Velez cracks down on early rubbish disposal VELEZ-MALAGA Town Hall has issued more than 425 fines for breaking rubbish and sanitation laws in the town since the beginning of this year. The Councillor for Citizen Safety and the Local Police, the Conservative Partido Popular’s Antonio Arrieta, announced that more than 400 of the fines had
been issued for disposing of rubbish in municipial receptacles before the allotted time. In summer, rubbish should not be put out before 9pm, due to the heat. The rest of the fines have been issued to pet owners who have failed to pick up their dogs’ droppings from the pavement.

Depending on the type of offence and whether the person is a repeat offender or not, Arrieta explained, fines for such offences can range from €90 to €900. Meanwhile, the mayor of VelezMalaga himself, Francisco Delgado, could also be fined, but in this case, for alleged corruption. The Velez-Malaga electoral board has proposed a fine of €1,000 for Delgado whom they claim violated electoral laws by holding meetings with religious brotherhoods in the town after the elections had been arranged. During these meetings he informed them of the town hall’s decision to provide them with land for their headquarters. Delgado intends to appeal this decision and maintains that he has done nothing wrong.
