A MAN has been sentenced to two years in prison for killing a Nerja councillor on a hunting trip. He was convicted of the negligent manslaughter of Councillor Jose Luis Pezzi in November 2006. The death occurred on a property in Cordoba when the former Partido Popular councillor was taking part in a hunting expedition. The hunter who shot him has also been banned from keeping weapons for three years, his gun has been confiscated and he will have to pay the legal costs and compensation to Pezzi’s family. The sentence by Cordoba Provincial Court comes after an appeal presented by his family against a previous ruling that Pezzi had moved and had therefore contributed to his own death. However, the appeal sees only that the shot was fired in his direction and that the movement he made away from his chair was a necessary one. There were trees between the two men, and the shot also grazed the leg of another person.

Domestic violence not just a female issue By Linda Hall SPAIN’S gender abuse laws favour women although men are victims, too. In the past five years, 32 men were killed by partners, compared to 335 women.

This could account for the absence of investigations into male domestic abuse, experts believe. It also explains why so little help is available for male victims, they say.

But on many occasions, men do not seek it. Of approximately 130,000 formal reports of gender abuse received each year, only 2 per cent come from men and 15 per cent are later withdrawn.
