One of the few positives to come out of these dark times is that regional, political and individual differences have been put to one side as the nation and its people unite and pull together for the common good.

gether, but are willing to put celebrations aside and enjoy the time in the best way possible, safe in the knowledge that we are doing it for the benefit of good health and for the safety of our friends and

There is no pre-established rulebook on the best way to defeat Covid-19, and the Euro Weekly News wants to thank the President of the Spanish government Señor Pedro Sanchez for

everything he and his administration are doing to keep up us all safe.

We appreciate that his priority is public health and taking the right steps to enable Spain to tackle this emergency situation and move forward again as soon as possible.

EWN also wants to thank each and every person in Spain for playing their own vital role in this completely changed society.

By staying indoors and respecting the lockdown restrictions

we are all helping to stop the virus from spreading, to keep ourselves and others well, and to make the return to normality something we can all see on a near horizon.

As Pedro Sanchez said, this is now a world where “our strength comes from counting on each other.”

It is the time to come together and to express our deepest gratitude to everyone trying to do their bit to defeat the invisible enemy. #QUEDATEENCASA

DIGITAL EASTER DIFFERENT: Spaniards cannot get out onto the streets to celebrate Easter the way they want to, but they can celebrate it online.

WITH everything going on in the coronavirus-ravaged world at present, Easter has got somewhat pushed to one side this year.

All the normal excitement about the spectacular ‘Semana Santa’ processions through the streets of towns and cities across Spain is absent because they cannot happen, and there are no hordes of beach-hungry city dwellers heading for the coast for the long weekend.

But the State of Alarm enforced confinement does not mean Spain is not celebrating Easter at all. It’s just that this year it is different: it is more of a digital version.

In many areas there are various initiatives to bring people together online at this important time of year.

Local TV stations are broadcasting processions from previous years at the times this year’s events had been scheduled to take place.

And in many areas the religious services are being streamed live, albeit services held behind churches’ and cathedrals’ locked doors.

Coronavirus has stopped Spain from going out onto the street to celebrate Easter the way it does so spectacularly and uniquely. But the crisis has not done away with the spirit of Easter.

Sole service ON Sunday Pope Francis was the sole celebrant at Palm Sunday Mass in St Peter’s Basilica at the commencement of Holy Week, and the service took place without a congregation, which the Vatican press office said was a historical first for the Roman Catholic Church.

The mass and Pope Francis was live streamed from the near-empty basilica.

Only the Pope’s aides and a handful of invited religious guests were present. The invitees sat in the front pews of St Peter'’ keeping a safe distance apart.

The male choir and organist also practised social distancing.

In his homily, the Pope asked worshipers to devote themselves to service in this time of Covid-19.

“May we reach out to those who are suffering and those most in need. May we not be concerned about what we lack, but what good we can do for others,” said the Pope.

RELIGIOUS CELEBRATIONS ALTHOUGH people in Spain will not be able to celebrate Semana Santa in their traditional manner, this is not to say they will lose their Easter spirit!

Some neighbourhoods have resorted to their most social gatherings – balconies. This year religious

thrones and processions have had to be injected with a little originality and creativity. A group of flats in Cordoba played the traditional procession music as they paraded a makeshift throne across the flats over a washing-up line. Residents will have to conform to watching old processions on

their TV and take part in the broadcasted mass from the comfort of their homes.

Other devout Spaniards have shown their support by hanging tapestries from their balconies. These banners depict religious imagery of the saints and virgins who will not be paraded on the streets this Easter.

The Masked Monarch Highway birth KING FELIPE VI visited an operational centre in the Madrid area that is coordinating the work of Spain’s armed forces during the State of Alarm.

The monarch went to the Retamares base in Pozuelo de Alarcón, and he donned army clothing in addition to wearing a protective mask and gloves.

The Armed Forces have named Operation Balmis as their deployment to various parts of Spain to reinforce the home confinement rules.

Francisco Javier de Balmis y Berenguer was a military doctor born in Alicante in 1753, who then studied medicine locally.

He was famous for bringing the smallpox vaccine to the Spanish empire at the start of the 19th century, and is credited in some quarters as saving millions of lives.

Digital dog show LOCAL charity Last Chance animal Rescue have come up with a novel idea to raise much-needed funds.

Even during the lockdown, they have had no choice but to take on some desperate cases, and without being able to get adopted dogs and pups to their owners, the purse is empty.

The dogs in their care still need feeding and medical attention, one has cancer and limited time and they want to make his last days or weeks as comfortable as possible.

ON April 2, two Guardia Civil officers from Lugo assisted a woman who had gone into labour when she was travelling with her husband on the AG-64 close to Xermade.

At around 7.30pm, the Guardia Civil observed the presence of a car parked on the side of the road and stopped to check if everything was okay and enquire about their parking.

When the officers approached the vehicle, the partner of the woman was ‘visibly nervous’ and explained that his wife was inside the vehicle about to give birth.

When informed, the officers immediately went over to help the mother who at this moment already had the baby in her arms.

An ambulance arrived at the scene and immediately took care of the mother as they transported her to a medical centre.

The officers escorted both the ambulance and the father’s vehicle as they went towards the hospital.

The Guardia Civil has informed that the mother and daughter were taken to the Arquictecto Marquide de Ferrol Hospital in A Coruña and are both in good health.

The Guardia Civil wanted to give thanks to the little Lara for ‘the smile’ which she provoked on the faces of public service officers, medical staff and more during these tough days.

Renfe trains Readjust THE Ministry of Transport has readjusted transport schedules for close-proximity Renfe trains. The C-1 Line, from Malaga to Fuengirola, now has 54 daily trains, 27 from each direction. The first train departs from Centro Alameda at 6.30am and the last train departs at 9.10pm. From the opposite direction, beginning at Fuengirola, the first train will leave at 7.20am, whilst the last train will depart at 10.00pm.

The C-2 Line, Malaga-Alora, has also been readjusted with hourly trains leaving from Alameda from 8.00am till 7.40pm, and trains leaving Alora on every hour from 8.53am till 8.52pm.

FANTASTIC news for Spain’s Malaga Province as for the first time since the Coronavirus pandemic began, there are more cured than infected The confinement of thousands of residents is finally beginning to pay off. For the first time in the province of Malaga, there are more people cured in one day than infected.

Furthermore, there has only been one new admission to the ICU. At the time of going to

print the total affected amounts to 1932, which is only 16 more than on Monday and the number of cured patients increased by 31, going from 258 to 289. This data shows that while the newly infected cases grow by a low 0.83 per cent, the cured people do so by a greater 12.01 per cent.

The rate of new infections indicates that the pandemic is slowing down.

Taking into account that the collapse of the

Intensive Care Units has been one of the biggest worries throughout this health crisis, this figure gives a breath of fresh air to hospitals, health workers and the population.

Regarding this Monday, when 280 new cases were recorded, it represents a reduction of almost 100. Since Saturday, when 495 affected were registered, this Tuesday is the fourth consecutive day of decrease in the rate of infections.

ON Thursday, in an attempt to help with the shortages of medical protective materials, Helicopteros Sanitarios have donated 100 protective suits to their colleagues in the Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital Costa del Sol in Marbella.

Helicopteros Sanitarios wanted to express how truly grateful they are for the great work they are doing, day and night, with the patients affected by Covid-19 and wanted to show their full support.

SHOULD any of our readers need to renew their medical prescriptions but are worried they cannot attend their health centre there is a number, valid for all of Andalucia, where they can arrange this from home.

All you need to do is call the Salud Responde phone number: 955 545 060 and state that the reason for your call is ‘receta.’ Your GP will upload the renewed prescription to your medical card in the course of the day, so you’ll be able to pick it up from your local farmacia. This service is also available through the Salud Responde App.

EURO WEEKLY NEWS is keeping our readers updated with the fundraising for food initiative #ALLFORONE ANDONEFORALL where Kara Jaye Caradas along with her family and friends are delivering food to the elderly and less fortunate on the coast.

Kara, her sister Penny and friend Pippa were at Iceland Fuengirola on Monday collecting food donations and Iceland has kindly allowed them to leave a trolley in each store with a sign on it for customers to drop food donations into.

Since the collection, the group received calls to cover over 200 packages, this is a huge amount and a lot of work for the girls.

There will now be two volunteers, friends Lynn and Shauna from The Playwright Marbella, to help with admin to allow Kara to continue shopping and delivering. Unfortunately, with free goods donated there is always the possibility of some people taking advantage of the kindness.

Due to some people requesting more than their fair share, maybe not being as in need as they claim to be or even instances of people using other people’s children to claim bigger packages there will have to be some kind of monitoring.

Anybody claiming to have children will have to show their passport and birth certificate of the children to make sure that the team are helping those most in need.

Baby now Recovering FAMILY AND FRIENDS: The ladies selflessly put all of their time into this project.

A FOUR-MONTH-OLD baby admitted to the Materno Infantil Hospital in Malaga with coronavirus on March 16, was extubated on April 2.

The chief of the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Hospital, Jose Camacho, explained that the baby is “progressing in a satisfactory way” after removing his medical ventilator on Thursday. “Fortunately, cases like these in the ICU are exceptional… and are normally related to patients associated with underlying illnesses or other viral infections,” Camacho has informed.

Eggscellent EASTER is coming, and although the majority of us will be stuck in the house during isolation, it can give us hours of fun to enjoy with the children.

Painting Easter eggs is fun and easy to do, lots of people buy egg decorating kits, but you can make beautiful Easter eggs with supplies out of your own cupboard.

Once your eggs are hard-boiled place them in cups filled halfway with hot water, add 1 teaspoon of vinegar and one teaspoon of food colouring.

Now simply place the egg in the colour you want, leave it for five minutes and when you lift it out you will have a perfectly dyed egg.

Before you start dipping, there are lots of ways to create different patterns

on your eggs.

Using a white crayon, write a message or draw a design on the egg before you dip it - when it comes out of the dye the wax will remain white, highlighting the design. Or you can create stripey designs on your egg by placing rubber bands or tape around your egg before dipping, when you raise it from the dye and remove the bands your egg will have stripes where the bands were.

Once you've lifted your eggs from the dye, place them gently in the empty egg carton to dry.

Once they're dry you can keep the fun going by hiding them around the house for a hunt.

Family time ENFORCED family time may seem a little daunting but by putting it to good use you may manage to encourage some life values within your children you may not have previously had the time to. Take time to do something like cooking, colouring or even listening to music with your children. These are fantastic things to be doing together and will go such a long way.

Art can be so powerful because it makes you escape for a little bit, it puts you in that mindfulness zone, and time passes so quickly. As adults, if we are doing this ourselves, then we are showing good habits to our children.

One really positive thing that will come out of this is that young people can become more independent in choosing when and what to learn. If we create children that love learning, they will automatically find new things to occupy their time with and to be inspired by.

What is extremely important is to carve out family time. Why not set a time in the day when everyone’s devices go away, try playing a board game or watching something appropriate on Netflix together.

Champ polices the streets WORLD canoe champion Saul Craviotto has returned to his former job as a policeman to help out during the coronavirus pandemic.

With the Tokyo Olympics on hold, Craviotto, 35, asked if he could return to his career in the National Police force, and is now carrying out duties in Gijón, commending members of the public for showing “a good degree of responsibility with the confinement.”

Speaking to El Comercio, Craviotto said he is very comfortable doing his job as a police officer and thanked his colleagues for the warm welcome. “I can’t ask for more,” he said.

Success Story CORONAVIRUS patients are beginning to leave the ICU and return to the normal wards. Each patient is a small victory for the medical staff and a reminder to keep up morale.

An extraordinary case is 23-year-old Adrian. This young man arrived at the Costa del Sol Hospital, Marbella on March 18 and he spent 10 days in the ICU. He left on Sunday 29 and his mother, Isabel, admitted “She was very scared” for her son.

Adrian is without voice because of the inflammation caused by the ventilator as he is not fully recovered. Isabel recalls crying heavily when medical professionals video-called her to show her son no longer needed a ventilator to breathe.

He was finally able to take a clear breath and so did she.

“It is hard because we have been preparing for that date for three years, but that is what it is about and the most important thing is health.”

Spain holidays pushed back BRITISH tour operator Jet2 Holidays has announced it has pushed back the sale of packages to Spain until midJune in the face of the situation created by the coronavirus crisis.

“We have taken the decision, against our will, that it would be reasonable not to plan operations until June 17,” it said.

Although they have not ruled out bringing forward the sale of Spanish package holidays if the restrictions on flights are removed.

Morale booster A SWEET letter from a schoolkid “to all the policemen” putting themselves out there on the frontline of the battle against coronavirus has given the force a welcome morale boost.

Third grade Alejandra tells the police how brave they are for being out on the street, writing, “I want to be like you when I’m older.”

She adds, “thank you so much for all the great work you are doing and for putting yourselves at risk in this way,” explaining that when she goes out on her balcony to take part in the tribute to essential service workers “I am clapping for you too.”

The police posted a thank you to Alejandra for her letter on social media.

In these difficult times of crisis and sacrifice we have seen many companies and businesses in difficulty and we were very sorry to see an appeal has been issued by the Olive Press for financial support from its readers so that it doesn’t have to close.

There is a German word ‘Schadenfreude’ which refers to pleasure derived from someone else’s misfortune and readers might be forgiven in thinking this is how we at Euro Weekly News might feel, but this couldn’t be further from the truth.

cessful and we certainly don’t wish to see those working at Olive Press losing their jobs or being placed in difficult financial situations.

We all take a different view of our priorities and at EWN we have a long track record of being part of an expatriate community here in Spain which is why we have run fundraising campaigns for charities (not ourselves) and try to promote life here rather than simply looking to point fingers and cause controversy.

Our income is down considerably, but the proprietors are determined to do their best to keep our family of workers employed, our suppliers paid and our readers entertained by putting their house on the line, not begging for charity from the community that they attack on a regular basis!

At the same time we will continue to try to assist all of those who are raising money for those in poverty or need as well as supporting our friends in the animal charities so that those who are in desperate straits are taken care off one way or another.

We hope and expect to come out of this bloodied but unbowed, with a new sense of appreciation for what we have and hopefully a band of readers who will continue to support our advertisers who are the life blood of any free paper.

Happy 60th Wedding Anniversary EVERY night in Calle Nardos, Los Pacos, Fuengirola, residents come to their front doors to applaud the essential services who continue to work during this State of Alarm.

Whilst observing the lockdown, the 8pm event is bringing the residents together as Martyn Wood of Big M Promotions has a very loud PA system and each night he plays music requested by neighbours through their WhatsApp group.

Thursday April 2 was a very special night as all of the neighbours in their individual houses produced special greetings for the street’s oldest residents, Robert and Isabelle Douglas who were celebrating their Diamond Wedding Anniversary (60th) and they were serenaded by the sound of The Three Tenors singing Brindisi.

Wildlife enjoys the Lockdown AS there is so much less traffic on the roads and people on the streets, wildlife which can sometimes be shy is beginning to make an appearance nearer to town centres.

The wild boars which have been regular visitors to Benahavis have now appeared in the Urbanisation of Los Naranjos, which is part of Nueva Andalucia

and close to Porto Banus.

Deer have been seen on at least one beach in the Estepona area and a large flock of Iberian Ibex (mountain goats) have been quite content to wander the road between Ojen and Monda.

The elephant on the beach at San Pedro seafront is still there and hasn’t wandered off.

Easter procession THE health workers of the Regional Hospital of Malaga decided to hold their own Easter procession in the corridors of the hospital in which they remembered some of the most important brotherhoods in the city.

Dressed in masks, gloves and protective equipment, the workers solemnly marched through one of the hospital corridors, according to a video shown on social media.

ANIMAL charity the ARCH Centre, situated between Coin and Alhaurin el Grande is currently home to eight horses and eight donkeys.

With lockdown throughout Spain many of their volunteers can no longer go and help look after them. A core group have permission to travel to the Centre to feed, clean, groom and generally attend to all chores. While ARCH is coping well with

Message of hope SEVEN-HUNDRED children across the world have come together to form a virtual choir in a bid to spread hope and solidarity amid the coronavirus emergency.

The choir sang Nessun Dorma, the famous aria from Puccini’s opera Turandot. The initiative was directed by the association Europa InCanto, who invited children from Italy, Europe and across the world to participate in the virtual event.

Help for residents FUENGIROLA Town Hall has launched a donation campaign to financially or materially help the residents of the city most affected by the health crisis. This initiative arises as during this time different companies, groups and individuals have contacted the government team to offer funds, provisions or materials to residents of the town that this situation has hit severely.

“The pandemic is already causing serious problems for many residents and families in our town. Companies, groups and many other Fuengirolans are not indifferent to this terri-

ble situation. In the face of these acts of generosity and solidarity, we have opened a bank account, so that everyone who wants to contribute can,” explained Mayor Ana Mula.

The funds collected will be managed by the Department of Social Services, which based on the usual criteria and scales, will pay bills and expenses of residents who effectively prove that they are in a vulnerable economic situation as a consequence of the COVID-19 crisis.

OAP Romeo and Juliet EVER since the border crossing at Aventoft which separates Denmark from Germany has been closed, a boyfriend and girlfriend meet each day to chat, have lunch and a drink.

Inga Rasmussen is 85 and lives in Denmark whilst Karsten Tüchsen Hansen is 89 and they have been friends for two years, but never expected to be kept apart in this way and although they call each other on the phone, they bring chairs from home so they can meet on a daily basis.

food and drink across the border although they know they mustn’t hug.

IN order to cope with the huge increase of referrals to the Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella, the management has set up a new Outpatients Department for those who don’t have symptoms of coronavirus.

Those who need treatment still have to report to the Emergency Room where they will be as-

sessed and if necessary sent to the new Outpatients Department which may mean that they have to wait in the open air until they can be seen.

In order to give them shelter however in case it rains, the Marbella Football Club, with the physical assistance of the Marbella Fire Brigade and Civil Protection, has donated its

access tunnel from the Municipal Stadium which was purchased in 2015 with the financial assistance of sponsors Lola’s Bar Fuengirola.

Time will tell whether this friendly gesture will stay upright if it becomes very windy and also whether there will be sufficient room inside to allow social distancing.

EVERY year the company that manages the AP-7 toll road increases prices at Christmas, Easter and summer knowing that Marbella in particular is a magnet for second homers from Madrid who want to get to the coast.

There are very few people travelling because of the lockdown caused by the State of Alarm but those who need to drive for their work are being forced to pay higher charges despite the fact that the flood of visitors isn’t going to happen as Easter pricing comes into effect.

London hotel sold

THE Ritz Hotel has become a sur­ vivor of the coronavirus crisis as the day it closed under the lock­ down it was sold for an undis­ closed sum to a Qatari invest­ ment fund which has indicated that it will pay all of the existing staff in full until the hotel can re­ open.

The previous owners, the reclusive Barclay Brothers are thought to have expected to sell the historic property for far more than the £80 (€88) million they paid for it in 1995.

Double Taxation Agreement THE Government of Gibraltar has entered into a double tax agree­ ment (DTA) with the United King­ dom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and is looking to extend such agreements further with other coun­ tries.

The main purpose of any DTA is to divide the right of taxation between the contracting countries, to avoid differences, to ensure taxpayers’ equal rights and security, and to pre­ vent evasion of taxation.

blame others for this vicious pandemic of death - which undoubtedly began in the Wuhan area of their country.

Whether it was from one of their despicable, cruel and utterly repulsive ‘live animal markets,’ or leaked from some experimental laboratory, is

irrelevant. The postings on social media, which they try so hard to suppress, has more than proved to the free thinking world that they knew about this virus long before the knowledge was finally made public.

We know of at least two young medical practitioner

They also must have known more than the rest of us when they hastily erected two hospitals containing 4,000 beds all those weeks ago. No, I’m afraid these arrogant officials would rather put millions of lives in jeopardy than lose face, and have now proved to the world just how dangerous they actually are.

Not only have they had the gall to try and shift the blame onto others, but have set their zombie like workforce the task of manufacturing millions of protective and medical testing apparatus - to actually sell to people suffering and dying from the very malady they have inflicted.

Plus, to make matters even worse, the first huge batches of these materials are actually of dubious quality. Bit like most of the rubbish they have been foisting on us through the utter-

ly substandard tacky shops, that have sprouted like bean shoots over the last few years.

Well, when it’s all over, I for one would like to see them issue an acceptance of responsibility along with an unmitigated public apology. Well, imagine that you are streaming BBC World News and the stream typically comes from a server in the UK, then it needs to travel for thousands of kilometres and suffer numerous possible points of bandwidth congestion before it reaches Spain, and then your screen. The Proxy Server basically sits ‘inside’ the network that you are locally connected to, so that instead of fetching this stream from the UK, it is fetching it from a server that is much closer to you. The results speak for themselves as in most cases it is possible to continue enjoying the streams in HD quality as they are not being ‘fetched’ from a server that is thousands of Kms away and currently suffering from bandwidth congestion.

WHAT’S THE FIRST THING YOU’LL DO? GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY IT’S a question that arose again, and again lately. While these days of isolation make us question life on many leve l s . S u d d e n l y, w e a re f o rc e d to rethink what we value, and urged to think of life after the current sadness.

As the days went on, I noticed my life change totally. Used to sleeping early and waking, really early, to run on the beach. Days were busy, filled with engagements. Now, I rise by 10am, go to bed around midnight, to read and stare at my phone, until around 3am. Followed by a day trying to tame my hair.

I have no desire to work-out, even though, I know I'm lucky, having a house on the beach, with a pool. I should be making the most of my time. The guilt of this alone, consumes me. I look at online fitness videos and resent the trainers.

Life sure has changed.

Then again, we are all in the same boat, and again I am lucky, as my family are healthy at the time of writing this. Honestly, the days have blurred into one, and I find myself almost surprised, when I realise it’s Friday. As if the weekend is upon us. All I seem to do is watch BBC News on loop, and wonder if another martini, is one too many.

Which makes me wonder, why are we watching country, after country, roll out a delayed lockdown? Why not watch Italy, watch Spain, and act immediately?

Which in turn, makes me angry.

As much as I love my dog Henry, he has now somehow attached himself to me, with no signs of backing off. We sleep together. He sits on my knee, as I sip my first espresso. I go upstairs, he’s behind me. Of course, he eats most of my meals. Mornings, are spent drinking endless coffee, and gardening.

Lunch remains, as always - long

HENRY: Has now attached himself to me. and fun. Mid-afternoon, I light the fires, close the shutters and somehow it feels like January. All very hum-drum, yet somehow, lovely. It’s as if we’ve been thrust back in time to a simpler life, when spending more time at home was the norm.

Yet still, my mind kept questioning what I wanted to do, once I was free to do so, and then it came to me. Now, I can’t be sure if it was the wine, or laziness, but I’ve decided that what I want, is more of this quiet life.

We race around so much, in the ‘real world,’ per haps it’s time to slow down on many levels. One thing is for sure, I want my fitness back. For my sanity, if nothing else.

As my regular viewers and readers will know, Linea Directa has been so supportive of Marbella Now and all our incentives as a community, particularly for road traffic safety.

Although a major company which relies principally on Internet and telephone, when it comes to it, you can tell that the company really has heart and everything is very personal.

Perhaps it’s because they treat their staff so well and they’re all proud of what they do. As I understand it they don’t make staff stay for late meetings and are also unique as its entire call staff are on full contracts. You can tell that their system works as everyone I’ve ever met or spoken to from the company boasts a sense of pride and goes out of their way to live up to the company’s

Business as usual?

Thanks to Silvia and Alejandra of Linea Directa for believing in ZeroHero - we won their social category award 2018. claims and our expectations.

Even now in crisis they have had to adapt like everyone else but not one ERTE has been issued, which means no staff

have been laid off.

What they had to do is firstly enable all employees to work from home, not so easy as not everyone has the same com-

puters or Internet speed to access documentation. Even though the cars aren’t out as much as usual they’re apparently as busy as ever with over 125,000 calls taken in the past days and dealing with over 5,000 claims.

They are also opening up their lines to non-customers with staff having volunteered to also help answer questions about Coronavirus and assist with information for those with family members in hospitals.

Advertising Feature I WAS driving to work last week, and I looked around me to see nothing but a ghost town in front of me. I got to wondering is this what the world wars would have been like, isolation. Rations, lockdowns, strict guidelines of how to conduct your life, a complete sense of loneliness ?

That evening I called my 97-year-old Nana who has witnessed most things during her time.

This is what she told me: “I have never been through or endured anything like this in my lifetime. I am 97 years old; I live alone, I am in isolation as I am high risk, I am not allowed to go outside or let anyone into my apartment, I have limited funds and resources. I normally rely on my family and care workers to get my shopping, call around and help with my exercise, prepare my meals, help with cleaning and washing. Now all of this interaction has been stripped back to the bare minimum.

I used to go down to the recreation room to socialise with the tenants here most evenings, in fact it was one of the things that kept me sane, having that human contact. It was something to look forward to. Recently someone I have been

friends with for over 50 years has been taken into hospital with, what is, I believe to be, this virus.

I cannot tell you how frightened and alone I feel. I worry about dying. Who will find me? Who will even know I have gone? Will anybody be able to attend my funeral? Can I be cremated? If I wasn’t doolally before all this began, I certainly will be after it has all passed.”

I reassured my 97-year-old Nana that this is hard for everyone, but that isolation is for the best and working for Golden Leaves I was able to ease her concerns, by putting contingences in to place for finding her, one call to us and everything is taken care of as per her wishes, a small group of family members could attend her service and as she met the criteria she

could indeed be cremated.

I went on to say: “Nana, you need to keep in isolation to keep safe so you can reach that 100-year mark and get your letter from the Queen.” She laughed and told me that she had been putting off making her funeral arrangements for years as she believed it to be bad luck.

“Now for my own peace of mind I need to sort out my affairs. Please can we sort out my funeral arrangements? Just so that if anything does happen, I will know that you do not have to worry about finding the money, especially, in the current climate and I will know that I will be taken

Having a conversation like that with my own Grandmother really brought home to me just how isolated people are from the world. They now, more than ever, have a genuine fear of passing away and not having all their affairs in order and uncertainty of what will happen to them during this State of Alarm.

It is so important to take that pressure and financial burden away from your family who, at this time, cannot even get to you or your remaining partner/spouse to support them if they are in a different country.

Let’s not start blaming the minorities, ‘eh.

SINCE the start of the pandemic, we haven’t heard much from the FarRight.

The usual loud-mouthed media names like rent-a-gob, Katie Hopkins and professional millionaire bigot, Tommy Robinson, have been very quiet too. Maybe they’re still blabbering on, but perhaps there’s more important things for the media to focus on right now? Who knows?

But their absence from the UK media spotlight has been a welcome change.

Then Vox, the far-right Spanish political party, pop up. They recently proposed that Spain should end universal healthcare. Meaning all non-residents will have to pay for healthcare if they get ill with the Corona Virus! That’s not only inhu-

mane, but also dangerous. If those people can’t pay, they would be left out in society to infect many others!

Quite Frankly, it’s a ridiculous suggestion. But hardly surprising from the FarRight!

We’ve also been warned by the Italian Premier, Giuseppe Conte, about the possible rise in Nationalism in the country. As anger at the EU’s response to the crisis grows, whatever problems Italy have getting extra EU funding right now, turning to Nationalism isn’t the answer.

Oh and please stop with the 5G conspiracy theories which, on one video I watched, turned out to be someone trying to sell crypto currency. On the plus side I’ve checked the mileage on my car and I’m now getting four weeks to the gallon on my fuel consumption.

I went through my man drawer and found lots of wires and chargers. Some of the leads were still in the original plastic.

How can you possibly dispose of something that’s never been opened? The four odd flat battery things might be useful and for some insane reason I found myself seeing if I could charge my Nokia 3120. Oh and the spare key for a car I sold in 1997 that must be useful I’m sure.

Here’s something that is going to put everything into some kind of perspective.

Willie Nelson, who is 86, has had four wives, seven children, 350 albums and his own line in marihuana. On a show the other day he said this is the weirdest thing he’s ever seen and, believe me, he’s done some weird stuff. I have to go now because I have lots of things I’m nearly going to do today. Or I might just find another box set to watch.

Experts believe this will be the biggest financial disaster since the Great Depression. It will be testing times. There are dark forces out there that will try and exploit this situation for their own agendas. No matter how tough things get, blaming minorities isn’t the answer.

Most of us reading this newspaper are immigrants ourselves. We could find that we’re the ones being blamed for hardship. It’s not hard to imagine that there will be resentment if we’re financially stable. I believe we should treat others how we’d wish to be treated, as we could easily end up the refugees.

I think now is the time we drop the hatred and resentment of immigrants and refugees, that we’ve seen so much of in recent times. We all need to work together as a globe to get through this.

OUR VIEW Long-lasting actions WITHOUT a doubt 2020 will be a recession year in every advanced economy. Most affected countries have already adopted strict lockdown measures. The economic statistics already coming in are abysmal and it is almost impossible for most people to work or spend as much as they used to.

Understandably, the first economic policy response was: do something, do it big and do it fast. The first priority of these policies should be to support the health sector, quickly increasing the capacity of beds, staff and ventilators, mobilising the production of the valuable equipment and nurturing innovation in treatments and vaccines.

Secondly, to preserve well-being, facing a disaster that affects everyone, governments must provide social insurance to help the most vulnerable make it through.

Another goal is to have the economy ready to go back to work with a minimal shortfall in productivity when the lockdown period loosens. The fear is that companies that cannot make payments during the freeze will close their doors for good. Some workers who are laid off now will later have trouble finding the same job that suits them and pays well. To keep businesses afloat, almost every country has deferred some, or most, tax payments. That is an effective and simple way for the government to give credit.

Finally, policymakers must stimulate the economy as soon as we can get back to work. For all countries, the disruption in the production and supply chains might lead to large increases in prices.

This biggest trade-off that moderate policymakers face today is to separate the temporary exceptional measures from permanent long-lasting revolutions.

CORRECTIONS

Troubled mind Hi Leapy, As you know, here, in Spain, we are in a lockdown which is severely upheld by the army and the police and has just been extended to the middle of April, possibly, beyond.

My mind is very confused by this virus. We know for sure that it began in China where we are told, it arose from a market where cats, dogs, snakes and bats are slaughtered and sold in appalling conditions.

The virus was identified in December last year, or earlier, but not announced to the rest of the world for at least two months or more.

Around the world where it has spread, there is now a desperate shortage of relevant medical equipment, drugs, sanitisers, masks, gloves and clothing.

The reason there is such a shortage of those items worldwide is due to the virus which began in China, and because most countries get their supplies of these products from guess where - China! This is because stricken countries that are now desperate for such products ceased manufacturing them a while ago because China does it cheaper.

Desperate countries are now buying masses of those products from China again, where, according to today’s news, their lockdowns are being eased and the Ground Zero markets where the virus began are now back in business as usual and booming!

Meanwhile, many countries, including the world’s economic leaders, will take 10 to 20 years to fully recover from the effects of the virus and the massive cost of the support they have had to give to businesses and their citizens.

If you follow my thoughts on this subject you may also feel that this entire economic and political merry-go-round needs serious investigation and a major rethink on how we and other countries handle the production of such critical products in future, which, in my opinion, the NHS should play a significant role in that.

This is my troubled mind talking while trapped in this unprecedented, worldwide lockdown.

Johnson had known what was coming since January and did absolutely nothing. Whether you agree with Starmer’s timing is another matter, but what he says is true. The PPE and testing fiasco is down to the government. They even ‘war gamed’ it in 2016 and then suppressed the report and ignored all its findings.

Maybe ‘being nice’ about it, even at a time of crisis, is the wrong thing to do. You don’t escape scrutiny, even in hard times.

Scissor happy Reality of Bipolar

WITH salons closed during the Coronavirus crisis, many of us are wondering when we’ll be able to get our next haircut. While the chop isn’t urgent for many of us, some are reaching for the scissors to do it ourselves.

However, before you do get stuck into at-home cutting, it’s helpful to know what the experts suggest.

After your hair is washed

and towel dried, section your hair from the front and the back and then split your back sections into two new sections - the split needs to be from ear to ear. As the sections are created, less hair is involved, making it easier to manage.

Make sure that you cut in clean lines and that you cut the same amount on each section. For a trim we recommend cutting 1cm to

2cm. This will ensure that split ends are removed and that your hair will look cleaner and fresh.

Repeat the same section by section until you reach the top of the head. You then need to section the front into two new sections each and cut it one by one. Make sure that you again cut the same amount as you did at the back.

FOR THE CHOP: Make sure that you cut in clean lines.

WHO I am and what I have are two very different things.

Who I am is a survivor. I battle this ‘something’ and strongly, I battle something that lives in me and pretends to be me in moments of vulnerability. It can creep up on me at any time, I can be having dinner with the family, laughing and joking and suddenly this dark cloud comes over me.

I can be enjoying a film and all of a sudden I can’t watch it any more. I can be in a restaurant having dinner and have the sudden urge that I need to get out of there and go back home.

But the truth that I realised which keeps me going is that it DOES NOT make me who I am.

Sure, it tries to claim itself to be me every now and again, trying to pull me further down in to the depths of despair.

But over time, that only did one thing - it began to reveal itself for what it was.

I see it now. A shapeless dark shadow ‘thing’ that dwells in a place I hold sacred trying to take over, MY HAPPINNESS. I asked myself once, who am I if I cannot trust my own mind…?

Who is the person asking this question, in this moment, if not something separate from that vile thing?

Who is the person that wants to and does fight it every day, to find any

amount of happiness and purpose in living?

And the answer to those questions is … Me! Not bipolar.

And that is truth behind it all. Keep fighting it, and the more you fight the more you separate yourself from it. You are not bipolar, you have bipolar.

Yes, there will be days you lose the fight and fall hard. But every day you try to fight it inside, you claim back a little piece of your identity from the clutches of the nasty illness.

A place within where we feel real, a place within that we can call home… no matter how small it is, and no matter what the threats are.

This crazy ride that bipolar disorder takes me on, is like picking a side which by then you’re long lost. It breaks your life into a million pieces. Struck by a knife, thrown at me like darts, most of the time I feel like am actually drowning .

How do I survive this roller coaster ride when most of the time I don’t feel in control of the drive… Make peace with the night and hold on tight to the ride, away from the ride breaks a new dawn and a new day to fight again.

It is not about winning the fight every day. The point is to keep fighting it. You are not the illness, the illness is a part of you. It’s okay to not be okay.

niques to help you: 1. Slow down - Re-establish that sense of control by slowing down.

Whilst it may feel as though you are not being productive when there’s so much to do, you’ll actually accomplish much more in less time and in a more pleasant way.

2. Focus on the here and now - You cannot control what will happen tomorrow, nor can you change what happened yesterday! The more you focus on the here and now, the fewer thoughts you will have on the past or the future.

Semana Santa during lockdown UNDER normal circumstances this would be one of the most exciting weeks of the year in Spain as villages, towns, suburbs and cities celebrate Holy Week (Semana Santa).

Even if as a foreigner you don’t understand the nuances of each parade or indeed why many of those taking part look like members of the Klu Klux Klan who had fallen into a vat of dye, it is still a fascinating event.

Clubs exist to look after the various huge statues which are paraded through the streets and as music has always been part of the Spanish tradition, there are numerous bands (some better than others) taking part.

Look and learn The ladies of Porcuna. parades dressed in black wearing mantillas (veils) and peinetas (combs) in their hair and already this year at least one group has undertaken their first parade with each person keeping properly distanced in the town of Porcuna in Jaen.

This may well have been an unofficial parade but in parts of Spain, priests have been seen blessing the streets and in some cases with official approval.

Whereas in the past, every local TV channel devoted hours of time to

showing the parades, there are still many who will repeat scenes from last year’s parades and also transmit whatever masses and blessings take place in isolation.

It won’t be as much fun this year but just might have a lot more meaning.

WITH UK TV unable to produce new episodes of favourite programmes such as EastEnders and Coronation Street they are turning more and more to repeats and this will get worse.

Many local Spanish channels are transmitting shows for children but they are in Spanish and not everyone will be able to

understand them.

If you want something in English as a change to keep the kids occupied, the Gibraltar government is transmitting online Monday to Friday next week a mixture of shows suitable for children from 10am to 2pm.

This week Celebrity Chef & Fellow Master Chef Steven Saunders, proprietor of The Little Geranium in La Cala shares his secret for Katsu sauce with us, easy to make & fantastic with panko prawns

Panko Prawns with Katsu… at home!

I have been cooking some fantastic food for our HomeChef Company which has really taken off. However we feel that we are putting ourselves and others at risk by delivering into people’s homes every day.

The idea was to help people, give them a treat, a special meal but I don’t want to put Michele (who does the deliveries) or anyone for that matter, to risk and so it is with regret that we have to suspend the company’s services until further notice.

Last week Euro Weekly Newspaper group owners (Steven and Michel Euesden) ordered from HomeChef and said it was

the best fine dining food ever, in the comfort of their own home.

We will be back delivering as soon as this virus disaster dies down! So in the meantime try this simple recipe, at home.

It is inspired by Japanese flavours; the sauce is called Katsu and has really taken off in the West. Katsu works well with fried chicken, crispy duck and especially prawns.

When you do get out to go shopping, go to the freezer section in the supermarket (where there is more choice) and look for boxes of large prawns with shells on. On the box it will say (if in Spain!) Congelado a bordo which means frozen on board.

Years ago I was filming an outside broadcast show for This Morning TV and I went on a fishing trip to Cornwall. I knew nothing about fishing, so I asked lots of questions.

HOME DELIVERIES: Have been suspended until further notice.

I remember one of the questions was why they were freezing the prawns we caught on board and not delivering them fresh? “Because my boy,” the fisherman said, “we won’t be docking until later today and they will sit on this boat in the sunshine and then they wont be so fresh when we get them to shore!” They blanched the prawns in huge pots of boiling water on the boat and then

dropped them into another huge pot filled with iced water and then they packed them into a freezer on board.

So when you buy frozen prawns look for the wording frozen on board and they will be as fresh as they can get!

Once you have your prawns you will need to defrost them and peel and debowel them by removing that annoying little vein on the back of each

prawn. Then coat them in panko breadcrumbs and deep fry or you can use a wok or saucepan half filled with vegetable or sunflower oil.

Panko breadcrumbs are a Japanese breadcrumb made by drying large flakes of crustless bread. The difference between them and regular breadcrumbs is that they are light, made lighter by not using the crusts.

When fried they keep crispy longer (ideal for home deliveries!) and when you bite through the crispy crumb into the soft prawn and then dip into the Katsu sauce… well, all your troubles fade away for a few minutes!

It’s an easy recipe but this Katsu sauce is my own creation and it makes it unique. I have blended my own desires together to create a sweet, slightly salty, dipping sauce and although I say it myself… it really is a sensation!

Panko Katsu Prawns (Serves two) 16 large prawns peeled but with tails still connected 2 eggs whole beaten 4 tablespoons of plain flour 8 tablespoons of panko breadcrumbs * (see note) with 2 tablespoons plain flour mixed into it Seasoning (Maldon salt and pepper) Sushi ginger (optional) Wakame seaweed (optional, you can often find this frozen) 2 teaspoons of Japanese 7 spice or various mixed spices Sesame seeds A little salad as garnish dressed with lemon and olive oil Sunflower oil for deep frying Katsu sauce (see recipe below) Chef’s Note: Panko breadcrumbs are best but you can dry your own bread (avoiding the crusts) and

then blend it when it is dried in your food processor Katsu Sauce This fantastic sauce originates from Japan but I have eaten it in many countries and adapted the recipe according to what I think is best. In our restaurant we make our own chilli sauce as the base but I know that you are not going to be able to do that at home so please see below and try this simple recipe.

2 heaped tablespoons of sweet chilli sauce 1 tablespoon of good quality soy sauce 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon of sesame oil 1 teaspoon dried chilli flakes Juice of ½ lemon

Method for sauce and prawns For sauce simply mix all the ingredients together and taste and reserve Dip the peeled prawns into the egg then the flour and finally and carefully coat with the panko breadcrumbs Arrange on a tray and get the fat fryer heated to 190ºC Fry in two batches 1 x 8 prawns then 1 x 8 prawns Cook until crispy, approximately two minutes Remove and drain on a tray lined with kitchen paper Season with the spices the sesame seeds and the salt and pepper Serve hot with the Katsu sauce in a dipping dish, a little dressed salad and garnish with the sushi ginger and the wakame seaweed
