Summer sales off to a disappointing start FED UP WITH PAYING TOO MUCH FOR YOUR MOBILE?

By Daphne Hilarides THE summer sales in Axarquia have begun very slowly, without much improvement in purchases compared to the rest of the year. “This year’s sales are going very badly; all people do is look for the best deals,” according to Torre del Mar shop assistant, Sandra Jimenez. As usual, the economic crisis seems to be to blame for the unusually sluggish sales campaign. Despite prices decreasing by up to 70 per cent, and sales beginning on a Sunday, “customers just can’t spend as much any more,” Sandra said. A shop owner in Rincon de la Victoria complained that even with the discounts, people are not willing to pay what is on the price tags, saying: “I’ve had people trying to haggle over items that had already gone down 20 per cent.” Most small businesses are struggling to stay open, because even their usual clientele cannot continue spending as much as they used to. However, more expensive items including party wear and exclusive clothing are selling slightly better in certain establishments. Shop assistants attribute this modest increase to the early drop in prices during this year’s campaign.

‘Fire-starters’ sought following suspect blazes in Velez-Malaga A NUMBER people have been identified as possible suspects for starting fires in

scrubland areas in VelezMalaga. There are ‘several suspects, although their guilt cannot yet be determined’, according to Citizen Safety Councillor Antonio Arrieta, who adds: “The fact that they have all happened in the same area makes us suspect that the fires were intentional.” However, the culprits

have to be caught redhanded or more evidence has to emerge in order for the authorities to be able to bring charges. The councillor also pointed out that no one had been harmed nor any personal property damaged in the fires, noting that the fire department had dealt with them very effectively.
