Strictly 10s for Tasha

TAREK GHOURI, father of Tasha from Strictly, and local resident, is possibly the proudest dad in Malaga Province. He decided to let the Euro Weekly News in on some of the highs and lows of his daughter’s road to everyone’s hearts.

Tasha who was born with profound deafness, has managed to overcome the odds to become the nation’s sweetheart. At five years old, she was offered a cochlear implant to give her broader scope for communication.

She has since become one of the most celebrated women on TV, become an ambassador for numerous deaf charities and organisations, and has inspired deaf children as far a field as Malawi, showing them what they are capable of

despite their deafness.

Tarek says Tasha found her path in life at a very young age, sensing the vibrations from her favourite Steps DVD through the laminate flooring. Years later, this

led to her studying dance, and later embarking on a career as an influencer. But, what really captured the attention of talent scouts was when she modelled earrings for Asos with the exterior part of her implant showing.

Eventually she was selected to participate

on Love Island, something she had explained to her dad was for her to find ‘genuine love’. Two years after finishing joint fourth, Tasha and Andrew Le Page are still together today.

Wheely popular Ferris Wheel takes bow

ESTEPONA’S wheel takes a bow.

Estepona’s giant Ferris wheel, which stole the spotlight all summer, has nally rolled o the scenic Paseo Marítimo.

Installed back in August, the towering 40-metre ‘noria’ was meant to dazzle visitors for just over a month - but thanks to its

whirlwind of popularity - it kept turning right up until mid-October. Now, as workers dismantle its towering frame, many are wondering if this is truly goodbye or just a pause for a spin-o next year.

Locals and tourists alike were captivated by the amazing views from the Ferris wheel’s 14 air-con-

ditioned cabins, each capable of seating eight eager riders.

From sunset snaps to Instagram-worthy videos, the ‘noria’ quickly became the must-see sight of the summer.

What was planned as a brief stint turned into a longer run as demand kept rolling in, extending the ride’s stay until October 13.

But just as the dust settles from its departure, rumours are already swirling. Sources have hinted

The Ferris wheel’s spin on the scene was too much of a hit to disappear for good. With talk of a longer stay next year, residents and holidaymakers alike are crossing their ngers for another season of sky-high fun.

Black Friday jobs

TEMPORARY employment agency Randstad predicts the coming Black Friday and Cyber Monday will generate nearly 4,000 new jobs.

The imported US shopping event, Black Friday weekend, has become a full week of discounted prices in most stores in Spain as Christmas shoppers hurriedly try to snap up some discounted-priced gifts for the festive season. Because of this, many shops in Malaga Province will be looking for backup shop sta , warehouse operators, and logistics drivers. Many of those new hires will be kept on for the Christmas and January Sales period too.

So to respond to the traditional upsurge in consumption that traditionally occurs at this time of year, the main needs of logistics companies will be packers, warehouse sta , and bar and restaurant sta

The retail sector will be reinforcing its workforce with shop assistants, shelf llers, and customer service pro les, with whom they will be on the lookout for those with a good track record where communication skills are most valued along with a high level of English.

According to Randstad, in both the logistics sector and retail, companies are increasingly valuing candidates with proven digital skills and knowledge of digital platforms, especially in online retail companies.

At the national level, Randstad predicts that Black Friday will generate 117,000 hirings in Spain, 18.2 per cent more than at the same time in 2023.

Estepona’s wheel of fortune takes a bow, but could make a grand return next year!

Marbella traffic Sunday

IRONMAN traffic on Sunday, October 27: City braces itself as event shuts down streets.

One of the city’s biggest events, the Ironman, is set to roll into town on Sunday, October 27, but not without a hefty dose of traffic turmoil. With road closures expected to stretch from 6am until 3pm, city officials have planted a whopping 15 warning signs across strategic spots around town, giving residents a heads-up to prevent or at least minimise potential travel woes.

Iron-prep! Plan ahead or be left in the dust!

City authorities are urging drivers to get their routes sorted before the big day. The signs are meant to help the public navigate their way in and out of town as the Ironman takes over the streets. And why all the fuss, you ask? Well,

it’s the cycling discipline that’s the main issue, with riders taking over the city’s roads for the race’s entirety.

Digital dash! Online simulations for a smoother ride

To keep the chaos in check, the city’s Urban Planning delegation has

teamed up with local law enforcement, setting up an online traffic simulation on the Sigma platform.

A dedicated link will be posted on the city council’s website, allowing residents to map out blocked rou-

tes and find alternative paths through the Ironman obstacle course. The council’s spreading the word across its channels, hoping to keep the traffic jams at bay.

So, gear up, plan ahead, or risk getting caught in the iron grip of traffic trouble.

Dogged determination

TAIL-WAGGING news! Honey, the dog who went missing in Estepona on October 12, is finally back in her family’s arms - but not without some serious dogged determination from her owners.

Honey’s heartbroken family had left her in safe hands while they jetted off to Peru for a much-needed holiday. But while they were soaking up the sun, Honey made a daring escape near Estepona’s Charca de las Nutrias, sparking a massive search effort in the area. Ninety people joined to find her.

As soon as the family got wind of the escape, they dropped everything and dashed back to Spain, booking last-minute flights in a frantic bid to bring Honey home. After heart-wrenching days of hunting high and low, they finally tracked down their

runaway rover... inside a nearby house, right in the same neighbourhood where she first went missing. But here’s the twistthey had to hop a fence to get to her!

Desperate, Honey’s owners made the bold move of climbing over a wall to rescue her from the private property where she’d been hiding out. Had she been stolen? Their leap of faith paid off, and Honey is now safe and sound, back where she belongs.

The community of Estepona didn’t hold back in the search either. A huge group of around 90 locals banded together, scouring the area, posting on social media, and spreading the word like wildfire.

Honey’s back, her tail’s wagging, and her family couldn’t be more relieved.

ON Sunday October 27 at 03.00, Daylight Saving Time ends and the clocks will be turned back one hour to 02.00. There will be more light in the morning, however the dark nights will start to draw in.

Clocks go back Spain’s new driving points system

STARTING Monday, 4 November 2024, Spain will implement changes to its driving licence points recovery system, aiming to improve road safety. Drivers who have lost points will now need to complete 10 hours of training, divided into two parts: a seven-hour standard module and a three-hour course focused on speci c driving violations.

The standard module will include group sessions led by psychologists, featuring road safety education, and possibly testimonials from accident victims. The goal is to increase awareness and prevent future violations. The tailored section will address the driver’s speci c o ences, such as speeding or drink-driving.

Professional drivers, including those operating buses, taxis, ambulances and lorries, can take the recovery course once a year. However, private drivers are limited to once every two years, making it vital to complete the training carefully.

This update follows another change from Spain’s Dirección General de Trá co (DGT) this year, which now allows drivers to access their theoretical test results within an hour via the MiDGT app.

Expatriate drivers in Spain, particularly those driving for work, should be aware of these new rules. Stay informed about the latest tra c regulations to avoid penalties and ensure safer driving.

For more information, visit the DGT’s o cial website.

Transport strikes

TWO of the biggest unions in Spain have called road transport strikes for seven days over the next two months.

CCOO and UGT have called on road transport workers, including lorry, bus, and ambulance drivers, as well as members of the public in their own vehicles, to protest in favour of an earlier retirement age for drivers.

Strike organisers are demanding a change in the law on grounds of public safety, claiming that the rising age of retirement is far too high for many drivers and that there should be an exception in the retirement age for them.

The strikes are due to take place on Monday, October 28; Friday, November 11; November 28 and 29; and on December 5, 9, and 23. If, by the new year, their demands are not met by the government, the strike could continue inde nitely.

The demands of the unions are not without wiggle room for negotiation. They have already stated that semi-retirement or half days be considered until drivers have built up enough points to qualify for a full state pension.

“We ask for understanding from everyone in society for the negative e ects that the strike may cause, with which, ultimately, we are ensuring the road safety of everyone and a better quality of life for the working class.”

Triathlon tragedy

TRAGEDY occurred at the Torremolinos triathlon as two athletes suffered fatal heart attacks while competing.

The spirit of possibly the most attended sporting event on the Costa del Sol of the year was dampened by the deaths of two competitors just moments apart.

On Thursday, October 17, 5,000 participants from 80 countries took to the streets and coastline of Torremolinos for one of the toughest physical challenges on the sporting calendar at the Grand Final of the World Triathlon Series.

The atmosphere turned sour just after 4pm during the swimming section of the event when one of the competitors, a 71-year-old man from Mexico who had already complained of feeling unwell,

suffered a fatal heart attack in the water.

Moments later, the terrible news of a second death, that of a 57-year-old British man was also put down to cardiac arrest.

The families of both men asked the organisers not to cancel or postpone the rest of the event and not to hold a minute’s silence in their honour, but instead to hold a minute’s applause at the end of the day.

Four thousand of the total 5,000 participants were amateur athletes in a broad range of age categories. In the Torremolinos competition, the oldest categories are one for men between 90 and 94 years, and in the female category, 85 to 89 years.

Soroptimist awards Mijas

ON Thursday October 17, in Mijas, the third annual Soroptimist Awards once again shone a light on unsung heroes and proved that even small changes can make a big splash in the sustainability pond.

Under the slogan ‘Feed Your Optimism’, this year’s awards celebrated those who are making local food production greener, fairer, and tastier.

The initiative, launched by Soroptimist Internatio-

nal Costa del Sol in 2021, aligns with the United Nations’ push for a more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient food system. The awards challenge residents across Malaga Province to take a moment and reflect on their food choices. Are they consuming local, seasonal produce? Is their steak from a happy cow or is it time to switch to a veggie diet? The answers could shape the future of our planet.

As a branch of a global network of over 66,000 members across 120 countries, SI Costa del Sol is committed to empowering women and children through education and action. And they’re not just talking the talk - they’re walking the sustainable walk.

For those looking to join the movement, more information can be found on their website, www.costa delsol.soroptimist.es, or by emailing soroptimist.fsd@ gmail.com. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram to keep up with the latest from this force for good. Heroes come in many forms. And, sustainability often feels like a daunting challenge, but events like the Soroptimist Awards remind us that every local hero and every small step counts.

Cop Lamborghini

DO the Spanish Guardia Civil have a high-performance sports car capable of chasing down speeding criminals on the motorway?

It’s believable, right? The UK Police were spotted with a McClaren a few years ago, blue flashing lights, siren and all; Dubai police are said to have a Bugatti Veyron, while German police have been known to be in hot pursuit in a Mercedes-Benz Brabus Rocket; so why wouldn’t the Spanish Guardia Civil own a Lamborghini Huracán?

Or, at least that was the line of reasoning that went throu-

gh the heads of many in Marbella when they saw a half a million euro Lamborghini painted in Guardia Civil colours patrolling the streets of Marbella and San Pedro.

It all started when a company specialising in the sale and rental of luxury cars, Radikal World, launched a Lamborghini converted into a Guardia Civil patrol car. It’s a Lamborghini Huracán Sterrato. This vehicle is a special and limited edition of which only 1,499 units have been manufactured. Among its specifications, a 610 horse-

Local jackpot winner!

IT was a day to remember for one lucky shopper in Marbella, who bagged over half a million euros in the Eurojackpot draw. The ONCE lottery’s mega European draw, a favourite among Spanish punters and those across 18 other European nations has speckled a bit of magic on the sunny streets of Marbella.

The winning ticket, raking in a cool €540,207, was sold at a supermarket on Calle Coto los Dolores in the upscale Urbanización Don Carlos area.

The supermarket, an official partner of ONCE, turned into a hotspot of celebration as news of the win spread. The lucky ticket holder was just two ‘soles’ (complementary numbers) shy of scooping up the entire €32 million jackpot! Close, but no cigar, yet still a life-changing win.

This Eurojackpot tale is a classic case of close but no jackpot, with the winner missing the big one by a hair’s breadth. But with €540,000 in their

power engine and its 260 kilometres per hour as top speed stand out most.

The company added decorations to transform it into a vehicle of the Guardia Civil as part of the October 12 celebrations. It is an authorised collaboration, as usually it would be totally illegal to decorate a car with the logos of the Guardia Civil without authorisation. This Lamborghini went through the streets of Marbella on October 12, and many locals were surprised when they ran into it.

pocket, it’s safe to say they won’t be complaining. And who knows, the next spin of the Eurojackpot wheel might just turn another Marbella resident into an overnight millionaire.

Big dreams, big wins

It’s a big week for the Costa del Sol, with a mix of near-miss millions and hopeful new jobseekers. As for the lucky Marbella winner, it’s time to start dreaming of how to spend that €540,000 windfall.

And with the Eurojackpot in town, it seems that anything is possible - just ask the lucky ticket holder on Calle Coto los Dolores!

Fast-track Torrequebrada

THE new commuter train station for Torrequebrada is back on track to take passengers to the centre of Malaga.

After years in the waiting, disputes, and delays, the project is said to be a done deal already with the budget to build already signed off. There will be no need to wait much longer for the construction to finally begin as Benalmadena Council has decided to fund the project themselves without need for central government grants.

The new site will be on Adif’s grounds (the railway’s owner) and consist of two platforms and sheltered area with a ticket machine. One of Adif’s stipulations is that the new station has a siding for parking trains and a green area to keep the place from appearing unsightly. Added to the pro -

ject will be a car park for up to 70 vehicles, the plot for which has already been assigned by the council.

One of the main hopes is that the station will serve new residents of the Nueva Torrequebrada estate where currently 5,000 homes are under construction.

While a bus line already exists, local residents have been calling for the train stop on the C1 line for over 10 years.

The decision by Benalmadena Council to assume all costs without more delays from applying for government grants, takes the plan much closer to becoming reality. A realistic timescale for completion is yet to be released, but council officials are confident the project will be up and running in the next couple of years.

Luxury yacht blaze

SMALL luxury yacht inferno at Puerto Banus! Fire brigade to the rescue as flames engulf boat in Marbella’s glam harbour.

A lazy Sunday afternoon in Puerto Banus turned into a fiery drama when a luxury yacht went up in flames at the prestigious Pier 8 on Sunday, October 20. The blaze broke out just before 4.30pm, catching the attention of sunseekers and tourists in the glamorous marina.

The boat can be seen burning in an Instagram video posted under the handle @marbellasequeja oficial.

Marbella’s emergency services were flooded with calls, as plumes of thick smoke billowed over the coast. At around 4.25pm, 112 confirmed the chaos: a boat had caught fire, sending panic across the pristine waters of the Costa del Sol.

All hands on deck! The alarm tri -

ggered a swift response from the Local Police, the fire brigade, and even the Guardia Civil. The firefighters arrived in record time, racing against the clock to bring the fire under control. By 4.40pm, they had the situation managed, ensuring the blaze didn’t spread to neighbouring yachts.

Despite the dramatic scenes, no injuries were reported, lucky for those aboard and nearby. Sources on the scene were quick to praise the fire brigade’s efficiency in containing the situation.

This is not the first fire involving vehicles on the Costa del Sol in the past few weeks.

Community conquers La Concha for Prostate Cancer awareness

CLIVE MARKS, founder of the charity ‘Don’t Be a Man’, led an inspiring climb up La Concha, alongside a dedicated group from the Costa del Sol community, in a remarkable effort to raise awareness for prostate cancer. The event, held with tremendous local support, saw participants tackling the iconic peak to not only promote awareness but also raise vital funds for the cause.

The climb generated more than €2,000, enough to fund PSA blood tests for 100 men, a crucial tool in the early detection of prostate cancer. A huge thank you goes out to everyone who contributed to the success of the event, particularly Dempsey’s Irish Bar for their incredible support in hosting and sponsoring the fundraiser, with special

thanks to Dylan Dempsey and his team.

A lively atmosphere was ensured by Tubbs & Dolly Tyler, while JC Paella Man kept everyone satisfied with delicious food. Generous raffle prizes were donated by local businesses, including Coriander Indian-Mexican Restaurant in Calahonda, Jamie Olive, Village Retreat, The House Hair -

On brink of extinction!

IT’S a race against time to save the Andalucian Wildcat (‘gato montés’), from the brink of extinction. Environmental group Ecologistas en Acción is calling out the Junta de Andalucia for dragging their feet while this elusive predator faces a rapid decline in numbers.

The group has formally requested that the Andalucian Council of Biodiversity include a hot topic in their next meeting - the dire situation of the wildcat. The local feline is a world away from your typical house cat, with thicker whis kers and a bushy, stubby tail. But its future looks bleak, and ‘Ecologistas en Acción’ is sounding the alarm!

In a statement issued Friday, October 18, the ecologists laid out their demands, calling for a thorough review of the wildcat’s historical population trends, current numbers, and the urgent steps needed to stop the decline. They argue that several scientific studies, along with data from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (‘Consejería de Sostenibilidad y Medio Ambiente’), paint a grim picture: the wildcat is in “serious de

cline,” possibly facing extinction across much of its former territory.

The group insists that it’s high time for a scientific and technical review of the wildcat’s status before it’s too late. They want measures on the table, from legal protections to active conservation strategies, to turn the tide and secure a brighter future for this whiskered wonder.

It’s a classic case of “too little, too late,” say the ecologists. Will Andalucia wake up to the wildcat’s SOS before it’s too late? Or will this magnificent predator slip away, leaving the hills and forests eerily silent? The wildcat’s fate hangs in the balance, and the next move is up to the

Climber heroically rescued

A POLISH climber had to be saved by an emergency mountain rescue team after a heart-stopping accident left him stranded halfway up a towering 300-metre cliff in El Chorro.

The high-altitude shock unfolded on Thursday, October 17 in the afternoon when the unnamed adventurer was climbing the notorious Blue Line route. Things took a dramatic turn when he suffered a suspected broken leg, leaving him clinging for dear life on the sheer rock face.

Enter Spain’s Guardia Civil’s Grupo de Rescate e Intervención en Montaña (Greim), based in Alora, a small town just off the Costa del Sol.

With the chopper unable to land on

the rugged terrain, the officers had to drop in and scale their way to the injured climber, who was perched precariously hundreds of metres above ground.

After reaching the stricken mountaineer, the rescuers worked quickly to secure his injured leg. Then came the hair-raising descent: a 150-metre rappel down the cliff face, bringing the climber safely back to stable ground. Once safe and sound, he was whisked away to a nearby hospital, where he’s expected to make a full recovery. This daredevil’s brush with disaster proves that sometimes, what goes up must come down. Albeit, with a little help from Spain’s finest.

Million-packed promise! Economic boost set to pour in.

Forget about a trickle; this Ironman’s bringing in a tidal wave of cash! This year’s event is expected to pump a cool €10 million into the city’s economy in just one day. But the real jackpot comes next year

Saudi eyes Sotogrande

The current owners have decided to sell up and move on.

SOTOGRANDE, one of the most select holiday and residential villages on the south coast, is up for sale.

Homeowners in the most select luxury and salubrious residential district on the Costa del Sol have been left wondering just who will take the reins of the urbanisation. Orion Capital has decided to sell up and move on, leaving behind a five-star hotel, high-end homes, two golf courses, an equestrian centre, and a marina, among other assets. International property investors

are currently pitching their interests for the prime real estate.

During the pandemic lockdown, many trapped there decided to make the place their home rather than just a holiday destination. The local registry shows massive growth in the population between 2019 when there were 2,208 residents and in 2022, when there were 3,572.

Sources indicate that the latest potential buyer to show an interest in acquiring the site has arrived from Saudi Arabia, but their

identity is a mystery so far.

Negotiations are said to be ongoing, but all indicators suggest that the Middle Eastern bidder is the most keen to strike a deal.

With Sotogrande’s figures filed with the commercial registry showing a 22 per cent decrease in profits and the Orion group already working on numerous other big real estate investments in Spain, it’s time to move on. For those looking to take the helm, it will likely be someone wanting a long-term acquisition.

Should mobiles be banned in schools? Your

IT seems that phone usage in schools is somewhat of a contentious subject across Europe, with countries adopting different stances on the matter.

For example, France recently decided to trial a complete ban on mobile phones in 200 secondary schools, requiring that students hand over the devices during morning reception.

If proven successful, they intend to implement the ban in all schools starting in January 2025.

Conversely, in Hungary a teacher was forced to resign when he refused to implement the government’s ban on smartphones in classrooms.

In response, thousands of Hungarians gathered in Budapest to protest against his removal, arguing that banning phones is an outdated model that does not reflect modern society.

England is the latest country to put their head above the parapet on this matter. Their government has just ruled out imposing a ban on the use of mobile phones in schools, despite growing concern from parents and teachers. Instead, they have shifted the responsibility to teachers, claiming they already have the authority to control mobile device use in classrooms and that it would not be practical for the state to step in.

As far as Spain is concerned, the rules vary between autonomous communities. For example, Castilla-La Mancha was one of the first to ban phones in the classroom. In

Galicia, they banned the use of phones within the grounds of all schools from January 2024. However, phones and tablets are permitted in Madrid, but only for educational purposes.

With such divided opinions, Euro Weekly News asked their readers: “Should mobile phone use be banned in schools?”

Quite a number of readers were quick to say ‘yes,’ including Carole Penman, who added, “Yes, they are there to learn, not play.”

Others, like Christine Boyden, also agreed, stating, “I see no reason for them needing them while they are in school. It is a total distraction from schoolwork. Hand in and collect at the end of the day.”

Karen Poland shared: “My daughter’s school requires them to hand them in on arrival and get them back as they leave. Failure to hand them in results in detentions. The school understands that the children who come in by bus need phones to notify parents of delays etc.”

However, Deb Horses expressed a different view: “NO! Teach kids to use them as a place to find information for class. The teacher asks a question; the student looks for answers. The first to answer is the winner. Learn to use it as a positive tool!”

Hans Reis posed an interesting question when he said: “If we say yes, do we turn off our phones at work?”

New design for Plaza

WORKS have begun on remodelling the streets of Plaza de La Nogalera, Torremolinos, improving accessibility, equipment and paving.

Due to be completed in 2025, the initial budget of the project is around €3 million

and is intended to make the area into a functional space which invites pedestrians to stroll in, adding green areas, numerous fountains and shade structures. All these elements have been designed with a unifying formal crite-

rion, being predominantly organic with curved lines providing dynamism and lightness.

In the plan there will be supports for shading and sensors that improve the integrated elements, such as, intelligent irrigation, foot-traffic counting, digital signage, lighting regulation sensors and electricity consumption, as well as the installation of other elements for points of information and management.

The linear set of fountains includes an 11-metre long programmable digital water curtain and benches, accompanying the route for shoppers to take a rest and cool down by the rushing water.

More dogs, less kids

OVER the last few years, the trend of having dogs or cats instead of children has been on the rise, changing the face of the traditional Costa del Sol family.

In the Malaga Province, there are already three times more pets than there are children under the age of 10, according to the Malaga College of Veterinarians. 518,331 dogs, cats, ferrets, and others are included in the statistics, against 154,220 children 10 years old or under.

The figures, while curious, raise a foreboding demographic crisis facing the province. For the first time in nearly 50 years the annual number of human births has dropped below 12,000 in the Malaga Province, well below the 1970s when it was above 19,000 with a total population half of what it is now.

The decision of people not to have children or to delay parenthood is reflected in a broader and more complex trend that covers various social, economic, and cultural factors. A higher cost of living, professional ambitions, and work/life balance are among the reasons given for preferring to not have kids.

Malaga Province continues to grow in population though, with almost twice as many residents as 40 years ago, but mostly through the influx of foreigners. In the first quarter of 2024, Malaga Province gained 3,226 more residents, according to the INE.

Over 23 per cent of them were born outside of Spain, while the national average is just 18 per cent.

Discounts to disappear

CURRENTLY, public trans port offers various dis counts and bonuses, often reducing costs for travellers by up to 60 per cent and in some cases, offering completely free travel. These discounts have previously been applied to local train services and medium distance tra ins, as well as to the metro service in Madrid and some bus travel companies (Alsa and Samar). However, these are soon to come to the end of the line. On December 31, existing concessions will be come void.

Since 2022, discount cards for Renfe Cercanías (local trains) have been free as rail services vowed to facilitate more efficient transport methods due to the energy crisis sparked by conflicts in Ukraine. The scheme offered travellers unlimited travel, with a maximum of four journeys per day to use anywhere between a chosen departure and arrival station. Only costing between

€10 to €20, the pass could be used on Cercanías, Rodalíes (train service in Catalonia), short distance transport services and medium distance trains.

From the end of 2024, this bonus will no longer be available and nor will certain subsidies offered by the Central Government and by Madrid’s governing body for

travel on Madrid’s extensive metro line.

To avoid backlash, Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente has guaranteed that free services will continue for more vulnerable members of society and that discounts for young people or frequent users of public transport will be maintained.

Wild horses

REWILDING Spain, an animal conservation NGO, is hoping to reintroduce a horse species in danger of extinction back into the Spanish countryside.

The Przewalski horse, also known as Takhi, is a direct descendant of the first domesticated horses in prehistory, and today, only about 2,000 to 3,000 remain in nature, distributed across Mongolia, China, and Russia, as well as in some zoos.

Spain is leading the field in the recovery of the Przewalski horse, undoubtedly the pride of global biodiversity projects.

Rewilding Spain is promoting a programme to extend the population of this species of wild equine at their farm in Villanueva de Alcorcón (Guadalajara), where they currently keep 26 specimens.

If their plan gets the go-ahead, the Przewalski horses of Guadalajara will be the only herd that is roaming freely in all of Europe, with the exception of the Chernobyl exclusion zone.

The benefits, Rewilding Spain points out, are that in their diet and movements, horses eat biomass such as forest undergrowth, which helps prevent

a species under threat.

forest fires. As well, they say, with the trend for eco-tourism, they could attract lucrative tourist numbers eager to see them in the wild.

Rewilding Spain continues to campaign as Spanish legislation does not currently allow the presence of wild horses, and, therefore, a reintroduction into the natural environment cannot be carried out yet.

The animals are classified under Spanish law as ‘livestock’ and so, not permitted to be released.

The cheated heiress

CLEOPHEE HERRMANN, who inherited €11 million, now works at a kebab shop in Colmar in the east of France to support her young son.

The 34-year-old, whose mother died in 2001, was cheated out of her inheritance by her cherished ‘stepmother’ Josianne Seiler, who will serve a 30-month prison term imposed by a Colmar court on October 17.

She entered the young woman’s life as the mother of Cleophee’s best friend’s, later befriending the girl’s widowed father and leading a ‘sumptuous’ lifestyle paid for by the family’s money.

All of this went to Cleophee on her grandmother’s death in 2008 and Josianne Seiler, having inveigled her way into the girl’s affections, continued to take advantage of her ‘emotional emptiness’.

She manipulated the young girl, who had an ea-

ting disorder and suffered from depression, for years, even using a medium and an African sorcerer with ‘supernatural’ powers, to contact Cleophee’s dead mother.

Eventually the money ran out and by the time Cleophee’s father died in 2021, Seiler and her daughters had distanced themselves from her.

After meeting Seiler’s ex-husband, who revealed that his former wife had

ruined him, she took legal action alleging ‘abuse of weakness’.

As well as a 30-month sentence, Seiler was ordered to pay Cleophee €5.1 million. Her daughters, Mathilde Hickel and Jullia Hickel, received 12-month suspended sentences and must pay their ‘stepsister’ €320,000.

“This is retribution and a relief,” Cleophee declared on emerging from the Colmar court.

OVER 200 years after the Battle of Trafalgar, a memorial service has been held at the Trafalgar Cemetery in Gibraltar.

The ceremony took place on October 18 marking the sea battle which was fought on October 21 1805 between the navies of France and Spain and rival British naval forces.

Trafalgar remembered

The special ceremony was attended by residents of Gibraltar, as well as some renowned faces. Local dignitaries including the Governor; Lieutenant General Sir Ben Bathurst, the Chief

Minister, Fabian Picardo, Commander British Forces Gibraltar (CBF) Commodore Tom Guy, the Mayor Carmen Gomez, and British Forces Gibraltar representatives. Members of the Royal Navy

commemorated the occasion by laying wreathes at the foot of the statue of Admiral Lord Nelson and Commanding Officers of the Royal Navy and Commanding Officer of Gibraltar Squadron did the same inside the cemetery.

Prayers and blessings

were read at the memorial service, led by Chaplain Father Danny Hernandez and Sir Ben, the Chief Minister and Commodore Guy also participated in delivering readings and orations. The ceremony closed with a bugle rendition of the Last Post, prompting a

two-minute silence before concluding the service. Taking place in Cape Trafalgar in southwestern Spain, the Battle of Trafalgar ended with a British victory, allowing Britain to maintain its status as world’s largest sea power, which it had held for 100 years. Britain’s winning fleet were captained by Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson who was killed in the conflict.

France’s border controls

AS Europe like the rest of the world starts to raise questions about national safety, France has become the latest country to announce that it will be implementing border checks at its frontier with Luxembourg.

In the midst of world conflict, this comes as no surprise, yet it’s indisputably a sad and worrying sign of worse to come. Not only has France chosen to introduce this security measure with Luxembourg borders, but also with five other neighbouring countries as it tightens its belt against fears

of terrorist attacks.

The move will take place between November 1 2024 to April 2025 and will include Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Spain. It will not only include land controls, but also air and sea routes, which will inevitably affect travel.

The emerging picture is one of the EU gradually fracturing into individual nations, with restricted free movement, as countries within the Schengen area increasingly adopt border controls with their neighbours.

The French government

listed the following motives for enforcing border controls for the European Commission: “Serious threats to public policy, public order, and internal security posed by high-level terrorist activities, the growing presence of criminal networks facilitating irregular migration and smuggling, and migration flows that risk infiltration by radicalised individuals.” The situation mirrors Germany’s decision to reinstate border checks with Luxembourg and is among eight countries to have followed this initiative.

Aura top scorer

GERMANY has a cool but quirky tradition: the annual ‘Youth Word of the Year’. Each year young locals vote for the word they have enjoyed using most, and anything goes, as long as it does not have racist, homophobic or sexist implications.

This year, the chosen word was ‘aura’, which has been popularly used to describe the energy or charisma that an individual exudes and is usually accompanied by either a plus + (positive) sign or a negative – sign [Zeit Online, 19/10/2024].

In Spain, youngsters are more likely to use the word ‘vibe’.

The word ‘aura’ rose to famous status after it was used in an advertising campaign for a credit card company and then by the New York Times to describe Dutch football champion Virgil

van Dijk, according to youth word managers at Langenscheidt Verlag, which runs the yearly competition. The US press wrote ‘Solutions are expensive –an aura is priceless’, and the word became a favourite in the world of sport.

The competition has only been handed over to German youngsters fairly recently, as up until 2019 anybody could vote, no matter their age.

However, the winning word often caused hilarity amongst youngsters, who deemed the results of the poll to be inaccurate, so in 2020 the vote was handed over exclusively to those aged between 11 and 20 years old.

This ensures that the word chosen is a genuine reflection of young people’s vernacular, and is truly representative of language culture and development across the country.

Finland’s music scene

‘THE Music Listening in Finland’ 2024 survey, commissioned by IFPI Finland and Teosto and conducted by Norstat, polled over 1,000 Finns between the ages of 13 and 75. The study aimed to shed light on Finnish music fans’ listening habits and dedication to the Finnish music industry.

The survey revealed that Finland is home to two million music enthusiasts, with more than 50,000 identified as superfans.

Superfans are not the same as other fans. They are far more dedicated to their favourite artists and will pay to join online fan

communities, purchase exclusive concert tickets, and actively engage with other fans online. “Superfans show exceptional dedication, travelling long distances for concerts and actively engaging in fan communities,” says Kari Tervonen, Roadmap Director at Omnicom Media Group. “Their commitment plays a crucial role in shaping the music industry, as record companies increasingly look to tap into this passionate demographic.”

Superfans are closely followed by what is deemed as ‘Hardcore fans.’

Hardcore fans are those

who collect merchandise and follow their favourite artists on free social media platforms. They are only a step away from becoming superfans. Hardcore fans will often sign up to their favourite artist’s newsletters and will purchase tickets as soon as they become available.

The survey discovered that Finnish-language pop is the favourite genre followed closely by hip-hop/ rap. Finnish music artists have made an impact during 2024 with many local artists topping the charts on Spotify.

Speaking EuropeanMonique Rittstam

The first time that Monique Rittstam travelled from her home in Sweden to Marbella was 1998, when she and her parents enjoyed their first holiday in Spain.

THE two ladies enjoyed the beach whilst Monique’s father enjoyed the golf although everyone ended up with sunburn but that didn’t stop them from returning regularly

As Monique explained, “after my mother decided to move to Marbella permanently, it seemed crazy to keep travelling to see her, so I decided it was time to move and settled in my favourite Spanish city in 2007.

“Much as I loved Sweden and the people, it was the weather that was the final decider and I am so pleased that I made the move, so much so that if people ask if I miss home, I say this is home.”

Monique set up New Age Beauty in Marbella, within walking distance of her apartment and her favourite assistant is

help by greeting customers.

The business which offers everything a woman needs is popular but according to Monique “we were inundated by customers from The Netherlands who came over for the recent Marbella 4 Days Walking event.”

Although Monique speaks a number of languages including Spanish, she is careful to keep away from local bureaucracy by entrusting everything to a local and efficient Gestor.

When asked if she would advise other Swedes to settle in Marbella the answer was an unequivocable yes but warned “you will miss being able to turn on the tap and enjoy fresh, clear, drinking water.”

France’s ageing reality

AN ageing population, led by the oldest president in French history, mirrors the broader European demographic trend where older generations are increasingly dominating resources, often at the expense of younger workers and investors Today, 20 per cent of the French population is over 65. This has increased from 13 per cent in 1970 and by 2070, will be almost one third of the country’s inhabitants. Perhaps a parallel to this demographic was the appointment of Michel Barnier, the oldest prime minister who had replaced 35-year-old Gabriel Attal, the youngest ever prime minister. One can’t help but consider this parallel as hugely

as the coun try’s demographics are rapidly shifting into an increasingly ageing population. This trend has become ever more apparent since the 2010s as the baby boom generations began turning 60. According to the French National Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE), the trend is more pronounced as the birth rate of French citizens is declining rapidly. In 2023 France recorded a 20 per cent reduction in recorded births than in

2010.

While French over 65s can look forward to more years of comfortable living, there are challenges that will become more unavoidable as time pushes on. This may become a European-wide issue with more countries predicted to follow suit. There will undoubtedly be further dependence on the government purse already spending a quarter of public spending on pensions.

Ruff justice judgement

IN a landmark ruling, Spanish judges have taken the emotional attachment to pets seriously in divorce cases. After already awarding custody of pets and even ordering ‘pet maintenance’ payments, a court has now made history by compensating a woman for being deprived of contact with her dog.

The judge ruled that her ex-partner must pay €600 in damages and cover legal costs for denying her access to their shared Siberian husky for 10 months.

The couple had initially agreed to share custody, but the plaintiff’s ex broke the arrangement. The court has now ruled she can care for the husky every other month. The judge noted that depriving the plaintiff of her beloved pet had caused significant distress, especially during a time of personal health issues. This decision sets a major precedent in pet custody cases across Spain.

You’ll recall that pets are now on a tight leash under strict new Spanish animal welfare laws. Beware

Europe’s biggest pumpkin

LUDWIGSBURG, Germany, was witness to a curious sight last week as host to the European Pumpkin Championship 2024.

This year’s weigh-in was held on October 13, a number which turned out to be lucky for Belgian Mario Vangeel. The 50-year-old pumpkin enthusiast brought to the festival a pumpkin weighing an astonishing 1,152kg, which is the equivalent combined weight of two average sized horses.

Mario claims that he had been blessed this year with a quality seed and ideal weather conditions, supported by his own personal recipe for fertiliser which he keeps as a guarded secret to his success.

The annual pumpkin festival was held this year at Ludwigsburg Palace and

showcased some 450,000 specimens of squash from 600 varieties available, with colourful and creative sculptures made from the pumpkins and mouth-watering squash-based dishes.

According to Guy Watson of Riverford, an organic vegetable box scheme based in the south-west of England, 14 million pumpkins go in the bin every Halloween uneaten, creating 18,000 tons worth of waste. Guy recommends opting for the many other varieties of squash available, which are much tastier and add to the Halloween character due to the weird and wonderful shapes on offer. He suggests decorating the outside of the squash so that the creepy decoration can then double up as a delicious meal.

De La Rue can now inject £30 million (€35.9 million) into its pension scheme, plus an additional £12.5 million (€14.9 million) in deficit repair contributions up to April 2027. According to Reuters, De La Rue has also agreed with the pension trustee not to return capital to shareholders until the pension scheme is entirely de-risked.

Shares rose by 13 per cent on October 16 at the prospect of a deal that would exceed Tate & Lyle’s current £2.8 billion (€3.35 billion) market value.

Not selling

BRITISH private equity company Alchemy is not selling its 41 per cent stake in global olive oil producer Deoleo, which owns Spain’s Carbonell. Although the deal struck when the group completed its recapitalisation in 2020 allows Alchemy to sell its stake in December 2024, there were no plans to sell over the next two years, the firm said.

We love Lucy

MARBELLA MOMENTS

I’VE had so much feedback from my column on how to survive the public health system when you’re in hospital. I’m relieved it was useful information and I’m very sorry to hear how many people have suffered from not knowing.

Good news this week: Lucy is doing great! She’s probably one of the bravest people I’ve ever met and one of the kindest.

There’s a large WhatsApp group as a testament to that, each one hanging on every word of her progress leading up to, during and following the operation, coordinating visiting times to ensure she’s not alone.

It’s always particularly heart-warming to see how Lucy and her sisters, albeit so very different, come together as one tight unit to support each other, even when hosting a party, more so now than ever to ensure Lucy needs for nothing.

I am but one of the many and It’s been no effort to be there for her. Lucy

Everyone loves Lucy.

has never asked to be on TV or for my help, not even to drive her to the many doctors’ appointments or any of the many things that as a Spanish speaker I could’ve (and would’ve) helped her with.

Until now it’s really been a very one-sided friendship with her messaging me every morning and night for years to check on me and see if I’m okay.

I do have a beautiful family but I am the end of the line, so Lucy for me is a breath of fresh air; she never judges me and accepts me exactly as I am for the good, bad and sometimes indifferent when I’m ‘busy’.

It’s so easy to love Lucy! Get well

OTHERS THINK IT

DREAMS are funny things. Not generally being one who experiences nightmares (unless I’ve had a good old blue cheese late night overdose!) I usually drift off looking forward to what the next few hours of La La land has to offer. Sometimes I fly; what buzz that can be.

Occasionally I fall gloriously in love. I often find myself negotiating narrow ledges and subsequently plummeting from a great height. In fact, at one time this dream was so frequent, that now and again I would allow myself to actually hit the ground, just to see what happened. (Presumably nothing, as I was still lying in bed unscathed the following morning!) I’ve had tea with the Queen, talked my way out of some serious trouble and travelled in a spaceship.

Well folks all these nocturnal journeys pale in the light of the trip I took the other night. In an experience that was beyond my wildest dreams, (geddit!) I dreamt I was ha-

ving an illicit affair with Britain’s finance minister Rachel Reeves! Yeah yeah, I know, I lied about the nightmares right!? Well, be that as it may, there I was in a packed hall, trying to blend into the background while she addressed the party conference.

After the meeting we both slipped off to the hotel and... No no, actually I didn’t - it wasn’t that much of a hallucination!

Oddly our bedroom seemed to be filled by what appeared to be large numbers of OAPs; no doubt hoping to jump in and warm up a bit! Anyway the real problem was me not rising to the occasion - in the circumstances pretty understandable, since this cold individual hasn’t actually managed to rise to the occasion since they were elected! Heaven help the UK with her approaching Budget nightmares.

A couple of Viagras would probably have got me out of trouble. She’ll need a great deal more than that to regain her popularity.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the readers and friends who have written conveying their condolences and commisera-

tions on the passing of my beautiful and beloved companion Nora.

I received so many it may take some time to answer them all. However I can write in true honesty they gave a tremendous boost in the easing of my sorrow and sadness at her early demise. So thank you all again.

Nice to know there are still a tremendous number of good and caring people still out there in this sometimes precarious and oft non compassionate world of ours.

Finally with the approach of the winter season I would like to thank all the venues who have used the ol’ boy for a bit of entertainment this past summer.

See y’all next year. I am also looking forward to the overall release of my new recording of ‘Santa’s Here’. Reactions have been quite superb. It is already available on a number of outlets, including Spotify and UTube. Give it a whirl and let me know what you think.

Portugal’s popular Golden Visa

PORTUGAL’S Golden Visa continues to attract expatriates, with over one million foreign residents in 2023, a 33.6 per cent increase from the previous year. The scheme has seen a surge in demand, especially among US citizens, who filed 567 applications - a 162.5 per cent rise. The UK followed with 234 applications, while China, Brazil and India also contributed significantly.

Global uncertainties and post-Brexit challenges have driven expatriates to Portugal, drawn by its secure investment options, access to the EU market, and desirable lifestyle. Over 63 per cent of expats settle in Lisbon, Faro, and Setúbal, with Brazilians making up 35.3 per cent of the foreign population.

Portugal’s Golden Visa offers residency in exchange for property or business investments, with a lower investment threshold than some EU countries. A minimum contribution of €200,000 to cultural heritage in low-density areas qualifies for the visa, making it accessible to a broader audience.

However, rising housing costs and growing competition for properties are challenges. Nonetheless, Portugal’s favourable climate, affordable transport, and tax benefits for property investors continue to make it a magnet.

ELLIOTT told the Euro Weekly News that in the 10 years Olivia’s had been open, he had never experienced food of this calibre before. Call it kismet, call it chance, but three of the best top international chefs have just found their home at Olivia’s with the opportunity and the drive to create something diners have been crying out for. Gone are the egos of the chef deciding what customers are going to like. Gone are the strict four starters, four mains formality of eating out at a fine dining eatery; in comes what the customer fancies; in comes eat as little as and as much as the diner likes, while sharing the best there is. There’s a noticeable casual Spanish style of eating together with surprising international flavours

on the palate. Elliott was eager for the Euro Weekly News to meet the revolutionaries performing this culinary coup d’état. Three chefs leading the charge who have broken the shackles of their previous Michelin-starred restaurants with hot concepts in culinary proposals adapted to the latest in relaxed dining demands: executive chef of the Elliot Wright group, David Gallagher; newly appointed head chef of Olivia’s, Ryan McCabe; and the gifted Icelandic chef Michael Pétursson, head chef of Elliott’s other restaurant Eduardo’s in Orihuela, Alicante.

Elliott Wright makes no bones about the fact that he previously had trouble nailing down the right talent in his kitchens. Now, he has searched the world, bringing in talent from Dublin, Reykjavik, London, Cape Town, and beyond to find just the right combination of talent with a hunger to provide the most outstanding fare for customers bored of the mundane ceremony of the traditional restaurant.

The demands of the three don’t come cheap. First things first, a new €200,000 radically rebuilt kitchen is on the way, opening up to the dining area with a seamless farm to kitchen to table experience.

Chef David Gallagher explained the new concept to the Euro Weekly News. Previously, he mentions, the fare at Olivia’s was anglo-centric and tired, but now the focus is on world flavours along with an ele-

For Elliott Wright, 25 years a restaurateur, the new chefs he has taken on to transform Olivia’s in La Cala de Mijas have left him astounded.

vation of Spanish cuisine and eating concepts - the tapa, the ración, sharing options, and filling the table with world flavours. “There will be new sections on the menu. What I like to do, and what Elliott likes to do when we go out, is order some cold meats, other small plates and perhaps a fish dish, and just share.” We are also trying to offer things that you find elsewhere for lunch like our piadinas (a flat bread sandwich).

For Elliott, “The idea that a table of four orders, four starters and four mains is old hat now. We would rather come and order five or six small dishes to share, then maybe something from the grill, maybe a rice dish. I have trouble finding a really good paella on this coast.”

For David, it’s all about finding the right chefs and the right rigs to work on. “We’re building wood-fired rigs for rice dishes and paellas, burning locally sourced woods, like orange wood, or lemon wood, for that unique flavour, and a bread oven for contemporary twists on breads, like Moroccan spiced flatbreads, focaccias, and brioches. A kitchen designed for quality seafood and grilled meats. We are looking at a high-end brasserie style, informal and relaxed and carefully designed specific to what we are preparing.” The open kitchen concept features high on David’s list of demands, so customers can see how the kitchen artists knead their own bread and churn their own butter.

Elliott laughs as David’s list of demands for the new kitchen concept doesn’t come cheap. With extensive travels sourcing and buying in just the right equipment plus flying in chefs from around the globe, this is no minor makeover.

Ryan McCabe, new head chef of Olivia’s La Cala, joins the team hot off the heels of working with Gordon Ramsey in London, three-Michelin-star restaurant Frantzén in Stockholm, and two-Michelin-star Chapter One in Dublin, once rated the best restaurant in Ireland. He brings systems from the very best restaurants. “Wipe the slate clean; build a real kit-

chen and kitchen brigade,” he says.

While in Stockholm, he was introduced to new flavours and approaches to cooking that broadened the range of his artist’s palette. His influences come from as broad a field as Scandinavia and Korea.

Michael Pétursson, the new head chef at Olivia’s in Orihuela, Alicante, arrives with influences and ideas rarely experienced in Spain. He has Michelin stars in his blood, coming from a cheffing family and whose father used to be head chef at the celebrated Michelin-starred Óx in Reykjavik.

For Michael, it’s all about the radical change in direction. He tells us there has been a change in the demographic. There is a new customer these days with expectations higher than ever before. Elliott says, “In the short period of time that the new chefs have been in the kitchen, the food has moved up to a level it has never been before. I’ve never had food of this quality from any chef at Olivia’s in the 10 years we have been open.

“The concept is one he has wanted to create for some years but has just not had the right talent in the kitchen to bring it to reality.” Now, all the pieces have fallen into place. He tells us Olivia’s will always be the best party in town, but soon the focus on the food will be revolutionary. The finest in dining experiences will form the centre of Olivia’s concept, with more interaction between the diners and the chefs. And Elliott is not done there as he excitedly explains he believes he is going to build the best outdoor bar around with a new elevator to take customers to the rooftop terrace sky bar for sushi and signature cocktails and spectacular 180º views of the Mediterranean. For this we will have to wait until March!

Upon arriving in Spain, Dottie was enrolled at the prestigious Stagecoach Theatre Arts School where she flourished in her dancing, singing and acting classes and consequently earned roles as Sharpay in High School Musical and Scat Cat in Aristocrats.

Urged by her performing arts teachers, Dottie successfully auditioned for the star part and wowed the director and production team with her professionalism, unpretentiousness and dedication.

Asking Dottie what was her favourite part of playing the renowned orphan, she enthused that performing the song ‘Tomorrow’ was a huge responsibility that she

absolutely loved and that she also enjoyed working with the other cast and crew members, especially the actors that played the parts of Daddy Warbucks, Grace and the other children - “it felt like we were one big family.”

So, what does the future hold for Dottie?

As a stage actress, she aspires to play strong characters such as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz and Matilda from Matilda the Musical, but the dream is to go to Hollywood and star in films that inspire people.

Kempinski showcase

HELEN STANLEY, curator of the Kempinski Summer Market, introduces a new initiative on Saturday, October 26, aimed at encouraging young talent.

The summer garden market at the Kempinski hotel proved so popular that the luxury hotel decided it should continue through the autumn as well. And now, Helen has seen an opportunity to foster the future of talent on the Costa del Sol by inviting A-Level Art students to exhibit their creations at her Champagne Lifestyle Designer Showcase.

The first local school to be invited to the ‘art fair’ market will be EIC (English International College) in Elviria, who have selected one of their students, Victoria, to represent the school. The stall is com-

pletely free to the school and students with the idea of giving them the experience of the commercial side of their artisanal ventures, mixing with and learning from other professional artisans. This will be the first initiative of its kind on the Costa del Sol that benefits and promotes the work of artists this young.

The Kempinski Hotel, the schools, and Estepona Council are fully behind the initiative, and the mayor of Estepona is said to be planning a visit to open the garden market for the first youth contribution.

The Kempinski Hotel Garden Art Market curated by Helen Stanley is open in the grounds of the Kempinski Hotel in Estepona on Saturday, October 26.

Stupendous start to the Poppy Appeal

LA CALA DE MIJAS witnessed an amazing first time event, organised by The Royal British Legion, as a marching band, military veterans (many resplendent in uniform and medals), scouts and volunteers, numbering over 100 in total, paraded through La Cala to reinforce the importance of this worthy cause.

Starting at Butibamba park, the circular route took in much of La Cala, including a stop for a blessing ceremony at the tower.

The brainchild of Andy Nye of The Royal British Legion and its president of the Mijas branch, Margery Taylor, who was recently awarded an MBE for her services to charity, the event generated huge crowds along the route.

These crowds, old and young, just demonstrated the unwavering support for this worthy cause.

The afternoon concluded with a BBQ and live music in Calahonda, eventually bringing to a close a very successful day.

To support the appeal and help the ongoing work of the Royal British Legion, poppies and donation boxes are now available at many shops, bars and restaurants along the coast.

And more so, if you would like to get involved, more details can be found at branches.britishlegion. org.uk/branches/mijas-costa.

COSTA FOOD TOURS

Food & Wine Matching –A Black Art or a Pleasure?

MANY times people dining out reach the conclusion that either the food was great and the wine wasn’t, or vice-versa! On further investigation it’s often the case that both were pretty ok, just somewhat mismatched.

We are woefully uneducated when it comes to enjoying food and wine as a whole, rather than individual component parts of the experience. Virtually nowhere in the world makes wine to drink on its own, it’s very much part of the winemaking culture (with a significant hand from Mother Nature), that wine styles compliment local cuisines. When it’s done well, the whole should be greater than the sum of the parts, but when done badly it degrades the food, the wine, our palates and the whole experience.

But, in reality, this is not the black art so protected by sommeliers. Just following a few simple rules will make one of the essential pleasures of human life even better, and your dinner parties will never be the same again!

Try matching the weight and the richness of the

food with that of the wine. Strong flavours in food will kill a lightweight wine, making it seem insipid and watery, so opt for something with body and character. For example roast chicken will overpower an albarino or a sauvignon blanc, instead think about an oaked chardonnay that offers body and strength of flavour, or more appropriately a rich verdejo from Rueda.

And it’s not always white wine with fish! Light wines are great with plain grilled

white fish or seafood but when dealing with meaty players like monkfish or turbot, consider a softer red with fewer tannins, such as a young Beaujolais, a New Zealand pinot noir or a super fresh garnacha from Navarra (readily available in most stores).

When thinking about red wines, tannins are hugely important because they react with protein so require protein rich foods, such as steak or hard cheeses.

Tannins are particularly prevalent in tempranillo, especially from it’s hot heartland of Rioja and Ribero del Duero. But these wines are not a good idea with highly spiced foods, which require something softer with a bit more sweetness.

Art breakfast socials

FORGET boring art lessons - this is a freestyle painting bash like no other. Let your imagination run wild, whether you’re a newbie or a modern-day Picasso. No stuffy instructors, no formal lesson. Just you, some paint, and all the sunshine you can soak up.

What’s On the Ticket?

Date: Saturday, October 26 · 10am. For a tidy €27 per person, you’ll get everything you need to create your very own masterpiece and enjoy a Mediterranean-style breakfast.

Here’s the lowdown:

• All the art supplies you’ll need to become the next Banksy: easel, 30 x 23 cm canvas, pencil, eraser, plus a rainbow of traditional and metallic acrylic paints! Add your signature touch with tapes, glitter, gems, stickers, and more.

• Start off right with two drinks

of your choice - fancy a coffee, tea, or a refreshing orange juice? And of course, jugs of mineral and flavoured water on the side.

• Build your own butty! Take your pick from a spread of jamón, turkey, cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes for a sarnie that’s as creative as your painting.

• Croissants with butter and jam - a classic combo that’ll have you saying “magnifique” as you pain away.

Hallway of horror

That’s a few simple rules for starters but should give you a little guidance to make your food and wine experience just a little more pleasurable. Happy dining!

ESTEPONA will be opening up the Pasaje del Terror (Hallway of Horror) this Halloween with a chance for everyone to shine in a terrifying fancy dress competition.

The Costa del Sol town will be celebrating the most blood-curdling celebration of the year aimed at all ages alive and undead on Thursday, October 31 at the Recinto Ferial. The fairground will transform its appearance into something quite monstrous with pumpkins, skeletons, and mummies. Once inside, the most intrepid will find the Pasaje de Terror full of ghouls and spectors and pretty good prizes for the most frightful.

There will be several categories and prizes for this year’s contest, with the

awards ceremony being at 9pm. Specifically, the best group in character will be awarded with €500, the most numerous group of spooks with €500, the most sinister family with €200, the most terrifying character with €100, and the best pair of characters €100.

The programmed activities will take place from 7pm to the witching hour at 12am and include a dance performance by the students of the Martina Tessaro Academy at 8pm and taking to the stage at 9.30pm, the devilishly good Los Calvin.

There will be a full bar with food all evening to keep the zombies full of energy to dance all night. So, there’s no time to wait; Estepona spooks and ghouls. Dust the cobwebs off those old vampire costumes and werewolf furs. There are cash prizes for the taking.

Wing it big Vintage vogue

VICTORIAN beauty routines often involved unusual and sometimes dangerous practices that would be considered strange by today’s standards. Women sought pale skin as a symbol of refinement, and they sometimes used toxic lead-based powders or arsenic wafers to lighten their complexions. This desire for a fair, blemish-free appearance reflects today’s focus on clear, even-toned skin, though modern products are much safer and regulated.

Victorian women also used crushed insects like cochineal for lip and cheek stains, a precursor to the natural and organic beauty trends we see today. Home-made remedies, such as rose water for a natural fragrance or vinegar rinses for hair shine, were common, showing a preference for natural ingredients that parallels the growing popularity of clean beauty in our time.

Victorian women even employed bizarre methods like using raw meat masks to rejuvenate the skin, seeking youthful appearances much like today’s anti-ageing treatments. Although the methods have changed, the underlying desire for a youthful, flawless look remains. The Victorian era’s mix of innovation and risk-taking in beauty continues to influence modern skincare and cosmetic ideals.

THIS autumn, the make-up world is embracing the bold and edgy trend of rockstar eyeliner, a style that brings a rebellious flair to any look. Characterised by dramatic lines and sharp wings, rockstar eyeliner allows for creative expression and a touch of glamour reminiscent of iconic musicians. This trend can be adapted for both daytime and evening wear, making it versatile enough for various occasions. To achieve the rockstar eyeliner look, start with a high-quality liquid or gel liner for precision. Focus on creating a thick line along the upper lash line, ex-

tending it into a dramatic wing. Don’t shy away from experimenting with colour- metallics and vibrant hues are particularly trendy this season. For an added twist, consider layering different eyeliner styles, like graphic lines or a smudged effect, to enhance the rebellious vibe. Pair the bold eyeliner with minimal make-up on the rest of the face to let your eyes take centre stage. This trend not only captures attention but also embodies a sense of confidence and individuality.

THE shelf life of cosmetics and beauty products is an important factor to consider for both effectiveness and safety. Over time, these products can lose their potency or harbour bacteria, which can lead to skin irritation or infections. Typically, cosmetics like foundation and skincare creams last

Time to toss

between six to 24 months, while powder-based products like blush or eyeshadow can last up to two years. Mascara and liquid eyeliner, however, should be replaced every three to six months due to a higher risk of bacterial growth.

To determine the expiration date of a product, look for the Period After Opening (PAO) symbol on the packaging. This is usually represented by a small jar icon with a number followed by the letter ‘M’, such as ‘12M’, indicating the product should be used within 12 months after opening. Additionally, some products may have a specific expiration date stamped on the packaging.

Keeping your products in a cool, dry place and tightly sealed can help extend their shelf life, ensuring you get the most out of your beauty routine while keeping your skin safe.

Dementia and loneliness

LONELINESS in middle and old age increases the risk of dementia by 31 per cent, according to a major new analysis of around 609,000 participants worldwide.

Researchers have said that this is the biggest study to date regarding a link between cognitive decline and the impact loneliness and depression can have on the brain.

Dementia affects 7.9 million people throughout the European Union (EU). Loneliness was found to raise the risk of general dementia, vascular dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease and contribute to overall cognitive impairment, in which memory, decision-making, and concentration decline in later life.

Researchers in Ireland, Switzerland, France, the United States, and Chi-

na conducted the study. Participants were asked how often they felt lonely and assessed the intensity.

Páraic Ó Súilleabháin, one of the study’s authors said in a statement“loneliness is a critically important risk factor in the future development of dementia,” Martina Luchetti, the study’s lead author and an assistant professor at Florida State University in the US, said “There are different types and sources of loneliness that can affect cognitive symptoms across the dementia continuum.”

Thirty-five per cent of people across the EU say they are lonely at least some of the time and the highest rates of loneliness were found to be in Ireland, Luxemburg, Bulgaria, and Greece.

An egg debate

EGGS have long been surrounded by myths, often leading to confusion about their place in a healthy diet. One common misconception is that eggs raise cholesterol levels. While eggs do contain cholesterol, research shows that dietary cholesterol has a limited impact on blood cholesterol for most people. In fact, eggs are a rich source of protein, vitamins, and healthy fats, making them a nutritious choice.

Another myth suggests that eating eggs daily is unhealthy. However, most health experts agree that consuming one egg a day is safe for most individuals, especially when balanced with other nutrient-rich foods. The key is moderation and paying attention to overall dietary habits.

There is also a belief that brown eggs are healthier than white eggs. In reality, the colour of an egg is determined by the hen’s breed and has no impact on nutritional value. When choosing eggs, it’s more important to consider factors like organic or free-range options rather than colour. Eggs can be part of a balanced diet when consumed thoughtfully.

Root of the problem

HIDING regrowth roots between visits to the hairdresser can keep your hair looking fresh and maintained. There are several quick and effective methods to help blend in those roots until your next appointment.

One popular option is using root touchup sprays or powders, available in a variety of shades. These products are easy to apply and provide temporary coverage that washes out with shampoo. Simply spray or dust the product onto your roots to conceal any colour differences.

Another trick is to change your hairstyle. Opt for a zigzag parting instead of a straight one, as this can make the roots less noticeable. Loose waves or messy buns also create texture

THE focus of skincare and beauty has shifted significantly in recent years, moving away from the pursuit of “anti-ageing” and toward the concept of “ageing well.” While anti-ageing products once dominated the market with promises of wrinkle reduction and youthful skin, the emphasis now is on embracing the ageing process while maintaining health and vitality. This new approach is less about reversing signs of ageing and more about supporting the skin’s natural needs as it matures.

Ageing well

Ageing well means prioritising hydration, sun protection, and nourishment to keep skin healthy and radiant, rather than attempting to erase every line and wrinkle. It’s about celebrating the life experiences that come with age, and using skincare to maintain a glow that reflects a well-lived life. This shift encourages people to adopt

Beef tallow skincare trend

BEEF tallow skincare, derived from cow fat, is gaining popularity on TikTok and was even featured in Netflix’s The Perfect Couple. This natural product contains essential fatty acids and vitamins A, D, E and K, which help repair the skin barrier, deeply moisturise and boost collagen production, making it ideal for sensitive or dry skin.

Tallow’s reported benefits include anti-ageing properties and nutrient-rich nourishment. It’s actually been used for centuries, from ancient Egypt to medieval Europe, for its protective and healing properties. With the rise

of natural skincare, tallow is making a comeback.

Recent studies show tallow’s compatibility with the skin’s lipid composition, making it a promising ingredient, though more research is needed on long-term human use.

Unlike popular vegan beauty products, tallow is animal-based, which some claim provides richer nourishment. However, its animal origin raises ethical concerns for those committed to cruelty-free beauty. Tallow skincare is available online or can be made at home offering a unique option in the beauty world.

self-care routines that include quality sleep, a balanced diet, and stress ma nagement, alongside their skincare.

The change in perspective has fos tered a more positive approach to ageing, promoting self-ac ceptance and a focus on holistic wellness over the pursuit of eternal youth.

Healthily slim or dangerously thin?

“I WANNA be able to eat spaghetti bolognese, and not feel bad about it for days and days and days,” sang Lily Allen. Therefore, it´s no surprise that her dramatic weight loss has sparked concern that the 39-year-old singer and song writer has been taking weight loss drug, Ozempic. In an exclusive interview with the Financial Times last year, Lily was quoted as saying that she “got thin before Ozempic” but gave a hazy response when questioned about an eating disorder. But does

Lily see what we see?

Body dysmorphia disorder (BDD) is less well known than anorexia nerviosa and bulimia, but is a mental health disorder closely connected to both. Sufferers of BDD perceive themselves as flawed physically to a disproportionate level, when to those around them, the flaw doesn’t even exist.

Sharon Osborne has always been refreshingly open about her life, and admitted using Ozempic, confessing that the effects were more extreme than

she had anticipated. The 71-year-old confessed the drug may have done significant damage to her metabolic system as she now finds it an impossible task to put any weight back on.

Personal trainer Imogen [@imos_fitness], based in Weymouth, UK, is concerned about the effects that social media and celebrities have on the mental and physical health of young women. She says 90 per cent of her clients initially come to her for help combating struggles with their body.

Dr César Ramírez joins the American College of Surgeons (ACS)

DR CÉSAR RAMÍREZ PLA -

ZA, Head of the General and Digestive Surgery Department at Quirónsalud Malaga Hospital and one of the most renowned professionals in his field in Spain, has become a new member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). This induction and recognition took place this past Saturday during the admission and affiliation ceremony at the organisation’s Annual Congress held in San Francisco.

Founded in 1913 to improve the quality of patient care by setting high standards for surgical education and practice, this scientific and educational association currently has almost 90,000 members worldwide, making it the largest and most prestigious surgical society in the world.

To be admitted and accepted as a member of the ACS, Dr Ramírez had to demonstrate a high level of personal and professional

competence. The requirements for admission include proving a strong command of the English language, having an established and recognised professional career, and passing an interview where a set of educational and ethical values based on the ACS’s style guide and philosophy are assessed. After meeting these criteria, candidates may then be considered for membership in this influential surgical society.

In recent years, Dr Ramírez has become one of the most prominent national figures in abdominal oncological surgery and endocrine surgery. He highlighted the selective nature and value of joining this association: “Only those colleagues who seek professional excellence, both as surgeons and as part of the global surgical community, are accepted. It’s a path that only dedication and daily excellence can allow you to complete.”

omen, thought to predict death or danger. On the other hand, some believe that if a dog walks between you and your partner, it could cause conflict in your relationship. Birds also carry their own lore; a bird flying into a home is sometimes believed to signify an impending death.

These superstitions reflect cultural beliefs and historical contexts, showing how humans have long assigned mystical meanings to animals and their behaviour.

Superstitious tales

THE superstition about a black cat crossing your path has long been associated with luck, and the direction it crosses can supposedly change its meaning. In many Western cultures, a black cat crossing from left to right is thought to bring bad luck, while a right-to-left crossing might bring good fortune. This belief stems from medieval times, when black cats were linked to witches and misfortune.

Superstitions extend beyond black cats. For example, in some cultures, a dog howling at night is seen as a bad

Costa Blanca North Wall of Solidarity

IT is true what they say ‘cancer does not discriminate’ and you only have to look at some of the celebrities who have had to face this sad reality to know just how true this is. It doesn’t matter how famous you are, how much money you have, or even how old you are.

That’s why it was so heartwarming to see 1,000 pupils at Lopa de Vega International School demonstrate their commitment to raising awareness during breast cancer awareness month. Moreover, they chose the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) ‘Fight Against Breast Cancer Day’ on October 18 to make their message even more poignant.

Combining hundreds of pink scarves, they created a visual reminder in the form of a wall of solidarity. The children then decorated each scarf, conveying messages of strength, encouragement, and hope to all the brave women fighting this disease.

Costa Blanca South Alicante tourism explodes

THE Valencian Community is set to experience a tourism boom, according to a recent report from Braintrust’s Tourism Barometer.

The consulting firm predicts record levels of international visitors and spending across Spain in 2024, with over 91m tourists expected and spending projected to reach €125 billion. By 2040, Spain could attract 115 mn foreign visitors, potentially surpassing France as the world’s leading tourist destination. Tourism’s contribution to Spain’s GDP is projected to exceed 15 per cent, with key regions like the Valencian Community, particularly hotspots like Alicante and the Costa Blanca, playing a pivotal role in this growth. Looking ahead, mature destinations like Alicante aim to shift their focus toward higher-quality tourism, promoting sustainable growth and enhancing the overall visitor experience.

The report also states fewer tourists are arriving from traditional European markets such as the UK, Germany, and France but instead Asia and America.

Accidents happen

BUMPS with other vehicles account for over 70 per cent of all road accidents in Spain. Taking the right steps after a minor scrape could leave you seriously out of pocket.

Regardless of alertness or experience, accidents happen. In Spain, it is important to remember the road and kilometre numbers you are at, as indicated by signs along motorways.

Following any collision, ensure everyone is safe and compos mentis, as even a slight knock can cause whiplash or concussion.

If possible, move your vehicle to the side of the road, turn on hazard lights, and put on the reflective vest before exiting the vehicle. Signal the perimeter of the accident by placing reflective triangles or the flashing magnetic light on top of your vehicle. Take notes on the vehicles involved, including

make, mo del, colour, and number plate, and photos of the damage done. Keep a ‘friendly accident agreement’ form in your glove compartment and exchange details with the other driver. If the other driver refuses or drives off, call 112 to request the police or it may result in costly repairs. The officers will be impartial and always seek to resolve

the conflict. Contact your insurer. Wherever the accident took place, the insurance people will no doubt ask at which kilometre of the road you are on. Moving your car away and dealing with the insurance later may affect your insurance claim, and send them a copy of the car accident report as soon as possible.

Follow the right procedures in an accident.

ANDALUCIA WALKING FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Let’s get going again!

A.W.F.L. Over 60s

Sporting Benahavis 1 v 4 AC Benahavis

After the recent lull in League and Cup action, it was good to get back to business with this derby match, in which Sporting were hoping to show that they are closing the gap on their loftier club rivals! And so it proved, at least during the early exchanges, as Sporting managed to fire in four quick shots on goal in the opening encounters, including one which hit the bar! This spurred AC into action and they soon took the lead through a well-taken Dave O’Hara goal, soon nearly doubled when ‘Popeye’ Madden hit the post! Sporting, however, continued to match their opponents and equalised through a Michael Verby penalty, awarded for running offences.

AC then raised their game and began to take control and it was no surprise when they retook the lead through a Mark Morris goal, scored following a free kick on the edge of the penalty area. To conclude the first half, Mark Cooper scored a screamer after previously hitting the post to make AC 3-1 leaders at the break. More of the same followed and, al-

Sinner’s prize triumph

JANNIK SINNER, the world’s number one tennis player, made headlines after winning the Six Kings Slam in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and securing a historic €5.5 million payout- the largest prize in tennis history.

Sinner triumphed over Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in a thrilling three-set match, winning 6-7, 6-3, 6-3. This victory adds to his already impressive 2024 season, which saw him win both the Australian Open and

though Sporting fought gamely to try to get back into the match, it was largely thanks to their keeper, Tony Peters, that the scoreline did not get much higher. Rob Fitzgerald made sure of all three points for AC by scoring the final goal from distance. New balls, please!

The Walking Football community in general is always trying to heighten its profile by introducing new concepts, ideas and features. One such was piloted in the recent tournaments reported on in the EWN’s previous edition last week, that of a new football, specifically designed to meet the needs of Walking Football, which differ in some ways from the

running game.

The new ball, weighing in at a mere 290 grams, is manufactured by Molten, who supply the balls for the Europa League. The science behind the ball is remarkable and the end result is a ball which plays and responds like a normal football but is much lighter. This helps to prevent more serious injuries to goalkeepers and outfield players alike.... and being hit in the face by one is much less painful than by its heavier counterpart.

All teams who participated in the tournaments voted it a success! No doubt we will be seeing more of it in the near future.

See you next week!

the US Open, cementing his dominance in the sport.

The Six Kings Slam is part of Saudi Arabia’s growing investment in sports, highlighting its ambition to host high-profile events. This exhibition match, with its record-breaking prize, reflects the lucrative financial incentives offered in the Middle East, often surpassing traditional tournament winnings. For exam-

ple, the winner’s prize for the 2024 US Open was only €2.6 million, less than half of what Sinner earned in Riyadh.

Emma Raducanu’s limiting injury

EMMA RADUCANU has been forced to withdraw from the 2024 Hong Kong Open due to a persistent foot injury, marking another setback in her challenging year.

The British tennis star had initially expressed excitement about competing in the event, but a recurring ligament injury, sustained during a match against Daria Kasatkina, has halted her return. This injury had already ruled her out of the Korea Open in September, leaving fans disappointed.

Raducanu, ranked 55th in the world, has struggled to maintain form following multiple surgeries on her wrists and foot. After missing much of the 2023 season, she had hoped to rebuild momentum in 2024 but has faced continuous injury issues.

American Sofi a Kenin, who defeated Raducanu in the 2024 US Open, will replace her at the Hong Kong Open, which begins on Monday October 28. Kenin, a former Grand Slam champion, joins a competitive fi eld despite other withdrawals, including Naomi Osaka, who also pulled out due to injury.

Raducanu is expected to participate in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals next month, but her latest setback raises concerns about her fi tness for the competition. Fans will be watching closely, hoping for a stronger 2025 for the young star.

McGregor’s betting blunder

IRISH boxer Conor McGregor lost a high-stakes bet after backing Brazilian Renan Ferreira in a fight against Cameroonian powerhouse Francis Ngannou, but confidently declared he’ll win the money back soon.

Despite Sinner’s incredible victory, Saudi Arabia’s involvement in sports has faced criticism due to its human rights record, particularly concerning LGBTQ+ and women’s rights. Tennis legends like Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert have raised concerns about the kingdom’s increasing role in the sport. Nevertheless, for Sinner, this win not only boosts his profile but also further solidifies his status as the top player in the world, setting him up for even more success in the future.

Irish boxer, Conor MgGregor, has had to bite his tongue after a recent bet went pear-shaped and ended up losing him $500,000. Now he is determined to win the money back on other bets and insists he will be successful. Prior to the failing bet, McGregor had got lucky when a bet on Alex Pereira at UFC 307 had landed him $1.2million. With this success under his belt, the confident Irishman decided to test his luck with Renan Ferreira who he chose to fight against Francis Ngannou in his PFL opening game, hoping for a win-

ning kitty of $1.7million. This impulsive move came as he was watching the game. He is reported to have tweeted out a voice note: “Tonight’s bet for me. 500k on Ferreira to win by KO at 12/5. $1.7m return.” He then added: “Okay, folks, ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor here. Fight night, fight night, fight night. The Mac is back with his winning bets.”

However, Cameroonian boxer Ngannou slashed McGregor’s hopes when he won the fight with a first round knockout and won the PFL Super Fights title. Social media fans have expressed horror at the winning attack, criticising the referee, Dan Miragliotta for allowing such a prolonged series of punches against the Brazilian, Ferreira before intervening.
