A spectacular tribute to Scotland at The Beach House Marbella

BURNS NIGHT at The Beach House Marbella was a dazzling celebration of Scotland’s rich cultural heritage, blending tradition, festivity, and outstanding hospitality. Guests were greeted in style, stepping onto the red carpet to the stirring sounds of bagpipes, setting the tone for an unforgettable evening.

The venue was transfor med into a Scottish haven, with tartan-draped tables and festive balloons that added a lively charm to the ambience. Mark Connor, the evening’s entertainer, was a true star. His vibrant performance had every guest on their feet, ensuring the night was as dynamic as it was memorable.

evening was the ceremonial ‘Address to the Haggis’, masterfully performed by Mike and Diane Ross. Their spirited tribute to Robbie Burns brought the poet’s legacy to life, filling the room with admiration and laughter. Special recognition goes to Guy and his incredible team, whose seamless service and attention to detail made the evening extraordinary. From start to finish, it was a memory-making celebration on the sunny south coast of Spain.

The five-course meal was a testament to The Beach House’s renowned culinary excellence. After a comforting coc-

ktail of leekie soup, guests were treated to the traditional neeps and tatties served alongside the legendary haggis. For those not quite ready for a ‘Braveheart’ moment, there were plenty of alternatives to suit all tastes. The meal

concluded on a high note with a decadent cranachan cheesecake - a delightful twist on the classic Scottish dessert.

We can’t wait to join them again for another spectacular event at The Beach House Marbella!

THIS April, a renowned family-run restaurant on the Costa del Sol celebrates 16 years of delighting diners. We spoke with Alba del Valle from Restaurante El Olivo de La Cala about their journey, seasonal specialties, and what sets their establishment apart on the Costa del Sol.

When asked what inspired their passion for hospitality, Alba shared, “My father has dedicated his life to the hospitality industry. He started when he was very young. He always dreamed of opening his own restaurant, and after starting in a smaller venue in Zoco, we’ve grown into what we are today.”

What dishes would you recommend?

The menu is bursting with standout dishes, including cochinillo (suckling pig), lamb, and juicy chuletones (T-bone steaks). For starters, the home-made chuletón croquettes and confit artichokes with Payoyo cheese sauce come highly recommended. The res-

taurant also prides itself on offering over 30 starter options, with plenty of gluten-free choices to accommodate all guests.

So, what makes the restaurant unique?

“Our extensive menu, spacious venue for celebrations, and a wine list that guests love all play a role. But most importantly, many of our dishes are born from the chefs’ imagination, which keeps our menu fresh and exciting. We’ve come up with our own signature dishes

throughout the years, and some are extremely popular. Diners won’t find them anywhere else.”

Seasonality is at the heart of their offerings.

The menu features fresh vegetables, fruits, and fish, with creative weekly specials crafted from these prime ingredients.

THERE’S much more to tapas than calamari, patatas bravas and croquetas. Those most recognised and popular dishes, often delivered out of the freezer, promoted by billboards of faded photos, are just the mainstay of typical tourist haunts!

But there is an alternative. The range of tapas is huge and a testament to not only the diversity of Spanish cuisine, but to the cultural and social significance of the tapas tradition. Hopping from bar to bar, enjoying different tastes in each one is what we call ‘tapear’.

It’s a real opportunity to expand your culinary horizons, but if you don’t know what to order in the tucked away places where the locals eat, then help is at hand.

Costa Food Tours take you on a journey of discovery with a seasoned local expert who will also pair your (perhaps surprising) tapas with perfect matching wines.

The delight of a back streets exploration of traditional bars, where everything is cooked to order, is simply a revelation in terms of true Spanish food culture.

Our journey took us to hidden gems; places you are unlikely to find on your own. They are run by passionate staff with an obvious understanding of tapas cuisine and a respect for the quality and seasonality of our home grown, wild, reared, cured, fished and ultimately delicious

Embracing years of experience, understanding and research, Costa Food Tours bring a lively, informative and fun approach to this iconic Spanish food ins-

titution.

Imagine being in a busy small bar with a great atmosphere, surrounded by boisterous Spanish natives and eating octopus ceviche whilst sipping on Spain’s best white wines.

Perhaps sitting outside with a nice glass of rosé and one of the most archetypal, but relatively unknown, tapas dishes.

Or enjoying a delicious red with one of Spain’s emblematic meat treats.

And, taking advantage of Spain’s bounteous produce, there are plenty of adventurous options for vegetarians as well.

This is not just about eating and drinking, it’s an immersive experience that gives you an insight into the heart of the local food lifestyle, with plenty of background, knowledge and history included along the way.

Chef Gareth, culinary artist

GARETH GREENWOOD, ex-rugby player from Castleford, turned chef, took a holiday to the Costa del Sol 16 years ago, fell in love with the place, and stayed.

Chef Gareth is the secret ingredient in Alhaurin el Grande’s extremely popular Mucho Más res taurant, the one that keeps the restaurant filling to capacity even in the winter months.

EWN: What got you into cheffing?

Gareth: I’d always wanted to be either a chef or a pro rugby player. I had trained until level three to be a chef, and then I broke my leg and my arm playing rugby, and that decided which way I was going.

EWN: How about sourcing ingredients for your dishes in this area?

Gareth: It has varied. Now

we’re working with an excellent supplier who will go out of his way to get what we need. But there are some things: Crab Apples. You can’t get them here, and we have searched everywhere to find them. Microgreens, micro herbs, and edible flowers are becoming bigger now in Spain, so that’s good. We’re going more now with locally sourced, especially the goat cheese suppliers and honey producers.

Mucho Más is a breath of fresh air in the area, attracting all nationalities with something very different from the average restaurants, all produced with elegance, exceptionally beautiful aesthetics, and a lot of love.

Good ol’ chat

AGE CONCERN MARBE-

LLA - San Pedro knows the importance of having a good chat. Their members now have a choice of five fabulous drop-in coffee mornings where they can meet new friends and catch up with old ones, and membership is completely free.

But it’s not just the fun side of things to look forward to. Doctors now extol the benefits of talking, which in retirement can help because currently there is

no way to prevent memory loss.

Firstly, talking activates the brain because language and thoughts communicate with each other, and that naturally speeds up the thinking process and improves memory capacity.

Secondly, more conversation helps prevent mental illness and reduces stress.

Older people tend to be very stoic and bottle things up. Providing them with the opportunity to talk more

and listening to them will help them feel better.

Also, speech exercises the active muscles in the face and throat as well as increasing the capacity of the lungs.

If you’ve not yet been to one of Age Concern’s coffee mornings (from 11am to 12.30pm or a bit later), do put them on your ‘to-do’ list. Full details are available by calling 689 355 198, or dropping them a line at info@ ageconcernmarbella.com
