Happy Toby

ELCHE RIO Safari (RSE) is pleased to announce that Toby has adapted well since his arrival.

Toby is a pygmy hippopotamus and came to live at RSE in December 2022, after a specialised road journey from Dvur Kralove Safari Park (Czech Republic), his birth zoo, to the park.

The pygmy hippopotamus is an endangered species, present today in extremely fragmented territories in patches of wetland forest in only four West African countries, namely Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Côte d’Ivoire.

The latest estimates suggest the presence of, at most, 2,000 to 3,000 pygmy hippos in the wild in 2008.
