Flying the Spanish flag for the European Cup A MALAGA flag manufacturer has tripled production thanks to the European Cup. Instead of an average 100 flags a month, the factory is currently producing 2,000 a week.

Twelve machinists – eight more than usual – work in day and night shifts to complete wholesalers’ orders for Spanish flags, said manager Juan Antonio Moreno.

The factory has also outsourced sewing to a local cooperative, he explained, in order to meet demand.

The story is the same in the printing section, where machinery is functioning 20 hours a day and the workforce has increased from 12 to 20.

The factory also exports their country’s flags to France, Italy and Greece. Despite the crisis, the factory received an order for 4,000 Greek flags and is likely to export more.

Colmenar mayor carries on regardless THE mayor of Colmenar, Antonio Fernandez, refuses to resign although his party, the PP, is in the minority.

Fernandez has headed a minority council since last November, supported by just one other PP councillor. The ninestrong Opposition, composed of PSOE and IU councillors together with another from Convergencia Andaluza, is calling for Fernandez to leave his post.

They also accuse him of chairing last Friday’s council meeting and introducing proposals which had not been agreed beforehand and were later defeated.

He intends to continue as the head of the town hall, a defiant Fernandez told the Spanish news agency EFE. Together with the other PP councillor, he was determined to oversee the running of the town and protect residents’ interests, he

declared. He could not understand why the Opposition insisted on labelling him as irresponsible.

Fernandez claimed: “There are nine councillors and they can’t agree over forming an alternative administration.”

His day-to-day routine progresses ‘with normality’, he insisted, despite the precarious situation of the council he presides over.

T will be a real British versus Spanish tussle for top honours on Sunday when the flag goes down at the start of the European Formula One Grand Prix in Valencia.

1,600 train tickets sold in five days IN five days, railway company Renfe sold 1,600 tickets for the new high speed link between Malaga and Valencia.

The route is actually made up of two trains which connect in Cordoba, so the MalagaCordoba and CordobaValencia tickets can be combined.

The new service, which started Sunday, takes four hours and 12-minutes, including the change of trains in Cordoba.

The train also stops in Sevilla, Puertollano, Ciudad Real and Cuenca.

The service leaves Malaga at 5pm, arriving in Valencia at 9.15pm every day, except Saturdays, and leaves Valencia at 8.15am to arrive in Malaga at 12.17pm each day, except Sundays.

This is half the time it takes on the normal Alaris train. The price on the high speed train is €106.70 each way.

Malaga airport sees fewer passengers MALAGA airport saw a 5.5 per cent drop to 1.3 million passengers on low-cost airline passengers between January and June this year. This makes the airport fourth

Marine biologists prepare for invasion A DANGEROUS marine invader from the eastern Mediterranean is approaching Spain.

Known as the Foxface rabbitfish (siganus vulpinus) it is native to warm waters off Turkey and Greece.

Medium-sized with a bright yellow body and black-brown and white stripes on the head and front of its body, it is also popular as an aquarium fish. Should the Foxface reach Spanish shores, however, it could destroy the western Mediterranean, marine biologists warn. So far, only isolated examples have been detected.

Despite the distance, the problem has to be taken seriously, warned scientist Emma Cebrian, an investigator at the Blanes Advanced Study Centre.

Fighting invasive non-native species is expensive, she said. Even when adequate preventive measures exist, these are not always applied, “particularly with regard to the marine environment,” Cebrian lamented.

Non-native seaweed is currently the western Mediterranean’s principal threat, she said, while the eastern Mediterranean has to contend with the voracious Foxface.

“It’s not something we can afford to be relaxed about, because these fish could arrive when we least expect,” she said.

Foxface rabbitfish are capable of destroying marine vegetation and native seaweed is at greater risk than invader species like caulerpa racemosa.

If the former were to disappear, marine life would not find enough food to survive. There would be neither suitable places for them to spawn nor provide cover for young fish.

“These fish could demolish the entire ecosystem,” Cebrian prophesied.

QUIT: The smoking ban.

MORE than half of Spaniards would like to see the smoking ban applied to beaches or swimming pools.

A further 69 per cent told a TripAdvisor Espaùa survey that they felt Spain’s antismoking regulations had encouraged people to stop smoking.

The majority of the 670 people who participated in the study were not smokers, they told the TripAdvisor, leading researchers to conclude backing for the 2011 law has steadily increased.

When introduced in January 2011, 72 per cent of the Spanish public approved of extending the smoking ban to all restaurants, bars, pubs, clubs and discos, regardless of size.

Almost 18 months later, this has increased to 83 per cent, although 64 per cent considered that the law is not always complied with. A further 33 per cent believed that it is always respected.

Asked where they suspected the law was most frequently disregarded, 72 per cent were unable to give an opinion. The regions most frequently suggested by those who did provide an answer were Madrid (9.4 per cent) and Andalucia (8.5 per cent).

As well as the obvious health benefits, the stricter law also encourages tourists to visit Spain, said 12 per cent of those questioned.

Fifty per cent also said that they took into account a country’s smoking habits when deciding on a holiday destination.

Penis operation photos leaked A GRANADA hospital is investigating leaked photos of surgeons operating on a man whose penis was wedged in a metal cylinder.

The images were made public without his consent, said a statement from Virgen de las Nieves hospital, and ‘seriously violated his honour and right to privacy and confidentiality’.

Doctors contacted the

Granada fire brigade after they were called in to help the man after he trapped his penis in the cylinder.

They had to request specialist equipment to avoid having to amputate.

No pictures of the operation were taken or disclosed by medical staff, the hospital emphasised.

Economic experts are divided regarding their stance.

Some regard it as bluffing, others as boasting.

Spain is still in an ‘extreme’ financial situation, they say, which medium term could affect banks now considered in good health.

The spectre of future risk prompted ratings agency Fitch to downgrade 18 Spanish banks, including the four now saying they do not need cash assistance.

The findings of the external audit of Spain’s banks will play a vital part in deciding which banks need bailout funds, said university professor and financial analyst David Gonzalez.

“Right now, any analysis can be biased by what the banks themselves say and which might not be true,” he explained.

With branches in 10 countries and 100 million clients, Santander is the Eurozone’s biggest bank. It makes most of its money outside Spain, including Latin America.

This is why it has been less exposed to Spain’s economic and financial deterioration, with a net profit of €5,351 million in 2011.

Its assets, which include unpaid loans including mortgages, amount to €337,831 million. It has core capital funds guaranteeing the bank’s viability in a worsecase scenario - of 10.02 per cent, compared with 8 per cent required by the government.

It has a 3.89 per cent default rate on loans.

BBVA has assets of €597,688 million which as with all four banks include property loans and mortgages, but has fewer clients; approximately 45 million worldwide. It has fewer branches and is less focused on exterior expansion.

European health card is for urgent care only

I recently visited a Centro de Salut on the Costa Blanca and asked for an appointment to see a doctor under the old E-111 scheme, now replaced with the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for tourists in Spain.

I showed my EHIC, passport, gave the address where I was staying, UK address, and my UK driver’s licence.

But they told me that while it would have been possible to see a doctor with this card a few months ago, the rules have changed and now two documents are You and the needed.

With today’s cutbacks in all areas, including healthcare, Spanish officials are keeping a closer eye on expenses and this means that they examine foreign applicants for medical treatment with more care.

The EHIC is designed for European Union citizens to obtain emergency medical care in another EU country.

While it shows that the person is entitled to healthcare in their home country, the EHIC on its own does not entitle the holder to routine medical care in another country, only urgent treatment that cannot be delayed.

Indeed, you may need other documents.

A UK pensioner on holiday in Spain can obtain a ‘Proof of Pensioner’ certification which is valid for three months and this along with an EHIC will help the holder obtain services as well as medicines at reduced cost.

If ongoing treatment or an operation is needed in Spain, then tourists should apply for an S2 Form from their UK local healthcare trust.

Keep in mind also that practice varies from one region of Spain to another. Andalucia may have different regulations from Valencia, for example.

Perhaps the time is ripe for Spain to oppose EU THE rescue plan for Spain’s beleaguered banks was hammered out in the hope that the new money would encourage the provision of loans to businesses, allowing them to expand and take on more staff.

This would be a double blessing which would re-boot Spain’s faltering economy and reduce unemployment.

But haven’t we been here before, with the European Central Bank’s 2011 one-off programme of cheap loans to national banks so that they could ‘kick-start’ economies, and get trade moving again?

Unfortunately, on that occasion, bankers, in employing copy-book practices, used the money to invest in ‘safe-haven’ bonds instead of business loans.

Therefore, one can only hope this latest exercise in bank recapitalisation will receive better oversight.

But financial correspondents, having initially had time to study the few details available, were less than enthusiastic. Mariano Rajoy insisted that, as a banking recapitalisation exercise, the plan incurred none of the strict EU conditions imposed upon countries receiving full-blown bailouts, but there remains doubt about the source of the money.

Is it from the European Financial Stability Facility, or the European Stability Mechanism? The latter comes into force next month, with the question being: will investors wait? Then again, despite Rajoy’s protests, this loan will adversely affect Spain’s deficit, and with Finland demanding collateral before agreeing to anything, little wonder that the markets are nervous.

Rajoy must be tearing his hair out.

obscured anything beyond the chimerical Eldorado and politicians appeared to be equally myopic.

They additionally seemed incapable of realising where the uncontrolled spending and borrowing was leading, or perhaps they were just unwilling to apply the brakes, fearing that a construction industry slow-down might mean eventual electoral defeat.

With Spain employing the European Electoral System, coalition governments, with the concomitant ‘horse-trading’, are the norm. Small parties wield power out of all proportion to their actual voting strength, and finding themselves able to hold the government to ransom, make demands, often financial, to benefit their autonomous region.

Spending beyond the regions’ means was considered unimportant, with central government often having

no choice but to bail them out.

Rajoy, inheriting the banking sector problems, has been saddled now with the regional debts, all adding to the national deficit. The voters, who are worst affected by austerity and the ‘cuts’, have short memories, blaming those presently occupying Moncloa for their hardships, but with the media, including newspapers, radio stations and television channels now blindly supporting the EU and its collapsing single currency, what other point of view is possible?

There is a kind of censorship that air-brushes away any contrary opinion, leaving the Spanish people, ordinary men and women as well as those engaged in business, unable even to conceive of any alternative.

The euro must be saved they are told, and believe, but when pressed for arguments and facts supporting this view, they (and I include many friends) tend to frown, hum and hah, and swiftly change the subject.

Spain needs an active opposition to the EU, and perhaps the time is ripe for the inauguration of a Partido Indepentista de España.

Is the bailout the same as Portugal, Greece and Ireland’s?

The loan to Spain is not to bailout the government, but rather to recapitalise its banking system. Before the 2008 financial crisis, the government had relatively little debt and was running a budget surplus. Its problems do not stem from excessive state spending but from the banking sector which was left with huge amounts of ‘toxic’ loans when the property market crashed.

Banks need to raise even more money to recapitalise to meet international requirements and cannot afford to do so themselves.

The Eurogroup statement explained that the €100bn total would be to cover estimated requirements and provide an additional safety margin. The loan will be scaled to provide an “effective backstop covering for all possible capital requirements”.

The situation is fast moving, but here’s a summary of the key facts after the first few days.

Borrowing from the EU’s rescue funds means they can borrow at much lower rates.

Where will the money come from?

The money will be provided by the Eurozone’s bailout funds.

One concern for investors is that the Eurogroup statement was not clear on which one, simply saying ‘the EFSF/ESM’.

The European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) is the current temporary fund. It is due to be replaced in July by the new permanent European Stability Mechanism (ESM). Loans from the ESM are senior to other creditors and must be repaid first. Germany believes it would be ‘more efficient’ for the loans to be made by the ESM, while Madrid would probably prefer to use the EFSF. Either way, it is ultimately paid

by taxpayers across the Eurozone.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) cannot contribute funds to this particular bailout as its rules prevent it from participating in a rescue solely focused on the banking sector.

It will still play an advisory role.

Where will the money go?

The loan will be given to the Fund for Orderly Bank Restructuring, which acts as an agent for the Spanish government, which will then distribute capital to the financial institutions as needed. The Spanish government retains full responsibility.

Will there be supervision?

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy initially claimed the rescue deal was a victory for Spain and that it will not be subject to the same level of supervision as Portugal, Greece and Ireland. He said his decision to seek the funds was ‘the opening of a line of credit’ for the banks rather than a bailout with strict external supervision.

However, EU and German officials have since said that it will be monitored by the European Commission, European Central Bank and the IMF – the ‘troika’ – the same as the other bailouts.

The Eurogroup statement had also said that progress will be

closely and regularly reviewed, also in parallel with the financial assistance.

Is €100bn enough?

The €100bn offered is much more than expected. EU finance ministers wanted to take preemptive action and send a clear signal to the markets and public that they are ready to take ‘determined action’.

An IMF review into the Spanish banking sector, released just before the bailout request, looked at how Spanish banks would cope with an economic situation where gross domestic product fell by 4.1% and house prices by 20% this year. It calculated banks would need a €37bn injection – much less than the €100bn now on the table.

The Spanish government and regulators have so far underestimated the problems facing the sector and the amount of fresh capital needed. Only time will tell if €100bn is enough – investors do not seem entirely convinced.

Will this mean more austerity measures?

So far it does not look that way, as the conditions should apply to the banking sector and not the whole economy. With regards to Spain’s budget deficit reduction plan, the government claims the goals and premises

are realistic, and the tough measures already imposed will be decisive in returning to a strong growth path. It aims to consolidate public finances to the tune of €27bn this year. Income and savings taxes have been hiked as part of the measures, and a tax ‘amnesty’ is being introduced to collect unpaid tax.

If it does not meet the deficit target we cannot rule out further tax rises.

Does this mean bank savings in Spain are now safe?

They are safer than they were.

However, all this has reminded us that cash savings are not an entirely risk-free investment, and not only in Spain. Sabadell is smaller with 2.8 million clients. With assets of €105,321 million in 2011, it reported a net profit of €80 million for the first three months of this year, 5 per cent less than during the same period in 2011.

Its core capital is 11.8 per cent but the default rate on loans has increased to 6.02 per cent since taking over nationalised CAM. It is precisely because of this that experts believe the assertion that it will not require bailout money is ‘optimistic’.

Banco Popular meanwhile has assets of €172,902 million and, together with Bankinter, is less exposed to the effects of property speculation. It had net profits of €590 million last year, has core capital of 9.82 per cent and a 6.35 per cent loan default rate.

MORE British families are seeking expatriate life in Australia.

While Spain has become home for hundreds of thousands of Britons over the last three decades, Australia’s booming labour market and improving exchange rate is making it an ever more popular destination for UK workers seeking new opportunities.

With the ongoing Eurozone problems - including high unemployment - many British families seeking a new life are no longer focusing on elsewhere in Europe, including Spain, but looking further afield, including Australia.

Disabled Chris walks tall with second book A frequent visitor to Spain, multiple-sclerosis sufferer Chris Hales has achieved his ambition to write, with his second book now available in paperback and on Kindle. Nicole Hallett reports.

Why do you write?

I had to get the stories in my head out and I enjoy researching and the writing process. After first writing while at university, my first book was published in 2009.

What is your second book Templar: Call to Arms about?

The desruction of the Knights Templar.

The action-packed thriller took eight years to research and has already sold more than 1,250 copies on Kindle.

Influences?

Screen writer and novelist William Goldman, two university lecturers for providing insight into writing, and my Polish wife Aleks, my proofreader.

Looking forward?

Writing the Templar trilogy and having children.

Other jobs/activities?

Money collector for magistrates’ court.

Involved with the Masons.

Scariest experience?

Being told I had multiple sclerosis five years ago provided immense relief of finally having a diagnosis but also a fear for the future. I am now largely confined to a wheelchair and need a large monitor screen to write due to sight problems.

Favourite memory?

My wedding four years ago. Despite balance problems I managed to walk down the aisle.

Greece is allegedly ‘infuriated.’ But Greece merely waited for funds, assuming that everything would then continue as before, with trouble starting only when cuts arrived.

I WAS shopping in Iceland supermarket when I had my wallet stolen by a pickpocket.

I did not realise this until I got to the check-out and had no money or card.

As I explained what had happened to the supervisor, a very kind lady paid for my goods.

When I offered to take the money to her home she refused, saying it was a gift.

It has made me realise that there are angels around us as well as thieves.

Acrobatic alternative IT is ridiculous that €30,000 of council funds was voted by the majority of residents in Caceres village to be spent on bullfights rather than employment (Almeria, Issue 1405).

It is bad enough this barbaric pastime is still allowed, let alone choosing it over providing jobs for people.

The majority of the world is against the torturing and killing of bulls in the bullring.

I think instead of doing away with bullfights they should take the example of the ancient Minoans and turn it into an acrobatic show with the men in the ring having to somersault over the bulls who live to see another day.

This would take skill and courage and earn those in the ring respect rather than disgust.

Sad memories I FOUND the article about the treatment of hunting hounds very upsetting (Issue 1406).

The horrific picture brought back memories of when I first found my now much-loved Galgo (greyhound) roaming the campo in much the same state.

It saddens me how these hunters can be so cruel, though I am not tarring all hunters with the same brush as I know some dogs are treated fairly.

Galgos are so gentle and placid and great with children.

Like all dogs they need exercise though actually Galgos are quite lazy.

Loving retirement Spike the cat snuggles up to his new canine friends

Doggone thought on people ADANA staff members were amused on arrival at the kennels to find snuggled up together in the outside holding pen a cat with the pups.

They were even joined briefly by a pair of fearless mice.

Anyone of a thoughtful disposition seeing the harmonious way these animals were able to cohabit, albeit for a brief period, could perhaps be forgiven for drawing some unflattering comparisons with our own seeming inability to live peacefully with our fellow humans.

‘The more I see of people, the more I love my dog’ may not be as outrageous a slogan as some might think...

Courageous voice READING Harvey Mann’s letter (Issue 1405) regarding slovenly-dressed British tourists I feel so vindicated.

Everything he wrote I have thought but did not have the courage to voice.

I too get offended at the sight of displays of total disregard for what is suitable to wear on which bodies.

I am disgusted by some people’s lack of respect for their appearance and sometimes feel like telling them what to wear.

Surely the summer heat in Spain is not reason enough to be slovenly and not care about general appearance, caring merely about layers of false eyelashes and mascara just because they have seen a celebrity in a magazine use it.

Far from healthy I WAS horrified to read that 17 pharmacies in Alicante Province are not getting medications (Costa Blanca South, Issue 1406).

This is because the Valencia Government has not paid its €160 million debt to them, despite

receiving €110 million from the state to pay the pharmacies.

While I understand that there are debts to be paid, surely the money should be given to where it is supposed to be destined for?

No wonder there are so many protests going on with all the cuts to the healthcare system.

Instilling discipline C CRUMMINGS’ letter (Issue 1406) in which he complained about unruly children disturbing a theatre production brought up an interesting topic.

If children are well-mannered and have been taught how to behave in public then there is no problem.

However, with the lack of discipline in today’s world this is very difficult to do.

Not being allowed to smack their children means many parents are at a loss of how best to instil discipline.

Without discipline, some children grow up as menaces to society.

Perhaps parenting skills should be taught to mothers-to-be as part of pre-natal sessions.

Cashing in on € IN the article ‘No one big enough to reverse downward spiral’ (Issue 1403), Michael Pettis gave two reasons why Spain will leave the euro.

One was that Spain had a stronger fiscal position and healthier bank balance sheet than many of its peers when the crisis began.

I RESONATED with Mike Walsh in his article on life after retirement (Issue 1406).

After retiring from a highpowered career, many of my counterparts were surprised that I was not at a loss.

Instead I love my retirement.

I still get up early and now fill my days with what I want to do, whether it is reading a book, pottering around in the garden or meeting friends. However, while my wife enjoys going off on holidays to other countries I am perfectly content to stay in Spain and never travel far again, as this is what I had to do all my working life.

Alcohol concerns THE article about the two Brits who tried to swim to Benidorm Island and nearly drowned (Issue 1405) portrays the dangers of alcohol.

Not only does it take away reasoning power and provide a sense of false power, but also dangerously combines with youth. When I was 20 I visited the US and was appalled to discover the age of consent for drinking is 21.

However, I now realise that this is a good thing as the teenage brain cannot cope with alcohol and it has lifelong effects.

If anything the age of drinking should be raised to 25!

Here in Spain I see children younger than 15 out at clubs and pubs drinking.

Top of the pole THERE is a phrase that is often used to finish conversations that drives me mad.

It can be heard on TV and radio interviews.The phrase is ‘you know’.

Football players are perhaps top of the pole.

This has now become a little game I play to see how often this phrase is said in interviews. Top of the league I am keeping was 18 in a 20-minute radio interview.

I’ve found that one great way of levelling people is to imagine them sitting on the loo! Get the picture?

It always works for me.

One thing emerging from the Leveson Inquiry is that in the light of conflicting stories (under oath, I

may add) some are lying through their teeth.

To me the most believable has been John Major. How he must have relished the opportunity to get back at the man who virtually put him out of office.

Did it not show the unbelievable arrogance of Murdoch when, according to Major, this Aussie told him he didn’t agree with the Tories’ European policies and if they didn’t change, his companies would not be able to support them?

When Major treated his threats with the contempt they deserved, all hell was unleashed on him. From the sneering Kay Burley on Sky News, to the ‘grey man’ caricatures in The Sun and other Murdoch publications, he was pilloried for months in what I believe was one of the most relentless hatchet jobs unleashed on a politician.

Although there were certainly other factors involved in Major losing the next election, the real damage was done by this powermad media baron, who recently swore under oath that he had never asked any MP for anything in return for the backing of his media empire.

Blair told the inquiry much the same story. Give us a break!

Do these people think we are all still wet behind the ears? If the inquiry does prove them all to be economical with the truth, I’d like to see them all pay the price.

ONE thing truly enjoyable about the Leveson Inquiry saga is how it is managing to make a number of those previously ‘untouchables’ suddenly touchable.

All too often people in high places give the impression they are a different breed than us mere minions; this is why we are inclined to trust and put our, often blind, faith in them.

The truth, of course, is that they are no different to the rest of us.

Plenty are in fact a great deal worse.

I stopped putting these people on pedestals many moons ago.

During the ‘60s I often found myself rubbing shoulders with the ‘upper crusties’. The Christine Keeler/Astor scandals began on my Bayswater doorstep, so to speak.

Lord Boothby’s philandering was also fairly common knowledge in the area.

My association with Diana Dors resulted in my observing some VIPs in extremely compromising situations. I’ll never forget one wild-eyed MP staggering up to me in nothing but a string vest and

Taking a child overseas after a divorce

FOLLOWING separation or divorce of residents in Spain, there is significant potential for conflict when one of the parents wishes to take the child to live with them overseas; for example, back to the UK. This matter must be managed with great care in order to avoid committing a criminal act.

Less sleep, more food temptation ONE is more likely to opt for sweet treats after a poor night’s sleep.

The brain’s reward centre was more likely to light up in a study participant who was looking at unhealthy food if they were sleep deprived, a team from Columbia University in New York found.

“The same brain regions activated when

unhealthy foods were presented were not involved when we presented healthy foods,” said study leader Dr Marie-Pierre StOnge.

The unhealthy food response linked to when people did not get enough sleep.

Scans were taken after five nights in which a participant’s sleep was either restricted to four hours or allowed to continue up to nine hours, when the results were compared.

Previous research has shown that lack of sleep can lead to people eating more.

Money, money, money

OWNSIZE, upsize or simply plod along; life in Mallorca exposes the weight of our wallets like few other places in the world.

Unless you are one of those thrifty farmers on a self-sufficient plot in the deepest Mallorcan outback, money remains high on the agenda.

Yacht or not, life here is hideously expensive. A small apartment in Palma or the South West coast will set you back a king’s ransom; cars are about double what they would be in the UK, and don’t even get me started on the taxes; as you may recall, they are a taboo topic. As for provisions, even a humble tin of baked beans is practically prohibitive.

During my first few days here, I learned the answer to the poignant question: How do you become a millionaire in Mallorca? The answer, I am reliably told, is to arrive a billionaire. So Russian oligarchs can calmly stop reading now, but feel free to share and spread the joy.

For the rest of us, a few options remain. Allegedly, senior government roles on the island come with outstanding, albeit debatable, benefits. You probably have to be local, or at least Spanish, to plump for this one and be exceptionally good at subterfuge.

Hefty sales commissions have long been the bane of property owners’ lives here, but have, conversely, set up small empires for

the more cunning estate agents. At the last count, there were about as many houses as there are agencies on the island; at least it seems that way even with the economic slump. But with business as dry as the Gobi Desert, I suspect they need to sharpen

both nails and elbows to earn enough for a private jet, or island for that matter. As for the property owners, the crisis has seen off any real hope of hitting the big time with any capital gains.

So, what remains? Your bank account basically pays negative interest by the time charges and inflation are levied and the money may or may not be available come tomorrow, despite assurances that the Spanish banks are A-OK. Never has stuffing

your mattress with cash seemed such an attractive and safe investment.

I hear that there are still plenty of pyramid schemes doing the rounds, but you have to hope and pray that you are not the last woman or man standing and that the FSA, SEC and FBI do not catch up with you. Some of the proposals I have seen could have been more eloquently presented by my seven-year old child. The old motto of ‘if it seems too good to be true, it probably is’ remains valid.

My idea of setting myself up as a fullyfledged drugs baroness was met with some disapproval by my husband, so I guess I won’t be going down that lucrative road.

Just as well, since the market is probably well covered here and I have an aversion to severed horse heads in my bed.

So, alongside many of our Mallorquin friends, I shall instead be throwing three coins into the water this weekend at the beach in Palma Nova for the festival of San Juan in the hope of securing a financially blessed future from the gods-that-be. And return with my metal detector the following morning…

That is the great thing about this beautiful island; the summer sun is here and, with it, so many fiestas and events to seek out, all free, as is customary for the best things in life.

And should all else fail, I can always go for that thrifty farm or do a house-to-house search for a suitable Russian oligarch.

The Alcazaba: Almeria’s ancient fortress T

HE Alcazaba is an enormous fortress which dominates the city of Almería, standing as it does on a hill overlooking the town and the sea.

It was built in the 10th century but over the centuries it has had further enhancements added including a Moorish palace and, in the time of the Catholic Kings, a Christian palace.

Bougainvillaea, prickly pear, aloe vera, mimosa and jasmine tumble down the slopes near the entrance. There are also gardens within the grounds of the citadel both formal and informal. Poplar, willow, rose bushes and lavender are just some of the flora to be found within.

I enjoy walking around the grounds of the Alcazaba and exploring the towers and battlements - especially as I don’t have to pay to get in! Entrance to the fortress is free to EU nationals - just remember to take your passport. The leaflet provided at the entrance kiosk is headed ‘Monumental Site Alcazaba de Almeria’ - a pretty good description because the ‘Alcazaba’ really is both monumental in size and, I think, monumental in appearance.

It is hard to believe that its construction was started more than 100 years before William the Conqueror invaded Britain. The actual date that Abd al-Rahman - the first caliph of Al-Andalus - ordered its construction was 955.

There’s a lot to see in the various enclosures of the Alcazaba.

In the first enclosure there are pleasant gardens comprising some formal landscaping, manicured hedges of conifer enclosing a pond that is fed by an acequia.

A mimosa tree stands guard providing the pool with shade. There are trimmed hedges enclosing rose bushes that run parallel with the battlement walls.

From the walls there are impressive views of the old Moorish houses below and the port in the distance. At the end of the formal gardens, which include pine trees, and beds of lavender, there is a building called ‘Baluarte de Saliente’ which literally means ‘Projecting Bastion’.

From the battlements on the northern side of the garden, there are spectacular views of the ‘Muralla de Jayrán’; the walls built to enlarge the city’s defences in the 11th century. They run all the way to the ‘Cerro de San Cristobal’ - the hill of Saint Christopher.

enclosing rose bushes and pomegranate trees. Nearer the top of this area, the formal gardens give way to palm, prickly pear and mimosa.

On the ‘Wall of the Watchtower’ stands an impressive bell tower. The bell was used to warn people of attacking pirates.

The second enclosure originally housed the royal residence and contained all the most important buildings including houses, baths and the mosque. Most have been destroyed but there is still plenty to see.

Just inside the second enclosure, there is a beautiful enclosed garden containing a number of tropical plants. Manicured bushes and trees surround a pond, and a fountain is located at the far end.

I would recommend visitors to visit the towers of the Alcazaba. From ‘Torre Norte’ there are spectacular views of the walls of Jayran and, in my view, even more impressive panoramas can be seen from ‘Torre Sur’. Southeasterly the Cabo de Gata can be seen in the distance. Southwest is the ‘Castillo de San Telmo’, Almeria’s lighthouse standing proudly on a rocky outcrop. These towers are great vantage

points for viewing much of the city below.

Visitors might even notice a ferry pulling out of the harbour and wonder whether its passengers are bound for Morocco, Algeria or the Spanish enclave of Melilla.

On leaving the towers, visitors will encounter another little garden that mostly contains dwarf palms and cactus type plants with a tall eucalyptus tree hovering over them.

Most of the second enclosure is in ruins and, on my last visit, I had to walk to the third enclosure by way of a cordoned-off walkway.

This area between the garden of dwarf palms and the third sector is enormous, big enough to hold an army. It actually holds the foundations of palaces, houses, baths and probably much more. Several workers are employed there, some renovating and some, I believe, are archaeologists unearthing more treasures. One such important relic is the private baths of the ‘Hammam Palace’. I know this because a placard had been thoughtfully erected nearby.

In the third enclosure, at the very top of the hill, is an impressive parade ground. Parapets and towers surround a large paved area. One of the towers, ‘Torre de Homenaje’, has the coat of arms of the Catholic Monarchs above the doorway. It was Ferdinand and Isabella who ordered the construction of this, the castle part of the Alcazaba.

In the Torre de la Polvora - the tower of gunpowder - there are cannon. One of them was pointing seaward.

Construct a means of heating the water naturally to extend the number of weeks you can use the pool in spring and autumn. The following means are not difficult to install.

Use dark brown tiles with black designs versus blue.

These will absorb more heat from the sun. Have a high pile of rocks at one side of the pool with a gently sloping water-chute down which pool water can be recycled. The warm/hot rocks will warm the water.

Naturally dark-coloured rocks will work better than white rocks.

Install a hidden bank of black coated tubes through which pool water can be recycled. Banks of tubes can be hidden on top of a rockery, garage or pool house, on the sunny side of a pool house or garage.

Create an oasis effect by surrounding the pool terrace with concrete sandcoloured painted sand dunes with cordylines or palms planted through holes between the dunes.

With the long-term survival of palms along the costas questionable we would plant the cordylines.

Alternatively you could create a desert effect with tall cacti planted instead of palms or cordylines.

Enough of Dick’s way out ideas! Dream about them during summer sunbathing and perhaps make changes for next year.

US searches for all European properties are up 26 per cent last year, especially for listings in France, Italy and Switzerland where prices are generally holding steady.

Juke Nismo debut THE production version of Nissan Juke Nismo made its global debut at the Le Mans 24-hour race (France).

The model had previously been revealed

as a concept at the Tokyo and Geneva international motor shows.

This is the first glimpse of Nismo’s performance DNA which will make the awaited transition from racetrack to road in early 2013.

The Juke Nismo will be built at Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK in Sunderland, alongside other members of the Juke family, and sales in Europe are due to start in early January. Further details and specifications will be announced closer to launch.
