Javea residents plan sit-in demo to reinstate beachside tables

‘We shall not be moved’ rally cry By Benny Davis FRUSTRATED Javea residents are planning a sit-in on June 18 to demand that the government allows tables and chairs on outside beachfront terraces. Last month, EWN reported that in accordance with Valencian coastal law, Javea Town Hall had ordered all restaurants and bars situated in the port and Arenal areas to remove furniture from their terraces. Bewildered tourists were forced to vacate their tables while Local Police supervised the operation, threatening forceful removal and fines if the edict was ignored. Gone is that ‘friendly Mediterranean ambience’, and local business owners are counting the cost of loss of takings and planning staff cut-backs. Official protests made at the time fell on deaf ears as local elections were only weeks away, with all forecasts predicting a complete change of town hall management. So says local resident Phil Harding who considers that Javea Council should agree a simple workable solution with front-line owners that would allow them to have an agreed number of tables and chairs depending on their frontage. Based on feedback, Harding received from a letter he wrote to a

local Javea publication, he feels the time is ripe for the public to demonstrate their right to having a say in their community management. In a letter sent to the EWN, he says: “In order to bring our concern to the attention of the town council, I would like to suggest that all of Javea’s Euro Weekly News readers hold a mass one-hour sit-in on Saturday, June 18, commencing at 11am outside Café Attico in the port.” He added: “It would be perfectly within the

public rights to sit on the sea wall, or to take their own chair.” Harding says: “It’s time to sit down for our taxpaying rights and emphasise the importance of Javea Council reinstating that historical friendly Mediterranean atmosphere that both residents and tourists have enjoyed for so many years.” He asks all that support this appeal, by making a positive effort with all the friends they can muster on June 18.
