admitted there is scope for more restrictions, but insisted he will “save the second amendment.” However in Orlando, where he travelled to comfort victims’ relatives and survivors, Obama said:

While as a mother I am completely against guns, I have had to face the fact that wishing they didn’t exist is not going to stop them existing.

“Those who defend the easy accessibility of assault weapons should meet these families. Our politics have conspired to make it as easy as possible for a terrorist or even just a disturbed individual to buy extraordinarily powerful weapons, and they can do so legally. I hugged grieving parents and they asked ‘Why does this keep happening?’” Gun owners claim that if ‘the baddies’ have guns, they must be able to defend themselves, and go as far as to insist that the guns themselves are not the problem at all. Victor Pfund, from Texas, told

EWN: “Guns don’t kill. Gay, Muslim, jihadist ********s kill.” While in Spain this may seem a matter which is of little importance, a little-known fact is that there is one legally owned gun in the country for every 16 inhabitants according to Guardia Civil records, although controls are far stricter, with only certain people being able to own weapons, and a number of different licences required to do so. Those who are allowed to obtain licences range from military, police and state security force members to hunters, however there is also one type of licence (type B) available to those able to prove that they ‘need a gun to protect themselves from serious threats.’ These include jewellers and people who have received terrorism threats. Although they are subjected to exhaustive studies, they are not required to undergo any tests on use of the weapon itself and are also restricted to 100 bullets per year, which they claim seriously limits their ability to shoot their guns correctly if they did not have previous experience. There are currently 8,592 holders

of this type of licence in Spain, meaning there are 8,592 people out there carrying guns who may not even know how to use them properly, Madrid’s Olympic Shooting Federation vice-president Felipe Lopez explained. Of the total number of guns legally registered in Spain (2,918,136), 75 per cent are shotguns and 11 per cent are rifles used by hunters. With the gun debate also running in the European Commission following recent terrorist attacks in Paris, the National Arms Association in Spain poses an important question to us all, stating: “It makes no sense to limit the number of legal arms in the fight against organised criminal groups that use illegal weapons. Placing more restrictions on gun ownership is not the way to ensure criminals can’t kill.” While as a mother I am completely against guns, I have had to face the fact that wishing they didn’t exist is not going to stop them existing, and believe that there are some convincing arguments from both sides. Are we really naïve enough to believe that passing laws will stop those intent on evil from breaking them?

Personal use MY son lives in Florida so whilst I can see both sides of the argument I am glad that he has guns that are locked in his safe. He takes them in another locked unit when he goes shooting at the club, and has learned to shoot and handle the gun properly. Kay

Gun control FUNNY how countries with the strictest gun controls have fewer people killed by guns than those that have less strict controls, no correlation between the two of course. Sean

American way WHILE some of the weapons available are certainly over the top, guns are an intrinsic part of American culture and won’t go away any time soon. Walter

PALMA Town Hall has finished the removal of the antitourist graffiti from the walls of protected buildings in Palma’s city centre. The total of eight messages painted in the city centre were removed during four working days in the streets of Can Duai, Capuchinas, San Alonso, Gerreria, Angeles, Posada de Santa Teresa, Sastre Rojo and Peleteria. The Palma Town Hall explained that, since the graffiti was painted on protected buildings, specific authorisation by the Commission of the Historical Centre of the City Council was required to proceed, which caused the delay in the removal of the graffiti. The City Council explained that Emaya (the Municipal Water and Sewer Company) also had done some tests of the technique intended to be used for the removal of the graffiti so that it could be ap-

More passengers jumping aboard THE Municipal Transport Company (EMT) gained more than 655,000 passengers between January and May compared to the same period last year. The main reason for the 4.29 per cent growth of public transport users is tourism. The lines that have increased the most are Line 23 (Palma-Arenal-Cala Blava) which has transported 71,892 passengers more in the first five months of the year, Line 1 (Port-Palma-Airport) with a 14.65 per cent increase and Line 25 (Playa de Palma) with an 11.9 per cent increase. The Palma City Council wants to buy 100 buses to modernise the fleet, provide better service and reduce maintenance costs. It needs around â‚Ź30 million for the endeavour and hopes to receive European funding to help with the expense. Thirty-one new drivers have been incorporated to help improve the service. A study on the needs of each line is being conducted to be able to implement improvements in frequency when a part of the fleet is renewed.

New rules in force for public buses By Sandra Galo MALLORCA’s public buses have new rules for passengers and drivers to abide by. One of the more obvious rules understandably for security reasons is the prohibition of explosive devices and material. Passengers are also prohibited from boarding buses in swimwear or without a shirt and are not allowed aboard if drunk or under the influence of drugs. Standing will only be permissible on certain buses with walking around prohibited while the vehicle is in motion. A majority vote will decide on issues related to temperature including air conditioning and whether windows are open or closed. When there is no clear majority, the driver decides. New rules have also been introduced for drivers who must comply with certain obligations regarding safety and professionalism. For example, drivers cannot converse with passengers nor

According to jet charter company Victor, founded by Clive Jackson in 2011, private jet traffic has risen 49 per cent from April to May with London Luton being the most popular point of departure followed by Manchester and Birmingham. Jackson explained that “Mallorca is where Victor’s success story started” and it “remains one of our busiest leisure destinations.” The CEO of Victor commented that “as our ‘on demand’ offering continues to grow, interest in Mallorca and other Balearic Islands will only intensify further.”

Blocked bank accounts due to excess spending By Sandra Galo UNPAID debts including mortgages, personal credit and credit cards have resulted in 85,000 blocked bank accounts in the Balearics. According to the company ‘Resuelve tus Deudas’ (Solve Your Debts), 70 per cent of the blocked accounts belong to families with the remaining 30 per cent belonging to small and medium-sized businesses. The legal director of Resuelve tus Deudas explained that although the Balearics is one of the richest regions in Spain, people are now paying for excesses during the years prior to and during the crisis. To make matters worse, salaries are low which exacerbates the situation and places people at risk of bankruptcy. In terms of percentage, the actual number of people on the islands that are affected is around 7.7 per cent of the population of 1,100,000 inhabitants. Water usage do’s and don’ts By Sandra Galo FIRST-YEAR secondary students in Pollensa have compiled a list of Do’s and Don’ts for responsible water consumption. It’s common to see posters and leaflets in different establishments around Pollensa encouraging residents and tourists to save water and now first-year students from the Guillem Cifre de Colonya Secondary School have joined the initiative using

what they have learned from lessons about rainfall and meteorology to create the list. The students’ list, which will be distributed with the support of the city council, contains recommendations for water usage including the most appropriate times to water plants and the need to use efficient irrigation systems in gardens. For tourists, recommendations include saving water as if they are in their own homes, reusing towels, and turning off

taps while brushing teeth. The mayor of Pollensa thanked students for their work. The manager of Emser, the municipal water company, announced to the students that the company would invest €1,000 to print posters and spread their water saving message. The list of Do’s and Don’ts for responsible water consumption is written in several languages including Catalan, Spanish, English, German and Italian.

Brexit possibility overshadows all Commentary by Moneycorp

EUR weekly currency update A mediocre week for the euro saw it strengthen by a cent and a quarter against sterling, while it lost half a US cent. The dominant theme was next week’s UK referendum, and it was not just the pound that was affected: Investors around the world suddenly realised that Britain’s exit, were it to happen, could have an unsettling effect on other economies, not least that of the eurozone. The looming Brexit shadow meant that investors paid much less than the usual attention to economic data. As it happened, the few from Euroland either met or exceeded forecasts: Industrial production rebounded by 1.1% and the trade surplus widened in April; employment increased by 0.3% in the first quarter; inflation was unchanged at 0-0.1% in May. There were also decent retail sales and employment numbers from the UK, but they didn’t do sterling much good. USD weekly currency update A vaguely useful week for the dollar took it

two cents higher against sterling and it added half a cent against the euro. The economic data from the United States were mostly respectable as, indeed, were those from the UK. Each reported better than expected retail sales in May and in both countries inflation came in a tick lower than forecast; for the States it was 1.0% and for Britain 0.3%. Two topics overshadowed the ecostats, to the extent that the data were all but ignored by investors. One was the Federal Reserve’s decision to leave interest rates unchanged; the other was next week’s UK referendum on continued membership of the EU. The Fed chairperson’s specific mention of the referendum in her press conference, as a factor in the no-change decision, was symptomatic of a growing perception that Britain’s exit from the EU would have economic ramifications far beyond the Channel. In every case the apparent cause was the imminent UK referendum on EU membership, which has come to be seen as a threat not only to Britain but to the global economy as a whole. That world view was made clear when the central banks of the United States and Japan both cited it as a factor in their decisions not to alter monetary policy. The week’s Canadian economic data were

positive. An additional 14,000 jobs took the rate of unemployment down from 7.1% to 6.9% in May, and April’s manufacturing shipments increased by a bigger than expected 1.0% in April. Overall the Canadian dollar weakened by a dozen ticks against sterling and it lost half a US cent. AUD weekly currency update Next week’s referendum on Britain’s continued membership of the EU has moved on from being a purely domestic issue: it is now seen by investors as a threat to the world economy. The new nervousness brought an end two weeks of upward progress for the ‘commodity’ dollars; the Aussie, the Loonie and the Kiwi. It did not amount to a reversal though: the Australian dollar lost a scant third of a US cent and it was up by two cents against sterling. The Australian ecostats were mostly positive: Although consumer and business confidence edged lower, the economy created 18,000 jobs in May and unemployment was steady at 5.7%.

AIRBORNE CONTAMINANTS: Part of the air pollution in the Balearics is caused by maritime traffic. By Sandra Galo THE entire population of the Balearic Islands breathes unhealthy air with levels of pollution higher than what is recommended by the World Health Organization. According to Ecologists in Action (a confederation of Spanish ecological groups), around 150,000 people in the Balearics live in areas where air pollution exceeds the legal limits allowed in Spain. This number represents around 13 per cent of the island’s population. The data is part of the group’s

annual report on air quality in Spain which was presented this month by the group. The results of the study, in reference to the Balearics, once again put the spotlight on pollution mainly caused by car and maritime traffic as well as power plants which produce electricity. Miguel Ceballos, coordinator of the report, explained that “in the case of the Balearics the main pollutant is tropospheric ozone” often called ‘bad ozone’. This type of pollution can damage living tissue and break down certain materials and affects

both people and vegetation. The Balearic Islands are affected 100 per cent by this ‘bad ozone.’ Ecologists in Action collected and analysed data from 20 air quality monitoring stations in the Balearics. In the majority of them, higher levels of pollution were recorded than those recommended by the World Health Organization. The worst readings were taken at the Joan March hospital in Bunyola, Sant Antoni de Portmany (Ibiza) and the Casas de Binifaldó in the Serra de Tramuntana.

Unregulated holiday homes don’t pay tourist tax THE Balearic Advisory Council is in general agreement with the content of the Tourist Tax Act draft but is suggesting that a number of stipulations need to be added

to the text. The tourist tax which is due to take effect on July 1 does not include ‘collaborative’ housing for tourists. Collaborative accommodations are

properties marketed by websites like the online holiday rental service Airbnb that do not provide tourist services. Regional Finance Councillor Catalina Cladera pointed

out that this type of accommodation is beyond the scope of the law. She added that the government must change the Tourism Act as soon as possible to establish and regulate the tourist rental property in all its forms on the islands. Cladera said that the government will amend the tourist tax law as soon as possible to include regulation for all types of housing and plans to introduce this next year. Online rental websites Airbnb, Homelidays, Niumba, Windu, Homeaway and Rentalia currently offer around 80,000 properties in the Balearic Islands representing 20,000 more than in 2015. This phenomenon is what the Council of Tourism aims to regulate with the amendment to the Tourist Act, but its complexity and the problems posed by the Central Administration and Brussels which do not see this type of housing offer as tourism, impede the process.

The fire which started around 11.30am on June 20 in Calle Andreu Feliu de Palma resulted in the evacuation of the building as well as two others nearby. Explosions caused by some of the tools in the shop could be heard and enormous clouds of black smoke darkened the sky. A former police officer was slightly injured due to smoke inhalation while helping his par-

The firefighters reported that the patio of the workshop was filled with a great quantity of appliance parts including cables, frames and PVC which caused the thick polluted smoke. About 200 square metres of terrace above the shop collapsed due to the intense heat which caused the beams to melt. The building remains empty while technicians assess the extent of the damage and determine whether the structure is safe.

Illegal private nightlife flickr by Marc Sturzenegger

NEWS

LUCRATIVE LIVELIHOOD: Private parties charging admission are gaining popularity. PARTIES are becoming lucrative business in the Balearics which are now experiencing a sharp increase in illegal parties held on private property or in establishments not authorised for the activity. The main reason for the popularity of these types of events is the apparent ‘impunity’ organisers have since island authorities have insufficient personnel to monitor and sanction the activity. President of the Balearic Association of Ballrooms and Clubs (Abone) Jesus Sanchez

explained that “inspection services cannot cope” given the enormous economic activity that is now developing in the Balearics. Illegal nightlife, according to Sanchez, violates the law in two areas. One is that illegal parties in private homes or bars and cafes which transform into weekend nightclubs are not complying with regulations for these types of activities. The other is that they are committing tax fraud. The parties held in private homes charging an entrance

fee are promoted through social networks and take place without any regulation since many of the parties are held in homes located in rural areas and the Guardia Civil cannot enter without a court order. The other activity being denounced by Abone is establishments including bars and cafes that transform into nightclubs at the weekends without complying with regulations governing nightclubs. Although more easily detected, the level of impunity is remarkably high, notes Sanchez.

According to Tots per Pollença, the bar which was ceded to the town six years after the death of the owner in 2008 conveys a ‘bad image’. Before her death, the owner of Bar Katy left a handwritten note in which she expressed her desire for the premises to be used as a “foundation for the people of Pollensa”. The bar is located on the ground floor of a building with access to the two streets of Voramar and Pescador. The premises cover an area of 183 square metres with an added 18 metres of patio. The bar is valued at €507,000. Tots per Pollença said that the current administration has done absolutely nothing with the premises.

PUERTO POLLENSA: Bar Katy will be used for cultural, social and youth events. Mayor of Pollensa Miquel Angel March responded by saying that Bar Katy will be a multipurpose facility for

cultural, social and youth events. March added that after the summer, the bar will be cleaned and prepared for its new use.

Blazing bus engulfed by flames 2017 Holidays A BUS belonging to the Transport de les Illes Balears (TIB) company caught on fire just before entering the village of Valldemossa. The bus was on the PalmaValldemossa-Soller route when a fire broke out around 8.30pm. The driver and 40 passengers managed to evacuate the bus before it was completely engulfed in flames. The blaze spread to a farm on the side of the road causing some of the trees to

catch fire. A column of smoke produced by the fire could be seen from as far away as Palma. Local Police and Civil Protection from Valldemossa were the first to arrive on the scene and immediately cut off the road until firefighters were able to arrive to put out the fire. Guardia Civil officers arrived soon after and diverted traffic. The cause of the fire was apparently due to the engine of the vehicle overheating.

THE regional government has approved the calendar for next year with 12 official holidays. The holidays are January 6 (Epiphany), March 1 (Balearic Islands Day), April 13 (Holy Thursday), April 14 (Good Friday), April 17 (Easter Monday), May 1 (Labour Day), August 15 (Assumption Day), October 12 (National Day of Spain), November 1 (All Saints Day), December 6 (Constitution Day), December 8 (the Immaculate Conception) and Christmas Day (December 25).

Opposition to proposed new city logo By Sandra Galo

A CHANGE to Palma’s tourist logo is on hold due to opposition by the Partido Popular and various associations who say that changing it is political interference. A proposal for a tender worth €16,000 to de-

sign a new image logo for the city dropping ‘de Mallorca’ has been delayed. Partido Popular’s Javier Bonet expressed that the change would affect the Palma 365 Foundation whose success has been because politicians have not interfered with the work of the professionals. Bonet explained that a change in the logo would be political saying, “Although they might want to dress it up”

the change coincides with the city’s name change. Bonet insisted that decisions affecting the Foundation should not be taken when there are votes in opposition and added that the proposal was withdrawn due to opposition by his party as well as businesses. Tourism councillor and vice president of Palma 365 Joana Adrover said that the proposed change

THE Brutatlo event in Andratx which took place on Saturday (June 18) had a record number of participants with more than 700 taking part in the entertaining sports event. Teams dressed in creative costumes had to pass 20 fun-filled tests in different streets of the town following a 2.5 kilometre circuit which started in the Palau d’Esports and finished in Son Prim. The unusual tests involved pools of water, mud and dirt. Prizes were awarded for the most original team and for those who finished first in each category including male, female and mixed teams. The proceeds from the unique obstacle course event will be given to the Balearic Multiple Sclerosis Association and to the delegation of the Andratx Association against Cancer.

is not political and has actually been proposed by the management calling it “updating” rather than “re-branding.” Adrover explained that the director of the Foundation found that the current logo did not fit well with the current urban tourism. She added that the word ‘Mallorca’ would be kept to make it relevant to the entire island.

Councillor demands a ‘macho day’ By Sam Croft A PP councillor has balked at a bill seeking more visibility for the LGBT community, and conversely proposed all groups merit increased visibility and there should be a ‘macho day.’ The bill was introduced in response to the recent attack on an Orlando gay club that left 49 dead. In the wake of the attack, councillors from the Mes Party in Mallorca have argued that public institutions need to make an effort to speak out against homophobia, and more protection in general is needed for the LGBT community. However, PP representative Carles Simarro, who is also the former mayor of Soller, railed against the proposal, arguing that “all groups

needed visibility”, and that there could be a ‘macho day’ instead. Ultimately his efforts were in vain, as despite five PP councillors abstaining from the vote and one voting against, the bill was passed due to the support of the opposition parties. Simarro’s comments have since been widely lampooned on social media, with blithe retorts including, “You know who were very ‘macho day’? The Village People,” and “Isn’t macho day every day?”

STRANGE ATTRACTION: Balconies at hotels on islands seem to be magnets for the ‘balconing’ craze.

Boozy ‘balconing’ craze By Matt Ford THE Foreign And Commonwealth Office (FCO) and the Travel Association (ABTA) have renewed their campaign for British holidaymakers to ‘use their balconies safely’ after a recent flurry of catastrophes left several people in hospital. Three Brits were killed after plummeting from Spanish balconies in 2015, as the baffling craze of ‘balconing’, which in-

volves leaping into a swimming pool from a hotel room, or climbing between balconies, shows no sign of abating. Many such incidents involve young people and alcohol or drugs, a heady mix which can lead to irresponsible behaviour, so the campaign has produced a series of posters for resorts popular with youthful travellers. Nikki White, ABTA’s Director of Destinations and Sustainability, said: “We see too many peo-

ple badly injured or much worse because they’ve tried to climb over, jump or dive from their hotel balcony. A moment of thoughtlessness can have a devastating impact, not just on the holidaymaker themselves, but also on their family and friends. We hope to help holidaymakers use their balconies sensibly and safely, as do millions of hotel guests around the world.” Will Middleton, FCO Consular Director for Southern Eu-

rope, said: “We have already seen a number of very serious injuries caused by balcony falls this summer. We really do urge people to avoid taking risks around balconies, particularly if you have been drinking. A momentary lapse of judgement can lead to a lifetime of consequences.” The phenomenon appears largely restricted to hotels located on islands, although the campaign makes no attempt to explain why this might be.

Community buildings insurance, are you fully covered?

COMMUNITY BUILDINGS: Make sure you find out what is covered. IF your home or property in Spain forms part of a block of houses, apartments or condominiums, it usually includes community buildings insurance. You automatically pay this each month along with other community fees. Generally this cover is limited to keep premiums to a minimum. Cover includes communal elements such as the buildings, the grounds, lifts, pipes, walkways, padel tennis courts, etc. Unlike insurance policies in the UK, community buildings insurance does not cover fixtures and fittings such as your kitchen or bathroom. TAKE OUT YOUR OWN SEPARATE COVER If an upstairs neighbour goes on holiday and leaves the tap on, resulting in a flood in your home below, the community buildings insurance will not cover the damage. Línea Directa recommends that you take out separate cover for your home. This should protect all the contents of your home, its fixtures and fittings and anything else not covered by the community insurance. YOUR HOME IS AN ASSET Remember, your home is an asset. It represents a lifelong

investment and it’s imperative that you get the right insurance from the beginning. Whether it’s your own residence, you rent it out or if you’re planning to sell it, your home may be at risk if it is not fully covered. Damage occurring from flood, fires or break-ins can be expensive to repair and or replace. Paying a small premium now will protect your investment for the future. FIND OUT EXACTLY WHAT YOUR COMMUNITY IS COVERED FOR Most community covers are very basic, so while you are shopping around for the best comprehensive home insurance, you will need gap or first loss cover to ensure you are protected in the meantime. Prior to contracting a new policy, find out exactly what is covered by your community policy. Many people in Spain who live in an apartment discover too late that they are not adequately covered by their urbanisation’s community insurance. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. If you would like to contact Línea Directa please call 902 123 309. CURRENCY TROUBLES: Hoping to attract investment.

Nigeria is to devalue naira AS previously reported, Nigeria, one of Africa’s potentially strongest economies which depends so heavily on oil revenues, has been experiencing significant troubles with obtaining foreign currency. Having blocked credit cards and transfer of funds out of the country, the black market rate between the dollar and naira

has doubled over the last few weeks. Several years ago, a new naira was introduced almost ‘overnight’ which meant a lot of the illegally held, black market and money-laundered currency became worthless. Now the naira is to be devalued in the hope it will attract new foreign investment.

An interesting rule to work A MADRID Court has instructed a company to re-employ a worker who had been fired because he was sent to prison for two years, as it considered this decision was contrary to the former employee’s right of rehabilitation. Not only should the company take him back, the judge declared, it should also pay him a full salary for the period following his release from prison in February when he became available to return to his former job.

A pretty serious business Revlon known worldwide for its hair colour products has announced it wishes to take over Elizabeth Arden to create a giant company.

Well-known US Company Estée Lauder has announced that it will shed 1,200 jobs and just six months ago Revlon’s major shareholder Ron Perelman declared that he wished to see a

By John Smith DESPITE the fact that reports for several months have indicated that there is plenty of money available to consumers around the world to spend on ‘luxuries’ it has become apparent that the cosmetics world is suffering quite considerably with many of the larger companies finding themselves financially stretched with declining sales and the need to reduce staffing levels.

RON PERELMAN: Here with his daughter, is the major shareholder of Revlon.

sale of the brand but has now had a change of heart and wants his company to grow with this takeover. At one time, it seemed that price was no barrier to the sale of cosmetics and a famous

name such as Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift would ensure that perfume would literally fly off the shelf, but times have changed and consumers are becoming much more price conscious and are not so easily swayed by a fa-

mous name, if they can obtain a similar fragrance at a lesser price. Revlon, known worldwide for its hair colour products has announced that it wishes to take over Elizabeth Arden to create a giant company which can offer both hair treatment and anti-aging creams with a huge offer of $14 (€12.4) per share which values the company at $870 million (€773 million) although more than half of that amount will need to be used to pay off debts. Apart from the advantage of being able to offer a much larger range of product, Revlon estimate that by combining manufacturing and distribution networks with the resultant loss of staff, it can generate combined savings of $140 million (€124 million) as well as expand its exposure across the world market. Any decision to proceed will depend upon approval by shareholders as well as regulatory bodies but it is anticipated that this should not cause any particular problem and the two companies should merge before the end of 2016. Both companies have significant histories with Elizabeth Arden opening her first business in 1910, whilst Revlon was founded as a family business in 1932 but if the takeover does happen then forecast annual turnover for the combined brands will be $3 billion (€2.65 billion).

By John Smith SOFTWARE giant Microsoft has announced that it will form a joint venture with a recently founded company in California called Kind Financial which is intended to give accurate reports to businesses and government agencies on the production and sale of legalised marihuana products in its first ever partnership of this type. With 29 States having either decriminalised the use of marihuana completely or for medical purposes and with Native American reservations starting to make marihuana freely available, there is an incredibly large potential market for software which will track legal marihuana movement from ‘seed to sale.’ Kind has the software and Microsoft runs the government Cloud facility so the pair of companies has identified a natural synergy which will no doubt raise significant income for their businesses. Microsoft told the BBC in an emailed statement that it supported “government customers and partners to help them meet their

missions. “Kind Financial is building solutions on our government Cloud to help these agencies regulate and monitor controlled substances and items, and manage compliance with jurisdictional laws and regulations.” With such a large potential market, it may also be in the mind of State and Federal taxation authori-

ties that once a high quality working system is in place that there will be a significant opportunity to raise funds. Kind’s software, which is called Agrisoft Seed to Sale, ‘closes the loop between marihuana-related businesses, regulatory agencies, and financial institutions,’ a press release said.

Apart from the fact that the movement of legal marihuana will be closely monitored, there is the added bonus as far as the authorities are concerned in that it will be extremely difficult for unscrupulous producers or sellers to divert any significant amount of marihuana to the illegal trade. With the drop in sales of tobacco

product, it seems likely that manufacturers will be keeping a very close eye on the development of legalised sale, particularly as it was reported more than 30 years ago that many of them had registered trade names such as ‘Acapulco Gold’ in anticipation of the full legalisation of the plant and its commercial sale to the public at large.

Everything you ever wanted to know about Spanish and English Wills, including Brexit Charlotte is a solicitor in Stone King’s Trusts and Estates Team and is experienced in a broad range of matters including wills, probate, powers of attorney and related tax matters.

Charlotte Macdonald, specialist cross-border solicitor at Stone King LLP, answers common questions about Spanish wills - including Brexit. When I die, can I ensure my Spanish assets go to my loved ones? Yes, by proper planning, including a properly drafted will which is (critically) the product of professional cross-border advice and not advice from a well-meaning friend. Make no mistake, wills are complex ‘contracts’ and we regularly see heartache caused by badly drafted wills that misunderstand, misinterpret and misapply intricate cross-border succession law. I thought Spanish law dictated who inherited my property? Yes, it does. When you die a proportion automatically passes to fixed beneficiaries, unless you take advantage of EU Regulation 650/2012 (Brussels IV). Under the Regulation, British nationals can ‘elect’ ‘British’ law to apply but be warned, an election can sometimes be disastrous. What about Spanish succession tax? You cannot opt out of Spanish succession tax and be careful - there can be adverse indirect tax consequences from making an election – so take qualified advice. Do I need separate wills for Spain and England? This depends on: your family make-up; the nature, value and location of your assets; how the assets are owned and who you would like to receive them. Since the new Regulation there are compelling reasons for having your English and Spanish wills drafted by a single English cross-border specialist who can advise on the succession and taxation of

your worldwide estate. The reasons include: • UK and Spanish probate processes can be administered simultaneously, saving time and money; • Continuity of planning and advice; • UK solicitors are better qualified to advise on UK succession law than Spanish lawyers; • The UK Solicitor’s Regulation Authority, ensures accountability; • UK solicitor’s hold £2m compulsory insurance; • Drafting in a language you understand; • No compatibility or inadvertent revocation issues. Be guided by your cross-border specialist, because sometimes a single worldwide will is best and sometimes (rarely) a ‘foreign’ will drafted by an overseas lawyer is sensible. Does my will need to be drafted by a Spanish lawyer to be valid? No. Spain signed the 1961 Hague Convention on the mutual recognition of wills, meaning English wills are formally valid in Spain. Does my Spanish will need to be registered in Madrid? No, this is another common misconception. Will Brexit affect my will? No. A Brexit will make no difference to who gets what when you die, because the UK opted out of the Regulation, meaning the UK is already treated as a state outside the EU for succession purposes. The only difference a Brexit would make would be that the UK could not, in future, opt in to the Regulation.

For further information contact the author Charlotte Macdonald, or Daniel (Dan) Harris or Simon Lofthouse in the cross-border unit by email international@stoneking.co.uk or by telephone on + 44 (0) 1225 337599.

Great Britain destined for an eruption of chaos and disaster LEAPY LEE SAYS IT

OTHERS THINK IT

IN my opinion the UK is a tinderbox waiting for a flint. I am firmly convinced that some event will occur that will cause the whole, up to now suppressed anger and frustration, to erupt into a conflict that will bring unprecedented, disaster and chaos onto the streets of our once great country. It is of course virtually impossible to predict what will ignite this. It may have already happened with the tragic murder of Jo Cox. It appears her alleged killer was a right-wing fanatic, who disagreed with her views on immigration and so called Islamophobia. Apparently

THE UK: Is a tinderbox waiting for a flint.

she had been exposed to other threats and suspicion of stalkers in recent weeks, so this maniac is most definitely not a one-off. It may be triggered by a close-run vote to stay in the EU. Disgruntled Brexit fanatics could well take to the streets to voice their disapproval. One mad neo-Nazi running amok in a predominantly Muslim area with a Kalashnikov is also, to my mind, an extremely possible scenario that could also spark a confrontation. Bearing in mind that up to now all these types of attacks have been perpetrated by Islamic extremists on the ‘infidels,’ I think this occurrence is probably the most likely of all. Another of Leapy’s ‘dangerous rants,’ I hear the dissenters crying out. Well, be that as it may. I have been accused of ranting on numerous occasions over my 30 years as a colum-

nist and subsequent events have very often silenced the scorners and disbelievers of my alleged scaremongering. Not that I would be in any way presumptuous enough to compare my eloquence or intelligence to that of the great, sadly maligned statesman Enoch Powell, but I do pride myself in having at least one thing in common. I refuse to live with my head stuck firmly in the sand and an aura of misguided optimism floating around my hind quarters. I simply cannot understand why there was such an outcry about the UKIP poster of untold thousands of immigrants crossing European borders. To me a picture paints a thousand words! Keep the faith. Keep fighting the good fight MY wife and I, as owners of a property in La Siesta, are extremely grateful for the interest Euro Weekly News has taken with regards to what has been happening over so many years at Calle Bach and Calle Elgar. John Smith listened to what the problem was, and took action so that Gemma Quinn contacted us and saw for herself the rubbish being dumped in our area, and this resulted in a very welcome front page article. In the past we have seen rats and all kind of vermin, chemicals, oil and general dumping which is very bad for the health of children, people and animals. We believe that the articles in EWN will encourage the town hall to recognise their responsibility and to take action to make this a healthy and attractive place again. Please, EWN, follow the situation until our part of La Siesta becomes a nice place where everybody can walk and children can play. Fred de Jong

Candy man ISN’T nostalgia a wonderful thing? I was reading Colin Bird’s article in EWN’s June 15 newspaper remembering what London Airport used to be like. In 1960 I was in the RAF stationed at Hendon in North London. One of my tasks was to go to London Airport to collect compassionate cases which had flown in from all over the world and transport them to one of London’s main line stations. In those days, London Airport consisted of a few Nissen huts located next to the old A4. One day, whilst I was waiting, Sammy Davis Junior came out of arrivals, saw me in uniform and said “Oh! Have you come to get me?” I said “No but I would love your autograph.” Needless to say, he gave it to me. I wonder if any other readers remember LAP with its few Nissen huts? Peter Simpson, Granada

Street wise I HOPE you don’t mind but I thought I would bring this incident to your readers’ attention. My wife and I were walking on Marina Baixa Avenue in Finestrat when a white saloon four-door car pulled up alongside us with two men dressed in civilian clothing. One of them then showed us his police ID card with his photograph on it and then asked to see our passports. I said I didn’t carry them

Rants and rambles I HAVE been residing in Murcia for almost a year and one of the highlights of my week is to collect my copy of the Euro Weekly on Thursdays and enjoy breakfast reading your excellent coverage of what’s going on locally and internationally. I also enjoy the many and varied contributions from all your columnists barring one. His name appears to be Leapy Lee. His strap line is ‘others think it, Leapy Lee says it,’ but I would be very interested in hearing how many other readers agree with my observations. I could mention other articles that he has written which I find totally abhorrent but will concentrate on last week’s. In his piece he asks why Gordon Brown is telling us what to do on Sky News. This was wholly incorrect as I watched the piece on television and it was a nicely put together piece of history, which was in steep contrast to some of the threatening rhetoric that has been apparent in most ‘leave’ and ‘remain’ lives thus far. Not content with calling our ex-prime minister egotistical and disillusioned, he then turns his vitriol to Eddie Izzard who he describes as a pathetic idiot. What justifies his remarks against Eddie Izzard I have no idea! Is it because he is openly a cross-dresser or is it that he has run 27 marathons in 27 days raising in excess of £1,000,000 (€1,298,289) for charity? I enjoy other contributions in your newspaper because, although controversial, they are presented with intelligence, which, for me, ‘Leapy’ fails to achieve. Malcolm Le Gassick, Murcia

with us and he then asked us what hotel we were staying at, assuming us to be tourists, so he would take us to get our passports from our room to check our ID. I informed them that we lived here and, smelling a rat, asked him, after telling my wife to get a pen and notebook from her bag, could I see his ID again? He said why? So I replied that I would like to make a note of his police number to check all was well. That comment freaked them out and the car took off like an episode of Starsky and Hutch (giving my age away there) not to be seen for dust, however, I did manage to get the registration number. I have reported all this to the police for which they were very appreciative

governing party capable of kicking some doors down I might find some common ground with Ian but we do not have that person or party! The EU ideal of a free market and political harmony was and is a good idea, but sadly it’s a bit like the old saying ‘communism is a great idea, the only problem with it is the communists.’ My point is the EU is no longer the pure ideal it once was, it is now a politically driven entity by career politicians who earn vast sums of money. A certain Labour leader who lost his chance at being the PM was sent to Brussels as a euro commissioner. It was reported that almost €500,000 per year was the remuneration package. Please do not tell me that this level of income does not ‘corrupt’ a politician’s political ideals when carrying out his duties ‘for us,’ his electorate! Robert Caley

Stay neutral HELLO all. I, a Sherwood Ranger, and comrades were presented to our Colonel in Chief the Queen Mother. Now, having quoted that fact and other things that I have done, does not qualify me to try to persuade people to stay or leave the EU, so why do people say for instance, ‘my grandfather shot and ate three elephants before midday’ that they are entitled to cast a slur on others that do the same. Let me decide Mike Senker

In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I LIKE choice, freedom of choice really. But I’m finding it harder and harder to have that freedom. I’ve had to change passwords two or three times lately because someone decided that it wasn’t ‘strong’ enough. It wasn’t for my bank account or anything that I considered needed one of my super-duper secret passwords. The thing is it should be my choice. If someone can hack the CIA, FBI or Sony it doesn’t matter what my password is, if someone really wants to check my air miles they will find a way. I also don’t want to have to go through Facebook to find out about some product I may be interested in. I have a couple of apartments that I rent out for short lets to holidaymakers and I’ve been doing it for 12 years and never had a problem. I’m now being told that they have to be registered. This is no problem as the income has always been declared but some of the other stuff is nuts. We have to have air conditioning or be fined. Why? We advertise and inform there’s no air conditioning so whoever books makes a choice, air con or not.

But there are now laws in place that are so ridiculous they are almost un-policeable. You now have to register every person that stays with the police. It is reckoned there are about 80,000 apartments being rented. That’s a lot of people being registered and a lot of extra work for the police. People have to have a choice. If they want to stay in a hotel in one room that’s up to them. If they want an apartment and to self-cater that should be up to them and if they want to stay in an apartment that doesn’t have air con that’s up to them too. These new rules have been brought in, as far as I understand, because of lobbying by the hotels. So, does every hotel room now have to have air con? Because I know for a fact that they don’t. It seems the whole world now knows what I want and what’s best for me and actually they don’t. I don’t want to have to give my email address, age and sex just to get past the first page of a shopping site and if I do decide to look on Amazon I don’t want them emailing me three or four times to ask if I’m still interested. My choice was not to buy thank you Mr Amazon. I feel like I’m being chased around the shop by a sales person. IT’S MY CHOICE, GO AWAY! I heard some bad news this week. The guy who owned the Odeon chain died. His funeral will be on Monday at 2:10, 4:20 and 8:40.

OPINION & COMMENT

LEGALLY SPEAKING

Flying the flag AS part of the series, we answer some common driving questions and keep you updated on the latest driving and road news kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers.

SAFER SUPPORT: Purpose built flags are permitted. AS the Euro 2016 football competition begins, the N332 team answers one of the most common questions asked about sporting features, “Can I put a flag on my car?” The short answer is yes, so long as it complies with certain rules. Whatever you’re supporting, carrying a flag is something many people consider, but it can lead to fines from traffic police if it doesn’t comply with regulations as they can be dangerous. Artículo 14 of the Reglamento Circulacion deals with the distribution of loads, under the heading ‘Disposición de la carga.’ Although a flag may not be considered to be a ‘load’ because it is an element which is additional to the normal fixtures of the vehicle, then it qualifies as such. For safety reasons, anything carried on a vehicle must not drag fully or partially, fall or move dangerously, interfere with stability, produce noise, dust or other avoidable problems and must not hide lighting, signals,

number plates or anything else which could interfere with manual warnings of drivers. If a flag is large enough, it will produce considerable drag and may interfere with the view of lights, number plates and other fixtures, or it could blow or fall into the path of other road users, and is therefore a risk in so is not allowed. However, smaller purpose built flags are permitted and are often seen attached to vehicle windows, or sometimes as part of the main structure eg as one might see in a Presidential limousine. Similarly, there are other accessories available which can be fitted to a vehicle safely, such as covers for the wing mirrors, so long as the active view of the mirror is not obscured. A flag draped or tied across the bonnet or roof, or any part of the vehicle, would not be permitted, nor would covers to the sun visors, which could interfere with the visibility of the driver.

Did they steal his vote? Last year we bought our first property in Spain but were unable to attend the Community’s AGM. We did not nominate anyone to vote on our behalf. Pantomime politics have no place in this once-in-a-lifetime referendum Nora Johnson

Breaking Views Nora is the author of popular psychological suspense and crime thrillers and a freelance journalist. To comment on any of the issues raised in her column, go to www.euroweeklynews.com/3.0.15/nora-johnson

THE problem now is that whatever the result of the referendum, the public have little faith or confidence in any of the leading political figures or institutions, either in the UK or EU. Those politicians and institutions have repeatedly taken advantage of the public’s trust, and what we see now happening all over Europe is the inevitable result: people want change. They’re not even sure what change. They do know, though, they’re being repeatedly taken in and manipulated by those supposed to represent their interests. But what Britain’s own political leaders are guilty of is this: no clear plan for the referendum’s aftermath, in or out.

PANTOMIME POLITICS: Oh yes he does! Oh, no he doesn’t! If Britain remains, it’ll doubtless be open to fresh attacks on rebates, migrant quotas, budgets, etc. by the EU. Where’s the plan to deal with that? You can’t instantly implement the infrastructure/services to cope with enough migrants to “populate Newcas-

tle every year” (according to Boris). Constructing power plants, road/rail communications, houses, schools and training doctors takes a decade to cover that demand. If Britain leaves, it’ll doubtless be subjected by the EU to ‘let’s give it a

******* good kicking’ to deter other EU countries from demanding referendums. Again, where’s the plan? Boris let his side down with his ‘EU-Hitler’ barb, and Cameron too on the Remain side. Cameron ignored the basic marketing truth that you have to

throw in the negatives about your product for people to believe the positives. Instead, he blindly campaigned as if the EU was the Fairy Godmother and Boris the Wicked Witch. Punch and Judy would have been proud. Oh, yes he does! Oh, no he doesn’t! Such pantomime politics have no place here. Basically, Britain doesn’t have the internationally acclaimed leaders to manage the outcome. It still doesn’t fully trust its own financial institutions, so how can a country prosper with little confidence in its leaders or key institutions? The choice in this referendum is like a vegetarian being asked whether he’d prefer a steak or a pork chop. For that Britain has its own politicians to thank. THE quality of the air we breathe is an important part of everyday life and clean well-maintained air conditioning units not only improve overall health but can also enhance business. The issue of air conditioning contamination is not only a public health concern but also an economic challenge. AcCleaner Baleares, leader in the cleaning and disinfection of air conditioning systems in Spain and Europe, has developed the knowledge and tools to resolve these problems with its innovative system known as ‘Microbiological maintenance’. AcCleaner uses an exclusive technique for the maintenance of AC units that respects the environment and effectively fights against the many diseases and allergies caused by dirty air conditioning units. In the Balearics, 35 per cent of sick leave is due to the bad quality of air in the workplace. A lack of air conditioning maintenance is a main cause of harmful effects to health, in-

ture ageing condition known as hypopituitarism. They hope these results will pave the way for treating the human form of the disease. The pituitary gland helps keep us on an even keel and regulates growth and metabolism, producing hormones which control other glands in the body. People with hypopituitarism have problems with this ‘master gland’ which means their brains are unable to produce or release enough of certain key hormones and this can lead to dwarfism in children and premature ageing in adults.

THE Global Nutrition Report for 2016 has reported that every country is facing a ‘serious public health challenge’ from malnutrition. The study of 129 countries found one in three people suffer from malnutrition in some form. Malnutrition can take various forms from child stunting and wasting due to starvation or from being overweight and if a person is lacking in nutrients like iron, folic acid and vitamins, they are classed as malnourished. While malnourishment is usually associated with people not eating enough, hundreds of millions of people are now classed as malnourished because they’re overweight with too much sugar, salt or cholesterol in their blood. The authors of the report said while progress is being made in terms of children starving they are now looking at the opposite end of the scale with soaring obesity levels. The chart showed that out of 667 million children under five worldwide, 41 million are now overweight.

SPECIALIST: Doctor Luis Perez Belmonte. This week a concerned husband has written to ask the doctor about his wife’s memory loss: DEAR doctor, For a few months now I’ve been worried about my wife. She seems to have become very forgetful and, although I know as we age our memories can suffer a bit, I think this could be something more serious. She’s 70 years old and in good physical health, but she has been forgetting things a lot recently. She doesn’t remember to go to her hairdresser’s after booking appointments, she loses things or puts them away in the wrong place then says I’ve hidden them, she forgets words when we’re talking and the other day she even got lost on the way to see our daughter, a trip she has made hundreds of times. When I try and suggest she sees a doctor to discuss these things she gets angry and says it’s just because she’s getting older but I’m not sure. What do you think? Will this get worse over time, or is there anything we can do to stop that happening? Should I force her to see a doctor even if she gets cross with me?

The doctor replied: Cognitive impairment is quite a common health problem as people get older. Occasional forgetfulness, memory loss and confusion which don’t affect basic daily activities don’t tend to point to anything more significant. In your wife’s case these incidents seem to be moderate as they are beginning to affect her normal life and they might gradually worsen over the next few years. In my opinion, she should be seen for evaluation by a specialist, who should order tests including a scan and blood tests and will probably prescribe a treatment to include medicine and therapy to improve memory and other cognitive functions. In many cases, the impairment is due to causes which are reversible with correct treatment, and if this is not the case and it is caused by a degenerative condition such as Alzheimer’s, treatment will still slow the process down. The only way to tell and treat the problem is to see a specialist for correct diagnosis through tests.

Cassandra Nash A weekly look - and not entirely impartial reaction to the Spanish political scene

THIS time round Mariano Rajoy took part in the televised debate between the presidential candidates. Rajoy didn’t stray once from his line that his government has created employment and only he has the know-how to steer the country on a steady course. Four years in government after losing the two previous elections undeniably adds up to experience. But despite his immovable faith in himself Rajoy looked elderly and vaguely beaten beside the three young lions who will settle their differences before allowing him another four years in power.

MARIANO RAJOY: Participated in the televised debate.

THE Unidos-Podemos voting alliance sell themselves as social democrats even though the Unidos side of the marriage is Spain’s former communist party. But what’s in a name? The label hardly matters if punters buy the product and as the latest polls show, notwithstanding Iglesias’ personal unpopularity, that’s what they will probably do.

Newspeak WITH the exception of the scrupulously politically correct, the Spanish are tiring of campaigning politicians’ insistence on using the individual niños y niñas instead of a collective niños when referring to children or trabajadores y trabajadoras for workers. Rigorous respect for equality legislation should never be ridiculed in a society

where women endured centuries of discrimination. But the modification is a boon for politicians who never make do with one word where they can use two.

All isn’t forgiven THE Telecino programme ‘Quiero gobernar’ gave young children the chance to talk to Mariano Rajoy. Even the tots wanted to hear his excuses about his party’s links to the country’s biggest corruption cases, to which Rajoy truthfully answered, “Nobody’s perfect.” It’s unfortunate that even for the Spanish, especially those of a certain age, the phrase is indelibly, inextricably linked to the closing line of ‘Some like it hot’ when Jack Lemmon admits to Osgood Fielding III that he isn’t a blonde bombshell. Voters everywhere naively want the politicians they put in power to be perfect. A party inextricably and indelibly linked to corruption can’t expect admitting its faults to lead automatically to forgiveness, let alone a partnership.

Summer fiestas in the Balearic capital are now under way By Sandra Galo THIS summer the city of Palma will celebrate its first Summer Festival from June 20 to July 8. The unique programme which is costing the City Council around €85,000 will include music, poetry, theatre, dance and sport. One of the goals initially proposed by the council was to copy the vast majority of municipalities on the island and offer a ‘verbena’ (open-air dance) concert for young people. The city has instead opted to promote the annual Bar Flexas party in the Parc de la Mar. Eva Frade, councillor for Citizen Participation, explained that the decision was made so as not to compete with other festivities already planned in the city. According to the councillor responsible for the fiestas, the city has chosen to support verbenas which are organised by neighbourhood associations. The ‘revetlla’ of Sant Joan organised

for the more adventurous like a Tibetan bridge and a climbing wall. There will also be games adapted for people with disabilities. The third edition of the Trescabarris treasure hunt will take place in Pere Garau. Twelve playful tests will test participants’ wit and let them get to know the Llevant area. The activity runs from 6.30pm to 10pm. From June 27 to 30, the cultural activity Passejart will combine short theatre and dance shows of 10 minutes in length for passers-by in the Ses Fonts Park. On July 2 in the Sa Riera Park, ‘Palmatalent’ will be celebrated with a Karaoke contest and Playback show at 10pm. The following day a poetry slam will be held in the Terreno neighbourhood at 7.30pm. The final event to wrap up the festivities is the Bar Flexis verbena summer party which will be held on July 8 at the Parc de la Mar from 8pm until the early morning hours.

OCIAL Row row your boat THE 24th edition of the Sa Dragonera Canoe Tour will take place on July 3 with around 500 canoeists making the journey between Sant Elm and the island of Sa Dragonera. The event will start at the beach of Sant Elm at 9am. Since it is not competitive, participants will be given 20 minutes from the time the starting horn sounds to enter the water. After the 20 minutes are up, no one else may join in. This year, paddle surf is also included in the event for the first time. The event is organised by the non-profit group Voltors OJE with the collaboration of the Andratx Town Hall as well as private companies. The black and white photos and slides have been transformed into collages, paintings and drawings. The works show individuals close to the artist as well as unknown people. The novel which coined the phrase ‘Big Brother is watching you’ depicts life under a totalitarian State where everything is regulated. The exhibition will be on display until July 17. Votes, cast on facts or feelings? Vicki McLeod

Family Matters THIS is the obligatory EU Referendum column: I’ve been sitting, staring at my computer screen, reading the news and my social media feeds goggle-eyed and slack mouthed at the unbridled racism and discrimination which seems to be flowing out of so many people at the moment. Did you vote? I have done so via proxy. I have voted IN, not just for the future of my British immigrant family now living permanently in Mallorca, but for the rest of Britain to stay in the EU because based on facts and figures available to me I think the country is better off in than out. It’s been quite a ride so far, I’ve certainly learnt more about the passionate beliefs of some of my Facebook friends than I had previously known about. Some of their beliefs are to me short sighted and to some extent about racism and ignorance rather than their views being based

REFERENDUM VOTE: The day is upon us and the result will soon be known. on facts they are based on feelings. In fact, I wonder how many of us have made our decision after reading and learning about the facts rather than just some inflammatory newspaper article or Facebook post? It seems since the murder of MP Jo Cox last week that there has been a

turn in the opinion polls and now the REMAIN and LEAVE camps are neck and neck. It’s appalling to me that it has taken the death of one of Britain’s most dynamic young politicians to start to bring everyone to their senses. It’s like Britain is staging its own Hunger Games. Who’s

could be next? I’m hoping for that Boris bloke. Apparently if Britain vote LEAVE and it all goes wrong he will apologise, because it will of course make it all better. There there Britain, don’t take it to heart, you’re out in the cold, no longer in Europe and now you need a

visa to go anywhere. Yesterday I wrote this on my Facebook status, “Diligently unfollowing all of the people I know on FB sharing immigrant based Leave posts who also happen to be immigrants themselves.” The response was quite strong: 144 likes, and 24 different comment threads later I was quite glad to see so many of my friends agreeing with me, however, I guess there’s always the chance that the OUT voters had already unfollowed me on FB and didn’t ever see the post! Living in Spain makes us immigrants, not expats. We are the same as the people who move to the UK to make a better life for themselves. I personally don’t understand why that is so hard for some people to understand and empathise with. We’ve got a lot of responsibility on our shoulders to make the right decision in this referendum, are you qualified to make a decision? If you are voting today then make sure you do it with the full understanding of what you are doing. mallorcamatters.com.

BOOMING MARKET: Making it difficult for young people to save to buy property.

Vicious cycle of housing By Matthew Elliott DESPITE the UK’s housing market finally showing signs of slowing down and even the prospect of lower prices, welcomed by aspirant young homeowners, the rental market continues to balloon, with many workers forking out substantial percentages of their wages on rent alone. Across the country the average price of a new tenancy on a one-bedroom home is

now â‚Ź940 per month which would take up on average 48 per cent of a young workers salary. In London the figures are even more dramatic with people spending an average of 58 per cent of their wages on having a roof over their heads. The development has impacted society as a whole, with many now moving into flat-shares and the proportion of single people living alone declining significantly. Particularly affected are tenants whose

leases are up for renewal, who are facing steep annual increases of 5.7 per cent. The unfortunate news for those trying to save up to buy a home is that rents are expected to increase faster than house prices throughout the next five years. Astronomically high house prices and tough tests for mortgage eligibility have meant that many people who would be typically taking their first steps on to the property ladder are instead being forced to rent and contribute to the escalating costs.

Stress free holiday rentals, part two John Graham The property expert

FOR EWN readers on the Costas and Mallorca planning to rent out their property this summer, here is part two of my Top 12 Tips on preparing your property for holiday rentals, you may want to keep this article and use it as a check list. • You should have an information pack on your property: Holiday renters need to be made aware of your community rules and a copy should be in the property’s information pack. Common problems are towels on balconies, loud music, late night noisy parties, improper use of the pool, etc., if not you could have serious problems with the community. The pack should have instructions on how to use all your appliances, security alarm and

PREPARE PROPERTY: Making sure everything is in tip top condition for renters. mandos, etc. and emergency telephone numbers for you or the agent, doctor, chemist, hospital, 24/7 repairs, etc. • Set the rules: When advertising your property, inform holiday renters on the maximum number of persons that can occupy your property and if pets or smoking is allowed in the property.

• Charge the right rental prices: You will need to decide what you will charge for rental prices per week throughout the summer so if you are handling the bookings and advertising yourself go online and check what other similar properties are charging. If you are using an agent, ask your agent to give

you an idea of rental rates that you can charge and still be competitive. Don’t forget rental income is not all profit, you need to cover the cost of an agents fee, or your advertising costs, maintenance, cleaning, laundry, tax, insurance, and other costs in your rental prices.

• Prepare your property for hassle free summer rentals: Remember to have your property in top condition because your property has to stand up to constant rental wear and tear throughout the summer so you must check that all your appliances and plumbing are in excellent working order. The best thing to do is have all your appliances serviced before you start renting your property: air conditioning systems and filters, power supply, kitchen appliances, gas supply or gas bottles, automatic gates, garage doors, pool equipment, fuse boxes and TV channels. Health and safety rules will apply and you will need to check smoke detectors and fire alarms are in good working order. Hire a plumber to check toilets, baths, showers and the kitchen sink and boiler are all in working order and the water pressure is correct. If you have a private pool check pumps are in working condition.

• Avoid late payment of utility bills: Make sure all your utility bills such as water, gas, electricity, community fees, etc. are paid on time throughout the summer, by standing order is best but still double check the bank has made the payments when due. You would be surprised how many properties have water, gas or electricity cut off because the bank didn’t pay on time. • Take the risk out of holiday rentals: Make sure that you take out a special property insurance which covers you for holiday rentals, it’s well worth it and gives you peace of mind. Common problems and claims are bath overflows damaging apartments on lower floors and damage to community property. John Graham is a Fellow of The Architecture & Surveyors Institute. OPINION & COMMENT

Referendum decision day To suggest we will be unable to hold our own and thrive is insulting.

Colin Bird A weekly look Each week, Colin brings his slightly off-thewall view of the world to the pages of EWN in his own irreverent style.

AS this week’s EWN hits the streets, the British people are voting on their long term future. This time tomorrow, we will either still be a member of the EU or an independent sovereign country, making its own way in the world. All the arguments have been exhausted, with very few hard facts emerging from the debate. Scaremongering, personal insults and self interest have dominated the media in recent weeks, with very little attention being paid to the most important issue that this referendum throws up, whether we wish to remain a country ruled by an elite club of appointed overseers or claim back our independence and ability to make our own decisions. I fail to understand why

IN OR OUT?: British people are voting on their long term future. anyone who purports to be a lover of democracy could ever contemplate voting to stay in an organisation where new laws, directives, rules and regulations are drafted by an unelected, and

therefore unaccountable Commission. Economics, economics and economics has been the battle cry of the ‘in’ brigade. Of course the economy of our country is vitally impor-

tant, but to suggest that we will be unable to not only hold our own, but to thrive in a world where we are free to negotiate our own trade agreements is insulting nonsense.

In my view, the reason that there has been so much desperation on the part of the EU to bring us to heel, is because the vested political and economic interests of this undemocratic club realise just how influential our decision today will be, and that an ‘out’ vote could very well mark the end of the EU as we know it and the derailment of the aptly named, gravy train. It is an irony that in the event of a British exit, the EU will have to make sweeping and fundamental changes to the way it does business, in order to survive. Changes that we have been unable to help bring about in 43 years of membership. This is not a ‘Little Englander’ mentality, but a vote to leave ‘Authoritarian Europe.’

I hope that Jo Cox’s killer is mad and not just evil Credit Garry Knight flickr

John Smith Random thoughts... IT’S one thing to throw an egg at John Prescott, it’s another to be so blinded by hatred to shoot and stab your local MP as happened on June 16 to mother of two Jo Cox in her constituency of Batley and Spen in West Yorkshire. I hope that the alleged killer, identified as 52-year-old local man Thomas Mair is diagnosed as a lunatic, because if he isn’t and he did commit this outrageous murder then it doesn’t say a great deal for humanity if he is classed as ‘normal’ or simply ‘evil’. Personally, I’ve never been in favour of the death penalty, Too many people have been cleared of murder, years after the event (and can’t be resurrected), and to some extent it brings society down to the same level as the killer. Having said that however, what’s the point of keeping him imprisoned for the

TOUCHING MEMORIAL: To murdered MP Jo Cox, rest in peace.

rest of his life when there’s little chance of him being released back into society as a useful and welcome member? It’s difficult to know what to think but one thing for sure is that despite the waste of this relatively young woman’s

life, some good must emerge. There’s always an outpouring of sympathy when a tragedy like this occurs but are they just crocodile tears with little good coming out of the bad, hopefully not. This is the first murder of an MP

The European Parliament.

And they think it’s all over BY the time that this edition of Euro Weekly News is published, the die will have been cast in the Brexit referendum and the Spanish General Election will be on its way to being completed. These are perhaps two of the most important ballots to affect expatriates in Spain and to some extent the result of one could well affect the result of the other. Now that we can’t be accused of trying to act as scaremongers or even influence anyone, we at Euro Weekly News hope most sincerely that the vote is in favour of remaining within the European Union. Some very intelligent and committed people want to see Britain leave the EU but their passion, whilst genuine and impressive, simply cannot hide the fact that no-one has any idea what the result would be in the event of an exit. Perhaps it will be the saviour of Britain as some predict or maybe it will be a disaster which will cost us all dear. One way of making money quickly is to take everything you own to a casino and placing it all on black or red and within a matter of just seconds, chance will either see you distraught and bankrupt or delighted and rolling in money depending on a single roll of the ball. Garden handover guide Dick Handscombe

Gardening Corner By Spain’s best known expatriate gardening author living in Spain for 25 years.

A CHANGE of gardeners often results in a lack of continuity in the development and maintenance of a carefully nurtured garden. To avoid this try to ensure the outgoing and incoming gardeners meet on site in your garden for a handover. The following check list is useful for an effective changeover. 1. The extent to which the owner likes to be involved or whether they leave the gardener to do what they think is best. 2. The most important owners likes and dislikes in respect of the garden. 3. The current agreed programme for development/improvement eg new terraces, flower beds, rockeries etc. 4. Any urgent jobs planned

Hide from the sun with an awning AT this time of year the sun and light can be a little too strong and can turn your home into an oven and damage furniture. The best way to hide from the worst of the rays is with an awning, and there are all sorts of options out there to choose from. First, if you live in a residential complex or apartment block you need to check with the community of owners, as generally there will be just one approved colour and pattern. Next, decide on the type of awning depending on your needs and where you intend to install it. There are hood-type awnings for small windows, roll-up sheets for balconies and larger, folding types for terraces and large windows. It’s best to have a qualified installer measure and fit your awning. Once it’s in place always try to close your awnings when it rains or is very windy to avoid damage, but never fold or roll them up while wet unless you want damp stains and mold.

GARDEN MAINTENANCE: Is there a regular handy man as well as a gardener? for the next few months. 5. Recently planted plants and their needs until established. 6. Provisional planting plans for the next autumn/winter including cuttings required for propagation.

7. The regular programme of watering and feeding plants, trees and lawns. 8. The normal schedule of weeding, hoeing and weedkilling (if allowed), areas normally killed and with what. 9. The normal frequency and

height for cutting the lawn. 10. The range of machinery (mower, strimmer, shredder, etc) and tools available and servicing arrangements. 11. How the watering system works and the normal seasonal settings. Who to contact if there are problems with the controls on a complex system. The owner’s attitude to cost of watering. 12. The normal programme for the winter clean up in January/February. 13. Facilities for disposal of garden waste eg compost heap, etc. 14. The owner’s policy re: organic/ecological versus inorganic manufactured fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides. 15. Programme for pruning, watering and feeding fruit trees. 16. If there are any vegetables planted that the gardener will be expected to look after. 17. Location and types of spring and summer bulbs to en-

sure they are not disturbed or damaged. 18. Owner’s desire, fancy, for displays of annuals in containers or beds. 19. Owner’s budget for new plants and agreed re: plantings. 20. Ownership of hedges and owners policy re: height and depth of hedges. 21. Owner’s pet plants and names. 22. Areas of terraces and paths regarded as gardener’s territory for sweeping up.

23. Is the garden eco or are chemicals still permitted? 24. Where tools and chemicals can be stored securely. 25. Who’s responsible for repair of steps, paths, terraces, walls, repainting of terrace walls, garden furniture, etc. Is there a regular handy man as well as a gardener? Best of luck if you are involved. © Dick Handscombe June 2016.

They’ve lived in the UK, Sweden, Switzerland with Jack travelling with them and now they’re set to stay in Spain for a couple of years. While moving with the family doesn’t seem to bother Jack, he has become increasingly nervous about loud noises. Settling him into a new home and new neighbourhood takes a little while. Each time he finds a safe place where he decamps when noises get a little loud. Now they live in the campo he seems happier, but still keeps a safe place just in case.

Nicola and Ray prefer for him to be cared for at home when they travel and insist the sitter joins them for a day or two before they leave so that Jack can meet them and relax into their company. TRAINING of dogs does not give the end product. A dog’s natural instinct plays a vital role. Man first domesticated the dog because he had so many useful instincts. When we think that man has used the dog for many thousands of years for his own benefit, it’s very difficult to understand why so few people can differentiate between instinct and intelligence. Instinct is an urge from within which makes a dog act in a certain way and has no connection with intelligence. A dog’s first instinct is to survive. When born a pup squirms about until it finds a teat and then sucks, no intelligence or learning by association plays a part in this process. Maternal instinct tells

BASIC INSTINCT: Dogs, like humans, are born with natural instincts that are not taught. the female to clean up the foetal membrane, etc. and stir the puppy into action by licking it. This is not taught, she hasn’t seen another female do this. Most instincts provide pleasure and because it associates the action with pleasure the instinct grows stronger with usage. In my opinion instinct is either there or it’s not and it can be strengthened, weakened, or diverted. It might lie dormant but once developed it can never be weakened again.

A dog’s obsession for chasing balls can be controlled by training and providing other energy outlets in the same way. If a young dog is diverted the first time he chases a car he may give up the idea, but if allowed to chase cars the hunting instinct becomes stronger and it will be very difficult, even impossible to cure the habit. Instinct covers survival, maternal, hunting, guarding, pack, and self-preservation. Self-preservation makes

dogs furtive and afraid of the unfamiliar. In my opinion, nervousness in dogs is one of the common causes of problems in dogs today. Nearly all cases where children have been attacked by dogs and owners bitten by their own dog arise from nervousness, it’s afraid it’s going to be hurt and attacks first. The self-preservation instinct has been weakened by simply breeding from bold dogs rather than nervous ones but has never been entirely removed.

Budgies make great buddies By Matt Ford THOSE looking to keep birds could do far worse than checking out budgies, arguably the world’s most domesticated bird and well-suited to the Spanish heat, being native to Australia. It’s easy to think that caged birds don’t have enough space, and sometimes this may be the case but remember that

by nature small birds do tend to like enclosed spaces to call home. Provided they have regular, ideally daily, flying time outside the cage, a relatively confined space actually makes budgies feel secure, but also do well in larger cages and outdoor aviaries. Either way, the cage should have some horizontal bars in it to allow climbing, meaning

many round designs are unsuitable, while bars should be no wider than 12mm apart to prevent escape. Toys, swings, ladders, seed sticks and mineral supplements, such as cuttlefish, will all help to keep your bird busy and alleviate boredom, while covering the cage with a cloth at night will encourage your budgie to settle down to sleep. You should provide a bath

for your bird, either fixed to the outside of the cage or a shallow bowl placed inside the cage, although some may prefer to be sprayed with tepid water instead. A good-quality budgerigar or parakeet mix makes a good basic diet. Small pieces of fresh fruit and vegetables may also be given as treats, and fresh drinking water should always be available.

Another mugging takes place in Rio FEARS are rising regarding the safety and security of athletes and tourists in Rio ahead of the Olympic Games. An Australian Paralympic sailor and team official were held at gunpoint and then robbed whilst training in Rio de Janeiro on June 19. This comes just one month after three members of the Spanish Sailing Team were robbed at gunpoint in a popular tourist area. In a statement, Australian Sailing said Paralympic sailor Liesl Tesch and physiotherapist Sarah Ross were

riding their bikes, in a park, near their hotel on Sunday morning. They were confronted by two men. One of the men was carrying a pistol, and both women were threatened. Their bikes were the only thing stolen and both women were unharmed though shaken. The incident was reported to the local tourist police who will continue to investigate. Australian Sailing is providing support to both team members to ensure their well-being.

Fourteen children drowned in Russia Vitaly Titov Shutterstock

By John Smith WHILST hundreds of thousands of people enjoy ‘messing about in boats,’ it is heartbreaking to have to report about a disaster in Russia where at least 14 children died after boats on which they were travelling capsized due to storms. Five employees of the Park Hotel Syamozero summer camp have been arrested and are likely to be charged with sending 47 children and four young instructors on this trip in very poor weather. Reports suggest that the children had tried to help each other during the tragedy and a number of the bodies which were found were holding hands whilst others in this unlikely chain were actually still alive and were rescued by local residents. To make matters worse, some of those who survived had to spend the night on an island in the lake but as they had been immersed in freezing water and the weather was extremely cold, at least five were suffering from hypothermia when eventually discovered. Some reports suggest that this particular camp had a history of problems going back

RUSSIAN DISASTER: Boats capsized in Lake Syamozero Karelia. several years, but this will come as no consolation to grieving parents who thought that their children were being cared for safely. One thing that has come out of this catastrophe is the absolute need for all involved with children and boating to ensure that

equipment is properly checked, those involved in managing such an expedition are highly trained and are able to deal with emergencies, boats themselves are in good condition and if weather reports are bad, then serious consideration should be given to cancelling the event.

A mid-life makeover By Matt Ford THE Maserati Quattroporte sports limousine has been given a facelift for 2016 which is now on sale, featuring an updated exterior, new features to boost efficiency, and the latest in-car technology. Outside, the new car boasts subtly restyled bumpers, a new angular front grille with vertical chrome slats, and a matte black body trim, offering a more refined look. A new infotainment system comprising an 8.4 inch touchscreen controlled by a rotary knob mounted on the centre console means less buttons on the dashboard, meaning the cabin is cleaner and less cluttered. Maserati say that the new

variant is both more potent and fuel efficient compared with the outgoing model, with a choice of turbocharged diesel and petrol V6s or a turbocharged petrol V8 offering improved straight-line performance. Aerodynamic efficiency is 10 per cent better, thanks to a new electric air shutter which opens and closes parts of the front grille, plus a power upgrade for the base 3.0-litre petrol V6, which now provides 345bhp and an improved 062mph time of 5.5 seconds. scale, the 3.8-litre V8 produces the same 523bhp as the previous model, but the improved aerodynamics mean its top speed is now 193mph. Other new features include adaptive cruise control, lane

departure and collision warning systems with brake assist, and an automated emergency brake, plus a new surround camera that can be ordered as an option.

An entry level diesel spec will set you back around €89,000, whereas if you have some spare change lying around, the range-topping V8 GranSport GTS starts at a whopping €147,000.

MERCEDES G550: Eagerly awaited. DEBUTING as a pre-production model at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, the Mercedes G550 4x4 has been quietly developing behind the scenes and looks set for release early next year. Combining the power and velocity of the notorious G63 6x6 with a normal G-Class exterior, the G550 will be one of the most eagerly awaited SUVs of the decade. A twin-turbocharged 4.0 litre engine rated at 416 hp and boasting 450lb·ft torque is combined with a seven-speed automatic transmission and terrain

busting suspension, featuring damper struts and dual strings. Though designed for adventurers looking to take on challenging terrain and enjoy rampaging across deserts, mountains and dusty beaches, the G550 possesses an extremely luxurious interior. An eight-inch-display screen is the stand out feature in an upgraded infotainment system, specially designed for smooth smartphone integration. Prices are yet to be revealed but industry insiders expect the G550 to command between €130,000 and €170,000.

Now you can see it FOLLOWING Landrover’s see-through bonnet in 2014, the company has now produced a system called Transparent Trailer, an aid for drivers to see behind trailers, horseboxes and suchlike. While the bonnet tech used cameras mounted in the grille of the Discovery Vision Concept to project an image of the road surface onto the windscreen, the new kit combines video footage from the existing surround-view apparatus, which comprises cameras located on the wing mirrors and back of the car, with that shot by a third unit attached to the towed vehicle. The resulting hybrid image is then projected onto an electronic rear-view mirror, aiding drivers when reversing or overtaking. Transparent Trailer will probably be offered as an aftermarket item within a couple of years.

Mini unveils concept for the future AS humanity continues to head on its way towards a robotically-controlled future, Mini has unveiled its own vision of what lies ahead, in the form of the Mini concept Vision 100. Created for the BMW Group’s centenary, Chief Designer Anders Warming says: “Today we connect emotionally to a Mini. In the future we’ll connect to it digitally.” Mini say that in a future where cars are commonly shared in overcrowded cities, every Mini will become your Mini, with their theory that if the vehicle feels like your own every time you get into it, then brand loyalty should increase.
