BEFORE YOU

AT the time of going to print, as from Monday, May 11, many businesses will be looking to reopen as isolation laws ease off in Spain. Before you zoom off for your first haircut in almost two months or to meet up with your friends for a boozy lunch, there are some things you should think about. STOP: Firstly, do you have your face mask on? With many more people on the street and visiting these places of business, you are putting yourself and others at risk if you are not protected. Spain is a country that kisses hello and goodbye, for now, you should remain two metres apart. The more carefully we treat this deescalation the more likely it is to succeed. THINK: The family coffee shop on the corner with the best espresso, the little restaurant you had amazing tapas, the local fruit shop with fresh produce, the panaderia that is open all hours on a skeleton staff. This notion has appeared in the electronic agreement between the Minister of Territorial Policy and Public Function, Carolina Darias, and the unions, CSIF, UGT, CCOO and GIG. This has formed part of the framework of the transitional plan towards a new normality as they have incorporated organisational measures for a progressive faceto-face incorporation of public employees of the General State Administration. Food fairies

The lifeline of the community THE Food Fairies have continued to work day and night feeding families from Duquesa to Malaga and accrued an army of 27 members. Newest recruits Jacky Baverstock and Chris from The Harbour Marbella joined as delivery drivers at different ends of the coast taking some pressure off the girls. The group have been receiving an amazing amount of food donations, however, dozens of new cases of families needing help come along daily with the hundreds they already have. Kara Jaye Caradas is extremely thankful for all the donations they have received and said: “The wonderful chaps at Calahonda’s Gemini 51 Masonic Lodge showed just what a real bunch of Fairies they really are when they organised a donation of €250 worth of fresh cuts of meat for distribution to our grateful families.” She went on to say that “Restaurante El Banco has

Frontier Talks starting GIBRALTAR’S Chief Minister Fabian Picardo has confirmed that he is having talks with the Spanish Foreign Ministry about opening the frontier to allow people to travel between Spain and the Rock - with restrictions - amid the coronavirus pandemic. “This will obviously be a reciprocal arrangement,” pointed out Picardo. “If the frontier opens for us to be able to go to Spain other than for work or because we live there, it would

also obviously open also for Spanish residents to be able to come to Gibraltar.” However, “strict measures” would have to be put in place, such as temperature checks of people entering Gibraltar, he explained. “People who have a temperature, for example, will be denied entry,” Picardo confirmed. He said he also wants to potentially “be able to offer a test at the frontier” to check for the virus.

Beaches could reopen THE regional Andalucia administration wants the central government to give the green light to opening local beaches on the Costa del Sol ahead of the phased lockdown plan schedule. May 25 is the date local politicians have pencilled in their request to begin, with An-

dalucia saying that all necessary safety precautions like social distancing would be taken. The region has suffered fewer Covid-19 cases compared to the rest of mainland Spain during the coronavirus crisis, and relies heavily on domestic and international tourism.

The regional government also feels that an early reopening would give a muchneeded boost to the local hospitality industry which has been closed down during the State of Alarm period. They’ve called for tax exemptions to be offered to beach bars across the Costa del Sol.

Kara said “With people now finally receiving ERTE we can hope that a little normality will be restored. Thank you to all who supported us! “We could never have done it without you!! What a HUGE achievement this has been x.” And she is right, what a huge

Squatters Artificial Intelligence CREDIT: Michelle Spark

LOCKED OUT: Michelle says she is homeless while squatters are living in her Fuengirola home A BRITISH expat has made a desperate cry for help as months after squatters took over her home on the outskirts of Fuengirola. Michelle Spark said she had already been left penniless from taking her tenant to court for not paying the rent and not only did she end up having to get her tenant evicted, but the woman went one step further and sold the key to the property to squatters. “I saw them move in, I thought they were friends of my ex-tenant, helping her to move out,” she explained. When the penny

dropped that the supposed friends meant to stay in her apartment Michelle called the police. But according to her they ‘sided’ with the new occupants, leaving them living in her home. Nine months on and Michelle says she is still no nearer getting the squatters out. She is now hoping to connect with others facing a similar nightmare “to sort this ridiculous situation of squatters being able to stay in your home illegally while the owner is homeless. “Please help me if you can.” Shelspark@sky.com

FUENGIROLA’S Town Hall has announced that they hope to use artificial intelligence to control the capacity of beaches and public spaces. The municipality has said it will use a computer program developed by a local company which allows for real-time information, regarding levels of attendance at beaches, to be analysed in order to avoid crowds and minimise the risk of infection. Results are also carried out in real time by artificial intelligence to warn citizens about occupancy levels by using percentages and colours. “If everything is correct it will be marked in green; when a grid reaches 75 per cent it appears in yellow, and when it reaches 100 per cent of maximum capacity it will turn red,” points out Moreno, the

Barber Flouts LESS than 48 hours after small businesses were allowed to reopen as part of Spain’s de-escalation, a barber shop on the Costa del Sol is reportedly in trouble for overcrowding. When Local Police arrived at the small Malaga premises of less than 70 metres on Monday April 4, after a call from a plain-

clothed colleague, they seemingly discovered three hairdressers and four customers packed flouting social distancing measures. Suspicions were raised when officers spotted a queue of potential customers waiting outside the barbers in the Los Tilos area. The owner has been denounced.

Protection kits Mijas has distributed Covid-19 protection kits to all families in the town. MIJAS Town Tall has carried out a door-to-door delivery of 900,000 Covid-19 protection kits for every household in the coastal town. Each family got face masks and a few bottles of hand sanitiser gel, depending on the number of people in each family. One resident was pleasantly surprised when she got a delivery of two boxes delivered to her home this week. “Each box contained two masks and a bottle of hand sanitiser,” said Karen Brady of La Cala De Mijas. “Looks like the world is finally catching on to the value of wearing masks,” she added.

Drowning at Beauty Spot INFORMATION has come to light concerning the death of a young woman at the area of the Poza de las Mozas of the Rio Guadalmina in Benahavis on Wednesday April 30. This may have been a drunken accident as the 25-year-old known as Oshim broke lockdown with a friend and drove to the beauty spot which has a pool with an eroded natural slide. The young woman may have been drinking and jumped into the pool fully clothed according to her companion and suddenly disappeared under the water. Her friend jumped in but could not find her and with some difficulty because of a strong undertow managed to climb out. After shouting Oshim’s name for some time, she decided that as it was getting dark she should call for assistance and officers from the Local Police and Guardia Civil arrived. As they were unable to find any sign of the girl, they called for the Marbella Fire Brigade and the next step was to call for divers but at around midnight the body of the dead girl surfaced and was removed for a postmortem.

A S H A R K o f b e t w e e n t h re e a n d four metres in length has seemingly come close to the shore of Calahonda beach on the Costa del Sol on May 3, according to Ideal Granada, which has shared video footage on social media. Its presence is said to be due to the lack of activity in the water, with a reduction in marine traffic causing the shark to approach the coastline. Calahonda is apparently a common area for shortfin mako sharks, but the species in the clip is not be-

The images were taken from the pier on Sunday morning, “to the surprise of those who were walking on the beach,” claims Ideal, adding that a canoeist was sailing through the waters nearby. As well as a drop in marine traffic, the State of Alarm has left deserted streets across the country, leaving the coast clear for wild boar and roe deer amongst other animals, with numerous clips and photographs circulating on social media.

Political Viewpoint from Spain by DAMON MITCHELL EURO WEEKLY NEWS spoke to expat Allan Cobb to ask his opinion on the extension to the State of Alarm in Spain. “Well Sanchez got his votes, it could have been a complete game-changer. Nationalist parties from Catalonia had already stated they would vote against it. With the PP against the extension, the government had tried to increase the pressure by reminding the party that overturning the extension of the State of Alarm would have meant condemning Spain in ‘health and economic chaos’ as of May 11.” He went on to point out that “With the State of Alarm extended, the phases which were announced would not be valid, and after May 11 each region will have to implement their own de-escalation. “Andalucia, for example, is run by the PP and their proposal was more ambitious with the opening of businesses, on the other hand, the Valencian region is run by PSOE and theirs would be more in line with the main government.”

By John Smith and in one year alone lost £545 mil lion to the cost of the tax payer, but to the benefit of those purchasing the shares. There are a number of top Span ish executives running the different airlines and IAG has announced that it expects to borrow a total of €1.01 billion (€750 million for Iberia and €260 million for Vueling) to allow it to support Iberia and Vueling during the crisis. The loans from a consortium of lenders will only be made, if they are

backed by backed by Spain’s State In stituto de Crédito Oficial which is per fectly possible under legal frameworks set up by the Spanish government to mitigate the economic impact of Covid19. The loans are repayable at any time over five years and will include restric tions which will not allow IAG to use any of the financing to support other parts of the business including British Airways. The company is confident that it will receive the necessary Spanish guarantees otherwise it would not have made this information public.

WHEN pension freedoms were in troduced in 2015, it was possible for those over the age of 55 to withdraw money from their defined contribu tion pension pots. The first 25 per cent was tax free but if the pension provider does not hold an uptodate tax code, an ‘emergency tax code’ will be applied which assumes a oneoff payment is actually a monthly one. So far more than £600 million has been refunded by the tax office with an average payment in excess of £3,000 per claimant.

LEGALLY SPEAKING Can they put a surcharge? Further to your reply in the EWN of April 23 29 stating that Spanish community law pro hibits communities of property owners from placing surcharges for late payment of community fees, could you please direct me to the section of the horizontal law where this appears? B M (by email)

No I can not. This is because the law it YOU AND THE LAW self neither pro IN SPAIN hibits nor empow ers communities to levy surcharges. The law only says that the community can deprive the debtor of the right to vote in the AGM and can go to court against him to recover the debt. So it becomes a matter of what the judges say. For many years, the Spanish courts when challenged ruled that the community could not levy surcharges on the debtors or forbid them the use of services such as the swimming pool. That is why I said that surcharges were forbidden. In recent years, however, some courts have be gun to rule that surcharges may be acceptable, if they are written into the original statutes of the community. So the answer to your question depends on what the court rules in your specific case.

Currency outlook: Coronavirus crisis dominates and EU tensions take their toll on the euro ASK THE EXPERT Peter Loveday

Contact me at euroweekly@currenciesdirect.com

EURO EUR/GBP: Down from £0.89 to £0.87 EUR/USD: Down from $1.11 to $1.08 The euro has come under pres sure over the last month due to a lack of solidarity in the EU over the fiscal response to the coronavirus. So far EU leaders have been un able to agree upon a comprehen sive recovery package, and this has cast some serious doubts over the future of the union, with French President Emmanuel Macron warn ing the coronavirus crisis will be the EU’s moment of truth. But as we come to the end of April, the coronavirus situation in

EURO: Buoyed by prospect of countries starting to reopen their economies. the Eurozone has markedly im proved, with the euro buoyed by the prospect of countries starting to reopen their economies in the coming weeks. However, the road to recovery remains long, and the single curren cy is vulnerable to further losses due to gloomy data. The Eurozone’s upcoming GDP figures are likely to provide particular cause for con cern.

Pound GBP/EUR: Up from €1.11 to €1.14 GBP/USD: Unmoved at $1.24 The pound has traded in a wide range over the past four weeks, mostly in response to the health of Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Sterling dove at the start of April as Johnson was admitted to inten sive care due to complications from contracting the coronavirus.

GBP exchange rates were quick to bounce back however, with the pound being lifted by improving market sentiment and the Prime Minister’s discharge from hospital. Sterling faltered again towards the end of the month as some abysmal UK economic data limited the appeal of the currency once more. Going forward the main focus for GBP investors will be the UK gov ernment’s lockdown exit strategy and when we can expect restric tions to start being eased. US Dollar USD/GBP: Unmoved at £0.80 USD/EUR: Up from €0.89 to €0.91 The US dollar remained well sup ported through most of April as the uncertainty surrounding the coron avirus crisis and fears of a deep global recession kept demand for the safehaven currency high.

These gains have been tempered somewhat however by US jobless claims, as they revealed that US un employment has skyrocketed by a staggering 25 million people since the start of the coronavirus pan demic. The US dollar has begun to taper off in recent days as a more posi tive mood falls upon markets on the expectation that countries will continuing reopening their economies. Looking ahead, demand for the US dollar will likely continue to sub side so long as the global coron avirus outbreak continues to show signs of having peaked. LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT THE BBC truly is a national disgrace. It really is time this biased bunch were reined in and brought under some kind of collective control. Irrespective of the obvious need to pull everyone together and encourage unity against this devastating virus, this organisation continues to take every opportunity to cause unrest and disquiet among the citizens of the UK - ie their recent Panorama offering - unrepentantly doing all they can to turn the whole thing into a political exercise and bring the government into disrepute. Even their reporting of the government managing to reach their promised target of testing was reported through gritted teeth and some kind of endeavour to temper this magnificent effort by coming up with the lame excuse that ‘numbers of the tests had been carried out at home’! When was the last time you

RECENT OFFERING: The BBC need reined in and brought under some kind of collective control. observed this lot actually praise anything this government has done in its handling of the crisis? Well I certainly can’t. These left wing manipulators will never forgive the Conservative Party for the drubbing their leftie pals received at the last election. And it doesn’t end there. Their recent handling and subsequent corruption of the interview of their other arch enemy Donald Trump, really

does merit some kind of legal action. When they gleefully showed the President stating his views on how a virus vaccination could possibly be some derivative of bleach or heat, they made it appear that he had stridden out to the podium and launched into some maniacal mad scientist tirade. What they conveniently edited out was the footage that showed Trump had al-

ready been on stage listening to scientists discussing these very possibilities for some 20 minutes before he made his remarks. He was merely making loose comments regarding what they had already been lectured on by medical experts. Although his reactions were somewhat bumbling, taken in their true context, they were nowhere near as crazed as this biased bunch

attempted to dupe the public into believing. You know what really gets me? These disgruntled jokers actually sit in their multi-million studios of the BBC plotting and conniving how they can manipulate and alter their biased reports to suit their own ends and the British taxpayer is actually footing the bill! Talk about adding insult to injury. The sooner this organisation is replaced by a team of unbiased presenters and directors who simply report the truth and not use their constant outpourings as a means to their own political ends the better. What about a few positive messages of an enemy being slowly but surely overcome? What about an upbeat touch of ‘hope and glory’? Heaven knows the viewing public could certainly do with it. VIRUS CONSPIRACY THEORIES NORA JOHNSON BREAKING VIEWS Nora is the author of popular psychological suspense and crime thrillers and a freelance journalist. To comment on any of the issues raised in her column, go to www.euroweeklynews.com/3.0.15/nora-johnson

FROM an Italian ski resort hotel to Donald Trump’s reported threats, coronavirus ‘lawfare’ has kicked off. A flood of legal claims is expected around the world as people seek hefty compensation for damage caused by negligence or misinformation. The high-security virus laboratory which is now facing claims that it was the origin of the coronavirus pandemic (in the city of Wuhan, where the Covid-19 outbreak began last year and home to the China Centre for Virus Culture Collection, the largest virus bank in Asia which preserves more than 1,500 strains) was conducting research into coronaviruses, some derived from bats.

This bio-level 4 laboratory announced it was ‘impossible’ the pathogen could have escaped from the facility. But US diplomats reportedly questioned its poor safety procedures that could have let the virus escape during research into diseased bats. The evidence that it came from a nearby live animal market that doesn’t sell bats remains scarce. There’s much we don’t know about the origin of Covid-19, and China will do its best to ensure we never know. Wuhan is clearly in the frame and slowly the focus is starting to shift from the wet market to the laboratory. Was it poor biosecurity or something more sinister - and a subsequent Chinese government cover-up? Either way, rich material for a dramatised documentary. Did anyone watch ‘Chernobyl’? State coverups, state lies, state mishan-

dling of everything, to the detriment of hundreds of thousands. Ring any bells? Countries need to be held accountable for such atrocities. But will they? Don’t bank on any answers soon - if ever. As the world throws up many more questions than answers, we’re just going to have to wait - just like for a vaccine - for quite a long time. Remember what Winston Churchill said after that other battle, El Alamein? “This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is,

perhaps, the end of the beginning.” Where we are now is not the end of the beginning. It’s just the beginning. WE ALL NEED HELP GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY AS a child, my mother instilled the importance of kindness, to myself and my brother. I remember her telling us, that if someone is rude, be kind back to them, as they deserve our help. They deserve kindness the most. We were taught to treat everyone equally, and I like to think that I do. There are many forms of kindness, the most powerful, being kindness that requires nothing in return. Kindness that doesn’t require a fanfare, or rounds of applause. Kindness that goes on, each day, all over the world and keeps the earth’s heart pumping. As the lockdown continued, I was inundated by requests from people asking me to join their charities, or help out in some way. I was shocked by the amount of people who contacted me - mainly via social media some pretty aggressively, as if what they were asking me to do was an order, rather than a request. To those I don’t know that contacted me, I offer a tip - if you want to be taken seriously, a private message on Facebook explaining why I ‘must’ do something, or ‘need’ to help, isn’t the way to go. Since moving to Marbella, I befriended a guy called Jesus. We met one very hot day last year, when he was sheltering under a tree from the sweltering afternoon sun. We spoke, and he explained he was living rough. He wouldn’t accept any money, the offer of a beer, or anything at all. Days later, I spotted him again, and decided that perhaps he would feel better about things if I just dropped a small bag of groceries with him, and left it at that. So, that’s what I did. I selected some basic stuff - bread, water, cheese and fruit. I also picked up a toothbrush, toothpaste and hand wipes. He stood up and hugged me. There on a quiet street in Marbella, two strangers became friends, and have remained friends. We catch up during the week and have a coffee. He makes sure I’m okay, and I do the same for him. Of course, lockdown meant we weren’t able to see each other so much. I must say, I missed his wit and his company. I hadn’t seen him in almost a month,

KINDNESS: Requires nothing in return. and I worried for him. Then, as I was going to the supermarket, I spotted him, and returned to surprise him with some goodies. We chatted briefly and promised to catch up properly once we can. My friend took a photo from the car, and I posted it to Facebook, as a simple, gentle reminder to be kind. Some people claimed I was looking for attention, while others told me that they do similar things. For many years, I was involved with many charities, sitting on committees to organise glamorous balls and parties. As I sat in the weekly meetings for these events, I lost my mind. Sitting around discussing how to make their event the best. Wasting time drinking Martinis, discussing guest-lists. I’m aware these events raise serious money, but they bore me. I’ve attended so many, and each time it’s the same thing, people hoping to be photographed for Tatler, or whatever publication is present. As if a photo in a glossy magazine is their reward for their charitable efforts. As if the photograph is their round of applause. As for me seeking attention, trust me, I’ve never had any problem getting it. Most of the time for the wrong reasons, but attention is something I’ve become used to. I do what I do, simply because it feels right. As for applause, save it for real heroes, like the frontline staff who have battled on through this sad time. They deserve our applause. In fact, they deserve so much more.

VIEWS FROM THE H Mani Vehtu, Punjabi Palace THE Punjabi Palace have three Indian restaurants in the southern Costa Blanca at Los Montesinos, Quesada, and Cabo Roig. They’ve already got back into business by setting up a home delivery service, and are looking forward to using their terraces to entice customers back as soon as possible. Mani Vehtu is the manager of their Quesada restaurant, which recently celebrated its sixth anniversary. “It has been very difficult for us but we have al-

ready had a great response from our customers,” Mani said. “The good news is that at Quesada we have a very large terrace which normally can cater for around 60 people, so even with the restrictions, when we are allowed to reopen soon, we will be able to create quite an atmosphere outside.” Mani added: “The uncertainty has meant that it has been difficult to plan ahead, as we like to order and prepare food in advance, but at least we now have a timetable.”

Francisca Andreu, Neptuno Mojácar Restaurante y Eventos “ I T h a s b e e n h a rd f o r N e p tuno because we have many employees on contract and we have had to put them on the dole with the assistance, which is never like the salary they receive,” explained Fran. “The good thing is that we opened up for deliveries about two weeks ago, and this is working really well, and means that now we have

people working again. And from Monday we started with takeaways and will need more people to work. “Also good is that on Monday we start opening the terraces and we hope to be able to have many people dining with us. “ We a r e t a k i n g a l l t h e health and hygiene precautions to ensure healthy deliveries and zero contact.”

Valparaiso, 36 years in business He commented “The whole team is already looking forward to the moment when we have our restaurant open again and hopefully you will see everyone healthy and happy again. “There's just so many dynamics to the operation. There are a lot of logistical headaches.” He has emailed all of his customers saying he thinks they could give a much better service if he could add a photo to the profile they hold on regulars. If you want to bec o m e o n e o f t h e Va l paraiso clients send a photo and your contact details to info@valparaisomijas.c om.

IT was in 1984 that brothers Raffaele and Vittorio Morelli opened Valparaiso Restaurant on the road to Mijas Pueblo. Since that time it has become a place to enjoy top Italian food, but the lockdown has seen the restaurant closed and Raffaele just waiting to be able to open again.

Bar Grizzly’s, Calpe

Emerald Isle Targets Monday Return ROBERTO NOBBE of Bar Grizzly’s in Calpe told Euro Weekly News that they plan to reopen on May 11, providing things stay as they are. “If everything goes well, we will open on May 11. We are lucky because of the layout of Bar Grizzly’s, we can use inside and out. But it’s not going to be easy because we can only serve 50 per cent of our clients “We are still making plans and in talks with our lawyers, things are changing every day. These are very difficult times for all businesses, and we are fortunate as we are one of the larger ones. We really look forward to opening up and seeing our customers again.”

THE Emerald Isle on the Orihuela Costa at La Florida is a large complex serving traditional food for all ages, as well as having masses of outdoor space with a giant swimming pool at the centre. It’s also been the ‘go to’ venue for live entertainment, featuring many top performers from the Costa Blanca and the UK. The good news is that the Emerald Isle is planning to reopen to serve drinks this com-

ing Monday (May 11), according to owner Gerald Moran. “I want to be back in busi-

ness as soon as possible,” said Gerald. “I have to make sure that we follow all the rules of social distancing and have been in touch with the Orihuela Local Police to get things totally clear. “I also need the clarity to see how many staff members I can take back on during the different phases of reopening, which will also give me some idea of the amount of stock I need to order.”

HOSPITALITY SECTOR Black Flame Bar, Grill and Carvery, Pedregeur

La Sala will reopen soon ONE of the landmarks of dining and entertainment in Banus is La Sala and Chairman of the Group, Ian Radford shared some of his plans for the easing of the State of Alarm lockdown after his first team meeting to discuss the future. Now that the gover nment has indicated that in Phase 1 terraces can be open with 50 per cent capacity, things are easier for the Sala directors and they have decided on the following plan (subject of course to amendment); The Havana 65 Cocktail Bar in the Av Marques del Duero in San Pedro will open for drinks only on May 11. La Sala Banus will open for food and drinks on May 15 as will Villa Toscana just across the road. La Sala by the Beach which relies more heavily on tourist visits will probably open towards the end of May, possibly for weekends initially. Reservations will be required and to keep up-to-date, visit the Sala Group website as the company gears itself to make September the new May.

The company is committed to ensure that staff and customers will be well looked after and receiving certificates confirming that the premises are Covid-19 free they comply with all health and safety requirements to ensure that things stay that way.

Stephen Hollings co-owner of the Cornish Pride cafe in Albox “I SEE difficult times for small businesses like ours,” Stephen commented. “It has not been an easy time trying to get Social Security assistance, and the astronomically high ‘autonomo’ payments are still being taken out of our bank, despite being told they would be frozen.” Commenting on the Phase One provision which allows cafes like Cornish Pride to serve customers only on outside spaces, and then at just 50 per cent of capacity,

Stephen said “our business is going to be severely affected. “We have just six outside tables so can o n l y s e r v e t h r e e ! B y the time we have paid all the outgoings we will be lucky to break even. Luckily we can offer a full takeaway service so we hope that might help us through this extremely difficult period.”

El Barril in Denia

BLACK FLAME Bar, Grill and Carvery won’t be opening its doors on May 11. Heidi and Sam are going to wait a couple of weeks longer, concerned that being able to serve only 50 per cent of their outside tables will not be viable. “We’re not opening until at least May 25, it’s not worth it,” said Heidi, pointing out the rules are still not clear with regards to the distance between tables for example. “We won’t be able to offer our carvery, as you can only serve to the table. Social security payments alone cost thousands a month, and then there is autonomo. “We are in regular contact with customers, and most of them do not want to leave the house just yet, so we would rather wait a couple of weeks.”

FOR El Barril German restaurant in Las Marinas, Denia, it still a little too early to say for sure exactly what date they plan to start serving customers once again, but it will hopefully be within the next three weeks. Ilona said: “At the moment we do not know for sure, but it won’t be May 11. We are talking to our lawyers next week and I think it is going to be more likely to be May 15 when we reopen. “We need to have a lot more information about things like exactly how many tables we can serve and how. Things are complicated and there is a lot to sort out but we look forward to opening.”

Jemma Wilson, Rosie Lees cafe-bar and teashop in Turre “IT has been a scary place to be,” Turre’s Rosie Lees cafe-bar and teashop owner Jemma Wilson told EWN. Jemma said the impact of having to close her business’s doors and all the uncertainty about how long it would be before she could open up shop again and under what conditions, as well as with the correct safety measures in place, has been an enormous worry. Not only has she had all the concerns as a cafe owner of having to

deal with a crisis which completely paralysed all business, she also feels responsibility for her staff and for her customers, stressing “I don’t want to compromise their safety.” As for what will happen to her business this month and next, Jemma says “it is very much going to depend on the government’s approach to lifting the lockdown and the additional support available through the de-escalation, especially from the staff perspective and the impact on them.”

CONSTRUCTION CRITICISM DEAR Euro Weekly News, I went food shopping to Aldi in La Cala this morning, and I could not believe my eyes. Five construction workmen came into Aldi without masks or gloves and walked around the store rubbing shoulders with each other, picking up food and putting back on the shelves with no gloves on. At the checkout, they were again shoulder to shoulder paying at the till and the Aldi assistant said nothing to them. On leaving the store and going to my car I looked across the road at the construction site and again was surprised to see workmen together, no masks, no gloves. Is this the Spanish government putting economy before life!! Yours in need of a good cuppa. Kind Regards, Jayne Jenna, Costa Mijas.

Eureka moment Dear Euro Weekly, I must take issue with Leapy Lea in his rant against the Labour Party questioning whether the Tories have an exit strategy for getting the UK out of lockdown and painting a more than rosy picture that the Tories have done a wonderful job in protecting the public

OUR VIEW Silver linings

THE idea that the Coronavirus pandemic might have some upsides that could help us live better lives seems guilt-ridden in the face of the destruction and death it has caused. Domestic violence is up, workers are sleeping rough on the streets, and poor families are experiencing a lack of basic needs. Yet in the dark times, there has been some hope. For some of those fortunate enough to have a safe and secure home environment that they can work from, the lockdown has had some unexpected silver linings. Some people with mental health conditions have reported feeling much better since the lockdown started. For those without an underlying mental health diagnosis, the simple factors of more time to sleep, more time with pets and loved ones and not having to deal with the overstimulation of life, have led to a greater sense of general well-being. Results of surveys of over 74,000 people have shown that well-being has risen over the last few weeks, and anxiety levels have fallen for both people with and without existing mental health disorders. While the trend may yet change as the lockdown continues, and absolute levels of anxiety are higher for people with mental illness than for those without, the findings are intriguing. People who are driven by keeping up appearances, productivity, achievement and being there for everyone have found themselves chilling out, landing in a feeling of relief at not having to put on a performance. We have a precious opportunity to think about the ways in which a ‘normal’ life can make people anxious and ill. If we can change the arrangement of the post-pandemic world to prioritise compassion, pay people decently, value essential workers, and to fund our public services properly, perhaps we can hang on to this silver lining.

against the virus. I have little time for right-wing or left-wing politics, but Labour has been doing nothing more than ask what the general public, those who run shops, have offices and whose jobs are at stake have been doing - and that is what the government see as the way out of lockdown. No doubt this week we will begin to get some answers. As for Leapy Lea’s praise for the Tories - may I remind him that in January and the beginning of February the government did nothing - and I am sure ministers were still fixated with Brexit, as they have been for three years. During the six weeks, they could have put strict controls on our borders to keep the virus out, ordered masses of PPE and started to gear the NHS for the emergency to come. And when they did realise they had to do something they ordered a weak lockdown, nothing like we have endured in Spain and we are now seeing, day after day, the highest new infections and deaths in Europe. For 10 years the Tories ran down the NHS and care homes. Boris needed the NHS to save his life and he had a eureka moment in realising its importance and immigrant nurses who care for him and who his extreme right-wingers in his government would like to see jump through hoops to work in the UK. I will, however, applaud Leapy for his comments about the role religion has played in the spread of the virus. In the Far East, both Muslims and Christians had mass religious assemblies around January and many caught the virus. Muslims went back to Iran where there is a practice of touring shrines and kissing them and Roman Catholics returned to Italy to resume kissing the marble stone of the Madonna in churches and share Communion chalices. You can just imagine how many of the ‘faithful’ were infected and went on to infect others. Then there was a Spain v Italy football match in Milan... the rest is history. Goodness me, why isn’t Piers our Prime Minister? He would have sorted this pandemic out singlehandedly, without loss of life and strain on the NHS. He really should stand to be an MP, oust the PM and all the cabinet, and run the country himself as it’s so easy. At least it would get rid of seeing him on TV every day,

What a lot of Babel!

MARBELLA MOMENTS BY NICOLE KING EVEN when talking the same language it’s frequently hard to make oneself understood which is what makes the new television show ‘Marbella Babel’ so very much fun. The show is hosted by Enrique Moreno, usually presenting sports on RTV Marbella, but due to the current situation and a great idea, he is now guiding us through basic touristic phrases, in Spanish, French, Italian, English, German and Chinese. It’s an exceedingly fun show and hopefully, thanks to the intense repetition, or attempts at repetition, a few words will sink in. Us Brits aren’t renowned for our language skills; I’m not sure if it’s due to lack of inherent ability or lack of intent, but for those who do like to dabble or would like to try, this show is for you! If you just want to laugh at our ridiculous attempts, particularly when it comes to the German and Chinese, likewise. Each Friday evening at 10pm on RTV

Marbella Babel - Fridays at 10pm on RTV Marbella, also available online - www.rtvmarbella.tv. Marbella tune in for a new instalment. So far we’ve recorded five episodes and each one is funnier than the previous as we get more ambitious and the phrases get more involved. Ana María Taburni is Italian and has been living in Marbella for just over a year and makes speaking the language sound absolutely delicious! Marie Van der Gucht of Unique Marbella, together with her baby Lola, are

teaching us French and it’s quite adorable to hear her French accent regardless of the language; who doesn’t love the French accent? Sam Ho, of Sam Ho photography is in charge of the Chinese - Mandarin Chinese which provides for much amusement and possibly more than one insult as the rest of us try and copy what he says. The emphasis and sound of each letter can change the meaning dynami-

cally as I understand it so our pronunciation on some occasions could be quite offensive and also can sound quite ‘naughty’ in English. Dietmar Förster, presenter of the German language radio show ‘INFOMAGAZIN’ on 107.6 fm RTV Marbella is in charge of the German, which I have to say, is as hard as the Chinese and equally hysterical. Our host, Enrique, makes for the final cherry on the top. Self-professed as being inept at speaking languages his efforts are all the more endearing and undeniably entertaining. As of week two we also have all the phrases written on the screen to help identify what was originally being said in each language as we realised quite early on, if you have to rely on our interpretations, we might laugh a lot but might not learn much. We all hope you join us and we’d love to have your feedback, if it’s positive! If you’d like to take part in the show feel free to record yourself joining in with the phrases and send it to us and we might just include them in a programme!

www.nicoleking.es • www.zerohero.es CONSULAR MATTERS THIS is the title of one of the books written by the a u t h o r G a b r i e l G a rc í a Márquez who won the Nobel Prize for Literature. It is one of the best books that I have read and it reminds me of those endless summer afternoons sitting on the sand at the beach watching the evening fall. I read it when I was still at university studying the last year of my Law degree and I never thought that I would experience a situation that would come anywhere near the epidemic situation in which part of the story of the characters in the book unfolds. And that is why my consular history of recent weeks can be titled alluding to the title of the book by my beloved Colombian writer ‘Collaboration in the times of the Coronavirus.’ The law firm that I run here on the Costa Del Sol ‘Just

CONSULAR CORPS OF MALAGA: The members have all worked with each other. Law Spanish Solicitors’ has been prepared for teleworking and online services for a long time, this is an essential service to society, we lawyers cannot stop our activity, but for a week before the State of Alarm was decreed we had already prepared the Danish Consulate in Malaga, to whose team I dedicated my column last month to face the coronavirus challenge. I take this opportunity to convey to my

readers my satisfaction because having counted the hours spent and the issues resolved in our Consulate, we have been able to effectively deal with the greatest workload that a Danish consulate has ever had in Spain. Today we have to thank the collaboration, camaraderie and friendship of my colleagues from the Consular Corps of Malaga. The Consular Corps of Malaga is made up of 42 countries and

each of them has had its own circumstances and problems to face in order to attend to and resolve the different problems of its citizens. During the coronavirus alarm, the members of the Consular Corps of Malaga have all worked with each other. We have been generous and have worked tirelessly to give support to each other. We have shared problems, interpretations of the measures

adopted, legal news, contact with authorities and any other issues that may have served to help another colleague to solve in the most effective and accurate way the problems which faced the citizens repented by myself and other Consuls. Diplomacy is almost always identified with protocol acts and social and cultural activities, but what underlies it is a dedication to work at critical moments. In fact, that is the foundation of our existence, to be prepared so that in cases of extreme urgency or need we are the link between our citizens and the countries we represent. Today my applause at 8.00pm goes to all the health personnel who have proven to be brave and altruistic, as well as the rest of the groups that make it possible for us to continue having our essential needs covered, and also to my colleagues in the Consular Corps of Malaga.

Diary of a quarantined hack

BARRY DUKE MONDAY: Woke with a throbbing pain in a big toe. Gout. ‘Uhhhh. This is not good’ I tell Fifi, curled up beside me. Pooch gives me a look that says ‘man up, you big girl’s blouse. Pain’s good. It’s nature’s way of saying you’re not dead.’ I extract a pellet of Compy Supreme lodged between my butt cheeks. Fifi really must learn to stop bringing her dinner into bed. I begin scouring religious websites in search of material for my Freethinker blog. Find an item about a half-witted priest - he looks all of 12 warning people not to ‘idolise’ the NHS. He wants folk to tell MPs that churches must reopen in the midst of the pandemic. I take my blood pressure. Much higher than normal. Reports like these enrage me. Glance into the mirror be-

MASKED UP: I must look for a sexier protective mask.

fore I leave home in search of a pharmacy for gout medication. With a mask and dark glasses I look like the Invisible Man. Must search online for a sexier protective mask, preferably one crafted in black leather. Nearest pharmacy shut, so I have to embark on a marathon trek to find one

that’s open. Limp home 90 minutes later after clocking up 6,666 steps. Not used to wearing boots. Feet are torturing me. Tuesday: Gout’s eased. Work for eight hours then go online in search of a fashionable mask. No luck. All the cute ones are designed for kids. But I find one site that sug-

gests that, post-lockdown, millions will continue wearing face coverings, and fashion houses are gearing up to meet the demand. One company that makes chic protective scarves like the one pictured is Polish company Lekko. Wednesday: What joy! Discover that six Miracle of Peru seeds planted on April 7 have sprouted. Years ago I rescued a half-dead plant placed near a dumpster. I nurtured it back to life. It gave thanks by producing shed-loads of seeds, and each summer we’ve been enjoying the fragrant flowers its offspring have been producing. Thursday: Make my first cottage pie in years. Husband Marcus’ eyes light up. ‘Proper nosh for a change,’ he exclaims, and wolfs down a huge helping. In case you’re wondering, no, I don’t serve him Compy Supreme on other days. Friday: The coin-like lithium batteries that power my Inter-

net banking card reader have given up the ghost. Have no idea where to buy replacements during lockdown. While I can get around the problem by entering a variety of passwords and codes to access my account, I won’t be able to turn on the TV if the batteries in the remote die. Saturday: Boredom drives me to tidy up my tool box. I heft the electric drill and wonder whether anything in the apartment demands a hole. I resist the temptation to hold it against my skull to end my quarantine misery. Sunday: Discover a book I haven’t read in years. ‘The Atheist’s Bible’ which has a quote from burlesque queen Gypsy Rose Lee that’s particularly apt during this pandemic: ‘Praying is like a rocking chair it’ll give you something to do but it won’t get you anywhere.’ The world would be a saner place if we had more people like her.

FRANKLY SPEAKING

BY JULIE FRANK

I’M following on from my article last week about my Autism and my experience with education. This wasn’t really the direction I intended to go with writing. But after some thought, I’ve decided to continue some more. As I explained, I spent my childhood and early adulthood as undiagnosed. It was a struggle and my mental health suffered a lot in my teens. But now I know what’s ‘wrong’ with me, I feel comfy in my own skin. I no longer do the ‘masking’ I described (acting, to fit in). I’m almost back to the free-spirited person I was as a young child. If I could say anything to anyone out there who suspects they have Autism, I’d say - don’t mask, it’s exhausting. I think you only make yourself look odder because it’s not natural. Just be you and if others don’t like it it’s their problem, not yours. I mostly covered my youth last week. So now to post-diagnosis and living as an expat (or immigrant, as I prefer to call myself) in Spain...

VIVA ESPAÑA!

My husband, child and I moved here a few years ago, not long after m y d i a g n o s i s . We h a v e e x t e n d e d family here and had been many times before. The place wasn’t alien to me, so I settled in quite easily. If anything, I find Spain a better place to live. I do miss my friends and family from back home. I miss the security of the same house we lived in for 16 years too. But, I don’t think British culture is an ideal environment for those of us on the spectrum. Autistics tend to be very quiet, or very loud. From a personal perspective, I’d say it depends on if we feel comfortable or not. When I’m at ease with people and a place, I’m very expressive. I get engrossed in certain topics and I can be quite animated! In British restaurants I’ve often been told by my husband I’m being too loud. Or I notice the person at the next table grinning, sometimes trying to join in the conversation! It makes me self-conscious, so I tend to go back into my cocoon. In Spain, it’s different. There’s none

FESTIVALS: Gosh, I do love Spain. of the table etiquette that I find odd. People eat their food as they wish.

They’re loud and expressive at the t a b l e t o o . Yo u o f t e n w a l k i n t o a Spanish restaurant to a wall of noise. Each table is engrossed in their own conversations, happy and loud. No one from the next table listens in either, they’re too busy at their own table. There’s the festivals too. From what I described last week and the claustrophobia I get in busy places, you’d think I wouldn’t like them, but I love them. I’m fine with crowds when there’s music, the tinto de verano helps too! The festivals are so inclusive. Old and young up dancing. There’s none of the judgementalism or snobbery that can exist in British culture. So, I feel at ease with not having to conform. That’s just two examples, there’s many more. Gosh, I do love Spain. It’s making me sad writing about the culture, because we’re still on lockdown and I miss it. I think I’ll appreciate these things so much more when we get them back. My silly hang-ups might seem even less prevalent too!

TIME OUT Cartoon by Audrey Quinton www.audreyq.co.uk

YOUR STARS FOR NEXT 7 DAYS ARIES (March 21 - April 20) For the Aries sign, this may be quite a mixed week. Businessmen might be frustrated owing to the slow pace of getting results. However, they would do well to remain calm, as getting frustrated doesn't help anyone. If you are an undergraduate student, this may be a good week.

TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) If you are a businessman, this period may test your patience. Do display perseverance, and do not let slow progress bring you down. Employees working day jobs may face a time shortage, and may be pushed to show more results. This period may be good for students, as stars show that memory and learning power of learners may be sharp.

GEMINI (May 22 - June 21) For Gemini entrepreneurs, this may be a tough time, with reducing sales and increasing competitors. Businessmen may need to think quick in order to manage any situation. They may also need to look out for new avenues, and grow sales. People who are working day jobs may desire a promotion and a salary hike.

CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Cancerian businessmen during this period may face some issues when it comes to timely delivery of their orders. They might need to explain this issue to their high net worth customers. Salaried people need to step up their productivity as their job may be under stress.

LIBRA (September 24 - October 23) For Libran, this week might be a lucrative time as they might be delighted with their financial gains. They might strike a deal that might boost them, and take them from strength to greater strength, financially. Employees might find themselves under tremendous pressure to perform and live up to the high expectations of their employers.

SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22) One might do well to keep their pride, and not compromise on ethics to achieve monetary gain. Salaried individuals might see some delay in the fulfilment of their efforts. They might do well not to let this demoralise them. Students in graduate courses might get distracted by social activities.

CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) A planned move might see your income rise. Household expenses too may rise, but that might not be a problem. On the romantic front, you may want to take your relationship to the next level, and this might be the perfect time to do so. If you enter a new bond, do not be overly reliant on the other person.

EURO WEEKLY NEWS spoke exclusively to Torremolinos resident Neal To plis who re cently recovered from the Coronavirus. Neal is a funeral director and it would be easy to assume that his work may have been the place where he caught the virus but due to the nature of his job he regularly wears PPE, gloves and masks. “I woke up after staying up late one night, I felt hungover but had not drunk. Positive mental attitude THERE is evidence that adopting a positive attitude towards life brings happiness, reduces stress levels and improves health. Habits for a positive mindset: Daily physical exercise is one of the most important factors to maintain a healthy mind. Studies show that exercise reduces stress and anxiety levels, increases energy, motivation and self-esteem. One of the habits to prevent negativity is to make positive affirma-

POSITIVE AFFIRMATION: Happy thoughts that motivate you. tions to yourself. Each day you have hundreds of thoughts and some can be negative, to counter these create a list of five positive affirmations that motivate you and practice them every day. Studies indicate that gratitude increases satisfaction and improves relationships. Being grateful for what you have, from the greatest

achievements to the smallest details, will help you to value many aspects of your life. Breathing exercises are healthy and beneficial to relax the nervous system and calm mental noise. Exercising contemplation through meditation helps you focus on the moment and see things from a different perspective.

I DISSOCIATE when everything becomes too much. I separate from the world. My brain and mind walks away from each other. What Is Dissociation? Dissociation is, ‘the separation of a group of mental processes or ideas from the rest of the personality, so that they lead an independent existence, as in cases of multiple personality.’ For example, have you ever driven to work and not remembered in the slightest the drive to work? It’s quite possible to write a shopping list in your head while considering all the emails you have to reply to and reminding yourself of your child’s school activities all on your drive. In fact, it’s easy to do all of this and not remember in the slightest your actual drive to work. This is a mild form of dissociation which anyone can experience. When I dissociate because of my bipolar disorder, my consciousness separates from the brain that feels the suffering. When I can’t take the suffering, my mind knows how to do it. For me, it often starts out as an extreme form of distraction from the negative thoughts. I simply think of anything that is unemotional. I do things that are unemotional. I can get through a whole day and not actually remember what happened, I simply just get through it. Over the years, I have succeeded

in tuning out just about the whole world around me. Engage me in a conversation, and sooner or later you will pick up an odd mannerism: My eyes glaze over, I’m unresponsive. I am not present. Literally I am somewhere else. I can hear you speak but I simply cannot listen to the conversation. When the pain becomes too much, I admit to myself that I am suffering, know that it will end, I just push it to the side and sometimes when I do this, I’m alive and I know I’m alive but it doesn’t feel the same as being alive. (That makes per fect sense in my head!!) It’s like looking at everything from far away or through a fog. It’s not what I would call pleasant but it is an escape from the pain - momentarily, anyway. Of course, the pain is just waiting for me once I emerge from the fog. Nevertheless, while dissociation is temporary it can prevent me from taking more per manent steps to end my suffering. Because, after all, when I wake up the next day, I likely won’t feel as wor n out and dragged down. And when I’m back to that state - not in as much pain as before - I appreciate not having taken more permanent action or decisions. I’m not saying it’s right for everyone and certainly too much of it or it being uncontrolled can be bad, I’m just saying it works for me. Have you ever experienced disassociation? IT’S OK TO NOT BE OK JUST DON’T STAY THERE FOR LONG!

DIONE LOCKYER YOU will see so many ‘gurus’ telling you that you should be happy all day ever y day. As a therapist that is known as the REAL, RAW AND HONEST MINDSET MENTOR, there are quite a few choice words I could use, but as this is a respectable newspaper I’ll just say... what a crock of cr*p! There will be days when getting out of bed feels like a mission, when the last thing you want to do is smile. Worry takes over, you feel just... mergh and there’s nothing anyone can say or do to change that. When this happens, do not and I repeat DO NOT put further pressure on yourself! Allow yourself to feel however you want. If you want to cry for absolutely no reason, cry! If you want to scream at the

DAILY CHALLENGES: Take one small step every day. top of your voice to release then scream. If you want to sit in front of the TV and watch rom coms all day, DO IT! It is more than ok to have those off days. Those off

days are the days that actually help us grow. They actually teach us what we don’t want in life, they actually teach us that in order to feel better, we have to think differently.

They show us who and what we want to be or do. They teach us that bad days are not the end of the world as long as we don’t stay there for too long. As a woman who suffered with depression, those off days were frequent. I would wallow around in self-pity for weeks on end, questioning who I was, what I was supposed to be doing, who I was meant to be. The more pressure I put on myself for feeling low, the lower it made me feel, the more depressed I became. It was a vicious circle! When I started studying Anxiety Management and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, I taught myself to release the pressure. If I had a day where I felt low or depressed but still got through that day that was something to celebrate right? I’d managed to

get through the day and to me that was all that mattered. I decided to give myself small, daily challenges to help me overcome the depressed state I was in, they were as follows: I got through today therefore; my challenge for tomorrow is to smile at least once. When i succeeded, it encouraged me to do more... I managed to smile twice today therefore, tomorrow my challenge is I’m going to do my hair and make-up to m a k e m y s e l f f e e l b e t t e r. Again, it was achieved. One small step every day has turned me into the proud, confident and positive Therapist that I am today. If you want to learn these techniques with a free threeday challenge, email coach ingwithdione@gmail.com.

If you would like to dig a little deeper into your own thoughts, feelings and behaviours or you would like to complete one of my courses to live a happy and healthy life with yourself, please email me coachingwithdione@gmail.com.

Face workout

HEALTHY FACE GLOW: Can be achieved by face exercising.

YOUR face has over 50 different muscles and they are rarely used, unlike other muscles in the body. By exercising face muscles blood circulation activates in different areas of the face, replenishing the oxy-

gen supply in skin and muscles. This helps to achieve a bright and healthy glow. Exercising the face will keep facial muscles fit for the long term. Facial muscle exercises improve blood flow and supplies skin

with nutrients and prevents wrinkles. In order to achieve results quickly, it is recommended to exercise the face three to five times a week for around 20 minutes. Results should be visible within two months.

DURING lockdown, classical music lovers have been lucky enough to enjoy a real feast of top music and opera from around the world free of charge and it’s still going on. The Metropolitan Opera of New York broadcasts a daily opera from its archives which can be accessed through the MetOpera Facebook page but visit first to see the timings. The Budapest Festival Orchestra is streaming a selection of classical works by composers such as Bartok at 10am on May 9 through their website. Another good site to visit is the London Symphony Orchestra which presents two free archive concerts each week, one on Sunday and one on

Thursday with the next two being Shostakovich on May 7 at 8.30pm Spanish time and Romeo and Juliet by Berlioz at 8pm on Sunday May 10. These and future concerts can be viewed on the LSO YouTube channel also free of charge. Another option is the Our House to your House Friday night performances of opera or ballet from the Royal Opera House in London and although free, viewers are encouraged to make a donation if they enjoyed the presentation. Their next Facebook premieres will be the opera La Traviata on Friday May 8 at 8pm Spanish time and the ballet Anastasia on May 15.

I didn’t make the list... at all! MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I watch a lot of news in light of what’s going on in the world and have started making comparisons. The daily update in the UK by the government seems to be dignified, professional, well organised and to the point. The experts have their say then the press ask a few questions and the panel answer them the best they can. I’m not saying that some questions asked are not swerved but the experts all seem to be allowed to give what appears to be factual information. I watch Merkel talk about the German situation - she seems very much on top of the crisis and talks with authority and even Macron looks like he’s doing a good job. Then I turn over and watch the scariest one of them all - the daily Trump show. OMG! This buffoon stands there talking absolute garbage rambling on about the most ridiculous things like using disinfectant as a medicine. He tried to defend his remarks by saying they were sarcastic. I watched the experts squirm-

ing as he said it then he tried to deny it. He contradicts himself, his experts, the WHO and the Governors of many states. I then watch what else is being said in the USA by the Governors of the different states but what happens is I actually don’t take in what they are saying, not because I’m not listening, but because I’m totally distracted by the wonderful ASL interpreters that stand at one side. Whenever I see someone doing sign language I remember a YouTube clip with someone signing at a rap concert and the audience seemed to be taking more notice of her than the artist. Is it just me? I’m fascinated by it. It’s fantastic they do that in the USA but rarely see it elsewhere. https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=A2lmzL0QOWw Have a look at this and you will see what I mean. This, of course, doesn’t make me grumpy but to be honest I don’t give a monkey’s at the moment. In closing we are no longer spending ‘quality’ time with our loved ones. We are just spending time! In a recent survey in the Senker household, when asked the top 50 people Mrs S would like to spend lockdown with, in a surprising result I didn’t make the list... at all!

This week Celebrity Chef & Fellow Master Chef Steven Saunders, proprietor of The Little Geranium cooks Asian style salmon in paper using superfood ingredients.

Chef Steven’s Super tasty, super foods Steven Saunders FMCGB The Little Geranium La Cala de Mijas www.thelittlegeranium.com

WHAT are superfoods? They seem to be ever ywhere these days. They’re said to ward off cancer, help with weight loss, extend your life, and even whiten your teeth. But do these ‘miracle’ foods really live up to all the hype? I investigated and have come up with a list of positives, a list of maybes and a list of myths. First though let’s look at some of the myths. Some of my super fit friends live and die by some of these so called super foods like coconut oil and apple cider vinegar. So I explored, read everything there is to read, spoke with a few specialists and came up

with these conclusions! Coconut oil, the hype: Almost three-quarters of people in a recent survey said they thought coconut oil was healthy. No doubt that’s because of claims that it protects against heart disease, arthritis, Alzheimer’s and diabetes, while also helping you lose weight, thanks to a particular kind of fat that your body may metabolise differently than others. The reality: The American Heart Association (AHA) issued a recent statement that recommended against using coconut oil. Why? Because it contains a high level (82 per cent) of bad for you saturated fat. Multiple studies confirm that coconut oil actually raises ‘bad’ cholesterol. The AHA say, If you do go for coconut oil (we know it tastes good), practise extreme moderation! Apple Cider Vinegar, the hype: Claims that apple cider vinegar can whiten your teeth, lower blood sugar, fight infection, keeps heart disease and

cancer at bay and more. The reality: Apple cider vinegar may lower blood sugar, but so do other kinds of vinegar. It’s not clear if apple cider vinegar has any use against cancer and heart disease as none of the experiments are conclusive. As for your teeth, not only will vinegar not lead to pearly whites, it can also erode the enamel! Apple cider vinegar is a good addition to use as a dressing or in a sauce, but don’t consider it a potential cure for health woes. Butter: It’s confusing… It has been on the bad list then the good list for some time. So what is it, healthy or unhealthy? The hype: Is that butter is actually good for you and we should eat more. The reality: It is like saying that eating pure saturated fat is good for your health! You may as well eat all Mary Berry’s cakes. You wish! The current science tells us to replace saturated fats with unsaturated fats (think olive oil). If butter has a role, it may be just

Norwegian Salmon dressed and ready to cook. to make things taste better and as a chef I love butter, so I don’t want to avoid it, but eat it in moderation. Six of the Best Superfoods! 1. Leafy greens like Bok Choy, Broccoli and kale. A small amount of this type of veggie contains more than half your day’s vitamin C and vitamin A. 2. Salmon is packed with omega-3 and vitamin B12 in

addition to an antioxidant called selenium which strengthens the immune system selenium. All linked to neurological health. 3. Mushrooms are my special superfood… They’re fatfree, low-sodium, low-calorie, and cholesterol-free... they contain vitamin B C and D and selenium. 4. Garlic contains vitamins C and B6, selenium and other antioxidants. More recent research suggests garlic may be effective against high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, cholesterol and some cancers. 5. Tomatoes are a superfood because they’re very high in lycopene, and lycopene is a mineral that’s been proven to reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer. 6. Citrus fruits and berries are super foods especially lemons… they have large amounts of vitamin C, nutrients, minerals, antioxidants and very few calories.

Aromatic Asian Salmon en Papillote Ingredients (serves two) EN papillote is French and means in paper but we are doing it in tin foil because we are cooking it on the barbecue! This way of cooking is easy and effective as the fish is literally steamed in all the juices in the parcel. Tin foil 2 good quality Norwegian salmon fillets (approximately 120g each) 1 tomato sliced so that you have four slices 1 clove of garlic finely chopped 1 spring onion finely sliced 50ml of sake or dry white wine A little olive oil 1 lemon zested (you need to keep the zest)

1 pak or bok choy Maldon salt and freshly milled black pepper 2 tablespoons natural soy sauce 1/2 teaspoon of sesame oil A sprinkling of toasted peanuts or cashews crushed 1 teaspoon of chopped red chilli (seeds removed) 125g of mushrooms washed and fried to give them a little colour Fresh coriander sprigs (or parsley) to finish Method 1. Mix the sake (or wine), chilli, soy sauce, garlic, sesame oil and the juice of one lemon together with a little olive oil. 2. Make two 30 cm squares with the tin foil. Place the slices

of tomato in the centre and top with sliced mushrooms. Add the onion sliced. 3. Now top with one salmon fillet and season it well. Repeat for the other parcel. 4. Finally top the salmon with the lemon zest and season with salt and pepper and pour the wine/ chilli mix in step 1, over each salmon fillet equally. 5. Fold up the tin foil parcel so that the juices do not escape (see photo). 6. Steam the parcels on a metal tray on a hot barbecue for 10 minutes. Open the bags carefully to check that the salmon is cooked. Serve with lightly cooked or steamed pak choy or broccoli on the side. 7. Finish with crushed peanuts and sprigs of corian-

der or parsley optional. 8. Enjoy your meal knowing that you have just eaten the world’s finest superfoods… all in one go!

TESTIMONIAL Hi everybody at EWN Doggie Angells would like to thank you all for your help over the last year. We have had a great deal of success with rehoming our dogs. Sometimes dogs can be with us for long periods. It’s funny when they are adopted people often say we have been looking at this dog in the paper week after week and we kept wanting to adopt him but the time was just not right. He's still in the paper and we are now ready to have him. So that is great - patience pays off. Again thank you all, we very much appreciate all what you do for our charity. Things slow up for us in August, thank goodness it gives us time to catch up. Kind regards Denise and all at Doggie Angells.

TESTIMONIAL Egil: From my earlier visits in Marbella I always look forward to pick up the EWN every week to get the latest news on Costa del Sol.

ACE CHARITY ‘El Refugio’ in La Cala de Mijas is a registered charity. We have on average 275 dogs in our care and we receive no help from the Town Hall or the Andalucian government. We desperately need foster homes and adoptants for our many dogs, especially the small ones and puppies who do not do well in a big shelter. We are grateful for any help offered, including donations of food and blankets. Visiting times are from 13.00 to 15.00 and you can always turn

SEPE the horse and donkey charity is open to the public at weekends from 10.00 to 5.00. Volunteers are much needed in all departments and are welcome at any time. For our riding for the disabled classes, we are also in need of extra helpers. We are nationally registered by the Spanish Ministry of the Interior (164640) but only with your support can we give the equine a voice. If you can just commit to 2 or 3 euros a month it will really help make a difference. You can find us at Lauro Golf Equestrian Centre, Alqueria, Alhaurin de la Torre. Tel. 608 258 950 info@sepeonline.net www.sepeonline.net (93321) SOS ANIMAL REFUGE we have dogs, young and old looking for homes. Some of our dogs have been with us for some time and would love to find a cosy spot to curl up in and a knee on which to rest their heads. If you have room in your heart and home we would love to hear from you. We do not put our dogs to sleep - no matter how old, they are safe with us. For day to day needs and to pay for veterinary care, we much appreciate the support we receive. We desperately need items to sell on our market stall to help raise funds and are happy to come and collect. So, if you are having a clear-out, please contact us on 605 227 155. If you would like to know more about re-homing, please call 653 257 875.

You are the champions

DEDICATION: The retitled version is for ‘frontline warriors fighting coronavirus around the world.’ LEGENDARY British rock band Queen and US singer Adam Lambert have released a fundraising lockdown version of the iconic track We are the Champions, with all the proceeds going to the Covid-19 Fund. In a collaboration via Instagram, Brian May, Roger Taylor and Lambert recorded the classic anthem on mobile phones and laptops from their respective homes in London, Cornwall and Los Angeles. The new version is dedicated to ‘frontline warriors fighting coronavirus around the world,’ and has been retitled ‘You are the Champions.’

A post on Queen’s official Facebook page stated that ‘All funds and proceeds from the single will go to supporting the Covid-19 Solidarity Response Fund for the World Health Organisation (WHO) powered by the United Nations Foundation to support frontline health workers.’ In an interview with the BBC, May said they had changed a few words of the lyrics to show they had medical workers in their minds, “It means that we are all applauding you, because you are now the champions. You are the warriors that are saving humanity on this planet.”
