Bienvenido Charlie Mullins

Charlie Mullins OBE, the ‘world’s richest plumber’, has just upped sticks to become a permanent member of the Costa del Sol community.

Born and bred in London, the millionaire ex-plumber’s rags-to-riches story has captured the imagination of millions. Once a Conservative Party donor, he has now lost all hope in the Tories redeeming themselves and feels the Labour government will do even more harm.

The Euro Weekly News spoke with Mr. Mullins in his new home in Marbella. We discussed his work ethic, his thoughts on UK politics, and life in Spain.

Have you moved to Spain yet?‘Yes. I’m splitting my time between Marbella and Dubai. I moved all my assets out of the UK, but I’ve been on the Costa del Sol on and off for 20 years. The UK is heading for disaster. This government are anti-business. They despise wealth creation.’

What would you advise young people today?

‘I would advise youngsters to do an apprenticeship. You can use a trade anywhere in the world and make good money.’

What drives you?‘My drive comes from my father. He had a good work ethic. It used to be seen as disrespectful not to work. Hard

work didn’t do anyone any harm.’

Do you miss Pimlico Plumbers?

‘No. I hear they’re not doing well these days. With my family, we’re setting up Wefix London on October 1, offering the best quality tradespeople.’

Have you called a plumber since you’ve been in

Marbella?‘ Of course. Here in Marbella, there are some second-to-none tradespeople. I would say that these days the quality in Spain is better than in the UK.’

Alan and Jenny Boardman ran a campaign which they called ‘Eyedrop’, whereby people along the Costa del Sol could take old spectacles, pens, pencils, and toothbrushes to nominated drop o points.

The campaign was so popular that over 3,000 donated items were taken to The Gambia, where Alan and Jenny personally handed them out to the poorest children and hospitals.

They were deeply saddened by the level of poverty encountered there, with schools and hospitals seriously underequipped and overcrowded. The doctors and teachers they met were over the moon with the precious gifts donated by the Costa del Sol community.

This year Alan and Jenny are turning their attention to Uganda, another African country with similar issues. They have already sourced

Additionally, the tables were decorated with beautiful oral arrangements kindly supplied and donated by Janne Lassen, Valentin Wedding Flowers. As guests arrived they were welcomed with cava and canapés served by Ludo and his attentive staf. President, Karen Blair gave a

The Eyedrop campaign runs throughout October and November, during which the Costa del Sol community is invited to take along spectacles in any condition, pencils, pens, and toothbrushes (preferably children’s) to any of the venues listed. Alan, Jenny, and a lot of children in Uganda will be forever grateful.

OFFICIALS from Malaga province are in San Diego, USA, negotiating a deal with American Airlines about the possibility of opening up many more ights from the US to Malaga.

Currently, direct ights from New York to Malaga only run from May until October, but given the enormous success of the route, as well as increased interest in Malaga as both a holiday and business destination, American Airlines is considering a far bigger investment in the Costa del Sol destination and even new ights from other US cities starting next year.

The expansion of the tourist market from the US, as well as other current lucrative deals bringing tourists from China, also currently on the table, re ects the Costa del Sol’s focus on seeking out the more nancially bene cial customers in a changing world market.

Also in San Diego is a delegation from Turismo Costa del Sol promoting The Embassy basketball team from the world-class Higuerón Training Centre in Fuengirola, who are taking part in a basketball tournament in the Californian city attended by dozens of scouts from the NBA and the main North American universities.

Back to the Office

OVER the last ten years, employees have demanded more exibility in their working patterns, including the option to work hybrid and full-time from home. However, a recent global survey carried out by KMPG indicates that bosses now want workers back in the o ce.

The hybrid working model, popular with employees and younger talent, isn’t working for the bosses, according to the

international consultancy and accounting rm. The study, a benchmark in the industry for over ten years, quizzes 1,300 company chiefs worldwide on their views of current business trends.

This year’s results show a marked loss of appetite for home working. This is so much so that the majority of the bosses from eleven major global powers, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain,

the UK, the US, and China, reported a willingness to o er sta incentives to lure them back to the o ce. Many were happy to reward sta who made the e ort to be in the oce with favourable assignments, pay rises or even promotions.

A full return to o ce work is gaining popularity among big companies, including Amazon, Boots, Laing O’Rourke, and Rockstar Games. The shift

Workforce boost

FOLLOWING the success of integrating Ukrainian refugees into their workforce, Norway is set to implement new rules to increase their attractiveness to foreign workers. Over 27% of working-age Ukrainians have found employment in Norway, and the government hopes to replicate this success with other foreign workers.

A key component of the new regulations will be the requirement for shorter induction programmes. After three months of induction, foreign workers will be required to engage in at least fteen hours of work-related activities per week. This move is designed to prepare foreigners for the Norwegian labour market more quickly and, in turn, accelerate their contribution to the country’s economy.

towards in-person work is being advocated by those who argue that face-to-face communication fosters more creativity, enhances collaboration, and strengthens company culture in ways that are di cult to replicate online.

The workers themselves have mixed feelings about the return. Various surveys indicate that more than 60% prefer the hybrid or fully remote option.

Furthermore, Norway plans to expand its integration programmes to encompass foreign workers between the ages of 55 and 60. This initiative aims to allow older people to acquire the necessary quali cations to enter the workforce, thereby increasing Norway’s labour pool. Additionally, the programme will be expanded to accommodate individuals seeking formal education, with an extra year added for upper secondary education and vocational training. The recent regulations are designed to address the growing need for foreign workers to have the necessary skills to succeed in the Norwegian economy. Employment and Inclusion Minister Tonje Brenna stressed the importance of creating a exible regulatory framework that can e ectively support foreign workers.

ACCORDING to the Eurofound 2023 report, the EU is still experiencing labour shortages following the strong market recovery after the effects of COVID-19, combined with ongoing demographic trends. As more specialised and higher-paid jobs are found in the cities, this is having a bigger impact here than in the rural areas. Interestingly, research indicates that, on average, only half of urban residents believe that finding a job in their European city is easy. Notably, cities in Spain such as Malaga (21%), Barcelona (24%), and Madrid (24%) fall well below this average. This finding is directly correlated with satisfaction levels, as a higher percentage of individuals perceiving job availability positively are more likely to express satisfaction with urban living.

A faithful gathering Oceanika construction

Adam Woodward TORREMOLINOS is betting on urban regeneration and digital nomads with the construction of the country’s largest wooden apartment blocks.

Margarita del Cid, mayor of Torremolinos, laid the first stone in the construction of Oceanika, a new development in the Los Alamos district. Construction has now begun and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

The design will have 180 apartments, mainly intended for digital nomads, and distributed

over more than 15,000 square meters, and aims to establish itself as a benchmark in sustainability and efficient construction.

As a coliving space, the

construction will offer a new concept of a harmonious living space that will adapt to the needs of modern urban life, with services such as a gym, coworking offices, green areas, at a strategic location close to Malaga airport.

Del Cid described the project as ‘innovative and groundbreaking’, as well as highlighting the fact that it will be the largest coliving facility in the province and the largest wooden construction by volume in all of Spain.

Being built on the old Los Álamos hotel site, which was a landmark at the entrance to Torremolinos, but had become an abandoned eyesore over the years, this project is hoped to become a much needed renovation of the image of the town. According to del Cid, ‘It is, without a doubt, a regeneration, a revolution in many dimensions and facets.

ONE of the most emblematic spots in Mijas Pueblo, is to become a new cultural space. Mijas Town Hall has put the drafting of a series of projects out to tender, including the creation of new cultural space in La Puente, one of the most emblematic corners of Mijas Pueblo. There’s over €20 thousand on the table for someone who can deliver the best proposal in just 90 days.

The tender stipulates that the winning company must be responsible for the proposal and the execution of a refurbishment project of the La Puente structure.

The most characteristic feature of the site is that it is the only vaulted passage where an original and historic building used to be located, and therefore the zone is listed and protected,

Medal of the City

THREE sports stars that made Marbella proud this year have been awarded the Medal of the City.

Mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, presented the last jersey and a medal in recognition of retiring Luis Ángel Maté’s last 17 cycling seasons. In 2024, the Medal of the City has also been awarded to Olympic boxer Ayoud Ghadfa, and retired Olympic taekwondo athlete Elena Benítez.

‘It is a joy that our city can have people with such extensive experience and, above all, that way of being that makes them so wonderful’, said Muñoz at the latest presentation. She wished him all the best in this new stage in his life and stressed that ‘for the City Council there would be nothing better than being able to count on his advice and I hope that there will be many

sports projects that we can work together on in the future.’

Luis Ángel Maté said, ’When this happens in your city, it fills you with even more pride.’ He also confirmed that while no longer a professional cyclist, ‘I will never stop being an ambassador for my hometown.’

Marbella has produced some of the cream of Spanish sporting champions in recent years, including Luis Ángel Maté (cycling), Sarah Almagro (surfer), Jesús Ríos (Motor GP rider), Carla Viegas (basketball player), Juanan Gómez (footballer), Ayoud Ghadf (boxer), and Elena Benítez (taekwondist).

Julian Muñoz Shop & Win

FORMER mayor of Marbella, Julian Muñoz, affectionately known as ‘Cachuli,’ has died at age 76 after being hospitalised for more than fifteen days at the Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella.

The ex-partner of singer Isabel Pantoja had been avoiding the media spotlight for several years and focussing on family life while suffering ill health, diagnosed while serving a prison sentence in Alhaurín de la Torre on corruption charges. He was granted parole in 2021 after a medical diagnosis, which was later revealed in the Spanish press to be cancer.

Muñoz had become one of the most familiar faces in the Spanish press after succeeding the notorious Jesús Gil as mayor of Marbella in 2003. A motion of no confidence involving former associates of Gil cut Muñoz’s tenure in the council short, but the media attention only grew bigger.

The personal life of Julian Muñoz became increasingly a focus for the Paparazzi when his relationship with Isabel Pantoja was revealed. However, their idyllic romance and professional careers were truncated in 2006 during the infamous ‘Operation Malaya’, the biggest corruption scandal in Spanish history. Both Muñoz and Pantoja were eventually sentenced to time in Alhaurín de la Torre prison.

In the final television interview he gave, Julian Muñoz revealed that he was suffering from lung cancer, that diabetes had left him blind in one eye, and that he had had 2 heart attacks, but he was, in essence, happy.

‘BUY locally’ is the message from Marbella City Council with a new campaign that will benefit local shoppers, especially the young.

Marbella has a total of 12,108 businesses, including shops, bars, cafés, and restaurants, the vast majority of them being small or medium-sized companies and freelancers. More and more, these enterprises are coming up against steep competition from massive national and multinational retailers, often located in the biggest shopping centres.

The aim of the campaign is to attract shoppers back to street shopping and to support over 4,000 small shops in the city.

The initiative finishes on Sunday, September 29, involves buying something from one of the 89 participating local shops. Once paid for, the shop assistant will give the buyer a ticket which they should post on their Facebook or Instagram account with the hashtag #tucompratienepremioCCA as well as the name of the shop the product was bought from. The one that receives the most ‘likes’ on social media wins a €100 prize.

In spite of the enormous success of the summer tourist season, Marbella retail outlets noted a drop in sales, something many have put down to the streets being crowded with visitors to the city who were less interested in shopping and more inclined towards enjoying the beaches.

Cultural relations Barrell jellies alert

INTERCULTURAL relations are on the agenda of Benalmadena council who seek to connect the plethora of different nationalities in the town.

Some 160 different nationalities coexist in Benalmadena, and the new initiative is, in part, intended to broaden understanding, empathy and to encourage more integration of non-Spanish residents into the greater community.

‘Tejiendo entendimiento’ (Sewing together understanding), is an initiative that has at its heart the elimination of discrimination, issues of personal health, and community conflict resolution, all the while working to avoid discrimination and marginalisation in the community.

Areas of focus for the council will

primarily be to promote intercultural relations by holding regular meetings with the different social groups in the community on education, health, administration, employment and neighbourhood communities.

Once a week on Wednesdays, there will be a bus pulling up at several points around the town so that local residents can make use of a mediation service and receive help with public administration and other such organisations which might normally be confusing or difficult to deal with, such as tax issues, the police, health services, or neighbourhood conflicts. Details of the bus’s timetable will be released at a future date.

RECENTLY, another enormous jellyfish has been sighted on the beach at Cabopino in Marbella following others along the coast of Manilva, between Cala Sardina in San Roque and Cala del Toro.

The Fundación Aula del Mar Mediterráneo’s Jellyfish Alert app, Infomedusa, reports that over 50 sightings of this little-known species of jellyfish, whose existence some experts had previously questioned, have been reported in recent months.

The abundance of sightings along Andalusia’s coastline this year has convinced the experts. Rhizostoma luteum, the species, has been discovered on beaches in Granada, Almeria, and Malaga. Scientific literature has only noted it six times since it was originally recorded in 1827. While many people consider the giant blob to be repulsively terrifying to look at, it’s not particularly dangerous to humans. Commonly known as ‘barrel jellies,’ this type of je-

llyfish has attracted the interest of marine biologists in recent years due to its ecological significance. In addition, there has been a large increase in the biomass of these creatures due to warming seas. Normally they wouldn’t be seen along the Costa del Sol as they tend to stay out in open seas, but while the sting of this creature may be comparatively slight compared to that of other jellyfish, bathers should be on the lookout for this massive gelatinous mass.

FAKE PITT

A GANG of Brad Pitt impersonators have been arrested on the Costa del Sol after swindling €325,000 o their unsuspecting victims.

The Guardia Civil on the Costa del Sol has dismantled an organised network of Brad Pitt-impersonating fraudsters who managed to steal €325,000 from their victims.

Operation “Bralina” was carried out in cooperation with law enforcement from several Spanish provinces, including Malaga, Granada and Vizcaya. The two ring-leaders have been arrested.

Fraudsters would target vulnerable users of an online Brad Pitt fan website. They would pose as Hollywood stars and cat sh their victims before convincing them to invest in fake business ventures.

A CALL to budding actors, singers, and performers. Costa del Sol amateur entertainment group, A Touch of Class, needs your talents, especially men.

The group, who are now celebrating their tenth year, are currently rehearsing for their next spectacular production, ‘We’ll Meet Again,‘ a sing-along 40s-themed show, and are looking for those who can sing, act, and want to participate socially in their charity performances.

They are a well-established charity fundraising

show group who perform concerts to raise funds and awareness for a variety of good causes and who have performed many concerts all along the Costa del Sol, also travelling to the UK to perform in The Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza in 2018. Since beginning, they have raised over €50,000 for various charities.

Meeting at St Andrew’s church in Los Boliches, Fuengirola on Mondays and Thursdays at 5pm, A Touch of Class is currently rehearsing two productions: ‘We’ll meet again’ and ‘Victorian

Uncertain future

BENALMADENA council is in talks with the real estate company Grupo Tremon over what to do with the Tivoli World amusement park.

Both the council and Tivoli owners, Tremon, have been keeping their cards close to their chests, neither side willing to comment on the negotiations. Many want the park to be reopened and back operating, not least a group of former employees from the park who have been collectively looking after the site since it was closed down in 2020.

The likely outcome, is that the site is turned into a mixed-use park, retaining the amusement park rides and mixing in a large retail centre, something that the neighbourhood where Tivoli is, does not have.

However, Tremon have so far not made

any comment on their position, and the Council uncharacteristically avoided making any statements after the meeting on Friday, September 20. There are fears in the group trying to save Tivoli World that the owners want to turn the plot into a more lucrative housing project, something justifiable given the current housing shortage in Benalmadena.

Meanwhile, the park remains completely closed to the public, and former employees are maintaining the facilities, taking turns to stand guard over the site, as well as feeding the 15 chickens and 50 peacocks inhabiting there. They have organised a demonstration for October 6 at the doors of Tivoli World to draw attention to their calls for the park to be reopened.

Fundraiser success

OVER €4,000 was raised at Pat’s Rescue Party on Friday, September 20 in Estepona in aid of the dog shelter Pat’s Rescue Retreat in Alora.

A wonderful night was had by all with music, food, comedy, and a very generous raffle. In attendance was Pat Waterhouse, owner of Pat’s Rescue Retreat in Alora, currently home to 67 rescued dogs that had been abandoned or abused. Pat managed to make it too, travelling all the way from Alora to receive the funds raised in aid of her rescue centre, and received rapturous applause from the 50 guests at the De La Mar restaurant in Estepona.

The event was raising funds to keep the rescue centre afloat amid mounting financial expenses and to keep the poor dogs from ever having to be put down.

While the rescue centre is owned outright by Pat, the daily running costs are mounting, not least with the water deliveries that have to be brought in due to the drought costing €320 per month. The centre spends €1,200 per month on dog food and

supplies, and veterinary bills were over €3,000 in just the last 6 months.

For this reason, a GoFundMe page has been set up to receive urgent donations, and there is a website at patsrescue.com for those willing and able to donate or take on a new pet or two.

A NEW van has just been added to the fleet of emergency vehicles of Torremolinos: an animal paramedic ambulance.

The van comes with all the clinical health equipment needed to attend to animals in distress which have suffered an accident, especially on the streets, whether pets, lost animals, or wild creatures. Like any paramedic service, the idea is to be able to mobilise quickly and stabilise the injured creature until the emergency service of the Municipal Animal Protection Centre arrives, which will then take charge of the animal and transport it to its facilities for medical attention.

The council has been able to allocate this service to its budget due to recent changes in the law regarding protection of animal rights and welfare, as well as to laws governing the control of environmental health.

ACE autumn lunch

A REMARKABLE seventy animal lovers attended a charity lunch for the ACE I SHIN Dog Shelter, which took place at Restaurante La Sierra, Mijas Costa, on Saturday, September 21.

Beginning with a welcome drink, attendees tucked into a delicious 3-course lunch and enjoyed live entertainment by international vocalist Michelle Daniels. The event, sponsored by Ibex Insurance and Costa Connection Magazine, raised €2,100 to help feed and look after more than 500 dogs and more than 200 cats currently in the care of the Mijas-based shelter.

The afternoon also featured a charity raffle with quality prizes generously donated by members of the local community and ACE supporters. PR volunteer Mark Ridler, who together with Martyn Paylor and Carolyn Melian organised the event, was the perfect MC, and everyone unanimously agreed it was a highly enjoyable afternoon. Sadly, people continue to dump their unwanted animals at the gate of the shelter, almost on

a daily basis, and there is a dire shortage of volunteers to help clean the cages, feed, cuddle, and walk the dogs. Help of every kind is absolutely fundamental to the ACE I SHIN Dog Shelter and all support is deeply appreciated by everyone at ACE, both 4 and 2-legged. So, whether readers can donate food, a few hours of your time every week as a volunteer, or perhaps foster, sponsor, adopt, or remember the animal charity in their wills, this most deserving of causes is in need of help.

Nurse strike

Hospitals in Malaga understaffed

NURSES are due to go on strike this autumn over demands, they claim, the Andalusian health authorities have only paid lip service to.

The Nursing Union (Satse) have just announced that 10,000 nurses throughout the region plan a series of strike actions this autumn because health authorities have not honoured their promises. Understa ng despite population increase, and a lack of speci cally skilled professionals, top the list in a litany of ultimatums nurses are complaining about, and the gures do not lie. It is es-

timated there is a shortfall of around 300 nurses throughout Andalusia, and Malaga is one of the most a ected provinces.

According to reports, the European ratio is 8.5 professionals per 1,000 inhabitants. Spain is worse with a ratio of 6.4. Andalusia is even lower, with 5.4. But Málaga is even lower still with a ratio of 5 health professionals per 1,000 patients. As far as nurses in the Malaga province go, it is Groundhog Day as they have been requesting the autonomous government do something about the worsening

situation for years.

Unions are insisting on an update in the deployment system of professional carers which has not seen any improvement since promises were made in 2023. Dealing with precarious working conditions, such as shortterm contracts that spur the ight of good professionals to the private sector, is also demanded.

Nurses are now warning that strike action will take place throughout the autumn until their demands are met, but have not mentioned speci c dates yet.

Clean up Marbella

UNREST in Marbella and San Pedro has been on the rise this year, with increasing complaints of rubbish in the streets. Now, local residents are taking matters into their own hands.

The indignation only worsened over the summer, a time when, due to the in ux of visitors, street cleaning and rubbish collection should, one would think, be ramped up. However, according to many residents, it reduced with rubbish bins and containers over owing and bin bags abandoned on the streets.

The only solution o ered by the council so far has been a pledge to have local police o cers ne people they spot for not disposing of waste correctly.

Now, residents have had enough and are taking to cleaning up the mess themselves. In some less centric zones, neighbours complain of litter that has built up over years, giving a subconscious green light to others to just throw their litter too.

According to local San Pedro second-home owner Sandra, ‘Once cleared, it’s much easier to keep on top of.’

Sandra and friends have been working

on cleaning up the Camino de Cortes road, just o the A-7175. She lled 19 bags of rubbish and litter, which she found to be a blight on the approach to her family’s apartment. Passers-by thank Sandra and o er to help too. The majority do care, but the challenge is changing the behaviour of a minority who think that littering and dumping rubbish is acceptable.

Stowaway stopover

AN SAS ight from Oslo to Malaga had to make an unscheduled stop in Copenhagen when a stowaway was spotted on board. Barely had the plane reached the coastline when a mouse leapt out of a passenger’s food tray and began to scurry unimpeded around the cabin to the horror of everyone on board.

The normally 3.5-hour SAS Scandinavian Airlines ight taking Norwegian holidaymakers to the popular Costa del Sol destination was diverted to Copenhagen for safety reasons and to eject the intruder. After circling the airport a couple of times, a landing slot was found for the unscheduled plane, and it landed safely so that the 180 passengers on board could disembark.

Luckily, a replacement aircraft was quickly found, and the holidaymakers

could continue on to Malaga. Although a few hours late, the passengers safely touched down at Malaga Costa del Sol airport at 8pm to continue with their holidays.

A spokesperson for SAS con rmed to local press that there had been a mouse on board that had somehow stowed away and then escaped inside the plane, and that making a stopover

was standard procedure for safety reasons. No statement was made on whether they caught the mouse. Unexpected animal passengers are not that unusual. In 2021, four kittens surprised baggage handlers in Hong Kong on a ight that had just arrived from Singapore. Also in 2021, a giant tarantula was discovered on a ight from Brazil to Mexico.

Would you fly long-haul on a no-frills budget airline? Your

BUDGET airlines like EasyJet, Ryanair, and Wizz Air have built their business model by operating nofrills short-haul flights. In return for a lower flight cost, customers forgo luxuries like in-flight meals, entertainment, and a more comfortable seat. Extra legroom is possible, but even then, customers are expected to pay an additional fee for the privilege.

Now, it seems that budget airlines are extending their operations to see just how significant cost is as a factor by offering longer-haul flights but with the same no-frills experience. The seats will be in the same format as those on short-haul flights and won’t recline or come with features such as onboard entertainment or included meals and drinks.

Starting in March 2025, Wizz Air, Which? Magazine’s ‘Worst Airline in Europe’ will offer flights from London Gatwick to Jeddah and Saudi Arabia. The Hungarian budget airline has already confirmed that it plans to add a flight schedule from Milan to Abu Dhabi at a later date.

CEO Jozsef Varadi acknowledges that fifteen to twenty years ago, he thought that three hours would test passenger tolerance. Therefore, he hopes that cost-conscious customers will be willing to ‘suffer the pain’ and that they have adapted to the no-thrills experience.

Intrigued to know if flying has

become all about the cost, Euro Weekly News asked its readers, “Would you fly long-haul on a nofrills budget airline?”

Of those who responded, there was a resounding ‘no’ from many; this accounted for 60 per cent of the responses we received.

Caz Bennett felt that not having a reclining seat would be the dealbreaker for her. She said, “No, I need at least a good reclining seat so I can get some sleep, or it ruins your time away. I took my mum to New York on Silver Jet. That was an experience I’ll never forget. I didn’t even have to go through passport control. Fully flat beds and champagne all the way.”

For Renee Koolen , comfort is also a key consideration. She shared, “I’d rather pay more than ruin the start of my trip looking for a chiropractor.”

Others, like Sam Espejo, said they would be willing to forgo luxury: “Yes, more money to spend on my vacation.”

Interestingly, others, like Karen Joy Harley, were not happy with long-haul flights in general and shared, “I have flown for 10 hours on a luxury airline but never again!! It was a horrendous experience, and it absolutely ruined my holiday!!”

For others, like Andrew Philip Coates , it depended on how much he would save; he said, “It wouldn’t be my first choice, but if it’s half the price, I would consider it ...”

THE construction team behind Barcelona’s iconic Sagrada Familia Basilica revealed new architectural details for the grand cross pinnacle that will top this renowned Modernist masterpiece.

Scheduled for completion in 2026, this cross will coincide with the centenary of Antoni Gaudí’s passing and will feature a viewing area for visitors.

Architects indicate that the cross, measuring 17 metres in height and 13.5 metres in width, will have a hollow interior accommodating up to 11 guests at a time, o ering panoramic views of the city.

This pinnacle will crown the Tower of Jesus Christ, which is still under construction but expected to be nished next year.

Crafted from a special blend of glass and ceramic, the cross will feature uniquely designed curved and pyramid-shaped pieces, along with windows that consist of three layers of curved, laminated glass adorned with textured pyramids.

The unveiling of the cross will not signi-

fy the end of Sagrada Familia’s construction; that e ort is projected to continue until 2034.

Nevertheless, it will give residents and tourists their rst glimpse of the basilica’s ultimate height.

Notably, Gaudí intended for his creation to stand slightly shorter than Montjuïc Hill, adhering to his belief that human-made structures should not surpass those of divine origin.

With the installation of the cross, the Sagrada Familia will reach a total height of 172.5 metres, ve metres shorter than the hill.

Hitched online

IN an increasingly connected world, more and more relationships are blossoming between like-minded beings over massive distances and international borders.

The long-distance relationship has become all the rage. And the next step, tying the knot, has been made legal in the US. For lovebirds separated by geography, the traditional process of marriage online is now legal in the States. Even international borders are now no longer an obstacle to formalising a marriage when a couple cannot physically walk down the aisle together.

Housing Prices in Andalusia Soar for the 13th Consecutive Quarter

The housing market in Andalusia continues its upward trajectory, with property prices rising for the 13th consecutive quarter. Since the first quarter of 2021, when prices last fell, property values have increased consistently. As of the second quarter of 2024, the average price has reached €1,589 per square metre, a 7.5% rise compared to last year, according to the Ministry of Housing.

An 80-square-metre apartment now costs about €127,000, up from €103,680 in 2021—a significant 22% increase in just over three years. Andalusia ranks third in Spain for price growth, following the Balearic Islands and Aragón.

Regional disparities remain stark. Málaga leads the way with an average of €2,400 per square metre and a 9.8% year-on-year increase. An apartment of the same size in Málaga now costs €192,000, while Jaén remains the most affordable, with apartments averaging €65,000. Marbella tops the list as Andalusia’s most expensive location at €3,394 per

square meter, with 80-square-meter apartments costing €271,000, underscoring its luxury real estate market.

Benjamin Beza, Sales Director at

The Agency Marbella - Belleside Real Estate, noted, “Marbella and the Costa del Sol continue to attract buyers globally, particularly high-net-worth individuals. The area’s lifestyle and

investment potential make it highly desirable.”

The Agency Marbella Market Report 2024 highlights Andalusia’s continued appeal to both domestic and international buyers. Despite broader economic challenges, demand for properties, especially in Marbella and surrounding coastal areas, re -

mains strong. For investors, the Costa del Sol is one of the most attractive areas in Spain, with rising prices and luxury developments continuing to shape the market.

For those seeking high-end properties, Málaga remains a top destination, with the luxury sector showing no signs of slowing down.

THE latest report by Public Health France revealed alarming data, stating that today, more than one in 10 French women smoke during pregnancy, despite the widespread knowledge of health risks asso ciated with tobacco use.

A 2021 study by Public Health France surveyed more than 1,300 mothers of children under five years old, revealing that 13 per cent of the women smoked throughout their pregnancy. The survey showed that 45 per cent of the women had stopped smoking after learning of their pregnancy, while 51 per cent reduced their smoking habits and 4 per cent made no changes.

The rates of pregnant women who smoke were also concerning in Spain, as in 2016, Carlos III Health Institu -

te disclosed that 20,4 per cent of women smoked during pregnancy. Based on a survey of 40,934 pregnant women, 66 per cent continued to smoke during pregnancy, and only 22 per cent managed to quit during the first trimester.

The study conducted by the Carlos III Health Institute listed that in the cases of pregnant women smoking, the carbon monoxide and nicotine of tobacco smoke interfere with the oxygen supply to the foetus, as nicotine “easily” crosses the placenta, raising the nicotine concentration up to 15 per cent higher than maternal levels.

France´s national health insurance also highlighted that smoking during pregnancy raises the risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, and placental abruption.

An extreme sports enthusiast has just achieved the impossible, by flying on a magic carpet.

Fall for Ireland

AUTUMN in Ireland is a lovely time to explore the Emerald Isle, where the countryside bursts into vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows.

Take a scenic drive along the Wild Atlantic Way or visit the stunning Cliffs of Moher for breathtaking views. Don’t miss out on Ireland’s historic castles, like Blarney Castle, Killarney National Park, where Ross Castle sits by the lakes, and Dublin Castle, where you can wander through centuries-old halls while enjoying the crisp autumn air.

Autumn also brings a variety of festivals, perfect for immersing yourself in local culture. The Derry Halloween Festival and Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival are just a couple of highlights, showcasing delicious food, music, and a warm community spirit.

Cosying up in a traditional pub is a must during your visit. Grab a pint of Guinness or a warming Irish whiskey while enjoying live music at spots in Temple Bar in Dublin like The Oliver St John Gogarty Bar.

As for the weather, expect a mix of sunshine and rain, so layering is key. Pack a waterproof jacket and comfortable walking shoes for those beautiful countryside hikes. So, pack your bags and get ready to enjoy your Irish adventure this autumn.

Freddy now considers himself to be something of an expert in these sports, and is confident that his intimate knowledge of the Vercors mountains,

in which he has practised his sports for many years, plus the heights he jumps from, mean that his carpet voyages are safe. In fact, in the video, shown on YouTube, Freddy confirms that he allowed himself to fly towards the ground with a descent to 1,600 metres before he felt it necessary to open his para-

A SUPERMARKET in the Netherlands, Jumbo, launched a ‘flirt hour’ for singles, using popular Dutch biscuits, helping customers to score a potential date.

While Tinder may be the preference of some, people are saving up time by looking for dates and grocery shopping at the same time. Inspired by a Spanish TikTok trend, in which Mercadona customers use coded language to signal their interest, Jumbo similarly launched ‘flirt hour’ from 6pm until 7pm.

In Mercadona, instead of complimenting a person who caught your attention, customers place a pineapple upside down in their trolleys, signalling to others that they’re single and ready to mingle.

In Jumbo, a similar code has been popularised, as singles place the Dutch biscuits, ‘beschuits’, upside down in their trolley, inviting a potential partner for a

date and dessert. Although neither of the supermarket chains have claimed responsibility for the trend, social media users comment that the trend is likely to be a new form of marketing. A past contestant of the Spanish reality show First Dates, cinejavi on X commented; “They (Mercadona) have been trying to place this viral campaign for seven years.”

While pineapple is believed to be associated with hospitality and swingers; people in couples who experiment in switching partners, biscuits have no apparent romantic connotations. With social media and digital marketing today, it seems that just about any product can attain a new meaning, making lowkey flirting easier and more playful than ever.

Let’s play ball

MARBELLA

I somehow always managed to get out of playing lacrosse and netball at school. My coordination didn’t lend itself to being any good at either and I much preferred hanging out with my friend Noel, sunbathing or chatting, anything but sports.

Similarly, those girls that really did enjoy playing and still want to practice their skills are fortunate enough to have a netball team, meeting weekly in San Pedro. At the beginning of the summer I interviewed Kelly & Eleanor about their group that plays on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9pm on the Laude San Pedro school’s courts, even competing with other teams.

Now, even if you’re less agile than back in the day, but still loved the game, you can also play because as of 1st October, there will now be a walking netball team, meeting at the same time and place, at Laude, but of course on a different court.

There are plenty of physical and mental health benefits for people of all ages, but for those who are a little more advan-

ced in years, or have minor injuries, joint issues or limited mobility which has deterred you in the past, joining the netball walking team could be right up your street. Not only will it help stay active, tone up the muscles, improve balance and strength but also perhaps to lose a little weight. There’s no running or jumping required, and everything is played at a slower pace, reducing the risk of injury.

The social aspect is also very important and just meeting the ladies who are joining Jill Wilson on this new venture is a testament to that. If you’re interested in getting involved, the ball’s is in your court.

Nicole’s opinions are her own and are not necessarily representative of those of the publishers, advertisers or sponsors.

Groundbreaking research

The Research Unit promotes the participation of patients undergoing surgery in this study, which aims to prevent tumour recurrence and improve their chances of recovery.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Spain.

The Research Unit of the Comprehensive Oncology Service at Quirónsalud Málaga Hospital is participating in a clinical trial with personalised “vaccines” for lung cancer patients who have undergone surgery. “This trial is expected to prevent tumour recurrence and improve the chances of recovery for these patients,” says Dr Manuel Cobo, oncologist and co-director of the Oncology Research Unit at Quirónsalud Málaga Hospital.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Spain, with an estimated 23,129 deaths from this disease in 2023. Because of this, “this research breakthrough offers great hope for thousands of people suffering from the illness.”

The trial vaccine, known as RNm-4157 (V940), is an innovative, individualised neoantigen therapy based on messenger RNA, combined with immunotherapy. Developed by the biotech company Moderna, it has already shown positive results in high-risk resected melanoma patients, demonstrating improved recurrence-free survival and distant metastasis-free survival, according to Dr Cobo.

This cutting-edge therapy for lung cancer is currently being trialled in 19 countries, including the United States, Japan, and Spain. In Spain, it is being conducted at only six hospitals: Quirónsalud Málaga Hospital, Quirónsalud Madrid Hospital, Puerta de Hierro Hospital, Vall d’He -

bron Hospital, Catalan Institute of Oncology, and Virgen del Rocío Hospital. These vaccines are a form of immunotherapy tailored to the individual’s specific type of tumour, with the aim of preventing cancer cells from spreading. “Even after successful surgery to remove lung cancer, cancer cells strive to survive and multiply. This individualised experimental vaccine seeks to prevent this by training the immune system to recognise and attack these malignant cells, thereby preventing a recurrence with this

post-surgical treatment,” explains Dr Cobo.

The Research Unit at Quirónsalud Málaga Hospital aims to facilitate patient access to these vaccines, which, despite still being in the clinical trial phase, represent a pioneering step forward in research.

The Research Unit of the Comprehensive Oncology Service at Quirónsalud Málaga Hospital invites all surgically treated lung cancer patients to participate in this innovative personalised therapy trial, which enhances the immune response against

cancer and represents a significant advance in the fight against this disease.

The Oncology Research Unit of the Comprehensive Cancer Service at Quirónsalud Málaga Hospital, led by Drs Manuel Cobo, Cristina Quero, and Jorge Contreras, is dedicated to researching and developing cutting-edge treatments to combat cancer. This initiative represents “a significant step forward in our mission to provide hope and better therapeutic options for patients affected by this disease. The creation of a Clinical Research Unit in

Oncology is an unprecedented opportunity in the field of private medicine in our region and is the first of its kind in Andalusia,” notes Dr Cristina Quero. Meanwhile, Dr Jorge Contreras highlights that the Oncology Research Unit represents “a firm commitment to scientific excellence, therapeutic innovation, and most importantly, the well-being of cancer patients. We are excited about the potential this initiative has to transform the landscape of cancer treatment and offer new hope to those battling this illness.”

There are currently over 10 open clinical trials for various types of tumours, offering our patients opportunities to access these novel treatments.

Speaking EuropeanTanja Schrocke

TANJA was just 18 when she moved out to Spain on her own, seeking a new life and career in tourism. She left Germany without regrets, not ever missing the “darkness,” the cold, and the “routine” of her hometown.

Even though Tanja has been living in Spain, to her it “feels just like yesterday,” that she found a new home in Lloret del Mar and felt instantly “accepted” by the locals.

After spending time in Costa Brava, Tanja found a new job in real estate in Denia, where she lived for a few years after moving to Altea; there, she feels surrounded by a “big family,” and is delighted to know “every spot of the little town.” Within months, she learned Spanish, and today, has friends from Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK.

Tanja´s visits to her motherland are limited to every once in two years; only

to see her mother and grandmother. She confessed that she feels “depressed after just three days of being in Germany,” and “feels like a foreigner,” in her old home. Instead, she invites her family to discover her life in Spain, where she anticipates an exciting future with her boyfriend, and plans to stay in Costa Blanca, her ultimate home. Her career, currently with Premium Villas, has been an integral reason for her stay. Working in real estate, Tanja said she sees it as “a possibility to help other people find a dream home.”

METRO BANK announced a series of job cuts as it carries out an £80 million (€95 million) plan to reduce costs. It expects to slash 300 posts in business operations, IT and support, following the £925 million (€1.1 billion) rescue operation in 2023 when Colombian billionaire Jaime Gilinski Bacal took control of the bank.

PRET A MANGER sales reached £1.1 billion (€1.3 billion) for the first time in 2023 as the UK sandwich chain expanded overseas.

Pret revealed that £1 (€1.19) of every £4 (€4.75) that customers spent on its sandwiches and coffee now came from outside the UK.

The chain owned by Luxembourg-headquartered German conglomerate JAB Holding opened 81 new shops in 2023. More than 50 per cent were located in Canada, India, Greece and Spain, where Pret has outlets in Madrid, Barcelona and Lanzarote.

There was also ‘significant’ progress in the US, where Pret has opened new sites on the East Coast.

Although the business remained ‘proudly British-based and British-built’ and would continue to expand across the UK, the company revealed that a major part of Pret’s future growth plan was international.

The 2023 results had helped to drive a 12 per cent rise in underlying profits to £166 million (€197.1 million), which allowed the group to meet its target of doubling the volume of business three years ahead of schedule.

BRITAIN’S annual inflation rate held steady at 2.2 per cent in August, with no change on the July figure.

HARLAND & WOLFF, eternally associated with the Belfast shipyard that built the Titanic, is entering administration for the second time in five years.

The company had been unsuccessful in trying to fund new funding and announced on September 16 that it was insolvent. It planned to appoint administrators “imminently” although the administration process would be limited to Harland & Wolff Group Holdings and the operational companies running the yards were expected to continue trading.

All shareholders would probably lose their money, Harland & Wolff said, although sources revealed that around 20 companies were interested in acquiring parts of the business in a sales procedure carried out by investment bank Rothschild.

BBVA expects to save €300 million in staff costs and plans to close 300 branches, while sources with inside knowledge of the proposed deal have predicted that 4,000 jobs would be lost.

“We’re going to return to the office and the way we were before the onset of Covid,” chief executive Andy Jassy said, explaining that it would help staff “to invent, collaborate, and be sufficiently connected to each other.”

BRITAIN eats 60,000 tons of blueberries annually, of which 90 per cent are imported, although sales of home-produced blueberries rose by 13 per cent this year. “Everyone thinks blueberries are a tropical fruit grown abroad,” the British Berry Growers (BBG) trade association said.

Issa steps down

MOHSIN ISSA has resigned as Asda chairman and will be replaced by the company’s chairman Lord Stuart Rose.

While Rose takes on the day-to-day running of Asda, Issa remains a minority co-owner and a non-executive board member but will concentrate on his petrol station forecourts business, EG Group. Rose, who was execu -

Iberdrola waiver

THE Maine Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has approved the takeover of Central Maine Power’s parent company Avangrid by Iberdrola, its largest shareholder.

The PUC agreed on September 17 that Central Maine Power could omit the required state review of the $2.5 billion (€2.25 billion) transaction that would put Avangrid under the full control of the Bil-

bao-based energy giant.

In a 2-1 vote, the state regulators finally agreed to waive the assessment that allowed the Spanish multinational to acquire the remaining 18.4 per cent of Avangrid which it did not already own. Earlier, Fitch Ratings had said that the deal would be positive for Avangrid, which could now benefit from the ‘financial flexibility’ of Iberdrola.

“We respect Mohsin’s decision to move on from his role at Asda, where his work is complete, to be the sole CEO of EG Group,” Rose said on September 18.

“He has laid the foundations to deliver a world-class IT infrastructure, strengthening Asda for the long term.”

According to the Telegraph earlier this year, Asda was prepared to pay a new, topflight chief executive between £8 million (€9.5 million) and £10 million (€11.9 million). At the time, this had failed to lure candidates, presumably owing to Issa’s continued involvement in the supermarket chain.

Slime, stings and droppings

THE world of beauty is full of unusual trends, and some of the strangest facials have gained a cult following for their supposed benefits. Three of the weirdest treatments include bee

sting facials, bird poo masks, and snail slime facials.

Bee sting facials involve using products that contain bee venom, which is said to stimulate the production of co-

llagen and elastin, hel ping to firm the skin and reduce wrinkles.

The sensation mi mics a mild sting, and it’s believed to help fight the signs of ageing.

The bird poo facial, also known as the ‘geisha facial’, uses sanitised nightingale droppings. This ancient Japanese treatment is praised for its ability to brighten the skin and reduce hyperpigmentation, thanks to its natural enzymes and urea content.

Snail slime facials are another strange but popular option. Snail mucin is packed with nutrients, such as hyaluronic acid, glycolic acid, and antioxidants, which help to hydrate, heal, and smooth the skin. While the concept might sound odd, many swear by its hydrating and regenerative properties.

NEKO HEALTH, co-founded by Spotify’s Daniel Ek and entrepreneur Hjalmar Nilsonne, is shaking up healthcare with its futuristic body MOTs. The company aims to move healthcare from symptom-based treatment to proactive disease prevention. But while the technology promises early detection, critics argue it could deepen health inequalities and add pressure to public health systems like the NHS.

Launched in 2022, Neko Health’s clinics use high-definition cameras, lasers, and radar to conduct full-body scans, detecting potential health

However, health experts warn these services may increase inequality, as wealthier individuals access screenings while at-risk groups miss out. Additionally, the strain on

Scent stack success

PERFUME layering is the art of combining different fragrances to create a unique, personalised scent. It involves applying various products, such as body lotions, oils, and perfumes, either from the same fragrance family or different ones that complement each other. The process can begin with a lightly scented shower gel, followed by a matching or complementary body lotion, and topped with perfume or cologne.

The goal of layering is to enhance the longevity and depth of a scent, allowing it to evolve throughout the day. By blending fragrances, you can tailor your scent to suit your mood, occasion, or personal preferences, ensuring it’s both distinctive and memorable. It offers a creative way to experiment with aromas, giving you more control over the strength of your fragrance and helping it to last longer.

COSTA LIVING

THE enchanting appeal of Spain can be intoxicating, with its beautiful beaches, brilliant sunshine, open spaces, and easy-paced lifestyle. It’s no wonder that the expat community is continually growing and diversifying with each passing year. Of course, one of the first decisions that needs to be made once you have set your sights on a location is what type of residence you want to call home.

Costa del Sol property market heats up

THE property market on the Costa del Sol is booming, and not just because of the summer heat! In my 23 years in the industry, I’ve seen many changes, but the post-Covid surge is unprecedented. The market is now more mature and established than ever before.

When I started as an estate agent in Calahonda in 2001, our clients were mostly British or Spanish.

Today, the coast attracts a diverse international clientele, thanks to extensive development and improved infrastructure. For example, direct flights from Gothenburg (Sweden) to Malaga have increased from one per week in the 90s to 11 per week now, reflecting a

broader trend across Europe. Malaga airport saw 161,684 flights in 2023, up from 104,536 in 2000. Meanwhile, the number of homes in Malaga Province has grown by 40 per cent.

For estate agents, the market has transformed dramatically. New technologies allow us to reach global clients with just a few clicks. 3D tours, video tours, and social media enable potential buyers to explore properties from their living rooms in London, Oslo, Berlin, or Örkelljunga.

This convenience has sped up the buying process significantly. In 2015, selling a property took months; now, it often takes just weeks or even days.

However, there are fewer pro -

perties for sale now. In August 2024, there were 54 per cent fewer homes on the market in Malaga Province compared to August 2015, despite an increase of 120,000 homes since then.

The market is now characterised by high demand and limited supply, making it a seller’s market.

If you’re considering selling, choose an estate agent with a well-established office in your area. They will have better local knowledge and possibly an existing client list. Ensure the agent is registered and has public liability insurance. Look for agents affiliated with API or GIPE, the major estate agents’ associations in Spain.

YOUR terrace can become the central spot for outdoor relaxation and enjoyment. Today, terraces are seen as an extension of your living space. Blending the terrace with its natural surroundings helps bridge the gap between indoor and outdoor areas.

Using natural materials and colours that reflect the landscape creates a seamless transition. Plants are key to this approach, adding beauty and improving air quality. Incorporating greenery is vital. Potted plants, vertical gardens, and green walls can turn your terrace into a

lush, inviting space. Choosing native and low-maintenance plants ensures your terrace stays vibrant year-round.

Versatility is also important. Opt for multifunctional furniture that saves space and adds practicality. Look for benches with built-in storage, adjustable tables, and folding chairs to maximise space while keeping style.

Durable materials are crucial for outdoor furniture. Aluminium, teak, and synthetic rattan are great choices because they withstand weather conditions and

require minimal upkeep, ensuring your furniture lasts longer.

Paving is another key element in terrace design. It provides a foundation for the space and affects its durability and appearance.

Choosing the right paving materials can enhance the terrace’s visual appeal and functionality.

Although the property price in euros remains constant from the signing of the contract to the completion, the cost in your local currency can vary.

For instance, if your currency loses value by 3 per cent against the euro, the cost of the property in your currency increases by 3 per cent. This added expense can be significant, depending on the property’s price.

To manage this risk, it’s wise to consult a currency exchange expert before you start viewing properties or signing agreements. They can help you set your budget in euros and prepare for possible fluctuations in your currency.

One effective tool is a forward contract, which allows you to lock in an exchange rate for the full property price. This protects you from future rate changes and helps you avoid unexpected costs at completion.

Relocating or retiring from the UK to the sunny Costa del Sol is an exciting prospect, offering a change of scenery, lifestyle, and perhaps a lower cost of living.

Is it worth getting solar panels in Spain?

ENERGY costs are skyrocketing in Spain, so installing solar panels could help to save you big money on your energy bills. Investing in the natural characteristics of Andalucia makes perfect sense for your pocket. According to the University of Malaga, we enjoy more than 3,000 hours of glorious sunshine every year in this part of the world. So why not make it an economic benefit? Solar energy is rapidly becoming a preferred solution and smart investment for homeowners on the Costa del Sol.

The potential for money savings is enormous. With soaring energy prices, the return on investment (ROI) of a solar installation is becoming quicker and potentially profitable. On the Costa del Sol, most homeowners can see ROI in just four to five years. It’s possible to live through the summer months without paying electricity bills and with significantly reduced bills in winter.

If you rent out a property, solar panels instantly increase its attractiveness and value, as renters are often on the lookout for cost savings on their bills. A solar installation also boosts the value of your home, especially now that an ‘energy certificate’ is needed to sell your property. A solar installation can significantly reduce your home’s dependency on the

grid and give you a better rating, and therefore the chance to bump up the price when it is time to sell.

For those with electric vehicles, charging with solar-generated electricity will make an important impact in fuel costs, and swimming pools can be warmed with year-round free power.

In an era of environmental concerns, solar energy offers an eco-friendly alternative. By producing your own solar power, you reduce your carbon footprint and contribute to cleaner, greener energy. The more households that use solar, the lower the demand for non-environ-

mentally friendly and polluting electricity. SolpanelExperten installs solar panels for homes and office buildings throughout Costa del Sol. As well as supplying a clean energy source, they offer a solar energy monitoring app which allows customers to see how much power they are using; financing of installations; and a very low maintenance technology.

The Costa del Sol is the optimal place to have solar panels and generate your own solar energy. With up to 320 days of sunshine a year, you have the opportunity to quickly regain the money you invested in your own solar energy.

THEIR design allows them to stand out as a focal point, transforming any bathroom.

A key feature of free-standing bathtubs is their flexibility in placement.

Unlike built-in tubs that are fixed to walls, free-standing baths can be placed anywhere in the room.

Whether beside a window, in a corner, under a skylight, or even in the centre, they create a striking visual effect.

Free-standing baths enhance a bathroom’s appearance with their independent design, which

adds a touch of sophistication.

With various shapes and finishes available, they can be tailored to match your style and make a bold statement.

Installation is straightforward compared to built-in models since free-standing baths don’t require a support structure.

However, it’s crucial to ensure the floor can support the bathtub’s weight.

Comfort is another advantage of free-standing baths.

Many are designed to fit the body’s contours for a more comfortable experience, and deeper models allow for full immersion, making bath time more relaxing.

Available in a range of sizes and shapes, free-standing baths can fit different bathroom sizes and styles.

Whether you need a compact option for a smaller space or a luxurious model for a larger bathroom, there’s a free-standing bath to meet your needs and enhance your bathroom’s design.

New developments on the Costa del Sol: A Safe Investment

THE new-build property market on the Costa del Sol has experienced significant growth in recent years, establishing itself as one of Spain’s leading real estate hotspots. Currently, the region accounts for 10.6 per cent of the total new-build properties nationwide, second only to Madrid, making it the country’s second-largest market. However, housing demand in the area continues to exceed supply, with an absorption rate of 133.5 per cent, meaning that the number of new homes does not meet the interest from both national and international buyers.

“At present, there is a high demand, particularly in Marbella and Estepona, but generally throughout the Costa del Sol. We have a large number of international clients who view the Spanish coast as a preferred destination for a second home

Branded residences

or even a long-term residence,” says Oscar Ochoa, director of new-build developments at GILMAR. The shortage of prime land, alongside rising material and labour costs, adds to this excess demand, driving prices upwards with no sign of easing in the short to medium term. “At GILMAR, we currently offer a wide selection of quality developments,” Ochoa adds.

The real estate company offers luxury developments such as Balcón del Mediterráneo, an exclusive project of high-end homes located in the sought-after New Golden Mile in Estepona. This impressive development features apartments with three, four, and five bedrooms, ranging from 200 to 300 square metres, designed to provide maximum comfort. Prices start from €967,000.

For those who love Estepona, Portama-

re offers the chance to enjoy unparalleled views of the Mediterranean Sea, the Rock of Gibraltar, the African coastline, and stunning sunsets over the sea. This development of 22 apartments provides a unique living experience, just 100 metres from the beach and the charming town harbour. Prices start from €377,000.

Solaris is the option GILMAR offers in La Cala de Mijas. This spectacular new-build represents all the conveniences of a private development, with two and three-bedroom apartments, spacious terraces, a storage room, and covered parking. This development stands out for its unique natural surroundings, offering peace and comfort. Prices start from €275,000.

In addition to the growing demand, experts also point to a shift in buying trends. “A key feature of this new phase

THE Costa del Sol’s historical distinction as a benchmark for the most luxurious residential developments is being maintained and strengthened. In addition to the million-dollar mansions and highend developments that continue to proliferate, it now includes Europe’s highest concentration of socalled ‘branded residences’.

The provinces of Malaga and Cadiz are home to nine branded developments including: Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi Casa, Four Seasons, Karl Lagerfeld

is the focus on high-standard homes with contemporary designs, large windows, and more generous spaces, aimed at a medium to high-income clientele, predominantly foreign. Branded residences, for instance, are proving very successful, particularly among Middle Eastern clients,” Ochoa explains.

New developments on the Costa del Sol present an excellent investment opportunity, with a dynamic market that, although still facing an imbalance between supply and demand, offers high-quality properties and an unmatched appeal for international clients.

and Lamborghini. Residential property that, in addition to the premium nature of its construction and services, adds the value that comes from being linked to renowned brands in the luxury sector. And this means that there are properties with a price tag to match; up to €20 million.

Projects are already taking shape in Marbella and Benahavis and, according to information from Savills Global Residential Development Consultancy, the Costa del Sol is the region in Europe, “with the

highest number of branded residence projects.” All of these are linked to top level brands and the first development to be completed is expected to be EPIC by Fendi Casa. “Worldwide, this type of property has experienced a growth of more than 160 per cent over the last decade, with a turnover of more than €30 billion,” say Savills and pointed to Spain as one of the countries with the greatest potential for the development of this type of project in Europe, mainly in the Costa del Sol.

CREATING an outdoor kitchen is a great way to blend functionality with style, transforming your outdoor space into a culinary retreat.

Start by evaluating the size of your plot to determine how much space you can allocate for the outdoor kitchen.

Plan the layout, including essential elements like the grill, countertop, sink, and seating.

Make sure there is enough room for movement and cooking tasks.

Check for available electrical, water, and gas connections on your property.

Ensure these utilities are positioned conveniently to support your appliances and services safely.

To extend the usability of your outdoor kitchen throughout the year, consider adding protective features.

A covered structure, such as a roof or a pergola, can shield the area from the elements, and retractable awnings

can provide shade during sunny days.

Integrate the outdoor kitchen with your landscape by choosing materials that complement the existing surroundings, like stone, wood, or stainless steel.

Adding plants and greenery can enhance the ambience, making the space more inviting.

Organise the outdoor kitchen into functional zones, such as cooking, preparation, and dining areas.

This will streamline tasks and make the space more enjoyable for entertaining guests.

By considering these factors, you can design an outdoor kitchen that fits seamlessly into your plot, offering both practical benefits and aesthetic appeal.

This approach will ensure that your outdoor space becomes a cherished part of your home, ideal for summer gatherings and year-round use.

Survey reassurance

In Spain, obtaining a structural survey before purchasing property is less common than in some other countries, but it is still an option worth considering.

THE construction boom of the early 2000s some subpar building practices. examines the land on which it is built.

If you decide to commission a survey and your offer is contingent upon its results, it’s important to consult with an independent lawyer early in the process.

They can help incorporate the survey condition into your purchase contract.

To find a surveyor, you can refer to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) website: ricsfirms.com, which provides a directory of regulated firms and surveyors operating in Spain.

The website allows you to filter by location to find a suitable professional for your needs.

Market round up

AS we slide into the second half of the year, with the kids back in school, the Costa del Sol property market is sleepily accelerating back into action. Perhaps the crazy August heat has fried our circuits a little, but the first half of the year was exceptionally busy, with many agencies running low on housing stock.

According to data from the Tinsa Report of June 2024, sales in coastal areas of Málaga Province like the Costa del Sol, currently make up 83 per cent of total sales for the province. It’s also worth mentioning that the main buyers of coastal properties are foreign nationals, and the average price of houses per square metre

are 10.7 per cent higher year on year. Obviously, this is great news for vendors, but these statistics have certainly not deterred buyers. As we finish off Q3 which is traditionally quieter, we are optimistically bullish that Q4 will produce more success stories for buyers and vendors on the Costa del Sol. We are already starting with some great listings for the next quarter, but please remember, our team at Blue Gecko Estates is always happy to provide a no obligation free valuation to those thinking about listing their property. You just have to ask! We look forward to seeing you out there.

Sail to the shade

FABRIC structures, such as shade sails, combine traditional building materials, metal, wood, stone, and glass - with a fabric membrane, typically designed under very high tension.

The most common application is the traditional awning, however shade sails, tension membranes, and retractable fabric roofs are becoming increasingly popular as people discover their cost and environmental benefits.

Shade Sails are pieces of fabric designed to create large shaded spaces. The concept of creating spaces with large pieces of material is not new. The existence of shade sails can be traced back to the ancient Egyptians and later the Greeks and Romans, where they were used to shade the crowds in the Coliseum of Rome. The Roman Armies were shaded from the draining effects of the sun with shade sails during wartime. It is a concept recently rediscovered in Australia in the early 1970s and spreading around the world.

When incorporated within existing architecture, large spaces can be repurposed. Fabric structures have massive advantages over structures made from traditional materials. They are lightweight and incorporate a lot less material, they can be efficiently engineered and installed, and structures such as shade sails can involve complex 3D geometrical patterns that enable unlimited scope in architectural creativity.

Grill n chill or no go?

WHETHER you can have a barbecue outdoors on the Costa del Sol depends on local regulations and specific rules that vary by area.

Spain does not have a national law governing outdoor barbecues.

Instead, each autonomous community sets its own rules regarding the use of fires in public spaces.

Due to recent severe fires across Spain, these regulations have become stricter.

Generally, barbecues are prohibited in rural areas, with restrictions varying by terrain type and season.

During the hottest months, regulations are typically more stringent to reduce fire risk.

On beaches, barbecues are usually not allowed, though some towns may have designated areas where they are permitted with prior authorisation from local authorities.

For barbecues on terraces and balconies, national regulations are not specific.

You should consult local municipal regulations and the Horizontal Property Law, which prohibits activities that could harm, annoy, or endanger property or residents. As a result, barbecues might be restricted under these rules.

For ground-floor apartments with patios, check your community’s bylaws and local regulations

to see if barbecues are allowed.

Barbecues in attics face fewer restrictions because they are less likely to disturb neighbours, but it’s still polite to inform them and verify local rules.

If you live in a house with a plot of land in the countryside, the ability to have a barbecue depends on local and regional regulations.

These rules differ between urban and rural areas, reflecting varying fire risk levels.

A world of washbasins

WHEN choosing a washbasin for your bathroom renovation or new build, consider these key factors to ensure it meets both your functional needs and design preferences:

The washbasin should complement your bathroom’s overall style, whether modern or traditional. It needs to blend well with other elements to create a cohesive look.

Washbasins come in various materials like stone, ceramic, and solid surfaces, each offering different textures and finishes.

These materials can add unique character and

contribute to the bathroom’s design theme.

Colour is another important factor. Washbasins are available in classic neutrals or bold hues such as blue, pink, green, and brown. Your colour choice can either blend with the existing decor or stand out as a feature.

Consider the shape and size of the washbasin. Smaller basins are ideal for compact spaces, while larger ones can make a statement in bigger bathrooms. The shape can range

from elegant curves to minimalist lines, affecting the overall aesthetic.

Ensure that the taps and accessories, like towel rails and toilet paper holders, match the washbasin in style and finish. This will contribute to a unified look and functionality.

Some washbasins offer integrated storage or can be paired with cabinetry for added organisation. This helps keep the bathroom tidy and functional.

Proper lighting around the washbasin can enhance its appearance and functionality. Good lighting highlights the basin’s features and helps it become a focal point in the design.

There are various styles of washbasins, including built-in, counter top, pedestal, and inset models.

Sales increases at luxurious resort, Puente Romano 20%

ceeding €30,000 per m2, Puente Romano is a unique location offering the highest levels of luxury and excellence in the Golden Mile with the best in gastronomy including Nobu, Cipriani, COYA, Gaia, Chanca, Dani García, and more. This lifestyle choice offers the

Prices here exceed €30,000m2 (compared to an average in Marbella of €4,703m2) and the most expensive property currently on sale in Puen-

te Romano is Penthouse

One, two properties in a six-bedroom, six-bathroom penthouse du-

THINKING of buying a property in Spain? Whether you’re drawn to the golden beaches of the Costa del Sol or the vibrant culture of Barcelona. However, beyond the excitement of finding your dream home, comes the challenge of navigating the completion payment process.

The good news? With the support of Currencies Direct and its revolutionary PropertyPay solution you can avoid the delays, hefty bank fees, and the hassle that has traditionally plagued this process.

The challenges posed by traditional payment methods

Historically, when purchasing property abroad, buyers have had to rely on banker’s drafts to complete transactions. These drafts often come with steep fees - typically around 0.5 per cent of the total, which can amount to thousands of euros depending on the property price.

Sellers, too, face high fees when depositing drafts - sometimes as much as 1 per cent - and can experience significant delays before funds appear in their account.

How to maximise the savings on your Spanish property purchase

Another common option is using an intermediary like a solicitor or notary, but this comes with additional costs, further complicating the process.

Introducing PropertyPay: a modern solution

In contrast, PropertyPay offers a free, secure, and 100 per cent digital solution, revolutionising how international property transactions are handled.

PropertyPay greatly simplifies the whole property process, enabling direct transfers between buyers and sellers without the need for bank visits, drafts, or intermediary accounts.

With PropertyPay, payments are also only processed once the title deed is signed, giving you full control over your funds. If the sale doesn’t proceed, your money remains securely in your account.

In addition, if both the buyer and seller hold accounts with Currencies Direct, the seller can receive their funds almost instantly - even using the proceeds to celebrate on the same day!

Save on overseas money transfers

In addition to the seamless property payment process, Currencies Direct offers significant savings when transferring funds internationally. Whether you’re sending money abroad for a purchase or repatriating proceeds, using traditional banks can lead to additional fees and less favourable exchange rates.

With Currencies Direct, you’ll avoid transfer and receiving fees, no matter the amount. You can also lock in exchange rates up to a year in advance or receive regular market updates so you can time your transfer for when the exchange rate is most favourable for you.

Learn more about PropertyPay PropertyPay is set to truly revolutionise the Spanish property market, making transactions smoother, faster, and more cost effective. By eliminating traditional delays and fees, it brings a modern touch to the process, ensuring peace of mind for buyers and sellers alike.

Curbing the youth crime wave

LEAPY LEE

SAYS IT

OTHERS THINK IT

Personally, I don’t think that the young crime wave, which is at the moment practically engulfing the UK, has very little to do with the countries lack of police resources. I believe a large part of the blame can be firmly apportioned to the breakdown of the family unit. Huge numbers of families across the UK have for years taken full advantage of the liberal benefit policies of successive governments. Child benefits have been a particularly lucrative source of earnings. Consequently, many children have been conceived and born purely to add to the family income. This has resulted in enormous dysfunctional families, particularly those to whom benefits are a way of life and the children merely a means to a financial end. There is no love or guidance in these families. Once the children’s purpose has been served, they are left to roam the streets with no sense of decency or compassion for their fellow human beings what-

soever. How could there be when there have been no examples of it at home? Once let loose, they link up with likeminded offspring of their fellow dysfunctional neighbors and begin to run riot. They soon begin to realise, that the impossibly priced electronic devices and expensive ‘toys’ they have been bombarded with on television, are completely out of their financial reach, even if they took a ‘proper’ job. So, they turn to crime. This includes knifing and a positive plethora of young murder victims, fatalities who now seem to be publicised for a day or two and then forgotten! How many are being injured and never even mentioned in the media, I dread to think. To be honest I can see no answer to the immediate situation. Lock up as many of them as possible I suppose, assuming there’s enough room! As to the future, only allowing child benefits for up to two children would be a start. At least this would curb the temptation to pour even more unwanted and unloved future criminals into our society. More police are certainly needed, but only because the num-

bers of young criminals have escalated so alarmingly. I would like to see Boot camps built all across the country, where these young offenders can be sent to learn discipline, values and respect for their fellow human beings. Trades could be taught. Even simply showing someone actually cares may rescue at least a proportion of them that can be released to become valued members of society. Finally, digressing to other problems always close to my heart; there is still a relatively easy way to stop the war in the East. Give back the Israeli hostages, unharmed and well. Stop terrorist organisations lobbing missiles from adjoining countries into Israel, sit down at the table and accept the terms already offered a number of times and subsequently refused. Only then can we get back to the peaceful existence revered by most. Otherwise it will only get worse, finishing up Lord knows where. Unfortunately, they don’t seem to know it makes sense!

Zurich’s public transport

THE European Commission’s ‘Quality of Life in European Cities, 2023’ report ranks Zurich, Switzerland as the top city for public transport satisfaction. An impressive 95 per cent of Zurich’s residents are happy with the city’s clean and punctual trams, buses and trains.

For expatriates, good public transport can make or break daily life, and Zurich’s investment in its integrated network offers reliability.

Vienna follows closely with 91 per cent satisfaction. The Austrian capital’s affordable and extensive system is praised for its efficiency. Helsinki also ranks high, with 89 per cent of residents satisfied thanks to its modern, eco-friendly transport options, including ferries for scenic island trips.

Stockholm, Sweden, also impresses with 88 per cent satisfaction, offering sustainable and reliable options that cater to eco-conscious commuters.

However, the report highlights that not all cities fare as well. Rome, Italy, struggles with just 29 per cent satisfaction due to frequent delays, overcrowding and outdated infrastructure.

For those considering a move to Europe, public transport is an essential factor. Having reliable modes of transport makes navigating city life easier and more enjoyable.

Cakes and call centres

Spanish cakes lie! Maybe that’s a bit strong but at best they don’t ever taste as good as they look. Beautiful cream turns out to be synthetic crap. The delicious looking pastry just crumbles to nothing. The flavour does not actually taste like it’s meant to. Chocolate eclairs are filled with custard. There’s some called fartons – I’ll leave that one there! Many times, I have tried different cakes and very rarely do I enjoy them. The ones that are usually OK are the ones that are just cake, like carrot cake and occasionally a cheese cake.

They have started work again on the road outside where I live and it’s now closed which is very inconvenient for motorists, but not for cyclists, motorbikes, electric scooters or motor scooters because all they do is drive on the pavement and the cyclists will weave in and out as do the electric scooters. What gives them the right to do that and at high speed too? The motor bikes and scooters just ride along as though it’s legal. There will be a terrible accident soon. At least the motor scooters and motorbikes should have insurance unlike bikes and electric scooters that

contribute nothing and ride around like they own the road and no rules apply to them.

Good news this week - after five months Vodafone finally got my Prime and Max working again. I must have called them 30 times and eventually one of their English speaking ladies in client services sorted it. We got quite friendly, because even though, when you dial the number you get random people, I got her a few times. The interesting thing is none of them are actually in Spain. They work from home (often heard her baby in the background). They cannot now speak to technical department like they used to when they worked out of an office. Working from home doesn’t work, you need to be in the right environment to get things done and sitting in your lounge with your kid, or another family member distracting you, is wrong. Also you need to interact with your colleagues - ask them for advice on the questions you can’t answer.

Good to see Donald Trump spewing out more garbage this time about Haitian immigrants eating people’s dogs and cats in a small Ohio city. The scary thing is the amount of his followers that believe this absolute bull sh1t.

I’m having a belated summer break – be back soon.

VIEWS OF A GRUMPY OLD MAN MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION

Bedouin House

DEEP House duo Bedouin, a music production and DJ partnership based in the United States, are playing the Momentum club in Marbella on Sunday, September 29.

Consisting of Tamer Malki and Rami Abousabe, Bedouin are multi-instrumentalists, vocalists, songwriters, and music producers who blend their Middle Eastern heritage, Western upbringing, and international experiences into a genre-defying sound.

The duo has released music on labels such as Crosstown Rebels, All Day I Dream, and their own label, Human by Default. They have also collaborated with artists like Virgil Abloh, Rony Seikaly, Guy Gerber, Black Coffee and Guy Liberte among others.

Bedouin has received recognition for their work, including two appearances on BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix, and being awarded Mixmag’s ‘Breakthrough Artists’ in 2017. The duo have performed

at notable events and venues such as Burning Man, Coachella, Tomorrowland, Art Basel, Ushuaïa, and Wynn Las Vegas. In 2017, their cover of Pink Floyd’s ‘Set Control for the Heart of the Sun’ was personally endorsed by Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason. Their Ibiza residency, Bedouin Saga, was awarded ‘Best Night in Ibiza’ by DJ Awards in 2019. In 2022, they recorded a hybrid live set in Petra, Jordan for Cercle, which was awarded as one of the best sets of 2022 by an EDM magazine.

Table reservations can be made for dinner at the website momentomarbella. com. Price per diner is estimated to be around €150.

Drink, eat, meet & greet

DRINK, Eat, Meet, and Greet Social San Pedro de Alcantara on Friday, September 27, from 7.30 pm until 10.30 pm at Del Grifo, Calle Manuel González Portilla, San Pedro de Alcantara.

Readers Who Like Artisan Craft Beers and Bar Socials Will Love This.

Drink, Eat, Meet, and Greet Social Marbella is a pleasant evening where it’s all about mingling over a drink or two and getting to know each other better. The event is at an artisan microbrewery on the San Pedro de Alcantara main boulevard. Interestingly, all the beers served at this watering hole are brewed on the premises, meaning

you’ll be getting an authentic craft beer experience while you make new connections.

Readers who prefer wine, cocktails, or non-alcoholic beverages are, of course, welcome as well. For readers who get peckish after knocking back a few, the venue also serves food.

It’s the perfect oppor-

tunity to relax, enjoy great company, and indulge in delicious local flavours.

This event costs €1 per person to cover the group’s admin costs. Check out this Meetup with Marbella Food, Wine and Other Shenanigans: www. meetup.com/marbella-food-and-wine-sheninigans

A cosplay catwalk

COLLECTORS of Japanese pop culture will be in their element on Saturday, September 28 and Sunday, 29 at the Salon Manga Mijas.

There will also be competitions, including a comic book drawing contest, a K-pop dancing contest, a cosplay catwalk competition, and a karaoke competition.

And as if that was not enough, there

will be outdoor water pistol fun and stalls selling Japanese food, comics, T-shirts, merchandise, toys, and other collectibles.

The organisation of the event expects to reach the attendance figures of the previous Manga event in Mijas, which was last held before the pandemic, when over 4,000 people passed through the doors.

Prizes for the competitions will be generous and varied, many of which are valued at €300, and will be awarded on the Sunday afternoon.

moments through her intuitive perspective.

With her pictures, she tries to show our world and our life as it is. Facets of life that seem to be hidden in the everyday and are often hardly perceived with the naked eye become visible and thus also ex-

perienceable through her photography.

The exhibition will be on display until October 18, offering visitors a magical experience with art, music, and more. The gallery is open from Monday to Friday from 10am until 5pm in Poligono Industrial Nueva Campana, 109, Marbella. Entry is free. Bebop & Swing

JAZZ saxophonist Enrique Oliver brings his Bebop Swing Quartet to Huber Art & Food in Estepona on Saturday, September 28.

While genres of music, such as Rhythm and Blues, never cease to develop and move on, what is termed R&B today has little to do with the sound of Stax and Motown in the ‘60s. Jazz also progresses forward, but for most musicians, Bebop and Swing remain the pillars that keep the genre together.

Enrique Oliver is one of those rare musicians capable of presenting an up-to-date face of Jazz, yet maintaining the sound firmly rooted in the Blue

Note sound of the last century. An impeccable concert is expected with a balanced mix of inspiration, technique, and emotion, and a superlative artistic approach to Jazz that should never be missed.

Playing his versions of standards and original compositions, saxophonist Enrique Oliver’s Bebob Swing Quartet plays Huber Art & Food in Estepona on Saturday, September 28 at 8pm. The entry fee on the door is €15 (cash) and reservations are recommended. Huber Art & Food can be found in Calle San Antonio 27, and reservations can be made by calling 608 359 656.

Think You Know About Rioja?

Joven: wines that have had no oak ageing.

Ok, everyone associates Spanish red wine with Rioja, but what most people don’t know is what it’s all about.

Well, Spain has 3 ways of labelling its wines; by grape variety, by brand or by region, so to give you an example, tempranillo is a grape variety, Rioja is a region, Vina Sol is a brand.

Now we could go into a lot of depth about Spanish wines, but we’re just going to start with everyone’s familiar choice, Rioja.

SO WHAT DOES ALL THAT TERMINOLOGY MEAN?

In 1926 Rioja established the first consejo regulador and so was the first Spanish wine to obtain Denominación de Origen (DO) status. The regulations govern many aspects of wine production but of most significance to wine drinkers are the rules specifying oak ageing:

Game coding

BEGINNING October 3, kids in Cartama between 6 and 17 years old will be able to sign up for fun programming and video game creation courses.

Crianza: wines must spend a minimum of one year in oak barrel and one in bottle before release.

Reserva: wines spend one year in oak barrel and two in bottle. Reserva wines are some of Rioja’s finest.

Gran Reserva: wines are usually made in the best vintages where the fruit quality is rich enough to support two years in oak barrel and three in bottle.

What can be confusing is that these are minimum regulations and each house does its own thing. The more premium wines will often spend much longer in oak.

So there you go, a little intro to what Rioja is about. There’s so much more to explore of the Spanish wine industry, but here’s a good starting point.

Cartama Council is hosting these activities aimed at two age categories: 6 to 10 years old and 11 to 17 years old. The courses are organised by the prize-winning organisation Educagamer.

The 6 to 10-year-olds will learn about the fundamentals of coding with the Lua language and a simple interface in which they can create manipulable moving images in a game format. Using characters from the

WARREN A Gilbank, a concert promotor with a thirst for saving the live music scene on the Costa del Sol, found time to chat with the Euro Weekly News to explain why we should all be buying concert tickets in advance.

The summer season was plagued with concert cancellations. What happened?

‘Smaller promotors rely on advance ticket sales. People are just not buying tickets in advance these days. You’ve either got the small ‘free’ gigs or the big luxury events like Starlite. This dynamic pricing that Oasis have used is outrageous. The original price of an Oasis Wembley ticket was £135, then they went up by 165% to £355.

What was the idea behind your company WAG Productions?

‘I went to a gig in Benalmadena and wondered if I could get the Jam’s Bruce Foxton to play Benalmadena. An acorn grew from an email and a year later, he played Benalmadena. What a night that was!’

And now The Magic Mod. Do foreign artists want to play the Costa del Sol?

‘Yes, but the problem is the advance ticket sales. Many artists need paying up front. Tony Hadley costs around €20,000, or Adam Ant, €30,000, to be paid before the night.

WAG Productions are promoting The Magic Mod for 4 nights on the Costa del Sol. Playing on October 3, Minelli’s, Benalmadena, October 4, Doyle’s Corner Bar, Torremolinos, October 5, Jolly Jack’s, Fuengirola and Cazbah Lounge, October 6 La Cala. Advance tickets cost €20.

Pink gnomes green city

ANTWERP’S city centre is turning pink, thanks to a quirky initiative from district authorities to encourage residents to make their neighbourhoods greener.

As part of the “Buurt in bloei” (Neighbourhood in Bloom) campaign, 1,000 pink garden gnomes are being given away at two central locations: the Operaplein and the entrance to the Left Bank pedestrian tunnel.

The campaign aims to inspire city dwellers to add plants and owers to their terraces, window boxes, and facades, helping to beautify the urban landscape.

Best student city

A EUROPEAN wide survey undertaken by The Campus Advisor found that Prague in the Czech Republic was the best city for students overall.

Interestingly the United Kingdom had more cities than any other country in the top 50 whilst Spain had ve candidates in the list with Granada taking fth place.

Each gnome comes with a QR code that provides information on how residents can create their own green spaces, including the opportunity to apply for a free facade garden from the district authority.

parcel of a nice green garden,” said project leader Anja van Stappershoef, speaking to VRT News.

“We want to encourage our residents to make their neighbourhood greener,” Stappershoef says.

Commuters passing through the Left Bank tunnel were pleasantly surprised by the whimsical giveaway.

“They just o ered me a pink garden gnome to brighten up my garden, that’s really nice,” Tine, one commuter, told VRT News.

Another commuter, Kato, said she was intrigued by the campaign’s digital element.

The “Buurt in bloei” campaign re ects Antwerp’s growing commitment to urban greening, encouraging residents to bring nature into the heart of the city.

Stairway showdown

ONE of Rome’s most iconic landmarks, the Spanish Steps, has sparked a legal and media controversy between France and Italy following a report by the French Court of Auditors.

The dispute revolves around France’s properties in Rome, with the report raising concerns about the maintenance of five French churches, including the Trinità dei Monti church, which stands atop the Spanish Steps.

While the report does not directly address the famous staircase, it highlights French involvement in the church’s upkeep, leading to a broader debate about the site’s ownership.

Historically, the Spanish Steps were commissioned by French kings, built with French funds, and designed by French architects.

This historical context

led to the French Court of Auditors affirming these facts, which some interpreted as a claim of French ownership over the Spanish Steps. linking them to France’s real estate portfolio in Rome. This portfolio, which includes 180 rental properties, generates €4.5 million annually for the French government. However, complicating the situation is that since the late 19th cen-

tury, the maintenance and restoration of the Spanish Steps have been handled by the City of Rome and the Italian State.

Interestingly, despite the name, Spain is not involved in this ownership debate.

The “Spanish Steps” derive their name from the adjacent Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Square), not from any historical connection to Spain itself.

The ndings were the result of extensive analysis of over 17,000 authentic ratings, reviews, and surveys submitted by students and the rankings were based solely on the data collected.

To reach the ranking for each city, a list of key factors was created which took into account the proportion of students in the population, academic environment, student friendliness, cost of living, cultural diversity, nightlife, public transport, amenities, safety, and more.

Prague just pipped Heidelberg (Germany) at the post to take the title and a typical reviewer commented “Prague is calm but exciting. Many places to visit and see. Located in heart of Europe makes it great for short trips and even local tourism.

“Nightlife is great. Endless opportuni-

Although many countries in Eastern Europe have much lower costs of living than their Western neighbours, this was an area where Prague lost out somewhat only being the 16th cheapest city in the list, beaten by neighbours Krakow, Budapest, Warsaw and the Czech city of Brno. Its other weak spot was cultural diversity, falling well behind the likes of Amsterdam, Berlin and London but overall it still managed to beat the other 49 contestants for overall top place.

The fourth edition of the fair featured a variety of Japanese-themed events such as Pokeball crafting, origami workshops, and hamma demonstrations. Visitors also enjoyed Japanese calligraphy, soft combat tournaments, card games, archery, and live role-playing.

Other highlights included Pokemon geocaching, an escape room challenge, dance sessions, film screenings, karaoke, and board games. Exhibitions of bonsai and kimonos added to the cultural richness of the event.

Mallorca Stranded Until Saved

A 33-year-old man found himself in need of help last Sunday, September 22 when exploring the coastline of Cala Morlanda, near Manacor. According to a report from the local fire service, firemen from the Parque de Manacor were deployed at around 11.40 that morning to assist lifeguards and police in the rescue of the man when he found himself trapped within a small coastal cave.

The man had entered the tiny cave of his own accord, but for some reason was unable to exit it without assistance, and was lucky to find himself with access to a bubble of air which enabled him to breath and kept him safe until the emergency services arrived.

Despite the rescue mission costing time and resources from the ambulance service, as well as the Manacor local police, the National police, the fire service and lifeguards, the man was reported to have been in a stable enough condition to walk away from the scene himself once he was free to

Spain’s castle crusade!

EVER fancied living in a castle?

Well, read on!

Spain’s iconic castles, perched majestically on rocky outcrops, have long captured the imagination of visitors. Yet the sorry state of many of these historic landmarks often fails to impress. Despite Castile’s name suggesting a land of castles, their lack of care has spurred little public debate.

Now a report hopes to shame the authorities into action. The aim is to map Spain’s entire castle inventory for the first time, flagging those near to ruin.

The Spanish Association of Friends of Castles lists over 10,000 castles, 6,000 dating back to the medieval and Renaissance periods, 200 verging on collapse.

While most castles are publicly owned, neglect is rampant due to funding shortages. Fortunately, some find new life as hotels, restaurants or even film sets, while others like Caudilla Castle in Toledo stand as crumbling relics, drawing amateur photographers

Walk without worry

IF your dog is frightened of other dogs, it’s important to take steps to prevent negative experiences that may deepen their fear. Remember, even the best-trained dogs can have unpredictable moments, so sticking to certain rules is crucial, especially in the beginning. Avoid taking your dog to crowded areas or dog parks, as these environments can overwhelm them.

Instead, focus on providing a safe buffer zone during walks. This might mean crossing the street, waiting at the top of a driveway for another dog to pass, or carefully stepping into the street to put a parked car between your pup and an approaching dog. Never yell at your dog or force interactions with other dogs; instead, comfort them and allow them to feel secure in your presence.

Be an advocate for your dog’s needs. If someone asks if their dog can say ‘hi,’ politely decline and continue your walk. With patience and understanding, you can help your dog feel more confident over time.

WORLD RABIES DAY, observed on September 28, raises awareness about rabies prevention and control. Rabies is a deadly virus that affects both animals and humans, typically transmitted through the bite of an infected animal.

Symptoms of rabies in dogs include fever, excessive drooling, aggression, difficulty swallowing, and paralysis. Once symptoms appear, the disease is almost always fatal. In

To protect your dog from rabies, ensure they receive regular vaccinations. The rabies vaccine is highly

Join in the 200th car run

THERE is great excitement ibn the classic and sportscar world as the Classic & Sportscar Club organise their 200th one-day Run on Saturday October 5.

The Club made it to 16 years old back in August and celebrated that with a dinner, a party and a special car run around the Malaga mountains.

Although this will be the club’s 200th Run, they have also organised over the past 16 years over 30 longer Tours varying in length from three to seven days plus ‘special’ one day events like their mid-week runs and their special Boxing Day Runs, which would add about another 250 days worth of motoring fun! But, who’s counting? It’s an amazing, dynamic club that sets the standards others try to follow!

Formed and still run by Ian and Carol Giles, the Club continues to go from strength to strength.

This special Run will start near Marbella and will finish at the fabulous Geranium Restaurante in La Cala de Mijas

where the organisers hope to have all the cars on show outside the restaurant.

The Run will probably be around 130 Km in length and will feature a breakfast start, both coffee and Cava stops en-route before enjoying a superb lunch prepared by super-Chef Steven Saunders.

To date, the Club is hugely oversubscribed for this special event but the organisers are sure all 50 cars will make the start and complete the Run in some beautiful countryside and see some spectacular Andalucian scenery.

Cars will depart the Marbella area at around 11.00am and should be back in La Cala de Mijas just before 3.00pm.

Fuel prices

FUEL prices in Spain have fallen again to new annual lows and return to affordable prices.

Since late September 2023, prices have dropped significantly, with petrol decreasing by nearly 15 per cent and diesel by more than 13 per cent, ending 2023 at their lowest levels of the year.

Currently, filling up a 55-litre petrol tank costs around €85.25, approximately €10 cheaper than the same time last year, when the cost was €95.20.

For diesel, the same tank now costs around €78, €11 less than in September 2023 when it was €89.10.

These lower prices bring fuel costs below what they were before the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

On February 22, 2022, diesel was priced at €1.479 per litre and petrol at €1.591 per litre, compared to the current €1.418 per litre of diesel and €1.55 per litre of petrol.

Diesel has been cheaper than petrol for 79 consecutive weeks, following its initial increase when diesel became more expensive than petrol from August 2022 until mid-February 2023. Since then, petrol has regained its position as the more expensive fuel.

In comparison to other European nations, Spain’s fuel prices remain below the EU and Eurozone averages.

The price of 95 unleaded petrol in Spain is currently below the EU average of €1.67 per litre and the Eurozone average of €1.716.

Similarly, diesel in Spain is cheaper than the EU average of €1.547 per litre and the Eurozone average of €1.567.

Fast for fame

A 29-YEAR-OLD man in Denmark is facing 86 charges for reckless driving, which he filmed himself; concerns raised over the fight for internet fame, especially among young drivers.

The Danish driver had been detained back in May, this year, for riding a motorcycle without licence plates and a valid permit; the police found a video camera on his helmet, which provided evidence of his illegal behaviour. After months of examining this footage and more from his future cases, the police went public with the 86 preliminary charges on Friday, September 13.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it,” said Amrik Singh Chadha from the police in eastern Denmark. “There is no doubt that it has been a big and

unconventional case for us to investigate.” The police stated that several of the driver’s videos had been posted on social media and shared with large groups of people. Two other reckless drivers had been identified and had their vehicles seized.

The 29-year-old is now likely to face a prison sentence for crimes including driving at high speed on motorcycles, riding on the rear wheel at high speed, and endangering others; as seen by the hours of the driver’s video footage. The police stated that several of the man’s videos had been posted on social media; they identified two others on the footage and seized their vehicles. The man could face a prison sentence.

THE FIRST COMPLETE ROLLSROYCE - THE SILVER DAWN

TEST

For the first 40 years of its existence, Rolls-Royce built only rolling chassis that fitted onto independent coachbuilders bodywork specified by the customer. It wasn’t until the late 1940s that the marque produced its first complete car – the Silver Dawn.

Although Rolls-Royce suspended car production between 1939 and 1945 to focus on building aero engines, most notably of course the Merlin for amongst other aircraft the Spitfire, design work on a new car continued in the background.

During the 1930s, Rolls-Royce offered three models, each of which included numerous parts that were unique to it and could not be shared between them. This significantly increased the manufacturing costs per car, which quickly became unsustainable during the austerity of the post-war years. Rolls-Royce therefore faced the problem of reducing production costs without compromising quality or per-

seems obvious now but back then it was somewhat of a revelation, there would be a new engine that could be offered in straight-four, six or eight-cylinder variants, and a single chassis that could be configured in variable dimensions. These ideas came together in a deve-

would be known as the ‘Rationalised Range’. In 1946, Rolls-Royce launched the first such model: the Silver Wraith. Like its predecessor, and indeed all the pre-war models, the Silver Wraith was a rolling chassis designed to be fitted with third-party, coachbuilt bodywork.

Rolls-Royce knew that to be commercially successful it needed a model that was less expensive and could be produced in greater numbers than was possible with traditional coachbuilding. So, for the first time in its history, Rolls-Royce decided to produce a complete car, with in-house coachwork.

an

The Silver Dawn, was launched in 1949, initially only as an export car and it finally became available in the UK in 1952. Of the 761 Silver Dawns produced, most were supplied with the ‘Standard Steel’ four-door saloon bodies produced in-house. But in deference to customer requirements, it was also offered as a rolling chassis, with some 64 coach-built examples completed until 1955.

As further proof of the Rationalised Range approach, by 1952, clients could specify both the smaller, complete Silver Dawn and larger Silver Wraith rolling chassis with automatic transmission. Indeed, the Silver Dawn would be among the very last Rolls-Royce models to be offered with a manual transmission.

AC Benahavis 1 v 4 El Canadon OB

THE game began with both keepers being tested with long range shots, resulting from neat passing football from the two sides. The visitors finally made the breakthrough from a free kick, scored by Martin Paolasso. Benahavis equalised through captain James Quinn, soon after the break, with a great goal following a neat move. Against a bout of pressure from the hosts, El Canadon took the lead again through Gustavo Chitero and, although Benahavis pressed hard for an equaliser, the visitors sealed the win with two late goals from Ruben Mendez.

Nerja Utd 1 v 7 Malaga WFC

This was a comprehensive display of dominance by last season’s league winners. After the visitors’ first early goal from new ‘boy’ Marcello, Nerja briefly fought back, Mike Corish equalising from a cleverly taken free kick. However, Malaga quickly reasserted their control, going in at half time with a 3-1 lead. After the break, Malaga piled on the pressure, scoring four more goals without reply and are looking a good bet for vying for the title once more. Malaga’s other scorers were Andres (2), Victor, Fran and Roberto, with Marcello netting his second.

The Brazilian striker has certainly earned the top prize at the Ballon d’Or ceremony on October 28 in Paris. His statistics in the Champions League are testimony enough to his worth.

At Madrid, Vinicius has

goals before half time, albeit one a deflection. The visitors tried to rally after the break, attempting to push forward more frequently, but a disallowed penalty appeared to kill their momentum. Mick Sweeney added a third for the home side, followed by a fantastic assist by Keith Bucknell creating a Tony Wells goal to make it four. Gary Seymour pulled one back for Malaga following a free kick but Wells struck again for Nerja to seal a convincing win.

been rising at the same pace as Real Madrid’s achievements. No longer a supporting role, now he’s top dog, decisive throughout last season, especially in the most nail-biting moments, including the two Champions League finals he played in, and in the last continental competition in which he was directly involved in scoring eleven of Real Madrid’s goals.

The toughest competition he faces in the race to lift the trophy are Bellingham, Mbappé, Carvajal

and old acquaintance Ro drigo Hernández at Man chester City.

Sportswear brand Nike, who plan to reopen their store on Madrid’s Gran Vía two days after the Ba llon d’Or ceremony, are in no doubt.

They will pay tribu te to the icon alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Mbappé. And they are said to be doing so with a gold shop front, including Vinicius Junior as their cen trepiece.
