Mijas goes retro

MORE than 30 drivers put their skills to the test in the first ever Villa de Mijas Classic Car Rally last weekend. This exciting rally took place on Saturday, June 17, giving car lovers and intrigued visitors a look into the flashy world of motorsports.

In an exciting twist, drivers received the course routes just before setting off, with a set speed required by the organisers who held tests at several checkpoints.

Thirty­three vintage cars, with years of history under their hoods, hit the road from Compas on Saturday afternoon. Their route took them through the series of timed checkpoints from Mijas, towards Alhaurin el Grande, Entrerrios, the climb to Mirador del Aguila before regrouping back at Compas.

Later, on the second leg of the rally, drivers navigated through La Alqueria, Camino de Valtocado, and back to Compas, covering a total of 140 kilometres.

Many of the vehicles caught the attention of eager spectators who came out to spot rare makes of vehicles. The elegance of the vehicles and the careful maintenance from their drivers did not go unnoticed. A motorcycle race followed on Sunday, June 18, and also attracted a crowd.
