Bigger than ever Costa del Sol goes all-in at FITUR
‘SURRENDER to the Andalucian Crush’. That’s the name of the promotional campaign the Costa del Sol has joined at FITUR, the world’s biggest tourism fair currently on in Madrid.
After the region celebrated its biggest and most profitable year in history, with record employment, record numbers in tourists visiting, and more nationalities arriving at Malaga airport than ever before, the Costa del Sol is going all-in this year aiming for even more quality tourists and higher income.
Campaigners from all the Costa del Sol communities and councils are present at FITUR this year with the objective of wooing even more nationalities than they have traditionally done before, and nationalities from even further afield than before.
The message each of the groups are spreading is the same: ‘Q’ for quality, as they seek to present Andalucia not only as a tourist destination, but as a space of art, passion, history and beauty.
Famous faces are at the

forefront of the Costa del Sol campaign, such as Eva Longoria and Antonio Banderas, and this year not only the beaches, as the campaign is putting a great deal more emphasis on inland treasures including castles, pueblos blancos, spectacular views, and historic sites.
The Minister of Tourism and Andalucian Foreign Affairs, Arturo Bernal, highlighted the important role of the Costa del Sol in the region. “The excellent data collected from 2024 has contributed to Anda-

lucia having lived the best tourist year in its history,” he stated.
For the inauguration of the massive event, the Symphony Orchestra of the Soho CaixaBank Theatre of Malaga, promoted by Antonio Banderas, opened the
ceremony, including in its emotive repertoire of original soundtracks from the most emblematic films shot in each of the provinces of Andalucia and the majestic scores of Gladiator; Pirates of the Caribbean, Interstellar, and The Lion King.

Adam Woodward TORREMOLINOS has just opened its panoramic elevator in La Batería Park, a new infrastructure that represents a qualitative leap in terms of accessibility for the town and that allows Avenida Carlota Alessandri to connect with one of the biggest green areas in town.
Mayor of Torremolinos, Margarita del Cid, has visited the new facility, which involved an investment of almost €900,000. “The commissioning of this elevator is a milestone that represents a before and after in terms of accessibility in our town. Because thanks to this panoramic elevator we have managed to connect and make foot traffic between this part of town and the coast much more viable,” Del Cid explained.

FUENGIROLA Council workers have finally finished renovation works on the Las Presas de Torreblanca Park, a remodelling that has cost an investment of over €350,000 and that has meant the planting of new species and the rehabilitation of the pathway.

people. The project has been equipped with an approved electric rescue system and an evacuation hatch on the cabin roof.
The elevator will be operated by people hired through the Special Employment Centre, in Los Pinares, giving this added feature a greater social dimension.
MALAGA Council has announced it will get rid of the horse-drawn carriages for tourists, a measure that seeks to support animal welfare and the controversy that surrounds them. However, opinions among the population are very much divided on the issue.
The decision is in response to many years of public petitions and claims by animal rights groups that say that the animals suffer, especially in the hottest months, from pulling carriages full of tourists, causing them to suffer exhaustion and dehydration.
For Mayor Paco de la Torre, it’s all about promoting the city as a modern destina-
tion that respects animal welfare. The council will reimburse the coachmen who run the horse-drawn carriage service for the 11 years that remain on their licences. The coachmen, who will effectively be out of the job, are insisting the council do something to find them new jobs and compensate them for their investments made in equipment and stables over the years. Other cities in Andalucia are considering doing away with the tradition, especially in Sevilla and Ronda. In Malaga, they are preparing to bid farewell to one of the city’s most emblematic and traditional sights and hoping a fair settlement can be reached with the coachmen.

ber and has involved the revitalisation of this green public space, as well as the rehabilitation of the walkway that connects the area of the town to the beach.
Mayor Mula pointed out that “the drawn-out process has been long,

but we can finally enjoy this green space, one of the most beautiful corners of Fuengirola,” expressing enormous satisfaction with the result of the 1.8-kilometre trail project.
The budget for the works has amounted to €350,813.57, almost exactly the amount left over from the council’s
2023 budget, and carried out by the construction company Hormacesa.
“It was a project that local people had been calling for over many years, particularly the residents of Torreblanca, and it has worked out to be a definite enhancement of this green zone,” said the mayor.

Tax hike just hot air
Sánchez’s property tax shocker clarified
SPANISH Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez shook the world on Monday, January 13, with the obscure claim that his government planned to tax properties owned by non-EU nationals by 100 per cent.
The soundbite rang alarm bells and made headlines around the world, not least for the ambiguity in its language. Could this be existing properties? Could this be property owned by offshore and non-resident investors? Could this be on the purchase tax of properties? While interpretations of the boastful claim by Sánchez were various, the miscommunication caused hearts to skip throughout the entire expat community in Spain.
But such an extraordinary claim by Sánchez could not be true and almost certainly is not, we can gladly announ ce.
New information has since come to light that provides clearer guidance on the intended direction of this mea sure. It appears that the proposal does not refer to a tax equating to 100 per cent of the property value, but rather to a 100 perc ent increase in the applicable tax on property acquisition for non-EU, non-resident buyers. This adjustment significantly alters the interpretation and reduces the perceived extremity of the policy.

red by the government.
The political reality in the likelihood of the minority governing party ever being able to pass such an extreme measure of levying a 100 per cent tax on foreign-owned property is so improbable given the current political climate when opposition parties have already voiced their hostility to the proposed rule change that even if it were policy, it would never realistically come to fruition.
Added to this, there would be the procedural hurdles any such measure would face. The legislative process requires thorough draughting, consultation, and parliamentary approval, which, in this case, seems increasingly challenging given the lack of support the party of Pedro Sánchez leads.
Despite the headlines provoked in the world’s press, the enormity of upset caused in the property market, and the mass speculation the Prime Minister’s words fuelled, at no point has anyone from the PSOE-led administration stepped forward to clarify the words of their leader.
Certain documents obtained from the governing party now specify the proposal as a tax increase, not a confisca-
Spain’s Bizum
HACIENDA has set its sights on Bizum this time. Spain’s tax authority has recently announced that they will be going after Bizum transfers over a certain amount.
It’s all fun and games until the taxman comes knocking...
Bizum has become the go-to payment method in
tory measure. For instance, Point 10 of the housing plan refers to ‘a 100 per cent’ increase in the applicable tax rather than the entire value of the property. Nonetheless, and despite international press headlines being awash with hypothesising, no clarification has been publicly offe-
crackdown
Spain in recent years. From paying for a shared booking or chipping in for a gift to paying your friends back for cab rides. With a whopping 27 million users in Spain, according to the latest report from Funcas, it’s safe to say Bizum has a major grip on the nation’s transactions. But hold on - before you think that this speedy
transfer service is tax-free, think again.
If you receive more than €10,000 through Bizum in a year, you must include it in your annual tax return. And don’t think you’re off the hook if you’re under that threshold - any income received through Bizum, no matter how small, must be declared if it’s taxable. Yes, you read that right, even the small stuff counts.

Failure to report Bizum payments can land you in hot water, with fines ranging from €600 to a staggering 50 per cent of the undeclared amount - depending on how seriously they view the infraction. And let’s be clear: Hacienda is serious when it comes to what they consider ‘their’ money.
Interpretation of the statement caused speculative interpretation, and naturally so given the ambiguities of what was said. However, even with the potential of that tax increase going ahead, political reality suggests it would be highly unlikely to ever pass Congress.

New rules UK travel
THE UK has just launched its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) programme for those travelling who do not hold a UK passport as part of their plans to fully digitalise border crossings.
The permit is required for travellers from countries such as the US, Canada and Australia from January 2025, while Europeans will need to apply for the new ETA from April 2 this year, and can start applying from March 5. Applications include children and babies too.
Most will be able to apply via the ETA mobile app or the UK government website, and can expect a decision within three days. Once received, the ETA can be shown on a mobile device as valid ID when entering the UK. It is not a travel visa for those from countries that requi-
re one, nor does it replace a visa.
Given the application takes approximately three days before it is approved, the ETA should be applied for in advance of travelling. Currently, though, it is possible to go to the UK while the application process is underway.
There is a small cost entailed of approximately £10 (€12). The ETA is valid for two years and allows visitors to the UK to stay for up to six months or for the duration of their visa limit. In that period, if you get a new or renewed passport, you will need to get a new ETA too.
Those transiting and not leaving a UK airport do not need an ETA.

Celebrating 40 years

MIJAS Council has had a department for foreigners for advising those from other countries for the last 40 years.
It was the first of its kind in Spain and set itself up as a benchmark for those seeking help and advice in their newly adopted country. In just the last year, the service attended to 28,230 queries of all types.
This kind of consultancy has increased year on year, and in 2024, 9,580 people were attended to face to face, while another 7,310 telephone calls were attended to, and 11,340 queries by email were resolved.
Doubts over tax were the most frequently queried; registrations and their cancellations, those related to the foreigner’s identity number or the TIE card, permits and visas, the digital certificate, translations, services for women, urban planning, social
services, or the health service were also day-to-day enquiries.
The department also organises a variety of events throughout the year as well. Informative talks, initiatives in collaboration with clubs and associations, the development of an international trade fair, collaborative activities and meetings with consulates, language exchange workshops, and plenty of others.
According to the councillor for Foreigners, Mario Bravo, “Taking into account that a third of the population residing in Mijas is of foreign origin, this municipal department does an essential task of informing and resolving queries. We will continue working so that the foreign population continues to be served quickly and effectively.”

Boardmans in Africa
THE African adventures of the Boardmans continued deep into the Ugandan countryside.
Alan and Jenny Boardman, tireless campaigners for charity from Mijas, had spent the last four months campaigning for donations of eyeglasses and school material to take to Uganda and give to those without.
After a couple of hiccups at the beginning of their odyssey, they finally got their ride with the thousands of donated items and headed off towards one of the poorest areas of the country in the southwest of the Uganda.
They had planned to reserve the donations until they had reached their destination, but some they came across on the way needed their support too. One such case was a single-pa-

rent family to whom they just had to deliver some school supplies and things.
Alan said, “We then drove in turn to two mountain communities to start the process of giving your donations of spectacles. The welcome we received was heartfelt, including a banner expressing their gratitude for our efforts.”
Alan recalls that in Uganda, in the moun-
tains of the southwest, these communities receive a specialist visit on average only once every two years. “Imagine that!”, Alan says. Using the services of an interpreter, Alan and Jenny explained to the audience how the good people of the Costa del Sol had responded so generously to their Eyedrop campaign, and this was met with a hearty round of applause.

New music & dance
MARBELLA is going to have a spectacular new music and dance school in the next couple of years.
An impressive €7 million will be pumped into the project with the aim of constructing a cultural nest capable of attracting and launching onto the world stage the hottest future talent.

The initially set schedule is 20 months from start to finish and has been designed by internationally celebrated architects, Huete Arquitectos studio, who completed their side of the project a few years ago. They are the same architects who designed the now Marbella football stadium.
According to the architectural proposal, on the facade

or building, the MIDI representation of a song has been incorporated that in turn will allow lighting in the interior spaces. Far from the two-dimensional flatness, a three-dimensional form has been chosen in the form of an ascending music sheet.
The structure has a rooftop terrace space with an
elliptical walkway that slopes upwards, an exterior auditorium, a welcoming public space acting as a meeting point for everyone, a large main lobby, a central courtyard, a music wing, a dance wing, and plenty of parking. The overall look of the design plays with an open, indoors/outdoors theme.

Canine cardio Wheelchair curling
BENALMADENA is launching its own wheelchair curling team at the Palacio de Deportes ice rink, the first team of its kind in the region, and they are looking for those they can convert into talented sportspeople.
In order to make the Benalmadena Curling Club a reality, the NGO Paraocio has started an information campaign to select players to make up the first mixed wheelchair curling team in Andalucia for the 2024/25 season. This selection process will have its key moment on February 23 at Benalmadena’s ice rink.
Currently, Benalmadena Council is asking wheelchair users interested in becoming curling competitors to
sign up at the ice rink to create this unique team in the area and therefore to become ambassadors of inclusiveness in the region.
Curling is a sport of strategy and precision and has been included as a winter Olympic sport since 2006. It can be played by many confined to a wheelchair. The project also counts on training from able-bodied athletes from the conventional curling team, ‘Los Compadres de Malaga’.
The deadline for all those interested in participating is on February 23, and those wanting to sign up can do so at the Palacio de Deportes ice rink. For more information, call 643 180 321 or WhatsApp 641 248 117

Adam Woodward PERSEVERA BOX Estepona, a group dedicated to keeping fit through cross-training, paid a visit at the weekend, a short drive down the road to Los Barrios, near Gibraltar, to merge their fitness regime with dog walking.
Around 40 members of the fitness club participated in the dog walking from the dog rescue centre in Los Barrios, Fundación SOS Canya. Along their route they collected donations from people, and even from some neighbours who came out specifically to hand over cash for the dog rescue.
But the project was not only about collecting donations. It was also a genius idea to encourage locals to do the same and start a healthy daily exercise regime that involves volunteering to take the dogs with them for a walk instead of leaving them all locked up in the shelter.
According to the organi-

sers, a lot of people in the area go hiking at weekends, and if they can take a dog with them, not only will the dogs become much happier, they’ll become much healthier as well.
Given the large number
of fitness clubs and gyms, as well as the number of rescue dog shelters in the region, the organisers are hoping that the initiative will become infectious and spread along the Costa del Sol.

ESTEPONA Council is to start construction on a new river walkway and cycle path that will run along the banks of the Guadalmina River. This trail, with a length of 2.5 kilometres, will be a shining new addition for leisure and sport,
especially because it will be constructed with both walkers and cyclists in mind.
The new river path will allow people to enjoy a previously inaccessible space, with the addition of environmental regene-

ration of the river banks, the planting of elms, willows and poplars, which will contribute to improving the biodiversity of the area, and, as well, creating new green park areas.
The project will be constructed in two parts. The first phase will run from the main road to Benahavis, while the second phase will connect from the A7 to the Atalaya-Isdabe coastal corridor.
The development will contribute to improving links in the suburban area while integrating a new public space for leisure and sport. Street lighting and benches will be installed to ensure the comfort and safety of everyone.
Once the project has been tendered and done, the works of the first phase should be finished in five months. There are similar plans underway, such as one carried out in the Arroyo de Las Cañas, in the residential estate around Selwo.

MALAGA Council has revoked all permission to electric scooter rental companies, ending a relationship that has been strained since the arrival of these companies in the Costa del Sol in 2018.
The city council has been focusing on the irregular parking of these vehicles on pedestrian pavements and public spaces. The veto comes after seven companies operating personal mobility vehicles and electric bikes just left anywhere in the street were granted temporary authorisations in December 2022. These authorisations, which were granted for a trial period, were based on specific numbers of vehicles and could be revoked or modified at any time for public interest reasons without compensation.

Permit-holding companies will have a period of 10 working days to defend their interests, but there is no administrative appeal against the agreement. The decision aims to address the issue of improper parking on walkways and public spaces, ensuring that companies only use public roads for parking.

Willow in pieces
BENALMADENA harbour is to free up 19 moorings with the scrapping of the iconic ramshackle Mississippi steamboat, Willow.
After six years of sitting on the shallow sea floor in Benalmadena docks, the abandoned steamboat is to be demolished by Benalmadena Council. Years of legal wrangling between the owner of the vessel and the local authorities have concluded in the council’s favour.
The councillor for Ports, José Luis Bergillos, stressed the importance of this moment for the users, residents and visitors of the port, who have been waiting for this outcome after long disputes between the previous local government and the owner of the device.
The historic scrapping process of the well-known Willow, se -

mi-sunk in the waters of the Benalmadena Marina since March 2019, has officially begun. It is costing taxpayers over €300,000 and will take a month to clear away the remains of the boat.
By freeing up the space left by Willow, rent from the moorings should generate another €100,000 for the marina and eliminate a structure poten -
tially hazardous to the local marine ecosystem.
The scrapping also includes the correct waste management generated, complying with current environmental regulations. The remains of the Willow will be available to the awarded company, which will manage them outside the port in accordance with the applicable regulations.
Boar invasion

THE Miramar neighbourhood in Fuengirola, located next to the shopping centre of the same name, is facing a worrying issue with the proliferation of wild boars around their homes.
Residents have been seeing these animals at night for years, but have recently publicly complained about the increased numbers, and more and more in the plain light of day. The boars are now present every day without fail, according to locals, and often take over children’s playgrounds and dog parks, and they could cause a serious accident if one of them decides to cross the A-7.
Fuengirola Council has reminded the local population that they should not interact with these mammals or give them food. The residents demand immediate solutions to the problem,
such as placing food and water in the mountains so that these animals don’t come down in search of something to munch in the busy town.
Outside the urban area affected by the boar invasion, in May 2024, the Junta de Andalucia permitted that the area be declared a zone for emergency hunting given the danger and health risks involved with having such emboldened wild creatures entering nearby urban spaces. The resolution of May 31, 2024, of the General Directorate of Forestry Policy and Biodiversity, allows the live capture and the use of weapons for the slaughter of wild boars and feral pigs in the surrounds of Fuengirola and Mijas.
Complaints have been officially lodged with Fuengirola Council.

WELL-RESPECTED in Marbella for his expert advice on buying property, Mark FR Wilkins from London has just released his new book ‘Buying a Property in Marbella: Please Read this First’. Euro Weekly News met up for a chat with Mark about him, Marbella and the new book.

EWN: Who is Mark FR Wilkins?
Mark: I’m a non-practising English solicitor advising a Marbella based law firm. My colleague, bilingual abogados, provide advice and services to clients when they are interested in purchasing a property.
EWN: What brings you to Marbella?
Mark: Because it is truly the best place to live in Europe. I’ve been here for 22 years.
EWN: Why should people buy the book, Mark?
Mark: After years of working with international clients in the Marbella property market, I have created this insightful ebook as a comprehensive guide for those unfamiliar with both the local
real estate landscape and the region of Marbella.
I delve into the intricacies of the Marbella property market, exploring its locations and outlining the essential steps to take when navigating the purchasing process.
My goal is to equip buyers with the knowledge to avoid common pitfalls, minimise risks, and purchase with confidence.
EWN: What pitfalls do they fall into?
Mark: Placing too much emphasis on the relationship with the sales agent. They will be very personable, but rarely truly objective. Buyers need their lawyer, who can be absolutely focused on their best interests, impart good and bad news with equal honesty.
Self-employment boom

THE number of self-employed in the Costa del Sol grew by over 5,000 in 2024, reflecting the determination of the region to get business done.
The Malaga region stands out as one of the highest in the country for the number of new entrepreneurs in 2024. Over 10,000 new self-employed workers signed on to Social Security in the last year, with 19.3 per cent more than the previous year.
Among Costa del Sol towns, Fuengirola leads the charge with new enterpri-
sing business people. Of all new independent businesses, they account for 31.6 per cent more, followed by Mijas, with 31.2 per cent; Benalmadena, with 31.5 per cent; Alhaurín de la Torre, with 27.9 per cent; and Estepona, with 27.3 per cent.
More than half of the new business owners live in the same town as their place of work, and demographically, the over-50-year-olds group has been the most enterprising. One of the more interesting figures to come out in the Costa del Sol is that 11.3 per cent of all
self-employed people are foreigners. Over the last year, 2 per cent of all new self-employed were Spanish, while a whopping 13.7 per cent were from abroad. Women made up 46.6 per cent of all self-employed workers in Spain, a number that has been growing exponentially year on year.
According to Social Security figures in Andalucia, those signed on as working for themselves were 3,512,904, up 3.2 per cent on the previous year, meaning 156,313 more than in the same period in 2023.

JUANMA MORENO, president of the Junta de Andalucia, has detailed the commitment of the Andalucian government to create decent and affordable housing for families with fewer economic resources.
He has pledged to construct 20,000 official price-protected homes over the next five years, with an investment of more than €6.5 million. These flats, often referred to as VPOs in Spain, have their resale price officially capped by the government for a period of 20 years in order to deter property speculation. The delay in constructing this type of housing development in recent years is said to have been caused by a hold-up in the central government giving permission to requalify land designated for their construction.
Moreno pointed out that Andalucia has been the

More Finns to Fuengirola

FUENGIROLA mayor Ana Mula is in Helsinki singing the virtues of the Costa del Sol town at Matka 2025, Finland’s biggest tourism fair.
At the fair, officials from Fuengirola Council have participated in one of the biggest events on the schedule with ‘Fuengirola Day,’ which took centre stage, repromoting the already favourite destination for Finns.
“Fuengirola is, from the heart, your home. It is the
perfect town to spend a vacation, live, or develop a personal or business project. The best place in the world to live or stay for a season to have fun. We have everything necessary for all Finns who want to settle themselves among us with total ease,” said the mayor during an address to the travel agencies attending the exhibition.
Currently, almost 50 per cent of Finnish holidaymakers of those who travel to the Costa del Sol choose
Fuengirola. It is home to the largest colony of Finns in Western Europe, numbering over 5,000. There is something about the town that specifically attracts people from Finland.
According to data from Turismo Costa del Sol, Finland was, until September 2024, the fourth biggest international market sending tourists to Fuengirola, with more than 24,500 visitors, 45 per cent more than the same time in 2023.

David España with some of his artworks
WHAT do the homes of the King of Spain, Angelina Jolie, Spike Lee, and Elon Musk have in common? They are all adorned with the artwork of David España, resident artist of Casares Pueblo.
David’s gallery, carved out of a little cave in the centre of the village, is a must-visit on any trip to what was recently voted the most beautiful village in Andalucia. Just a 20-minute drive inland from Estepona, up a twisty mountain road, and through narrow, typically pueblo blanco streets, the fascinating and much-loved painter’s gallery spills out onto the street along with his wall of fame - a collection of photos and
newspaper clippings of the rich and famous who have made the same trip to buy a David España original artwork.
His works, painted on glass and housed in ornate repurposed frames, offer a quirky, jovial, wry smile to the absurdities of the world.
There’s a distinct feel of the mediaeval in his paintings, but much more fun, as David tips his hat to the greats of Spanish art while remaining 100 per cent uniquely him.

Community reforesting Market opens 2026
A CALL to nature lovers from the World Wildlife Fund for volunteers in the reforestation of the Mijas mountains on Sunday, February 2.
A fit and healthy day out in the Mijas countryside with scores of others, doing some good for the local environment and meeting like-minded local residents as they plant new trees.
As many in the Mijas area will remember, a wildfire decimated 2,000 hectares of pristine forests in 2022.
Now much of the charred remains have been cleared, the World Wildlife Fund is seeking volunteers to help plant new seedlings and reforest this essential natural lung in the Sierra de Mijas.
At the last event of this kind on January 12, more than 500 seedlings were planted as local people joined forces for a fun and beneficial active day in the beautiful local countryside.
Native species of trees and shrubs, including oaks, buckthorns, mastic trees, olive trees, and junipers, will be regrowing thanks to the work of more volunteers who are coming together on Sunday, Fe-

bruary 2. Mijas Council and the WWF are still calling for volunteers to join in the effort of reforesting the Sierra de Mijas, to Google wwf-Malaga, or look up WWF Malaga on social media sites, or write to Mijas Council at medioambiente@mijas.es .

MERCACENTRO, Fuengirola’s new and revamped central indoor market, is su ering a year-long delay.
The old building was totally demolished in order to make way for the new updated design. The opposition party PSOE complains that the rebuild has already cost €14 million and is now going one year past deadline.
The rebuild of the Mercacentro has been demanded by opposition parties throughout the years, and which had been originally constructed in the 1980s. The rundown and antiquated structure was said to be deterring customers from shopping from the businesses it housed rather than promoting them.
According to the town hall, delays have
come about from unforeseen issues, and now completion has been set for 2026. One of the problems was an error on the original plans that failed to show a combined subterranean construction with the adjacent building, causing construction to be halted.
Many of the market traders who were renting spots inside the old market have had to move their businesses temporarily to other premises, while others may be gone for good. Nonetheless, those wishing to return once construction has been completed will be rst on the list.
The design incorporates new and innovative materials that are hoped will reduce energy consumption and increase sustainability and will have four oors, a basement car park, and 39 market stalls.

Brad Pitt scam
BRAD PITT’S team has spoken out following a shocking €830,000 scam that targeted a French fan. A spokesperson condemned the fraud, which involved criminals posing as the Hollywood star to manipulate and steal from a 50-year-old interior designer.
Using AI-generated images and convincing messages, scammers posed as Pitt, claiming he was in financial distress due to a legal dispute with Angelina Jolie. They cited medical expenses and frozen accounts as reasons for the victim to send funds, gradually extracting €830,000 over several months before the woman realised the deception.
In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, Pitt’s representative expressed sympathy, stating: “It’s devastating to see someone manipulated in this way. Brad Pitt does

not maintain official social media accounts. Fans should remain cautious of unsolicited messages, particularly those requesting money.”
This case highlights the dangers of sophisticated online scams. Cybercriminals increasingly exploit advanced technology and emotional manipulation to target vulnerable individuals, often using the names of public figures to

build trust.
Fans are advised to verify the authenticity of online interactions and remain sceptical of financial requests from supposed celebrities. As Pitt’s team emphasised, legitimate public figures do not solicit money from fans.
By sharing her story, the victim hopes to raise awareness about such scams, reminding others to stay vigilant online.
ONE of the biggest problems of rubbish in Denmark is the proliferation of disposable cups and mugs with an estimated 300 million being thrown away each year.
A three-year pilot programme created by Aarhus Council in collaboration with the TOMRA organisation was launched in January 2024 through 25 coffee shops in the city and after a slow start it rather looked as if this was going to be something of a pointless exercise.
The turning point came in September when retailers at the week-long festival Aarhus Uke exclusively offered the reuse cups and no less than 100,000 cups were returned to machines that are scattered on streets throughout the city.
The concept is simple, there’s a five
kroner deposit when you order your first drink in a reusable cup and then you simply use that mug for future drinks until you feel that it is time to get a new one.
You dispose of your old cup by dropping it into one of the street machines and when you do that you swipe your debit card into the machine and the deposit is refunded to your bank account.
In the first year, no less than 750,000 cups have been returned and according to Aarhus Council this represents some 87 per cent of all of the cups sold during the year.
Further research shows that some 90 per cent of all residents are aware of the project and just under 40 per cent have taken a reusable cup at least once.

Are you worried about a new global
pandemic?
IT has been nearly five years since the Covid-19 pandemic swept across the globe, leaving a lasting impact on our lives. Daily routines were upended, and life seemed to come to a standstill as we sheltered in our homes waiting for the storm to pass.
Now, as society continues to recover, a new virus is sparking concerns that history might repeat itself. The Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is experiencing a surge in cases. While particularly prevalent in China, the virus is beginning to spread to other countries, including the UK. For most, HMPV causes mild symptoms similar to the common cold. However, individuals with weakened immune systems may face more severe symptoms.
Although it’s important not to worry about what might happen, some are concerned that we might be heading towards another global health crisis, so we asked our Euro Weekly News’ readers how they feel.
Matt Cox is not concerned. In his view, “it will be manufactured and fake like the last one to bring fear and more controls and restrictions.” Herbert Sample echoed this sentiment, calling it a “fake plandemic.”
Georgina Stuart also dismissed concerns, stating that the virus has “been around for over 20 years and is a flu virus,” pointing out the high number
of flu-related deaths in the UK each year. In her opinion, this virus is no different.
Angela Edley expressed a balanced perspective. While she isn’t worried, she acknowledged that it “will be sad for the world if it happens again.” Reflecting on her family’s experience with flu and Covid-19, she advised, “You can’t spend your life worrying all the time.”
Angela Arenas expressed a sense of calm, saying, “We know how to protect ourselves.” Sam Espejo, equally unfazed, remarks that “we have been there, done that.”
Kenneth Faktor Carslund explained that his main worry isn’t the virus, but people’s behaviour. He mentioned concerns about individuals rebelling against restrictions “because hey, it is more important they can go out drinking beer than saving people’s lives.”
In conclusion, the response to this poll was a clear and resounding “no.” Our readers are not concerned about the dangers of a potential pandemic but are instead focused on other factors, such as how people might behave if such a situation arises, or whether the virus is orchestrated by governments. While the future remains uncertain, it seems that the best course of action is to avoid unnecessary worry and prioritise taking care of our health.

Pension denied for 72-year-old worker
A 72-YEAR-OLD self-employed pensioner has been denied their pension despite paying into Spain’s social security system for more than 33 years, thanks to a debt hanging over them.

The incident highlights a harsh reality for workers who, even after decades of diligent contributions, can still be left without their retirement funds if they fall behind on paymentseven by a small amount.
Felicísimo, who spent over three decades in various work schemes, found himself caught in a web of bureaucracy after applying for his pension at the age of 72.
Although he had been

paying into the system through both the General Scheme and the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers (RETA), his request for a pension was turned down due to an outstanding debt of €13,903.14, owed between February 2014 and November 2016.
When the case reached the Social Court in Badajoz, the judge initially sided with Felicísimo.
The court overturned the Social Security’s decision, agreeing that the worker met all the basic requirements - such as age and overall contribution history. Citing the previous Supreme Court ruling stating that pension rights cannot
expire, the judge ruled that the debt should not block Felicísimo’s right to the pension.
Not satisfied with this ruling, the Social Security Department appealed the case.
In a decisive blow, the High Court ruled that Felicísimo was not entitled to the pension. It overturned the lower court’s decision, reaffirming that pension rights are only granted when the individual meets all contribution and payment requirements.
As the court stated, ‘pension rights are earned with prior contributions, and there are no exceptions for unpaid debts’.

How are you?
BY NICOLE KING MARBELLA MOMENTS
HOW are you?

We all say it and are asked it day in and day out. ‘How are you?’
Frequently we have absolutely no interest in the reply either way. If we are asked how we are it isn’t the ‘done’ thing to complain about the realities of our day to day, even with close friends. One thing is having a circumstance or happening that needs to be talked about or something gotten off one’s shoulders and quite another to just hear someone complain about life in general in reply to a simple ‘hello, how are you’.
Equally being too positive and relaying your life story in response to a customary greeting can also be overwhelming, as if we’re honest, it’s more of a rhetoric question.
With this in mind and to shake it up a bit, you might like the following suggestion I saw on social media as an alternative response to this mundane question.
Instead of saying ‘I’m fine’ or similar we should be equally as concise

but direct but say for example, ‘I’m successful’, or ‘happy’ or ‘thankful’. This will probably take people aback but it lends itself to initiate a more real and jovial interaction.
We live a very programmed life, with fixed daily activities and automatic responses; so it’s up to us to make even small changes to shake it up a bit.
Let’s make 2025 a year to be more aware of what we really do and say and realise it’s up to us to set new standards, simple changes like this may just help us think first about what we are saying and have a better day for doing so.
President Biden’s Farewell: A grateful goodbye and legacy of resilience
COAST TO COAST

ON January 19, as President Biden concluded his term, he spent his final day in office in Charleston, North Carolina, reflecting on his journey with gratitude. It was a day to thank those who helped secure his victory, marking the end of a remarkable chapter led with unwavering commitment to the United States.
Biden’s road to the White House
Biden’s political journey began in 1972 at just 29, when he became one of the youngest US senators. Over 36 years in Delaware, he earned a reputation for his work on foreign relations and criminal justice. After serving as Vice President under Barack Obama, he made his presidential run in 2020, defeating incumbent Donald Trump and securing the Democratic nomination.
Biden’s legacy: Resilience, relief, and reform
President Biden’s legacy is marked by resilience in crises. His quick response to Covid-19 vaccinated millions, and the $1.9 trillion Rescue Plan provided essential support. The $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill promises long-term growth. Biden also made history with the first Black woman appointed to the Supreme Court. Though challenges remain, his leadership during tough times will be remembered as a testament to his steady determination. Thank you, President Biden.
Hats off to Mrs Kamala Harris
A standing ovation goes to Vice Pre-
sident Kamala Harris, who took on a monumental role with barely a moment to breathe and somehow made it look effortless. I mean, when’s the last time you planned a major event - like, say, a wedding - with zero prep time? Not even in Vegas, Elvis! But Kamala did, and she did it with style, grace, and the kind of leadership that makes you think, “Why don’t we see more of this?” If she’d had a proper amount of time to launch a full-fledged campaign, we might just be talking about her in the big chair right now. History will remember this remarkable woman, and we’re lucky to have witnessed her rise. Thank you, Vice President Harris!
Behind the scenes of power: The presidential transition
• Last day drama: Outgoing presidents leave a heartfelt note for their successor in the Oval Office.
• Secret prep: The transition begins months before the election results.
• No holiday for the swearing-in: Inauguration Day is a spectacle, but not a public holiday.
• The Beast’s secret life: ‘The Beast’ gets a second round before the new president’s ride arrives.
• Pandemic inauguration: Biden’s swearing-in was secure and subdued due to the pandemic and Capitol riots.
• Lame duck power: Even after losing, presidents can still make major moves.
• Inaugural parade: A tradition since 1801, rain or shine!
• Oath twists: Presidents don’t always take the oath verbatim; Franklin Pierce’s ‘So help me God’ stuck.
• In the meantime: A high-speed scramble as the outgoing team clears out

La Escollera, Estepona

FOR more than 80 years, La Escollera has been serving up arguably the best seafood on the Costa del Sol.
Situated just on the edge of Estepona harbour, where freshness is guaranteed, this coastal gem has survived since 1940. Ask any native from Estepona, this is the most quintessential Malaga gastronomy. If you want to taste Malaga, go to La Escollera first.
Saturday was a hectic and noisy night bustling with serving staff and long waits to get in, even for us who had a reservation. Meal times in Spain can be rather drawn out, and no one really knows when the table before you will finally finish their dinner. But it was well worth it once inside.
This is no location for a quiet and intimate romantic candlelit Valentine’s supper. This vivacious place is for celebrating life and togetherness with friends and family and a cultural must.
We opted, possibly over-ambitiously, for the fritura to share, an abundant mixed fried fish sharing dish that was almost too much just for two. If I am honest, it was a lazy choice - the selection of fish and seafood caught that very morning was too copious to ponder. Outstanding freshness and quality.
La Escollera can be found on the lefthand side of the fishing port in Estepona as you face the sea. To reserve, call 952 806 354.

Chef Peter Halasz Havana’s Cocktail Club
SITUATED in the back streets of central Fuengirola is the only Hungarian restaurant on the Costa del Sol. At the helm is Peter Halasz, Hungarian chef who decided to introduce his warming, familiar cuisine to the Costa del Sol only a year ago, a year in which he won the hearts of the local community and made everyone, no matter what their nationality, feel like they were eating at the dining table of their own mother.
EWN: How would you describe the cuisine?
Peter: It’s very Hungarian with a fusion of the Spanish, with versions of tapas and various Spanish flavours.
In Hungary, Peter was a professional baker, something that has stood him in good stead when producing his most popular dish, Langós, an incredibly moreish fried flatbread sprinkled with cheese.
He and his wife Kate moved to Pittsburgh before the pandemic but decided to move back to Fuengirola afterwards. His wife tells me that it was because Pe-

ter likes his food, and so to save on ever-growing clothing costs, it made sense to come back to Spain where it’s cheaper.
EWN: How difficult is it to set up a business here compared to Hungary?
Peter: Expensive. We threw
all of our savings into this restaurant. It was quiet at first. We received a 4.3 star evaluation on Google. Now we have a 4.8 review status. Plus, 5 stars on Tripadvisor and Restaurant Guru’s ‘Best Restaurant award’.
Gastrovinum is in Calle Palangreros, 22, Fuengirola.

IF you love a good cocktail (and who doesn’t?), Havana Torremolinos has just the event for you. Every Sunday, they’re mixing things up at the Cocktail Club, where you can sip on some of the best cocktails in town, all while enjoying special offers that’ll keep your spirits high.
The next gathering starts at 11pm on Sunday, January 26, so head over to Plaza de los Tientos in Torremolinos and join the lively crowd for a cocktail experience. Whether you’re a fan of classics like Mojitos and Daiquiris or ready to try something new, the talented bartenders at Havana are sure to impress.
But the fun doesn’t stop here - this isn’t just about great drinks, it’s about great vibes too. So, bring your friends, unwind, and make the most of the fabulous offers at one of the coolest spots in Torremolinos.
It’s the perfect mix of fun and flavour - head over to Havana!

COSTA FOOD TOURS
What’s the big deal with Calamari?
ALTHOUGH prized in Italian and Asian cuisine, nobody embraces squid with more passion than the Spanish; and you can’t avoid it!
It is a beloved ingredient in Spanish cuisine, featuring prominently in a variety of traditional dishes, showcasing Spain’s strong connection to seafood. Spanish cuisine prioritises fresh, high-quality seafood, making calamari dishes particularly flavourful.
The ubiquitous squid (Calamari or properly ‘Calamares’ in Spain) is a feature on almost all traditional Spanish bar and restaurant offerings, but why is it so popular?
Well for a start it’s incredibly versatile and served in various forms with numerous different cooking methods, which we will explore below, and it’s also low in calories and fat and high in protein.
It’s abundant in the oceans, with generally short lifespans but fast reproductive cycles, so they are generally resilient to fishing pressures. It’s also sustainable with more and more fishing fleets employing sustainable fishing practices.
So what can you expect to see on menus:
Calamares a la Romana (Deep Fried Squid Rings) - coated in a light batter, similar to tempura and often served as a tapa with lemon wedges and alioli (garlic mayo).
Calamares en su Tinta (Squid In Its Own Black Ink) - cooked with onions, garlic, tomato, and white wine, served with rice for a rich and unique flavour.
Calamari a la Plancha (Grilled Squid)the squid is marinated with olive oil, garlic, and herbs, then grilled for a smoky flavour. A lighter preparation that highlights the squid’s natural flavour.
Arroz Negro (Black Rice) - a black rice

Drumming together
PLAZA DEL TORREÓN in La Cala de Mijas is set to get a rude awakening on Sunday, February 2, with a free-to-attend percussion workshop.
rhythms.

The group Percusión Social Espacio Drang is organising sessions running over four weeks in the art of drumming with choreography in which participants will be able to enjoy a fully dynamic and participatory class experience.
The workshop will take place over two days, the first on Sunday, February 6, with an introduction and practice with percussion instruments.
And then the second session on Sunday, February 9, with exercises and dynamics for a drumming methodology.
There will be a third session on Sunday, February 16, with exercises and dynamics for drumming in a group.

dish made with squid ink, calamari, garlic, and seafood stock. Typically garnished with alioli.
Calamares Estofados (Squid Stew)slowly braised, normally in tomato sauce and spices with capers and olives, this is tasty squid comfort food.
Rellenos de Calamares (Stuffed Squid) - whole squid tubes are stuffed with ingredients like breadcrumbs, seafood, and herbs, then baked, grilled or simmered in sauce.
Bocadillo de Calamares ( Squid Sandwich ) - very popular in Madrid, it’s made with fried calamari rings stuffed into crusty bread. Often enjoyed as street food or a quick snack.

Calamari Ceviche (Marinated Raw Squid) - a staple in South America but its influence has been significant on the Iberian peninsula. Thinly sliced raw squid, bathed in lime and/or lemon juice, normally with chiññis and red onion, simply delicious.
So there you go, a little tour of something that is so important to Spanish cuisine, but hopefully it’s given you an insight into the fact there’s more than just deep fried squid rings to come from this hugely versatile seafood. Enjoy!!
The idea is, as much as lessons in being a member of a marching percussion group, to create a social experience in rhythm with one another in La Cala. It will also be a little history lesson as the groups will learn about the history of Afro-Brazilian beats, the only prerequisite being that participants have fun. Rhythms that will be introduced will include Samba Reggae, and Funk
And will end with dynamics and musical percussion exercises on February 20.
Sessions will take place in the Plaza de El Torreón in La Cala from 11.30am to 1pm each Sunday of February.
Given the limited nature of the places, prior registration is required by phone on 952 590 380 or by email to cultura@mi jas.es.
Blue Stompers Speakeasy

FAVOURITES at the Speakeasy, the Blue Stompers Quartet, a gig of fusion of R&B, Afro-American Blues, and Boogie Woogie, will take place at Speakeasy Jazz Club & Cocktails on Friday, January 24 at 11.30pm.
With members from the UK, Cyprus, Finland, and Spain, the Blue Stompers Quartet is a multi-national hidden treasure that has been a foot-tapping mainstay of the northern and southern European music scene for many a year. The Stompers sound like Boogie Woogie, Afro-American blues, 40s New Orleans jazz and the rawest R&B of Dr Feelgood.
With Pablo Stylianou (singer and harmonica) originally from Greenwich in London, who moved to Spain in 2002 and has played with a whole host of Blues bands along the Costa del Sol before forming The Blue Stompers Jump Review in 2014. His biggest influences are Little Walter, James Harman, James Cotton, and Kim Wilson to name a few.
Victor Sanchez is considered a genuine inspiration by many and has performed alongside some of the Costa del Sol’s top musicians. He has a distinct style that sets him apart from the others.
Before relocating to Spain, Finnish musician Mark Duus was a mainstay of the Blues and Rockabilly scene, performing with some of Finland’s top bands.

The evening began with a warm welcome and the attentive and affable staff, who guided us to our table in the beautifully styled restaurant. The ambiance immediately drew us in: soft, low lighting,

large trees, and fire heaters creating a cosy, boho-tribal vibe. A DJ set the tone as we savoured our sharing starters, which were nothing short of extraordinary.

For the main course, we opted for the marinated Korean Chicken as well as the Tel Aviv Fish Shawarma, a sautéed seabass, served with Lebanese bread and a tomato-red onion chimichurri, making for a delightful fusion of subtle spice and the bold flavours of the natural ingredients. It was a dish that highlighted Nomad’s dedica -

“From Despair to Dignity: Together, We Can Change Lives”
Showering the community
IMAGINE your life being turned upside down - spinning out of control, everything familiar ripped away. A tragedy strikes, and suddenly, you’re unmoored. You lose your child, your lifelong partner, your job - your compass in life. You’re in freefall, in a foreign place with no understanding of the language, the system, or the bureaucracy. You have no network, no one to turn to. Slowly, piece by piece, everything that defines you is stripped away - your income, your home, your pet, even the comfort of a warm bed.
Your despair becomes your constant companion.
Now, imagine finding yourself on the cold, hard streets of Fuengirola. Your despair deepens into confusion and fear. You walk endlessly, exhausted and empty. When you can walk no more, you lie down on the few belongings you still cling to. There is no money for food or even a warm drink. Strangers pass by - some indifferent, some judging, some hurling abuse, and shockingly, some degrading you further because they can. Life was never meant to be this way, but there’s no way out.
No place to shower. No comforting arms. No hope.
Now imagine this for just five minutes - it’s unbearable. Five minutes is too long, yet for many, this is their daily reality. Rising costs and advancing years mean more people are falling into this darkness than ever. But this is where Asociación Adintre

and the incredible Joyce Gyimah step in. With her tireless work and boundless compassion, Joyce offers a haven - a shelter from the cruel streets.
Yet, like everything, it takes mo-

Yet, like everything, it takes money to keep this vital lifeline running. That’s why the wonderful Tibbi Aquila has created a ‘dinner with a difference’ to bring hope where it’s desperately needed.

Join us at La Scala Marbella on Thursday February 20, 2025, at 7.00pm. This evening is dedicated to raising €11,788.35 - funds that will ensure the Adintre showers can open seven days a week, fully staffed, offering warmth, care, and dignity to those who need it most.
Why does this matter?
Because those showers are more than just a pla-
ce to get clean. They’re a reason to wake up, to feel human again. A cup of coffee, a kind word, and most importantly - the gift of hope.
This night will bring together entertainers from the coast performing free of charge, generous business leaders donating auction items, and local heroesYOU - the caring community that never fails to rise to the occasion. Every cent raised will go toward making a life-changing difference for those who can no longer help themselves.

Sounds good to me
LEAPY LEE SAYS IT
OTHERS THINK
IT

THE problem with most of the woke brigade is that they are generally so far up the self-righteous soap boxes they categorically refuse to entertain the opinions of others. When arguments or discussions tend to veer away from their points of view, they are always the first to accuse their dissenters of right-wing ideals or racism. They then sit smugly back, fully aware that the discussion is now over, and the onus is now on those who disagreed with their rhetoric to explain why they are not racially motivated! It’s a clever ploy designed to crush the freedom of speech and encouraged by many a political despot throughout history. I don’t buy it and categorically refuse to waste this short narrative explaining my strong views on the subject. I believe in live and let live. If it causes no harm to others and doesn’t weaponise my points of view, I couldn’t care less how anyone handles their current manifestation. I also have no problem with how people
wish to be addressed. Tom, Dick, Harry, Those, Them or Wottsit, it truly is all the same to me.
What I do care about, however, is reserving the right to also refer to myself as I choose. Being pressured to adapt to another individual’s views and opinions sticks in my craw. Unfortunately, this is often the problem with disgruntled minorities. Many of them suffer from insecurity or inferiority complexes. Consequently, the more of us they can inveigle into embracing their philosophies, the more secure they feel (The mentality of a cult!) To achieve this, they must convince others to join them or amend their beliefs.
Sooner or later, however, majorities begin to resent their often lame-brained intrusions, and their actions begin to achieve the reverse effect (The public taking the law into their own hands and blocking motorways was a case in point!) One of the real casualties in this whole diatribe of politically correct ‘uman rights is common sense.
I vividly recall some idiotic ‘woke goodies’ that came to light a while back. The University of Salford issued
a subject matter warning for Dickens’s Oliver Twist if it causes ‘distress or anxiety’ among literature students. The University of Northampton also issued ‘alert warnings’ to their students about Orwell’s 1984, Dickens’s Great Expectations and, of all things - Bronte’s Jane Eyre! The University stated that it has the responsibility to ‘prepare students for potentially sensitive topics of child abuse, domestic violence, or racial prejudice’. They probably don’t allow winners or losers, either!
Of course, this is not quite as ridiculous as it sounds. The more they relieve the young of responsibility, the easier they manipulate toward their nanny state ideals. Left-wing political control has always hovered behind all this undemocratic PC rhetoric, and I am delighted to see Trump reinstated. One of his election promises is to ban the woke ideology from his military and schools. He’s also obviously not too keen on Starmer and his brigade. All sounds good to me.

A GROUNDBREAKING discovery deep in the caves of Gibraltar has turned the page on their history, proving once again that their intelligence was ahead of its time.
A team of 30 researchers from six different countries have just revealed a stunning new find that could rewrite human history. Tucked away in the depths of the Gorham Cave complex in Gibraltar, archaeologists have uncovered a 60,000-year-old structure used by Neanderthals to make highly sophisticated stone tools. It’s not just any old find, this one has completely shattered our assumptions about these ancient humans.
The find came from the Cave of Vanguard, one of several caves that make up the larger Gorham Cave system. And what did they uncover? A carefully crafted pit dug into the cave’s sediment. Neanderthals
Gibraltar discovery

Neanderthals were well ahead of their time.
used it to create tar from local plants, primarily the sticky shrub Cistus ladanifer. But this wasn’t a simple case of boiling a few leaves - no, this was a complex process involving ingenuity, patience, and a deep understanding of the environment. Neanderthals weren’t just gathering plants. They were digging pits to bury branches soaked in resin, covering them
with sand and guano to block out oxygen, and then gently burning the material in a way that would preserve it - not destroy it. Hours of careful effort resulted in the perfect tar, ready to bond stone tools to wooden handles. They understood the complex chemistry behind tar production, meaning they were well ahead of their time.
Royal clemency

IN a move that might raise a few eyebrows, King Philippe has granted seven acts of clemency in 2024, according to figures obtained by Belga through Belgium’s Justice Department (SPF Justice). While the total number may not be staggering, it signals a subtle shift in the royal approach to justice.
The Belgian monarch, who is tasked with granting clemency on the recommendation of the Minister of Justice, decided to grant a total of seven graces last year. This is slightly up from the three granted in 2023, although the numbers tend to fluctuate year on year.
Out of the seven clemencies, four were related to driving offences, including two cases where sentences had been suspended. However, the Justice Department remains tight-lipped about the specifics of the other three cases. The public remains in the dark, leaving plenty of room for speculation.
It’s not just a select few who are hoping to catch a break from the monarch. A total of 574 Belgians submitted requests for clemency last year. That’s slightly fewer than in 2023, which saw 591 applications, but almost half the number seen in 2022, when requests peaked at a whopping 1,084.

The buyback was equivalent to a 4 per cent return to shareholders, Cellnex chief executive Marco Patuano told the media.
In the past he had said that he wished to put Cellnex on an equal footing with other companies regarding shareholder remuneration.
Repurchasing was a ‘no-brainer’, bearing in mind the Cellnex share price, he added.
BANCO SANTANDER subsidiary, Santander US Capital Markets was one of eight companies that were fined for using messaging apps for business messages.
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) cracked down on emails and messaging services in 2021, maintaining that companies could use them to communicate outside recordkeeping controls.
The most recent SEC fines totalled $63.1 million, with Santander’s $4 million (€3.9m) fine one of the lowest, and the heftiest going to investment management company Blackstone having to pay $12 million (€11.7m).
Cutting back
January 15 to an audience of political, business and food industry figures.
The report studied the impact of Spanish gastronomy in its widest sense from agricultural production to food distribution that encompassed tourism and the hospitality sector.
It also pointed out that the Spain’s gastronomy business was reflected by soaring exports between 2013, when the country exported food products worth €35 billion, and 2023 by which time these had risen by 88 per cent to approximately €66 billion.

PALENCIA biscuit manufacturer
Gullon announced record revenues of €690 million for 2024, 9.5 per cent up on 2023.
The volume of biscuits sold also rose last year, with a 6.5 per cent upturn compared with the national average of 3.4 per cent.
“We are growing at a faster pace than the market,” chief executive Juan Miguel Martinez Gabaldon explained to Cinco Dias, adding that the company foresaw sales of €1 billion via its overseas markets by 2030.
These currently generate 44 per cent of Gullon’s sales and are expected to reach 50 per cent in five years’ time, he said.
DYSON has cancelled plans for a £100 million (€118.9 million) research hub in Bristol. Staff due to move to Bristol will remain in Malmesbury (Wiltshire) while the Bristol installation will be leased to other businesses.
The announcement comes 18 months after the vacuum cleaner and hairdryer manufacturer announced the Bristol project and six months after slashing 1,000 UK jobs.
Earlier, Jake Dyson, the company’s Chief Engineer and son of founder Sir James Dyson, said the centre was a ‘vital hub’ contributing to the firm’s future.

AMAZON has bought 148 electric Mercedes-Benz and Volvo heavy goods vehicles for making deliveries in Britain.
The move is part of Amazon’s £300 million (€356.4 million) investment in green transport for the UK, after announcing in 2022 that it hoped eventually to change to electric vehicles.
The e-lorries should be in use over the next 18 months, while the online commerce company said it will also start sending deliveries by rail and using postman-type trolleys to reduce its carbon footprint.

Turning round
VODAFONE ESPAÑA, owned by Zegona since June 2024, reported revenues of €903 million for the second quarter of its July-October financial year. This was 1.5 per cent below the previous quarter’s turnover, although Zegona’s €318 million gross operating income increased 6.35 per cent.
Steel blow
A TEESSIDE return is unlikely for loss-making British Steel, recently in rescue talks with the government. It has modified plans to build ‘green’ arc furnaces in Middlesbrough and Scunthorpe and will install both in Scunthorpe, the Sunday Times revealed.
ROYAL MAIL’S owner International Distribution Services (IDS) said it was on track to return to profit, thanks to Christmas parcel deliveries.
Tracked parcels sent over the holiday season increased 19 per cent to 188 million while revenue rose by 2.4 per cent during the last quarter.
In contrast, the volume of addressed letters had fallen by 7 per cent although this was compensated by dearer stamps, with a first class stamp now costing £1.65 (€1.96).

Madrid departure
SHELL plans to close its Madrid gas trading hub Pavilion Energy for tax reasons, claimed undisclosed sources quoted in Spain’s financial daily, Cinco Dias
The UK-based company bought Pavilion Energy from Singapore-based investment fund Temasek in June 2024 ‘for hundreds of millions of dollars’ although below the $2 billion (€1.94 billion) that it had hoped for.
Pavilion Energy’s staff of around 50 have now learnt that if they wish to remain with the company, they must be prepared to relocate to Shell offices in London, Dubai or Singapore. Shell, meantime, said that Spain remained an important oil and electricity market for the company, which would continue to meet customers’ energy needs ‘through Spain-based teams.’
an adjusted operating profit during the present financial year, excluding the cost of voluntary redundancies, despite the ‘challenging macroeconomic backdrop’ and two years of losses.
In a January 14 statement, IDS revealed that Royal Mail’s £3.57 billion (€4.24 billion) takeover by the Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky – already approved by the UK government - had received regulatory clearance from Europe and the US.
Once the deal is completed, Royal Mail will be delisted from the London Stock Exchange.
Kretinsky, who already owns with a 27.5 per cent stake in Royal Mail via Vesa Equity, which he entirely owns, said in November that he foresaw an increase in costs owing to the last UK Budget and did not rule out increased automation.

landlord
THE Spanish government will have to pay approximately €4 billion to acquire 40,000 properties worth an average €100,000 each from the ‘bad bank’ Sareb, which is 51 per cent publicly owned, with the remainder belonging to Santander, CaixaBank and Sabadell. These homes will then be transferred to the newly-created Public Housing Company and sold or rented at affordable prices.
Festive cheer
OCADO reported record sales of £715.8 million (€849.5 million) over 2024’s last quarter which included the Christmas period, an increase of 17.5 per cent on 2023, with order volumes rising 17 per cent. Ocado referred to the festive food selection of its joint venture partner Marks & Spencer as a ‘major driver’ of sales.

Spain’s mushroom & movie magic
LOOKING for an unusual day trip this spring? Head to Juzcar, a charming Andalucian village known for its striking blue houses – Smurf Village!
Err, let me explain. Juzcar wasn’t always blue. In 2011, to promote the cartoon movie ‘The Smurfs’, the small village was painted sky blue for ceremonies and photo shoots. Large statues of the Smurfs and other props from the movie were placed around the village.
While the initial plan was to repaint it white afterwards, the residents loved the new look and its surprising success - over 80,000 tourists flocked to see ‘Smurf Village’.
Sadly, in 2017 Juzcar’s right to use the Smurf name and franchise was removed, though Juzcar is still commonly known by Spaniards as Smurf Village (el pueblo de los pitufos). Officially the village rebranded itself as ‘La Aldea Azul’

And why was Juzcar chosen, you ask? Because the blue creatures called ‘Smurfs’ live in mushrooms and this village has an abundance of fungi - over 150 species. Just like the Smurfs’ mushroom houses, Juzcar is a haven for mushroom enthusiasts.
So ditch the usual tourist trail and explore this delightful blue village. You might even spot the one house (painted white) that refused to join in the Smurf transformation - Enjoy!

Man’s border trouble Woman makes history

NEWS from Germany elicits that a Polish man is suing the federal government over strict border control checks, that he feels are unnecessary considering he enters daily from his town in Poland to work, and that these checks go against the Schengen Agreement.
Jakub Wolinski, 37, drives into Germany from his nearby Polish town Zgorzelec, to complete his daily commute for work. He feels Gorlitz, the location in eastern Germany he has to drive through to get to his business job, is ‘deteriorating’ its quality of life for those coming from across the border.
Wolinski drives in a minivan that has tinted windows, something that has clearly got the attention of German authorities, as they aim to clamp down on illegal immigrants accessing the country, amid terrorist attacks that have also been a big issue here.
Wolinski feels hard done by, and that he did not recognise that Germany has surpassed the prior abolishment of Schengen border checks in the case of suspicious vehicles.
“The German government must stop the checks at the Polish border immediately. It is not acceptable that Germany is systematically breaching European law with these checks.”
The man feels like he is a suspected people smuggler every time he crosses the border, when in reality, he is an ordinary citizen commuting for work.
A 21-YEAR-OLD Norwegian woman has smashed a record that has stood for decades, becoming the youngest person to reach the South Pole on skis - solo and unassisted. Ms Karen Kylleso has achieved the unthinkable, covering a gruelling 702 miles in just under 54 days, all on her own.
The brave adventurer took the world by storm by achieving the landmark 114 years after legendary Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen first set foot on the South Pole in 1911.
Kylleso, born on May 9, 2003, shared images of her triumph on Instagram, showing her standing triumphantly at the South Pole. She has officially dethroned Frenchman Pierre Hedan, who held the record for being the youngest person to reach the South Pole solo and unassisted - until now. Hedan, who achieved the feat at 26, had held that title for a mere year before Kylleso came along and sto-

But the journey wasn’t easy. In a pre-expedition interview with Shackleton Adventure Company, Kylleso admitted that putting on weight had been one of the toughest parts of the journey. “Since I’m smaller than the average male doing this, I need extra weight and strength to pull the same load,” she explained. And it worked - she gained 10 per cent in body weight before embarking on the mission of a lifetime.

MALAGA and Alicante are the sixth and 10th most populated cities in Spain, respectively. They are also ranked fourth and sixth among Spain’s provincial capitals in terms of population.
Despite their competitive relationship, starting with FITUR 2025, both cities aim to shift their focus from competition to collaboration.
At the International Tourism Fair in Madrid (FITUR), which runs until Sunday January 26, the mayors of both cities, Luis Barcala of Alicante and Francisco de la Torre of Malaga, are set to sign a partnership agreement to exchange knowledge and experiences.
Both cities thrive in the service and tourism sectors, offering similar attractions such as beaches and cultural events. This partnership offers a chance for both cities to evaluate what strategies work best in a highly competitive market.
Alicante will also have the advantage of being named the Gastronomic Capital of Spain in 2025.
Axarquia
Almond milk initiative
AXARQUIA is cooperating with an almond milk project whose first phase is already underway in Sicily.
“The aim is to produce milk from Noto almonds using machinery that extracts the liquid directly from the nuts,” said Paolo Pepe, who heads the Nav (Noto Almond Valley) 4.0 project.
The prototype has been specifically designed at Milan’s Polytechnic University, Pepe explained.
The Coldiretti de Siracusa agricultural cooperative and Nav 4.0 first became interested in Axarquia owing to the similarities in their climates, terrain and way of life.
“We didn’t hesitate to get involved, as almond milk is growing in popularity,” said Jorge Martin, president of the Axarquia Mancomunidad group of towns.
“The area’s agriculture is thriving, along with tourism, and many families depend on the land, working in cooperatives and agricultural firms,” he added.
Mallorca Archaeology hub
ARCHAEOLOGISTS have approved the construction of the Centre for Archaeology of Mallorca at the Tanca de Can Domènech in Alcudia.
A preventive excavation was carried out last September to assess whether any archaeological remains were present, given the proximity to the Pollentia site. The results confirm that the project can proceed, as no significant archaeological findings were uncovered that would block its development.
While some structures and elements potentially related to ancient agricultural use were documented, no major discoveries were found to hinder the project. The Consell de Mallorca is now moving forward with the design phase, which will outline the specific needs of the facility. This will be carried out in collaboration with the Alcudia Town Council.
Vice-President of the Consell de Mallorca and councillor for Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, highlighted that the centre will house over 40,000 archaeological pieces from sites across the island.
Costa Blanca North The fairest one of all
THE new year has started with an accolade for Altea, with National Geographic naming the picturesque town the ‘most beautiful town in Spain’.
Often referred to as the ‘dome of the Mediterranean’, Altea entrances with its stunning vistas and rich cultural heritage.
The magazine’s portrayal of Altea paints a poetic picture of the delightful town. It describes how it awakens under the gentle warmth of the morning sun, with the sound of seagulls filling the air, as fishing boats gently rock the harbour. This, of course, serves as a reminder of how Altea was once a town of fishermen.
Today, Altea sparkles with its narrow cobblestone streets, white houses decorated with blooming flowers such as geraniums, jasmine, and bougainvillea, colourful doors, and breathtaking views of the Mediterranean and the Sierra de Bernia mountains.
Almeria Global recognition
THE Pulpi Geode, located in the Sierra del Aguilon, is a massive underground cave or chamber filled with enormous gypsum crystals, some as long as two metres. This stunning natural formation could soon be recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site after being nominated for Spain’s tentative list.
Discovered in 1999, the Pulpi Geode is the second-largest geode in the world, following the Cave of the Crystals in Mexico. In 2022, it was declared a Natural Monument by Andalucia, highlighting its geological and cultural significance. The recent move to nominate it for World Heritage status reflects its extraordinary value.
Juanma Moreno, president of the Junta de Andalucia, expressed his excitement about the nomination, calling it a significant milestone for the region and the province of Almeria. If the nomination is approved, the geode will join Spain’s list of natural wonders, opening the door for international recognition and protection.
Costa Calida Trailblazing Murcia
IN 2025, the Region of Murcia became the second region in Spain with the most Blue Trails.
The Association for Environmental Education and Consumer Affairs (Adeac) has awarded 11 new Blue Trail distinctions to eight municipalities, bringing the total to 26.
A Blue Trail is a designated path that meets environmental, educational, and accessibility standards. These trails promote sustainable tourism by encouraging outdoor activities while respecting nature.
With these new trails, Murcia is now second only to Galicia, which has 54 Blue Trails and tied with the Valencian Community. This year, Murcia has added the most new Blue Trails of any region in Spain.
The 26 Blue Trails in Murcia cover more than 150 kilometres, making up 15 per cent of Spain’s total Blue Trail network, which now spans over 1,000 kilometres nationwide.

Walk training
IF your dog pulls on the leash during walks, it can make outings stressful for both of you. Fortunately, with patience and consistent training, you can teach your dog to walk calmly by your side. Here’s how to stop your dog from pulling.
Start by using the right equipment. A harness designed to discourage pulling, such as a front-clip harness, can provide better control without causing discomfort or harm. Avoid using a collar that might put pressure on your dog’s neck.
During walks, pay attention to your dog’s behaviour. If they start pulling, immediately stop walking. Don’t pull back on the leash, as this can

Be patient - progress may take time.
reinforce the pulling behaviour. Instead, stand still and wait for your dog to return to your side. Once they do, reward them with praise or a treat. This teaches your dog that walking calmly results in positive reinforcement. Practise walking in low-distraction environments first, gradually introducing more stimulating surroundings as your dog learns to focus on you. Short, frequent training sessions are more effective than long walks. Use a consistent command like ‘let’s go’ to signal when to begin walking and reward your dog when they follow. Be patient - progress may take time, but with consistency, your dog will learn to stop pulling and enjoy calmer, more enjoyable walks.

The electric motor delivers 258ps for a 0-62mph performance of 7.6 seconds.
For customers prioritising lon ger range usage the 80kWh version enables a range of up to 345miles and with 244ps reaches 100kph/62mph in 7.8secs. Both versions produce the same 320Nm of torque with a rear-wheel drive layout. The longer range 80kWh Mazda6e will charge from 10 to 80 per cent in 45 minutes and like the smaller battery version supports DC rapid charging.
Design details of note include frameless doors, a bold lighting signature and integrated door handles - all
of which create a modern appearance. At the front there are new glowing signature wing lights around the grille, dynamic illumination and the lighting also indicates charge status.
At the rear the Mazda6e’s stylish rear lamp design and horizontal taillight bar ensure a light signature as distinctive as the front, while newly designed Mazda lettering replaces the brand logo badge at the rear of the car. Another unique for Mazda
ble rear spoiler.
Inside, the Mazda6e’s cabin has a panoramic roof and premium materials feature throughout both the available trim levels: Takumi and Takumi Plus. Takumi models will feature beige or black artificial leather, while Takumi Plus offers premium tan Nappa leather. Mazda have always had a premium feel to their interiors even if they are sometimes, arguably, not aesthetically exciting.
Prices for the Mazda6e will be announced nearer the launch date.
Monoxide madness
TWO-TIME Tour de France champion
Jonas Vingegaard has called for a ban on the controversial use of carbon monoxide rebreathing, a method employed by some athletes to measure performance. In an interview with Le Monde, the Visma-Lease a Bike rider highlighted concerns about the misuse of the technique to artificially enhance athletic abilities.
Vingegaard explained that his team uses the method responsibly to measure blood volume and haemoglobin mass, critical indicators for cyclists. “We inhale carbon monoxide before and after altitude training to calculate maximum oxygen absorption capacity,” he said. However, he raised concerns that some athletes abuse the process by regularly inhaling small doses of carbon monoxide, which he claims significantly boosts performance.
The practice first drew widespread attention during last year’s Tour de France when Escape Collective reported that riders from multiple teams used carbon monoxide to optimise altitude training. The gas is typically employed
as a tracer to monitor oxygen diffusion in the lungs and haemoglobin levels but can become problematic when misused.
In December, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) announced that its management committee would discuss a possible ban on carbon monoxide rebreathing for medical reasons during a meeting in France from January 31 to February 1. The UCI warned of the potential health risks, including headaches, fatigue, nausea, chest pain, and even loss of consciousness, when the gas is inhaled repeatedly outside controlled medical conditions.

AWFL Over 50s
Malaga WFC 5 v 0 AC Benahavis
Malaga were hoping to extend their 100 per cent record at the top of the table with this first match of the New Year, whilst Benahavis were just as determined to gain ground on them! The visitors showed great determination and limited the home side to a 1-0 lead at half time, courtesy of a penalty from Fran. After the break, the hosts upped their game with Andres puttting Malaga further ahead with a free kick and Mark Coleman adding a third with a sublime curler from distance. Roberto then added a fourth and substitute Seba flicked in the fifth to round off a fine second half performance and keep Malaga in top spot.

MAIO Cup Over 50s
Boca Seniors Competa 2 v 8 Malaga WFC
Competa began by making light of current form and, despite much domination and several goal attempts by the visitors, defended doggedly and gave themselves a 2-0 lead, courtesy of an area encroachment penalty, converted by Paul Kavanagh, and a swift breakaway strike to give Kavanagh his second. Malaga’s captain Fran pulled one back before half time but kudos to Competa for holding onto their lead. After the break, Malaga reorganised and used their substitutes to good effect, eventually finding their scoring boots with goals from Fran (2 to complete his hat-trick), Javi, Mark Coleman, Andres, Marcello and Roberto, giving them a better chance of progressing to the finals.

Malaga WFC 2 v 3 AC Benahavis
Salas have to exit early due to an injury.
Under Spanish law, and the Football Federation regulations, any breach like this would mean a player can face the loss of his licence to play for up to five years, and even receive a jail sentence for up to three years, as well as a fine of around €30,000.
In a game notable for its number of penalties, the visiting league leaders took an early two goal advantage before Scott pulled one back from the penalty spot for the hosts. Benahavis then scored a penalty of their own to give them a 3-1 lead at the break. In the second half, another Benahavis penalty was well-saved by Robert in the home goal and this was followed shortly after by another Malaga penalty which was coolly despatched by Scott for his second. However, despite a sprited effort by Malaga, the league leaders held on to take all three points and continue their 100% record.
Nerja United v Real Calahonda
The match was abandoned due to heart problems suffered by Nerja player Dave Burgess. Thanks to swift action by Nerja staff, Dave was treated with specialist equipment at the scene and is now recuperatng. Of course, on behalf of all at Nerja United and all clubs belonging to the AWFL, we wish Dave and his family all the best for his continued speedy recovery.
See you next week!
