ALICANTE’S Dr Balmis Hospital is undergoing a surgical programme and is now considered a pioneer in the province for thoracic surgery.

This is thanks to its new Da Vinci robot system. Robotic surgery represents the latest evolution of minimally invasive surgery, after laparoscopy, in which the surgeon does not operate with his hands, but instead manipulates a remote robot from a console installed inside the operating room.

The head of the Thoracic Surgery Service, Doctor Jorge Cerezal, confirmed: “With respect to open surgery, in mini­ mally invasive surgery the patient experiences less pain, fewer complications and blood loss. The hospital stay is reduced and it also offers a better aesthetic result, because it is performed with three or 4 8 mm incisions (compared to 2030 cm for open surgery). All of this has an impact on the patient being able to return to his daily life sooner.” Another advantage of the robot is that it provides three hands to the surgeon who is at the console “because with one manipulator you handle one instrument and with the other, you can control two at the same time.”

AN Elche beach was temporarily closed on Friday, July 14, after it was found to contain contaminants.
